Abstract
Urolithiasis derived renal colic is a common urological condition. If treated properly, the disease resolves without complications; if not treated, it causes infection and renal failure. The COVID-19 restrictions impacted hospitalised treatment of diseases. We analysed the impact of COVID-19 on renal colic treatment at a hospital in Poland. Clinical and demographic data of patients treated during the COVID-19 era were compared with those treated before this pandemic. During the COVID-19 restrictions, renal colic patient hospital admissions fell significantly. However, more patients presented with chronic renal colic symptoms and urinary tract infections. Nevertheless, the degree of hydronephrosis and the number and location of stones did not differ between the two groups. No marked changes were observed in the chosen treatment options. The observed decrease in emergency admissions of patients with acute renal colic with a simultaneous increase in the rate of infectious stones might indicate that some patients requiring urgent medical help did not report to the emergency department or came later than they would before the pandemic, reporting more serious symptoms. One plausible explanation for this may be that the reorganisation of the healthcare system restricted access to urological care. Moreover, some patients may have delayed their visit to the hospital due to the fear of contracting the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chronic anemia, iron overload, and iron chelation therapy are the main contributing factors for renal complications in thalassemia, e.g., nephrolithiasis, glomerular disease, and renal tubular dysfunction. The prevalence and associated factors for developing renal dysfunctions in Thai patients with thalassemia, however, remained limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of renal dysfunctions in patients with thalassemia. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on adult patients with thalassemia disease at Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University, Thailand. All patients were evaluated for complete blood count, blood chemistry, urinalysis, and urine biochemistry. Renal tubular dysfunction was defined as existing in at least one of the following parameters including; proteinuria, hypercalciuria, hypouricemia with uricosuria, or hypophosphatemia with phosphaturia. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify associated factors for renal dysfunctions. RESULTS Of 105 patients, renal tubular dysfunction was found in 60 patients (57.1%). In multivariate analysis of the clinical risk factors for renal tubular dysfunction in thalassemia patients, age per 10 year increase (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.4, 95% CI: 1.0-2.0, p value 0.01) and Hb E/beta-thalassemia (AOR = 3.6, 95% CI: 1.3-10.3, p value 0.01) were statistically proven to be associated with renal tubular dysfunction. Hyperuricosuria was a significantly associated factor for microhematuria. (AOR = 2.9, 95% CI: 1.1-8.0, p value 0.03). CONCLUSIONS Renal dysfunctions are prevalent in thalassemia patients, with older age and Hb E/beta-thalassemia genotype as significant risk factors for renal tubular dysfunction. Hyperuricosuria is a risk factor for microhematuria. Renal dysfunctions should be recognized and monitored in aging patients with Hb E/beta-thalassemia.

Abstract
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) plays a key role in the regulation of calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals-induced kidney stone formation and deposition. The purpose of this study is to study the effect of lncRNA LINC01197 on CaOx-induced kidney stone formation and the underlying mechanism. Crystal cell adhesion in HK-2 cells was evaluated by analyzing Ca2+ concentration. Apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. The RT-qPCR and western blot were used to detect the mRNA and protein expression. Patients with kidneys stones showed down-regulated LINC01197 and SIRT3 expression, and up-regulated miR-516b-5p expression. LINC01197 knockdown promoted CaOx-induced cell adherence and cell apoptosis, increased Bax, decreased Bcl-2 expression. Luciferase reporter assay showed that SIRT3 expression was promoted by LINC01197 competing binds to miR-516b-5p. In addition, LINC01197 expression was promoted by SIRT3/FOXO1 overexpression, and could be reversed by FOXO1 knockdown. In conclusion, the present study revealed that lncRNA LINC01197 inhibited CaOx-induced kidney stones formation by regulating the miR-516b-5p/SIRT3/FOXO1 signaling pathway.

Abstract
Introduction: In vitro metabolic fingerprinting encodes diverse diseases for clinical practice, while tedious sample pretreatment in bio-samples has largely hindered its universal application. Designed materials are highly demanded to construct diagnostic tools for high-throughput metabolic information extraction. Results: Herein, a ternary component chip composed of mesoporous silica substrate, plasmonic matrix, and perfluoroalkyl initiator is constructed for direct metabolic fingerprinting of biofluids by laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry. Method: The performance of the designed chip is optimized in terms of silica pore size, gold sputtering time, and initiator loading parameter. The optimized chip can be coupled with microarrays to realize fast, high-throughput (∼second/sample), and microscaled (∼1 μL) sample analysis in human urine without any enrichment or purification. On-chip urine fingerprints further allow for differentiation between kidney stone patients and healthy controls. Discussion: Given the fast, high throughput, and easy operation, our approach brings a new dimension to designing nano-material-based chips for high-performance metabolic analysis and large-scale diagnostic use.

Abstract
Background Few studies have examined the effect of ambient temperature on upper urolithiasis in developing countries, with even fewer considering individual factors. Methods The present study analyzed data on emergency department visits for upper urolithiasis from three hospital sites of a large hospital in Hefei, China, during 2016-2020. Data on environmental factors during the same period were also analyzed. A time series analysis employing a generalized Poisson regression model (GPRM) combined with a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was conducted to evaluate the effect of ambient temperature on the number of emergency department visits for upper urolithiasis. Results We found that ambient temperatures above 9 °C were positively associated with the frequency of upper urolithiasis visits, with the relationship being most significant on the current day and with a one-day lag. In the single-day lag effect, the most significant relative risk (RR) for mild heat (75th percentile) and high heat (95th percentile) was 1.229 (95% CI: 1.100-1.373) and 1.337 (95% CI: 1.134-1.577), respectively. The cumulative lag effect was significantly higher than the single-day lag effect, with maximum relative risks (RRs) of 1.779 (95% CI: 1.356-2.335) and 2.498 (95% CI: 1.688-3.697), respectively. The maximum lag time was 7 days. RRs were also higher among women and individuals aged 30-44 years. Conclusions Increased ambient temperature is a risk factor for upper urolithiasis, and there is a hysteresis effect. Women and individuals aged 30-44 years are the most susceptible.

Abstract
There are several disease kinds in global populations that may be related to human lifestyles, social, genetic, economic, and other factors related to the nature of the country they live in. Most of the recent studies have focused on investigating prevalent diseases that spread in the population in order to minimize mortality risks, choose the best method for treatment, and improve community healthcare. Kidney disease is one of the most widespread health problems in modern society. This study focuses on kidney stones, cysts, and tumors, the three most common types of renal illness, using a dataset of 12,446 CT urogram and whole abdomen images, aiming to move toward an AI-based kidney disease diagnosis system while contributing to the wider field of artificial intelligence research. In this study, a hybrid technique is used by utilizing both pre-train models for feature extraction and classification using machine learning algorithms for the task of kidney disease image diagnosis. The pre-trained model used in this study is the Densenet-201 model. As well as using Random Forest for classification, the Densenet-201-Random-Forest approach has outperformed many of the previous models used in other studies, having an accuracy rate of 99.719 percent.

Abstract
Mass spectrometry-based proteomics has been extensively applied to current biomedical research. From such large-scale identification of proteins, several computational tools have been developed for determining protein-protein interactions (PPI) network and functional significance of the identified proteins and their complex. Analyses of PPI network and functional enrichment have been widely applied to various fields of biomedical research. Herein, we summarize commonly used tools for PPI network analysis and functional enrichment in kidney stone research and discuss their applications to kidney stone disease (KSD). Such computational approach has been used mainly to investigate PPI networks and functional significance of the proteins derived from urine of patients with kidney stone (stone formers), stone matrix, Randall's plaque, renal papilla, renal tubular cells, mitochondria and immune cells. The data obtained from computational biotechnology leads to experimental validation and investigations that offer new knowledge on kidney stone formation processes. Moreover, the computational approach may also lead to defining new therapeutic targets and preventive strategies for better outcome in KSD management.

Abstract
Phytate (myo-inositol hexakisphosphate or InsP6) is the main phosphorus reservoir that is present in almost all wholegrains, legumes, and oilseeds. It is a major component of the Mediterranean and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diets. Phytate is recognized as a nutraceutical and is classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). Phytate has been shown to be effective in treating or preventing certain diseases. Phytate has been shown to inhibit calcium salt crystallization and, therefore, to reduce vascular calcifications, calcium renal calculi and soft tissue calcifications. Moreover, the adsorption of phytate to the crystal faces can inhibit hydroxyapatite dissolution and bone resorption, thereby playing a role in the treatment/prevention of bone mass loss. Phytate has a potent antioxidation and anti-inflammatory action. It is capable of inhibiting lipid peroxidation through iron chelation, reducing iron-related free radical generation. As this has the effect of mitigating neuronal damage and loss, phytate shows promise in the treatment/prevention of neurodegenerative disease. It is reported that phytate improves lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, increases adiponectin, decreases leptin and reduces protein glycation, which is linked with macrovascular and microvascular diabetes complications. In this review, we summarize the benefits of phytate intake as seen in in vitro, animal model, epidemiological and clinical trials, and we also identify questions to answer in the future.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pain and spasms of urinary and biliary tracts are conditions causing poor quality of life. Treatment with analgesic drugs such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and modulators of the parasympathetic system are not always tolerated, and often additional therapeutic options are necessary. The present analysis aimed to evaluate the pharmacokinetics and effectiveness of oral and parenteral preparations based on phloroglucinol in reducing pain and spasms associated with renal or biliary colic in phase 3, multicentre, open-label, randomized, comparative studies on clinical effectiveness and safety. METHODS Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies were carried out. Four phase 3 multicentre, open-label, randomized, comparative studies were conducted to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and safety in patients with pain and spasms of urinary or biliary tracts. Eligible patients randomly received either phloroglucinol orally or via intramuscular (IM)/intravenous (IV) administration and reference drug, dexketoprofen for urinary spasms and pain, the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug metamizole or scopolamine-based reference drug for biliary colic. The primary outcomes were symptoms and observed frequency of spasms, while the secondary outcome was the duration of improvement or the time between the drug administration and the recurrence of symptoms. Comparison of groups by quantitative characteristics was performed using the T-test for independent samples or the Mann-Whitney test. Intragroup comparisons were performed using the Wilcoxon test, or the T-test for linked samples. Qualitative signs were analysed using the Pearson's χ2 test and Fisher's exact test. RESULTS The pharmacokinetic studies showed that (i) most of the phloroglucinol (> 80% for IV and per os formulations) was eliminated in the first 6 h after dosing, (ii) the drug was eliminated in urine as unchanged phloroglucinol (1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene) in a small proportion (< 3% of the dose) and (iii) a considerable amount of the drug was detected after enzymatic deconjugation with β-glucoronidase/arylsulfatase from Helix pomatia. As for the pharmacokinetic study, a total of 364 patients were enrolled, divided in four studies: two designed to test the effectiveness of oral and IM/IV preparations in biliary colic and two in urinary colic. Baseline characteristics between groups were similar. Phloroglucinol oral or IV/IM showed an effectiveness comparable to the reference drug in reducing pain and spasms associated with both urinary and biliary colic. There was no difference between all groups by survival analysis. CONCLUSION Oral and parenteral preparations based on phloroglucinol are as effective in reducing pain and spasms associated with renal or biliary colic as current therapeutic options. Therefore, phloroglucinol may be considered as useful to treat pain and spasms associated with urinary and biliary colic.

Abstract
We sought to identify and quantitatively analyze calcium oxalate (CaOx) kidney stones on the order of micrometers, with a focus on the quantitative identification of calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) and dihydrate (COD). We performed Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and microfocus X-ray computed tomography measurements (microfocus X-ray CT) and compared their results. An extended analysis of the FTIR spectrum focusing on the 780 cm-1 peak made it possible to achieve a reliable analysis of the COM/COD ratio. We succeeded in the quantitative analysis of COM/COD in 50-μm2 areas by applying microscopic FTIR for thin sections of kidney stones, and by applying microfocus X-ray CT system for bulk samples. The analysis results based on the PXRD measurements with micro-sampling, the microscopic FTIR analysis of thin sections, and the microfocus X-ray CT system observation of a bulk kidney stone sample showed roughly consistent results, indicating that all three methods can be used complementarily. This quantitative analysis method evaluates the detailed CaOx composition on the preserved stone surface and provides information on the stone formation processes. This information clarifies where and which crystal phase nucleates, how the crystals grow, and how the transition from the metastable phase to the stable phase proceeds. The phase transition affects the growth rate and hardness of kidney stones and thus provides crucial clues to the kidney stone formation process.

Abstract
Calcium is the most abundant metabolite involved in the stone matrix. The CaSR gene controls calcium homeostasis, and genetic variation in the CaSR gene could lead to the development of renal stone disease. Therefore, the current study has been designed to assess the association of genetic variants of CaSR gene polymorphisms with renal stone disease. A single-centric prospective study has been carried out on a total of 300 participants (150 cases and 150 controls). Serum levels of calcium, creatinine, parathyroid hormone, and 24 h urine metabolites were measured. Two polymorphisms, rs1801725 and rs1042636, of the CaSR gene, have been genotyped for each participant. T test, binary logistic regression, and Chi-square analysis were used for statistical analysis. Renal stone patients had significantly higher levels of serum parathyroid hormone, creatinine, and 24-h urine metabolites in comparison to the controls. CaSR gene variants, rs1801725 (GG) and rs1042636 (AA), both have shown significant association with renal stone disease. In addition, individuals having specific genotypes along with metabolic abnormalities such as hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism are found to be at a higher significant risk of developing the renal stone disease. In the present study, the haplotype of the CaSR gene has shown an association with renal stone disease. Individuals with hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia and risk genotype have a higher susceptibility to developing renal stone disease.

Abstract
Pediatric nephrolithiasis (NL) or Kidney stone disease (KSD) is an untethered topic in Asian population. In Western countries, the annual incidence of paediatric NL is around 6-10%. Here, we present data from West Bengal, India, on lower age (LA, 0-20 years) NL and its prevalence for the first time. To discover the mutations associated with KSD, twenty-four (18 + 6) rare LA-NL patients were selected for Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) and Sanger sequencing, respectively. It was found that GRHPR c. 494G>A mutation (MZ826703) is predominant in our study cohort. This specific homozygous mutation is functionally studied for the first time directly from human peripheral mononuclear cell (PBMC) samples. Using expression study with biochemical activity and computational analysis we assumed that the mutation is pathogenic with loss of function. Moreover, three genes, AGXT, HOGA1 and GRHPR with Novel variants known to cause hyperoxaluria were found frequently in the study cohort. Our study analyses the genes and variations that cause LA-NL, as well as the molecular function of the GRHPR mutation, which may serve as a clinical marker in the population of West Bengal, Eastern India.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Kidney stone is the major cause of morbidity, and its prevalence is increasing in the world. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors of kidney stone in the adult population of southern Iran based on the data of the Kharameh Cohort Study. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on 10,663 individuals aged 40-70 years old, using the baseline data of Kharamah cohort study, which started in 2014. Among all participants, 2251 individuals had a history of kidney stone. The participants' demographic characteristics, behavioral habits, and the history of underlying diseases were investigated. The crude and Age Standardized Prevalence Rate of kidney stones was calculated. Also, logistic regression was used to identify the predictors of kidney stone. To check the goodness of fit index of the model, we used the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. All analyses were performed in STATA software. RESULTS The prevalence of kidney stone was estimated 21.11%. Also, the Age Standardized Prevalence Rate in men and women was calculated 24.3% and 18.7%, respectively. The mean age of the participants was 52.15 years. Higher prevalence of kidney stone was seen in women aged 40-50 years (40.47%, p = 0.0001) and moderate level of social economic status (31.47%, p = 0.03), men with overweight (44.69%, p < 0.0001) and those in a very high level of social economic status (35.75%, p = 0.001). The results of multiple logistic regression showed that the chance of having kidney stone was 1.17 times higher in diabetic individuals, 1.43 times higher in hypertensive individuals, 2.21 times higher in individuals with fatty liver, and 1.35 times higher in individuals with overweight. The level of socio economic status, male sex, and age were the other factors related to kidney stone. CONCLUSION In this study, underlying diseases such as fatty liver, diabetes, and hypertension as well as age, male sex, overweight, and high social economic status were identified as important risk factors for kidney stone. Therefore, identifying individuals at risk of kidney stone and providing the necessary training can greatly help to reduce this disease. However, health policymakers should prepare preventive strategies to reduce the occurrence of kidney stone.

Abstract
Stable calcium (Ca) isotope ratios are sensitive and radiation-free biomarkers in monitoring biological processes in human bodies. Recently, the Ca isotope ratios of bone, blood, and urine have been widely reported to study bone mineral balance. However, as a pure Ca crystallization product, there is no report on the Ca isotope ratios of kidney stones, even though the prevalence of kidney stones is currently on the rise. Here, we measured Ca isotope data of 21 kidney stone samples collected in Beijing, China. The δ44/42CaNIST 915a values ranged from 0.25‰ to 2.85‰ for calcium oxalate, and from 0.38‰ to 3.00‰ and 0.61‰ to 0.69‰ for carbonate apatite and uric acid, respectively. Kidney stones have heavier Ca isotope ratios than bone or blood, which is probably because complexed Ca contains more heavy Ca isotopes than free Ca2+. Ca isotope evidence suggests that magnesium (Mg) affects kidney stone formation, as the δ44/42CaNIST 915a value is inversely correlated with the Ca/Mg ratio. This study provides important preliminary reference values on the Ca isotopic composition of kidney stones and proposes a factor influencing Ca isotope fractionation in biological processes for future research.

Abstract
Kidney stone disease (KSD) is a common illness caused by deposition of solid minerals formed inside the kidney. The disease prevalence varies, based on sociodemographic, lifestyle, dietary, genetic, gender, age, environmental and climatic factors, but has been continuously increasing worldwide. KSD is a highly recurrent disease, and the recurrence rate is about 11% within two years after the stone removal. Recently, machine learning has been widely used for KSD detection, stone type prediction, determination of appropriate treatment modality and prediction of therapeutic outcome. This review provides a brief overview of KSD and discusses how machine learning can be applied to diagnostics, therapeutics and prognostics in clinical management of KSD for better therapeutic outcome.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to estimate the annual prevalence and incidence of urolithiasis stratified by work status based on a large nationwide sample. Methods This study used data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort from 2002 to 2015. The prevalence and incidence of urolithiasis were estimated based on work status and gender stratification. The risk of urolithiasis among workers was calculated using age-standardized incidence ratio with stratification of work type. Results The prevalence of urolithiasis was significantly higher in workers than in non-workers, especially men, during the follow-up period. The total estimated number of urolithiasis cases was 41,086 and the overall incidence of urolithiasis was 0.3%. The age-standardized incidence ratio of urolithiasis was significantly higher among the total workers (1.14; 95% confidence interval, 1.13-1.16), self-employed workers (1.08; 95% confidence interval, 1.06-1.11), and paid workers (1.19; 95% confidence interval, 1.17-1.21) than among the non-working population. Conclusions Workers, especially paid workers and men, were vulnerable to urolithiasis. Further studies are required to investigate the effects of working conditions on urolithiasis.

Abstract
Background and Aims Hypercalciuria is an important predisposing factor commonly found in humans and dogs with calcium oxalate (CaOx) urolithiasis. Calcium oxalate crystals can induce an inflammatory reaction that subsequently produces several proteins that have an inhibitory or stimulatory effect on stone formation. This study aimed to evaluate the differences in urinary proteomic profiles between hypercalciuric CaOx stone dogs and hypercalciuric stone-free dogs (CaOx stone and control groups, respectively). Materials and Methods Seven dogs with hypercalciuric CaOx urolithiasis and breed-, sex-, and aged-matched controls with hypercalciuria were included in the study. Serum and urine samples were obtained from all dogs to analyze electrolytes. Urinary proteomic profiles were analyzed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Student's t-test was used to compare the differences between groups. Results Forty-nine urinary proteins were identified in the stone-free and CaOx stone groups, whereas 19 and 6 proteins were unique in the CaOx stone and stone-free groups, respectively. The urinary thrombomodulin level was significantly higher in the CaOx stone group (relative ratio = 1.8, p < 0.01) than in the stone-free group. Conclusion This study demonstrated that urinary proteomic profiles may be used as a candidate biomarker for urinary tract injury in CaOx urolithiasis in dogs.

Abstract
PURPOSE Treatment of struvite kidney stones requires complete surgical stone removal combined with antibiotic therapy to eliminate urinary tract infections and preventive measures to reduce stone recurrence. The optimal duration of antibiotic therapy is unknown. We sought to determine if 2- or 12-weeks of antibiotics post percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) for infection stones resulted in better outcomes for stone recurrence and positive urine cultures. MATERIAL AND METHODS This multi-center, prospective randomized trial evaluated patients with the clinical diagnosis of infection stones. Patients were randomized to 2- or 12-weeks of postoperative oral antibiotics (nitrofurantoin or culture-specific antibiotic) and included if residual fragments were ≤4 mm on computed tomography imaging after PNL. Imaging and urine analyses were performed at 3-, 6-, and 12-months post-procedure. RESULTS Thirty-eight patients were enrolled and randomized to either 2-weeks (n = 20) or 12-weeks (n = 18) of antibiotic therapy post-PNL. Eleven patients were excluded due to residual fragments >4 mm, and 3 patients were lost to follow-up. The primary outcome was the stone-free rate (SFR) at 6 months post-PNL. At 3-, 6-, and 12-months follow-up, SFRs were 72.7% versus 80.0%, 70.0% versus 57.1%, 80.0% versus 57.1% (p = ns), between 2- and 12-week-groups, respectively. At 3-, 6-, and 12-months follow-up, positive urine cultures were 50.0% versus 37.5%, 50.0% versus 83.3%, and 37.5% versus 100% between 2- and 12-week groups, respectively (p = ns). CONCLUSIONS For patients with stone removal following PNL, neither 2-weeks nor 12-weeks of postoperative oral antibiotics is superior to prevent stones and recurrent positive urine cultures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High prevalence and reoccurrence rate of nephrolithiasis bring about serious socioeconomic and healthcare burden, necessitating the need of effective therapeutic agents. Previous study revealed that gallic acid (GAL) alters the nucleation pathway of calcium oxalate (CaOx). On the other hand, it appears protective role against oxidative injury. Whether GAL could protect against crystal-induced lesion in vivo, and its underlying mechanism is yet unsolved. PURPOSE This study aims to investigate the protective effects of GAL on the crystal-induced renal injury and its underlying mechanism in the mouse model of stone formation induced by glyoxylic acid. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS The mouse model of stone formation was established via successive intraperitoneal injection of glyoxylate. Proximal tubular epithelial cell line HK-2 treated with calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) was used as in vitro model. The protective role of GAL on nephrolithiasis was tested by determination of tubular injury, crystal deposition and adhesion, levels of inflammatory cytokines, macrophage infiltration and the redox status of kidney. In vitro, effect of GAL on the ROS level and oxidative tubular injury induced by COM were detected, as well as major antioxidant pathway Nrf2/HO-1. RESULTS Administration of GAL alleviates the renal deposition and adhesion of CaOx stone. Meanwhile, GAL ameliorates the inflammation and renal tubular injury. Level of intracellular ROS, osteopontin and CD44 are reduced, either in the mouse model of stone formation or in the COM-treated HK-2 cells after treatment of GAL. Mechanistically, GAL activates Nrf2/HO-1 pathway in HK-2 cells. Silencing Nrf2 abrogates the protective effect of GAL on the oxidative injury and adhesion of COM in HK-2 cells. CONCLUSION Taken together, our study demonstrates the protective effect of GAL on the deposition of kidney stone and consequent tubular injury. Induction of the antioxidant pathway Nrf2/HO-1 was found to decrease the level of ROS and oxidative injury, thus implying that GAL could be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of nephrolithiasis.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The association of kidney stone disease (KSD) and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery has been well established. With a rising obesity crisis, we wanted to see the correlation of urinary composition in patients undergoing bariatric surgery and their risk of KSD. The objective of this paper is to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of literature to evaluate the changes in urinary composition and risk of KSD following bariatric surgery. RECENT FINDINGS A total of seven studies (2498 patients) underwent bariatric surgery with a mean age of 46.7 years and a male:female ratio of 1:3. The most popular bariatric surgery was the Roux-en-Y procedure. Meta-analysis of the studies showed that significant decrease in urinary calcium, citrate, and urate, and increase in urinary oxalate. There was also a nonsignificant volume reduction in the post-operative cohort. The decrease in urinary citrate and increase in urinary oxalate are both predisposing factors of stone formation. There is strong evidence that bariatric surgery results in significant changes in urine composition in keeping with the increased risk of developing KSD. This identifies useful therapeutic targets in the prophylactic management of patients who have undergone bariatric surgery.

Abstract
Background and Aims Kidney stone disease is a crystal concretion formed usually within the kidneys. The worldwide prevalence of kidney stones could be affected by numerous differences in socioeconomic, and environmental factors. The purpose of this study is to investigate kidney stones among Iranian adults aged between 35 and 70 years and the prevalence and evaluation of socioeconomic inequalities. Methods In this, a cohort-based cross-sectional study was carried out among 20,427 participants of ArNCDs aged 35 and 70 years old. Kidney stone was defined as a dependent (and binary) variable while demographic and socioeconomic factors were considered independent variables. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify the key socioeconomic factors affecting kidney stone prevalence in Ardabil. Results The overall prevalence of kidney stones was 17.6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 16.1-19.2) out of which 21.53% and 14.36% pertained to men and women and 14.18% and 23.17% pertained to the poorest and richest groups, respectively. There was a significant difference in the prevalence of kidney stones between men and women in terms of age, marital status, education level, chronic disease, body mass index, and socioeconomic status (<0.001). The prevalence of kidney stones had a positive correlation with age (1.7, 95% [CI]: 1.42-2.04) and socioeconomic status (1.5, 95% [CI]: 1.34-1.69), where the odds of kidney stones increased significantly by increasing age and socioeconomic status. Moreover, the kidney stone concentration index showed a pro-rich distribution wherein it was more common among wealthy people (higher socioeconomic status) 0.062 (95% [CI]: 0.051-0.072). Conclusion The results of this study showed that there is significant inequality in the prevalence of kidney stones, where it was more common among the richest people. In addition, being men and old age are significantly related to kidney stones, so policymakers and physicians should consider these factors.

Abstract
Herbal products have been used in traditional systems of medicine and by ethnic healers for ages to treat various diseases. Currently, it is estimated that about 80% of people worldwide use herbal traditional medicines against various ailments, partly due to easy accessibility and low cost, and the lower side effects they pose. Bergenia ligulata, a herb ranging from the Himalayas to the foothills, including the north-eastern states of India, has traditionally been used as a remedy against various diseases, most prominently kidney stones. The medicinal properties of B. ligulata have been attributed to bergenin, its most potent bioactive component. Apart from bergenin, the other compounds available in B. ligulata are arbutin, gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, syringic acid, catechin, ferulic acid, afzelechin, paashaanolactone, caryophyllene, 1,8-cineole, β-eudesmol, stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, parasorbic acid, 3-methyl-2-buten-1-ol, phytol, terpinen-4-ol, tannic acid, isovalaric acid, avicularin, quercetin, reynoutrin, and sitoinoside I. This review summarizes various medicinal properties of the herb, along with providing deep insight into its bioactive molecules and their potential roles in the amelioration of human ailments. Additionally, the possible mechanism(s) of action of the herb's anti-urolithiatic, antioxidative, antipyretic, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties are discussed. This comprehensive documentation will help researchers to better understand the medicinal uses of the herb. Further studies on B. ligulata can lead to the discovery of new drug(s) and therapeutics for various ailments.

Abstract
Objectives We aimed to evaluate the relationship between the proportion of Android to Gynoid ratio and the incidence of kidney stones among US adults. Methods Participants aged 20-59 years from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database were selected to assess the association between Android to Gynoid ratio and kidney stone prevalence using logistic regression analysis, subgroup analysis and calculation of dose-response curves. Results This study ultimately included 10858 participants, of whom 859 self-reported a history of kidney stones. And after adjusting for all confounders, an increased Android to Gynoid ratio was associated with an increased prevalence of kidney stones (OR=2.75, 95% CI:1.62-4.88). And subgroup analysis showed an increased prevalence of kidney stones in women (OR=3.55, 95% CI: 1.54-8.22), non-diabetic (OR=2.59, 95% CI: 1.45-4.60), 60 > age ≥ 40 years (OR=3.51, 95% CI: 1.83-6.71), Mexican-American (OR=4.35, 95% CI: 1.40- 13.53) and white (OR=3.86, 95% CI: 1.82-8.18) groups, there was a significant positive association between A/G ratio and kidney stones. In contrast, in the hypertensive subgroup, the A/G ratio was associated with kidney stones in all groups. Conclusions Higher Android to Gynoid ratio is associated with a high prevalence of kidney stone disease.

Abstract
Ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy has evolved as the most commonly used technique for the treatment of kidney stones. Automated segmentation of kidney stones and the laser fiber is an essential initial step to performing any automated quantitative analysis, particularly stone-size estimation, that can be used by the surgeon to decide if the stone requires further fragmentation. However, factors such as turbid fluid inside the cavity, specularities, motion blur due to kidney movements and camera motion, bleeding, and stone debris impact the quality of vision within the kidney, leading to extended operative times. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt made towards multi-class segmentation in ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy data. We propose an end-to-end convolution neural network (CNN) based learning framework for the segmentation of stones and laser fiber. The proposed approach utilizes two sub-networks: (I) HybResUNet, a hybrid version of residual U-Net, that uses residual connections in the encoder path of the U-Net to improve semantic predictions, and (II) a DVFNet that generates deformation vector field (DVF) predictions by leveraging motion differences between the adjacent video frames which is then used to prune the prediction maps. We also present ablation studies that combine different dilated convolutions, recurrent and residual connections, atrous spatial pyramid pooling, and attention gate models. Further, we propose a compound loss function that significantly boosts the segmentation performance in our data. We have also provided an ablation study to determine the optimal data augmentation strategy for our dataset. Our qualitative and quantitative results illustrate that our proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods such as UNet and DeepLabv3+ showing a DSC improvement of 4.15% and 13.34%, respectively, in our in vivo test dataset. We further show that our proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art methods on an unseen out-of-sample clinical dataset with a DSC improvement of 9.61%, 11%, and 5.24% over UNet, HybResUNet, and DeepLabv3+, respectively in the case of the stone class and an improvement of 31.79%, 22.15%, and 10.42% over UNet, HybResUNet, and DeepLabv3+, respectively, in case of the laser class.

Abstract
Access to safe drinking water is critical to health and development issues, and residents' drinking behavior reflects their awareness of health and water hygiene. Random sampling and face-to-face questionnaires were used to investigate the drinking water behavior, sanitation and perceptions of drinking water among middle-aged and elderly residents in Tengchong, southwest Yunnan from July 1 to July 28, 2021. Differences between groups were assessed using the Chi-square test and t-test. Two binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore the influencing factors of drinking unboiled tap water and willingness to use filters. Results show that 35% of residents drink unboiled tap water, and 29.8% of respondents indicated a willingness to use filters. The model results showed a strong correlation between 60 and 79 years old (OR: 0.510, 95% CI: 0.303-0.858), 80 and above years old (OR: 0.118, 95% CI: 0.038-0.365), drinking water at a regular interval (OR: 0.397, 95% CI: 0.257-0.612), wanting to gain knowledge about drinking water (OR: 0.198, 95% CI: 0.099-0.395), Perceived health risks (PHR) (OR: 0.847, 95% CI: 0.771-0.929), having kidney stones (OR: 2.975, 95% CI: 1.708-5.253) and drinking unboiled tap water (p < 0.05). 60-79 years old (OR: 0.446, 95% CI: 0.244-0.815), 80 and above years old (OR: 0.228, 95% CI: 0.064-0.812), water storage (OR: 0.088, 95% CI: 0.026-0.300), middle school and above (OR: 2.238, 95% CI: 1.289-3.883), household water treatment (HWT) (OR: 33.704, 95% CI: 9.726-116.791), Perceived health risks (PHR) (OR:1.106, 95% CI: 1.009-1.213), water authority satisfaction (WAT) (OR:0.857, 95% CI: 0.769-0.956) and willingness to use filters were correlated (p < 0.05). Our findings suggested that a certain proportion of permanent middle-aged and elderly residents in rural areas still drink unboiled tap water, and residents are less willing to use filters. Residents' perception of drinking water can reflect residents' drinking water behavior and willingness to a certain extent. It is recommended that the government and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) should strengthen relevant measures such as knowledge popularization and health education, and regulate the water use behavior of middle-aged and elderly residents. Promote safe, economical and effective household water filtration facilities to ensure public health safety.

Abstract
Abstract
Background To develop risk scoring for the use of computed tomography (CT) imaging using the visual analog scale (VAS), physical examination, and laboratory findings of renal colic patients admitted to the emergency department (ED).
Materials and Methods This is prospective observational study. Among the patients who presented to the ED with abdominal or flank pain, patients who were scheduled for CT imaging for urolithiasis were included in the study. The mean VAS pain scores, physical examination findings, laboratory parameters, and macroscopic and microscopic values in urinalysis were compared between the two groups with and without stones on CT.
Results Of the 196 urolithiasis patients included in the study, 165 had ureteral stones, 76 had renal stones, and 45 had renal and ureteral stones. While the difference between the urine erythrocyte averages of the two groups was borderline significant (p = 0.04), there was a high difference between the urinary hemoglobin amounts (p < 0.001). In patients with urinary system stone disease, hydronephrosis, and ureteral dilatation, hemoglobin ++ and above were more significant (p < 0.001). For ureteral stones, pain intensity increased as the size increased (r = 0.34 p < 0.001). White blood cells > 10,000 103/mL, and C-reactive protein (CRP) ≤ 5 mg/L were more significant in patients with acute renal colic.
Conclusions Although we cannot develop a clinical scoring system for renal colic patients, the meaningful results we found for urinary stone disease can be used in a newly developed scoring system. It can be used in new scoring systems in the ED using a high VAS score, presence and amount of urine hemoglobin, CRP) ≤ 5 mg/L, and creatinine value.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate whether cystine crystal-induced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and activation of NLRP3 inflammasome contribute to cystine calculi formation. METHODS Slc7a9-knockout rats were created as cystine calculi animal models. Kidney histological examination using TEM and immunohistochemistry were performed. The protein expression of NLRP3 and IL-1β and the concentrations of oxidative stress markers such as ROS, MDA and H2O2 in kidney tissues were estimated. In parallel, HK-2 human renal proximal tubule cells were exposed to cystine crystals and NAC treatment. The protein and mRNA expression levels of NLRP3 were evaluated. Finally, cell apoptosis and cystine crystal adherence were also assessed. RESULTS Activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and marked elevations in MDA, H2O2 and ROS levels were observed both in vivo and in vitro. In particular, the protein and mRNA expression of NLRP3 was significantly increased by cystine crystals, but could be restored by an inhibitor of ROS. In addition, cell apoptosis and cystine crystal adherence were promoted by the NLRP3 inflammasome. The expression of CD44, OPN and HA in HK-2 cells was markedly increased by cystine crystals, but could be decreased by NLRP3 siRNA treatment. CONCLUSION Notably, we found that the activation of NLRP3 by cystine crystal-induced ROS production was of major importance in the pathogenesis of cystine calculi formation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) and Iodinated contrast media are widely utilized to increase medical imaging sensitivity. With predominant renal elimination, the potential for the incorporation of contrast agent derived gadolinium and iodine into kidney stones remains largely uncharacterized. The study objective was to measure gadolinium and iodine concentrations within kidney stones. Observed elemental concentrations were correlated with prior contrast agent administration, kidney stone composition, age, gender, and smoking status. METHODS Kidney stones from 96 patients were analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy to determine stone composition. Residual kidney stone material was digested and analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry to determine gadolinium and iodine concentrations. Univariable and multivariable lognormal linear regression were performed to study the relationship between kidney stone element concentrations and contrast agent administration, kidney stone composition, age, gender, and smoking status. RESULTS Median iodine and gadolinium stone concentrations were 6.4 (range 0.6-3997) and 0.1 (range ≤0.013-113.5) µg/g respectively. Elevated gadolinium was strongly associated with GBCA history with a hazard rate of 2.20 (95 % CI 1.14-3.25 P < 0.001). Gadolinium was positively associated with smoking, as well as stones comprised of apatite and calcium oxalate. Iodine concentrations were negatively associated with uric acid stones. CONCLUSION Gadolinium, but not iodine, concentrations in kidney stones was strongly correlated with contrast exposure history. Stone matrix composition and demographic factors, particularly smoking, can influence observed kidney stone elemental concentrations. Additional studies are needed to determine if exposure to gadolinium and iodine promote the formation of stone matrix and/or reflect exposure history.

Abstract
The renal stone found in the natural mummy of an anonymous nobleman dating to 19th century was investigated using advanced imaging modalities and analytic investigations. By this multidisciplinary approach we were able to identify the chemical components and their distribution throughout the sample. These results allowed to understand the lifestyle habits of the subject, as well as the exact pathogenesis of his disease.

Abstract
The introduction of single-use flexible ureteroscopes (suFURSs) in daily practice tends to overcome the main limitations of reusable ureteroscopes (reFURSs), in terms of high acquisition costs, maintenance, breakages and repairing costs, reprocessing and sterilization, as retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) is promoted as first-line treatment of renal stones in most cases. A hybrid strategy implies having both instruments in the armamentarium of endourology and choosing the best strategy for cost-efficiency and protecting expensive reusable instruments in selected high-risk for breakage cases such as large stones of the inferior calyx, a steep infundibulopelvic angle or narrow infundibulum, or abnormal anatomy as in horseshoe and ectopic kidney. In terms of safety and efficiency, data present suFURSs as a safe alternative considering operating time, stone-free, and complication rates. An important aspect is highlighted by several authors about reusable instrument disinfection as various pathogens are still detected after proper sterilization. This comprehensive narrative review aims to analyze available data comparing suFURSs and reFURSs, considering economic, technical, and operative aspects of the two types of instruments, as well as the strategy of adopting a hybrid approach to selecting the most appropriate flexible ureteroscope in each case.

Abstract
Human heat-shock protein 90 (HSP90) has four functional domains, including NH2-terminal (N), charged linker region (LR), middle (M) and COOH-terminal (C) domains. In kidney stone disease (or nephrolithiasis/urolithiasis), HSP90 serves as a receptor for calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM), which is the most common crystal to form kidney stones. Nevertheless, roles of HSP90 and its four domains in kidney stone formation remained unclear and under-investigated. We thus examined and compared their effects on COM crystals during physical (crystallization, growth and aggregation) and biological (crystal–cell adhesion and crystal invasion through extracellular matrix (ECM)) pathogenic processes of kidney stone formation. The analyses revealed that full-length (FL) HSP90 obviously increased COM crystal size and abundance during crystallization and markedly promoted crystal growth, aggregation, adhesion onto renal cells and ECM invasion. Comparing among four individual domains, N and C domains exhibited the strongest promoting effects, whereas LR domain had the weakest promoting effects on COM crystals. In summary, our findings indicate that FL-HSP90 and its four domains (N, LR, M and C) promote COM crystallization, crystal growth, aggregation, adhesion onto renal cells and invasion through the ECM, all of which are the important physical and biological pathogenic processes of kidney stone formation.

Abstract
Despite the progress made in the treatment of nephrolithiasis, the existing methods of renal calculi destruction are not ideal and have both advantages and disadvantages. Considering the process of high-frequency glow discharge formation on the surface of an electrode and in an electrolyte solution, we obtained the results on the destruction of renal calculi in vitro. It was shown that the destruction of kidney stones by glow discharge plasma was caused by several processes—the plasma induced effect of hydrated electrons and shock wave effect of the electrolyte stimulated by electrical breakdowns in the plasma. The plasma generation modes were configured by estimating the thickness of the vapor–gas layer in which the plasma burns. Thus, the average rate of contact destruction of renal calculi was measured depending on the plasma generator input power and time of plasma exposure. We conclude that the method of stone fragmentation by high-frequency electrolyte plasma is rather perspective and can be used in endoscopic urology for percutaneous and transurethral lithotripsy.

Abstract
Renal failure, a public health concern, and the scarcity of nephrologists around the globe have necessitated the development of an AI-based system to auto-diagnose kidney diseases. This research deals with the three major renal diseases categories: kidney stones, cysts, and tumors, and gathered and annotated a total of 12,446 CT whole abdomen and urogram images in order to construct an AI-based kidney diseases diagnostic system and contribute to the AI community's research scope e.g., modeling digital-twin of renal functions. The collected images were exposed to exploratory data analysis, which revealed that the images from all of the classes had the same type of mean color distribution. Furthermore, six machine learning models were built, three of which are based on the state-of-the-art variants of the Vision transformers EANet, CCT, and Swin transformers, while the other three are based on well-known deep learning models Resnet, VGG16, and Inception v3, which were adjusted in the last layers. While the VGG16 and CCT models performed admirably, the swin transformer outperformed all of them in terms of accuracy, with an accuracy of 99.30 percent. The F1 score and precision and recall comparison reveal that the Swin transformer outperforms all other models and that it is the quickest to train. The study also revealed the blackbox of the VGG16, Resnet50, and Inception models, demonstrating that VGG16 is superior than Resnet50 and Inceptionv3 in terms of monitoring the necessary anatomy abnormalities. We believe that the superior accuracy of our Swin transformer-based model and the VGG16-based model can both be useful in diagnosing kidney tumors, cysts, and stones.

Abstract
Background Urolithiasis is the formation of calculi in the urinary system. It is a public health concern worldwide that can lead to serious long-term consequences. Age, gender, dietary habits, and physical activity levels are all factors that increase the risk of urolithiasis formation. Furthermore, the presence of comorbid medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension are other major risk factors. Among the most prominent determinants that raise the likelihood of acquiring urolithiasis is exposure to high temperatures, especially in middle-aged men. Consequently, Saudi residents are two and a half times more prone than the global average to develop urolithiasis, especially those in the Kingdom's hottest regions. Methodology This cross-sectional study assessed the self-reported prevalence and non-nutritional risk factors of urolithiasis among the population of Hail, Saudi Arabia, through an electronic questionnaire. The questionnaire contained 16 questions divided into three categories. Participants' permission was obtained before completing the questionnaire. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) was used to analyze the data. Results Of the 1150 participants with a mean age of 26.3 ± 12.8 years old, nearly half were males (50.9%). Urolithiasis was detected among 158 (13.7%) participants. The following factors showed significant relation with having urolithiasis: increased age, male gender, a low level of education, diabetes, hypertension, and hyperthyroidism. A family history of renal stones was also associated with double the risk of having urolithiasis. Conclusion The results showed a high prevalence of urolithiasis in the Hail region, with many risk factors associated with it. It is important to support and promote awareness campaigns that address the critical risk factors of urolithiasis. Further studies should be conducted to arrive at a better understanding of the association between non-nutritional risk factors and developing urolithiasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recommendations on the optimal preservation of 24 h urine for the metabolic work-up in urolithiasis patients are very heterogeneous. In case two such tests with different storage condition recommendations are being analysed, multiple collections would be needed, challenging especially elderly and very young patients. We therefore aimed to evaluate the stability of urine constituents under different storage conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS We collected urine samples from ten healthy volunteers and prepared aliquots to be stored either at room temperature or 4 °C. Some aliquots were preserved using hydrochloric acid prior to storage, some thereafter, some using the BD Urine preservation tube and some were not preserved at all. Storage duration was 0, 24, 48 or 72 h. In all samples calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, creatinine, oxalate, citrate and uric acid were measured and compared to the according reference sample. RESULTS We could not find any significant deviation for any of the analytes and preanalytical treatment conditions compared to the associated reference sample. CONCLUSION Preservation of 24 h urine for the metabolic evaluation in stone formers might not be necessary for sample storage up to 72 h.

Abstract
Background: Managing complex and large renal stones with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is difficult because of the likelihood of residual stones and multiple access. Endoscopic combined intrarenal surgery (ECIRS) is introduced as an improvement to the procedure to manage stones in one session. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to compare the efficacy and safety between ECIRS and PCNL for treating large and complex renal stones. Materials and Methods: We conducted a systematic review in the Embase, Scopus, and MEDLINE databases based on the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guideline. Eligible studies comprised both randomized and nonrandomized studies comparing ECIRS and PCNL. Results: A total of five nonrandomized studies and one randomized controlled trial were included. The analysis was divided into two subgroups based on the PCNL type, a conventional PCNL (cPCNL) and a mini-PCNL (mPCNL). The one-step stone-free rate (SFR) of ECIRS were significantly higher compared with both the cPCNL (odds ratio [OR] 5.14, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.54 to 10.4, p < 0.001) and mPCNL (OR 4.27, 95% CI 2.57-7.1, p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in mean operative time and hemoglobin drop between both groups (p > 0.05). The use of auxiliary procedures was significantly higher in both PCNL groups compared with the ECIRS group (OR 0.19, 95% CI 0.13-0.30, p < 0.001). The overall complication rate of ECIRS was lower compared with PCNL (OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.21-0.85, p = 0.02), especially urosepsis, in which the incidence was lower compared with cPCNL (OR 0.14, 95% CI 0.02-0.78, p = 0.02), but not mPCNL (p > 0.05). Conclusion: ECIRS is an effective and safe treatment particularly for large and complex nephrolithiasis, with significantly higher one-step SFR, a lower necessity for auxiliary procedures, and a lower complication rate compared with PCNL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Several pre-operative parameters have been studied to estimate stone-free rate (SFR) following retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) procedures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of stone density on surgical outcomes of RIRS. METHODS This retrospective study included 30 stone-free patients (Group SF) and 30 patients with residual fragments (Group RF). Patients' age and gender, laterality, non-contrast CT findings, including size and density of the kidney stones, infundibular pelvic angle (IPA), operational time, and post-operative pain were recorded and compared between the two groups. The stone density was measured by free hand region of interest (ROI) determination coincident with the stone borders and expressed as Hounsfield units (HUs). RESULTS The rate of single stones was significantly higher in Group SF compared to Group RF (p < 0.001). The mean stone size was found as 11.93 ± 7.81 mm in Group SF and 16.27 ± 7.29 mm in Group RF with the difference being statistically significant (p < 0.001). The mean IPA was 53.87 degrees in Group SF and 50.33 degrees in Group RF. The mean density was measured as 748.17 ± 318.14 HU in Group SF and 945.90 ± 345.30 HU in Group RF. The mean stone density was statistically significantly higher in patients with residual fragments compared to the stone-free patients (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION This study revealed that stone density as measured as HU affects the treatment outcomes with RIRS procedure and the mean density is significantly higher in patients with residual stone fragments. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE Studies about the effects of HUs on stone-free rate are limited in the literature. Stone density affects the treatment outcomes with RIRS procedure and the mean density is significantly higher in patients with residual stone fragments.

Abstract
Kidney stone disease is the third most common urological ailment worldwide, people. The mechanism of stone formation includes: urine supersaturation, aggregation, retention, nucleation, and growth of crystals in the cells of the renal tubular epithelium. Kidney stones may cause extreme pain and blockage of urine flow. They are usually treated with conventional drugs and shock wave (ESWL) as well as a variety of medications that may cause several adverse effects. The remaining stone fragments and the risk of infection following ESWL are major challenges in the treatment of kidney stones. Recently, despite the emergence of modern drugs, medicinal plants have been recognized and utilized in many nations clinically due to their safety profile, efficiency, cultural acceptance, and fewer side effects than approved drugs. Medicinal plants are used in different cultures as a reliable source of natural remedies. The aim of this review is to provide comprehensive information about traditionally used plants as well as their scientifically proven pharmacological activities, their primary chemical ingredients, and potential mechanisms of action, such as analgesic, astringent, demulcent, diuretic activity, antioxidant activity, inhibition of the inflammatory process, nucleation inhibition, crystallization inhibition, inhibition of crystal aggregation, reducing , reducing stone size, and reducing urine supersaturation.

Abstract
Introduction Urolithiasis is a common disorder worldwide with an increasing prevalence and high recurrence rate. This makes preventive measures like dietary modification an essential part of patient care. This study focuses on gauging the perception of dietary habits favoring kidney stone formation. Materials and methods A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted at Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan. For nine food items and 14 beverages, respondents chose one of four options with regards to their relationship with stone formation, i.e. “increasing”, “decreasing”, “no effect”, and “do not know”. Responses were matched against evidence from the literature to generate correct and incorrect responses, thereby gauging perception for individual items. Results Seven hundred and three participants including 69 (9.6%) with a prior history of kidney stones, were recruited for the study. Participants with a personal history of kidney stone disease were older (odds ratio {OR}: 1.042 CI 1.020-1.064) with a significantly higher family history of stones (OR: 2.151 CI: 1.472-3.144). The majority were managed medically (87%) but never received dietary counseling (57%). Water, soft drinks, and tomatoes were the only three items out of 23 that were correctly identified by >50% of the participants with regards to their effect on stone formation. Responses did not differ significantly between those with stone disease and those without. Conclusion There is a lack of awareness among the general population, including individuals with a prior history of kidney stones regarding dietary prevention of kidney stone disease. This demonstrates a lack of existing dietary counseling thus necessitating the need for incorporating it at a mass level.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Eating habits, regular fluid intake, lifestyle and body composition are a primary point of research. The research focused on urolithiasis approaching potential danger, trying to interpret risk factors responsible for urolithiasis and disease recurrence. METHODS Research file contains 166 patients suffering from urolithiasis, 87 (52.4%) males and 79 (47.6%) females, and 172 healthy subjects from control group. All data was accessed using fully anonymous and confidential questionnaires, then evaluated in the statistical GNU PSPP 1.4 software. RESULTS More than 3/4 patients have a BMI higher than 24.9 and almost 40% of subjects have obesity class I, II, or III. Patients have higher BMI than subjects (d = 1.285; p < 0.001), and females have significantly higher BMI than males (d = 0.385; p = 0.007). Female patients have higher BMI than Slovak healthy females (p < 0.001; MD = 4.581; CI: 3.24-5.93). Patients have a lower daily water intake than subjects (φc = 0.157; p = 0.04) and more than 2/3 of patients have insufficient water intake. Sedentary employment prevails markedly in patients than in subjects. Patients are much less physically active than subjects (φc = 0.633; p < 0.001) and the difference is rising with increasing age of patients (ρ = - 0.232; p = 0.003). Low physical and working activity are characteristic for patients in this study. Patients smoke more often in comparison to subjects (φc = 0.261; p < 0.001). Patients consume more meats (red and white), cocoa and lentils. A lot of patients exceed recommended daily intake of pork and beef. CONCLUSIONS Many conditions are different for the healthy population and patients' group. High BMI, low fluid intake, exceeded red meat consumption, and low physical activity are the strongest factors for developing urolithiasis. Patients should consume more fluids daily, exercise frequently and vigorously, and lower amount of red meat consumed.
