Machine Learning-Based Detection of Dengue from Blood Smear Images Utilizing Platelet and Lymphocyte Characteristics

Dengue fever, also known as break-bone fever, can be life-threatening. Caused by DENV, an RNA virus from the Flaviviridae family, dengue is currently a globally important public health problem. The clinical methods available for dengue diagnosis require skilled supervision. They are manual, time-consuming, labor-intensive, and not affordable to common people. This paper describes a method that can support clinicians during dengue diagnosis. It is proposed to automate the peripheral blood smear (PBS) examination using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to aid dengue diagnosis. Nowadays, AI, especially Machine Learning (ML), is increasingly being explored for successful analyses in the biomedical field. Digital pathology coupled with AI holds great potential in developing healthcare services. The automation system developed incorporates a blob detection method to detect platelets and thrombocytopenia from the PBS images. The results achieved are clinically acceptable. Moreover, an ML-based technique is proposed to detect dengue from the images of PBS based on the lymphocyte nucleus. Ten features are extracted, including six morphological and four Gray Level Spatial Dependance Matrix (GLSDM) features, out of the lymphocyte nucleus of normal and dengue cases. Features are then subjected to various popular supervised classifiers built using a ten-fold cross-validation policy for automated dengue detection. Among all the classifiers, the best performance was achieved by Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Decision Tree (DT), each with an accuracy of 93.62%. Furthermore, 1000 deep features extracted using pre-trained MobileNetV2 and 177 textural features extracted using Local binary pattern (LBP) from the lymphocyte nucleus are subjected to feature selection. The ReliefF selected 100 most significant features are then fed to the classifiers. The best performance was attained using an SVM classifier with 95.74% accuracy. With the obtained results, it is evident that this proposed approach can efficiently contribute as an adjuvant tool for diagnosing dengue from the digital microscopic images of PBS.

Day-to-day regularity and diurnal switching of physical activity reduce depression-related behaviors: a time-series analysis of wearable device data

BACKGROUND

Wearable devices have been widely used in research to understand the relationship between habitual physical activity and mental health in the real world. However, little attention has been paid to the temporal variability in continuous physical activity patterns measured by these devices. Therefore, we analyzed time-series patterns of physical activity intensity measured by a wearable device and investigated the relationship between its model parameters and depression-related behaviors.

METHODS

Sixty-six individuals used the wearable device for one week and then answered a questionnaire on depression-related behaviors. A seasonal autoregressive integral moving average (SARIMA) model was fitted to the individual-level device data and the best individual model parameters were estimated via a grid search.

RESULTS

Out of 64 hyper-parameter combinations, 21 models were selected as optimal, and the models with a larger number of affiliations were found to have no seasonal autoregressive parameter. Conversely, about half of the optimal models indicated that physical activity on any given day fluctuated due to the previous day's activity. In addition, both irregular rhythms in day-to-day activity and low-level of diurnal variability could lead to avoidant behavior patterns.

CONCLUSION

Automatic and objective physical activity data from wearable devices showed that diurnal switching of physical activity, as well as day-to-day regularity rhythms, reduced depression-related behaviors. These time-series parameters may be useful for detecting behavioral issues that lie outside individuals' subjective awareness.

A measure of the difference between test sets for generating controlled random tests

Objectives . The problem of constructing the characteristics of the difference between test sequences is solved. Its relevance for generating controlled random tests and the complexity of finding measures of difference for symbolic tests are substantiated. The limitations of using the Hamming and Damerau – Levenshtein distances to obtain a measure of the difference between test sets are shown.Methods . Based on the characteristic of the interval used in the theory of the chain of successive events, a new measure of the difference between two symbolic test sets is determined. As a difference measure, the distance AD(Ti, Tk) between the test sets Ti and Tk is calculated using the interval characteristic, which is based on determining independent pairs of same (identical) symbols belonging to two sets and calculating the intervals between them.Results. The combinatorial nature of the calculation of the proposed difference measure for symbolic test sets of an arbitrary alphabet and dimension is shown. An example of calculating this measure for various types of test sets, including such as address test sets, is given. Possible modifications are shown and some properties and limitations are determined. The application of the measure of difference is considered for the case of repeated testing of storage devices based on address sequences pA with even p repetition of addresses. For the case p = 2, mathematical relations are given for calculating the intervals and distances AD(Ti, Tk) for address sequences 2A used for controlled random testing of storage devices. The main attention is paid to binary test sets, when the task of calculating given difference metric is reduced to the classical assignment problem using the Hungarian algorithm. The computational complexity of the Hungarian algorithm is estimated by the relation O(n4). As an alternative to the Hungarian algorithm, an algorithm for calculating the considered difference measure is proposed, the complexity of which is much less and has an estimate equal to O(n2). The experimental studies confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.Conclusion. The proposed difference measure extends the possibilities of generating test sequences when generating controlled random tests. It is shown that test sets, which are indistinguishable when Hamming distance is used as a measure of difference, have different values of AD(Ti, Tk) that allows to make more accurate classification of randomly generated sets as candidates for test sets.

Models and Methods of Designing Data-Centric Microservice Architectures of Digital Enterprises

The article is devoted to methods and models of designing systems for the digital transformation of industrial enterprises within the framework of the Industry 4.0 concept. The purpose of this work is to formalize a new notation for graphical modeling of the architecture of complex large-scale systems with data-centric microservice architectures and to present a variant of the reference model of such an architecture for creating an autonomously functioning industrial enterprise. The paper provides a list and justification for the use of functional components of a data-centric microservice architecture based on the analysis of modern approaches to building systems and the authors’ own results obtained during the implementation of a number of projects. The problems of using traditional graphical modeling notations to represent a data-centric microservice architecture are considered. Examples of designing a model of such an architecture for a mining enterprise are given.

A Hybrid Multitask Learning Framework with a Fire Hawk Optimizer for Arabic Fake News Detection

The exponential spread of news and posts related to the COVID-19 pandemic on social media platforms led to the emergence of the disinformation phenomenon. The phenomenon of spreading fake information and news creates significant concern for the public health and safety of the population. In this paper, we propose a disinformation detection framework based on multi-task learning (MTL) and meta-heuristic algorithms in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The developed framework uses an MTL and a pre-trained transformer-based model to learn and extract contextual feature representations from Arabic social media posts. The extracted contextual representations are fed to an alternative feature selection technique which depends on modified version of the Fire Hawk Optimizer. The proposed framework, which aims to improve the disinformation detection rate, was evaluated on several datasets of Arabic social media posts. The experimental results show that the proposed framework can achieve accuracy of 59%. It obtained, at best, precision, recall, and F-measure of 53%, 71%, and 53%, respectively, on all datasets; and it outperformed the other algorithms in all measures.

Cultivating Visualization Literacy for Children Through Curiosity and Play

Fostering data visualization literacy (DVL) as part of childhood education could lead to a more data literate society. However, most work in DVL for children relies on a more formal educational context (i.e., a teacher-led approach) that limits children's engagement with data to classroom-based environments and, consequently, children's ability to ask questions about and explore data on topics they find personally meaningful. We explore how a curiosity-driven, child-led approach can provide more agency to children when they are authoring data visualizations. This paper explores how informal learning with crafting physicalizations through play and curiosity may foster increased literacy and engagement with data. Employing a constructionist approach, we designed a do-it-yourself toolkit made out of everyday materials (e.g., paper, cardboard, mirrors) that enables children to create, customize, and personalize three different interactive visualizations (bar, line, pie). We used the toolkit as a design probe in a series of in-person workshops with 5 children (6 to 11-year-olds) and interviews with 5 educators. Our observations reveal that the toolkit helped children creatively engage and interact with visualizations. Children with prior knowledge of data visualization reported the toolkit serving as more of an authoring tool that they envision using in their daily lives, while children with little to no experience found the toolkit as an engaging introduction to data visualization. Our study demonstrates the potential of using the constructionist approach to cultivate children's DVL through curiosity and play.

LargeNetVis: Visual Exploration of Large Temporal Networks Based on Community Taxonomies

Temporal (or time-evolving) networks are commonly used to model complex systems and the evolution of their components throughout time. Although these networks can be analyzed by different means, visual analytics stands out as an effective way for a pre-analysis before doing quantitative/statistical analyses to identify patterns, anomalies, and other behaviors in the data, thus leading to new insights and better decision-making. However, the large number of nodes, edges, and/or timestamps in many real-world networks may lead to polluted layouts that make the analysis inefficient or even infeasible. In this paper, we propose LargeNetVis, a web-based visual analytics system designed to assist in analyzing small and large temporal networks. It successfully achieves this goal by leveraging three taxonomies focused on network communities to guide the visual exploration process. The system is composed of four interactive visual components: the first (Taxonomy Matrix) presents a summary of the network characteristics, the second (Global View) gives an overview of the network evolution, the third (a node-link diagram) enables community- and node-level structural analysis, and the fourth (a Temporal Activity Map - TAM) shows the community- and node-level activity under a temporal perspective. We demonstrate the usefulness and effectiveness of LargeNetVis through two usage scenarios and a user study with 14 participants.

Investigation on the effects of presentation modality for spatial signals on human performance using a dual task paradigm

A dual task was designed to involve a tracking mission with various tracking speeds and a spatial compatibility task with various signal-key mappings and presentation modalities. This dual task was used to investigate the effects of workload and resource competition in distinct parts of the dual-task process. The results demonstrated that increasing the tracking speed adversely affected the tracking performance but led to positive arousal to the secondary discrete response task. Visual spatial signals gave the shortest reaction time due to the optimal time-sharing of the visual resources in the focal and ambient channels. Compared with visual spatial signals, spatial signals of auditory and tactile modalities did not lead to an improved performance because of their cross-modality nature. These findings provided practical design guidelines for dual tasks in which the operators need to complete a continuous monitoring task visually and elicit timely and accurate responses to spatial information.

What Patients Say: Large-Scale Analyses of Replies to the Parkinson's Disease Patient Report of Problems (PD-PROP)

BACKGROUND

Free-text, verbatim replies in the words of people with Parkinson's disease (PD) have the potential to provide unvarnished information about their feelings and experiences. Challenges of processing such data on a large scale are a barrier to analyzing verbatim data collection in large cohorts.

OBJECTIVE

To develop a method for curating responses from the Parkinson's Disease Patient Report of Problems (PD-PROP), open-ended questions that asks people with PD to report their most bothersome problems and associated functional consequences.

METHODS

Human curation, natural language processing, and machine learning were used to develop an algorithm to convert verbatim responses to classified symptoms. Nine curators including clinicians, people with PD, and a non-clinician PD expert classified a sample of responses as reporting each symptom or not. Responses to the PD-PROP were collected within the Fox Insight cohort study.

RESULTS

Approximately 3,500 PD-PROP responses were curated by a human team. Subsequently, approximately 1,500 responses were used in the validation phase; median age of respondents was 67 years, 55% were men and median years since PD diagnosis was 3 years. 168,260 verbatim responses were classified by machine. Accuracy of machine classification was 95% on a held-out test set. 65 symptoms were grouped into 14 domains. The most frequently reported symptoms at first report were tremor (by 46% of respondents), gait and balance problems (>39%), and pain/discomfort (33%).

CONCLUSION

A human-in-the-loop method of curation provides both accuracy and efficiency, permitting a clinically useful analysis of large datasets of verbatim reports about the problems that bother PD patients.

COVID-19 Vaccines: Computational tools and Development

The 2019 coronavirus outbreak, also known as COVID-19, poses a serious threat to global health and has already had widespread, devastating effects around the world. Scientists have been working tirelessly to develop vaccines to stop the virus from spreading as much as possible, as its cure has not yet been found. As of December 2022, 651,918,402 cases and 6,656,601 deaths had been reported. Globally, over 13 billion doses of vaccine have been administered, representing 64.45% of the world's population that has received the vaccine. To expedite the vaccine development process, computational tools have been utilized. This paper aims to analyze some computational tools that aid vaccine development by presenting positive evidence for proving the efficacy of these vaccines to suppress the spread of the virus and for the use of computational tools in the development of vaccines for emerging diseases.

Intelligent lead-based bidirectional long short term memory for COVID-19 sentiment analysis

Social media is an online platform with millions of users and is utilized to spread news, information, world events, discuss ideas, etc. During the COVID-19 pandemic, information and ideas are shared by users both officially and by citizens. Here, the detection of useful content from social media is a challenging task. Hence, natural language processing (NLP) and deep learning are widely utilized for the analysis of the emotions of people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, this research introduces a deep learning mechanism for identifying the sentiment of the people by considering the online Twitter data regarding COVID-19. The intelligent lead-based BiLSTM is utilized to analyze people's sentiments. Here, the loss of the classifier while learning the data is eliminated through the incorporation of the intelligent lead optimization. Hence, the loss is reduced, and a more accurate analysis is obtained. The intelligent lead optimization is devised by considering the role of the informer in identifying the enemy base to safeguard the territory from attack along with the Monarch's knowledge. The performance of the intelligent lead-based BiLSTM for the sentiment analysis is assessed using the metrics like accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity and obtained the values of 96.11, 99.22, and 95.35%, respectively, which are 14.24, 10.45, and 26.57% enhanced performance compared to the baseline KNN technique.

Communicating Uncertainty in Digital Humanities Visualization Research

Due to their historical nature, humanistic data encompass multiple sources of uncertainty. While humanists are accustomed to handling such uncertainty with their established methods, they are cautious of visualizations that appear overly objective and fail to communicate this uncertainty. To design more trustworthy visualizations for humanistic research, therefore, a deeper understanding of its relation to uncertainty is needed. We systematically reviewed 126 publications from digital humanities literature that use visualization as part of their research process, and examined how uncertainty was handled and represented in their visualizations. Crossing these dimensions with the visualization type and use, we identified that uncertainty originated from multiple steps in the research process from the source artifacts to their datafication. We also noted how besides known uncertainty coping strategies, such as excluding data and evaluating its effects, humanists also embraced uncertainty as a separate dimension important to retain. By mapping how the visualizations encoded uncertainty, we identified four approaches that varied in terms of explicitness and customization. This work contributes with two empirical taxonomies of uncertainty and it's corresponding coping strategies, as well as with the foundation of a research agenda for uncertainty visualization in the digital humanities. Our findings further the synergy among humanists and visualization researchers, and ultimately contribute to the development of more trustworthy, uncertainty-aware visualizations.

An Integrated System of Multifaceted Machine Learning Models to Predict If and When Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries (Bedsores) Occur

Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injury (HAPI), known as bedsore or decubitus ulcer, is one of the most common health conditions in the United States. Machine learning has been used to predict HAPI. This is insufficient information for the clinical team because knowing who would develop HAPI in the future does not help differentiate the severity of those predicted cases. This research develops an integrated system of multifaceted machine learning models to predict if and when HAPI occurs. Phase 1 integrates Genetic Algorithm with Cost-Sensitive Support Vector Machine (GA-CS-SVM) to handle the high imbalance HAPI dataset to predict if patients will develop HAPI. Phase 2 adopts Grid Search with SVM (GS-SVM) to predict when HAPI will occur for at-risk patients. This helps to prioritize who is at the highest risk and when that risk will be highest. The performance of the developed models is compared with state-of-the-art models in the literature. GA-CS-SVM achieved the best Area Under the Curve (AUC) (75.79 ± 0.58) and G-mean (75.73 ± 0.59), while GS-SVM achieved the best AUC (75.06) and G-mean (75.06). The research outcomes will help prioritize at-risk patients, allocate targeted resources and aid with better medical staff planning to provide intervention to those patients.

Machine Learning Techniques, Applications, and Potential Future Opportunities in Pressure Injuries (Bedsores) Management: A Systematic Review

Pressure Injuries (PI) are one of the most common health conditions in the United States. Most acute or long-term care patients are at risk of developing PI. Machine Learning (ML) has been utilized to manage patients with PI, in which one systematic review describes how ML is used in PI management in 32 studies. This research, different from the previous systematic review, summarizes the previous contributions of ML in PI from January 2007 to July 2022, categorizes the studies according to medical specialties, analyzes gaps, and identifies opportunities for future research directions. PRISMA guidelines were adopted using the four most common databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Science Direct) and other resources, which result in 90 eligible studies. The reviewed articles are divided into three categories based on PI time of occurrence: before occurrence (48%); at time of occurrence (16%); and after occurrence (36%). Each category is further broken down into sub-fields based on medical specialties, which result in sixteen specialties. Each specialty is analyzed in terms of methods, inputs, and outputs. The most relevant and potentially useful applications and methods in PI management are outlined and discussed. This includes deep learning techniques and hybrid models, integration of existing risk assessment tools with ML that leads to a partnership between provider assessment and patients' Electronic Health Records (EHR).

Studying Early Decision Making with Progressive Bar Charts

We conduct a user study to quantify and compare user performance for a value comparison task using four bar chart designs, where the bars show the mean values of data loaded progressively and updated every second (progressive bar charts). Progressive visualization divides different stages of the visualization pipeline-data loading, processing, and visualization-into iterative animated steps to limit the latency when loading large amounts of data. An animated visualization appearing quickly, unfolding, and getting more accurate with time, enables users to make early decisions. However, intermediate mean estimates are computed only on partial data and may not have time to converge to the true means, potentially misleading users and resulting in incorrect decisions. To address this issue, we propose two new designs visualizing the history of values in progressive bar charts, in addition to the use of confidence intervals. We comparatively study four progressive bar chart designs: with/without confidence intervals, and using near-history representation with/without confidence intervals, on three realistic data distributions. We evaluate user performance based on the percentage of correct answers (accuracy), response time, and user confidence. Our results show that, overall, users can make early and accurate decisions with 92% accuracy using only 18% of the data, regardless of the design. We find that our proposed bar chart design with only near-history is comparable to bar charts with only confidence intervals in performance, and the qualitative feedback we received indicates a preference for designs with history.

Deep learning-based EEG emotion recognition: Current trends and future perspectives

Automatic electroencephalogram (EEG) emotion recognition is a challenging component of human-computer interaction (HCI). Inspired by the powerful feature learning ability of recently-emerged deep learning techniques, various advanced deep learning models have been employed increasingly to learn high-level feature representations for EEG emotion recognition. This paper aims to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive survey of EEG emotion recognition, especially for various deep learning techniques in this area. We provide the preliminaries and basic knowledge in the literature. We review EEG emotion recognition benchmark data sets briefly. We review deep learning techniques in details, including deep belief networks, convolutional neural networks, and recurrent neural networks. We describe the state-of-the-art applications of deep learning techniques for EEG emotion recognition in detail. We analyze the challenges and opportunities in this field and point out its future directions.

Real-time detection of freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease using multi-head convolutional neural networks and a single inertial sensor

BACKGROUND

Freezing of gait (FOG) is one of the most disabling symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), contributing to poor quality of life and increased risk of falls. Wearable sensors represent a valuable means for detecting FOG in the home environment. Moreover, real-time feedback has proven to help reduce the duration of FOG episodes. This work proposes a robust real-time FOG detection algorithm, which is easy to implement in stand-alone devices working in non-supervised conditions.

METHOD

Data from three different data sets were used in this study, with two employed as independent test sets. Acceleration recordings from 118 PD patients and 21 healthy elderly subjects were collected while they performed simulated daily living activities. A single inertial sensor was attached to the waist of each subject. More than 17 h of valid data and a total number of 1110 FOG episodes were analyzed in this study. The implemented algorithm consisted of a multi-head convolutional neural network, which exploited different spatial resolutions in the analysis of inertial data. The architecture and the model parameters were designed to provide optimal performance while reducing computational complexity and testing time.

RESULTS

The developed algorithm demonstrated good to excellent classification performance, with more than 50% (30%) of FOG episodes predicted on average 3.1 s (1.3 s) before the actual onset in the main (independent) data set. Around 50% of FOG was detected with an average delay of 0.8 s (1.1 s) in the main (independent) data set. Moreover, a specificity above 88% (93%) was obtained when testing the algorithm on the main (independent) test set, while 100% specificity was obtained on healthy elderly subjects.

CONCLUSION

The algorithm proved robust, with low computational complexity and processing time, thus paving the way to a real-time implementation in a stand-alone device that can be used in non-supervised environments.

The use of machine learning and artificial intelligence within pediatric critical care

The field of pediatric critical care has been hampered in the era of precision medicine by our inability to accurately define and subclassify disease phenotypes. This has been caused by heterogeneity across age groups that further challenges the ability to perform randomized controlled trials in pediatrics. One approach to overcome these inherent challenges include the use of machine learning algorithms that can assist in generating more meaningful interpretations from clinical data. This review summarizes machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques that are currently in use for clinical data modeling with relevance to pediatric critical care. Focus has been placed on the differences between techniques and the role of each in the clinical arena. The various forms of clinical decision support that utilize machine learning are also described. We review the applications and limitations of machine learning techniques to empower clinicians to make informed decisions at the bedside. IMPACT: Critical care units generate large amounts of under-utilized data that can be processed through artificial intelligence. This review summarizes the machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques currently being used to process clinical data. The review highlights the applications and limitations of these techniques within a clinical context to aid providers in making more informed decisions at the bedside.

Bloemen- van Gurp E, Dekker A, Fijten RRR. Development and external validation of multivariate prediction models for erectile dysfunction in men with localized prostate cancer

While the 10-year survival rate for localized prostate cancer patients is very good (>98%), side effects of treatment may limit quality of life significantly. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common burden associated with increasing age as well as prostate cancer treatment. Although many studies have investigated the factors affecting erectile dysfunction (ED) after prostate cancer treatment, only limited studies have investigated whether ED can be predicted before the start of treatment. The advent of machine learning (ML) based prediction tools in oncology offers a promising approach to improve the accuracy of prediction and quality of care. Predicting ED may help aid shared decision-making by making the advantages and disadvantages of certain treatments clear, so that a tailored treatment for an individual patient can be chosen. This study aimed to predict ED at 1-year and 2-year post-diagnosis based on patient demographics, clinical data and patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) measured at diagnosis. We used a subset of the ProZIB dataset collected by the Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Organization (Integraal Kankercentrum Nederland; IKNL) that contained information on 964 localized prostate cancer cases from 69 Dutch hospitals for model training and external validation. Two models were generated using a logistic regression algorithm coupled with Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE). The first predicted ED 1 year post-diagnosis and required 10 pre-treatment variables; the second predicted ED 2 years post-diagnosis with 9 pre-treatment variables. The validation AUCs were 0.84 and 0.81 for 1 year and 2 years post-diagnosis respectively. To immediately allow patients and clinicians to use these models in the clinical decision-making process, nomograms were generated. In conclusion, we successfully developed and validated two models that predicted ED in patients with localized prostate cancer. These models will allow physicians and patients alike to make informed evidence-based decisions about the most suitable treatment with quality of life in mind.

Staying connected in old age: associations between bonding social capital, loneliness and well-being and the value of digital media

OBJECTIVES

We examined associations between age, bonding social capital (BSC), loneliness and psychological, social and emotional well-being in old age. As in theory digital media can support both preservation of and access to someone's social capital, we also explored associations between the use of WhatsApp, social network sites (SNS) and Internet applications and respectively BSC and loneliness.

METHOD

In this cross-sectional study a sample of 349 older adults (range = 70y-93y; Mean(SD)=74.8y(4.9y); 59.6% male) filled out a questionnaire including the bonding social capital subscale of the personal social capital scale for elderly (PSCSE), validated scales measuring social, emotional, and psychological well-being and loneliness, the SNS intensity scale and items measuring frequencies of Whatsapp use and use of various Internet functions. Also relevant demographic and other covariates were included.

RESULTS

Regression analyses including relevant covariates confirmed our hypotheses, finding negative associations between BSC and both age and loneliness, and positive associations between BSC and psychological, social and emotional well-being. WhatsApp and Internet use were both found positively associated with BSC, whilst a negative association between WhatsApp use and loneliness was found. SNS use was not associated with BSC nor with loneliness.

CONCLUSION

Our findings indicate BSC as an important factor in positive aging and illustrate a widening gap between the need for socio-emotional resources versus their availability. With regard to digital media, we conclude that its value in old age should be sought in providing access to one's bonding social capital rather than adding to it by expanding the number of social relations.

A learning-based image processing approach for pulse wave velocity estimation using spectrogram from peripheral pulse wave signals: An in silico study

Carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) is considered a critical index to evaluate arterial stiffness. For this reason, estimating Carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) is essential for diagnosing and analyzing different cardiovascular diseases. Despite its broader adoption in the clinical routine, the measurement process of carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity is considered a demanding task for clinicians and patients making it prone to inaccuracies and errors in the estimation. A smart non-invasive, and peripheral measurement of carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity could overcome the challenges of the classical assessment process and improve the quality of patient care. This paper proposes a novel methodology for the carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity estimation based on the use of the spectrogram representation from single non-invasive peripheral pulse wave signals [photoplethysmography (PPG) or blood pressure (BP)]. This methodology was tested using three feature extraction methods based on the semi-classical signal analysis (SCSA) method, the Law's mask for texture energy extraction, and the central statistical moments. Finally, each feature method was fed into different machine learning models for the carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity estimation. The proposed methodology obtained an $R²\geq0.90$ for all the peripheral signals for the noise-free case using the MLP model, and for the different noise levels added to the original signal, the SCSA-based features with the MLP model presented an $R²\geq0.91$ for all the peripheral signals at the level of noise. These results provide evidence of the capacity of spectrogram representation for efficiently assessing the carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity estimation using different feature methods. Future work will be done toward testing the proposed methodology for in-vivo signals.

The Flash Loan Attack Analysis (FAA) Framework—A Case Study of the Warp Finance Exploitation

Decentralized finance (DeFi) has exploded in popularity with a billion-dollar market cap. While uncollateralized lending, known as a flash loan, emerged from DeFi, it has become a primary tool used by attackers to drain investment tokens from DeFi networks. The existing countermeasures seem practical, but no comprehensive quantitative analysis framework was available to test them. This paper proposes the Flash loan Attack Analysis (FAA) framework, which aids security practitioners in understanding the DeFi system’s effects on preventative methods when various factors change. The quantitative predictions can help security professionals in identifying hidden dangers and more efficiently adopting countermeasure strategies. The simulation predicts that the existing strategy, fair reserves, can fully protect the platform in a typical market environment; however, in a highly volatile market where the token price drops by 60% in a single hour, it will be broken, causing more than $8 million in damage.

Designing and implementing smart glass technology for emergency medical services: a sociotechnical perspective

Objective

This study aims to investigate key considerations and critical factors that influence the implementation and adoption of smart glasses in fast-paced medical settings such as emergency medical services (EMS).

Materials and Methods

We employed a sociotechnical theoretical framework and conducted a set of participatory design workshops with 15 EMS providers to elicit their opinions and concerns about using smart glasses in real practice.

Results

Smart glasses were recognized as a useful tool to improve EMS workflow given their hands-free nature and capability of processing and capturing various patient data. Out of the 8 dimensions of the sociotechnical model, we found that hardware and software, human-computer interface, workflow, and external rules and regulations were cited as the major factors that could influence the adoption of this novel technology. EMS participants highlighted several key requirements for the successful implementation of smart glasses in the EMS context, such as durable devices, easy-to-use and minimal interface design, seamless integration with existing systems and workflow, and secure data management.

Discussion

Applications of the sociotechnical model allowed us to identify a range of factors, including not only technical aspects, but also social, organizational, and human factors, that impact the implementation and uptake of smart glasses in EMS. Our work informs design implications for smart glass applications to fulfill EMS providers' needs.

Conclusion

The successful implementation of smart glasses in EMS and other dynamic healthcare settings needs careful consideration of sociotechnical issues and close collaboration between different stakeholders.

Wireless Link Selection Methods for Maritime Communication Access Networks-A Deep Learning Approach

In recent years, we have been witnessing a growing interest in the subject of communication at sea. One of the promising solutions to enable widespread access to data transmission capabilities in coastal waters is the possibility of employing an on-shore wireless access infrastructure. However, such an infrastructure is a heterogeneous one, managed by many independent operators and utilizing a number of different communication technologies. If a moving sea vessel is to maintain a reliable communication within such a system, it needs to employ a set of network mechanisms dedicated for this purpose. In this paper, we provide a short overview of such requirements and overall characteristics of maritime communication, but our main focus is on the link selection procedure-an element of critical importance for the process of changing the device/system which the mobile vessel uses to retain communication with on-shore networks. The paper presents the concept of employing deep neural networks for the purpose of link selection. The proposed methods have been verified using propagation models dedicated to realistically represent the environment of maritime communications and compared to a number of currently popular solutions. The results of evaluation indicate a significant gain in both accuracy of predictions and reduction of the amount of test traffic which needs to be generated for measurements.

IMAGE-IN: Interactive web-based multidimensional 3D visualizer for multi-modal microscopy images

Advances in microscopy hardware and storage capabilities lead to increasingly larger multidimensional datasets. The multiple dimensions are commonly associated with space, time, and color channels. Since "seeing is believing", it is important to have easy access to user-friendly visualization software. Here we present IMAGE-IN, an interactive web-based multidimensional (N-D) viewer designed specifically for confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) data, with the goal of assisting biologists in their visualization and analysis tasks and promoting digital workflows. This new visualization platform includes intuitive multidimensional opacity fine-tuning, shading on/off, multiple blending modes for volume viewers, and the ability to handle multichannel volumetric data in volume and surface views. The software accepts a sequence of image files or stacked 3D images as input and offers a variety of viewing options ranging from 3D volume/surface rendering to multiplanar reconstruction approaches. We evaluate the performance by comparing the loading and rendering timings of a heterogeneous dataset of multichannel CLSM and FIB-SEM images on two devices with installed graphic cards, as well as comparing rendered image quality between ClearVolume (the ImageJ open-source desktop viewer), Napari (the Python desktop viewer), Imaris (the closed-source desktop viewer), and our proposed IMAGE-IN web viewer.

An Optimal Approach for Heart Sound Classification Using Grid Search in Hyperparameter Optimization of Machine Learning

Heart-sound auscultation is one of the most widely used approaches for detecting cardiovascular disorders. Diagnosing abnormalities of heart sound using a stethoscope depends on the physician's skill and judgment. Several studies have shown promising results in automatically detecting cardiovascular disorders based on heart-sound signals. However, the accuracy performance needs to be enhanced as automated heart-sound classification aids in the early detection and prevention of the dangerous effects of cardiovascular problems. In this study, an optimal heart-sound classification method based on machine learning technologies for cardiovascular disease prediction is performed. It consists of three steps: pre-processing that sets the 5 s duration of the PhysioNet Challenge 2016 and 2022 datasets, feature extraction using Mel frequency cepstrum coefficients (MFCC), and classification using grid search for hyperparameter tuning of several classifier algorithms including k-nearest neighbor (K-NN), random forest (RF), artificial neural network (ANN), and support vector machine (SVM). The five-fold cross-validation was used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The best model obtained classification accuracy of 95.78% and 76.31%, which was assessed using PhysioNet Challenge 2016 and 2022, respectively. The findings demonstrate that the suggested approach obtained excellent classification results using PhysioNet Challenge 2016 and showed promising results using PhysioNet Challenge 2022. Therefore, the proposed method has been potentially developed as an additional tool to facilitate the medical practitioner in diagnosing the abnormality of the heart sound.

Evaluation of the Use of Digital Mental Health Platforms and Interventions: Scoping Review

BACKGROUND

The increasing use of digital mental health (DMH) platforms and digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) is hindered by uncertainty over effectiveness, quality and usability. There is a need to identify the types of available evidence in this domain.

AIM

This study is a scoping review identifying evaluation of the (1) DMH platform/s used; and (2) DMHI/s applied on the DMH platform/s.

METHODS

The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guided the review process. Empirical studies that focused on evaluation of the use and application of DMH platforms were included from journal articles (published 2012-2022). A literature search was conducted using four electronic databases (Scopus, ScienceDirect, Sage and ACM Digital Library) and two search engines (PubMed and Google Scholar).

RESULTS

A total of 6874 nonduplicate records were identified, of which 144 were analyzed and 22 met the inclusion criteria. The review included general/unspecified mental health and/or suicidality indications (n = 9, 40.9%), followed by depression (n = 5, 22.7%), psychosis (n = 3, 13.6%), anxiety and depression (n = 2, 9.1%), as well as anxiety, depression and suicidality (n = 1, 4.5%), loneliness (n = 1, 4.5%), and addiction (n = 1, 4.5%). There were 11 qualitative studies (50%), 8 quantitative studies (36.4%), and 3 mixed-methods studies (n = 3, 13.6%). The results contained 11 studies that evaluated the DMH platform/s and 11 studies that evaluated the DMHI/s. The studies focused on feasibility, usability, engagement, acceptability and effectiveness. There was a small amount of significant evidence (1 in each 11), notably the (cost-)effectiveness of a DMHI with significant long-term impact on anxiety and depression in adults.

CONCLUSION

The empirical research demonstrates the feasibility of DMH platforms and DMHIs. To date, there is mostly heterogeneous, preliminary evidence for their effectiveness, quality and usability. However, a scalable DMHI reported effectiveness in treating adults' anxiety and depression. The scope of effectiveness may be widened through targeted strategies, for example by engaging independent young people.

An evaluation of registered nurses' experiences of person-centered care and competence after participating in a course in digital competence in care

BACKGROUND

Health care's rapid transition from in-person visits to more digital care meetings has challenged nurses to find new, sustainable ways of using digital technology.

METHODS

The aim was to describe registered nurses'(RN) experiences with person-centred care (PCC) and competence after participating in a course in Digital Competence in Care (DCC). In this study, a qualitative descriptive design was used, and 16 individual interviews were carried out with RNs. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The COREQ checklist was used in this study.

RESULTS

The results were presented in four categories: being open to change and new ways of working with patients; struggling to handle requirements; developing new ways of working and focusing on patients despite the distance.

CONCLUSIONS

The DCC course helped develop RNs' skills and practice of PCC in digital care meetings. Training in digital care theory increased RNs' competence and facilitated the creation of new knowledge. The RNs' professional role was strengthened by participating in the changing of work routines. Digital care meetings were shown to be distance bridging and complementary to physical care meetings contributing to PCC. The increased availability of health care via digital means has affected the consumption of care and tailored education needs for RNs must be met by nursing education programs. Digital care is accessible, efficient and enables care regardless of geographical conditions, its innovative development needs to be based on science and experience and RNs are key personnel in this process.

A Hybrid System of Braden Scale and Machine Learning to Predict Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries (Bedsores): A Retrospective Observational Cohort Study

Background: The Braden Scale is commonly used to determine Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries (HAPI). However, the volume of patients who are identified as being at risk stretches already limited resources, and caregivers are limited by the number of factors that can reasonably assess during patient care. In the last decade, machine learning techniques have been used to predict HAPI by utilizing related risk factors. Nevertheless, none of these studies consider the change in patient status from admission until discharge. Objectives: To develop an integrated system of Braden and machine learning to predict HAPI and assist with resource allocation for early interventions. The proposed approach captures the change in patients' risk by assessing factors three times across hospitalization. Design: Retrospective observational cohort study. Setting(s): This research was conducted at ChristianaCare hospital in Delaware, United States. Participants: Patients discharged between May 2020 and February 2022. Patients with HAPI were identified from Nursing documents (N = 15,889). Methods: Support Vector Machine (SVM) was adopted to predict patients' risk for developing HAPI using multiple risk factors in addition to Braden. Multiple performance metrics were used to compare the results of the integrated system versus Braden alone. Results: The HAPI rate is 3%. The integrated system achieved better sensitivity (74.29 ± 1.23) and detection prevalence (24.27 ± 0.16) than the Braden scale alone (sensitivity (66.90 ± 4.66) and detection prevalence (41.96 ± 1.35)). The most important risk factors to predict HAPI were Braden sub-factors, overall Braden, visiting ICU during hospitalization, and Glasgow coma score. Conclusions: The integrated system which combines SVM with Braden offers better performance than Braden and reduces the number of patients identified as at-risk. Furthermore, it allows for better allocation of resources to high-risk patients. It will result in cost savings and better utilization of resources. Relevance to clinical practice: The developed model provides an automated system to predict HAPI patients in real time and allows for ongoing intervention for patients identified as at-risk. Moreover, the integrated system is used to determine the number of nurses needed for early interventions. Reporting Method: EQUATOR guidelines (TRIPOD) were adopted in this research to develop the prediction model. Patient or Public Contribution: This research was based on a secondary analysis of patients' Electronic Health Records. The dataset was de-identified and patient identifiers were removed before processing and modeling.

Challenges for Artificial Intelligence in Recognizing Mental Disorders

Artificial Intelligence (AI) appears to be making important advances in the prediction and diagnosis of mental disorders. Researchers have used visual, acoustic, verbal, and physiological features to train models to predict or aid in the diagnosis, with some success. However, such systems are rarely applied in clinical practice, mainly because of the many challenges that currently exist. First, mental disorders such as depression are highly subjective, with complex symptoms, individual differences, and strong socio-cultural ties, meaning that their diagnosis requires comprehensive consideration. Second, there are many problems with the current samples, such as artificiality, poor ecological validity, small sample size, and mandatory category simplification. In addition, annotations may be too subjective to meet the requirements of professional clinicians. Moreover, multimodal information does not solve the current challenges, and within-group variations are greater than between-group characteristics, also posing significant challenges for recognition. In conclusion, current AI is still far from effectively recognizing mental disorders and cannot replace clinicians' diagnoses in the near future. The real challenge for AI-based mental disorder diagnosis is not a technical one, nor is it wholly about data, but rather our overall understanding of mental disorders in general.

Automatic Assessment of Functional Movement Screening Exercises with Deep Learning Architectures

(1) Background: The success of physiotherapy depends on the regular and correct unsupervised performance of movement exercises. A system that automatically evaluates these exercises could increase effectiveness and reduce risk of injury in home based therapy. Previous approaches in this area rarely rely on deep learning methods and do not yet fully use their potential. (2) Methods: Using a measurement system consisting of 17 inertial measurement units, a dataset of four Functional Movement Screening exercises is recorded. Exercise execution is evaluated by physiotherapists using the Functional Movement Screening criteria. This dataset is used to train a neural network that assigns the correct Functional Movement Screening score to an exercise repetition. We use an architecture consisting of convolutional, long-short-term memory and dense layers. Based on this framework, we apply various methods to optimize the performance of the network. For the optimization, we perform an extensive hyperparameter optimization. In addition, we are comparing different convolutional neural network structures that have been specifically adapted for use with inertial measurement data. To test the developed approach, it is trained on the data from different Functional Movement Screening exercises and the performance is compared on unknown data from known and unknown subjects. (3) Results: The evaluation shows that the presented approach is able to classify unknown repetitions correctly. However, the trained network is yet unable to achieve consistent performance on the data of previously unknown subjects. Additionally, it can be seen that the performance of the network differs depending on the exercise it is trained for. (4) Conclusions: The present work shows that the presented deep learning approach is capable of performing complex motion analytic tasks based on inertial measurement unit data. The observed performance degradation on the data of unknown subjects is comparable to publications of other research groups that relied on classical machine learning methods. However, the presented approach can rely on transfer learning methods, which allow to retrain the classifier by means of a few repetitions of an unknown subject. Transfer learning methods could also be used to compensate for performance differences between exercises.

Cloud Gamification: Bibliometric Analysis and Research Advances

Research on gamification in the cloud has been increasing in recent years. The main objective of this work was to analyse the advances and progress reported in the scientific literature published internationally in cloud gamification from a bibliometric perspective. The scientific production in this field was identified using the Web of Science (WoS) database. The analysis was carried out with the support of the VOSviewer software, version 1.6.18, developed by van Eck and Waltman, for the graphical visualisation of bibliometric networks. The study period covered the time from the first publication on the subject in 2012 to 31 July 2022, with 108 documents detected. The most prolific author was Jacub Swacha from the University of Szczecin, Poland. Forty-seven countries published on Cloud Gamification, with Spain and Italy being the countries with the highest scientific production. The most productive organisations were Bucharest University of Economic Studies, Complutense University of Madrid, Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Szczecin. The journal with the highest output was Information. The groups in the producing countries, the authors, the organisations to which they belonged and the thematic areas of the studies were identified, as well as their evolution over time.

Using a Proximity-Detection Technology to Nudge for Physical Distancing in a Swedish Workplace During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Retrospective Case Study

BACKGROUND

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the emergence of several technologies for infectious disease management. Although much focus has been placed on contact-tracing apps, another promising new tactic is proximity tracing, which focuses on health-related behavior and can be used for primary prevention. Underpinned by theories on behavioral design, a proximity-detection system can be devised that provides a user with immediate nudges to maintain physical distance from others. However, the practical feasibility of proximity detection during an infectious disease outbreak has not been sufficiently investigated.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using a wearable device to nudge for distance and to gather important insights about how functionality and interaction are experienced by users. The results of this study can guide future research and design efforts in this emerging technology.

METHODS

In this retrospective case study, a wearable proximity-detection technology was used in a workplace for 6 weeks during the production of a music competition. The purpose of the technology was to nudge users to maintain their physical distance using auditory feedback. We used a mixed methods sequential approach, including interviews (n=8) and a survey (n=30), to compile the experiences of using wearable technology in a real-life setting.

RESULTS

We generated themes from qualitative analysis based on data from interviews and open-text survey responses. The quantitative data were subsequently integrated into these themes: feasibility (implementation and acceptance-establishing a shared problem; distance tags in context-strategy, environment, and activities; understanding and learning; and accomplishing the purpose) and design aspects (a purposefully annoying device; timing, tone, and proximity; and additional functions).

CONCLUSIONS

This empirical study reports on the feasibility of using wearable technology based on proximity detection to nudge individuals to maintain physical distance in the workplace. The technology supports attention to distance, but the usability of this approach is dependent on the context and situation. In certain situations, the audio signal is frustrating, but most users agree that it needs to be annoying to ensure sufficient behavioral adaption. We proposed a dual nudge that involves vibration followed by sound. There are indications that the technology also facilitates learning how to maintain a greater distance from others, and that this behavior can persist beyond the context of technology use. This study demonstrates that the key value of this technology is that it places the user in control and enables immediate action when the distance to others is not maintained. This study provides insights into the emerging field of personal and wearable technologies used for primary prevention during infectious disease outbreaks. Future research is needed to evaluate the preventive effect on transmission and investigate behavioral changes in detail and in relation to different forms of feedback.

The insufficiency of the Malaysian contact tracing app from the perspective of Chinese tourists: preparing for international tourism in the post-COVID-19 world

Understanding tourists' feedback on using Mysejahtera is critical for tourism recovery in these destinations, and even more so for countries like Malaysia and China, where national Contact Tracing Applications (CTA) are mandatory. However, Previous surveys on CTA use have mainly focused on voluntary CTA users, using qualitative research methods. In this research, Chinese overseas students in Malaysia are included as the reference group, and Chinese tourists with experiences traveling overseas are put into the experimental group. A total of 890 questionnaires were collected and taken as the original data to carry out the Chi-squared and Mann-Whitney U tests. Meanwhile, the experiment implemented a multiple linear regression mechanism to explore the variables that may improve the app Mysejahtera, with further analysis being conducted. According to the results, language issues are the most significant barrier to Chinese visitors using MySejahtera; the inability to register with a Chinese mobile phone number and the need to register a permanent address in Malaysia have a significant negative impact on the use of MySejahtera; and visitors' trust in science positively related to MySejahtera use.

Understanding the domain of driving distraction with knowledge graphs

This paper aims to provide insight into the driving distraction domain systematically on the basis of scientific knowledge graphs. For this purpose, 3,790 documents were taken into consideration after retrieving from Web of Science Core Collection and screening, and two types of knowledge graphs were constructed to demonstrate bibliometric information and domain-specific research content respectively. In terms of bibliometric analysis, the evolution of publication and citation numbers reveals the accelerated development of this domain, and trends of multidisciplinary and global participation could be identified according to knowledge graphs from Vosviewer. In terms of research content analysis, a new framework consisting of five dimensions was clarified, including "objective factors", "human factors", "research methods", "data" and "data science". The main entities of this domain were identified and relations between entities were extracted using Natural Language Processing methods with Python 3.9. In addition to the knowledge graph composed of all the keywords and relationships, entities and relations under each dimension were visualized, and relations between relevant dimensions were demonstrated in the form of heat maps. Furthermore, the trend and significance of driving distraction research were discussed, and special attention was given to future directions of this domain.

Indonesian Scientists’ Behavior Relative to Research Data Governance in Preventing WMD-Applicable Technology Transfer

Performing research data governance is critical for preventing the transfer of technologies related to weapons of mass destruction (WMD). While research data governance is common in developed countries, it is still often considered less necessary by research organizations in developing countries such as Indonesia. An investigation of research data governance behavior for Indonesian scientists was conducted in this study. The theories of planned behavior (TPB) and protection motivation (PMT) were used to explain the relationships between different factors influencing scientists’ behavior. The theories have been widely used in the information security domain, and the approach was adopted to build the research model of this study. The obtained data were analyzed using partial least-squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to answer the main research question: “what factors determine the likelihood of practicing research data governance by Indonesian scientists to prevent WMD-applicable technology transfer?” By learning what motivates scientists to adopt research data governance practices, organizations can design relevant strategies that are directed explicitly at stimulating positive responses. The results of this study can also be applied in other developing countries that have similar situations, such as Indonesia.

Continued Use of Contact-Tracing Apps in the United States and the United Kingdom: Insights From a Comparative Study Through the Lens of the Health Belief Model

BACKGROUND

To contain the spread of SARS-CoV-2, contact-tracing (CT) mobile apps were developed and deployed to identify and notify individuals who have exposure to the virus. However, the effectiveness of these apps depends not only on their adoption by the general population but also on their continued use in the long term. Limited research has investigated the facilitators of and barriers to the continued use of CT apps.

OBJECTIVE

In this study, we aimed to examine factors influencing the continued use intentions of CT apps based on the health belief model. In addition, we investigated the differences between users and nonusers and between the US and UK populations.

METHODS

We administered a survey in the United States and the United Kingdom. Respondents included individuals who had previously used CT technologies and those without experience. We used the structural equation modeling technique to validate the proposed research model and hypotheses.

RESULTS

Analysis of data collected from 362 individuals showed that perceived benefits, self-efficacy, perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, and cues to action positively predicted the continued use intentions of CT apps, while perceived barriers could reduce them. We observed few differences between the US and UK groups; the only exception was the effect of COVID-19 threat susceptibility, which was significant for the UK group but not for the US group. Finally, we found that the only significant difference between users and nonusers was related to perceived barriers, which may not influence nonusers' continued use intentions but significantly reduce experienced users' intentions.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings have implications for technological design and policy. These insights can potentially help governments, technology companies, and media outlets to create strategies and policies to promote app adoption for new users and sustain continued use for existing users in the long run.

Non-Contact Vibro-Acoustic Object Recognition Using Laser Doppler Vibrometry and Convolutional Neural Networks

Laser Doppler vibrometers (LDVs) have been widely adopted due to their large number of benefits in comparison to traditional contacting vibration transducers. Their high sensitivity, among other unique characteristics, has also led to their use as optical microphones, where the measurement of object vibration in the vicinity of a sound source can act as a microphone. Recent work enabling full correction of LDV measurement in the presence of sensor head vibration unlocks new potential applications, including integration within autonomous vehicles (AVs). In this paper, the common AV challenge of object classification is addressed by presenting and evaluating a novel, non-contact vibro-acoustic object recognition technique. This technique utilises a custom set-up involving a synchronised loudspeaker and scanning LDV to simultaneously remotely solicit and record responses to a periodic chirp excitation in various objects. The 864 recorded signals per object were pre-processed into spectrograms of various forms, which were used to train a ResNet-18 neural network via transfer learning to accurately recognise the objects based only on their vibro-acoustic characteristics. A five-fold cross-validation optimisation approach is described, through which the effects of data set size and pre-processing type on classification accuracy are assessed. A further assessment of the ability of the CNN to classify never-before-seen objects belonging to groups of similar objects on which it has been trained is then described. In both scenarios, the CNN was able to obtain excellent classification accuracy of over 99.7%. The work described here demonstrates the significant promise of such an approach as a viable non-contact object recognition technique suitable for various machine automation tasks, for example, defect detection in production lines or even loose rock identification in underground mines.

Effective Online Engagement Strategies Through Gamification

Gamification has recently been discovered as an excellent user engagement strategy that has the potential to improve online education, online brand engagement, and information system engagement. Even though the number of studies on gamification has expanded, there is currently no systematic literature review approach for categorizing its online engagement strategies. Therefore, the main purpose of this systematic literature review is to find effective online engagement strategies based on gamification. The literature, as published in top management, information systems, and education journals, was reviewed using preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and authors categorized the studies published during the period 2016 to 2021. This study can be considered as among the first to include a systematic literature review with a potential future research agenda on effective online engagement strategies through gamification. The findings indicate several effective online engagement strategies through gamification for three major aspects.

Green supply chain management/green finance: a bibliometric analysis of the last twenty years by using the Scopus database

Mostly, the product manufacturer and activities related to transportation have a greater influence on the supply chain and the environment. Hence, the green investment in water, biodiversity protection, waste treatment, resources, and climate change alleviation help in enhancing industrial production. Thus, for the enhancement of green growth, the industries must adopt green financing by making investments in ecology, climate change, and carbon reduction. Despite having the greatest growth in green supply chain management, still, the implementations of greening the product and processes have not been seen properly in many industries. A bibliometric analysis was conducted through VOS viewer version 1.6.7. of last twenty years (2001-2021). A total of 2385 articles were retrieved from the Scopus database. The results revealed that China, India, Iran, and Taiwan have a vast collection of articles and have very strong international collaborations. The most cited authors were Sarkis, J., Zhu, Q., and Khan, S.A.R. The results also suggest that green supply chain management research was related to the field of engineering, environmental science, energy sciences, social sciences, and business management. Some new areas are discovered like green innovation, green information technology, green productivity, corporate environmental responsibility, green investments, green credit, and green credit policy. As evidenced from our bibliographic database search, it is observed that integrated work on green supply chain management and green finance is limited, and this makes this research work to be novel. This study is beneficial for credit managers and policymakers.

NeuroConstruct: 3D Reconstruction and Visualization of Neurites in Optical Microscopy Brain Images

We introduce NeuroConstruct, a novel end-to-end application for the segmentation, registration, and visualization of brain volumes imaged using wide-field microscopy. NeuroConstruct offers a Segmentation Toolbox with various annotation helper functions that aid experts to effectively and precisely annotate micrometer resolution neurites. It also offers an automatic neurites segmentation using convolutional neuronal networks (CNN) trained by the Toolbox annotations and somas segmentation using thresholding. To visualize neurites in a given volume, NeuroConstruct offers a hybrid rendering by combining iso-surface rendering of high-confidence classified neurites, along with real-time rendering of raw volume using a 2D transfer function for voxel classification score versus voxel intensity value. For a complete reconstruction of the 3D neurites, we introduce a Registration Toolbox that provides automatic coarse-to-fine alignment of serially sectioned samples. The quantitative and qualitative analysis show that NeuroConstruct outperforms the state-of-the-art in all design aspects. NeuroConstruct was developed as a collaboration between computer scientists and neuroscientists, with an application to the study of cholinergic neurons, which are severely affected in Alzheimer's disease.

Social-Ecological Measurement of Daily Life: How Relationally Focused Ambulatory Assessment can Advance Clinical Intervention Science

Individuals’ daily behaviors and social interactions play a central role in the diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders. Despite this, observational ambulatory assessment methods—research methods that allow for direct and passive assessment of individuals’ momentary activities and interactions—have a remarkably scant history in the clinical science field. Prior discussions of ambulatory assessment methods in clinical science have focused on subjective methods (e.g., ecological momentary assessment) and physiological methods (e.g., wearable heart rate monitoring). Comparatively less attention has been dedicated to ambulatory assessment methods that collect objective, relational data about individuals’ social behaviors and their interactions with their momentary environmental contexts. Drawing on extant social-ecological measurement frameworks, this article first provides a conceptual and psychometric rationale for the integration of daily relational data into clinical science research. Next, the nascent research applying such methods to clinical science is reviewed, and priorities for further research organized by the NIH Stage Model for Clinical Science Research are recommended. These data can provide unique information about the social contexts of diverse patient populations; identify social-ecological targets for transdiagnostic, precision, and culturally responsive interventions; and contribute novel data about the effectiveness of established interventions at creating behavioral and relational change.

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based iTrain Serious Game for Caregivers Dealing with Post-Stroke Patients

This paper describes a serious game based on a knowledge transfer model using deep reinforcement learning, with an aim to improve the caretakers’ knowledge and abilities in post-stroke care. The iTrain game was designed to improve caregiver knowledge and abilities by providing non-traditional training to formal and informal caregivers who deal with stroke survivors. The methodologies utilized professional medical experiences and real-life evidence data gathered during the duration of the iTrain project to create the scenarios for the game’s deep reinforcement caregiver behavior improvement model, as well as the design of game mechanics, game images and game characters, and gameplay implementation. Furthermore, the results of the game’s direct impact on caregivers (n = 25) and stroke survivors (n = 21) in Lithuania using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and user experience questionnaire (UEQ) are presented. Both surveys had favorable outcomes, showing the effectiveness of the approach. The GDS scale (score 10) revealed a low number of 28% of individuals depressed, and the UEQ received a very favorable grade of +0.8.

A Sign Language Recognition System Applied to Deaf-Mute Medical Consultation

It is an objective reality that deaf-mute people have difficulty seeking medical treatment. Due to the lack of sign language interpreters, most hospitals in China currently do not have the ability to interpret sign language. Normal medical treatment is a luxury for deaf people. In this paper, we propose a sign language recognition system: Heart-Speaker. Heart-Speaker is applied to a deaf-mute consultation scenario. The system provides a low-cost solution for the difficult problem of treating deaf-mute patients. The doctor only needs to point the Heart-Speaker at the deaf patient and the system automatically captures the sign language movements and translates the sign language semantics. When a doctor issues a diagnosis or asks a patient a question, the system displays the corresponding sign language video and subtitles to meet the needs of two-way communication between doctors and patients. The system uses the MobileNet-YOLOv3 model to recognize sign language. It meets the needs of running on embedded terminals and provides favorable recognition accuracy. We performed experiments to verify the accuracy of the measurements. The experimental results show that the accuracy rate of Heart-Speaker in recognizing sign language can reach 90.77%.
