Chemically diverse small molecule fluorescent chemosensors for copper ion

A highly selective multi-responsive fluorescence sensor for Zn2+ based on a diarylethene with a 4,6-dimethylpyrimidine unit

A novel turn-on mode fluorescent diarylethene containing a 4,6-dimethylpyrimidine unit was developed to fluorescently sense Zn2+. Its multiple-responsive properties induced by Zn2+/EDTA and ultraviolet/visible light have been systematically studied. The fluorescence sensor could efficiently detect Zn2+ with a 10 times enhancement of emission intensity and fluorescence color change (dark-green). In addition, the sensor showed clear discrimination from Cd2+. The limit of detection of the sensor was measured to be 8.48 × 10-8 mol L-1 for Zn2+. Finally, a molecular logic circuit was fabricated with the emission at 528 nm as the output signal and light and chemical stimuli as input signals.

A 4,5-quinolimide-based fluorescent sensor for sequential detection of Cu2+ and cysteine in water and living cells with application in a memorized device

In this study, a new 4,5-quinolimide-based fluorescent sensor BNC was synthesized and characterized. BNC showed single selectivity for Cu²⁺via the "turn-off" fluorescence among various common metal ions. After forming a 1:1 stoichiometric complex with Cu²⁺, the detection limit (LOD) of BNC for Cu²⁺ was measured to be 0.44 μM. Subsequently, the in situ generated BNC-Cu²⁺ complex had been used for sensing Cys with the LOD of 1.5 μM through the displacement strategy, resulting in the revivable emission of BNC. According to the "off-on-off" fluorescence cycle of BNC generated by the alternate addition of Cu²⁺ and Cys, a reversible memorized device with "read-write-read-erase" behavior was constructed at the molecular level. Furthermore, the recoveries of Cu²⁺ in lake water with BNC were in the range of 95.0-105%. And sequential fluorescence imagings of BNC for Cu²⁺ and Cys were successfully applied in living yeast cells.

Switching on the Fluorescence Emission of Polypyridine Ligands by Simultaneous Zinc(II) Binding and Protonation

The synthesis and characterization of the two new open-chain ligands 1,15-bis-[6-(2,2'-bipyridyl)]-2,5,8,11,14-pentaaza-octadecane (L1) and 1,15-bis-[2-(1,10-phenanthroline)-9-methyl]-2,5,8,11,14-pentaazaoctadecane (L2), both featuring a tetraethylenpentaamine chain linking via methylene bridges the 6 and 2 positions of two identical 2,2'-bipyridyl (bpy) and 9-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline (9-methyl-phen) moieties respectively, are reported. Their protonation and binding ability for Cu²⁺ , Zn²⁺ , Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ have been studied by coupling potentiometric titrations with UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission measurements in water. L1 and L2 afford stable mono- and dinuclear complexes, in which the metal ion is bound by a single bpy or 9-methyl-phen unit and the amine groups on the aliphatic chain. However, L1 displays a greater binding ability for Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ with respect to L2, the stability constants of the [ML1]²⁺ complexes being 21.8 (Cu²⁺ ) and 19.4 (Zn²⁺ ) log units vs 20.34 and 16.8 log. units for the corresponding L2 species. Among all the metal ions tested, only the Zn²⁺ complex with L2 features an enhanced fluorescence emission at neutral pH, thanks to the simultaneous binding of one Zn²⁺ ion and H⁺ ion(s), that inhibits any possible photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process from the amine donors to the excited phen moiety. Binding of a second metal switches off the emission again.

Colorimetric and fluorescence sensing of Zn2+ ion and its bio-imaging applications based on macrocyclic "tet a" derivative

We report on the synthesis and characterization of trans N, N'-di-substituted macrocyclic "tet a" probe (L) for metal ion sensing. Both the colorimetric and fluorescent titration studies are performed with different metal ions. The results have suggested that the probe L is very selective and sensitive towards Zn²⁺ ions with significant changes in color. The pendant armed macrocyclic "tet a" probe has exhibited 1.28× 10⁵ M^-1 binding constant and virtuous selectivity for Zn²⁺ ion than other common metal ions. The detection limit of the probe towards Zn²⁺ ion is 0.027 nM. The selective sensing of Zn²⁺ ion is efficiently reversible with EDTA, which is demonstrated for five cycles without losing sensitivity. The time-resolved single-photon counting (TCSPC) studies have determined the average lifetime value for the probe L and L+ Zn²⁺ ion of 1.29 and 2.96 ns, respectively. The theoretical DFT studies have well supported the experimental outcomes. The practical application of the probe in visualizing intracellular Zn²⁺ ion distribution in live Artemia salina has proved the low cytotoxicity and cell membrane permeability of probe, which makes it capable of sensing Zn²⁺ ion in HeLa cells. Thus, the probe L can act as a selective recognition of Zn²⁺ ion in living cell applications.

A squaraine-based fluorescence turn on chemosensor with ICT character for highly selective and sensitive detection of Al3+ in aqueous media and its application in living cell imaging

A novel and simple squaraine-based fluorescent chemosensor SQ-BH bearing the benzoylhydrazine moiety was developed for the highly sensitive and selective detection of Al³⁺ in methanol-water mixture. The chemosensing behaviors of SQ-BH and its binding interaction with Al³⁺ were explored by various spectroscopic analyses. The reversibility of Al³⁺ recognition process was investigated using EDTA. The results of experiments and DFT/TDDFT calculations revealed that the chemosensor SQ-BH obeyed a turn on mechanism which was associated with the inhibited photoinduced electron transfer (PET), the enhanced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and the activated chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF). Furthermore, the fluorescent chemosensor SQ-BH whose excellent biocompatibility was confirmed by a standard MTT assay could be used to detect Al³⁺ in living cells, indicating its potential application value in biological fields.

A highly selective colorimetric and fluorescent probe for quantitative detection of Cu2+/Co2+: The unique ON-OFF-ON fluorimetric detection strategy and applications in living cells/zebrafish

Identifying and detecting similar target cations through combining "turn on" and "turn off" fluorescence mechanism is effective and challenging. Now a new colorimetric and ON-OFF-ON fluorescent probe N'-((7-(diethylamino)-2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)methylene)-3-hydroxy-2-naphthohydrazide (L) was reported, which could detect Cu²⁺ and Co²⁺ in phosphate buffered CH₃CH₂OH-H₂O solvent system. With the assistance of glutathione and pH adjustment, a unique ON-OFF-ON fluorescence detection strategy could be achieved for distinguishing Cu²⁺ and Co²⁺. The emission of probe could recover from the L-Cu²⁺ and L-Co²⁺ system by addition of GSH or adjusting pH value to 4, respectively, which is due to the abolishment of paramagnetic Cu²⁺/Co²⁺. Based on fluorescence titration experiments, the limit of detection was determined as 3.84 × 10^-9 M and 4.55 × 10^-9 M for Cu²⁺ and Co²⁺, respectively. Meanwhile, the detection limit reached 6.21 × 10^-8 M for Cu²⁺ and 6.96 × 10^-8 M for Co²⁺ according to absorbance signal output. Fast recognition of Cu²⁺/Co²⁺ can be achieved by obvious color changes from green to colorless under UV light, as well as from yellow to orange-red in room light. The binding mode of L toward Cu²⁺ and Co²⁺ have been systematically studied by Job's plot analysis, ESI-MS, IR and density functional theory calculations. Most strikingly, further practical applications of the probe L in fluorescence imaging were investigated in MCF-7 cells and zebrafish due to its low cytotoxicity and good optical properties, suggesting that L could serve as a fluorescent sensor for tracking Cu²⁺ and Co²⁺in vivo.

A new "turn-on" fluorescence probe based on hydrazine-triggered tandem reaction

Hydrazine is extremely harmful to the human body. The leakage of hydrazine is liable to cause potential safety hazards. Here, we reported a new fluorescence probe based on the tandem reaction. The hydrazine-triggered hydrazinolysis-cyclization resulted in the formation of the iminocoumarin. The fluorescence intensity at 522 nm of the probe increased after the reaction with hydrazine. There was a linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity and the concentration of hydrazine (0.14-120.00 μM). The LOD of the probe to N₂H₄ was 1.36 ppb. Notably, the probe could detect hydrazine in BT474 cells and tap water.

A novel colorimetric and "turn-off" fluorescent probe based on catalyzed hydrolysis reaction for detection of Cu2+ in real water and in living cells

A novel and highly selective fluorescent 1,8-naphthalimide-based probe, 3, was designed and synthesized for rapid Cu²⁺ detection in a CH₃CN-H₂O (3:1, v/v, pH = 7.4) solution by means of a distinct hydrolysis mechanism via its Cu²⁺-promoting feature. Upon treatment with Cu²⁺, the fluorescence response of probe 3 at 550 nm abruptly decreased, which was visible to the naked eye, and this response was accompanied by a clear change of the color of the solution; the color changed from the original yellow color to colorless. This color change occurred due to the Cu²⁺-promoted hydrolysis of 3, which yielded a fluorescence-quenched product. It is inspiring that probe 3 exhibited excellent sensitivity, a short response time and strong anti-interference recognition. Compared with the allowable amount of Cu²⁺ (∼20 μM) in drinking water, the detection limit of 3 for Cu²⁺ is calculated to be 9.15 nM, which is much lower than the amount defined by standards. The probe can be successfully applied for the determination of Cu²⁺ in real aqueous samples. Furthermore, probe 3 can be used as a fluorescent sensor to detect Cu²⁺ in biological environments, demonstrating its low toxicity to organisms and good cell permeability in live cell imaging.

Aggregation induced emission active fluorescent sensor for the sensitive detection of Hg2+ based on organic-inorganic hybrid mesoporous material

We report the preparation of an organic-inorganic hybrid mesoporous material, PHC-SBA-15, derived from the coupling of a pyrene-based derivative PHC and mesoporous SBA-15 silica. Compared with the stable aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties of PHC, those of PHC-SBA-15 were more promoted and active due to the fixation of PHC and the space limitation in mesoporous SBA-15. The aggregation and disaggregation activities can be tuned by controlling the concentrations in aqueous media and changing the fluorescence color from yellow to blue. In addition to the controllable AIE properties, PHC-SBA-15 was applied for the highly selective and sensitive detection of Hg²⁺ through the fluorescence quenching of monomeric pyrene in aqueous media. The fluorescence intensity at 395 nm was linearly proportional to that of Hg²⁺ in the concentration ranges of 0-1.0 × 10^-5 and 1.0 × 10^-5-10 × 10^-5 M, showing a low detection limit of 1.02 × 10^-7 M. This work provides an effective strategy for modulating the AIE properties from non-active to active by introducing AIE stable molecule into mesoporous silica material. This method also favors the development of fluorescent sensors for detecting targets with high sensitivity and selectivity in aqueous media with less synthetic difficulties.

Double-detecting fluorescent sensor for ATP based on Cu2+ and Zn2+ response of hydrazono-bis-tetraphenylethylene

Although all kinds of sensors with unique detecting ability for one guest were reported, the fluorescence sensor with multiple detecting abilities was seldom presented. This work designed and synthesized a novel AIE fluorescence probe bearing double detecting for ATP based on Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ response of hydrazono-bis-tetraphenylethylene (Bis-TPE). Bis-TPE was prepared in 82% yield with simple procedure. It exhibited strong red AIE fluorescence based on the large conjugated electron effect in aqueous media. It showed outstanding selective sensing abilities for Cu²⁺ by strong fluorescence quenching and for Zn²⁺ by red-orange fluorescence change. The sensing mechanism of 1:1 stoichiometric ratios was confirmed by ¹H NMR and MS study. The strong red fluorescence of Bis-TPE + Cu²⁺ system could be recovered by adding ATP. The orange fluorescence of Bis-TPE + Zn²⁺ system could be quenched by adding Cu²⁺ and then was recovered by adding ATP. These double detecting abilities for ATP with the "off-on" red fluorescence in Bis-TPE + Cu²⁺ system and "allochroic-off-on" orange fluorescence in Bis-TPE + Zn²⁺+Cu²⁺ system were successfully applied to test Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺ and ATP in test paper and living cell imaging, displaying the good application prospects for sensing Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺ and double detecting ATP in the complicated environment.

Fast and selective detection of mercury ions in environmental water by paper-based fluorescent sensor using boronic acid functionalized MoS2 quantum dots

In this study, the B-MoS₂ QDs, boronic acid functionalized MoS₂ quantum dots, are synthesized by a simple aminoacylation reaction between MoS₂ QDs and 3-aminobenzeneboronic acid (APBA). It not only exhibits excellent thermo-stability, photo-stability and good salt tolerance, but shows excellent fluorescence stability even under industrial wastewater with high concentration. These good characters can be used to construct a new fluorescence sensor for sensitive and selective detection of mercury ions (Hg²⁺). The fluorescence intensity of B-MoS₂ QDs linearly decreases with the increase of Hg²⁺ concentration ranging from 0.005 to 41 μmol L^-1, and the limit of detection as low as 1.8 nmol L^-1. Due to the mercury ion-promoted transmetalation reaction of aryl boronic acid, this proposed method exhibits fast response, ultra-sensitivity and high selectivity for analysis of Hg²⁺ in different environmental water, and which also uses to online monitoring of Hg²⁺. The B-MoS₂ QDs-based test paper can be used to detect the trace amounts of Hg²⁺ under UV lamp by naked eyes, suggesting that the proposed method has potential application in on-site monitoring of environmental Hg²⁺.

A phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole-based AIE active fluorescence probe for sequential detection of Ag+/AgNPs and SCN- in water and saliva samples and its application in living cells

Ag⁺ and SCN^- play extremely important roles in the fields of the physiology and environment. In this work, on the basis of phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole derivative (DIPIP) which can exhibit the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties in aqueous solution, we achieved a sequential on-off-on switch for Ag⁺ and SCN^- with high selectivity and sensitivity. A remarkable fluorescence quenching effect of Ag⁺ on the probe DIPIP was observed with 1:2 stoichiometry, Subsequently, the fluorescence intensity of in situ generated DIPIP-Ag⁺ ensemble was easily switched on after the interaction between Ag⁺ and SCN^-, which was attributed to the stronger affinity of SCN^- to capture Ag⁺. In particular, the extreme limits of detection (LOD) for Ag⁺ and SCN^- in standard solutions were as low as to be 74.5 nM and 7.8 nM, respectively. Furthermore, the probe DIPIP and the DIPIP-Ag⁺ ensemble could be used to detect Ag⁺ in the real water and SCN^- in smoker saliva samples, respectively. In addition, the sequential "on-off-on" fluorescence mode of DIPIP to Ag⁺ and SCN^- were also successfully applied in living HeLa cells.

6-Polyamino-substituted quinolines: synthesis and multiple metal (CuII, HgII and ZnII) monitoring in aqueous media

Chemoselective palladium-catalyzed arylation of polyamines with 6-bromoquinoline has been explored to prepare chelators for the detection of metal cations in aqueous media. The introduction of a single aromatic moiety into non-protected polyamine molecules was achieved using the commercially available Pd(dba)2/BINAP precatalyst to afford nitrogen chelators, in which the aromatic signalling unit is directly attached to the polyamine residue. Water-soluble receptors were then synthesized using N-alkylation of these polyamines by hydrophilic coordinating residues. By combining rich photophysical properties of the 6-aminoquinoline unit with a high coordination affinity of chelating polyamines and a hydrophilic character of carboxamido-substituted phosphonic acid diesters in a single molecular device, we synthesized chemosensor 5 for selective double-channel (UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies) detection of CuII ions in aqueous media at physiological levels. This receptor is suitable for the analysis of drinking water and fabrication of paper test strips for the naked-eye detection of CuII ions under UV-light. By increasing the number of donor sites we also obtained chemosensor 6 which is efficient for the detection of HgII ions. Moreover, chemosensor 6 is also suitable for multiple detection of metal ions because it chelates not only HgII but also CuII and ZnII ions displaying different responses of emission in the presence of these three cations.

Biliverdin-copper complex at physiological pH

Biliverdin (BV), a product of heme catabolism, is known to interact with transition metals, but the details of such interactions under physiological conditions are scarce. Herein, we examined coordinate/redox interactions of BV with Cu2+ in phosphate buffer at pH 7.4, using spectrophotometry, HESI-MS, Raman spectroscopy, 1H NMR, EPR, fluorimetry, and electrochemical methods. BV formed a stable coordination complex with copper in 1 : 1 stoichiometry. The structure of BV was more planar and energetically stable in the complex. The complex showed strong paramagnetic effects that were attributed to an unpaired delocalized e-. The delocalized electron may come from BV or Cu2+, so the complex is formally composed either of BV radical cation and Cu1+ or of BV radical anion and Cu3+. The complex underwent oxidation only in the presence of both O2 and an excess of Cu2+, or a strong oxidizing agent, and it was resistant to reducing agents. The biological effects of the stable BV metallocomplex containing a delocalized unpaired electron should be further examined, and may provide an answer to the long-standing question of high energy investment in the catabolism of BV, which represents a relatively harmless molecule per se.

Colorimetric determination of copper(II) by using branched-polyethylenimine droplet evaporation on a superhydrophilic-superhydrophobic micropatterned surface

A colorimetric method is described for the determination of Cu(II). It is based on branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) droplet evaporation on a superhydrophilic-superhydrophobic polystyrene micropatterned surface. Exposure to Cu(II) leads to a color change from colorless to light blue and dark blue. The micropatterned surface was fabricated via combining electrospinning with oxygen plasma and served as a detection substrate. Analysis requires only a single drop of blood. The method has a linear response in the 5.0 μM to 2.5 mM Cu(II) concentration range which is within the physiological range (15.7 ∼ 23.6 μM). Compared to an assay in solution, the detection limit is decreased from 386 nM to 89 nM. Excellent selectivity over other metal ions and anions was achieved. Graphical abstract A rapid and sensitive colorimetric detection platform for Cu(II) was fabricated by using branched-polyethylenimine droplet evaporation on a superhydrophilic-superhydrophobic micropatterned surface. Only a single drop of blood was needed for the analysis. The sensitivity was improved about 4.3 times.

Diaminomaleonitrile-based Fluorophores as Highly Selective Sensing Platform for Cu2

A colorimetric and turn-on fluorescent chemodosimeter 1 based on diaminomaleonitrile was synthesized for Cu²⁺ detection. It showed high selectivity and sensitivity towards Cu²⁺ over the other tested metal ions. Probe 1 in acetonitrile exhibited a strong absorption band at 530 nm and weak fluorescence emission when excited at 480 nm, while the addition of Cu²⁺ could lead to a 30-nm blue shift of the absorption band and a remarkable fluorescence enhancement. Moreover, the detection limit of probe 1 for Cu²⁺ was calculated to be 28 nM. Quite different from the reported mechanism based on a metal-complexation induced fluorescence enhancement, the sensing mechanism was proved to be based on the Cu²⁺-promoted hydrolysis reaction, which was confirmed by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR and mass spectrum analysis. Studies on probe 2 were carried out to verify the universality of this sensing mechanism.

Execution of julolidine based derivative as bifunctional chemosensor for Zn2+ and Cu2+ ions: Applications in bio-imaging and molecular logic gate

A simple julolidine based chemosensor (JT) was designed and synthesized by single condensation step. JT displayed excellent selectivity and sensitivity with on-off responses towards Zn²⁺ and Cu²⁺ over other biologically relevant metal ions in aqueous media. Upon addition of Zn²⁺ ions, JT exhibited a significant blue shift in emission followed by turn-on enhancement while with Cu²⁺, the fluorescence intensity of JT was completely vanished. The 1:1 binding affinity between JT and Zn²⁺/Cu²⁺ was proposed by Job's plot analysis. The detection limit for Zn²⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions reached at 3.5 × 10^-8 M and 1.46 × 10^-6 M, respectively. The sensing mechanism of JT with Zn²⁺/Cu²⁺ was supported by DFT calculations. Based on photophysical studies and its reversibility environment with EDTA, molecular logic gates were fabricated. Furthermore, JT was successfully established to detect intracellular Zn²⁺ ions in live cells by turn-on response.

Carbon dots as an "on-off-on" fluorescent probe for detection of Cu(II) ion, ascorbic acid, and acid phosphatase

Carbon dot (CD)-based fluorescent probes have been widely exploited; however, multi-component detection using CDs without tedious surface modification is always a challenging task. Here, we develop a convenient and simple CD-based "on-off-on" fluorescent probe for detection of copper(II) ion (Cu²⁺), ascorbic acid (AA), and acid phosphatase (ACP). Cu²⁺ leads to the fluorescence quenching of CDs. The limit of detection (LOD) for Cu²⁺ is 2.4 μM. When AA is added into the CDs + Cu²⁺ solution, Cu²⁺ is reduced by AA to Cu⁺, causing the fluorescence recovery of CDs. The fluorescent intensity linearly correlates with the concentration of AA in the range of 100-2800 μM with LOD of 60 μM. Besides, the probe has potential application for detection of AA in real samples such as VC tablets, orange juice, and fresh orange. The probe can also indirectly detect ACP that enzymatically hydrolyzes ascorbic acid-phosphate (AAP) to produce AA. This work expands the application of CDs in the multi-component detection and provides a facile fluorescent probe for detection of AA in real samples. Graphical abstract.

Coumarin-Based Small-Molecule Fluorescent Chemosensors

Coumarins are a very large family of compounds containing the unique 2H-chromen-2-one motif, as it is known according to IUPAC nomenclature. Coumarin derivatives are widely found in nature, especially in plants and are constituents of several essential oils. Up to now, thousands of coumarin derivatives have been isolated from nature or produced by chemists. More recently, the coumarin platform has been widely adopted in the design of small-molecule fluorescent chemosensors because of its excellent biocompatibility, strong and stable fluorescence emission, and good structural flexibility. This scaffold has found wide applications in the development of fluorescent chemosensors in the fields of molecular recognition, molecular imaging, bioorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, materials chemistry, as well as in the biology and medical science communities. This review focuses on the important progress of coumarin-based small-molecule fluorescent chemosensors during the period of 2012-2018. This comprehensive and critical review may facilitate the development of more powerful fluorescent chemosensors for broad and exciting applications in the future.

Small-molecule fluorescent probes for specific detection and imaging of chemical species inside lysosomes

In the past few years, the preparation of novel small-molecule fluorescent probes for specific detection and imaging of chemical species inside lysosomes has attracted considerable attention because of their wide applications in chemistry, biology, and medical science. This feature article summarizes the recent advances in the design and preparation of small-molecule fluorescent probes for specific detection of chemical species inside lysosomes. In addition, their properties and applications for the detection and imaging of pH, H2O2, HOCl, O2˙-, lipid peroxidation, H2S, HSO3-, thiols, NO, ONOO-, HNO, Zn2+, Cu2+, enzymes, etc. in lysosomes are discussed as well.

A novel 2,5-bis(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)phenol scaffold-based ratiometric fluorescent probe for sensing cysteine in aqueous solution and serum

An efficient and novel 2,5-bis(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)phenol scaffold-based ratiometric fluorescent probe BTP-Cys for the sensing of cysteine has been developed. The probe BTP-Cys with acrylates moiety, as recognition site, has been successfully constructed on account of the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism. Upon the treatment with Cys (0-250 μM), this probe BTP-Cys exhibits a dramatic fluorescent intensity ratios enhancement (from 0.03 to 18.3) and a large emission shift (113 nm). The detection limit of this probe is as low as 3.8 × 10^-7 M. Importantly, the concentration and time dependent of Cys in bovine serum albumin (BSA) has also been measured, indicating that BTP-Cys could be a biocompatible and rapid probe for Cys in vitro.

Novel polysiloxane-based rhodamine B fluorescent probe for selectively detection of Al3+ and its application in living-cell and zebrafish imaging

Polysiloxanes have excellent stability and biological relevance and are suitable for biological research. However, there were few polysiloxane-based fluorescent probes for bioimaging. This report successfully designed a new polysiloxane-based polymer fluorescent probe (RB-1) for the first time as a "turn-on" fluorescent probe response to Al³⁺ ion with highly sensitive and selectivity. Importantly, this probe could also apply both in cell and zebrafish imaging, indicating the huge application development prospects of polysiloxane-based fluorescent probes in future.

Synthesis of green fluorescent carbon materials using byproducts of the sulfite-pulping procedure residue for live cell imaging and Ag+ ion determination

A simple synthesis strategy was designed and applied to synthesize nitrogen and sulfur co-doped aminated ligninsulfonate/graphene quantum dots (ASL/GQDs) composites using citric acid monohydrate and byproducts of the sulfite-pulping procedure (sodium lignosulfonate). The combination of these two materials improves surface chemical activities and electronic characteristics. As a result，the combination offers excellent photoluminescence properties and sensitivity. The fluorescence intensity of the as-prepared ASL/GQDs composites is more than three times that of the free GQDs. ASL/GQDs based fluorescent probe was applied to sensitively determine Ag⁺ with a good linearity in a range from 0.005 to 500 μM with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. The method was also used successfully to determine the amount of Ag⁺ in environmental water samples. Using an MTT assay, the ASL/GQDs have low toxicity and are biocompatible with A549 cells, and may be successfully used to image A549 cells.

Thiazoline-pyrene selective and sensitive fluorescence "turn-on" sensor for detection of Cu2

A thiazoline and pyrene containing sensor 1 was synthesized via one-pot reaction and utilized as a highly selective and sensitive fluorescence "turn-on" sensor for Cu²⁺ detection, via the fluorescence enhancement of pyrene monomer emission. The 2:1 stoichiometry of 1 and Cu²⁺ was calculated from Job's plots based on fluorescent titrations, and the complexation of 1 with Cu²⁺ was also supported by mass spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectra, proton NMR spectra and density functional theory analysis. The fluorescence intensity of 1 at 389 nm and 410 nm increased significantly upon the addition of Cu²⁺. Limit of detection and association constant value of 1-Cu²⁺ were calculated using standard deviations and linear fittings, respectively. Results showed that 1 was active for Cu²⁺ detection in the wide pH range of 2.0-11.0.

An "off-on" fluorescent sensor for copper ion using graphene quantum dots based on oxidation of l-cysteine

A simple and highly efficient "off-on" fluorescent sensor based on grapheme quantum dots (GQDs) for Cu²⁺ was developed. In this sensing platform, the fluorescence of GQDs was quenched in the presence of 2,4-dinitrophenylcysteine (DNPC), which is the reaction product of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB) and l-cysteine, owing to the spectral overlap between the absorption of DNPC and the excitation of GQDs. In the presence of Cu²⁺, l-cysteine was catalytically oxidized to l-cystine by O₂, resulting in the reduction of DNPC. Thus, the fluorescence of GQDs was recovery. Based on this, the fluorescent detection of Cu²⁺ could be achieved. The proposed sensing strategy offered a selective identification of Cu²⁺ with a detection limit of 4.5 nM. Additionally, the practical application of this assay for Cu²⁺ determination in real water samples was also demonstrated.
