State-of-the-Art Advances of Nanomedicine for Diagnosis and Treatment of Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer is a common malignant tumor of the urinary system. Cystoscopy, urine cytology, and CT are the routine diagnostic methods. However, there are some problems such as low sensitivity and difficulty in staging, which must be urgently supplemented by novel diagnostic methods. Surgery, intravesical instillation, systemic chemotherapy, and radiotherapy are the main clinical treatments for bladder cancer. It is difficult for conventional treatment to deal with tumor recurrence, progression and drug resistance. In addition, the treatment agents usually have the defects of poor specific distribution ability to target tumor tissues and side effects. The rapid development of nanomedicine has brought hope for the treatment of bladder cancer in reducing side effects, enhancing tumor inhibition effects, and anti-drug resistance. Overall, we review the new progression of nano-platforms in the diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer.

Preparation of Betulinic Acid Galactosylated Chitosan Nanoparticles and Their Effect on Liver Fibrosis

Aim

Liver fibrosis is mainly characterized by the formation of fibrous scars. Galactosylated chitosan (GC) has gained increasing attention as a liver-targeted drug carrier in recent years. The present study aimed to investigate the availability of betulinic acid-loaded GC nanoparticles (BA-GC-NPs) for liver protection. Covalently-conjugated galactose, recognized by asialoglycoprotein receptors exclusively expressed in hepatocytes, was employed to target the liver.

Materials and Methods

Galactose was coupled to chitosan by chemical covalent binding. BA-GC-NPs were synthesized by wrapping BA into NPs via ion-crosslinking method. The potential advantage of BA-GC-NP as a liver-targeting agent in the treatment of liver fibrosis has been demonstrated in vivo and in vitro.

Results

BA-GC-NPs with diameters <200 nm were manufactured in a virtually spherical core-shell arrangement, and BA was released consistently and continuously for 96 h, as assessed by an in vitro release assay. According to the safety evaluation, BA-GC-NPs demonstrated good biocompatibility at the cellular level and did not generate any inflammatory reaction in mice. Importantly, BA-GC-NPs showed an inherent liver-targeting potential in the uptake behavioral studies in cells and bioimaging tests in vivo. Efficacy tests revealed that administering BA-GC-NPs in a mouse model of liver fibrosis reduced the degree of liver injury in mice.

Conclusion

The findings showed that BA-GC-NPs form a safe and effective anti-hepatic fibrosis medication delivery strategy.

Recent Advances of Chitosan Formulations in Biomedical Applications

Chitosan, a naturally abundant cationic polymer, is chemically composed of cellulose-based biopolymers derived by deacetylating chitin. It offers several attractive characteristics such as renewability, hydrophilicity, biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity towards gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi, etc., because of which it is receiving immense attention as a biopolymer for a plethora of applications including drug delivery, protective coating materials, food packaging films, wastewater treatment, and so on. Additionally, its structure carries reactive functional groups that enable several reactions and electrochemical interactions at the biomolecular level and improves the chitosan’s physicochemical properties and functionality. This review article highlights the extensive research about the properties, extraction techniques, and recent developments of chitosan-based composites for drug, gene, protein, and vaccine delivery applications. Its versatile applications in tissue engineering and wound healing are also discussed. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives for chitosan in biomedical applications are elucidated.

Application of Nano-Inspired Scaffolds-Based Biopolymer Hydrogel for Bone and Periodontal Tissue Regeneration

This review’s objectives are to provide an overview of the various kinds of biopolymer hydrogels that are currently used for bone tissue and periodontal tissue regeneration, to list the advantages and disadvantages of using them, to assess how well they might be used for nanoscale fabrication and biofunctionalization, and to describe their production processes and processes for functionalization with active biomolecules. They are applied in conjunction with other materials (such as microparticles (MPs) and nanoparticles (NPs)) and other novel techniques to replicate physiological bone generation more faithfully. Enhancing the biocompatibility of hydrogels created from blends of natural and synthetic biopolymers can result in the creation of the best scaffold match to the extracellular matrix (ECM) for bone and periodontal tissue regeneration. Additionally, adding various nanoparticles can increase the scaffold hydrogel stability and provide a number of biological effects. In this review, the research study of polysaccharide hydrogel as a scaffold will be critical in creating valuable materials for effective bone tissue regeneration, with a future impact predicted in repairing bone defects.

Recent advances in carrageenan-based films for food packaging applications

In order to solve the increasingly serious environmental problems caused by plastic-based packaging, carrageenan-based films are drawing much attentions in food packaging applications, due to low cost, biodegradability, compatibility, and film-forming property. The purpose of this article is to present a comprehensive review of recent developments in carrageenan-based films, including fabrication strategies, physical and chemical properties and novel food packaging applications. Carrageenan can be extracted from red algae mainly by hydrolysis, ultrasonic-assisted and microwave-assisted extraction, and the combination of multiple extraction methods will be future trends in carrageenan extraction methods. Carrageenan can form homogeneous film-forming solutions and fabricate films mainly by direct coating, solvent casting and electrospinning, and mechanism of film formation was discussed in detail. Due to the inherent limitations of the pure carrageenan film, physical and chemical properties of carrageenan films were enhanced by incorporation with other compounds. Therefore, carrageenan-based films can be widely used for extending the shelf life of food and monitoring the food freshness by inhibiting microbial growth, reducing moisture loss and the respiration, etc. This article will provide useful guidelines for further research on carrageenan-based films.

Preparation of nanochitin hydrogel with adjustable inter-structure by sequencial genipin crosslinking and ice-templating under acid condition

In this work, genipin crosslinked chitin nanofibril hydrogels/cryogels were successfully prepared. Due to the acidic disperse nature of positively charged chitin fibrils, the pH nature for the chemical crosslinking between chitin nanofibrils and genipin was restricted under 5.0. The pH nature and crosslinking temperature were found greatly influence the efficient chemical crosslinking between chitin nanofibril and genipin. Further ice templated crosslinking was found effective enhancing the mechanical properties of resulting chitin nanofibril hydrogels/cryogels. The cryogel prepared by genipin-crosslinked DEChNs showed interconnected pores, presenting a state of stacking layers. In addition, the deposition of hydroxyapatite (HA) on the surface of chitin nanofibril scaffolds was found effective for improving chondrocyte attachments and growths. The cells viability indicated the good cell compatibility of the cryogel. All the results indicated that the cryogel prepared by genipin-crosslinked DEChNs showed a potential for tissue engineering applications.

Antibacterial activity of florfenicol composite nanogels against Staphylococcus aureus small colony variants

Background

Florfenicol might be ineffective for treating Staphylococcus aureus small colony variants (SCVs) mastitis.

Objectives

In this study, florfenicol-loaded chitosan (CS)-sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) composite nanogels were prepared to allow targeted delivery to SCV infected sites.

Methods

The formulation screening, the characteristics, in vitro release, antibacterial activity, therapeutic efficacy, and biosafety of the florfenicol composite nanogels were studied.

Results

The optimized formulation was obtained when the CS and TPP were 10 and 5 mg/mL, respectively. The encapsulation efficiency, loading capacity, size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential of the optimized florfenicol composite nanogels were 87.3% ± 2.7%, 5.8% ± 1.4%, 280.3 ± 1.5 nm, 0.15 ± 0.03, and 36.3 ± 1.4 mv, respectively. Optical and scanning electron microscopy showed that spherical particles with a relatively uniform distribution and drugs might be incorporated in cross-linked polymeric networks. The in vitro release study showed that the florfenicol composite nanogels exhibited a biphasic pattern with the sustained release of 72.2% ± 1.8% at 48 h in pH 5.5 phosphate-buffered saline. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of commercial florfenicol solution and florfenicol composite nanogels against SCVs were 1 and 0.25 µg/mL, respectively. The time-killing curves and live–dead bacterial staining showed that the florfenicol composite nanogels were concentration-dependent. Furthermore, the florfenicol composite nanogels displayed good therapeutic efficacy against SCVs mastitis. Biological safety studies showed that the florfenicol composite nanogels might be a biocompatible preparation because of their non-toxic effects on the renal tissue and liver.

Conclusions

Florfenicol composite nanogels might improve the treatment of SCV infections.

A Novel Potent Crystalline Chitin Decomposer: Chitin Deacetylase from Acinetobacter schindleri MCDA01

Chitosan is a functional ingredient that is widely used in food chemistry as an emulsifier, flocculant, antioxidant, or preservative. Chitin deacetylases (CDAs) can catalyze the hydrolysis of acetyl groups, making them useful in the clean production of chitosan. However, the high inactivity of crystalline chitin catalyzed by CDAs has been regarded as the technical bottleneck of crystalline chitin deacetylation. Here, we mined the AsCDA gene from the genome of Acinetobacter schindleri MCDA01 and identified a member of the uraD_N-term-dom superfamily, which was a novel chitin deacetylase with the highest deacetylation activity. The AsCDA gene was expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 by IPTG induction, whose activity to colloidal chitin, α-chitin, and β-chitin reached 478.96 U/mg, 397.07 U/mg, and 133.27 U/mg, respectively. In 12 h, the enzymatic hydrolysis of AsCDA removed 63.05% of the acetyl groups from α-chitin to prepare industrial chitosan with a degree of deacetylation higher than 85%. AsCDA, as a potent chitin decomposer in the production of chitosan, plays a positive role in the upgrading of the chitosan industry and the value-added utilization of chitin biological resources.

Immune enhancement of N-2-Hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan/carboxymethyl chitosan nanoparticles vaccine

The immunogenicity and toxicity of N-2-Hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan/N, O-carboxymethyl chitosan nanoparticles (N-2-HACC/CMCS NPs) as a universal vaccine adjuvant/delivery system remains unclear. The present study indicated that the positively charged N-2-HACC/CMCS NPs showed a regular spherical morphology, with a particle size of 219 ± 13.72 nm, zeta potential of 37.28 ± 4.58 mV, had hemocompatibility and biodegradation. Acute toxicity, repeated dose toxicity, abnormal toxicity, muscle stimulation, whole body allergic reaction evaluation in vitro, and cytotoxicity in vivo confirmed N-2-HACC/CMCS NPs is safe and non-toxic. N-2-HACC/OVA/CMCS NPs were prepared to evaluate the immunogenicity, which showed a particle size of 248.1 ± 15.53 nm, zeta potential of 17.24 ± 1.28 mV, encapsulation efficiency of 92.43 ± 0.96 %, and loading capacity of 42.97 ± 0.07 %. Oral or intramuscular route with the N-2-HACC/OVA/CMCS NPs in mice not only induced higher IgG, IgG1, IgG2a, and sIgA antibody titers, but also significantly produced higher levels of IL-6, IL-4, IFN-γ, and TNF-α, demonstrating that the N-2-HACC/OVA/CMCS NPs enhance humoral, cellular, and mucosal immune responses. Our results not only support the N-2-HACC/CMCS NPs to be a safe and potential universal nano adjuvant/delivery system in vaccine development, especially mucosal vaccines, but also rich the database knowledge of adjuvant/delivery systems, and provide new direction to introduce more licensed adjuvants.

Non-Viral Delivery of Gene Therapy to the Tendon

The tendon, as a compact connective tissue, is difficult to treat after an acute laceration or chronic degeneration. Gene-based therapy is a highly efficient strategy for diverse diseases which has been increasingly applied in tendons in recent years. As technology improves by leaps and bounds, a wide variety of non-viral vectors have been manufactured that attempt to have high biosecurity and transfection efficiency, considered to be a promising treatment modality. In this review, we examine the unwanted biological barriers, the categories of applicable genes, and the introduction and comparison of non-viral vectors. We focus on lipid-based nanoparticles and polymer-based nanoparticles, differentiating between them based on their combination with diverse chemical modifications and scaffolds.

Use of hyaluronic acid for regeneration of maxillofacial bones

Hyaluronic acid (HA) has been widely used in medicine and is currently of particular interest to maxillofacial surgeons. Several applications have been introduced, including those in which HA is used as a scaffold for bone regeneration, either alone or in combination with other grafting materials, to enhance bone growth. This review aims to analyze the available literature on the use of HA for maxillofacial bone regenerative procedures including socket preservation, sinus augmentation, and ridge augmentation. Medline and PubMed databases were searched for relevant reports published between January 2000 and April 2021. Nine publications describing the use of HA to augment bone volume were identified. Although further studies are needed, these findings are encouraging as they suggest that HA could be used effectively used, in combination with graft materials, in maxillofacial bone regenerative procedures. HA facilitates manipulation of bone grafts, improves handling characteristics and promotes osteoblast activity that stimulates bone regeneration and repair.

Assessment of the antioxidant, antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of essential oils for potential application of active chitosan films in food preservation

In the food industry, the development of microbial biofilms is a serious problem that leads to the contamination and deterioration of food products. To overcome that, our aim consists of searching for natural antimicrobial and non-toxic compounds (essential oils EOs), which might be used alone or adsorbed on natural biopolymer films (chitosan). In this work, the antioxidant activity of eight EOs was evaluated by DPPH radical-scavenging method while their antibacterial activity was determined by diffusion on agar and microdilution methods. Among all tested EOs, Eugenia caryophyllus, Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume and Thymus satureioides Cosson showed high antioxidant activities at the concentration of 25.6 mg/mL, with respective values of (86.26%, 81.75%, and 76%), and strong antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus hirae, with (MIC) values ≤ 4 µL/mL. At the concentration of 1 µL/mL, these EOs tested alone, showed values of antibiofilm-forming activity ranging from 79.43 to 99.33% and from 44.18 to 94.17%, when they are adsorbed onto chitosan film. These promising results confirm that these three EOs have a good potential for an eventual application in the food industry, as antimicrobial and antioxidant agents, or as active biodegradable food packaging, if combined with chitosan.

Usage of biological chitosan against the contamination of post-harvest treatment of strawberries by Aspergillus niger

Developing bioactive food packaging, capable of extending the shelf life of fruits, has received increasing attention in recent years. The present study highlights the interest in post-harvest treatment for strawberries with chitosan as a preservation solution. Chitosan extraction was carried out from shrimp shells (Parapenaeus longirostris), composed of chitin, using citric acid during the demineralization step. Extracted chitosan was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The presence of amino group (-NH2) in the obtained chitosan was confirmed by infrared (IR) spectral data. Deacetylation degree (DD), which has a value of 80.86%, was determined by FTIR spectra. X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) showed two peaks of crystalline character, characteristic of extracted chitosan, approximately at 20° and 30° (2θ). Extracted chitosan morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and showed a relatively smooth top surface and fibrous structures. Chitosan, acetic acid, and their interaction effects were evaluated on Aspergillus niger mycelial growth strain isolated from spoiled strawberries. Chitosan revealed a strong anti-fungal activity, dose-dependent (from 0 to 3%), on Aspergillus niger mycelial growth, while acetic acid showed moderate anti-fungal activity against the Aspergillus niger strain. Agri-food application was carried out using chitosan solubilized in acetic acid as a post-harvest treatment tool for the prolongation of shelf life of strawberries (by using an experimental design). Coating, with the developed preservative solution, significantly reduced microbial spoilage in strawberries. Treated strawberries retained their initial pigmentation for a longer period when compared to untreated strawberries. The treatment carried out maintained the cellular structures of treated strawberries during the storage period and thus extended the shelf life of strawberries which is considered very susceptible to reduce post-harvest losses.

Nanoparticles-based delivery system and its potentials in treating central nervous system disorders

Central nervous system (CNS) disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), have become severe health concern worldwide. The treatment of the CNS diseases is of great challenges due largely to the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). On the one hand, BBB protects brain from the harmful exogenous molecules via inhibiting their entry into the brain. On the other hand, it also hampers the transport of therapeutic drugs into the brain, resulting in the difficulties in treating the CNS diseases. In the past decades, nanoparticles-based drug delivery systems have shown great potentials in overcoming the BBB owing to their unique physicochemical properties, such as small size and specific morphology. In addition, functionalization of nanomaterials confers these nanocarriers controlled drug release features and targeting capacities. These properties make nanocarriers the potent delivery systems for treating the CNS disorders. Herein, we summarize the recent progress in nanoparticles-based systems for the CNS delivery, including the conventional and innovative systems. The prerequisites, drawbacks and challenges of nanocarriers (such as protein corona formation) in the CNS delivery are also discussed.

Pushing the Natural Frontier: Progress on the Integration of Biomaterial Cues toward Combinatorial Biofabrication and Tissue Engineering

The engineering of fully functional, biological-like tissues requires biomaterials to direct cellular events to a near-native, 3D niche extent. Natural biomaterials are generally seen as a safe option for cell support, but their biocompatibility and biodegradability can be just as limited as their bioactive/biomimetic performance. Furthermore, integrating different biomaterial cues and their final impact on cellular behavior is a complex equation where the outcome might be very different from the sum of individual parts. This review critically analyses recent progress on biomaterial-induced cellular responses, from simple adhesion to more complex stem cell differentiation, looking at the ever-growing possibilities of natural materials modification. Starting with a discussion on native material formulation and the inclusion of cell-instructive cues, the roles of shape and mechanical stimuli, the susceptibility to cellular remodeling, and the often-overlooked impact of cellular density and cell-cell interactions within constructs, are delved into. Along the way, synergistic and antagonistic combinations reported in vitro and in vivo are singled out, identifying needs and current lessons on the development of natural biomaterial libraries to solve the cell-material puzzle efficiently. This review brings together knowledge from different fields envisioning next-generation, combinatorial biomaterial development toward complex tissue engineering.

Self-adjuvanting cancer nanovaccines

Nanovaccines, a new generation of vaccines that use nanoparticles as carriers and/or adjuvants, have been widely used in the prevention and treatment of various diseases, including cancer. Nanovaccines have sparked considerable interest in cancer therapy due to a variety of advantages, including improved access to lymph nodes (LN), optimal packing and presentation of antigens, and induction of a persistent anti-tumor immune response. As a delivery system for cancer vaccines, various types of nanoparticles have been designed to facilitate the delivery of antigens and adjuvants to lymphoid organs and antigen-presenting cells (APCs). Particularly, some types of nanoparticles are able to confer an immune-enhancing capability and can themselves be utilized for adjuvant-like effect for vaccines, suggesting a direction for a better use of nanomaterials and the optimization of cancer vaccines. However, this role of nanoparticles in vaccines has not been well studied. To further elucidate the role of self-adjuvanting nanovaccines in cancer therapy, we review the mechanisms of antitumor vaccine adjuvants with respect to nanovaccines with self-adjuvanting properties, including enhancing cross-presentation, targeting signaling pathways, biomimicking of the natural invasion process of pathogens, and further unknown mechanisms. We surveyed self-adjuvanting cancer nanovaccines in clinical research and discussed their advantages and challenges. In this review, we classified self-adjuvanting cancer nanovaccines according to the underlying immunomodulatory mechanism, which may provide mechanistic insights into the design of nanovaccines in the future.

The applications of polysaccharides in dentistry

Polysaccharides are natural polymers widely present in animals, plants, and several microorganisms. Polysaccharides have remarkable properties, including easy extractions, degradability, and renewability, and have no apparent toxicity, making them ideal for biomedical applications. Moreover, polysaccharides are suitable for repairing oral tissue defects and treating oral diseases due to their excellent biocompatibility, biosafety, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. The oral cavity is a relatively complex environment vulnerable to numerous conditions, including soft tissue diseases, hard tissue disorders, and as well as soft and hard tissue diseases, all of which are complex to treat. In this article, we reviewed different structures of natural polysaccharides with high commercial values and their applications in treating various oral disease, such as drug delivery, tissue regeneration, material modification, and tissue repair.

Regiospecific Grafting of Chitosan Oligomers Brushes onto Silicon Wafers

The functionalization of surfaces using chitosan oligomers is of great interest for a wide range of applications in biomaterial and biomedical fields, as chitosan oligomers can provide various functional properties including biocompatibility, wetting, adhesion, and antibacterial activity. In this study, an innovative process for the regiospecific chemical grafting of reducing-end-modified chitosan oligomers brushes onto silicon wafers is described. Chitosan oligomers (COS) with well-defined structural parameters (average DP ~19 and DA ~0%) and bearing a 2,5-anhydro-d-mannofuranose (amf) unit at the reducing end were obtained via nitrous acid depolymerization of chitosan. After a silanization step where silicon wafers were modified with aromatic amine derivatives, grafting conditions were studied to optimize the reductive amination between aldehydes of amf-terminated COS and aromatic amines of silicon wafers. Functionalized surfaces were fully characterized by AFM, ATR-FTIR, ellipsometry, contact angle measurement, and ToF-SIMS techniques. Smooth surfaces were obtained with a COS layer about 3 nm thick and contact angle values between 72° and 76°. Furthermore, it was shown that the addition of the reducing agent NaBH₃CN could positively improve the COS grafting density and/or led to a better stability of the covalent grafting to hydrolysis. Finally, this study also showed that this grafting process is also efficient for chitosan oligomers of higher DA (i.e., ~21%).

Natural Biopolymers as Additional Tools for Cell Microencapsulation Applied to Cellular Therapy

One of the limitations in organ, tissue or cellular transplantations is graft rejection. To minimize or prevent this, recipients must make use of immunosuppressive drugs (IS) throughout their entire lives. However, its continuous use generally causes several side effects. Although some IS dose reductions and withdrawal strategies have been employed, many patients do not adapt to these protocols and must return to conventional IS use. Therefore, many studies have been carried out to offer treatments that may avoid IS administration in the long term. A promising strategy is cellular microencapsulation. The possibility of microencapsulating cells originates from the opportunity to use biomaterials that mimic the extracellular matrix. This matrix acts as a support for cell adhesion and the syntheses of new extracellular matrix self-components followed by cell growth and survival. Furthermore, by involving the cells in a polymeric matrix, the matrix acts as an immunoprotective barrier, protecting cells against the recipient’s immune system while still allowing essential cell survival molecules to diffuse bilaterally through the polymer matrix pores. In addition, this matrix can be associated with IS, thus diminishing systemic side effects. In this context, this review will address the natural biomaterials currently in use and their importance in cell therapy.

Current Researches on Nanodrug Delivery Systems in Bladder Cancer Intravesical Chemotherapy

Bladder cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in urinary system. Intravesical chemotherapy is a common adjuvant therapy after transurethral resection of bladder tumors. However, it has several disadvantages such as low drug penetration rate, short residence time, unsustainable action and inability to release slowly, thus new drug delivery and new modalities in delivery carriers need to be continuously explored. Nano-drug delivery system is a novel way in treatment for bladder cancer that can increase the absorption rate and prolong the duration of drug, as well as sustain the action by controlling drug release. Currently, nano-drug delivery carriers mainly included liposomes, polymers, and inorganic materials. In this paper, we reveal current researches in nano-drug delivery system in bladder cancer intravesical chemotherapy by describing the applications and defects of liposomes, polymers and inorganic material nanocarriers, and provide a basis for the improvement of intravesical chemotherapy drugs in bladder cancer.

Chitosan-based biomaterials for the treatment of bone disorders

Bone is an alive and dynamic organ that is well-differentiated and originated from mesenchymal tissues. Bone undergoes continuous remodeling during the lifetime of an individual. Although knowledge regarding bones and their disorders has been constantly growing, much attention has been devoted to effective treatments that can be used, both from materials and medical performance points of view. Polymers derived from natural sources, for example polysaccharides, are generally biocompatible and are therefore considered excellent candidates for various biomedical applications. This review outlines the development of chitosan-based biomaterials for the treatment of bone disorders including bone fracture, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, arthritis rheumatoid, and osteosarcoma. Different examples of chitosan-based formulations in the form of gels, micro/nanoparticles, and films are discussed herein. The work also reviews recent patents and important developments related to the use of chitosan in the treatment of bone disorders. Although most of the cited research was accomplished before reaching the clinical application level, this manuscript summarizes the latest achievements within chitosan-based biomaterials used for the treatment of bone disorders and provides perspectives for future scientific activities.

Application Progress of Modified Chitosan and Its Composite Biomaterials for Bone Tissue Engineering

In recent years, bone tissue engineering (BTE), as a multidisciplinary field, has shown considerable promise in replacing traditional treatment modalities (i.e., autografts, allografts, and xenografts). Since bone is such a complex and dynamic structure, the construction of bone tissue composite materials has become an attractive strategy to guide bone growth and regeneration. Chitosan and its derivatives have been promising vehicles for BTE owing to their unique physical and chemical properties. With intrinsic physicochemical characteristics and closeness to the extracellular matrix of bones, chitosan-based composite scaffolds have been proved to be a promising candidate for providing successful bone regeneration and defect repair capacity. Advances in chitosan-based scaffolds for BTE have produced efficient and efficacious bio-properties via material structural design and different modifications. Efforts have been put into the modification of chitosan to overcome its limitations, including insolubility in water, faster depolymerization in the body, and blood incompatibility. Herein, we discuss the various modification methods of chitosan that expand its fields of application, which would pave the way for future applied research in biomedical innovation and regenerative medicine.

Boosting physical-mechanical properties of adipic acid/chitosan films by DMTMM cross-linking

In this paper we present a novel strategy to easily prepare biodegradable chitosan derived films as new packaging systems. Combination of chitosan, adipic acid and 4-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-4-methyl-morpholinium chloride (DMTMM) allowed to obtain high-performing cross-linked films. Biobased glycerol was employed as plasticizer. An in-depth study was performed on ten different samples in order to evaluate the role of DMTMM as cross-linking agent. Experimental data showed that 15 wt% of DMTMM enhanced moisture content and moisture uptake (10.42% and 11.11%), water vapor permeability (0.13 10^-7 g m^-1 h^-1 Pa^-1) and good UV barrier properties. Additionally, 30 wt% of DMTMM significantly increased the tensile strength of films up to 83 MPa and elongation at break values reached 39.7%. Thermogravimetric, IR, XRD and SEM analysis confirmed that physical-mechanical properties of the obtained films were considerably improved, due to cross-linking by DMTMM, demonstrating promising properties for packaging applications.

Advances in Electrospun Hybrid Nanofibers for Biomedical Applications

Electrospun hybrid nanofibers, based on functional agents immobilized in polymeric matrix, possess a unique combination of collective properties. These are beneficial for a wide range of applications, which include theranostics, filtration, catalysis, and tissue engineering, among others. The combination of functional agents in a nanofiber matrix offer accessibility to multifunctional nanocompartments with significantly improved mechanical, electrical, and chemical properties, along with better biocompatibility and biodegradability. This review summarizes recent work performed for the fabrication, characterization, and optimization of different hybrid nanofibers containing varieties of functional agents, such as laser ablated inorganic nanoparticles (NPs), which include, for instance, gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and titanium nitride nanoparticles (TiNPs), perovskites, drugs, growth factors, and smart, inorganic polymers. Biocompatible and biodegradable polymers such as chitosan, cellulose, and polycaprolactone are very promising macromolecules as a nanofiber matrix for immobilizing such functional agents. The assimilation of such polymeric matrices with functional agents that possess wide varieties of characteristics require a modified approach towards electrospinning techniques such as coelectrospinning and template spinning. Additional focus within this review is devoted to the state of the art for the implementations of these approaches as viable options for the achievement of multifunctional hybrid nanofibers. Finally, recent advances and challenges, in particular, mass fabrication and prospects of hybrid nanofibers for tissue engineering and biomedical applications have been summarized.

Construction and Evaluation of Chitosan-Based Nanoparticles for Oral Administration of Exenatide in Type 2 Diabetic Rats

Oral delivery of therapeutic peptides has been a daunting challenge due to poor transport across the tight junctions and susceptibility to enzymatic degradation in the gastrointestinal tract. Numerous advancement in nanomedicine has been made for the effective delivery of protein and peptide. Owing to the superior performance of chitosan in opening intercellular tight junctions of epithelium and excellent mucoadhesive properties, chitosan-based nanocarriers have recently garnered considerable attention, which was formulated in this paper to orally deliver the GLP-1 drug (Exenatide). Against this backdrop, we used chitosan (CS) polymers to encapsulate the exenatide, sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) as the cross-linking agent and coated the exterior with sodium alginate (ALG) to impart the stability in an acidic environment. The chitosan/alginate nanoparticles (CS-TPP-ALG) functioned as a protective exenatide carrier, realized efficient cellular uptake and controlled release, leading to a steady hypoglycemic effect and a good oral bioavailability in vivo. Trimethyl chitosan (TMC), a chitosan derivative with stronger positive electrical properties was additionally selected as a substitute for chitosan to construct the TMC-TPP-ALG nanoparticle, and its oral peptide delivery capacity was explored in terms of both characterization and pharmacodynamics studies. Overall, our study demonstrated that functional chitosan/alginate nanoparticles can protect proteins from enzymatic degradation and enhance oral absorption, which presents important research value and application prospects.

A review on plant polysaccharide based on drug delivery system for construction and application, with emphasis on traditional Chinese medicine polysaccharide

Carbohydrate polymers with unique chemical composition, molecular weight and functional chemical groups show multiple potentials in drug delivery. Most carbohydrate polymers such as plant polysaccharides exhibit advantages of biodegradability, ease of modification, low immunogenicity and low toxicity. They can be conjugated, cross-linked or functionally modified, and then used as nanocarrier materials. Polysaccharide drug delivery system can avoid the phagocytosis of the reticuloendothelial system, prevent the degradation of biomolecules, and increase the bioavailability of small molecules, thus exerting effective therapeutic effects. Therefore, they have been fully explored. In this paper, we reviewed the construction methods of drug delivery systems based on carbohydrate polymers (astragalus polysaccharide, angelica polysaccharide, lycium barbarum polysaccharide, ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide, bletilla polysaccharide, glycyrrhiza polysaccharide, and epimedium polysaccharides, etc). The application of polysaccharide drug delivery systems to deliver small molecule chemotherapeutic drugs, gene drugs, and metal ion drugs was also briefly introduced. At the same time, the role of the polysaccharide drug delivery system in tumor treatment, targeted therapy, and wound healing was discussed. In addition, the research of polysaccharide delivery systems based on the therapeutic efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine was also summarized and prospected.

Molecular docking reveals Chitosan nanoparticle protection mechanism for dentin against Collagen-binding bacteria

The medical application of chitosan (Cs) has been for about half a century, but the molecular mechanism has not been elucidated yet. This study is to explore the antibacterial mechanism of chitosan nanoparticles (Csnp) in dentin at the atomic resolution level. Extracted tooth specimen was prepared in three groups: A. control group; B. Csnp treatment under ultrasonic agitation (UA); C. Csnp treatment without UA. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to observe the Csnp distribution on the dentin surface. The incubations of Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) were performed. Further, we explored the protection mechanism of chitosan polymers to collagen type I, using molecular docking technique and crystal structure superimposition analysis. We revealed that Csnp under UA was evenly distributed on the dental surface and the Csnp-pretreated dentin had great antibacterial activity for E. faecalis. Our work demonstrated that Csnp occupied the grooves of the triple-helical collagen surface, strengthened by crosslinking, and interfered with the bond of collagen adhesin through steric hindrance effect and interrupting hydrophobic interaction. Csnp protects dentin against E. faecalis by interacting and crosslinking with collagen type I and prevents bacterial collagen adhesin binding through steric hindrance effect and interrupting hydrophobic interaction. A Multifunctional Microspheric Soil Conditioner Based on Chitosan-Grafted Poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/Biochar

A multifunctional microspheric soil conditioner based on chitosan-grafted poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/biochar [CS-g-P(AM-co-AA)/BC] was prepared. First, the P(AM-co-AA) was synthesized and successfully grafted onto CS, and the three-dimensional network structure of microspheres was formed with N,N-methylenebis(acrylamide) as the cross-linking agent according to the inverse suspension polymerization method. Meanwhile, BC and urea were encapsulated into the body of microspheres during the polymerization. The structure of the microspheres was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, polarized optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, and the mechanism of adsorption of Cu²⁺ on the microspheres was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, the experimental results demonstrated the excellent water absorption and retention capabilities of microspheres, and the release rate of urea was dramatically reduced. Importantly, the introduction of BC significantly enhanced the adsorption performance of the microspheres with respect to heavy metal ions. Consequently, the multifunctional soil conditioner held promise for use in soil improvement and agricultural production.

Applications of Chitosan and its Derivatives in Skin and Soft Tissue Diseases

Chitosan and its derivatives are bioactive molecules that have recently been used in various fields, especially in the medical field. The antibacterial, antitumor, and immunomodulatory properties of chitosan have been extensively studied. Chitosan can be used as a drug-delivery carrier in the form of hydrogels, sponges, microspheres, nanoparticles, and thin films to treat diseases, especially those of the skin and soft tissue such as injuries and lesions of the skin, muscles, blood vessels, and nerves. Chitosan can prevent and also treat soft tissue diseases by exerting diverse biological effects such as antibacterial, antitumor, antioxidant, and tissue regeneration effects. Owing to its antitumor properties, chitosan can be used as a targeted therapy to treat soft tissue tumors. Moreover, owing to its antibacterial and antioxidant properties, chitosan can be used in the prevention and treatment of soft tissue infections. Chitosan can stop the bleeding of open wounds by promoting platelet agglutination. It can also promote the regeneration of soft tissues such as the skin, muscles, and nerves. Drug-delivery carriers containing chitosan can be used as wound dressings to promote wound healing. This review summarizes the structure and biological characteristics of chitosan and its derivatives. The recent breakthroughs and future trends of chitosan and its derivatives in therapeutic effects and drug delivery functions including anti-infection, promotion of wound healing, tissue regeneration and anticancer on soft tissue diseases are elaborated.

Preharvest multiple sprays with chitosan promotes the synthesis and deposition of lignin at wounds of harvested muskmelons

As an important elicitor, chitosan could activate the synthesis of lignin in many plants. However, no report is available on whether preharvest chitosan sprays affects the synthesis and deposition of lignin at wounds of harvested muskmelons. In the present study, the plants and fruit of muskmelons were multiple sprayed with 0.1% chitosan during fruit development. Here, we found that chitosan sprays increased the activities of 4-coumaric acid-coenzyme A ligase, cinnamyl-CoA reductase and cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase, and elevated the levels of p-coumaryl alcohol, coniferyl alcohol, sinapyl alcohol and lignin at wounds. Chitosan sprays enhanced H₂O₂ level and peroxidase activity, and accelerated the deposition of lignin at wounds. Moreover, chitosan sprays resulted in a higher hardness and lower resilience, springiness and cohesiveness of the healing tissues. Taken together, preharvest chitosan sprays accelerated the deposition of lignin at wounds of muskmelons by activating lignin metabolism, and increasing H₂O₂ content and peroxidase activity.

Experimental study of β-TCP scaffold loaded with VAN/PLGA microspheres in the treatment of infectious bone defects

Antibiotic bone cement filling technology has been widely used in the treatment of infectious bone defects for decades. However, the current treatment requires multiple complicated procedures, which would lead to pain and financial burden for patients. Repairing bone defects and control infection at the same time is the pain spot of orthopaedic area. In this study, we develop a composite scaffold that aiming at effectively repair infectious bone defects simultaneously. Vancomycin hydrochloride(Van) /Poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid(PLGA) microspheres prepared by double emulsion method were successfully loaded into β-tricalcium phosphate scaffold through electrostatic and physical crosslinking. Full characterization, including mechanical properties, biocompatibility, in vitro release profile and antibacterial properties of the composite scaffolds(CPSFs) were performed. The rabbit osteomyelitis model based on big hole and small hole methods was established. Pharmacodynamics study, including the local bacteriostatic and osteogenic ability were evaluated by X-ray, Micro-CT and histopathology at 4 months after surgery. These findings indicate that a reliable rabbit model of local bone defect infection successfully established by big hole approach. The CPSFs with significant histocompatibility and biocompatibility could sustained release vancomycin for extended duration. It exhibited great application potential in clinical aim at the indication of local infectious bone defects.

Implantable nerve guidance conduits: Material combinations, multi-functional strategies and advanced engineering innovations

Nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) have attracted much attention due to their great necessity and applicability in clinical use for the peripheral nerve repair. Great efforts in recent years have been devoted to the development of high-performance NGCs using various materials and strategies. The present review provides a comprehensive overview of progress in the material innovation, structural design, advanced engineering technologies and multi functionalization of state-of-the-art nerve guidance conduits NGCs. Abundant advanced engineering technologies including extrusion-based system, laser-based system, and novel textile forming techniques in terms of weaving, knitting, braiding, and electrospinning techniques were also analyzed in detail. Findings arising from this review indicate that the structural mimetic NGCs combined with natural and synthetic materials using advanced manufacturing technologies can make full use of their complementary advantages, acquiring better biomechanical properties, chemical stability and biocompatibility. Finally, the existing challenges and future opportunities of NGCs were put forward aiming for further research and applications of NGCs.

Evaluation of Antimicrobial and Anti-Biofilm Formation Activities of Novel Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogels Reinforced with Crosslinked Chitosan and Silver Nano-Particles

Novel hydrogels were prepared by blending chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol), PVA, then crosslinking the resulting blends using trimellitic anhydride isothiocyanate at a concentration based on chitosan content in the blends. The weight ratios of chitosan: PVA in the blends were 1:3, 1:1, and 3:1 to produce three hydrogels symbolized as H13, H11, and H31, respectively. For a comparison, H10 was also prepared by crosslinking pure chitosan with trimellitic anhydride isothiocyanate. For further modification, three H31/silver nanocomposites (AgNPs) were synthesized using three different concentrations of silver nitrate to obtain H31/AgNPs1%, H31/AgNPs3% and H31/AgNPs5%. The structures of the prepared samples were emphasized using various analytical techniques. PVA has no inhibition activity against the tested microbes and biofilms. The antimicrobial and anti-biofilm formation activities of the investigated samples was arranged as: H31/AgNPs5% ≥ H31/AgNPs3% > H31/AgNPs1% > H10 > H31 > H11 > H13 > chitosan. H31/AgNPs5% and H31/AgNPs3% were more potent than Vancomycin and Amphotericin B against most of the tested microbes. Interestingly, H31 and H31/AgNPs3% were safe on the normal human cells. Consequently, hydrogels resulting from crosslinked blends of chitosan and PVA loaded with AgNPs in the same structure have significantly reinforced the antimicrobial and inhibition activity against the biofilms of PVA.

Cytocompatibility / Antibacterial Activity Trade-off for Knittable Wet-Spun Chitosan Monofilaments Functionalized by the In Situ Incorporation of Cu2+ and Zn2

The wet spinning of cytocompatible, bioresorbable, and knittable chitosan (CTS) monofilaments would be advantageous for a variety of surgical applications. The complexation capacity of chitosan with Cu²⁺ or Zn²⁺ can be leveraged to enhance its antibacterial activity, but not at the expense of cytocompatibility. In this work, a wet-spinning process was adapted for the in situ incorporation of Cu²⁺ or Zn²⁺ with chitosan dopes to produce monofilaments at different drawing ratios (τ_tot) with various cation/glucosamine molar ratios, evaluated in the fibers (r_Cu,f and r_Zn,f). Cytocompatibility and antibacterial activity of wet-spun monofilaments were, respectively, quantified by in vitro live-dead assays on balb 3T3 and by different evaluations of the proliferation inhibition of Staphylococcus epidermidis (Gram+) and Escherichia coli (Gram-). Knittability was tested by a specific tensile test using a knitting needle and evaluated with an industrial knitting machine. It was found that r_Cu,f = 0.01 and r_Zn,f = 0.03 significantly increase the antibacterial activity without compromising cytocompatibility. Wet spinning with τ_tot = 1.6 allowed the production of knittable CTS-Cu monofilaments, as confirmed by knitting assays under industrial conditions.

Chitosan-based double cross-linked ionic hydrogels as a strain and pressure sensor with broad strain-range and high sensitivity

A conductive hydrogel P(AAm-co-AA)/CS-Fe³⁺ with double cross-linked networks was fabricated using a one-step polymerization by UV irradiation and a soaking process in Fe(NO₃)₃ solution. In this hydrogel, the rigid chain of chitosan (CS) and the soft chain of copolymer P(AAm-co-AA) with acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AAm) act as the backbone, among which large amounts of hydrogen bonds are formed by the amino, hydroxyl, and carboxyl groups on the two polymers. Ferric irons (Fe³⁺) are introduced and form coordination interactions with carboxyl and amino groups of the polymers. The double cross-linked interactions in the system can enhance the tensile strength and toughness of the hydrogel. Thus, the prepared P(AAm-co-AA)/CS-Fe³⁺ hybrid network hydrogel shows excellent mechanical properties in many aspects: a strength of up to 550 kPa, a broad strain-range up to 800%, fast self-recovery ability (30 min), and low hysteresis strain (<100%). The conductive hydrogel demonstrates high strain sensitivity (gauge factor (GF) = 6.6 at a strain of 700%) as a flexible sensor. Human movements (for example, finger bending, vocal cord vibration, and other human activities) can be sensitively detected using the P(AAm-co-AA)/CS-Fe³⁺ hydrogel sensor.

Nanoplastics and Human Health: Hazard Identification and Biointerface

Nanoplastics are associated with several risks to the ecology and toxicity to humans. Nanoplastics are synthetic polymers with dimensions ranging from 1 nm to 1 μm. They are directly released to the environment or secondarily derived from plastic disintegration in the environment. Nanoplastics are widely detected in environmental samples and the food chain; therefore, their potentially toxic effects have been widely explored. In the present review, an overview of another two potential sources of nanoplastics, exposure routes to illustrate hazard identification of nanoplastics, cell internalization, and effects on intracellular target organelles are presented. In addition, challenges on the study of nanoplastics and future research areas are summarized. This paper also summarizes some approaches to eliminate or minimize the levels of nanoplastics to ensure environmental safety and improve human health.

Study on the Incorporation of Chitosan Flakes in Electrospun Polycaprolactone Scaffolds

Hybrid scaffolds obtained by combining two or more biopolymers are studied in the context of tissue regeneration due to the possibility of achieving new functional properties or structural features. The aim of this work was to produce a new type of hybrid polycaprolactone (PCL)/chitosan (CS) electrospun mat through the controlled deposition of CS flakes interspaced between the PCL fibers. A poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) solution was used to transport CS flakes with controlled size. This, and the PCL solution, were simultaneously electrospun onto a rotatory mandrel in a perpendicular setup. Different PCL/CS mass ratios were also studied. The morphology of the resulting fibers, evaluated by SEM, confirmed the presence of the CS flakes between the PCL fibers. The addition of PEO/CS fibers resulted in hydrophilic mats with lower Young’s modulus relatively to PCL mats. In vitro cell culture results indicated that the addition of CS lowers both the adhesion and the proliferation of human dermal fibroblasts. The present work demonstrates the feasibility of achieving a controlled deposition of a polymeric component in granular form onto a collector where electrospun nanofibers are being deposited, thereby producing a hybrid scaffold.

Development of Silver-Containing Hydroxyapatite-Coated Antimicrobial Implants for Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgery

The prevention of surgical site infections is directly related to the minimization of surgical invasiveness, and is in line with the concept of minimally invasive spine therapy (MIST). In recent years, the incidence of postoperative infections has been increasing due to the increased use of spinal implant surgery in patients at high risk of infection, including the elderly and easily infected hosts, the limitations of poor bone marrow transfer of antibiotics, and the potential for contamination of surgical gloves and instruments. Thus, the development of antimicrobial implants in orthopedic and spinal surgery is becoming more and more popular, and implants with proven antimicrobial, safety, and osteoconductive properties (i.e., silver, iodine, antibiotics) in vitro, in vivo, and in clinical trials have become available for clinical use. We have developed silver-containing hydroxyapatite (Ag-HA)-coated implants to prevent post-operative infection, and increase bone fusion capacity, and have successfully commercialized antibacterial implants for hip prostheses and spinal interbody cages. This narrative review overviews the present status of available surface coating technologies and materials; describes how the antimicrobial, safety, and biocompatibility (osteoconductivity) of Ag-HA-coated implants have been demonstrated for commercialization; and reviews the clinical use of antimicrobial implants in orthopedic and spinal surgery, including Ag-HA-coated implants that we have developed.

Chitosan as a Tool for Sustainable Development: A Mini Review

New developments require innovative ecofriendly materials defined by their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and versatility. For that reason, the scientific society is focused on biopolymers such as chitosan, which is the second most abundant in the world after cellulose. These new materials should show good properties in terms of sustainability, circularity, and energy consumption during industrial applications. The idea is to replace traditional raw materials with new ecofriendly materials which contribute to keeping a high production rate but also reducing its environmental impact and the costs. The chitosan shows interesting and unique properties, thus it can be used for different purposes which contributes to the design and development of sustainable novel materials. This helps in promoting sustainability through the use of chitosan and diverse materials based on it. For example, it is a good sustainable alternative for food packaging or it can be used for sustainable agriculture. The chitosan can also reduce the pollution of other industrial processes such as paper production. This mini review collects some of the most important advances for the sustainable use of chitosan for promoting circular economy. Hence, the present review focuses on different aspects of chitosan from its synthesis to multiple applications.

The synthesis of bacterial cellulose-chitosan zwitterionic hydrogels with pH responsiveness for drug release mechanism of the naproxen

The human digestive and absorption system has a specific pH environment, which makes it difficult to for accurate drug-release. Zwitterionic hydrogel, as a kind of drug carrier, is a feasible response strategy. In this work, a facile method was employed to prepare a series zwitterionic hydrogels composed of BC and chitosan. The composite gels could in-situ formed via Schiff's base reaction between partially oxidated bacterial cellulose and chitosan which exhibited relatively well mechanical properties. Besides, the rich amino and carboxyl groups endowed the hydrogels with excellent pH responsive performance. The minimum swelling rate of the hydrogels appeared at pH 3.5-pH 5.0. In lower or higher pH solutions, the swelling rate was greatly increased. The drug (naproxen) loading of the hydrogels was above 110 mg/g. The release amount of naproxen in the simulated gastric juice was less than intestinal fluid with the sustained release time exceeded 24 h. Through kinetic simulation analysis, the drug release behavior is in accordance with zero-order release model. Such kind of composite hydrogel is suggested to be a potential drug carrier for clinical therapy.

Application of chitosan nanoparticles in skin wound healing

The rising prevalence of impaired wound healing and the consequential healthcare burdens have gained increased attention over recent years. This has prompted research into the development of novel wound dressings with augmented wound healing functions. Nanoparticle (NP)-based delivery systems have become attractive candidates in constructing such wound dressings due to their various favourable attributes. The non-toxicity, biocompatibility and bioactivity of chitosan (CS)-based NPs make them ideal candidates for wound applications. This review focusses on the application of CS-based NP systems for use in wound treatment. An overview of the wound healing process was presented, followed by discussion on the properties and suitability of CS and its NPs in wound healing. The wound healing mechanisms exerted by CS-based NPs were then critically analysed and discussed in sections, namely haemostasis, infection prevention, inflammatory response, oxidative stress, angiogenesis, collagen deposition, and wound closure time. The results of the studies were thoroughly reviewed, and contradicting findings were identified and discussed. Based on the literature, the gap in research and future prospects in this research area were identified and highlighted. Current evidence shows that CS-based NPs possess superior wound healing effects either used on their own, or as drug delivery vehicles to encapsulate wound healing agents. It is concluded that great opportunities and potentials exist surrounding the use of CSNPs in wound healing.

Contributions of Women in Recent Research on Biopolymer Science

Nowadays, biopolymers are playing a fundamental role in our society because of the environmental issues and concerns associated with synthetic polymers. The aim of this Special Issue entitled ‘Women in Polymer Science and Technology: Biopolymers’ is highlighting the work designed and developed by women on biopolymer science and technology. In this context, this short review aims to provide an introduction to this Special Issue by highlighting some recent contributions of women around the world on the particular topic of biopolymer science and technology during the last 20 years. In the first place, it highlights a selection of important works performed on a number of well-studied natural polymers, namely, agar, chitin, chitosan, cellulose, and collagen. Secondly, it gives an insight into the discovery of new polysaccharides and enzymes that have a role in their synthesis and in their degradation. These contributions will be paving the way for the next generation of female and male scientists on this topic.
