Mesoscale Organization of CuO Nanoribbons: Formation of “Dandelions”

A controllable transformation in copper valence states and its applications

The present study revealed a surprising valence transformation of copper (Cu) in the sintering process of mixtures of copper chloride dihydrate (CuCl(2)·2H(2)O) with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) in ambient atmosphere. Such a transformation in Cu valence states can be modulated by changing the initial molar ratio (IMR) of CuCl(2)·2H(2)O to β-CD in the mixtures. Firstly, as the value of IMR decreased, the content of cuprous chloride (CuCl) decreased, while the content of cupric oxide (CuO) increased gradually. That is to say, there is an unambiguous IMR-dependence of the contents of CuCl and CuO formed. However, such a controllable valence transformation from Cu(II) to Cu(I) to Cu(II) did not happen in nitrogen atmosphere. Secondly, the in situ composite of CuCl and CuO produced a highly ordered structure of self-assembled nanowires, intertwined, with a diameter of 30 to 50 nm. Furthermore, electronic structural analysis provided direct evidence that the Cu-Cl and Cu-O bonds in this composite material were simultaneously impaired by self-assembled growth. Finally, we noticed that the photoluminescence property of CuCl was regulated through the formation of composites with CuO. In addition, this in situ composite synthesis technique was used to modify the magnetic property of CuO. Furthermore, the anomalous ferromagnetic behaviour of the CuO nanocrystal was observed and explained. In short, this work not only demonstrates a flexible and easily controllable valence transformation of Cu, but also provides a novel approach for constructing inorganic nanocomposite materials. We believe that the implications of these findings are important and make significant contributions to the development of inorganic chemistry and material science.

One-pot sonochemical fabrication of hierarchical hollow CuO submicrospheres

Hierarchical hollow CuO submicrospheres have been fabricated on a large scale by a facile one-pot sonochemical process in the absence of surfactants and additives. The as-prepared products were investigated by XRD, FESEM, EDX, TEM, SAED, HRTEM and BET nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. The results reveal that hollow pumpkin-shaped structures possess a monoclinic phase CuO with the diameters ranging from 400 to 500 nm, and their walls with around 45 nm in thickness are composed of numerous single crystalline CuO nanoribbons with a width of about 8 nm. The BET specific surface area of the as-synthesized CuO hollow structures was measured to be 59.60 m(2)/g, and the single point adsorption total pore volume was measured to be 0.1036 cm(3)/g. A possible growth mechanism for the formation of hierarchical hollow CuO structures was proposed, which is considered to be a sonohydrolysis - oriented aggregation - Ostwald ripening process. The novel hollow CuO spherical structures may utilize applications in biosensors, photonics, electronics, and catalysts.

Preparation and Characterization of Copper Oxide and Copper Nanoparticles

Copper oxide was prepared via the calcination of copper oxalate precursor. By using high-temperature solvent method, the precursor decomposed under nitrogen atmosphere and copper nanoparticles were obtained. The microstructure and properties of the products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and other analysis methods. The results show that the obtained copper oxide is constructed by nanoparticles. The sample is porous and has a good catalytic activity. Three copper samples were obtained by controlling the reaction time. The particle size of the samples was calculated to be about 44.3 nm, 17.1 nm and 9.9 nm respectively.

Large-scale synthesis of hierarchical flowerlike boehmite architectures

Three-dimensional flowerlike boehmite architectures were synthesized on a large scale via a surfactant-assisted hydrothermal method. The XRD pattern showed that the AlOOH was fully crystallized and exhibited an orthorhombic phase. SEM and TEM images indicated that the flowerlike AlOOH architectures, consisting of nanosheets of 50 nm in thickness, were 550-800 nm in diameters and 1 μm in lengths. SAED pattern revealed that the flowerlike AlOOH was polycrystalline. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurement indicated that hierarchical AlOOH architectures had Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of about 70.1 m(2)/g. The effects of reaction times and the surfactant on the morphologies were also investigated. It was found that CTAB played a crucial role. The formation mechanism of the flowerlike AlOOH architectures was proposed and discussed based on the experimental results.

Low-temperature synthesis of CuO-interlaced nanodiscs for lithium ion battery electrodes

In this study, we report the high-yield synthesis of 2-dimensional cupric oxide (CuO) nanodiscs through dehydrogenation of 1-dimensional Cu(OH)2 nanowires at 60°C. Most of the nanodiscs had a diameter of approximately 500 nm and a thickness of approximately 50 nm. After further prolonged reaction times, secondary irregular nanodiscs gradually grew vertically into regular nanodiscs. These CuO nanostructures were characterized using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements. The possible growth mechanism of the interlaced disc CuO nanostructures is systematically discussed. The electrochemical performances of the CuO nanodisc electrodes were evaluated in detail using cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic cycling. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the incorporation of multiwalled carbon nanotubes enables the enhanced reversible capacities and capacity retention of CuO nanodisc electrodes on cycling by offering more efficient electron transport paths.

Controllable synthesis of periodic flower-like ZnO nanostructures on Si subwavelength grating structures

We report on the periodic well-defined flower-like zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures (NSs) self-assembled through a simple hydrothermal method using silicon (Si) subwavelength grating (SWG) structures. The Si SWGs serve as building blocks for constructing a two-dimensional (2D) periodic architecture to integrate the one-dimensional (1D) ZnO NSs. Various controlled morphologies of ZnO NSs with high crystallinity are obtained by changing the growth conditions. For 1D ZnO NSs integrated on periodic hexagonal Si SWG structures, the reflection characteristics are investigated in comparison with the conventional ZnO nanorod (NR) arrays. For a three-dimensional (3D) flower-like ZnO NS on Si SWGs, a relatively low total reflectance of < 8% at wavelengths of 300-1050 nm is achieved compared to the ZnO NRs on Si substrate.

Growth of dandelion-shaped CuInSe2 nanostructures by a two-step solvothermal process

CuInSe(2) (CIS) nanodandelion structures were synthesized by a two-step solvothermal approach. First, InSe nanodandelions were prepared by reacting In(acac)(3) with trioctylphosphine-selenide (TOP-Se) in 1-octadecene (ODE) at 170 °C in the presence of oleic acid. These InSe dandelions were composed of polycrystalline nanosheets with thickness < 10 nm. The size of the InSe dandelions could be tuned within the range of 300 nm-2 µm by adjusting the amount of oleic acid added during the synthesis. The InSe dandelion structures were then reacted with Cu(acac)(2) in the second-step solvothermal process in ODE to form CIS nanodandelions. The band gap of the CIS dandelions was determined from ultraviolet (UV) absorption measurements to be ∼ 1.36 eV, and this value did not show any obvious change upon varying the size of the CIS dandelions. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements showed that the specific surface area of these CIS dandelion structures was 44.80 m(2) g(-1), which was more than five times higher than that of the CIS quantum dots (e.g. 8.22 m(2) g(-1)) prepared by using reported protocols. A fast photoresponsive behavior was demonstrated in a photoswitching device using the 200 nm CIS dandelions as the active materials, which suggested their possible application in optoelectronic devices.

CuO nanostructures supported on Cu substrate as integrated electrodes for highly reversible lithium storage

Arrays of CuO nanostructures, including nanorods and nanosheets, supported on a Cu substrate have been rationally fabricated from their morphology-controlled Cu(2)(OH)(3)NO(3) precursors by thermal annealing. The as-prepared CuO samples can be directly used as integrated electrodes for lithium-ion batteries without the addition of other ancillary materials such as carbon black or a binder to enhance electrode conductivity and cycling stability. The unique nanostructural features endower them excellent electrochemical performance as demonstrated by high capacities of 450-650 mAh g(-1) at 0.5-2 C and almost 100% capacity retention over 100 cycles after the second cycle.

Room temperature synthesis of 2D CuO nanoleaves in aqueous solution

A simple room temperature method was reported for the synthesis of CuO nanocrystals in aqueous solution through the sequence of Cu(2+) → Cu(OA)2 → Cu(OH)2 → Cu(OH)(2-)4 → CuO. Sodium oleate (SOA) was used as the surfactant and shape controller. The as-prepared samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-vis) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). It can be seen that 1D Cu(OH)(2) nanowires were first obtained from Cu(OA)(2) and, at room temperature, converted into 2D CuO nanoleaves (CuO NLs) in a short time under a weakly basic environment. On prolonging the reaction time, the top part of these 2D nanoleaves branched and separated along the long axis to form 1D rod-like nano-CuO because of the assistance of SOA. A possible transformation mechanism of Cu(OH)(2) to CuO nanostructures at room temperature in aqueous solution is discussed. The transformation velocity can be controlled by changing the pH value of the system. The prepared CuO NLs were used to construct an enzyme-free glucose sensor. The detecting results showed that the designed sensor exhibited good amperometric responses towards glucose with good anti-interferent ability.

Expeditious synthesis and assembly of sub-100 nm hollow spherical gold nanoparticle superstructures

Sub-100 nm hollow gold nanoparticle superstructures were prepared in a direct one-pot reaction. A gold-binding peptide conjugate, C(6)-AA-PEP(Au) (PEP(Au) = AYSSGAPPMPPF), was constructed and used to direct the simultaneous synthesis and assembly of gold nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy and electron tomography revealed that the superstructures are uniform and consist of monodisperse gold nanoparticles arranged into a spherical monolayer shell.

Bioinspired synthesis of calcium carbonate hollow spheres with a nacre-type laminated microstructure

In this Article, we combine the characters of hyperbranched polymers and the concept of double-hydrophilic block copolymer (DHBC) to design a 3D crystal growth modifier, HPG-COOH. The novel modifier can efficiently control the crystallization of CaCO(3) from amorphous nanoparticles to vaterite hollow spheres by a nonclassical crystallization process. The obtained vaterite hollow spheres have a special puffy dandelion-like appearance; that is, the shell of the hollow spheres is constructed by platelet-like vaterite mesocrystals, perpendicular to the globe surface. The cross-section of the wall of a vaterite hollow sphere is similar to that of nacres in microstructure, in which platelet-like calcium carbonate mesocrystals pile up with one another. These results reveal the topology effect of the crystal growth modifier on biomineralization and the essential role of the nonclassical crystallization for constructing hierarchical microstructures.
