Corticocortical connections of anatomically and physiologically defined subdivisions within the inferior parietal lobule

Temporal representation in the control of movement

Theories of the representation of specific kinetic and spatiotem-poral features of movement range from the explicit assertion that temporal aspects of movement are not represented (Kugler et al. 1980) to the idea that they are represented and that they have neurophysiological correlates (Ivry & Corcos 1993; Ivry & Keele 1989). Jeannerod's thesis is that mental and visual images have common mechanisms and that there is a link between the image to move and the mechanisms involved with movement. The target article takes the position that certain parameters are coded in motor representations (sect. 4) but that the duration of an action is not one of them. This position is based on the work of Gottlieb et al. (1989b) and of Decety et al. (1989). Both these studies are worth considering in detail. In Note 1, Jeannerod suggests that: “in time-constrained tasks subjects control the amplitude parameter of force impulses, whereas in spatially constrained tasks the duration of the force impulse is affected by accuracy demands.” This is not exactly correct. Excitation pulse intensity (amplitude) is modulated both in tasks that require spatial and those that require temporal accuracy. Excitation pulse duration is modulated for changes in movement distance and inertial load. If subjects are required to be very accurate spatially, they will move at less than maximum speed for a given distance and this is achieved by lower levels of excitation intensity (Gottlieb et al. 1990).

On the relation between motor imagery and visual imagery

Jeannerod's target article describes support, through empirical and neurological findings, for the intriguing idea of motor imagery, a form of representation hypothesized to have levels of functional equivalence with motor preparation, while being consciously accessible. Jeannerod suggests that the subjectively accessible content of motor imagery allows it to be distinguished from motor preparation, which is unconscious. Motor imagery is distinguished from visual imagery in terms of content. Motor images are kinesthetic in nature; they are parametrized by variables such as force and time and they are potentially governed by kinematic rules. Jeannerod acknowledges, however, that motor and visual imagery may not easily be separated, because actions take place in a spatial environment. I agree; in fact, I suggest here that visualization may generally be concomitant with, and may even subjectively dominate, motor imagery.

The representing brain: Neural correlates of motor intention and imagery

This paper concerns how motor actions are neurally represented and coded. Action planning and motor preparation can be studied using a specific type of representational activity, motor imagery. A close functional equivalence between motor imagery and motor preparation is suggested by the positive effects of imagining movements on motor learning, the similarity between the neural structures involved, and the similar physiological correlates observed in both imaging and preparing. The content of motor representations can be inferred from motor images at a macroscopic level, based on global aspects of the action (the duration and amount of effort involved) and the motor rules and constraints which predict the spatial path and kinematics of movements. A more microscopic neural account calls for a representation of object-oriented action. Object attributes are processed in different neural pathways depending on the kind of task the subject is performing. During object-oriented action, a pragmatic representation is activated in which object affordances are transformed into specific motor schemas (independently of other tasks such as object recognition). Animal as well as human clinical data implicate the posterior parietal and premotor cortical areas in schema instantiation. A mechanism is proposed that is able to encode the desired goal of the action and is applicable to different levels of representational organization.

Organization of the posterior parietal cortex in galagos: II. Ipsilateral cortical connections of physiologically identified zones within anterior sensorimotor region

We studied cortical connections of functionally distinct movement zones of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in galagos identified by intracortical microstimulation with long stimulus trains ( approximately 500 msec). All these zones were in the anterior half of PPC, and each of them had a different pattern of connections with premotor (PM) and motor (M1) areas of the frontal lobe and with other areas of parietal and occipital cortex. The most rostral PPC zone has major connections with motor and visuomotor areas of frontal cortex as well as with somatosensory areas 3a and 1-2 and higher order somatosensory areas in the lateral sulcus. The dorsal part of anterior PPC region representing hand-to-mouth movements is connected mostly to the forelimb representation in PM, M1, 3a, 1-2, and somatosensory areas in the lateral sulcus and on the medial wall. The more posterior defensive and reaching zones have additional connections with nonprimary visual areas (V2, V3, DL, DM, MST). Ventral aggressive and defensive face zones have reciprocal connections with each other as well as connections with mostly face, but also forelimb representations of premotor areas and M1 as well as prefrontal cortex, FEF, and somatosensory areas in the lateral sulcus and areas on the medial surface of the hemisphere. Whereas the defensive face zone is additionally connected to nonprimary visual cortical areas, the aggressive face zone is not. These differences in connections are consistent with our functional parcellation of PPC based on intracortical long-train microstimulation, and they identify parts of cortical networks that mediate different motor behaviors.

Atypical activation of the mirror neuron system during perception of hand motion in autism

Disorders in the autism spectrum are characterized by deficits in social and communication skills such as imitation, pragmatic language, theory of mind, and empathy. The discovery of the "mirror neuron system" (MNS) in macaque monkeys may provide a basis from which to explain some of the behavioral dysfunctions seen in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).We studied seven right-handed high-functioning male autistic and eight normal subjects (TD group) using functional magnetic resonance imaging during observation and execution of hand movements compared to a control condition (rest). The between group comparison of the contrast [observation versus rest] provided evidence of a bilateral greater activation of inferior frontal gyrus during observation of human motion than during rest for the ASD group than for the TD group. This hyperactivation of the pars opercularis (belonging to the MNS) during observation of human motion in autistic subjects provides strong support for the hypothesis of atypical activity of the MNS that may be at the core of the social deficits in autism.

Functional and histological properties of caudal intraparietal area of macaque monkey

In our previous studies, we found that cells in the caudal intraparietal (CIP) area of the macaque monkey selectively responded to three-dimensional (3D) features, such as the axis and surface orientations, and we suggested that this area played a crucial role in 3D vision. In this study, we investigated (1) whether cells in CIP respond to other 3D features, such as curvature, and (2) whether CIP has any histological property to distinguish it from neighboring areas. Curvatures defined by a random-dot stereogram were presented on a display while the monkey performed a fixation task. The shape and amount of curvature were manipulated by two independent variables, shape index and curvedness, respectively. Two-way ANOVA showed that 19 out of 56 visually responsive cells (34.0%) showed the main effect of shape index. We tentatively designated these cells as 3D curvature-selective (3DCS). Of these, six 3DCS cells showed the main effects of shape index and curvedness, whereas 13 showed the main effect of shape index only. In both types of 3DCS cells, preferred shape indices calculated from tuning curves at two levels of curvedness matched well. These results indicate that the majority of 3DCS cells responded equally to a particular shape of curvatures with different curvedness levels. An immunohistochemical study showed that the recording sites of 3DCS cells were in a cortical region characterized by a dense SMI-32 immunoreactivity in the caudal portion of the lateral intraparietal sulcus (IPS), which suggests that this region is comparable to the lateral occipital parietal (LOP) designated in the caudal IPS previously. Further investigations showed that this region was separated from LIPv, the ventral subdivision of lateral intraparietal (LIP) located rostral to CIP/LOP. These results suggest that CIP is a cortical area distinct from LIP histologically as well as functionally.

Where is the semantic system? A critical review and meta-analysis of 120 functional neuroimaging studies

Semantic memory refers to knowledge about people, objects, actions, relations, self, and culture acquired through experience. The neural systems that store and retrieve this information have been studied for many years, but a consensus regarding their identity has not been reached. Using strict inclusion criteria, we analyzed 120 functional neuroimaging studies focusing on semantic processing. Reliable areas of activation in these studies were identified using the activation likelihood estimate (ALE) technique. These activations formed a distinct, left-lateralized network comprised of 7 regions: posterior inferior parietal lobe, middle temporal gyrus, fusiform and parahippocampal gyri, dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, inferior frontal gyrus, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, and posterior cingulate gyrus. Secondary analyses showed specific subregions of this network associated with knowledge of actions, manipulable artifacts, abstract concepts, and concrete concepts. The cortical regions involved in semantic processing can be grouped into 3 broad categories: posterior multimodal and heteromodal association cortex, heteromodal prefrontal cortex, and medial limbic regions. The expansion of these regions in the human relative to the nonhuman primate brain may explain uniquely human capacities to use language productively, plan, solve problems, and create cultural and technological artifacts, all of which depend on the fluid and efficient retrieval and manipulation of semantic knowledge.

Influence of saccade efference copy on the spatiotemporal properties of remapping: a neural network study

Remapping of gaze-centered target-position signals across saccades has been observed in the superior colliculus and several cortical areas. It is generally assumed that this remapping is driven by saccade-related signals. What is not known is how the different potential forms of this signal (i.e., visual, visuomotor, or motor) might influence this remapping. We trained a three-layer recurrent neural network to update target position (represented as a "hill" of activity in a gaze-centered topographic map) across saccades, using discrete time steps and backpropagation-through-time algorithm. Updating was driven by an efference copy of one of three saccade-related signals: a transient visual response to the saccade-target in two-dimensional (2-D) topographic coordinates (Vtop), a temporally extended motor burst in 2-D topographic coordinates (Mtop), or a 3-D eye velocity signal in brain stem coordinates (EV). The Vtop model produced presaccadic remapping in the output layer, with a "jumping hill" of activity and intrasaccadic suppression. The Mtop model also produced presaccadic remapping with a dispersed moving hill of activity that closely reproduced the quantitative results of Sommer and Wurtz. The EV model produced a coherent moving hill of activity but failed to produce presaccadic remapping. When eye velocity and a topographic (Vtop or Mtop) updater signal were used together, the remapping relied primarily on the topographic signal. An analysis of the hidden layer activity revealed that the transient remapping was highly dispersed across hidden-layer units in both Vtop and Mtop models but tightly clustered in the EV model. These results show that the nature of the updater signal influences both the mechanism and final dynamics of remapping. Taken together with the currently known physiology, our simulations suggest that different brain areas might rely on different signals and mechanisms for updating that should be further distinguishable through currently available single- and multiunit recording paradigms.

Intention, action planning, and decision making in parietal-frontal circuits

The posterior parietal cortex and frontal cortical areas to which it connects are responsible for sensorimotor transformations. This review covers new research on four components of this transformation process: planning, decision making, forward state estimation, and relative-coordinate representations. These sensorimotor functions can be harnessed for neural prosthetic operations by decoding intended goals (planning) and trajectories (forward state estimation) of movements as well as higher cortical functions related to decision making and potentially the coordination of multiple body parts (relative-coordinate representations).

Been there, seen that: a neural mechanism for performing efficient visual search

In everyday life, we efficiently find objects in the world by moving our gaze from one location to another. The efficiency of this process is brought about by ignoring items that are dissimilar to the target and remembering which target-like items have already been examined. We trained two animals on a visual foraging task in which they had to find a reward-loaded target among five task-irrelevant distractors and five potential targets. We found that both animals performed the task efficiently, ignoring the distractors and rarely examining a particular target twice. We recorded the single unit activity of 54 neurons in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) while the animals performed the task. The responses of the neurons differentiated between targets and distractors throughout the trial. Further, the responses marked off targets that had been fixated by a reduction in activity. This reduction acted like inhibition of return in saliency map models; items that had been fixated would no longer be represented by high enough activity to draw an eye movement. This reduction could also be seen as a correlate of reward expectancy; after a target had been identified as not containing the reward the activity was reduced. Within a trial, responses to the remaining targets did not increase as they became more likely to yield a result, suggesting that only activity related to an event is updated on a moment-by-moment bases. Together, our data show that all the neural activity required to guide efficient search is present in LIP. Because LIP activity is known to correlate with saccade goal selection, we propose that LIP plays a significant role in the guidance of efficient visual search.

Towards a neurocircuitry in anorexia nervosa: evidence from functional neuroimaging studies

Functional neuroimaging is widely used to unravel changes in brain functioning in psychiatric disorders. In the current study, we review single-photon emission tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies in anorexia nervosa (AN), a difficult-to-treat eating disorder with the highest mortality rate among psychiatric disorders. We discuss the role of the parietal cortex, anterior and subgenual cingulate cortex, frontal cortex and temporal lobe in light of the cardinal symptoms of AN. The insights of the current review may ultimately lead to the development of new treatments.

Distinct parietal and temporal pathways to the homologues of Broca's area in the monkey

The homologues of the two distinct architectonic areas 44 and 45 that constitute the anterior language zone (Broca's region) in the human ventrolateral frontal lobe were recently established in the macaque monkey. Although we know that the inferior parietal lobule and the lateral temporal cortical region project to the ventrolateral frontal cortex, we do not know which of the several cortical areas found in those regions project to the homologues of Broca's region in the macaque monkey and by means of which white matter pathways. We have used the autoradiographic method, which permits the establishment of the cortical area from which axons originate (i.e., the site of injection), the precise course of the axons in the white matter, and their termination within particular cortical areas, to examine the parietal and temporal connections to area 44 and the two subdivisions of area 45 (i.e., areas 45A and 45B). The results demonstrated a ventral temporo-frontal stream of fibers that originate from various auditory, multisensory, and visual association cortical areas in the intermediate superolateral temporal region. These axons course via the extreme capsule and target most strongly area 45 with a more modest termination in area 44. By contrast, a dorsal stream of axons that originate from various cortical areas in the inferior parietal lobule and the adjacent caudal superior temporal sulcus was found to target both areas 44 and 45. These axons course in the superior longitudinal fasciculus, with some axons originating from the ventral inferior parietal lobule and the adjacent superior temporal sulcus arching and forming a simple arcuate fasciculus. The cortex of the most rostral part of the inferior parietal lobule is preferentially linked with the ventral premotor cortex (ventral area 6) that controls the orofacial musculature. The cortex of the intermediate part of the inferior parietal lobule is linked with both areas 44 and 45. These findings demonstrate the posterior parietal and temporal connections of the ventrolateral frontal areas, which, in the left hemisphere of the human brain, were adapted for various aspects of language production. These precursor circuits that are found in the nonlinguistic, nonhuman, primate brain also exist in the human brain. The possible reasons why these areas were adapted for language use in the human brain are discussed. The results throw new light on the prelinguistic precursor circuitry of Broca's region and help understand functional interactions between Broca's ventrolateral frontal region and posterior parietal and temporal association areas.

Visual field map clusters in macaque extrastriate visual cortex

The macaque visual cortex contains >30 different functional visual areas, yet surprisingly little is known about the underlying organizational principles that structure its components into a complete "visual" unit. A recent model of visual cortical organization in humans suggests that visual field maps are organized as clusters. Clusters minimize axonal connections between individual field maps that represent common visual percepts, with different clusters thought to carry out different functions. Experimental support for this hypothesis, however, is lacking in macaques, leaving open the question of whether it is unique to humans or a more general model for primate vision. Here we show, using high-resolution blood oxygen level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging data in the awake monkey at 7 T, that the middle temporal area (area MT/V5) and its neighbors are organized as a cluster with a common foveal representation and a circular eccentricity map. This novel view on the functional topography of area MT/V5 and satellites indicates that field map clusters are evolutionarily preserved and may be a fundamental organizational principle of the Old World primate visual cortex.

Parallel processing strategies of the primate visual system

Incoming sensory information is sent to the brain along modality-specific channels corresponding to the five senses. Each of these channels further parses the incoming signals into parallel streams to provide a compact, efficient input to the brain. Ultimately, these parallel input signals must be elaborated on and integrated in the cortex to provide a unified and coherent percept. Recent studies in the primate visual cortex have greatly contributed to our understanding of how this goal is accomplished. Multiple strategies including retinal tiling, hierarchical and parallel processing and modularity, defined spatially and by cell type-specific connectivity, are used by the visual system to recover the intricate detail of our visual surroundings.

Parietal regions processing visual 3D shape extracted from disparity

Three-dimensional (3D) shape is important for the visual control of grasping and manipulation. We used fMRI to study the processing of 3D shape extracted from disparity in human parietal cortex. Subjects stereoscopically viewed random-line stimuli portraying a 3D structure, a 2D structure in multiple depth planes or a 2D structure in the fixation plane. Subtracting the second from the first condition yields depth-structure sensitive regions and subtracting the third from the second position-in-depth sensitive regions. Two anterior intraparietal sulcus (IPS) regions, the dorsal IPS medial (DIPSM) and the dorsal IPS anterior (DIPSA) regions, were sensitive to depth structure and not to position in depth, while a posterior IPS region, the ventral IPS (VIPS) region, had a mixed sensitivity. All three IPS regions were also sensitive to 2D shape, indicating that they carry full 3D shape information. Finally DIPSM, but not DIPSA was sensitive to a saccade-related task. These results underscore the importance of anterior IPS regions in the processing of 3D shape, in agreement with their proximity to grasping-related regions. Moreover, comparison with the results of Durand, J.B., Nelissen, K., Joly, O., Wardak, C., Todd, J.T., Norman, J.F., Janssen, P., Vanduffel, W., Orban, G.A., 2007. Anterior Regions of Monkey Parietal Cortex Process Visual 3D Shape. Neuron 55, 493-505 obtained in the monkey indicates that DIPSA and DIPSM may represent human homologues for the posterior part of AIP and the adjoining part of LIP respectively.

Multimodal activity in the parietal cortex

Goal-directed behavior can be thought of as dynamic links between sensory stimuli and motor acts. Neural correlates of many of the intermediate events of both auditory and visual goal-directed behaviors are found in the posterior parietal cortex. Here, we review studies that have focused on how neurons in the lateral intraparietal area (area LIP) differentially process auditory and visual stimuli. Together, these studies suggest that area LIP contains a modality-dependent representation that is highly dependent on behavioral context.

Neural correlates of learning and working memory in the primate posterior parietal cortex

The posterior parietal cortex has been traditionally associated with coordinate transformations necessary for interaction with the environment and with visual-spatial attention. More recently, involvement of posterior parietal cortex in other cognitive functions such as working memory and task learning has become evident. Neurophysiological experiments in non-human primates and human imaging studies have revealed neural correlates of memory and learning at the single neuron and at the brain network level. During working memory, posterior parietal neurons continue to discharge and to represent stimuli that are no longer present. This activation resembles the responses of prefrontal neurons, although important differences have been identified in terms of the ability to resist stimulation by distracting stimuli, which is more evident in the prefrontal than the posterior parietal cortex. Posterior parietal neurons also become active during tasks that require the organization of information into larger structured elements and their activity is modulated according to learned context-dependent rules. Neural correlates of learning can be observed in the mean discharge rate and spectral power of neuronal spike trains after training to perform new task sets or rules. These findings demonstrate the importance of posterior parietal cortex in brain networks mediating working memory and learning.

Matching spatial with ontological brain regions using Java tools for visualization, database access, and integrated data analysis

Brain atlases are widely used in experimental neuroscience as tools for locating and targeting specific brain structures. Delineated structures in a given atlas, however, are often difficult to interpret and to interface with database systems that supply additional information using hierarchically organized vocabularies (ontologies). Here we discuss the concept of volume-to-ontology mapping in the context of macroscopical brain structures. We present Java tools with which we have implemented this concept for retrieval of mapping and connectivity data on the macaque brain from the CoCoMac database in connection with an electronic version of "The Rhesus Monkey Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates" authored by George Paxinos and colleagues. The software, including our manually drawn monkey brain template, can be downloaded freely under the GNU General Public License. It adds value to the printed atlas and has a wider (neuro-)informatics application since it can read appropriately annotated data from delineated sections of other species and organs, and turn them into 3D registered stacks. The tools provide additional features, including visualization and analysis of connectivity data, volume and centre-of-mass estimates, and graphical manipulation of entire structures, which are potentially useful for a range of research and teaching applications.

Long-range neural coupling through synchronization with attention

In a crowded visual scene, we typically employ attention to select stimuli that are behaviorally relevant. Two likely cortical sources of top-down attentional feedback to cortical visual areas are the prefrontal (PFC) and posterior parietal (PPC) cortices. Recent neurophysiological studies show that areas in PFC and PPC process signals about the locus of attention earlier than in extrastriate visual areas and are therefore likely to mediate attentional selection. Moreover, attentional selection appears to be mediated in part by neural synchrony between neurons in PFC/PPC and early visual areas, with phase relationships that seem optimal for increasing the impact of the top-down inputs to the visual cortex.

Condition-dependent and condition-independent target selection in the macaque posterior parietal cortex

During a visual search, information about the visual attributes of an object and associated behavioral requirements is essential for discriminating a target object from others in the visual field. On the other hand, information about the object's position appears to be more important when orienting the eyes toward the target. To understand the neural mechanisms underlying such a transition (i.e., from nonspatial- to spatial-based target selection), we examined the dependence of neuronal activity in the macaque posterior parietal cortex (PPC) on visual sensory properties and ongoing task demands. Monkeys were trained to perform a visual search task in which either a shape or color singleton within an array was the target, depending on the ongoing search dimension. The visual properties and the task demands were manipulated by independently changing the stimulus features (shape and color), singleton type, and search dimension. We found that a subset of PPC neurons significantly discriminated the target from other stimuli only when the target was defined by a particular stimulus dimension and had specific stimulus features, such as a shape-singleton, bar stimulus (condition-dependent target selection), whereas another subset did so irrespective of the stimulus features and the target-defining dimension (condition-independent target selection). There was thus a great deal of variety in the neural representations specifying the locus of the target. The coexistence of these distinctly different types of target-discrimination processes suggests that the PPC may be situated at the level where the transition from nonspatial- to spatial-based target selection takes place.

Direction selectivity of neurons in the macaque lateral intraparietal area

The lateral intraparietal area (LIP) of the macaque is believed to play a role in the allocation of attention and the plan to make saccadic eye movements. Many studies have shown that LIP neurons generally encode the static spatial location demarked by the receptive field (RF). LIP neurons might also provide information about the features of visual stimuli within the RF. For example, LIP receives input from cortical areas in the dorsal visual pathway that contain many direction-selective neurons. Here we examine direction selectivity of LIP neurons. Animals were only required to fixate while motion stimuli appeared in the RF. To avoid spatial confounds, the motion stimuli were patches of randomly arrayed dots that moved with 100% coherence in eight different directions. We found that the majority (61%) of LIP neurons were direction selective. The direction tuning was fairly broad, with a median direction-tuning bandwidth of 136 degrees. The average strength of direction selectivity was weaker in LIP than that of other areas of the dorsal visual stream but that difference may be because of the fact that LIP neurons showed a tonic offset in firing whenever a visual stimulus was in the RF, independent of direction. Direction-selective neurons do not seem to constitute a functionally distinct subdivision within LIP, because those neurons had robust, sustained delay-period activity during a memory delayed saccade task. The direction selectivity could also not be explained by asymmetries in the spatial RF, in the hypothetical case that the animals attended to slightly different locations depending on the direction of motion in the RF. Our results show that direction selectivity is a distinct attribute of LIP neurons in addition to spatial encoding.

Neurophysiology and neuroanatomy of reflexive and volitional saccades: evidence from studies of humans

This review provides a summary of the contributions made by human functional neuroimaging studies to the understanding of neural correlates of saccadic control. The generation of simple visually guided saccades (redirections of gaze to a visual stimulus or pro-saccades) and more complex volitional saccades require similar basic neural circuitry with additional neural regions supporting requisite higher level processes. The saccadic system has been studied extensively in non-human (e.g., single-unit recordings) and human (e.g., lesions and neuroimaging) primates. Considerable knowledge of this system's functional neuroanatomy makes it useful for investigating models of cognitive control. The network involved in pro-saccade generation (by definition largely exogenously-driven) includes subcortical (striatum, thalamus, superior colliculus, and cerebellar vermis) and cortical (primary visual, extrastriate, and parietal cortices, and frontal and supplementary eye fields) structures. Activation in these regions is also observed during endogenously-driven voluntary saccades (e.g., anti-saccades, ocular motor delayed response or memory saccades, predictive tracking tasks and anticipatory saccades, and saccade sequencing), all of which require complex cognitive processes like inhibition and working memory. These additional requirements are supported by changes in neural activity in basic saccade circuitry and by recruitment of additional neural regions (such as prefrontal and anterior cingulate cortices). Activity in visual cortex is modulated as a function of task demands and may predict the type of saccade to be generated, perhaps via top-down control mechanisms. Neuroimaging studies suggest two foci of activation within FEF - medial and lateral - which may correspond to volitional and reflexive demands, respectively. Future research on saccade control could usefully (i) delineate important anatomical subdivisions that underlie functional differences, (ii) evaluate functional connectivity of anatomical regions supporting saccade generation using methods such as ICA and structural equation modeling, (iii) investigate how context affects behavior and brain activity, and (iv) use multi-modal neuroimaging to maximize spatial and temporal resolution.

Using time-to-contact information to assess potential collision modulates both visual and temporal prediction networks

Accurate estimates of the time-to-contact (TTC) of approaching objects are crucial for survival. We used an ecologically valid driving simulation to compare and contrast the neural substrates of egocentric (head-on approach) and allocentric (lateral approach) TTC tasks in a fully factorial, event-related fMRI design. Compared to colour control tasks, both egocentric and allocentric TTC tasks activated left ventral premotor cortex/frontal operculum and inferior parietal cortex, the same areas that have previously been implicated in temporal attentional orienting. Despite differences in visual and cognitive demands, both TTC and temporal orienting paradigms encourage the use of temporally predictive information to guide behaviour, suggesting these areas may form a core network for temporal prediction. We also demonstrated that the temporal derivative of the perceptual index tau (tau-dot) held predictive value for making collision judgements and varied inversely with activity in primary visual cortex (V1). Specifically, V1 activity increased with the increasing likelihood of reporting a collision, suggesting top-down attentional modulation of early visual processing areas as a function of subjective collision. Finally, egocentric viewpoints provoked a response bias for reporting collisions, rather than no-collisions, reflecting increased caution for head-on approaches. Associated increases in SMA activity suggest motor preparation mechanisms were engaged, despite the perceptual nature of the task.

Combining structural connectivity and response latencies to model the structure of the visual system

Several approaches exist to ascertain the connectivity of the brain, and these approaches lead to markedly different topologies, often incompatible with each other. Specifically, recent single-cell recording results seem incompatible with current structural connectivity models. We present a novel method that combines anatomical and temporal constraints to generate biologically plausible connectivity patterns of the visual system of the macaque monkey. Our method takes structural connectivity data from the CoCoMac database and recent single-cell recording data as input and employs an optimization technique to arrive at a new connectivity pattern of the visual system that is in agreement with both types of experimental data. The new connectivity pattern yields a revised model that has fewer levels than current models. In addition, it introduces subcortical–cortical connections. We show that these connections are essential for explaining latency data, are consistent with our current knowledge of the structural connectivity of the visual system, and might explain recent functional imaging results in humans. Furthermore we show that the revised model is not underconstrained like previous models and can be extended to include newer data and other kinds of data. We conclude that the revised model of the connectivity of the visual system reflects current knowledge on the structure and function of the visual system and addresses some of the limitations of previous models.

Visual perception is very important to us, something we can easily come to realize if we imagine ourselves blind. The visual system consists of numerous interconnected brain areas. If we are to understand the functioning of the visual system, then we will need to understand the connectivity between these areas. Current models of the visual system have a number of limitations. One of these is that the time it takes for the neural signal to reach a certain area often seems inconsistent with the place of that area in the overall structure of the system; e.g., the signal might arrive relatively quickly at an area generally located “higher” in the visual system and slowly at an area located in the “lower” part. We combine data about the known connectivity in the monkey brain with timing data to find a network structure that is consistent with both kinds of data. The results show that the timing data can be explained when the network contains direct routes from subcortical areas to “higher” cortical areas. We show that our model has fewer limitations than previous models and might explain unresolved issues in the study of connectivity in the human brain.

Neural correlates of access to short-term memory

Behavioral research has led to the view that items in short-term memory can be parsed into two categories: a single item in the focus of attention that is available for immediate cognitive processing and a small set of other items that are in a heightened state of activation but require retrieval for further use. We examined this distinction by using an item-recognition task. The results show that the item in the focus of attention is represented by increased activation in inferior temporal representational cortices relative to other information in short-term memory. Functional connectivity analyses suggest that activation of these inferior temporal regions is maintained via frontal- and posterior-parietal contributions. By contrast, other items in short-term memory demand retrieval mechanisms that are represented by increased activation in the medial temporal lobe and left mid-ventrolateral prefrontal cortex. These results show that there are two distinctly different sorts of access to information in short-term memory, and that access by retrieval operations makes use of neural machinery similar to that used in long-term memory retrieval.

Coding of shape and position in macaque lateral intraparietal area

The analysis of object shape is critical for both object recognition and grasping. Areas in the intraparietal sulcus of the rhesus monkey are important for the visuomotor transformations underlying actions directed toward objects. The lateral intraparietal (LIP) area has strong anatomical connections with the anterior intraparietal area, which is known to control the shaping of the hand during grasping, and LIP neurons can respond selectively to simple two-dimensional shapes. Here we investigate the shape representation in area LIP of awake rhesus monkeys. Specifically, we determined to what extent LIP neurons are tuned to shape dimensions known to be relevant for grasping and assessed the invariance of their shape preferences with regard to changes in stimulus size and position in the receptive field. Most LIP neurons proved to be significantly tuned to multiple shape dimensions. The population of LIP neurons that were tested showed barely significant size invariance. Position invariance was present in a minority of the neurons tested. Many LIP neurons displayed spurious shape selectivity arising from accidental interactions between the stimulus and the receptive field. We observed pronounced differences in the receptive field profiles determined by presenting two different shapes. Almost all LIP neurons showed spatially selective saccadic activity, but the receptive field for saccades did not always correspond to the receptive field as determined using shapes. Our results demonstrate that a subpopulation of LIP neurons encodes stimulus shape. Furthermore, the shape representation in the dorsal visual stream appears to differ radically from the known representation of shape in the ventral visual stream.
