Formation and Structure of Self-Assembled Monolayers

Hydrophobicity of Self-Assembled Monolayers of Alkanes: Fluorination, Density, Roughness, and Lennard-Jones Cutoffs

The interplay of fluorination and structure of alkane self-assembled monolayers and how these affect hydrophobicity are explored via molecular dynamics simulations, contact angle goniometry, and surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy. Wetting coefficients are found to grow linearly in the monolayer density for both alkane and perfluoroalkane monolayers. The larger contact angles of monolayers of perfluorinated alkanes are shown to be primarily caused by their larger molecular volume, which leads to a larger nearest-neighbor grafting distance and smaller tilt angle. Increasing the Lennard-Jones force cutoff in simulations is found to increase hydrophilicity. Specifically, wetting coefficients scale like the inverse square of the cutoff, and when extrapolated to the infinite cutoff limit, they yield contact angles that compare favorably to experimental values. Nanoscale roughness is also found to reliably increase monolayer hydrophobicity, mostly via the reduction of the entropic part of the work of adhesion. Analysis of depletion lengths shows that droplets on nanorough surfaces partially penetrate the surface, intermediate between Wenzel and Cassie-Baxter states.

Molecular Approach to Engineer Two-Dimensional Devices for CMOS and beyond-CMOS Applications

Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have attracted tremendous research interest over the last two decades. Their unique optical, electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties make 2DMs key building blocks for the fabrication of novel complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) and beyond-CMOS devices. Major advances in device functionality and performance have been made by the covalent or noncovalent functionalization of 2DMs with molecules: while the molecular coating of metal electrodes and dielectrics allows for more efficient charge injection and transport through the 2DMs, the combination of dynamic molecular systems, capable to respond to external stimuli, with 2DMs makes it possible to generate hybrid systems possessing new properties by realizing stimuli-responsive functional devices and thereby enabling functional diversification in More-than-Moore technologies. In this review, we first introduce emerging 2DMs, various classes of (macro)molecules, and molecular switches and discuss their relevant properties. We then turn to 2DM/molecule hybrid systems and the various physical and chemical strategies used to synthesize them. Next, we discuss the use of molecules and assemblies thereof to boost the performance of 2D transistors for CMOS applications and to impart diverse functionalities in beyond-CMOS devices. Finally, we present the challenges, opportunities, and long-term perspectives in this technologically promising field.

Effectiveness of Biofunctionalization of Titanium Surfaces with Phosphonic Acid

Surface functionalization of dental implant surfaces has been a developing field in biomaterial research. This study aimed to obtain self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) using carboxyethylphosphonic acid on the surface of titanium (Ti) screws, and assessed the surface characteristics, biomechanical, and cellular behavior on the obtained specimens. This study had three groups, i.e., a control (untreated screws), a test group treated with phosphonic acid, and a third group with treated acid and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP-2) for in vitro analysis of cell lines. The assessed parameters included surface wettability, surface characteristics using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), protein immobilization, and cellular behavior of fibroblasts and mesenchymal stem cells of adipose tissue (MSCat cells). For surface wettability, a Welch test was performed to compare the contact angles between control (67 ± 1.83) and test (18.84 ± 0.72) groups, and a difference was observed in the mean measurements, but was not statistically significant. The SEM analysis showed significant surface roughness on the test screws and the cellular behavior of fibroblasts, and MSCat cells were significantly improved in this group, with fibroblasts having a polygonal shape with numerous vesicles and MSCat cells stable and uniformly coating the test Ti surface. Surface biofunctionalization of Ti surfaces with phosphonic acid showed promising results in this study, but remains to be clinically validated for its applications.

Visualization of Thermal Transport Properties of Self-Assembled Monolayers on Au(111) by Contact and Noncontact Scanning Thermal Microscopy

Thermal transport properties of patterned binary self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) were examined using scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) with both contact and noncontact methods. We fabricated two-dimensional (2D) patterns with two separate domains of n-hexadecanethiol/benzenethiol, benzenethiol/n-butanethiol, or n-hexadecanethiol/n-butanethiol. In the experimental setup, the efficiency of thermal transport from a SThM tip to the SAM surface can be evaluated in terms of the temperature change at the SThM tip. In the contact regime, where a SThM tip physically contacts the SAM surface, direct thermal transport through the SAM and radiation-based thermal transport through the space where SAMs exist may contribute to a drop in temperature at the tip. In the noncontact regime, thermal transport relies on radiation-based heat dissipation from the heated tip to the SAMs. 2D mapping of the spatial temperature distribution on SAMs reflects the difference in thermal transport properties of the two SAM domains. We found that the contact method is effective for visualizing the temperature contrast, which reflects the thermal transport properties of the constituent molecules when the domains of the SAMs have a similar height, while the noncontact method allows visualization of the temperature distribution, which is related to the height of each domain of the SAMs, rather than the chemical structures of the constituent molecules. Combination of contact and noncontact SThM enables 2D imaging of thermal transport properties and topographic imaging simultaneously and represents a new technique for investigating the thermal properties of materials surfaces, which is essential for nanoscale thermal management.

Passive Control of Silane Diffusion for Gradient Application of Surface Properties

Liquid lithography represents a robust technique for fabricating three-dimensional (3D) microstructures on a two-dimensional template. Silanization of a surface is often a key step in the liquid lithography process and is used to alter the surface energy of the substrate and, consequently, the shape of the 3D microfeatures produced. In this work, we present a passive technique that allows for the generation of silane gradients along the length of a substrate. The technique relies on a secondary diffusion chamber with a single opening, leading to a directional introduction of silane to the substrate via passive diffusion. The secondary chamber geometry influences the deposited gradient, which is shown to be well captured by Monte Carlo simulations that incorporate the passive diffusion and grafting processes. The technique ultimately allows the user to generate a range of substrate wettabilities on a single chip, enhancing throughput for organ-on-a-chip applications by mimicking the spatial variability of tissue topographies present in vivo.

Fabrication of a Wearable Flexible Sweat pH Sensor Based on SERS-Active Au/TPU Electrospun Nanofibers

Development of wearable sensing platforms is essential for the advancement of continuous health monitoring and point-of-care testing. Eccrine sweat pH is an analyte that can be noninvasively measured and used to diagnose and aid in monitoring a wide range of physiological conditions. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) offers a rapid, optical technique for fingerprinting of biomarkers present in sweat. In this paper, a mechanically flexible, nanofibrous, SERS-active substrate was fabricated by a combination of electrospinning of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and Au sputter coating. This substrate was then investigated for suitability toward wearable sweat pH sensing after functionalization with two commonly used pH-responsive molecules, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA), and 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPy). The developed SERS pH sensor was found to have good resolution (0.14 pH units for 4-MBA; 0.51 pH units for 4-MPy), with only 1 μL of sweat required for a measurement, and displayed no statistically significant difference in performance after 35 days (p = 0.361). Additionally, the Au/TPU nanofibrous SERS pH sensors showed fast sweat-absorbing ability as well as good repeatability and reversibility. The proposed methodology offers a facile route for the fabrication of SERS substrates which could also be used to measure a wide range of health biomarkers beyond sweat pH.

An IR Spectroscopy Study of the Degradation of Surface Bound Azido-Groups in High Vacuum

Controlled surface functionalization with azides to perform on surface "click chemistry" is desired for a large range of fields such as material engineering and biosensors. In this work, the stability of an azido-containing self-assembled monolayer in high vacuum is investigated using in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The intensity of the antisymmetric azide stretching vibration is found to decrease over time, suggesting the degradation of the azido-group in high vacuum. The degradation is further investigated at three different temperatures and at seven different nitrogen pressures ranging from 1 × 10^-6 mbar to 5 × 10^-3 mbar. The degradation is found to increase at higher temperatures and at lower nitrogen pressures. The latter supporting the theory that the degradation reaction involves the decomposition into molecular nitrogen. For the condition with the highest degradation detected, only 63% of azides is found to remain at the surface after 8 h in vacuum. The findings show a significant loss in control of the surface functionalization. The instability of azides in high vacuum should therefore always be considered when depositing or postprocessing azido-containing layers.

Controlling Heterogeneous Catalysis with Organic Monolayers on Metal Oxides

ConspectusA key theme of heterogeneous catalysis research is achieving control of the environment surrounding the active site to precisely steer the reactivity toward desired reaction products. One method toward this goal has been the use of organic ligands or self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on metal nanoparticles. Metal-bound SAMs are typically employed to improve catalyst selectivity but often decrease the reaction rate as a result of site blocking from the ligands. Recently, the use of metal oxide-bound organic modifiers such as organophosphonic acid (PA) SAMs has shown promise as an additional method for tuning reactions on metal oxide surfaces as well as modifying oxide-supported metal catalysts. In this Account, we summarize recent approaches to enhance catalyst performance with oxide-bound monolayers. These approaches include (1) modification of metal oxide catalysts to tune surface reactions, (2) formation of SAMs on the oxide component of supported metal catalysts to modify sites at the metal-support interface, and (3) enhancement of catalyst performance (e.g., stability) through modification of sites remote from the active sites.Both the headgroups and organic tail groups of PA SAMs or other ligands can influence reactions on metal oxide surfaces. Binding of the headgroup can selectively poison certain active sites, altering the selectivity in a manner analogous to metal-bound ligands (at the expense of active site quantity). Moreover, tail groups can be functionalized to interact favorably with reactants and intermediates, for instance through dipole-dipole interactions. On supported metal catalysts like Pt/Al₂O₃, PA SAMs can selectively form on the oxide support. This selective deposition allows for modification of the metal-support interface with minimal blockage of metal sites. PA headgroups were shown to provide tunable acid sites at the interface, dramatically improving hydrodeoxygenation rates of various alcohols. Additionally, organic tail functionality was used to activate or stabilize specific reactants at the interface, such as with the use of amine-functionalized PAs to stabilize chemisorption of CO₂ during the reverse water gas shift reaction. PAs have also been found to affect the electronic properties of bulk metal sites through long-range electron withdrawal via the oxide, providing an additional avenue to tune catalytic behavior. Finally, organic modifiers were shown to enhance catalytic performance without directly modifying the active site. For instance, in biphasic liquid environments the modification of catalyst particles with hydrophobic or hydrophilic SAMs shifts the selectivity of multipath reactions on the basis of the hydrophobicities of different intermediates and products. As another "long-range" effect, the deposition of ligands on oxide supports improved catalyst stability through both improved resistance to sintering and suppression of active site poisoning. The recent contributions discussed in this Account demonstrate the versatility and significant potential for the approach of modifying catalysts with oxide-bound organic monolayers.

Atomic Force Microscopy and Infrared Nanospectroscopy of COVID-19 Spike Protein for the Quantification of Adhesion to Common Surfaces

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed millions of lives worldwide, sickened many more, and has resulted in severe socioeconomic consequences. As society returns to normal, understanding the spread and persistence of SARS CoV-2 on commonplace surfaces can help to mitigate future outbreaks of coronaviruses and other pathogens. We hypothesize that such an understanding can be aided by studying the binding and interaction of viral proteins with nonbiological surfaces. Here, we propose a methodology for investigating the adhesion of the SARS CoV-2 spike glycoprotein on common inorganic surfaces such as aluminum, copper, iron, silica, and ceria oxides as well as metallic gold. Quantitative adhesion was obtained from the analysis of measured forces at the nanoscale using an atomic force microscope operated under ambient conditions. Without imposing further constraints on the measurement conditions, our preliminary findings suggest that spike glycoproteins interact with similar adhesion forces across the majority of the metal oxides tested with the exception to gold, for which attraction forces ∼10 times stronger than all other materials studied were observed. Ferritin, which was used as a reference protein, was found to exhibit similar adhesion forces as SARS CoV-2 spike protein. This study results show that glycoprotein adhesion forces for similar ambient humidity, tip shape, and contact surface are nonspecific to the properties of metal oxide surfaces, which are expected to be covered by a thin water film. The findings suggest that under ambient conditions, glycoprotein adhesion to metal oxides is primarily controlled by the water capillary forces, and they depend on the surface tension of the liquid water. We discuss further strategies warranted to decipher the intricate nanoscale forces for improved quantification of the adhesion.

Amine-Anchored Aromatic Self-Assembled Monolayer Junction: Structure and Electric Transport Properties

We studied the structure and transport properties of aromatic amine self-assembled monolayers (NH₂-SAMs) on an Au surface. The oligophenylene and oligoacene amines with variable lengths can form a densely packed and uniform monolayer under proper assembly conditions. Molecular junctions incorporating an eutectic Ga-In (EGaIn) top electrode were used to characterize the charge transport properties of the amine monolayer. The current density J of the junction decreases exponentially with the molecular length (d), as J = J₀ exp(-βd), which is a sign of tunneling transport, with indistinguishable values of J₀ and β for NH₂-SAMs of oligophenylene and oligoacene, indicating a similar molecule-electrode contact and tunneling barrier for two groups of molecules. Compared with the oligophenylene and oligoacene molecules with thiol (SH) as the anchor group, a similar β value (∼0.35 Å^-1) of the aromatic NH₂-SAM suggests a similar tunneling barrier, while a lower (by 2 orders of magnitude) injection current J₀ is attributed to lower electronic coupling Γ of the amine group with the electrode. These observations are further supported by single-level tunneling model fitting. Our study here demonstrates the NH₂-SAMs can work as an effective active layer for molecular junctions, and provide key physical parameters for the charge transport, paving the road for their applications in functional devices.

Bioinspired dopamine and zwitterionic polymers for non-fouling surface engineering

Biofouling is a serious problem in the medical, marine, and all other industrial fields as it poses significant health risks and financial losses. Therefore, there is a great demand for endowing surfaces with antifouling properties to mitigate biofouling. Zwitterionic polymers (containing an equimolar number of homogeneously distributed anionic and cationic groups on the polymer chains) have been used extensively as one of the best antifouling materials for surface modification. Being a superhydrophilic polymer, zwitterionic polymers need a strong binding agent to continue to remain attached to the surface for long-term applications. The use of a mussel-inspired dopamine adhesive functional layer is one of the most widely exploited approaches for the attachment of a zwitterion layer on the surface via thiol and amine chemistry. Based on recent studies, we have categorized this dopamine and zwitterion conjugation into four different approaches: (1) conjugation of dopamine with zwitterions by direct modification of zwitterions with the dopamine functional moiety; (2) co-deposition of dopamine with zwitterionic polymers; (3) zwitterionic post modification of the polydopamine (PDA) coated surface; and (4) surface-initiated polymerization of zwitterionic polymers using dopamine modified initiators. In this review, we have briefly discussed about all the possible conjugation mechanisms and reactions for this promising dopamine and zwitterion conjugation and how this conjugated system significantly contributes to the development of non-fouling surfaces along with the other applications.

Improvement of the froth flotation of LiAlO2 and melilite solid solution via pre-functionalization

In this work froth flotation studies with LiAlO₂ (lithium-containing phase) and Melilite solid solution (gangue phase) are presented. The system was optimized with standard collectors and with compounds so far not applied as collectors. Furthermore, the principle of self-assembled monolayers was introduced to a froth flotation process for the first time resulting in excellent yields and selectivities.

Spin-crossover nanoparticles anchored on MoS2 layers for heterostructures with tunable strain driven by thermal or light-induced spin switching

In the past few years, the effect of strain on the optical and electronic properties of MoS₂ layers has attracted particular attention as it can improve the performance of optoelectronic and spintronic devices. Although several approaches have been explored, strain is typically externally applied on the two-dimensional material. In this work, we describe the preparation of a reversible 'self-strainable' system in which the strain is generated at the molecular level by one component of a MoS₂-based composite material. Spin-crossover nanoparticles were covalently grafted onto functionalized layers of semiconducting MoS₂ to form a hybrid heterostructure. Their ability to switch between two spin states on applying an external stimulus (light irradiation or temperature change) serves to generate strain over the MoS₂ layer. A volume change accompanies this spin crossover, and the created strain induces a substantial and reversible change of the electrical and optical properties of the heterostructure.

Nanoscale Metal-Organic Frameworks: Recent developments in synthesis, modifications and bioimaging applications

Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as eye-catching materials in recent years. They are widely used in numerous fields of chemistry thanks to their desirable properties. MOFs have a key role in the development of bioimaging platforms that are hopefully expected to effectually pave the way for accurate and selective detection and diagnosis of abnormalities. Recently, many types of MOFs have been employed for detection of RNA, DNA, enzyme activity and small-biomolecules, as well as for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT), which are valuable methods for clinical analysis. The optimal performance of the MOF in the bio-imaging field depends on the core structure, synthesis method and modifications processes. In this review, we have attempted to present crucial parameters for designing and achieving an efficient MOF as bioimaging platforms, and provide a roadmap for researchers in this field. Moreover, the influence of modifications/fractionalizations on MOFs performance has been thoroughly discussed and challenging problems have been extensively addressed. Consideration is mainly focused on the principal concepts and applications that have been achieved to modify and synthesize advanced MOFs for future applications.

Differences in ITO Surfaces According to the Formation of Aromatic Rings and Aliphatic Self-Assembled Monolayers for Organic Light-Emitting Diode Applications

In this study, we investigated the effects on the characteristic changes in OLED devices of using self-assembled monolayers with different functional groups as the hole injection layer, resulting in changes in their performance. Thus, we confirmed that it is possible to control the wetting properties, surface roughness, and work function of the indium tin oxide (ITO) surface by introducing self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The contact angle measurements confirmed that the substrate surface contact angle tended to increase with SAM deposition. In addition, AFM measurements confirmed that the substrate surface roughness tended to decrease when SAM was deposited on the surface. Finally, it was confirmed through the work function measurement results that the work function increased when the ITO surface was modified by SAM. Furthermore, compared to OLEDs using only the ITO anode, the SAM-modified device showed a higher current density (359.68 A/cm²), improved brightness (76.8 cd/cm²), and a smaller turn-on voltage (7 V). This approach provides a simple route for fabricating organic light-emitting diode applications.

Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surfaces on Aluminum for Corrosion Protection with Improved Self-Healing Ability

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) can be formed by impregnating lubricants in porous surfaces with low surface energy. In this study, SLIPSs have been obtained on practically important aluminum with a porous anodic alumina layer by impregnating lubricants containing organic additives. The additive-containing lubricants change the surface slippery even without prior organic coating of the porous alumina surface. The additive-containing SLIPSs reveal a low water sliding angle of <5° and markedly improved corrosion resistance in an acetic acid solution containing chloride. The SLIPSs are formed by the in situ adsorption of the organic additives on the porous alumina surface. The scratched defects induce corrosion of the organic coating-type SLIPSs, whereas the additive-containing SLIPSs sustain high corrosion resistance even after introducing scratch defects. The adsorption of the organic additive in lubricants and refilling of the lubricant are responsible for the self-healing of the corrosion resistance. Thus, the additive-containing SLIPSs are promising self-healing corrosion-resistant surfaces.

Ultradoping Boron on Si(100) via Solvothermal Chemistry*

Ultradoping introduces unprecedented dopant levels into Si, which transforms its electronic behavior and enables its use as a next-generation electronic material. Commercialization of ultradoping is currently limited by gas-phase ultra-high vacuum requirements. Solvothermal chemistry is amenable to scale-up. However, an integral part of ultradoping is a direct chemical bond between dopants and Si, and solvothermal dopant-Si surface reactions are not well-developed. This work provides the first quantified demonstration of achieving ultradoping concentrations of boron (∼1e14 cm² ) by using a solvothermal process. Surface characterizations indicate the catalyst cross-reacted, which led to multiple surface products and caused ambiguity in experimental confirmation of direct surface attachment. Density functional theory computations elucidate that the reaction results in direct B-Si surface bonds. This proof-of-principle work lays groundwork for emerging solvothermal ultradoping processes.

Atom Probe Study of 1-Octadecanethiol Self-Assembled Monolayers on Platinum (111) and (200) Surfaces

Atom probe tomography measurements of self-assembled monolayers of 1-octadecanethiol on platinum tips were performed and their fragmentation behavior under the influence of different laser powers was investigated. The carbon backbone evaporates in the form of small hydrocarbon fragments consisting of one to four carbon atoms, while sulfur evaporates exclusively as single ions. The carbon molecules evaporate at very low fields of 5.9 V/nm, while S requires a considerably higher evaporation field of 23.4 V/nm. With increasing laser power, a weak, but noticeable trend toward larger fragment sizes is observed. No hydrocarbon fragments containing S are detected, indicating that a strong S–Pt bond has formed. The observed surface coverage of S fits well with literature values and is higher for (111)-oriented samples than for (200).

Molecular Conformation in Charge Tunneling across Large-Area Junctions

Self-assembled monolayers are predicated on thermodynamic equilibrium; hence, their properties project accessible relaxation pathways. Herein, we demonstrate that charge tunneling correlates with conformational degrees of freedom(s). Results from open chain and cyclic head groups show that, as expected, distribution in tunneling data correlates with the orientation of the head group, akin to the odd-even effect and more importantly the degree of conformational freedom, but fluctuates with applied bias. Trends in nature of distributions in current density illuminate the need for higher statistical moments in understanding these rather dynamic systems. We employ skewness, kurtosis, and estimation plots to show that the conformational degree of freedom in the head group significantly amplifies the odd-even effect and may lead to enhanced or perturbed tunneling based on whether the head group is on an odd- or even-parity spacer.

Influence of the terminal group on the thermal decomposition reactions of carboxylic acids on copper: nature of the carbonaceous film

The effect of the terminal groups on the nature of the films formed by the thermal decomposition of carboxylic acids on copper is studied in ultrahigh vacuum using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). The influence of the presence of vinyl or alkynyl terminal groups and chain length is studied using heptanoic, octanoic, 6-heptenoic, 7-octenoic, 6-heptynoic and 7-octynoic acids. The carboxylic acids form strongly bound carboxylates following adsorption on copper at room temperature, and thermally decompose between ∼500 and 650 K. Previous work has shown that this occurs by the carboxylate plane tilting towards the surface to eliminate carbon dioxide and deposit a hydrocarbon fragment. The fragment can react to evolve hydrogen or form oligomeric species on the surface, where the amount of carbon increases for carboxylic acids that contain terminal functional groups that can anchor to the surface. These results will be used to compare with the carbonaceous films formed by the mechanochemical decomposition of carboxylic acids on copper, which occurs at room temperature. This is expected to lead to less carbon being deposited on the surface than during thermal decomposition.

Construction and Characterizations of Antibacterial Surfaces Based on Self-Assembled Monolayer of Antimicrobial Peptides (Pac-525) Derivatives on Gold

Background: Infection that is related to implanted biomaterials is a serious issue in the clinic. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been considered as an ideal alternative to traditional antibiotic drugs, for the treatment of infections, while some problems, such as aggregation and protein hydrolysis, are still the dominant concerns that compromise their antimicrobial efficiency in vivo. Methods: In this study, antimicrobial peptides underwent self-assembly on gold substrates, forming good antibacterial surfaces, with stable antibacterial behavior. The antimicrobial ability of AMPs grafted on the surfaces, with or without glycine spaces or a primer layer, was evaluated. Results: Specifically, three Pac-525 derivatives, namely, Ac-CGn-KWRRWVRWI-NH2 (n = 0, 2, or 6) were covalently grafted onto gold substrates via the self-assembling process for inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Furthermore, the alkanethiols HS(CH)10SH were firstly self-assembled into monolayers, as a primer layer (SAM-SH) for the secondary self-assembly of Pac-525 derivatives, to effectively enhance the bactericidal performance of the grafted AMPs. The -(CH)10-S-S-G6Pac derivative was highly effective against S. aureus and E. coli, and reduced the viable amount of E. coli and S. aureus to 0.4% and 33.2%, respectively, after 24 h of contact. In addition, the immobilized AMPs showed good biocompatibility, promoting bone marrow stem cell proliferation. Conclusion: the self-assembled monolayers of the Pac-525 derivatives have great potential as a novel therapeutic method for the treatment of implanted biomaterial infections.

Large scale model lipid membrane movement induced by a cation switch

A biomembrane sample system where millimolar changes of cations induce reversible large scale (≥ 200 Å) changes in the membrane-to-surface distance is described. The system composes of a free-floating bilayer, formed adjacent to a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). To examine the membrane movements, differently charged floating bilayers in the presence and absence of Ca2+ and Na+, respectively, were examined using neutron reflectivity and quartz crystal microbalance measurements, alongside molecular dynamics simulations. In neutron reflectivity the variation of Ca2+ and Na+ concentration enabled precision manipulation of the membrane-to-surface distance. Simulations suggest that Ca2+ ions bridge between SAM and bilayer whereas the more diffuse binding of Na+, especially to bilayers, is unable to fully overcome the repulsion between anionic floating bilayer and anionic SAM. Reproduced neutron reflectivity results with quartz crystal microbalance demonstrate the potential of this easily producible sample system to become a standard analysis tool for e.g. investigating membrane binding effects, endocytosis and cell signaling.

The Direct Cause of Amplified Wettability: Roughness or Surface Chemistry?

Higher contact angles or amplified wettability observed on surfaces of rough solid materials are typically expressed as a function of a physical dimension (roughness factor). Herein, we present a simple experimental approach that demonstrates that roughness may only magnify the inherent surface chemistry that seems to have direct influence on surface wettability. We investigate gradual change in surface chemistry (hydrophobisation) of rough and smooth glass surfaces, from a very low concentration (10−7 M) of dichlorodimethylsilane, DCDMS through various intermediate hydrophilic/hydrophobic states to when the surfaces are maximally hydrophobised with DCDMS at 0.1 M. The wettability of the modified glasses was studied by water contact angle measurements using drop shape analysis system (DSA). The data obtained indicate a deviation from Wenzel model, with the functionalized rough glass surfaces showing higher reactivity towards DCDMS when compared to the smooth glass surfaces, indicating that the two surfaces are not chemically identical. Our study reveals that just like transforming a solid material to powder, a well-divided glass (rough) surface may not only exhibit a greater surface area than the smooth counterpart as rightly predicted by the Wenzel model, but seems to be bloated with functional groups (–OH or –CH3) that can amplify surface interaction when such functional species dominate the solid surface.

Self-Assembled Monolayers for Batteries

Current studies in the Li-battery field are focusing on building systems with higher energy density than ever before. The path toward this goal, however, should not ignore aspects such as safety, stability, and cycling life. These issues frequently originate from interfacial instability, and therefore, precise surface chemistry that allows for accurate control of material surface and interfaces is much in demand for advanced battery research. Molecular self-assembly as a surface chemistry tool is considered to surpass many conventional coating techniques due to its intrinsic merits such as spontaneous organization, molecular-scale uniformity, and structural diversity. Recent publications have demonstrated the power of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) in addressing pressing issues in the battery field such as the chemical stability of Li, but many more investigations are needed to fully explore the potential and impact of this technique on energy storage. This perspective is the first of its kind devoted to SAMs in batteries and related materials. Recent research progress on SAMs in batteries is reviewed and mainly falls in two categories, including the improvement of chemical stability and the regulation of nucleation in conversion electrode reactions. Future applications and consideration of SAMs in energy storage are discussed. We believe these summaries and outlooks are highly stimulative and may benefit future advancements in battery chemistry.

Preparation of Ultrathin Gold Films with Subatomic Surface Roughness

Nanoscale device fabrication requires control over film growth at the atomic scale. Growth conditions must be tuned in consideration of interface parameters like chemical bonding, surface free energy, and lattice matching. In metals, electronic properties may also be utilized for control of physical parameters. Quantum size effects can induce metals to spontaneously form specific shapes and sizes according to their electronic structure. Unfortunately, such electronic growth is generally known only for a few systems and is typically only stable under cryogenic conditions. In this work, we explore a recently discovered class of electronic growth systems in which metal films are grown upon the relatively inert surfaces of van der Waals crystals. In this class of materials, the electronic growth is highly stable at room temperature and actually requires higher temperature annealing to achieve proper equilibrium. We work with the Au/MoS₂ system, which shows excellent stability and can readily form discrete and atomically flat nanostructures. Here, we show how the electronic growth modes facilitate the formation of atomically flat films with nanometer scale thickness. The surface roughness of these films was found to be less than a single atom over several square microns, creating nearly perfect surfaces for studies of self-assembled monolayers or other applications.

Metal-dependent electrochemical discrimination of DNA quadruplex sequences

Films of four different DNA quadruplex-forming (G4) sequences (c-KIT, c-MYC, HTelo, and BCL2) on gold surfaces were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to evaluate whether they evoke unique electrochemical responses that can be used for their identification. This could render EIS an alternative means for the determination of G4 sequences of unknown structure. Towards, this end, cation-dependent topology changes in the presence of either K⁺, K⁺ in combination with Li⁺, or Pb²⁺ in the presence of Li⁺ were first evaluated by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, and electrochemical studies were performed subsequently. As a result, G4-sequence specific charge transfer resistance (R_CT) patterns were in fact observed for each G4 sequence, allowing their discrimination by EIS.

Effect of Contact Geometry on Spin Transport in Amine-Ended Single-Molecule Magnetic Junctions

We employ the first-principles calculation with non-equilibrium Green's function method to comprehensively investigate the crucial role of interfacial geometry in spin transport properties of Co/1,4-benzenediamine (BDA)/Co single-molecule magnetic junctions (SMMJs). Two bonding mechanisms are proposed for the hard-hard Co-N coupling: (1) the covalent bonding between the H-dissociated amine linker and spin-polarized Co apex atoms and (2) the dative interaction between the H-non-dissociated (denoted by +H) amine linker and Co apex atoms. The former covalent contact dominates the π-resonance interfacial spin selection that can be well preserved in H-dissociated cases regardless of the choice of top, bridge, and hollow contact sites. From our detailed analyses of spin-polarized transmission spectra, local density of states, and molecular density of states, the underlying mechanism is that the strong hybridization between Co-d, N-p y , and the π-orbital of the phenyl ring in dissociated cases renders the 2-fold HOMO (4-fold LUMO) of the central molecule closer to the Fermi energy. In contrast, the enlarged Co-N bond length of the latter dative contact in the H-non-dissociated case not only destroys the spinterface coupling but also blocks the spin injection. This theoretical work may provide vital and practical insights to illustrate the spin transport property in real amine-ended SMMJs since the contact geometries and interfacial bond mechanisms remain unclear during the breaking junction technique.

Structural and Chemical Modifications Towards High-Performance of Triboelectric Nanogenerators

Harvesting abundant mechanical energy has been considered one of the promising technologies for developing autonomous self-powered active sensors, power units, and Internet-of-Things devices. Among various energy harvesting technologies, the triboelectric harvesters based on contact electrification have recently attracted much attention because of their advantages such as high performance, light weight, and simple design. Since the first triboelectric energy-harvesting device was reported, the continuous investigations for improving the output power have been carried out. This review article covers various methods proposed for the performance enhancement of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), such as a triboelectric material selection, surface modification through the introduction of micro-/nano-patterns, and surface chemical functionalization, injecting charges, and their trapping. The main purpose of this work is to highlight and summarize recent advancements towards enhancing the TENG technology performance through implementing different approaches along with their potential applications. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the TENG technology and its factors affecting the output power as material selection, surface physical and chemical modification, charge injection, and trapping techniques.

Elucidating the Mechanism of Condensation-Mediated Degradation of Organofunctional Silane Self-Assembled Monolayer Coatings

Dropwise condensation is favorable for numerous industrial and heat/mass transfer applications due to the enhanced heat transfer performance that results from efficient condensate removal. Organofunctional silane self-assembled monolayer (SAM) coatings are one of the most common ultrathin low surface energy materials used to promote dropwise condensation of water vapors because of their minimal thermal resistance and scalable synthesis process. These SAM coatings typically degrade (i.e., condensation transitions from the efficient dropwise mode to the inefficient filmwise mode) rapidly during water vapor condensation. More importantly, the condensation-mediated coating degradation/failure mechanism(s) remain unknown and/or unproven. In this work, we develop a mechanistic understanding of water vapor condensation-mediated organofunctional silane SAM coating degradation and validate our hypothesis through controlled coating synthesis procedures on silicon/silicon dioxide substrates. We further demonstrate that a pristine organofunctional silane SAM coating resulting from a water/moisture-free coating environment exhibits superior long-term robustness during water vapor condensation. Our molecular/nanoscale surface characterizations, pre- and post-condensation heat transfer testing, indicate that the presence of moisture in the coating environment leads to uncoated regions of the substrate that act as nucleation sites for coating degradation. By elucidating the reasons for formation of these degradation nuclei and demonstrating a method to suppress such defects, this study provides new insight into why low surface energy silane SAM coatings degrade during water vapor condensation. The proposed approach addresses a key bottleneck (i.e., coating failure) preventing the adoption of efficient dropwise condensation methods in industry, and it will facilitate enhanced phase-change heat transfer technologies in industrial applications.

Porous Honeycomb Self-Assembled Monolayers: Tripodal Adsorption and Hidden Chirality of Carboxylate Anchored Triptycenes on Ag

Molecules with tripodal anchoring to substrates represent a versatile platform for the fabrication of robust self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), complementing the conventional monopodal approach. In this context, we studied the adsorption of 1,8,13-tricarboxytriptycene (Trip-CA) on Ag(111), mimicked by a bilayer of silver atoms underpotentially deposited on Au. While tripodal SAMs frequently suffer from poor structural quality and inhomogeneous bonding configurations, the triptycene scaffold featuring three carboxylic acid anchoring groups yields highly crystalline SAM structures. A pronounced polymorphism is observed, with the formation of distinctly different structures depending on preparation conditions. Besides hexagonal molecular arrangements, the occurrence of a honeycomb structure is particularly intriguing as such an open structure is unusual for SAMs consisting of upright-standing molecules. Advanced spectroscopic tools reveal an equivalent bonding of all carboxylic acid anchoring groups. Notably, density functional theory calculations predict a chiral arrangement of the molecules in the honeycomb network, which, surprisingly, is not apparent in experimental scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images. This seeming discrepancy between theory and experiment can be resolved by considering the details of the actual electronic structure of the adsorbate layer. The presented results represent an exemplary showcase for the intricacy of interpreting STM images of complex molecular films. They are also further evidence for the potential of triptycenes as basic building blocks for generating well-defined layers with unusual structural motifs.

Manipulating Carrier Concentration by Self-Assembled Monolayers in Thermoelectric Polymer Thin Films

Conjugated polymers have attracted considerable attention for thermoelectric applications in recent years due to their plentiful resources, diverse structures, mechanical flexibility, and low thermal conductivity. Herein, we demonstrate a new strategy of modulating charge carrier concentration of chemical-doped polymer films by modifying the substrate with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The SAM with a trifluoromethyl terminal group is found to accumulate holes in the polymer thin films, while the SAM with an amino terminal group tends to donate electrons to the polymer films. Thermoelectric thin films of conjugated donor-acceptor copolymer exhibit high power factors of 55.6-61.0 μW m^-1 K^-2 on SAMs with polar terminal groups. These power factors are 49% higher than that on the SAM with the nonpolar terminal group and 3 times higher than that on pristine substrate. The high power factor is ascribed to the modulated charge carrier concentration and improved charge carrier mobility as induced by SAMs.

Effect of cavitation intensity control on self-assembling of alkanethiols on gold in room temperature ionic liquids

This study investigates the effect of cavitation intensity on self-assembling of alkanethiol molecules on gold in room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) under low frequency ultrasound irradiation (20 kHz). The use of RTILs, with low vapor pressure, enabled cavitation activity to be controlled up to quenching through pressure decrease within an argon-saturated atmosphere. This control possibility was used to acquire deeper insights into the role of cavitation on self-assembling processes. It was shown by electrochemical, contact angles and Polarization Modulation - Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) measurements that cavitation activates orientation and organization of self-assembled monolayers (SAM). X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that, even if chemical adsorption of molecules is highly activated under ultrasound irradiation, it is not dependent on acoustic cavitation intensity.

Challenges for Incorporating Optical Switchability in Organic-Based Electronic Devices

Transistors operate by controlling the current flowing from a source to a drain electrode via a third electrode (gate), thus giving access to a binary treatment (ON/OFF or 0/1) of the signal currently exploited in microelectronics. Introducing a second independent lever to modulate the current would allow for more complex logic functions amenable to a single electronic component and hence to new opportunities for advanced electrical signal processing. One avenue is to add this second dimension with light by incorporating photochromic molecules in current organic-based electronic devices. In this Spotlight, we describe different concepts that have been implemented in organic thin films and in molecular junctions as well as some pitfalls that have been highlighted thanks to theoretical modeling.

Ultrastable Glassy Polymer Films with an Ultradense Brush Morphology

Glassy polymer films with extreme stability could enable major advancements in a range of fields that require the use of polymers in confined environments. Yet, from a materials design perspective, we now know that the glass transition temperature (T_g) and thermal expansion of polymer thin films can be dramatically different from those characteristics of the bulk, i.e., exhibiting confinement-induced diminished thermal stability. Here, we demonstrate that polymer brushes with an ultrahigh grafting density, i.e., an ultradense brush morphology, exhibit a significant enhancement in thermal stability, as manifested by an exceptionally high T_g and low expansivity. For instance, a 5 nm thick polystyrene brush film exhibits an ∼75 K increase in T_g and ∼90% reduction in expansivity compared to a spin-cast film of similar thickness. Our results establish how morphology can overcome confinement and interfacial effects in controlling thin-film material properties and how this can be achieved by the dense packing and molecular ordering in the amorphous state of ultradense brushes prepared by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization in combination with a self-assembled monolayer of initiators.

Translational Diffusion Dynamics in Divalent Metal-Phosphonate Monolayers

Self-assembled monolayers are attractive for surface modification due to their ease of synthesis and the range of chemical functionality that can be applied. Metal-phosphonate monolayer properties can be controlled through the metal ions that can be used in their formation. The organization and fluid properties of these monolayers can be understood in the context of their thermodynamic properties and the association and dissociation kinetics that proceed at the metal-phosphonate complex. In this work, four different M(II)-phosphonate monolayers were synthesized and the diffusional behavior of free and tethered chromophores was evaluated using fluorescence recovery after photobleaching measurements. The ω-terminal group identity of the metal-phosphonate monolayer was varied to determine its effect on monolayer dynamics.

An estimation on the mechanical stabilities of SAMs by low energy Ar+ cluster ion collision

The stability of the molecular self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) is of vital importance to the performance of the molecular electronics and their integration to the future electronics devices. Here we study the effect of electron irradiation-induced cross-linking on the stability of self-assembled monolayer of aromatic 5,5′-bis(mercaptomethyl)-2,2′-bipyridine [BPD; HS-CH₂-(C₅H₃N)₂-CH₂-SH] on Au (111) single crystal surface. As a refence, we also study the properties of SAMs of electron saturated 1-dodecanethiol [C12; CH₃-(CH₂)₁₁-SH] molecules. The stability of the considered SAMs before and after electron-irradiation is studied using low energy Ar⁺ cluster depth profiling monitored by recording the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) core level spectra and the UV-photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) in the valance band range. The results indicate a stronger mechanical stability of BPD SAMs than the C12 SAMs. The stability of BPD SAMs enhances further after electron irradiation due to intermolecular cross-linking, whereas the electron irradiation results in deterioration of C12 molecules due to the saturated nature of the molecules. The depth profiling time of the cross-linked BPD SAM is more than 4 and 8 times longer than the profiling time obtained for pristine and BPD and C12 SAMs, respectively. The UPS results are supported by density functional theory calculations, which show qualitative agreement with the experiment and enable us to interpret the features in the XPS spectra during the etching process for structural characterization. The obtained results offer helpful options to estimate the structural stability of SAMs which is a key factor for the fabrication of molecular devices.

Nonspecific Binding-Fundamental Concepts and Consequences for Biosensing Applications

Nature achieves differentiation of specific and nonspecific binding in molecular interactions through precise control of biomolecules in space and time. Artificial systems such as biosensors that rely on distinguishing specific molecular binding events in a sea of nonspecific interactions have struggled to overcome this issue. Despite the numerous technological advancements in biosensor technologies, nonspecific binding has remained a critical bottleneck due to the lack of a fundamental understanding of the phenomenon. To date, the identity, cause, and influence of nonspecific binding remain topics of debate within the scientific community. In this review, we discuss the evolution of the concept of nonspecific binding over the past five decades based upon the thermodynamic, intermolecular, and structural perspectives to provide classification frameworks for biomolecular interactions. Further, we introduce various theoretical models that predict the expected behavior of biosensors in physiologically relevant environments to calculate the theoretical detection limit and to optimize sensor performance. We conclude by discussing existing practical approaches to tackle the nonspecific binding challenge in vitro for biosensing platforms and how we can both address and harness nonspecific interactions for in vivo systems.

Heterogeneous assembly of water from the vapor phase-Physical experiments and simulations with binding trifunctional organosilanes at the vapor/solid interface

A trace amount of interfacial water is required to initiate hydrosilation reactions of trifunctional organosilanes to form surface assemblies. In recent studies, we have learned that water also has a critical role in directing molecular placement on surfaces because water can react with silicon to provide oxygenated sites for surface binding. Consequently, the wettability nature of substrates influences the placement and density of organosilane films formed by vapor-phase reactions. Nanopatterning protocols were designed using vapor-phase organosilanes and colloidal lithography to compare the wettability differences of hydrophilic mica(0001) compared to relatively hydrophobic Si(100) as a strategy for tracking the location of water on surfaces. The competition between hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains for the adsorption and coalescence of water condensed from vapor can be mapped indirectly by mapping the organosilanes, which bind to water at the solid interface, using atomic force microscopy. Trifunctional octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) was used as a marker molecule to map out the areas of the surface where water was deposited. The effect of systematic changes in film thickness and surface coverage of OTS was evaluated at the vapor/solid interface by adding an incremental amount of water to sealed reaction vessels to wet the surface and assessing the outcome after reaction with vapor-phase trichlorosilane. Reactive molecular dynamics simulations of the silicon-water vapor interface combined with electronic structure calculations of oxygenated silicon clusters with methyltrichlorosilane provided insight of the mechanism for surface binding, toward understanding the nature of the interface and wettability factors, which influence the association and placement of silane molecules on surfaces.
