Microstructural and Dynamical Heterogeneities in Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a special category of molten salts solely composed of ions with varied molecular symmetry and charge delocalization. The versatility in combining varied cation-anion moieties and in functionalizing ions with different atoms and molecular groups contributes to their peculiar interactions ranging from weak isotropic associations to strong, specific, and anisotropic forces. A delicate interplay among intra- and intermolecular interactions facilitates the formation of heterogeneous microstructures and liquid morphologies, which further contributes to their striking dynamical properties. Microstructural and dynamical heterogeneities of ILs lead to their multifaceted properties described by an inherent designer feature, which makes ILs important candidates for novel solvents, electrolytes, and functional materials in academia and industrial applications. Due to a massive number of combinations of ion pairs with ion species having distinct molecular structures and IL mixtures containing varied molecular solvents, a comprehensive understanding of their hierarchical structural and dynamical quantities is of great significance for a rational selection of ILs with appropriate properties and thereafter advancing their macroscopic functionalities in applications. In this review, we comprehensively trace recent advances in understanding delicate interplay of strong and weak interactions that underpin their complex phase behaviors with a particular emphasis on understanding heterogeneous microstructures and dynamics of ILs in bulk liquids, in mixtures with cosolvents, and in interfacial regions.

Applications of Nonconventional Green Extraction Technologies in Process Industries: Challenges, Limitations and Perspectives

This study reviewed five different nonconventional technologies which are aligned with green concepts of product recovery from raw materials on industrial scale, with minimal energy consumption and chemical use. Namely, this study reviewed supercritical fluid extraction (SCFE), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), ultrasound extraction (UAE) and pulsed electric fields extraction (PEFE). This paper provides an overview of relevant innovative work done in process industries on different plant matrices for functional value-added compounds and byproduct production. A comparison of the five extraction methods showed the supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) process to be more reliable despite some limitations and challenges in terms of extraction yield and solubility of some bioactive compounds when applied in processing industries. However, these challenges can be solved by using ionic liquids as a trainer or cosolvent to supercritical CO2 during the extraction process. The choice of ionic liquid over organic solvents used to enhance extraction yield and solubility is based on properties such as hydrophobicity, polarity and selectivity in addition to a safe environment.

Properties of Dicationic Disiloxane Ionic Liquids

A number of dicationic ionic liquids with a disiloxane linker between imidazolium cations and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion were synthesized and characterized. Melting points, viscosity, and volatility in a vacuum were measured; the thermal and hydrolytic stability of ionic liquids were also studied. The dependence of the properties on the structure of substituents in the cation of the ionic liquid was demonstrated.

Developing New Inexpensive Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids with High Thermal Stability and a Greener Synthetic Profile

Ionic liquids (ILs) have advantageous physical properties, which resulted in a rapid growth of research in this area in the past 15 years. One of the biggest challenges preventing the widespread use of ILs is the cost of production due to complex synthetic routes and/or expensive starting materials. Keeping in mind these industrial needs for scale-up and the desirable properties for applications in the lubrification area, here, we report the design and synthesis of four novel series of hydrophobic room-temperature ILs (RTILs) achieved from cheap and commercially available starting materials, namely, silicon-based, imidazolium-based, phosphonium-based, and monomer imidazolium-based. These syntheses were developed as expedited chemistry protocols and possess a greener synthetic profile compared to previously reported ILs of similar structures. All the RTILs were characterized by 1D NMR (¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, ³¹P NMR, ¹⁹F NMR, and ¹¹B NMR) and 2D NMR (COSY, HSQC, and HMBC) analyses, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and chemical tests (primarily the silver nitrate test). Preliminary thermal analysis tests by thermogravimetric analysis show all novel RTILs display remarkably high thermal stabilities (386-474 °C). Differential scanning calorimetry data show low glass transitions ranging from -36 to -72 °C, which suggests good free volume and ion mobility.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of piperidinium ionic liquids: a comparison to the charge delocalised pyridinium analogues

In this study, nine piperidinium-based ionic liquids are analysed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effect of alkyl substituent length and the nature of the anion on the electronic environment of the cation are investigated. The electronic environment of the hetero carbon and the cationic nitrogen is compared between two structurally similar cations, 1-octyl-1-methylpiperidinium ([C8C1Pip]+) versus 1-octylpyridinium ([C8Py]+). Due to the charge delocalisation, the hetero carbon component within [C8Py]+ is more positively charged, which exhibits much higher binding energy; whilst the cationic nitrogen component is in the similar electronic environment. The impact of the charge delocalisation on the electronic environment of the anion is also compared between [C8C1Pip]+ and [C8Py]+. It is found that for the more basic anion, the cation can significantly affect the electronic environment of the anion; for the less basic anion, such an effect concentrates on the component bearing more negative point charges.

Comparison of the Extraction Efficiency of Isoflavone Compounds from Puerariae lobatae by Ionic Liquids with 11 Anions and 8 Imidazolium-Based Cations

Although the field of natural product extraction with ionic liquids (ILs) is already a crowded one, the guiding rules regarding the selection of suitable ILs for extraction are still lacking. In this study, the extraction capacity of 32 ILs was investigated using Puerariae lobatae as a testing material, namely, 11 [BMIM]-based, 9 [CMIM]-based, 8 [C n MIM][Br] and 8 [C n MIM][BF4] ILs (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16) were studied. Three series of concentrations (0.02, 0.50, 2.00 M) were investigated, and the results demonstrated that the extraction capacity increased with the rising IL concentrations except for 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tosylate ([BMIM][Tos]). Generally, all the 0.50 and 2.00 M ILs led to the best extraction results. At low concentrations, the IL extraction capacity is strongly dependent on the anions and cations. However, the relationship between extraction capacity and anions or cations gradually becomes weak as increasing IL concentrations. Finally, the solution of ILs was prepared in aqueous or 60% methanol depending on the solubility. The pH can vary from strong acid to weak alkaline. Extraction capacity of 32 ILs varying in concentrations has a good negative correlation with the pH, except for five [BMIM]-ILs.

Compatibilization Effect of Ionic Liquid-Based Surfactants on Physicochemical Properties of PBS/Rice Starch Blends: An Initial Study

Polybutylene succinate (PBS)/rice starch (RS) blends were prepared via the hot-melt extrusion technique through the usage of a twin-screw extruder without and containing ionic liquid-based surfactants (ILbS). Two types of ILbS were used, specifically, 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate, [C₁₂mim][OTf] and 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [C₁₂mim][NTf₂] were mixed into the PBS/RS blends at the different contents (0–8 wt.%). The tensile and flexural results showed that the blends containing ILbS have a high tensile extension and tensile energy compared to the blend without ILbS. The blends containing ILbS also have a high flexural extension compared with the blend without ILbS. The blends containing [C₁₂mim][NTf₂] have a significant improvement in the tensile energy (up to 239%) and flexural extension (up to 17%) in comparison with the blends containing [C₁₂mim][OTf]. The FTIR spectra demonstrated that the presence of ILbS in the blends generated the intermolecular interactions (ion-dipole force and hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction) between PBS and RS. The DSC results exhibited that the melting points of the prepared blends are decreased with the addition of ILbS. However, the TGA results showed that the thermal decomposition of the blends containing ILbS are higher than the blend without ILbS. The values of decomposition temperature were 387.4 °C, 381.8 °C, and 378.6 °C of PBS/RS-[C₁₂mim][NTf₂], PBS/RS-[C₁₂mim][OTf], and PBS/RS, respectively. In conclusion, the ILbS could significantly improve the physicochemical properties of the PBS/RS blends by acting as a compatibilizer.

Bioderived ionic liquid-based pretreatment enhances methane production from Agave tequilana bagasse

In recent years, bioderived ionic liquids have gained attention as a new promising approach for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment. In this work, Agave tequilana bagasse (ATB), an attractive bioenergy feedstock in Mexico, was pretreated with a bioderived ionic liquid (cholinium lysinate) for the first time. Optimization of the pretreatment conditions, in-depth biomass characterization and methane generation via anaerobic digestion are the main contributions of this work. The results indicated optimized pretreatment conditions of 124 °C, 205 min and 20% solids loading by applying a central composite design. The optimized pretreated ATB was able to produce an elevated sugar yield of 51.4 g total sugars per g ATB due to their high delignification (45.4%) and changes in their chemical linkages although an increase in cellulose crystallinity was found (0.51 untreated vs. 0.62 pretreated). Finally, the mass balance showed that 38.2 kg glucose and 13.1 kg xylose were converted into 12.5 kg of methane per 100 kg of untreated ATB, representing 86% of the theoretical methane yield and evidencing the potential of this biorefinery scheme.

The Influence of Ionic Liquids on the Effectiveness of Analytical Methods Used in the Monitoring of Human and Veterinary Pharmaceuticals in Biological and Environmental Samples-Trends and Perspectives

Recent years have seen the increased utilization of ionic liquids (ILs) in the development and optimization of analytical methods. Their unique and eco-friendly properties and the ability to modify their structure allows them to be useful both at the sample preparation stage and at the separation stage of the analytes. The use of ILs for the analysis of pharmaceuticals seems particularly interesting because of their systematic delivery to the environment. Nowadays, they are commonly detected in many countries at very low concentration levels. However, due to their specific physiological activity, pharmaceuticals are responsible for bioaccumulation and toxic effects in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems as well as possibly upsetting the body's equilibrium, leading to the dangerous phenomenon of drug resistance. This review will provide a comprehensive summary of the use of ILs in various sample preparation procedures and separation methods for the determination of pharmaceuticals in environmental and biological matrices based on liquid-based chromatography (LC, SFC, TLC), gas chromatography (GC) and electromigration techniques (e.g., capillary electrophoresis (CE)). Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of ILs, which can appear during extraction and separation, will be presented and attention will be given to the criteria to be followed during the selection of ILs for specific applications.

Phytotoxicity of ionic liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been one of the most interesting chemical entities over the last two decades and have been investigated by numerous scientists all over the world. However, during IL research, it has been shown that these compounds present toxicity to both terrestrial and aquatic plants, among others. The phytotoxicity of ILs depends on the type of cation, the length of the alkyl chain in the substituent or enantioselectivity, on the concentration used, and, it appears that the type of anion may also have an impact on toxicity. The toxic effects of ILs on plants also depend on the conditions under which such tests are conducted. The results may help facilitate the development of protective environmental measures against IL-induced negative effects, but they may also be used in various landscape-related areas, such as herbology, to design new substances with weed killing properties.

Glycine-betaine-derived ionic liquids: Synthesis, characterization and ecotoxicological evaluation

Ionic Liquids (ILs) are generically regarded as environmentally "harmless" and thus, assumed as "non-toxic". However, due to the endless design possibilities, their ecotoxicological profile is still poorly known. An accurate knowledge on the toxicity of a substance is required, under the scope of environmental regulation worldwide, before their application and commercialization. Knowledge on the relationship between the chemical structure and toxic effects is essential for the future design of more biocompatible solvents. Focusing on the use of ILs as base lubricants, lubricant additives, or even as potential working fluids for absorption heat pumps, the knowledge on its environmental impact is of great importance, due to the possibility of spills. In this specific context, four analogues of glycine-betaine-based ILs (AGB-ILs) and four glycine-betaine based ILs (GB-ILs) were synthesized and characterized. Their ecotoxicity was assessed using representatives of two trophic levels in aquatic ecosystems, the bacteria Allivibrio fischeri (commonly used as a screening test organism) and the microalgae Raphidocelis subcapitata (as an alternative test organism that has been proven very sensitive to several IL families). The microalgae were more sensitive than the bacteria, hence, following a precautionary principle, we recommend considering the toxicity towards microalgae as an indicator in future studies regarding the focused ILs. Although four of the studied ILs were derived from a natural amino acid, all were considered hazardous for the aquatic environment, disproving the primary theory that all ILs derived from natural compounds are benign. Furthermore, the modification in the structure of anion and the cation can lead to the increase of toxicity.

1-Octyl-3-(3-(1-methylpyrrolidiniumyl)propyl)imidazolium Bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide

The title compound 1-octyl-3-(3-(1-methylpyrrolidiniumyl)propyl)imidazolium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide was prepared in three steps. This asymmetrical dicationic ionic liquid (ADIL) is composed of two different positively charged head groups (1-octylimidazolium and methylpyrrolidinium cations), which are linked through a propyl alkyl chain and by two bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide anions. The final ADIL was obtained by a simple metathesis reaction of the corresponding dibromide ionic liquid, in turn prepared by alkylation of 3-(3-bromopropyl)-1-propylimidazolium bromide. The ADIL structure and those of its precursors were confirmed through NMR and infrared spectroscopy, and the thermal properties of all compounds were evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Density, solubility, and viscosity were measured for the prepared compounds.

Unexpected Intrinsic Lability of Thiol-Functionalized Carboxylate Imidazolium Ionic Liquids

New thiol-functionalized carboxylate ionic liquids (ILs), varying both for the cation and for the anion structures, have been prepared as new potential redox switching systems by reacting either 3-mercapto propionic acid (3-MPA) or N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) with commercially available methyl carbonate ILs. Different ratios of thiol/disulfide ILs were obtained depending both on the acid employed in the neutralization reaction and on the reaction conditions used. Surprisingly, the imidazolium ILs displayed limited thermal stability which resulted in the formation of an imidazole 2-thione and a new sulfide ionic liquid. Conversely, the formation of the imidazole 2-thione was not observed when phosphonium disulfide ILs were heated, thus confirming the involvement of the imidazolium ring in an unexpected side reaction. An insight into the mechanism of the decomposition has been provided by means of DFT calculations.

Synthesis, characterization, ecotoxicity and biodegradability evaluations of novel biocompatible surface active lauroyl sarcosinate ionic liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) based surfactants have been emerged as attractive alternatives to the conventional surfactants owing to their tailor-made and eco-friendly properties. Therefore, present study described the synthesis of nine new fatty amino acids based IL surfactants utilizing lauroyl sarcosinate anion and pyrrolidinium, imidazolium, pyridinium, piperidinium, morpholinium and cholinium cations for the first time. The synthesized surface active lauroyl sarcosinate ionic liquids (SALSILs) were characterized by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR and TGA. Next, the surface tension and critical micellar concentrations were determined and compared with the surface properties of ILs based surfactants. Further, the toxicity and biodegradability of the synthesized SALSIILs were evaluated to confirm their safe and efficient process applications. The studies revealed that three out of nine synthesized SALSILs containing pyridinium cation have showed strong activity towards the tested microbial growth. The remaining six SALSILs met the biocompatible measures demonstrating moderate to low activity depends on the tested microbes. The alicyclic SALSILs containing morpholinium and piperidinium cations have demonstrated 100% biodegradation after 28 days of the test period. Overall, it is believed that the synthesized SALSILs could effectively replace the conventional surfactants in a wide variety of applications.

Preparation and Characterization of Cellulose Acetate Propionate Films Functionalized with Reactive Ionic Liquids

1-(1,3-diethoxy-1,3-dioxopropan-2-ylo)-3-methylimidazolium bromide (RIL1_Br), 1-(2-etoxy-2-oxoethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bromide (RIL2_Br), 1-(2-etoxy-2-oxoethyl)-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (RIL3_BF4) ionic liquids were synthesized. Subsequently, the dense cellulose acetate propionate (CAP)-based materials containing from 9 to 28.6 wt % of these reactive ionic liquids were elaborated. Reactive ionic liquids (RILs) were immobilized in CAP as a result of the transesterification reaction. The yield of this reaction was over 90% with respect to the used RIL. The physicochemical properties of resultant films were studied using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The RIL incorporation influenced the morphology of films by increasing their surface roughness with the rise of RIL content. The thermal stability of CAP-based membranes was dependent on the nature of the ionic liquid. Nevertheless, it was proven that CAP films containing RILs were stable up to 120-150 °C. Transport properties were characterized by water permeation tests. It was found that the type and the amount of the ionic liquid in the CAP matrix substantially influenced the transport properties of the prepared hybrid materials.

Comparative evaluation of antimicrobial activity of different types of ionic liquids

In order to identify most suitable ionic liquids (ILs) for potential applications in infection prevention and control, in the present study we comparatively evaluated the antimicrobial potency and hemolytic activity of 15 ILs, including 11 previously described and four newly synthesized ILs, using standard microbiological procedures against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. ILs showing the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) were tested for their hemolytic activity. Three ILs characterized by low MIC values and low hemolytic activity, namely 1-methyl-3-dodecylimidazolium bromide, 1-dodecyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bromide, and 1-dodecyl-1-methylpiperidinium bromide were further investigated to determine their minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and their ability to inhibit biofilm formation by Staphylococcus aureus or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Killing kinetics results revealed that both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria are rapidly killed after exposure to MBC of the selected ILs. Furthermore, the selected ILs efficiently inhibited biofilm formation by S. aureus or P. aeruginosa. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic study investigating the antimicrobial potential of different types of ionic liquids using standard microbiological procedures. In the overall, the selected ILs showed low hemolytic and powerful antimicrobial activity, and efficient inhibition of biofilm formation, especially against S. aureus, suggesting their possible application as anti-biofilm agents.

Ionic Liquid Composite Polybenzimidazol Membranes for High Temperature PEMFC Applications

A series of proton exchange membranes based on polybenzimidazole (PBI) were prepared using the low cost ionic liquids (ILs) derived from 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (BMIM) bearing different anions as conductive fillers in the polymeric matrix with the aim of enhancing the proton conductivity of PBI membranes. The composite membranes prepared by casting method (containing 5 wt. % of IL) exhibited good thermal, dimensional, mechanical, and oxidative stability for fuel cell applications. The effects of anion, temperature on the proton conductivity of phosphoric acid-doped membranes were systematically investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The PBI composite membranes containing 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium-derived ionic liquids exhibited high proton conductivity of 0.098 S·cm-1 at 120 °C when tetrafluoroborate anion was present in the polymeric matrix. This conductivity enhancement might be attributed to the formed hydrogen-bond networks between the IL molecules and the phosphoric acid molecules distributed along the polymeric matrix.
