Abstract
It has recently been demonstrated that superatoms, which can exhibit behaviors reminiscent of atoms in the periodic table, might have synthetic utility, and represent potential building blocks for the assembly of novel, nanostructured materials [Science 2004, 304, 84-87; Science 2005, 307, 231-235; J. Phys. Chem. C 2009, 113, 2664]. In this work, a new type of endohedral metallofullerene-superhalogen compound, Li@C60-BX4 (X = F, Cl, Br), is proposed and characterized using density functional theory. The electron transfer from Li@C60 to BX4 contributes greatly to the Li@C60-BX4 compound formation. Such compounds exhibit considerable stabilities with large binding energies and ionization potentials, as well as large HOMO-LUMO gaps. The investigation of the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of Li@C60-BX4 reveals a strong dependence of the static first hyperpolarizability, β0, on the atomic number of the involved halogen atom X. This means that one can enhance the first hyperpolarizabilities of the endohedral metallofullerene by introducing superhalogens. The present investigation may promote the development of novel nanomaterials with unusual properties (i.e. NLO properties), and enrich the knowledge of chemical bonds (for example, long-range interactions between trapped atoms in a C60 cage and the outside superatom motif).

Abstract
Using magnetic endohedral fullerenes for molecular spintronics requires control over their encapsulated magnetic moments. We show by field-dependent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements of Gd3N@C80 endohedral fullerenes adsorbed on a Cu surface that the magnetic moments of the encapsulated Gd atoms lie in a 4f7 ground state and couple ferromagnetically to each other. When the molecules are in contact with a ferromagnetic Ni substrate, we detect two different Gd species. The more abundant one couples antiferromagnetically to the Ni, whereas the other one exhibits a stronger and ferromagnetic coupling to the substrate. Both of these couplings to the substrate can be explained by an indirect exchange mechanism mediated by the carbon cage. The origin of the distinctly different behavior may be attributed to different orientations and thus electronic coupling of the carbon cage to the substrate, as revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy of the fullerenes on Cu.

Abstract
Hydrogen is one of the few molecules that has been incarcerated in the molecular cage of C₆₀ to form the endohedral supramolecular complex H₂@C₆₀. In this confinement, hydrogen acquires new properties. Its translation motion, within the C₆₀ cavity, becomes quantized, is correlated with its rotation and breaks inversion symmetry that induces infrared (IR) activity of H₂. We apply IR spectroscopy to study the dynamics of hydrogen isotopologues H₂, D₂ and HD incarcerated in C₆₀. The translation and rotation modes appear as side bands to the hydrogen vibration mode in the mid-IR part of the absorption spectrum. Because of the large mass difference of hydrogen and C₆₀ and the high symmetry of C₆₀ the problem is almost identical to a vibrating rotor moving in a three-dimensional spherical potential. We derive potential, rotation, vibration and dipole moment parameters from the analysis of the IR absorption spectra. Our results were used to derive the parameters of a pairwise additive five-dimensional potential energy surface for H₂@C₆₀. The same parameters were used to predict H₂ energies inside C₇₀. We compare the predicted energies and the low-temperature IR absorption spectra of H₂@C₇₀.

Abstract
Since the first proposal that fullerenes are capable of hosting atoms, ions, or clusters by the late Smalley in 1985, tremendous examples of endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) have been reported. Breaking the dogma that monometallofullerenes (mono-EMFs) always exist in the form of M@C2n while clusterfullerenes always require multiple (two to four) metal cations to stabilize a cluster that is unstable as a single moiety, here we show an unprecedented monometallic endohedral clusterfullerene entrapping an yttrium cyanide cluster inside a popular C82 cage--YCN@C(s)(6)-C82. X-ray crystallography and (13)C NMR characterization unambiguously determine the cage symmetry and the endohedal cyanide structure, unexpectedly revealing that the entrapped YCN cluster is triangular. The unprecedented monometallic clusterfullerene structure unveiled by YCN@C(s)(6)-C82 opens up a new avenue for stabilizing a cluster by a single metal cation within a carbon cage, and will surely stimulate further studies on the stability and formation mechanism of EMFs.

Abstract
Endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs), a new class of hybrid molecules formed by encapsulation of metallic species inside fullerene cages, exhibit unique properties that differ distinctly from those of empty fullerenes because of the presence of metals and their hybridization effects via electron transfer. This critical review provides a balanced but not an exhaustive summary regarding almost all aspects of EMFs, including the history, the classification, current progress in the synthesis, extraction, isolation, and characterization of EMFs, as well as their physiochemical properties and applications in fields such as electronics, photovoltaics, biomedicine, and materials science. Emphasis is assigned to experimentally obtained results, especially the X-ray crystallographic characterizations of EMFs and their derivatives, rather than theoretical calculations, although the latter has indeed enhanced our knowledge of metal-cage interactions. Finally, perspectives related to future developments and challenges in the research of EMFs are proposed. (381 references).

Abstract
The influence of the cage as well as of the cluster size has been studied in Gd-Sc nitride cluster fullerenes, which have been synthesized and isolated for these studies. A series of carbon cages ranging from C78 to C88 have been synthesized, isolated, and characterized in detail using absorption and vibrational spectroscopy as well as electrochemistry and density functional theory calculations. Gd-Sc mixed-metal cluster fullerenes in carbon cages different from C80 were described for the first time. A review of their structures, properties, and stability is given. The synthesis was performed with melamine as an effective solid source of nitrogen, providing high fullerene yield and suppressing empty fullerene formation. Substitution of gadolinium by scandium imposes a noticeable influence on the electronic structure of nitride cluster fullerenes as revealed by electrochemical, spectroscopic, and computational methods.

Abstract
The decomposition mechanism of N@C(60) derivatives has been elucidated by DFT calculations, revealing different roles of the pendant groups in the escape course of the incarcerated nitrogen. Whereas the pyrrolidine group facilitates the inversion of the incarcerated nitrogen, the cyclopropane group prohibits this process.
