Conducting PANI stimulated ZnO system for visible light photocatalytic degradation of coloured dyes

Surface Modification of SiC Powder with Sodium Humate: Adsorption Kinetics, Equilibrium, and Mechanism

Highly dispersible SiC powder was prepared using sodium humate as a modifier. The results showed that the ζ-potential absolute value of the modified SiC powder increased from 13.1 to 38.7 mV when the adsorption capacity of sodium humate on the SiC surface was 2.368 mg/g. The slurry with a maximum solid content of 65 vol % was obtained using the modified SiC powder, and the minimum viscosity value was 0.322 Pa s at a solid content of 50 vol %. The adsorption kinetics equation of sodium humate on the SiC surface is t/ q _t = 0.6253 t + 11.0472, which is in accordance with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. In addition, the isotherm equation, ln  q_e = 0.461 ln  C_e - 0.334, agrees with the Freundlich model. The adsorption energy of sodium humate on the SiC surface was 0.8280 kJ/mol, indicating that the adsorption type was physical adsorption.

Antidiabetic and antiparasitic potentials: Inhibition effects of some natural antioxidant compounds on α-glycosidase, α-amylase and human glutathione S-transferase enzymes

The glutathione S-transferase (GST) was purified from fresh blood erythrocytes using affinity column chromatography. Also, α-amylase from porcine pancreas and α-glycosidase from Saccharomyces cerevisiae were used as target enzymes. In this study, these compounds were tested on α-amylase, α-glycosidase, and GST enzymes and demonstrated effective inhibitor compounds with K_i values in the range of 8.34-40.78 μM against GST, and 120.53-892.36 nM against α-glycosidase. Additionally, the phenolic molecules were tested for the inhibition of α-amylase enzyme which determined effective inhibition profile with IC₅₀ values in the range of 175.01-626.58 nM. Indeed, these molecules can be elective inhibitors of GST, α-glycosidase and α-amylase enzymes as antidiabetic and antiparasitic agents.

Agricultural waste/graphene oxide 3D bio-adsorbent for highly efficient removal of methylene blue from water pollution

The objective of this study was to synthesize a novel, efficient and economical bio-adsorbent with three dimensions (3D) structure using a direct assembly method for removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. The raw materials were corn straw core (CSC) and graphene oxide (GO). The variables that affected adsorption capacity were tested. GO loading could facilitate the removal rate. When 5wt% GO was added (CSC-5GO), the removal rate was increased by 21.62% compared to pure CSC (64.58%). Furthermore, the adsorption by CSC-5GO fitted pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R²>0.998) and Temkin model (R²>0.955). The maximum adsorption capacity was 414.03mgg^-1 for MB at pH=12, 298K and MB concentration of 1000mgL^-1. The adsorption thermodynamic test results suggested that the adsorption was a spontaneous, exothermic and randomness decrease process. Furthermore, after five cycles of adsorption-desorption test, the adsorbent removal rate was >90%, which implied that CSC-5GO had an excellent reproducibility.

Natural adsorbent based on sawdust for removing impurities in waste lubricants

Sawdust was expected to remove impurities in waste lubricant, and was modified with sodium hydroxide and triethanolamine, which can ameliorate its surface properties and improve its adsorption capacity. The increase of hydroxyl groups, the decrease of carbonyl groups and grafting new azyl after modification were beneficial for the adsorption of impurities. The surface area of modified sawdust is 0.969 m² g^-1, which is nearly 1.39 times as much as raw sawdust. The point of zero charge for modified sawdust decreased from 6.75 to 5.68 while the crystallinity of modified sawdust increased from 40.35 to 56.16. This research discovered that compared with raw sawdust and filter paper, modified sawdust possessed superior adsorption performances. The removal percentages for Si, Al, Fe, Cu was enhanced from 2.54%, 20.34%, 16.55%, 0.26% to 15.37%, 21.99%, 45.37%, 4.88%, respectively, while that for oxidation, aromatics, sulphation, soot and water was improved by 4.33, 4.69, 0.76, 1.20, 1.28 times at 80 °C with 1000 rpm for 12 h. The research has also explored the optimum adsorption conditions (adsorption temperature, adsorption time and rotation rate). The modified sawdust showed a stable adsorption capacity for impurities under different adsorption conditions.

Degradation of organic wastewater by hydrodynamic cavitation combined with acoustic cavitation

In this paper, the decomposition of Rhodamine B (RhB) by hydrodynamic cavitation (HC), acoustic cavitation (AC) and the combination of these individual methods (HAC) have been investigated. The degradation of 20 L RhB aqueous solution was carried out in a self-designed HAC reactor, where hydrodynamic cavitation and acoustic cavitation could take place in the same space simultaneously. The effects of initial concentration, inlet pressure, solution temperature and ultrasonic power were studied and discussed. Obvious synergies were found in the HAC process. The combined method achieved the best conversion, and the synergistic effect in HAC was even up to 119% with the ultrasonic power of 220 W in a treatment time of 30 min. The time-independent synergistic factor based on rate constant was introduced and the maximum value reached 40% in the HAC system. Besides, the hybrid HAC method showed great superiority in energy efficiency at lower ultrasonic power (88-176 W). Therefore, HAC technology can be visualized as a promising method for wastewater treatment with good scale-up possibilities.

Multivariate assessment of azo dyes' biological activity parameters

Lipophilicity as key molecular descriptor of potential biological activity for selected derivatives of azo dyes was determined mathematically, by using relevant software packages and by reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography (RPTLC) on C18 and cyano modified carriers in mixtures of water/n-propanol and water/acetone. The obtained chromatographic parameters, R_M⁰ and m, of the examined azo dyes were correlated with the standard measure of lipophilicity, log P, important pharmacokinetic predictors and selected toxicity parameters applying linear regression analysis. Thereby, good correlations for each applied system were obtained (average correlation coefficient, r, 0.944, 0.885 and 0.919). Also, the correlations between the studied parameters of azo dyes were examined applying two multivariate methods (Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis). It was shown that the polarity of the substituent, and to a lesser extent its electronic effects has the greatest influence on the studied parameters of the azo dyes derivatives. Multivariate methods pointed out the similarity of the chromatographic retention constant, R_M⁰, with the parameters of lipophilicity, unlike the chromatographic parameter m, which exhibits better agreement with the toxicity parameters.

Green synthesized nanoclusters of ultra-small zero valent iron nanoparticles as a novel dye removing material

Iron based nanoparticles have gained much attention in recent years due to their unique physicochemical properties especially in the environmental remediation practices. There has been an increasing demand for new sustainable techniques for production of these nanoparticles. In the present work, a novel iron nanostructure was successfully fabricated by a facile and green approach using the aqueous extract of Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens). In fact, nanoclusters of highly reactive ultra-small (~1.5nm in diameter) iron nanoparticles were constructed. Diameters of iron nanoclusters were measured to be from 9 to 31nm with mean diameter of 19nm. Appearance of the characteristic X-ray diffraction peak of zero valent iron at 2θ=43.5° indicates the great potential of Mediterranean cypress leaf extract for complete reduction of ferric ions. The presence of phytochemicals as organic capping agent was confirmed by IR radiation absorption at 1020cm^-1 and 1623cm^-1 corresponding to the presence of CO and carbonyl groups, respectively. The fabricated nanoclusters also showed a great potential for dye removal from aqueous solution in a time dependent manner. Decolourization efficiency was calculated to be 95% in a 6h process for methyl orange removal. The results of this study suggest the possibility of using iron nanoclusters for future pollutants removal applications from aqueous environments.

Investigation of nanoscale zerovalent iron-based magnetic and thermal dual-responsive composite materials for the removal and detection of phenols

In this study, well-defined magnetic and thermal dual-responsive nanomaterials were synthesized, which contained ultrafine core-shell Fe@SiO₂ nanoparticles as magnetic core and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) as thermosensitive outer shell. The fabricated nanoparticles were characterized and investigated for the adsorption of four phenolic compounds, including bisphenol A (BPA), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-OP) and 4-n-nonylphenol (4-NP). The experimental results demonstrated that the excellent adsorption rates were attributed to hydrophobic effect, hydrogen-bonding interaction, and electrostatic attraction. The adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics model and nonlinear isotherms, indicating heterogeneous adsorption process. The adsorption efficiency of 4-NP using Fe@SiO₂@PNIPAM was more than 90% under optimized condition within 2 h. The determined maximum adsorption amounts of BPA, TBBPA, 4-OP and 4-NP were 2.43, 6.83, 24.75, and 49.34 mg g^-1, respectively. Meanwhile, a magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) method with Fe@SiO₂@PNIPAM was established to determine these four compounds simultaneously. Under the optimal conditions, the linearity ranges were in the range of 2-200, 2-300, 2-100 and 2-100 μg L^-1 for BPA, 4-OP, TBBPA, and 4-NP, respectively, and the detection limits were in the range of 0.58-0.76 μg L^-1, respectively. The applicability of the proposed method was evaluated by analyzing three fresh water samples, and satisfactory spiked recoveries in the range 70.9-119.9% were achieved. It was proved that these adsorbents could be easily collected and recycled owing to the appropriate magnetism. The results also demonstrated that the as-prepared adsorbents had promising potential in the enrichment and analysis of detrimental organic pollutants from water.

Removal of anionic dyes (Reactive Black 5 and Congo Red) from aqueous solutions using Banana Peel Powder as an adsorbent

The adsorption characteristics of Reactive Black 5 (RB5) and Cong Red (CR) onto Banana Peel Powder (BPP) from aqueous solution were investigated as a function of pH, contact time, initial dye concentration and temperature. The BPP was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis. FTIR results revealed that hydroxyl (-OH), amine (-NH) and carboxyl (-C˭O) functional groups present on the surface of BPP. The SEM results show that BPP has an irregular and porous surface morphology which is adequate for dye adsorption. The equilibrium data were analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Experimental results were best represented by the Langmuir isotherm model. The adjustments of models were confirmed by the Chi-square (χ²) test and the correlation coefficients (R²). The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of RB5 and CR on BPP calculated from Langmuir isotherm model were 49.2 and 164.6mg/g at pH 3.0 and 298K. Experimental data were also tested in terms of adsorption kinetics using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The results showed that the adsorption processes of both RB5 and CR followed well pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The calculated thermodynamic parameters ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS° showed that the adsorption of RB5 and CR onto BPP was feasible, spontaneous and endothermic in the temperature range 298-318K. The RB5 and CR were desorbed from BPP using 0.1M NaOH. The recovery for both anionic dyes was found to be higher than 90%. Based on these it can be concluded that BPP can be used as an effective, low cost, and eco-friendly adsorbent for CR removal than RB5 from aqueous solution.

Synthesis of polyaniline–magnetite nanocomposites using swollen liquid crystal templates for magnetically separable dye adsorbent applications

One dimensional iron oxide–polyaniline core–shell nanostructures enable faster adsorption of dyes and separation of the adsorbent using an external magnet.

Comparative photocatalytic activity of sol–gel derived rare earth metal (La, Nd, Sm and Dy)-doped ZnO photocatalysts for degradation of dyes

Rare earth metal doping into semiconductor oxides is considered to be an effective approach to enhance photocatalytic activity due to its ability to retard the electron–hole pair recombination upon excitation. Herein, we report the synthesis of different rare earth metal (La, Nd, Sm and Dy)-doped ZnO nanoparticles using a facile sol–gel route followed by evaluation of their photocatalytic activity by studying the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RhB) under UV-light irradiation. Different standard analytical techniques were employed to investigate the microscopic structure and physiochemical properties of the prepared samples. The formation of the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO was established by XRD and TEM analyses. In addition, the incorporation of rare earth metal into ZnO is confirmed by the shift of XRD planes towards lower theta values. All metal doped ZnO showed improved photocatalytic activity toward the degradation of MB, of which, Nd-doped ZnO showed the best activity with 98% degradation efficiency. In addition, mineralization of the dye was also observed, indicating 68% TOC removal in 180 min with Nd-doped ZnO nanoparticles. The influence of different operational parameters on the photodegradation of MB was also investigated and discussed in detail. Additionally, a possible photocatalytic mechanism for degradation of MB over Nd-doped ZnO nanoparticles has been proposed and involvement of hydroxyl radicals as reactive species is elucidated by radical trapping experiments.

Study on adsorption of methylene blue by a novel composite material of TiO2 and alum sludge

A composite material of TiO₂ and alum sludge (TiO₂@AS) is reported in this paper. The samples of alum sludge (AS) and TiO₂@AS were characterized using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and an Ultima IV X-ray diffractometer (XRD). In order to study the adsorption capacity and the adsorption mechanism of methylene blue by TiO₂@AS in aqueous solution, three indexes — pH, adsorbent dosage and initial concentration of methylene blue — were investigated to evaluate the adsorption capacity of TiO₂@AS. Moreover, thermodynamic, kinetic and isothermal model analyses of the adsorption process were carried out. The results showed that pH has little effect on the adsorption capacity. The maximum adsorption efficiency occurred at an optimized pH value of 11 for the aqueous solution. The adsorbed amount of methylene blue on TiO₂@AS increased with the initial concentration of adsorbate and decreased with an increase in TiO₂@AS dosage. The adsorption kinetics of methylene blue by TiO₂@AS were in good agreement with the quasi-second-order kinetic model (R² ≥ 0.9964), indicating that chemisorption is the main rate-controlling step. The Freundlich isotherm equation can best describe the experimental data (R² = 0.9788). It is revealed that the adsorption is mainly multilayer adsorption. Because ΔG < 0 and ΔH > 0, the adsorption is a spontaneous endothermic process. Furthermore, the TiO₂@AS can be regenerated under ultraviolet light, thus prolonging the service life of AS and facilitating a solution to the problem of adsorption plugging.

Biosorption of chromium(VI) in aqueous solutions by chemically modified Strychnine tree fruit shell

Chromium(VI) was removed from aqueous solution using sulfuric- and phosphoric-acid-activated Strychnine tree fruit shells (SSTFS and PSTFS) as biosorbents. Effects of various parameters such as adsorbent dose (0.02-0.1 g/L), temperature (303-333 K), agitation speed, solution pH (2-9), contact time, and initial Cr(VI) concentration (50-250 mg/L) were studied for a batch adsorption system. The optimum pH range for Cr(VI) adsorption was determined as 2. Equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed with isotherm models and the Langmuir and Freundlich models got best fitted values for SSTFS (R² value - 0.994) and PSTFS (R² value - 0.996), respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of SSTFS and PSTFS were 100 and 142.85 mg/g, respectively. The biosorption process was well explained by pseudo-second-order kinetic model with higher R² value (SSTFS - 0.996, PSTFS - 0.990) for both biosorbents. Characterization of biosorbents was done using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, elemental analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. Thermodynamic studies revealed the spontaneous, endothermic, and randomness in nature of the Cr(VI) adsorption process. Different concentrations of NaOH solutions were used to perform the desorption studies. The results demonstrated that both SSTFS and PSTFS can be used as an effective and low-cost biosorbent for removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions.

Crystallinity and lowering band gap induced visible light photocatalytic activity of TiO2/CS (Chitosan) nanocomposites

The inhibition of electrons-holes recombination and enhancement of visible light photocatalytic activity were accomplished by the synthesized TiO₂/CS nanocomposites system. In this present work, the different weight ratio of TiO₂ and chitosan (75:25, 50:50 and 25:75) nanocomposites were synthesized via two-step method. After that, the existing functional groups, size and structure of the nanocomposites system were characterized via FT-IR, TEM and XRD measurements. The band gap of the prepared materials and its excitation and emission spectra were elevated through UV-vis and PL analyses. Moreover, the MO and MB degradation capability of the synthesized TiO₂/CS nanocomposites was optimized, and the outcomes are described in detail.
