Chiral selection on inorganic crystalline surfaces

Enantiospecific adsorption of amino acids on hydroxylated quartz (0001)

Density functional theory calculations have been used to study the adsorption of glycine, alanine, serine, and cysteine on the hydroxylated (0001) surface of alpha-quartz. We found negligible differences in adsorption energies for the most stable minima of enantiomers of alanine on this surface. There are, however, measurable energy differences between the two enantiomers of both serine and cysteine in their most stable states. The source of this enantiospecificity is mainly the difference in the strength of hydrogen bonds between the surface and the two enantiomers. Our results provide initial information on how amino acids can exhibit enantiospecific adsorption on hydroxylated quartz surfaces.

Chiral assembly from achiral rod-coil molecules triggered by compression at the air-water interface

A series of achiral rod-coil molecules consisting of an oligo(p-phenylene) conjugated rod with a poly(ethylene oxide) or poly(propylene oxide) coil laterally attached through an imidazole linkage were synthesized, and their interfacial behaviors were investigated. Compounds 1a and 1b have a similar surface behavior with a shoulder indicating a transformation of rod segments from flat-on to vertical orientation. Interestingly, CD and AFM suggest chiral films are formed when the LB films were deposited after the shoulder. Although compound 1c shows different surface behavior because the PEO chains dissolved into water upon compression, macroscopic chirality was also detected. In contrast, compound 2, based on a reduced conformational rigidity of the aromatic rod segment, does not form chiral assemblies. Combining the data collected, the cooperative interaction of the hydrogen bond between the molecules and pi-pi stacking as well as the steric constraint between the aromatic rod segments are responsible for the macroscopic chirality. Such kind of stacking can be realized through a molecular design and a lateral compression. A deep insight into the relationship between the molecular structure and the chirality was gained.

Surface stress of stepped chiral metal surfaces

The use of surface stress as a physical probe for examining chiral effects in surfaces is proposed. First-principles calculations of the surface stress in stepped achiral and chiral bcc metal surfaces (Fe, Mo, and W) are presented. When no mirror symmetry is present, principal stress orientations are unconstrained; nevertheless, we find that the stress is smoothly varying along a suitably chosen stereographic zone of surfaces. Stress ellipses for Fe differ qualitatively from those of Mo and W, suggesting that its surface stress has a distinct origin.

Postsynthetic modification of gold nanoparticles with calix[4]arene enantiomers: origin of chiral surface plasmon resonance

Gold nanoparticles postsynthetically modified with chiral 1,3-disubstituted diamino calix[4]arene ligands 2a and 2b are shown to exhibit a circular dichroism (CD)-active surface plasmon resonance absorption (SPR) band. Electronic communication between adsorbed ligand and the gold nanoparticle surface is evidenced in an almost 10-fold increase in the ligand molar ellipticity in the pi-pi* transition spectral range when bound to the gold surface relative to free solution. The footprint of ligand on the gold nanoparticle surface at saturation is measured to be 91 A(2) via monitoring the red shift in the SPR band accompanying ligand adsorption. At ligand concentrations above that required for surface saturation, the ellipticity of the band in the SPR spectral range plateaus to a constant value, whereas the ellipticity of the band in the pi-pi* transition spectral range continues to increase in a manner that corresponds to free ligand in solution. This critical observation correlates ligand adsorption and the onset of the CD-active SPR band. On the basis of the packing characteristics of the bulky calixarene ligand, which are controlled by achiral tert-butyl groups, and the postsynthetic nature of nanoaprticle surface modification of 4.7 nm gold cores used in this study, which precludes synthesis of chiral arrangements of gold atoms, a mechanism responsible for the CD-active SPR bands is proposed, which is based upon the influence of the asymmetric center of the chiral adsorbate on the electronic states of the metal nanoparticle core-an explanation supported by the observed interactions between the gold surface and adsorbed ligand.

Monte Carlo modeling of chiral adsorption on nanostructured chiral surfaces and slit pores

Adsorptive separation of chiral molecules is a powerful technique that has long been used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. An important challenge in this field is to design and optimize new adsorbents to provide selective discrimination of enantiomers. In this article, we introduce an off-lattice model of chiral adsorption on nanostructured surfaces and slit pores with the aim of predicting their enantioslective properties. The concept presented here involves finding the optimal chiral pattern of active sites on the pore walls that maximizes the difference between the binding energies of the enantiomers. Our initial effort focuses on chiral molecules that do not have specific interactions with the pore surface. One candidate meeting this requirement is 1,2-dimethylcyclopropane (DMCP), a chiral hydrocarbon whose interaction with a model pore surface was described using the Lennard-Jones potential. To model the adsorption of DMCP, we used the Monte Carlo simulation method. It was demonstrated that the separation of the enantiomers of DMCP is hardly obtainable because of the smoothness of the potential energy surface for molecules physisorbed in the pore. However, the simulated results allowed the identification of key factors that influence the binding of the enantiomers of DMCP to the pore walls with a special distribution of active sites. This information will be useful in future considerations of the adsorption of more complex chiral molecules.

The first contribution of capillary electrophoresis to the study of abiotic origins of homochirality: investigation of the enantioselective adsorption of 3-carboxy adipic acid on minerals

CE with UV detection was used for the first time to determine the enantioselective adsorption of the short-chain tricarboxylic acid, 3-carboxy adipic acid, on minerals as a mean of investigating plausible mechanisms for the origin of biochemical homochirality on Earth. The use of vancomycine as chiral selector in the separation buffer using the partial filling technique enabled the separation of the two enantiomers of this organic acid in about 12 min. Taking into account that this compound has a low absorption of the UV light, and in order to achieve the sensitivity needed to determine the enantiomeric excess of samples of 3-carboxy adipic acid adsorbed on minerals, we applied a strategy consisting of a field-amplified sample stacking together with the use of a bubble capillary and detection at low wavelength (192 nm). This combination enabled an LOD of about 10(-7) M and the determination of the enantiomeric excess of 3-carboxy adipic acid adsorbed on calcite and feldspar mineral samples at subnanomol levels of this acid. Results showed that an enantioselective adsorption of the enantiomers of 3-carboxy adipic acid on minerals took place.

Direction specific interactions of 1,4-dicarboxylic acid with calcite surfaces

Interactions of succinic acid (SUC) with the {104} cleavage faces of calcite show a strong preference in crystallographic directions. In situ atomic force microscopy revealed that the morphology of etch pits on the crystal surfaces experienced a transition from the common rhombus to a hexagon upon the introduction of SUC. The pit shape further evolved from 6-sided to 7-sided and eventually to 5-sided with increasing concentrations of SUC. Analysis indicates that the morphology changes may result from SUC preferentially binding to the [42] and [010] edges of the (104) plane to selectively slow down their step speed.

Enantioselective crystallization of histidine on chiral self-assembled films of cysteine

In this paper, the preparation and use of chiral surfaces derived from enantiomerically pure crystals of amino acids are described. For this purpose, a self-assembly process to grow thin chiral films of (+)-L- or (-)-D-cysteine on gold surfaces was chosen. These chiral films were utilized as crystallization catalysts in the crystallization of enantiomers from solutions. To demonstrate the chiral discrimination power of the chiral surfaces in crystallization processes, the crystallization of racemic histidine onto the chiral films was investigated. Our study demonstrates the potential application of chiral films to control chirality throughout crystallization, where one enantiomer crystallizes onto the chiral surfaces with relative high enantiomeric excess. In addition, crystallization of pure histidine enantiomers onto chiral films results in strong crystal morphology modification with preferred orientation.

Stereospecific morphogenesis of aspartic acid helical crystals through molecular recognition

Helical morphologies were generated from aspartic acid (Asp) crystals in agar gel matrix. The morphogenesis stereospecifically proceeded in the helical crystal growth: D- and L-Asp provided left- and right-handed structures, respectively. The backbone of the helical morphology was twisted twins of tilted unit crystals, as was the case with inorganic helical crystals. The molecular recognition between the Asp crystals and agar matrix molecules resulted in the stereospecific morphogenesis. The chirality in Asp and agar molecules, the enantiomorph of unit crystals, and the resultant macroscopic helix were exquisitely associated with each other.

Probing enantioselectivity with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory

The enantioselectivity of gold is investigated by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT). Cysteine molecules on a chiral Au(17 11 9);{S} surface show enantiospecific core level binding energies in the amino and in the thiol group. The sign and order of magnitude of the XPS core level shifts is reproduced by DFT. Identical preparations of D- and L-cysteine layers lead to D-cysteine molecules in the pure NH2 form, while a small portion of L-cysteine molecules maintains a hydrogen rich amino group (NH3). This implies enantiospecific adsorption reaction pathways and is consistent with DFT that indicates an activated hydrogen abstraction reaction from the amino group, which is downhill for D-cysteine.

Intrinsic asymmetries of amino acid enantiomers and their peptides: A possible role in the origin of biochirality

L-amino acids and D-carbohydrates were incorporated into the first forms of life over 3.5 billion years ago, presumably from racemic mixtures of organic solutes produced by abiotic synthetic pathways. The process by which this choice occurred has not been established, but a consensus view is that it was a chance event, such that life could equally well have used D-amino acids and L sugars. In this review we will explore a second, less plausible alternative that minute differences in the physical properties of certain enantiomers made it more likely that L-amino acids and D-carbohydrates would be incorporated into early life. By all classical criteria, chiral isomers are perfect mirror image structures and, therefore, are expected to be identical in their macroscopic properties. However, scattered reports in the literature suggest that there may be slight differences in the physical properties of L- and D-amino acids and their polymers, which could lead to a preferred incorporation of L-amino acids into primitive forms of life. Here we present a literature survey of this issue and discuss its possible role in the origin of biochirality.

Sub-micrometer polarimetry of chiral surfaces using near-field scanning optical microscopy

In this work we have studied the optical activity of chiral crystal surfaces with polarized near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM); our studies clearly demonstrated that polarized NSOM can be utilized to determine chirality at crystal surfaces.

Chiral crystallization of glutamic acid on self assembled films of cysteine

In this article, we describe the preparation and use of chiral surfaces derived from enantiomerically pure crystals of amino acids. For this purpose, we chose to employ a self-assembly process to grow nanoscale chiral films of (+)-L or (-)-D cysteine, onto gold surfaces. We utilized those chiral films as resolving auxiliaries in the crystallization of enantiomers from solutions. To demonstrate the chiral discriminating ability of the chiral surfaces in crystallization processes, we investigated the crystallization of rac-glutamic acid onto the chiral films. Our study demonstrates the potential application of chiral films to control chirality throughout crystallization, where one enantiomer crystallizes on the chiral surfaces with relatively high enantiomeric excess. In addition, crystallization of pure glutamic acid enantiomers, and its racemic compound on to chiral films resulted in crystal morphology modification with preferred crystal orientation, which assists in the interpretation of the ability of our chiral surfaces to function as chiral selectors.

Definitely life but not definitively

Although there have been attempts at a definition of life from many disciplines, none is accepted by all as definitive. Some people believe that it is impossible to define 'life' adequately at the moment. We agree with this point of view on linguistic grounds, examining the different types of definition, the contexts in which they are used and their relative usefulness as aids to arriving at a scientific definition of life. We look at some of the more recent definitions and analyse them in the light of our criteria for a good definition. We argue that since there are so many linguistic and philosophical difficulties with such a definition of life, what is needed is a series of working descriptions, which are suited to the audience and context in which they are used and useful for the intended purpose. We provide some ideas and examples of the forms these may take.

Structures of dense glycine and alanine adlayers on chiral Cu(3,1,17) surfaces

Density Functional Theory calculations have been used to predict the structures of dense glycine and alanine adlayers on Cu(3,1,17)(S). Facets of this chiral Cu surface result from adsorbate-induced surface reconstruction when glycine or alanine are adsorbed and annealed on Cu(100). We have calculated the surface energy changes associated with this surface reconstruction. Our results allow the enantiospecificity of this reconstruction following adsorption of enantiopure or racemic alanine on Cu(100) to be discussed. The overall stability of glycine and alanine adlayers on Cu(3,1,17)(S) arises from an interplay between the formation of chemical bonds with the Cu surface, deformations in the adsorbed molecules during adsorption, and intermolecular hydrogen bonds within the adlayer; none of these factors individually dominates.

With a grain of salt: what halite has to offer to discussions on the origin of life

This experimental study investigated how the dynamics of the crystallization of the evaporite mineral halite could affect the accumulation and preservation of organic macromolecules present in the crystallizing solution. Halite was grown under controlled conditions in the presence of polymer nanoparticles that acted as an analog to protocellular material. Optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and laser scanning confocal fluorescence microscopy were used to trace the localization of the nanoparticles during and after growth of halite crystals. The present study revealed that the organic nanoparticles were not regularly incorporated within the halite, but were very concentrated on its surfaces. Their distribution was controlled dominantly by the morphologic surface features of the mineral rather than by specific molecular interactions with an atomic plane of the mineral. This means that the distribution of organic molecules was controlled by surfaces like those of halite's evaporitic growth forms. The experiments with halite also demonstrated that a mineral need not continuously incorporate organic molecules during its crystallization to preserve those molecules: After rejection by (non-incorporation into) the crystallizing halite, the organic nanoparticles increased in concentration in the evaporating brine. They ultimately either adsorbed in rectilinear patterns onto the hopper-enhanced surfaces and along discontinuities within the crystals, or they were encapsulated within fluid inclusions. Of additional importance in origin-of-life considerations is the fact that halite in the natural environment rapidly can change its role from that of a protective repository (in the absence of water) to that of a source of organic particles (as soon as water is present) when the mineral dissolves.

Chiral Templating of Surfaces: Adsorption of (S)-2-Methylbutanoic Acid on Pt(111) Single-Crystal Surfaces

The adsorption and thermal chemistry of (S)-(+)-2-methylbutanoic acid ((S)-2MBA) on Pt(111) single-crystal surfaces was characterized by using temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and reflection-adsorption infrared (RAIRS) spectroscopies. Particular emphasis was placed on the characterization of the chiral superstructures formed upon the deposition of the submonolayer coverages of enantiopure (S)-2-methylbutanoate species that are produced by thermal dehydrogenation of the (S)-2MBA. The enantioselectivity of the empty platinum sites left open on those structures were identified by their difference in behavior toward the adsorption of the two enantiomers of propylene oxide. It was found that a significant enhancement in adsorption is possible on surfaces with the same chirality of the probe molecule, specifically that the uptake of (S)-propylene oxide is larger than that of (R)-propylene oxide on (S)-2-methylbutanoate adsorbed layers. This contrasts with the lack of enantioselectivity previously reported for the same adsorbate on Pd(111). Detectable differences in adsorption energetics of (R)- vs (S)-propylene oxide on the (S)-2-methylbutanoate/Pt(111) overlayers were measured but deemed not to be the controlling factor in the enantioselectivity reported in this system.

Enantiospecific adsorption of cysteine at chiral kink sites on Au(110)-(1 x 2)

Enantiospecific adsorption of cysteine molecules onto chiral kink sites on the Au(110)-(1x2) surface was observed by scanning tunneling microscopy. l- and d-cysteine dimers were found to adopt distinctly different adsorption geometries at S kinks, which can be understood from the need to reach specific, optimum molecule-substrate interaction points. Extended, homochiral domains of l/d-cysteine were furthermore observed to grow preferentially from R/S kinks. The results constitute the first direct, microscopic observation of enantiospecific molecular interaction with chiral sites on a metal single-crystal surface.
