Spectroscopic details on the molecular structure of pyrimidine‑2‑thiones heterocyclic compounds: computational and antiviral activity against the main protease enzyme of SARS-CoV-2

Computational tools in investigating of spectral heterocyclic compounds ranges based on pyrimidine‑2‑thiones, take some importance in identifying their molecular and electronic behavior. Some charcoal heterocyclic compounds were previously synthesized in our laboratory and their experimental results were compared with the computational evaluation. Computational spectroscopic analytical items (IR, NMR and UV–Vis) were calculated using the more popular DFT methods and the predicted results were compared with the reported experimental ones. Quantum and chemical parameters were calculated and molecular electrostatic surface potential (MEP) was studied which predicted the highly electronic sites around the compounds. Some molecular properties (ionization energy, electron affinity, energy gap, hardness, electronegativity, electrophilicity index, static dipole moment and average linear polarizability) of these Schiff bases which were computed at B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level in aqueous phase. Benchmark analysis was performed for three ab initio functionals such B3LYP, BPV86 and B3PW91 methods to explain the data resulted from NMR spectra. The docking study of some selected previously synthesized compounds was performed using the viral Mpro enzyme protein in compared to a k36 reference ligand inhibitor. The study indicated the ability of the synthesized compounds to form H-bond and hydrophobic (VDW, π-alkyl and π-sulfur) interactions with Mpro enzyme receptor with high inhibition effect of compound L2.

The g-C3N4@CdO/ZnO ternary composite: photocatalysis, thermodynamics and acute toxicity studies

Binary and ternary nanocomposites (NCs) were synthesized by precipitation and through facile one-pot ultrasonic assisted methods to serve as photocatalysts for treatment of wastewater as well as their toxicity toward aquatic organism (Nile tilapia). The crystalline structure, band gap energy and functional groups of these materials were characterized by XRD, UV-Vis, and FT-IR instrumental techniques. Based on the UV-Vis study, the band gap of ZnO/CdO (ZC) to hybrid g-C₃N₄@ZnO/CdO (GZC) nanocomposite was reduced from 3.41 eV to 3.21 eV, suggesting good charge carrier mobility. Photocatalytic degradation performances of ZC and GZC were further assessed by conducting methyl red (MR) photodegradation reaction using UV light. The highest degradation efficiency was achieved for GZC NCs (97.78%) than ZC (89.41%) in 2 h. The values of free energy, and enthalpy were negative; showing spontaneous photodegradation of MR. The kinetics of photodegradation follows pseudo-first-order reaction with rate order of 0.0713 min⁻¹. The HO∗ and O₂∗ were main active species for the photodegradation of MR. The toxicity of NCs calculated and the lethal concentration (LC₅₀) was 113 ppm after 12 h.

Betulinic acid mitigates oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis and enhances longevity in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae model

Betulinic acid (BA), a pentacyclic triterpenoid found in certain plant species, has been reported to have several health benefits including antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties. However, the mechanism by which BA confers these properties is currently unknown. Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a budding yeast with a short life cycle and conserved cellular mechanism with high homology to humans, was used as a model for determining the role of BA in aging and programmed cell death (PCD). Treatment with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) exhibited significantly increased (30-35%) survivability of antioxidant (sod1Δ, sod2Δ, cta1Δ, ctt1Δ, and tsa1Δ) and anti-apoptotic (pep4Δ and fis1Δ) mutant strains when cells were pretreated with BA (30 µM) as demonstrated in spot and CFU (Colony forming units) assays. Measurement of intracellular oxidation level using the ROS-specific dye H₂DCF-DA showed that all tested BA-pretreated mutants exhibited decreased ROS than the control when exposed to H₂O₂. Similarly, when mutant strains were pretreated with BA and then exposed to H₂O₂, there was reduced lipid peroxidation as revealed by the reduced malondialdehyde content. Furthermore, BA-pretreated mutant cells showed significantly lower apoptotic activity by decreasing DNA/nuclear fragmentation and chromatin condensation under H₂O₂-induced stress as determined by DAPI and acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining. In addition, BA treatment also extended the life span of antioxidant and anti-apoptotic mutants by ∼10-25% by scavenging ROS and preventing apoptotic cell death. Our overall results suggest that BA extends the chronological life span of mutant strains lacking antioxidant and anti-apoptotic genes by lowering the impact of oxidative stress, ROS levels, and apoptotic activity. These properties of BA could be further explored for its use as a valuable nutraceutical.

The concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the coffee products: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Coffee is one of the most consumed products globally, and its contamination with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) occurs throughout the production chain and production. Therefore, the current meta-analysis study aimed to estimate the concentration of essential elements (Cu and Co) and the contamination of PTEs (Ni, Cr, Pb, As, and Cd) in coffee. The recommended databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect, were investigated to collect data regarding the contamination of PTEs in coffee products from 2010 to 2021. Among 644 retrieved citations in the identification step, 34 articles were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled mean concentration of essential elements in coffee products is much higher than that of toxic elements (Co (447.106 µg/kg, 95% CI: 445.695-448.518 µg/kg) > Ni (324.175 µg/kg, 95% CI: 322.072-326.278 µg/kg) > Cu (136.171 µg/kg, 95% CI: 134.840-137.503 µg/kg) > Cr (106.865 µg/kg, 95% CI: 105.309-108.421 µg/kg) > Pb (21.027 µg/kg, 95% CI: 20.824-21.231 µg/kg) > As (3.158 µg/kg, 95% CI: 3.097-3.219 µg/kg) > Cd (0.308 µg/kg; 95% CI: 0.284-0.332 µg/kg)). Results showed high differences between pooled concentrations of all PTEs in coffee products of different countries.

Spatio-temporal monitoring of potentially toxic elements in Lagos harbour water and its health risk implications

Continuous discharge of industrial and domestic inputs from various processes into the Lagos lagoon has significantly affected the quality of the aquatic environment, as a result of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) being released into the harbour during anthropogenic activities. This study involved monitoring the concentration and distribution of heavy metals in Lagos harbour during the dry and wet seasons. The PTEs can pose a serious ecological threat to the marine environment as well as human beings when the level of priority metals like cadmium, lead, and chromium is beyond World Health Organization (WHO) limits of 0.003, 0.05, and 0.1 mg/L, respectively. The shipping activities within the harbour play a significant role in the generation of these toxic metals. The diverse nature of these metals coexisting with their oxidation states in aquatic environments and their bioaccumulation influences the toxicity of PTEs towards the living organism. The quantification of these metals with highly selective and accurate instrumentation is imperative. Ion-selective exchangers and other functionalized composite nanomaterial are critical for harbour water remediation because of the high risk that could be associated with prolonged exposure to these toxic elements especially when the carcinogenic risk value is greater than 1 × 10−6 mg/kg/day.

Synchronous removal of ammonia nitrogen, phosphate, and calcium by heterotrophic nitrifying strain Pseudomonas sp. Y1 based on microbial induced calcium precipitation

Pseudomonas sp. Y1, a strain with superior synchronous removal ability of ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N), phosphate (PO₄^3--P), and calcium (Ca²⁺) was isolated, with the removal efficiencies of 92.04, 99.98, and 83.40 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) was degraded by 90.33 %. Through kinetic analysis, the optimal cultivated conditions for heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HNAD) and biomineralization were determined. The growth curves experimental results of different nitrogen sources indicated that strain Y1 could remove NH₄⁺-N through HNAD. The results of excitation-emission matrix (EEM) proved that the appearance of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) promoted the precipitation of phosphate minerals. Finally, the characterization results of the bioprecipitates showed that the HNAD process produced the alkalinity required for microbial induced calcium precipitation (MICP), resulting in the removal of PO₄^3- via adsorption and co-precipitation. This study provides a theoretical basis for the application of microorganisms to achieve synchronous nutrient removal and phosphorus recovery in wastewater.

Commercial pesticides for urban applications induced population growth and sub-cellular alterations in Raphidocelis subcapitata (Chlorophyceae) at concerning environmental concentrations

Information regarding the safety and environmental risks of pesticides intended for urban use remains limited. This study aimed to assess the effects of four common pesticides on the microalga Raphidocelis subcapitata: DIAZINON® 25% C. E., Roundup®, URBACIN® 20C. E., and VAPODEL® 20% C. E., which are commercial formulations of diazinon, glyphosate, dichlorvos, and cypermethrin, respectively. According to 96-h inhibition of population growth bioassays, the four pesticide toxicities exemplified the following order: DIAZINON® (diazinon) > Roundup® (glyphosate) > VAPODEL® (dichlorvos) > URBACIN® (cypermethrin). Increasing pesticide concentrations elicited alterations in the specific growth rates (µmax). The macromolecule contents and photosynthetic pigments increased in groups exposed to the highest concentrations of DIAZINON® 25%, Roundup®, and URBACIN® 20 compared to the control group, despite these treatments inducing lower population growth rates. VAPODEL® 20% induced higher growth rates and lower macromolecule content compared to the control. Since active ingredients were not quantified, certain comparisons may prove limiting, but it is important to assess the effects of the whole mixtures in the form that they enter the environment, especially for urban-intended applications or generic formulations with higher additive contents. Finally, this study demonstrated that commercial pesticide formulations designed for urban applications might pose a threat to freshwater microalgae due to their underestimated toxic potential, but further studies are required.

Aryl-Phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole: A Versatile Scaffold for the Design of Optical-Based Sensors

Fluorescent and colorimetric sensors are important tools for investigating the chemical compositions of different matrices, including foods, environmental samples, and water. The high sensitivity, low interference, and low detection limits of these sensors have inspired scientists to investigate this class of sensing molecules for ion and molecule detection. Several examples of fluorescent and colorimetric sensors have been described in the literature; this Review focuses particularly on phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazoles. Different strategies have been developed for obtaining phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazoles, which enable modification of their optical properties upon interaction with specific analytes. These sensing responses usually involve changes in the fluorescence intensity and/or color arising from processes like photoinduced electron transfer, intramolecular charge transfer, intramolecular proton transfer in the excited state, and Förster resonance energy transfer. In this Review, we categorized these sensors into two different groups: those bearing formyl groups and their derivatives and those based on other molecular groups. The different optical responses of phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole-based sensors upon interaction with specific analytes are discussed.

Three component synthesis of triazolo[1,2-a]indazole-trione and spiro triazolo[1,2-a]indazole-tetraones using GO/SiO2/Co (II)

In this study, a functionalized graphene oxide catalyst (GO/f-SiO₂/Co) was successfully synthesized by decorating the graphene oxide surface using the attachment of hybrid silane (silica/nitrogen) and chelation with Co (II). The catalyst has been characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectra, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Thermal Gravimetric (TGA) analyses. The synthesized catalyst was used as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of triazolo[1,2-a]indazole-trione and spiro triazolo[1,2-a]indazole-tetraones derivatives under solvent-free conditions at 90 °C. The high thermal stability, corrosion resistance, and ability of the catalyst to recycle make the catalyst favorable. In addition, easy work-up procedure and short reaction time with high conversion yields (91-97%) are some benefits of the current method.

Moroccan Medicinal Plants Used to Treat Cancer: Ethnomedicinal Study and Insights into Pharmacological Evidence

Cancer is one of the major medical challenges, with an unacceptably high death toll worldwide. In Morocco, medicinal plants continue to play a pivotal therapeutic role despite the development of modern sanitation systems. In the current study, an ethnobotanical survey was carried out at the Moroccan national institute of oncology, Rabat, and we aimed at (1) establishing an exhaustive inventory of indigenous knowledge of Moroccan medicinal plants used to manage cancer and (2) confirming the reported ethnopharmacological uses through bibliometric review. An ethnobotanical survey was conducted with 291 cancer patients at the Moroccan National Institute of Oncology, Rabat, during a period of 4 months, from February to May 2019, through semistructured interviews. Ethnobotanical indices, including informant consensus factor (FIC), use report (UR), relative frequency citation (RFC), botanical family use value (FUV), fidelity level (FL), and index of agreement on remedies (IAR), were employed in data analyses. The survey revealed that 39 medicinal plants belonging to 27 botanical families and 38 genera were used to treat cancer. The most used ethnospecies were Aristolochia longa with the highest RFC value (0.096), followed by Nigella sativa, Ephedra alata, Euphorbia resinifera, and Lavandula dentata, éwith RFC values of 0.072, 0.054, 0.044, and 0.044, respectively. In regard to the plant families, Lamiaceae contributed the highest number of plants with five species (FUV = 0.034), followed by Asteraceae (4 species; FUV = 0.020), and Fabaceae (4 species; FUV = 0.020). The leaves are the most popular plant part used by the studied population against cancer; otherwise, decoction was the most commonly used method for remedy preparation and the highest FIC was noticed for uterine cancer treatment (0.86). Considering these findings, further investigations into the recorded plant species should be performed to assess phytochemical constituents and pharmaceutical benefits in order to identify their active compounds for any drug formulations.

Mobile trace elements in sediments from lakes Hawassa, Koka, and Ziway in the Ethiopian Rift Valley

The present work focuses on total concentrations of trace elements such as chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) and their operationally defined speciation in surface sediments from three Ethiopian Rift Valley Lakes (Hawassa, Koka, and Ziway). Total concentrations were determined using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). A six-step sequential extraction was also applied to evaluate the mobilization potential of these elements. Compared with the consensus-based sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) developed for freshwater ecosystems, the total Zn concentration in sediments from Lakes Hawassa and Ziway, as well as Cr, Ni, and Zn in sediments from Lake Koka, was higher than the probable effect concentration (PEC), suggesting that these elements could have a negative effect on benthic organisms. The sequential extraction results showed that Cd, Mn, and Se were to a certain extent associated with the reversible fractions (F1-F3) in sediments, and thereby more mobile than the other investigated trace elements. Predictions of mobility of trace elements using the distribution coefficients (K_d) values were also in agreement with the sequential extraction results. Furthermore, multivariate statistical analyses showed that redox-sensitive fractions (F4 and F6) and the residual fraction (F7) were the dominant factors controlling most trace element mobility. Finally, applying the Risk Assessment Code (RAC) classification system, results showed that Mn in Lake Koka could pose a high risk, while Cd and Mn in Lake Hawassa as well as Cd, Mn, and Se in Lake Ziway sediments could pose medium risk to benthic organisms.

Synthesis of Gum Arabic Magnetic Nanoparticles for Adsorptive Removal of Ciprofloxacin: Equilibrium, Kinetic, Thermodynamics Studies, and Optimization by Response Surface Methodology

Given the increasing risks that antibiotic abuse poses to microecology and human health, it is imperative to develop incredibly powerful adsorbents. This study investigated the use of environmentally sustainable polymeric nanocomposite based on gum arabic (GA) and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) synthesized via co-precipitation method to form gum arabic magnetitic nanoparticles (GA-MNPs) as an efficient adsorbent for ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal from aqueous solution. The physicochemical properties and morphology of the synthesized GA-MNPs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX). The experiment was designed by response surface methodology (RSM) and the Central Composite Design (CCD) was utilized to optimize the operating variables: contact time (0–120 min), pH (3–10), adsorbent dosage (0.10–0.40 g/L), and concentration of adsorbate (5–100 mg/L). Results showed that 96.30% was the maximum percentage of CIP removed. The adsorption effect of the CIP molecule on the surface of the GA-MNPs was investigated using regression analysis and analysis of variance. Furthermore, Freundlich Isotherm and Pseudo Second order kinetic equations have the highest consistency with experimental investigations suggesting double-layer adsorption. This implies that chemisorption was the mechanism involved. In addition, the calculated thermodynamic parameters were postulating an exothermic and spontaneous method in nature. Owing to its adsorption selectivity and recyclability, GA-MNPs could be classified as an environmentally friendly, less expensive, and highly efficient promising adsorbent for remediation of CIP from aqueous solution.

The Difference of Volatile Compounds in Female and Male Buds of Trichosanthes anguina L. Based on HS-SPME-GC-MS and Multivariate Statistical Analysis

Trichosanthes anguina L. (family Cucurbitaceae) is a monoecious and diclinous plant that can be consumed as a vegetable and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The chemical composition and content of volatile compounds in female and male buds of T. anguina were explored by headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) technology combined with multivariate statistical analysis. The results showed that the content of the volatile compounds was different between female and male buds. 2,2,6-trimethyl-6-vinyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-3-ol and 2,2,6-trimethyl-6-vinyldihydro-2H-pyran-3(4H)-one were the main volatile compounds in both female and male buds. Based on the multivariate statistical analysis of orthogonal projections to latent structures discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) and t-test, the content of seven compounds was significantly different between female and male buds. The content of three compounds in male buds was higher than that in female, i.e., (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene, 1,5,9,9-tetramethyl-1,4,7-cycloundecatriene, and (E)-caryophyllene. Conversely, the content of (Z)-4-hexen-1-ol, (Z)-3-hexenyl benzoate, (Z)-3-hexenyl salicylate, and 2-hexen-1-ol in female buds was higher than that in male buds. This is the first report on the difference in the volatile compounds between female and male buds of T. anguina, which enriches the basic research on the monoecious and diclinous plant and provides a reference for the study of plant sex differentiation.

Zn(II) halide coordination compounds with imidazole and 2-methylimidazole. Structural and computational characterization of intermolecular interactions and disorder

Novel zinc(II) coordination compounds with imidazole (Im) and 2-methylimidazole (2-MeIm) were prepared and characterized: [ZnX₂(Im)₂] (X = Cl (1a), Br (1b), I (1c)) and [ZnX₂(2-MeIm)₂] (X = Cl (2a), Br (2b), I (2c)). Coordination compounds 1a–c were prepared mechanochemically by neat grinding while 2a–c were prepared by solution synthesis. The complexes were characterized by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy and by powder X-ray diffraction. Crystal and molecular structures were determined by the single crystal X-ray diffraction. The characteristic of all structures is a distorted tetrahedral coordination of zinc consisting of two halide atoms and two nitrogen atoms from the imidazole (or 2-methylimidazole) ligand. Molecules in 1a–c are interconnected by hydrogen bonds into 3D structures. Structures of 1b and 1c were found to have similar unit cells and similar crystal packing and hydrogen bonding. Introduction of the 2-methylimidazole substituent introduced disorder in the crystal structures of 2a–c. Because of the very small size of the crystals data were collected by synchrotron radiation. For the disordered 2a,2b and 2c fixed geometry was used in refining of the structures. Crystal structures of 2a–c are characterized by chains of molecules connected by hydrogen bonds of the type N–H⋅⋅⋅X, with weak π⋅⋅⋅π and van der Waals interactions between the chains. The QTAIM, RDG and NCI computational analysis of 1a and 2a–c confirmed the presence of weak attractive intermolecular interactions that can be attributed to weak N–H⋅⋅⋅X and van der Waals interactions.

Non-target bioactive compound profiles of coffee roasts and preparations

Coffee is an inherent part of our daily nutrition and seems to have protective effects against diseases, whereby it is often not fully understood, which ingredients are responsible for the observed effect. Hence, a non-targeted bioactivity profiling was developed to investigate 27 hand-filtered coffee brews of differently roasted coffee beans and 14 differently prepared and stored coffee brews. After separation, multi-imaging, and densitometry, six planar effect-directed assays were performed to reveal individual antioxidative, antibacterial, anti-cholinesterase, anti-diabetic, and estrogenic effects. Individual compounds were mainly responsible for the observed effects, e.g. 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid regarding antioxidative potential and α-glucosidase inhibition, while coffee brews made by a fully automated coffee machine showed the highest antioxidative potential. Unlike preparation and storage conditions, applied roasting conditions and origin of coffee samples played a less important role. Therefore, the way we daily consume our coffee has an impact on the magnitude of potential health effects.

Occurrence and health implications of heavy metals in preschool children's clothing manufactured in four Asian regions

Clothing may be a potential contributor to body metal burden in children. However, available information on heavy metals in children's clothing is extremely limited and the associated health risks remain poorly understood. This study investigated the concentrations of Pb, Cd, Co, Zn, Cr, As, Cu and Ni in new preschool children's clothing manufactured in four Asian regions. The children's clothing had higher levels of Ni and Cr but lower levels of Pb and Cd in comparison to the concentrations reported in other textile products. The concentrations of Cd were higher in the black clothing than those in the white and color samples. The non-cotton samples contained higher Co concentrations. The Pb concentrations in the samples manufactured in China were significantly higher than those in the other three regions. We estimated the dermal exposure doses for these metals and calculated the associated risks. The results indicated that the health risks from exposure to these metals in the children's clothing were acceptable. However, more research is required to investigate heavy metals and the associated risks in child clothing due to the increasing complexity of their materials and manufacturing processes.

Distribution of metals in water, sediment and fish tissue. Consequences for human health risks due to fish consumption in Lake Hawassa, Ethiopia

Water pollution may be a serious environmental problem for Lake Hawassa, an important fishing and recreational site as well as a drinking-water source in Ethiopia. The present study aims at determining the distribution of metals and metalloids in the lake's water, sediment and fish tissues and assessing the resulting human health and ecological risks. Metals were detected in both abiotic and biotic samples. In water, only the Hg concentration was significantly different among sampling sites. The average concentration of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in water were below the environmental quality thresholds, thus not having potentially adverse effect on aquatic life. In sediment, significant differences in metals concentration among sites were found for As, Cd, Pb, Co, Zn and Hg (p < 0.05). Exceedances of As, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni and Zn were found in sediment, with Cr, Ni and Zn above the probable effect concentration and being potentially toxic to aquatic life. Fish stored more metals in their liver than in their muscle. The concentration of metals in carnivorous fish (Barbus intermedius) was not higher in muscle and liver than those in herbivores fish (Oreochromis niloticus). The Bioaccumulation Factor of Cr in all fish species muscle was >1. The Biota-Sediment Accumulation Factor of all metals in all fish species muscle were <1. Positive correlations among metals in water and correlations among metals in sediment were found, indicating a potential common pollution source. Positive correlation of total organic carbon with Cd, Co and Se and clay content with Pb, As and Hg was found and may imply that metals are easily adsorbed by the organic matter and fine sediment. With respect to the measured metals no potential health risk due to consumption of fish from Lake Hawassa was observed.

Recent Advances in the Use of CoPc-MWCNTs Nanocomposites as Electrochemical Sensing Materials

Cobalt phthalocyanine multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CoPc-MWCNTs), a nanocomposite, are extraordinary electrochemical sensing materials. This material has attracted growing interest owing to its unique physicochemical properties. A study on green synthesis, characterization of chromium oxide nanoparticles and their enzyme inhibitory potential

The conventional chemical methods of nanoparticles synthesis have been effectively replaced by nanoparticle synthesis mediated by plants. The current study describes the environmental friendly synthesis of chromium oxide nanoparticles (Cr₂O₃ NPs) using Erythrophleum guineense plant extract. The synthesis of Cr₂O₃ NPs was validated by UV/VIS spectroscopy, Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. The appearance of the Sharpe peak at 460 nm in the UV/Vis spectrum and the colour change caused by surface plasma resonance confirmed the formation of Cr₂O₃ NPs. The EDX spectrum of Cr₂O₃ nanoparticles revealed the presence of carbon, oxygen, and chromium, while SEM analysis revealed an irregular round morphology (with a size below 400 nm). In addition, XRD studies suggested their crystalline nature by the characteristic peaks at 34° and 36° and 42° (2Ɵ), respectively. The green synthesized Cr₂O₃ NPs showed promise as in-vitro cholinesterase inhibitor at tested concentrations (62.5–1,000 μg/ml), with IC₅₀ values of 120 and 100 μg/ml against Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), respectively. The results suggested that the green synthesized Cr₂O₃ NPs could be used in the future to stop enzyme from working and for other biological activities.

Choosing appropriate measures and developing successful strategies for eliminating hazardous wastewater contaminants from industrial processes is currently a primary goal. Electroplating industry wastewater involves highly toxic cyanide (CN), heavy metal ions, oils and greases, organic solvents, and the complicated composition of effluents and may also contain biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), SS, DS, TS, and turbidity. The availability of these metal ions in electroplating industry wastewater makes the water so toxic and corrosive. Because these heavy metals are harmful to living things, they must be removed to prevent them from being absorbed by plants, animals, and humans. As a result, exposure to electroplating wastewater can induce necrosis and nephritis in humans and lung cancer, digestive system cancer, anemia, hepatitis, and maxillary sinus cancer with prolonged exposure. For the safe discharge of electroplating industry effluents, appropriate wastewater treatment has to be provided. This article examines and assesses new approaches such as coagulation and flocculation, chemical precipitation, ion exchange, membrane filtration, adsorption, electrochemical treatment, and advanced oxidation process (AOP) for treating the electroplating industry wastewater. On the other hand, these physicochemical approaches have significant drawbacks, including a high initial investment and operating cost due to costly chemical reagents, the production of metal complexes sludge that needs additional treatment, and a long recovery process. At the same time, advanced techniques such as electrochemical treatment can remove various kinds of organic and inorganic contaminants such as BOD, COD, and heavy metals. The electrochemical treatment process has several advantages over traditional technologies, including complete removal of persistent organic pollutants, environmental friendliness, ease of integration with other conventional technologies, less sludge production, high separation, and shorter residence time. The effectiveness of the electrochemical treatment process depends on various parameters, including pH, electrode material, operation time, electrode gap, and current density. This review mainly emphasizes the removal of heavy metals and another pollutant such as CN from electroplating discharge. This paper will be helpful in the selection of efficient techniques for treatment based on the quantity and characteristics of the effluent produced.

Antiproliferative Activity of (-)-Isopulegol-based 1,3-Oxazine, 1,3-Thiazine and 2,4-Diaminopyrimidine Derivatives

A series of novel heterocyclic structures, namely 1,3-oxazines, 1,3-thiazines and 2,4-diaminopyrimidines, were designed and synthesised. The bioassay tests demonstrated that, among these analogues, 2,4-diaminopyridine derivatives showed significant antiproliferative activity against different human cancer cell lines (A2780, SiHa, HeLa, MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231). Pyrimidines substituted with N2 -(p-trifluoromethyl)aniline, in particular, displayed a potent inhibitory effect on the growth of cancer cells. Structure-activity relationships were also studied from the aspects of stereochemistry on the aminodiol moiety as well as exploring the effects of substituents on the pyrimidine scaffold.
