Abstract
The association between vaccines and ocular disorders has attracted significant attention in scientific research. Numerous mainstream vaccines are associated with a range of uveitis types, including anterior, intermediate, and posterior uveitis. Additionally, they are associated with distinct ocular diseases such as multifocal choroiditis, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease, acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy (APMPPE), and multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS). These ocular conditions are often transient, with a vast majority of patients experiencing improvement after steroid intervention. To date, numerous cases of vaccine-induced uveitis have been reported. This study analyzed the correlation between antiviral vaccines, including the hepatitis B virus (HBV), human papillomavirus (HPV), measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), varicella zoster virus (VZV), and influenza vaccines, and different manifestations of uveitis. This is the first comprehensive study to offer a detailed analysis of uveitis types induced by antiviral vaccines. Through an extensive database search, we found a particularly strong link between influenza vaccines, followed by VZV and HPV vaccines. While anterior uveitis is common, conditions such as APMPPE, MEWDS, and VKH are particularly notable and merit careful consideration in clinical practice. Corticosteroid treatment was effective; however, half of the observed patients did not achieve full recovery, indicating potentially prolonged effects of the vaccine.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe herpetic ocular infections following SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations. METHODS A retrospective study of herpetic ocular infections after BNT162b2mRNA vaccination and a literature review. RESULTS A cohort of five patients: three varicella zoster virus (VZV) and two herpes simplex virus (HSV) cases, as well as 19 literature cases: 9 cases of VZV and 10 cases of HSV post BNT162b2mRNA, AZD1222, mRNA-1273, and CoronaVac vaccinations. All cases presented within 28 days post vaccination. Most VZV and HSV cases (15/19) reported in the literature presented post first vaccine dose, while in our cohort 2 VZV cases presented post second dose and both HSV cases and one VZV case post third dose. The most common presentations were HZO with ocular involvement and HSV keratitis. All eyes had complete resolution; however, one had retinal detachment and three corneal scars. CONCLUSION Herpetic ocular infections may develop shortly after SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations. Overall, the outcome is good.

Abstract
Many viral infections can affect vision and the visual system. Vaccination to prevent diseases is commonplace today, acting by stimulating an immune response without developing the pathology. It involves the production of persisting antibodies against the pathogen and the activation of T cells. Certain diseases have already been eradicated by rigorous vaccination campaigns, while others are hoped to be eliminated soon. Vaccines currently available on the market are largely safe, even if they can rarely cause some adverse effects, such as ocular complications. Analyzing existing literature, we aimed to compare the pathological effects on the eye due to the most common viral infections [in particular varicella zoster virus (VZV), measles virus, influenza viruses, hepatitis B virus, and SARS-CoV-2] with the possible ocular adverse effects of their relative vaccines, in order to establish a risk-benefit relationship from an ophthalmological point of view.

Abstract
PURPOSE To report a four-case series of ocular adverse events post an inactivated COVID-19 vaccination in China. METHODS The four patients exhibited ocular inflammatory reactions on the same day after receiving an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. RESULTS All patients underwent detailed ophthalmic examinations, with the medical diagnosis of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada, Ponser-Schlossman, secondary post-inflammatory glaucoma, and iridocyclitis, respectively. No patients had any other underlying medical conditions causing the ocular complications. The ocular inflammatory reactions of these four patients were resolved with the administration of oral or topical corticosteroids. CONCLUSION Our cases remind the ophthalmologist that adverse ocular events may happen after the administration of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Since the ocular complications could be resolved with the corticosteroid treatment, the events were considered to be inflammatory reactions caused by the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine.

Abstract
The Food and Drug Administration has licensed, approved, and expanded guidelines for dozens of vaccines since 2010. Although advancements in biotechnology have made vaccines more effective and safer, none are completely free from adverse effects. Many vaccines have been implicated in causing ocular adverse events based on the temporal association of exposure and putative complication. Determination of causality is difficult. We provide an overview of vaccine side effects and also examine the English literature and the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) from 2010 through 2020 for vaccine-implicated ocular adverse events. While reactions of eyelids and conjunctiva are commonly reported, the most frequently implicated serious adverse events are optic neuritis and various patterns of intraocular inflammation. Live attenuated vaccines have the potential to cause ocular infection from vaccine-strain organisms, particularly in those immunosuppressed. While postmarketing registries for suspect vaccination adverse events, such as VAERS, are unable to determine causal associations, they are a mainstay in signaling suspected trends that require investigation. The majority of probable and possible serious ocular adverse effects are distinctly uncommon.

Abstract
Les infections virales peuvent toucher l’ensemble des tuniques oculaires et mettre en jeu la fonction visuelle à plus ou moins courte terme. Les kératites et kérato-uvéites liées au virus HSV-1 sont les atteintes les plus fréquentes. Les récurrences entraînent une opacification cornéenne irréversible qui en fait la première cause de cécité d’origine infectieuse dans les pays occidentaux, et justifient un traitement antiviral préventif au long cours. Le zona ophtalmique (10 à 20 % des zonas), peut s’accompagner d’atteintes oculaires sévères (kératites, kérato-uvéites), dont 30 % deviennent chroniques/récurrentes, et de douleurs post-zostériennes, redoutables dans le territoire trigéminé. Les rétinites nécrosantes liées aux herpesvirus (HSV, VZV, CMV), sont rares mais constituent des urgences fonctionnelles absolues nécessitant un traitement antiviral par voie intraveineuse et intravitréenne. Les conjonctivites à adénovirus constituent la première cause de conjonctivite infectieuse. Le plus souvent bénignes, elles sont extrêmement contagieuses et peuvent se compliquer de lésions cornéennes invalidantes persistant plusieurs mois, voire années. Certaines arboviroses s’accompagnent de manifestations oculaires inflammatoires. Dans le cas du Zika, les infections congénitales peuvent se compliquer d’atrophie maculaire et/ou optique. Les conjonctivites sont très fréquentes à la phase aiguë de la maladie à virus Ebola, dont 15 % des survivants présentent des atteintes inflammatoires chroniques sévères liées à la persistance du virus dans les tissus uvéaux. Enfin, dans le cadre de la COVID-19, les conjonctivites ne sont pas très fréquentes mais peuvent être inaugurales, voire au premier plan et sont associées à une excrétion virale lacrymale qui doit faire prendre toutes les précautions.

Abstract
Neurotrophic keratopathy (NK) is a degenerative corneal disease caused by damage of trigeminal innervation. This leads to epithelial defects, ulceration and, eventually, perforation. Both herpes simplex and varicella zoster keratitis are reported to be the main causes of NK. Furthermore, prognosis in this type of NK is poor. Classic clinical findings in post-herpes NK are spontaneous epithelial breakdown, round and central epithelial defects with smooth edges, stromal melting and thinning, scarring, and neovascularisation. Although several medical and surgical treatments have been reported, no therapies are currently available to definitely restore corneal sensitivity. Therefore, NK remains a challenging disease to treat. In this review a summary is presented of the pathogenesis, manifestations, and current management of post-herpes NK. The role of antiviral treatment and varicella-zoster vaccination is also discussed. A description is also presented on both medical and surgical novel therapies, such as regenerative drugs and corneal neurotization.

Abstract
PURPOSE We present a case of reactivated herpes zoster keratouveitis of 6 years duration with corneal perforation requiring penetrating keratoplasty shortly after inoculation with herpes zoster vaccine (Zostavax, Merck, Quebec, Canada). METHODS Retrospective case report. RESULTS A 67-year-old woman with a 5-year history of recurrent unilateral herpes zoster keratouveitis in her right eye presented with another recurrence 2 weeks after Zostavax vaccination. Three months later, she developed descemetocele and 2 months afterward, corneal perforation, which was managed by penetrating keratoplasty. Immunohistopathological examination disclosed positive staining for varicella zoster virus in most of the keratocytes adjacent to the descemetocele and perforation, most vividly in the deeper two-thirds of the stroma where the keratocytes were most dense, but not in corneal epithelium or endothelium. Electron microscopic examination showed universally severely degenerated corneal keratocytes in the corneal stroma adjacent to the perforation with variable numbers of herpes virus capsids present in half of these cells. Only a rare normal-appearing keratocyte was identified in the more peripheral corneal stroma. CONCLUSIONS We present a case of reactivation of herpes keratouveitis shortly after vaccination with Zostavax in a patient with previous herpes zoster ophthalmicus. We demonstrate, for the first time, ultrastructural evidence consistent with inactive virus capsids in diffusely degenerated keratocytes in the extracted corneal tissue.

Abstract
Vaccinations are very effective measures for prevention of infections but are also associated with a long list of possible side effects. Adverse ocular effects following vaccination have been rarely reported or considered to be related to vaccinations. Conjunctivitis is a frequent sequel of various vaccinations. Oculorespiratory syndrome and serum sickness syndrome are considered to be related to influenza vaccinations. The risk of reactivation or initiation of autoimmune diseases (e. g. uveitis) cannot be excluded but has not yet been proven. Overall the benefit of vaccination outweighs the possible but very low risk of ocular side effects.

INTRODUCTION Drug-induced uveitis is a well described but often overlooked and/or misdiagnosed adverse reaction to medication. There are an increasing number of medications that have been related to the onset of intraocular inflammation. Identification of these inciting agents may decisively help the diagnostic algorithm involving new cases of uveitis. AREAS COVERED This review intends to be an updated comprehensive, practical guide for practitioners regarding the main drugs that have been associated with uveitis. A classification proposed by Naranjo et al. in 1981 for establishing potential causality is applied examining possible mechanisms of action. A guide for clinicians about the rationale of these observations when dealing with patients with uveitis is provided. EXPERT OPINION Several agents with different routes of administration (systemic, topical and/or intraocular) may cause intraocular inflammation. The mechanism behind ocular inflammation is frequently unknown. Clinicians should be aware of the potential drug effect to optimize diagnosis and management of such patients.

Abstract
The herpes zoster vaccine is made using high doses of live attenuated varicella/zoster virus. The vaccine is well tolerated and has few adverse effects: the most common one is pain at the injection site. Complications can occur mainly in persons who had prior zoster keratitis or uveitis. The vaccine can prevent this disease with low mortality but high morbidity.
