Abstract
Exploring the relationship between thermal expansion and structural complexity is a challenging topic in the study of modern materials where volume stability is required. This work reports a new family of negative thermal expansion (NTE) materials, AM(CN)4 with A = Li and Na and M = B, Al, Ga, and In. Here, the compounds of LiB(CN)4 and NaB(CN)4 were only synthesized; others were purely computationally studied. A critical role of nonrigid vibrational modes and spiral acoustical modes has been identified in NaB(CN)4. This understanding has been exploited to design the colossal NTE materials of NaM(CN)4 (M = Al, Ga, In). A joint study involving synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations has been conducted to investigate the thermal expansion mechanism. It has been found that the A atoms can either increase the symmetry of the crystal structure, inducing stronger NTE, or lower the crystal symmetry, thus resulting in positive thermal expansion. Conversely, the M-site atoms do not affect the crystal structure. However, as the radius of the M atoms increases, the ionic nature of the C-M bonds strengthens and the CN vibrations become more flexible, thereby enhancing the NTE behavior. This study provides new insights to aid in the discovery and design of novel NTE materials and the control of thermal expansion.

Abstract
Negative thermal expansion (NTE) is crucial for controlling the thermomechanical properties of functional materials, albeit being relatively rare. This study reports a giant NTE (αV ∼-9.2 ⋅ 10-5 K-1 , 100-200 K; αV ∼-3.7 ⋅ 10-5 K-1 , 200-650 K) observed in NaB(CN)4 , showcasing interesting ultralight properties. A comprehensive investigation involving synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations has been conducted to explore the thermal expansion mechanism. The findings indicate that the low-frequency phonon modes play a primary role in NTE, and non-rigid vibration modes with most negative Grüneisen parameters are the key contributing factor to the giant NTE observed in NaB(CN)4 . This work presents a new material with giant NTE and ultralight mass density, providing insights for the understanding and design of novel NTE materials.

Abstract
Nickel(II) cyanoborates Ni[BH2(CN)2]2·H2O (1b·H2O), Ni[BH(CN)3]2·0.5H2O (1c·0.5H2O), and Ni[B(CN)4]2·0.5H2O (1d·0.5H2O) were synthesized, and their reactivity with respect to dppeO2 (=1,2-bis-(diphenylphosphinoethane dioxide)), pyNO (=pyridine-N-oxide), dppe (=1,2-bis-(diphenylphosphinoethane), and DMSO (=dimethyl sulfoxide) was examined. Using these ligands, either cyanoborate (CB) complex salts of [Ni(dppe)2]2+ (2b-d) and [Ni(pyNO)6]2+ (3c-d) were isolated or complexes [Ni(DMSO)4{NC-B(CN)3}2] (1dDMSO) and [Ni(dppeO2)2{NC-B(CN)3}2] (1ddppeO2) were formed. Salt metathesis of [Ni(dppe)Cl2] with alkali metal cyanoborates resulted in mono- and disubstituted coordination compounds [Ni(dppe){NC-BH(CN)2}Cl] (5c) and [Ni(dppe){NC-BH2CN)2}] (4b), which decomposed to salts 2b-d. The synthetical pathways explored offer convenient routes to nickel(II) cyanoborates, nickel(II) complexes ligated with cyanoborates, and nickel(II) complex salts of cyanoborates. Further, our studies demonstrate the diverse character of cyanoborates in coordination chemistry as noncoordinating counteranions and also as medium coordinating anions forming novel transition-metal complexes and salts.

Abstract
Acid-base properties are the simplest expression of compounds' coordinating ability. In the present work, we studied in silico how the gas-phase Brønsted acidity (GA) of several polycyano-substituted compounds change when cyano (CN) groups are replaced by 1,2,2-tricyanovinyl (TCNV) groups in (iso)cyanic acid, dicyanoamine, cyanoform, and hydrogen tetracyanoborate. Different tautomers and conformers/isomers are included in this study. Gas-phase acidity values are compared with the acidities of various acids, including percyanated protonated monocarba-closo-dodecaborate (carborane acid) and dodecaborate, as well as hydrogen cyanide and 1,2,2-tricyanoethene. An estimation of acetonitrile (MeCN), dimethylsufoxide (DMSO), and 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) acidities is presented using the COSMO-RS method and correlation analysis. The strongest acid with four TCNV groups shows remarkable acidic properties.

Abstract
A set of mixed-substituted potassium alkylcyano- and alkylcyanofluoroborates has been synthesized using easily accessible starting compounds and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR and vibrational spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. In addition, single-crystal structures of salts of the cyanoborate anions have been derived from X-ray diffraction experiments. The 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium room temperature ionic liquids ([EMIm]+ -RTILs) with the new borate anions have been synthesized and their physicochemical properties, that is, high thermal and electrochemical stability, low viscosity, and high conductivity, have been compared to the properties of related [EMIm]+ -RTILs. The influence of the different alkyl substituents at boron has been assessed. The exemplary study on the properties with the [EMIm]+ -ILs with the mixed water stable alkylcyanoborate anions points towards the potential of these fluorine-free borate anions, in general.

Abstract
Steric and electronic effects play a very important role in chemistry, as these effects influence the shape and reactivity of molecules. Herein, an easy-to-perform approach to assess and quantify steric properties of Lewis acids with differently substituted Lewis acidic centers is reported. This model applies the concept of the percent buried volume (%V Bur) to fluoride adducts of Lewis acids, as many fluoride adducts are crystallographically characterized and are frequently calculated to judge fluoride ion affinities (FIAs). Thus, data such as cartesian coordinates are often easily available. A list of 240 Lewis acids together with topographic steric maps and cartesian coordinates of an oriented molecule suitable for the SambVca 2.1 web application is provided, together with different FIA values taken from the literature. Diagrams of %V Bur as a scale for steric demand vs. FIA as a scale for Lewis acidity provide valuable information about stereo-electronic properties of Lewis acids and an excellent evaluation of steric and electronic features of the Lewis acid under consideration. Furthermore, a novel LAB-Rep model (Lewis acid/base repulsion model) is introduced, which judges steric repulsion in Lewis acid/base pairs and helps to predict if an arbitrary pair of Lewis acid and Lewis base can form an adduct with respect to their steric properties. The reliability of this model was evaluated in four selected case studies, which demonstrate the versatility of this model. For this purpose, a user-friendly Excel spreadsheet was developed and is provided in the ESI, which works with listed buried volumes of Lewis acids %V Bur_LA and of Lewis bases %V Bur_LB, and no results from experimental crystal structures or quantum chemical calculations are necessary to evaluate steric repulsion in these Lewis acid/base pairs.

Abstract
The synthesis and detailed characterization of low-viscosity room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and [BnPh3P]+ salts with the cyano(fluoro)borate anions [BF(CN)3]- (MFB), [BF2(CN)2]- (DFB), and [BF3(CN)]- as well as the new mixed-substituted anion [BFH(CN)2]- (FHB) is described. The RTILs with [EMIm]+ or [BMPL]+ as countercations were obtained in yields of up to 98% from readily available alkali metal salts and in high purities that allow application in electrochemical devices. Trends in thermal stability, melting and freezing behavior, density, electrochemical stability, dynamic viscosity, specific conductivity and ion diffusivity have been assessed and compared to those of the related tetracyanoborate- and cyano(hydrido)borate-RTILs. The crystal structure analysis of the [BnPh3P]+ salts of [BFn(CN)4-n]- (n = 0-4), [BHn(CN)4-n]- (n = 1-3) and [BFH(CN)2]- provided experimental access to anion volumina that together with ion molecular mass, electrostatic potential, shape and chemical stability have been correlated to physicochemical properties. In addition, the cytotoxicity of the [EMIm]+-ILs and potassium or sodium salts was studied.

Abstract
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a commonly used steady-state technique to examine the internal resistance of electron-transfer processes in solar cell devices, and the results are directly related to the photovoltaic performance. In this study, EIS was performed to study the effects of accelerated ageing, aiming for insights into the degradation mechanisms of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) containing cobalt tris(bipyridine) complexes as redox mediators. Control experiments based on aged electrolytes differing in concentrations of the redox couple components and cation co-additives were conducted to reveal the correlation of the cell degradation with external and internal properties. The failure modes of the cells emerged as changes in the kinetics of charge- and ion-transfer processes. An insufficient concentration of the redox complexes, in particular Co(III), was found to be the main reason for the inferior performance after ageing. The related characterization of electrolytes aged outside the solar cell devices confirms the loss of active Co(III) complexes in the device electrolytes. A new EIS feature at low frequencies emerged during ageing and was analysed. The new EIS feature demonstrates the presence of an unexpected rate-limiting, charge-transfer process in aged devices, which can be attributed to the TiO2/electrolyte interface. High-resolution fluorescence detected X-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS) was performed to identify the reduction of a part of Co(III) to Co(II) after ageing, by investigating the Co K absorption edge. The HERFD-XAS data suggested a partial reduction of Co(III) to Co(II), accompanied by a difference in symmetry of the reduced species.

Abstract
The 1-methyl-3-(tricyanoborane)imidazolin-2-ylidenate anion (2) was obtained in high yield by deprotonation of the B(CN)3 -methylimidazole adduct 1. Regarding charge and stereo-electronic properties, anion 2 closes the gap between well-known neutral NHCs and the ditopic dianionic NHC, the 1,3-bis(tricyanoborane)imidazolin-2-ylidenate dianion (IIb). The influence of the number of N-bonded tricyanoborane moieties on the σ-donating and π-accepting properties of NHCs was assessed by quantum chemical calculations and verified by experimental data on 2, IIb, and 1,3-dimethylimidazolin-2-ylidene (IMe, IIa). Therefore NHC 2, which acts as a ditopic ligand via the carbene center and the cyano groups, was reacted with alkyl iodides, selenium, and [Ni(CO)4 ] yielding alkylated imidazoles 3 and 4, the anionic selenium adduct 5, and the anionic nickel tricarbonyl complex 8, respectively. The results of this study prove that charge, number of coordination sites, buried volume (%Vbur ) and σ-donor and π-acceptor abilities of NHCs can be effectively fine-tuned via the number of tricyanoborane substituents.

Abstract
Abstract
A metathesis reaction employing Ag[C(CN)3] and TlBr yielded the expected target compound Tl[C(CN)3] from aqueous solution, but after its structural and Raman-spectroscopic characterization, it became clear rather unexpectedly, that the title compound does not crystallize isotypically to any of the heavy alkali-metal tricyanomethanides. Tl[C(CN)3] adopts the space group R32 with the trigonal cell parameters a = 806.03(6) and c = 709.86(5) pm exhibiting a crystal structure still related to the one of the also trigonally crystallizing compounds A[C(CN)3] (A = Rb and Cs; space group:
R
3
‾
c
$R\overline{3}c$
) with doubled c-axes, which display distorted octahedrally coordinated A
+ cations. In Tl[C(CN)3], the Tl+ cations show a trigonal-prismatic coordination sphere with the terminal nitrogen atoms of six tricyanomethanide anions. There is also a long-distance capping of the triangular faces by two tricyanomethanide anions with their central carbon atoms at longer distance (d(Tl–N) = 299 pm; d(Tl⋯C) = 355 pm). Due to these bonding patterns, the tricyanomethanide unit in Tl[C(CN)3] is found to have the smallest volume increment of all [C(CN)3]– anions reported so far. A synopsis of the crystal structures and Raman spectra of all reported tricyanomethanides A[C(CN)3] with monocations (A = Li–Cs, Cu, Ag and Tl) is given. According to quantum-chemical calculations, the central carbon atom within the Y-aromatic π-electron system of the [C(CN)3]– anion and the lone pair at the Tl+ cation are assembled to a one-dimensional string along [001] via Kramers-Anderson super-exchange with equidistant atoms (d(Tl⋯C) = 355 pm), which might be addressed as an undistorted Peierls chain.

Abstract
Ethyl-, vinyl- and ethynyltricyano and dicyanofluoroborates were prepared on a gram scale from commercially available potassium trifluoroborates and trimethylsilylcyanide. Salt metathesis resulted in the corresponding EMIm-salts that are hydrophobic room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). The new RTILs exhibit unprecedented large electrochemical windows in combination with high thermal stabilities, low dynamic viscosities and high specific conductivities. These properties make them promising materials, especially for electrochemical applications.

Abstract
The 1,3-bis(tricyanoborane)imidazolate anion 1 was obtained in high yield from lithium imidazolate and B(CN)3 -pyridine adduct. Anion 1 is chemically very robust and thus allowed the isolation of the corresponding H5 O2 + salt. Furthermore, monoanion 1 served as starting species for the novel dianionic N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC), 1,3-bis(tricyanoborane)imidazoline-2-ylidenate anion 3 that acts as ditopic ligand via the carbene center and the cyano groups at boron. First reactions of this new NHC 3 with methyl iodide, elemental selenium, and [Ni(CO)4 ] led to the methylated imidazolate ion 4, the dianionic selenium adduct 5, and the dianionic nickel tricarbonyl complex 6. These NHC derivatives provide a first insight into the electronic and steric properties of the dianionic NHC 3. Especially the combination of properties, such as double negative charge, different coordination sites, large buried volume and good σ-donor and π-acceptor ability, make NHC 3 a unique and promising ligand and building block.

Abstract
Different types of high-yield, easily scalable syntheses for cyano(fluoro)borates Kt[BFn (CN)4-n ] (n=0-2) (Kt=cation), which are versatile building blocks for materials applications and chemical synthesis, have been developed. Tetrafluoroborates react with trimethylsilyl cyanide in the presence of metal-free Brønsted or Lewis acid catalysts under unprecedentedly mild conditions to give tricyanofluoroborates or tetracyanoborates. Analogously, pentafluoroethyltrifluoroborates are converted into pentafluoroethyltricyanoborates. Boron trifluoride etherate, alkali metal salts, and trimethylsilyl cyanide selectively yield dicyanodifluoroborates or tricyanofluoroborates. Fluorination of cyanohydridoborates is the third reaction type that includes direct fluorination with, for example, elemental fluorine, stepwise halogenation/fluorination reactions, and electrochemical fluorination (ECF) according to the Simons process. In addition, fluorination of [BH(CN)2 {OC(O)Et}]- to result in [BF(CN)2 {OC(O)Et}]- is described.

Abstract
Boron's unique position in the Periodic Table, that is, at the apex of the line separating metals and nonmetals, makes it highly versatile in chemical reactions and applications. Contemporary demand for renewable and clean energy as well as energy-efficient products has seen boron playing key roles in energy-related research, such as 1) activating and synthesizing energy-rich small molecules, 2) storing chemical and electrical energy, and 3) converting electrical energy into light. These applications are fundamentally associated with boron's unique characteristics, such as its electron-deficiency and the availability of an unoccupied p orbital, which allow the formation of a myriad of compounds with a wide range of chemical and physical properties. For example, boron's ability to achieve a full octet of electrons with four covalent bonds and a negative charge has led to the synthesis of a wide variety of borate anions of high chemical and electrochemical stability-in particular, weakly coordinating anions. This Review summarizes recent advances in the study of boron compounds for energy-related processes and applications.

Abstract
Exploring isotropic negative thermal expansion (NTE) compounds is interesting, but remains challenging. Here, a new concept of "average atomic volume" is proposed to find new NTE open-framework materials. According to this guidance, two NTE compounds, AgB(CN)4 and CuB(CN)4, have been discovered, of which AgB(CN)4 exhibits a large NTE over a wide temperature range (αv = -40 × 10-6 K-1, 100-600 K). The analysis by extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and first-principles calculation indicate that (i) the NTE driving force comes from the transverse vibrations of bridge chain atoms of C and N, corresponding to the low-frequency phonon modes; and (ii) the same transverse vibration direction of C and N atoms is a key factor for the occurrence of strong NTE in AgB(CN)4. The present concept of "average atomic volume" can be a simple parameter to explore new NTE compounds especially in those open-framework materials.

Abstract
In recent years, salts of the hydridotricyanoborate anion [BH(CN)3]- (MHB) have become readily available. In spite of the unusually high stability of the MHB anion, it can be used as a valuable starting material for the preparation of selected tricyanoborates, for example, the boron-centered nucleophile B(CN)32-. A further unprecedented example is the hydroxytricyanoborate anion [B(OH)(CN)3]- that is accessible by oxidation of (H3O)MHB with elemental bromine in water. The Brønsted acid (H3O)[B(OH)(CN)3] was isolated as a crystalline solid. It serves as a versatile starting material for the synthesis of coordination compounds, metal salts, and ionic liquids. The [B(OH)(CN)3]- anion shows a rich coordination chemistry and a high tendency to form hydrogen-bonded motifs as demonstrated by a series of salts with different types of cations. Furthermore, the [B(OH)(CN)3]- anion itself serves as starting material for new tricyanoborates such as the unusual trianion [B{OB(CN)3}3]3- and the silylated anions [B(OSiR3)(CN)3]- (R = Me, Et, Ph). Some of these follow-up products have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, e.g., [nBu4N]3[B{OB(CN)3}3] and [nBu4N][B(OSiPh3)(CN)3].

Abstract
This Review gives a comprehensive overview of the most topical weakly coordinating anions (WCAs) and contains information on WCA design, stability, and applications. As an update to the 2004 review, developments in common classes of WCA are included. Methods for the incorporation of WCAs into a given system are discussed and advice given on how to best choose a method for the introduction of a particular WCA. A series of starting materials for a large number of WCA precursors and references are tabulated as a useful resource when looking for procedures to prepare WCAs. Furthermore, a collection of scales that allow the performance of a WCA, or its underlying Lewis acid, to be judged is collated with some advice on how to use them. The examples chosen to illustrate WCA developments are taken from a broad selection of topics where WCAs play a role. In addition a section focusing on transition metal and catalysis applications as well as supporting electrolytes is also included.

Abstract
Several coordination polymers of silver(i)-pentacyanocyclopentadienide (PCC) were studied by X-ray diffraction to examine the effects of different solvents on supramolecular isomerism of the PCC-ligand. While alcohols yield supramolecular isomers of [Ag(PCC)] without coordination of solvent molecules, less polar solvents show coordinate binding. The influence of solvent polarity can be observed by a gradual change in the lattice structure featuring distinct motifs.

Abstract
The potassium perfluoroalkyltricyanoborates K[Cn F2 n+1 B(CN)3 ] [n=1 (1 d), 2 (2 d)] and the potassium mono(perfluoroalkyl)cyanofluoroborates K[Cn F2 n+1 BF(CN)2 ] [n=1 (1 c), 2 (2 c)] and [Cn F2 n+1 BF2 (CN)]- [n=1 (1 b), 2 (2 b), 3 (3 b), 4 (4 b)] are accessible with perfect selectivities on multi-gram scales starting from K[Cn F2 n+1 BF3 ] and Me3 SiCN. The K+ salts are starting materials for the preparation of salts with organic cations, for example, [EMIm]+ (EMIm=1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium). These [EMIm]+ salts are hydrophobic room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) that are thermally, chemically and electrochemically very robust, offering electrochemical windows up to 5.8 V. The RTILs described herein, exhibit very low viscosities with a minimum of 14.0 mPa s at 20 °C for [EMIm]1 c, low melting points down to -57 °C for [EMIm]2 b and extraordinary high conductivities up to 17.6 mS cm-1 at 20 °C for [EMIm]1 c. The combination of these properties makes these ILs promising materials for electrochemical devices as exemplified by the application of selected RTILs as component of electrolytes in dye-sensitised solar cells (DSSCs, Grätzel cells). The efficiency of the DSSCs was found to increase with a decreasing viscosity of the neat ionic liquid. In addition to the spectroscopic characterisation, single crystals of the potassium salts of the anions 1 b-d, 2 d, 3 b and 4 c as well as of [nBu4 N]2 c have been studied by X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
Vibrational spectroscopy has continued use as a powerful tool to characterize ionic liquids since the literature on room temperature molten salts experienced the rapid increase in number of publications in the 1990's. In the past years, infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopies have provided insights on ionic interactions and the resulting liquid structure in ionic liquids. A large body of information is now available concerning vibrational spectra of ionic liquids made of many different combinations of anions and cations, but reviews on this literature are scarce. This review is an attempt at filling this gap. Some basic care needed while recording IR or Raman spectra of ionic liquids is explained. We have reviewed the conceptual basis of theoretical frameworks which have been used to interpret vibrational spectra of ionic liquids, helping the reader to distinguish the scope of application of different methods of calculation. Vibrational frequencies observed in IR and Raman spectra of ionic liquids based on different anions and cations are discussed and eventual disagreements between different sources are critically reviewed. The aim is that the reader can use this information while assigning vibrational spectra of an ionic liquid containing another particular combination of anions and cations. Different applications of IR and Raman spectroscopies are given for both pure ionic liquids and solutions. Further issues addressed in this review are the intermolecular vibrations that are more directly probed by the low-frequency range of IR and Raman spectra and the applications of vibrational spectroscopy in studying phase transitions of ionic liquids.
