Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to reveal the efficacy and safety of antivirals in patients with Ramsay Hunt syndrome. METHODS A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Ichushi-Web, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Published randomized controlled trials and observational studies, which compared antivirals versus placebo/no treatment for Ramsay Hunt syndrome, were included in the meta-analysis. The primary outcome was non-recovery at the end of the study follow-up. Data was analyzed using Review Manager Software, and pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95 % CI were calculated. RESULTS Two randomized controlled trials and 7 cohort studies met the eligible criteria, and 474 individuals were included in the meta-analysis. The OR of antivirals for non-recovery was 0.68 (95 % CI 0.37-1.27, p = 0.22). In subgroup analysis, the OR were 0.48 (95 % CI 0.15-1.61, p = 0.24) in patients with antivirals monotherapy and 0.73 (95 % CI 0.34-1.57, p = 0.42) in patients treated with combination therapy of antivirals and systematic corticosteroid. CONCLUSION This systematic review first shows the effectiveness of antivirals. Further study is needed to confirm the efficacy of antivirals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to reveal the efficacy of physical therapy for patients with peripheral facial palsy. METHODS A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Ichushi-Web, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Published randomized controlled trials comparing the physical therapy versus placebo/non-treatment for peripheral facial palsy such as Bell's palsy, Ramsay Hunt syndrome, and traumatic facial palsy were included for meta-analysis. The primary outcome was non-recovery at the end of the follow-up. Non-recovery was defined according to the authors' definition. The secondary outcomes were the composite score of the Sunnybrook facial grading system and sequelae (presence of synkinesis or hemifacial spasm) at the end of the follow-up. Data was analyzed using Review Manager software and pooled risk ratio (RR) or mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. RESULTS Seven randomized controlled trials met the eligible criteria. The data on non-recovery from four studies was obtained and included 418 participants in the meta-analysis. Physical therapy might reduce non-recovery (RR = 0.51 [95% CI = 0.31-0.83], low quality). Pooling the data of composite score of the Sunnybrook facial grading system from three studies (166 participants) revealed that physical therapy might increase the composite scores (MD = 12.1 [95% CI = 3.11-21.0], low quality). Moreover, we obtained data on sequelae from two articles (179 participants). The evidence was very uncertain about the effect of physical therapy on reduction of sequelae (RR = 0.64 [95% CI = 0.07-5.95], very low quality). CONCLUSION The evidence suggested that physical therapy reduces non-recovery in patients with peripheral facial palsy and improves the composite score of the Sunnybrook facial grading system, whereas the efficacy of physical therapy in reducing sequelae remained uncertain. The included studies had high risk of bias, imprecision, or inconsistency; therefore, the certainty of evidence was low or very low. Further well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm its efficacy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to employ bibliometric approaches to assess the worldwide scientific achievements in acupuncture for facial paralysis research from 2013 to 2023, and explore the hotspots and frontiers. METHODS Articles related to acupuncture facial paralysis were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). CiteSpace was utilized to examine journals, publication year, country, institution, cited authors, as well as authors.Research hotspots and trends were analyzed by mapping co-citation networks and keywords. RESULTS The period from January 1, 2013, to July 31, 2023, yielded nearly 145 research records on acupuncture treatment for facial paralysis, with a steady increase in the number of annual publications.In terms of the number of publications, OTOLARYNGOLOGY HEAD NECK had the highest publication count, while AM J CHINESE MED exhibited the highest centrality and citation frequency among the cited journals. Further, 54.4 % of publications originated from China, followed by USA (8.2 %) and Germany (8.2 %). Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine stood out with the highest publication volume among institutions. Guntinas-lichius, Orlando was the most prolific author, and PEITERSEN E was the most cited author. The keywords "Randomized controlled trials" and "multicenter" displayed high frequency and centrality, indicating that clinical trials with a randomized controlled design and multicenter studies were prevalent research methods, likely to remain a future trend. CONCLUSION Acupuncture's potential in the treatment of facial paralysis merits further research. Authors from different countries/regions and organizations need to eliminate language and academic barriers and strengthen collaboration and communication. Current research hotspots focus on "brain", "nerve", "electrical stimulation", "RCT" and "guidelines". The study of acupuncture mechanisms, especially based on the central nervous system mechanism, may be the future research hotspot.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While the etiology of Bell's palsy (BP) is largely unknown, current evidence shows it may occur secondary to the immune response following a viral infection. Recently, BP has been reported as a clinical manifestation of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). OBJECTIVES To investigate an association between COVID-19 infection and BP. Additionally, to evaluate the need for COVID-19 testing in patients who present with BP. METHODS Hospital records of patients who presented to a single tertiary care center with BP in 2020 and 2021 were reviewed for presenting symptoms, demographics, COVID-19 infection and vaccination status. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference between patients with BP who had a positive or negative COVID test in terms of sex, BMI, age, race, smoking history or alcohol use. All 7 patients with BP and a positive COVID test were unvaccinated. Of the total cohort of 94 patients, 82 % were unvaccinated at the time of the study. None of the 17 patients who were vaccinated had a positive COVID test. A history of BP showed no statistical significance (10.3 % vs 14.3 %, p-value 0.73). CONCLUSION We discovered a limited cohort of patients who underwent COVID-19 testing at the time of presentation for BP. Though there have been recent studies suggesting a COVID-19 and BP, we were unable to clearly identify a relationship between COVID-19 and BP. Interestingly, all patients with facial paralysis and COVID-19 were unvaccinated. To further study this relationship, we recommend consideration of a COVID-19 test for any patient that presents with facial paralysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Facial palsy (FP) is defined as an injury of the seventh cranial nerve pair, partial or total, which can be classified as central or peripheral. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) is primarily used in the functional recovery of upper and lower limb conditions, however the technique has also been used for FP. OBJECTIVE To analyze the effect of PNF in the treatment of dysfunctions in FP. METHODS Ten databases including BVS, CENTRAL Cochrane, CINAHL, PEDro, PubMed, Scielo, ScienceDirect, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were comprehensively searched for dates prior to April 2021. Randomized controlled trials of PNF in individuals with dysfunctions caused by facial paralysis were eligible. Outcomes measures were recovery rate and clinical recovery, both measured by using the House Brackmann Scale. Recovery time was measured in days and synkinesis assessed with the Synkinesis Assessment Questionnaire. RESULTS A total of 184 patients were included. In general, the included studies have low methodological quality. None of the five studies used PNF as the sole intervention. In all of the included studies PNF was used in combination with other interventions. Our findings show very low evidence that PNF is more effective than minimal intervention for treating FP. CONCLUSION We conclude that given the limited number of studies included and the low methodological quality presented, recommendations based on these studies should be interpreted with caution. The effects of PNF on facial paralysis are not clear.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to reveal the efficacy and safety of intratympanic steroid therapy (ITST) in patients with Bell's palsy and Ramsay Hunt syndrome. METHODS A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Ichushi-Web, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Published randomized controlled trial and observational studies, which compared the combination of intratympanic corticosteroids with systemic corticosteroid versus systemic corticosteroid for Bell's palsy and Ramsay Hunt syndrome, were included for meta-analysis. The primary outcome was non-recovery at the end of the study follow-up. Data was analyzed using Review Manager software, and pooled odds ratio with 95% CI were calculated. RESULTS Three randomized controlled trial and two cohort studies met the eligible criteria, and 350 individuals included for meta-analysis. The timing of intratympanic corticosteroid was varied from once or twice a week to consecutive 10-days. Patients treated with combination of systemic corticosteroids and intratympanic corticosteroids were likely to achieve recovery of normal facial function (OR = 0.36 [95% CI 0.12-1.14]). The subgroup analysis of the timing revealed that daily ITST reduced non-recovery (OR = 0.14 [95% CI 0.04-0.50). However, non-daily ITST did not reduced non-recovery (OR 0.93 [95% CI 0.37-2.34]). CONCLUSION Intratympanic corticosteroid have a potential to reduce non-recovery in patients with Bell's palsy and Ramsay Hunt syndrome. The methods of intratympanic corticosteroid varied among included studies. Further well-designed randomized controlled trial is needed to confirm the effectiveness and to identify an adequate method of intratympanic corticosteroid in these patients.

The ratio of facial nerve to facial canal as an indicator of entrapment in Bell's palsy: A study by CT and MRI. Clin Neurol Neurosurg 2020; 198:106109. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To find out if the ratio of facial nerve to facial canal diameter plays any role in the etiopathogenesis and grade of Bell's palsy. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty-nine consecutive patients (16 females, 13 males) diagnosed with unilateral Bell's palsy were enrolled into the study. At admission, 5 patients were grade V, 11 were grade IV, 11 were grade III and 2 were grade II. The grade of Bell's palsy was documented by House-Brackmann facial nerve grading system at admission, 15th day, 1st month and 3th month. Temporal MRI and CT scans were obtained at the time of diagnosis. Diameter of facial nerve and facial canal at the middle of five different segments were measured equidistantly at the same workstation. Both sides of every patient (affected and unaffected) were measured by one radiologist who was not informed about the side of the paralysis. MRI and CT values of each segment were compared between affected and unaffected sides. In addition, FN/FC ratio of affected and non-affected sides was calculated and compared for each segment. We also analyzed if a relationship exists between above-mentioned measurements and the House-Brackmann grade. RESULTS Considering MRI values; statistically significant thickening of facial nerve between affected and unaffected sides was found at labyrinthine (p = 0.012), tympanic (p = 0.023) and geniculate parts (p = 0.04). Considering CT values; statistically significant difference between affected and unaffected sides was not found at any segment. Comparison of FN/FC ratio of both sides revealed statistically significant increment of the affected side at labyrinthine segment (p = 0.015) and geniculate ganglion (p = 0.032). We determined positive correlation between diameter of FN and HB grade at labyrinthine segment (p = 0.03, R = 0.531). On the other hand, we determined negative correlation between diameter of FC and HB grade at labyrinthine segment (p < 0.001, R = -318). A positive correlation between HB grade and FN/FC ratio was found only at the labyrinthine segment (p = 0.003, R = 0.673). CONCLUSION FN/FC ratio of labyrinthine segment and geniculate ganglion was found to be increased in patients with Bell's palsy. In addition, a positive correlation was determined between this ratio and grade of Bell's palsy particularly at labyrinthine segment. Basing the current study, if FN decompression is recommended in Bell's palsy patients with objective findings of bad prognosis, conservative surgery targeting the labyrinthine segment and geniculate ganglion alone might be safer.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Idiopathic facial nerve palsy (FNP) is an uncommon but important presentation in children, with Lyme disease known to be a common cause. The UK county of Hampshire is a high incidence area of Lyme disease. We conducted a retrospective review of the investigation and management of paediatric FNP at a large University hospital, including serologic testing and treatment of Lyme disease. METHODS We conducted a retrospective chart review of children under 18 presenting between January 1st, 2010 and December 31st, 2017 with a diagnosis of FNP. Patients with clear non-Lyme aetiology at presentation were excluded. Data was collected on demographics, initial presentation, investigations including Lyme serology, and management. RESULTS A total of 93 children were identified, with an even proportion of male to female and median age 9.3 years (IQR 4.6-12 years). A history of rash was present in 5.4%, tick bite in 14% and recent travel to, or residence in the New Forest in 22.6%. Lyme serology was performed in 81.7% of patients, of which 29% were positive. Antibiotics were prescribed for 73.1% of patients, oral steroids for 44% and aciclovir for 17.2%. CONCLUSION Lyme disease is a significant cause of FNP in this endemic area of the UK, and there was a large degree of variability in management prior to national guideline publication. Areas with endemic Lyme disease should consider introducing local guidelines supporting routine investigation and management for FNP, including empiric treatment for Lyme disease in accordance with NICE guidelines to improve care and reduce variability.

Abstract
Bell's palsy is the most common diagnosis associated with facial nerve weakness or paralysis. However, not all patients with facial paresis/paralysis have Bell's palsy. Other common causes include treatment of vestibular schwannoma, head and neck tumours, iatrogenic injuries, Herpes zoster, or trauma. The approach to each of these conditions varies widely. The purpose of this guideline is to provide clinicians with guidance on the treatment and monitoring of patients with different causes of facial paralysis. We intend to draft a practical guideline, focusing on operationalised recommendations deemed to be useful in the daily management of patients. This guideline was promoted by the Spanish Society of Otolaryngology and developed by a group of physicians with an interest in facial nerve disorders, including at least one physician from each Autonomous Community. In a question and answer format, it includes 56 relevant topics related to the facial nerve.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify presiding practices among neurotologists (ORL) in the care of acute Bell's palsy, and to compare them to neurologists' treatment patterns. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Cross-sectional survey study. SUBJECTS Neurotologists and neurologists. RESULTS Ninety-one responses to the survey were obtained. The majority of participants (87.9%) always prescribe steroids. ORL were more likely to prescribe higher doses (≥60 mg) than neurologists (89.7% vs. 58.0%) (p = 0.001). Anti-viral medication was initially prescribed by 46.2% of respondents (56.1% ORL vs. 38.0% neurologists; p = 0.085). An MRI was always ordered by 17 participants (18.7%), while an MRI was sometimes ordered by 45 participants (49.5%). ORL were not only more likely to always order an MRI (24.4% vs. 14.0%), but also more likely to never order an MRI (43.9% vs. 22.0%) (p = 0.009). Laboratory blood work was never ordered by 45.1% of respondents, with 70.7% of OTO and 24.0% of neurologists indicating that they would never order labs (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS ORL almost always prescribe steroids, prescribe antivirals around 50% of the time, and only sometimes obtain imaging for acute Bell's palsy. Compared to neurologists, ORL are more likely to order high dose steroids (≥60 mg), more commonly prescribe antivirals, and are less likely to order laboratory blood work. Regarding the treatment of acute Bell's palsy, there are discrepancies both within otolaryngology, and between otolaryngology and neurology, despite recently published guidelines from both specialties.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the clinical characteristics and factors affecting the prognosis of children with Bell palsy. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 53 pediatric patients diagnosed with Bell palsy. After a mean follow-up period of 30 days, 30 patients (56%) were completely recovered, 21 patients (40%) were partially recovered, and 2 patients (4%) had not recovered. The patients in the complete recovery group were significantly younger than those in the partial and nonrecovery groups (8.8 ± 4.2 years vs 12.2 ± 3.0 years, P = .003). Patients <8 years old had a higher complete recovery rate than was found in patients >8 years old (80% vs 47%, P = .031). Sex, affected side, and early or late treatment did not influence the recovery rate. These results suggest that younger age may be a good prognostic factor affecting the fast recovery of children with Bell palsy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Corticosteroids are widely used in the treatment of idiopathic facial paralysis (Bell's palsy), but the effectiveness of additional treatment with an antiviral agent is uncertain. This review was first published in 2001 and most recently updated in 2015. Since a significant benefit of corticosteroids for the early management of Bell's palsy has been demonstrated, the main focus of this update, as in the previous version, was to determine the effect of adding antivirals to corticosteroid treatment. We undertook this update to integrate additional evidence and to better assess the robustness of findings, taking risk of bias fully into account. OBJECTIVES To assess the effects of antiviral treatments alone or in combination with any other therapy for Bell's palsy. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Neuromuscular Specialised Register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, and LILACS in July 2019. We reviewed the bibliographies of the identified trials and contacted trial authors to identify additional published or unpublished data. We searched clinical trials registries for ongoing studies. SELECTION CRITERIA We considered randomised controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-RCTs of antivirals with and without corticosteroids versus control therapies for the treatment of Bell's palsy. We excluded trials that followed-up participants for less than three months. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS We independently assessed trials for relevance, eligibility, and risk of bias, using standard Cochrane procedures. We performed sensitivity analyses excluding trials at high or unclear risk of bias in at least five domains, and reported these data as the primary analyses. MAIN RESULTS Fourteen trials, including 2488 participants, met the inclusion criteria. Most were small, and most were at high or unclear risk of bias in multiple domains. We included four new studies at this update.Incomplete recoveryA combination of antivirals and corticosteroids may have little or no effect on rates of incomplete recovery in people with Bell's palsy compared to corticosteroids alone (risk ratio (RR) 0.81, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.38 to 1.74; 3 trials, N = 766; random-effects; low-certainty evidence). We excluded 10 trials that were at high or unclear risk of bias in several domains from this analysis and limited all analyses to studies at lower risk of bias. Recovery rates were better in participants receiving corticosteroids alone than antivirals alone (RR 2.69, 95% CI 0.73 to 10.01; 2 trials, N = 667; random-effects), but the result was imprecise and allowed for the possibility of no effect. The rate of incomplete recovery was lower with antivirals plus corticosteroids than with placebo or no treatment (RR 0.56, 95% CI 0.42 to 0.76; 2 trials, N = 658; random-effects). Antivirals alone had no clear effect on incomplete recovery rates compared with placebo, but the result was imprecise (RR 1.10, 95% CI 0.87 to 1.40; 2 trials, N = 658; fixed-effect). For people with severe Bell's palsy (House-Brackmann score of 5 and 6, or equivalent on other scales), we found that the combination of antivirals and corticosteroids had no clear effect on incomplete recovery at month six compared to corticosteroids alone, although the result was again imprecise (RR 0.82, 95% CI 0.57 to 1.17; 2 trials, N = 98; random-effects).Motor synkinesis or crocodile tearsAntivirals plus corticosteroids reduced the proportion of participants who experienced these long-term sequelae from Bell's palsy compared to placebo plus corticosteroids (RR 0.56, 95% CI 0.36 to 0.87; 2 trials, N = 469; fixed-effect; moderate-certainty evidence). Antivirals plus corticosteroids reduced long-term sequelae compared to placebo but there was no clear difference in this outcome with antivirals alone compared to placebo.Adverse events Adverse event data were available in four studies providing data on 1592 participants. None of the four comparisons showed clear differences in adverse events between treatment and comparison arms (very low-certainty evidence); for the comparison of antivirals plus corticosteroids and corticosteroids alone in studies at lower risk of bias, the RR was 1.17 (95% CI 0.81 to 1.69; 2 trials, N = 656; fixed-effect; very low-certainty evidence). AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS The combination of antivirals and corticosteroids may have little or no effect on rates of incomplete recovery in comparison to corticosteroids alone in Bell's palsy of various degrees of severity, or in people with severe Bell's palsy, but the results were very imprecise. Corticosteroids alone were probably more effective than antivirals alone and antivirals plus corticosteroids were more effective than placebo or no treatment. There was no clear benefit from antivirals alone over placebo.The combination of antivirals and corticosteroids probably reduced the late sequelae of Bell's palsy compared with corticosteroids alone. Studies also showed fewer episodes of long-term sequelae in corticosteroid-treated participants than antiviral-treated participants.We found no clear difference in adverse events from the use of antivirals compared with either placebo or corticosteroids, but the evidence is too uncertain for us to draw conclusions.An adequately powered RCT in people with Bell's palsy that compares different antiviral agents may be indicated.

Abstract
Acute facial paralysis (FP) describes acute onset of partial or complete weakness of the facial muscles innervated by the facial nerve. Acute FP occurs within a few hours to days. The differential diagnosis is broad; however, the most common cause is viral-associated Bell Palsy. A comprehensive history and physical examination are essential in arriving at a diagnosis. Medical treatment for acute FP depends on the specific diagnosis; however, corticosteroids and antiviral medications are the cornerstone of therapy. Lack of recovery after 4 months should prompt further diagnostic workup.

Abstract
Bell palsy and traumatic facial nerve injury are two common causes of acute facial palsy. Most patients with Bell palsy recover favorably with medical therapy alone. However, those with complete paralysis (House-Brackmann 6/6), greater than 90% degeneration on electroneurography, and absent electromyography activity may benefit from surgical decompression via a middle cranial fossa (MCF) approach. Patients with acute facial palsy from traumatic temporal bone fracture who meet these same criteria may be candidates for decompression via an MCF or translabyrinthine approach based on hearing status.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW There are many limitations to performing clinical research with high levels of evidence in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery (FPRS), such as randomization into surgical groups and sample size recruitment. Therefore, additional avenues for exploring research should be explored using big data, from databases to registries. Other organizations have developed these tools in the evolving landscape of outcomes measurement and value in healthcare, which may serve as models for our specialty. RECENT FINDINGS Over the last 5 years, FPRS literature of large-scale outcomes research, utilizing several administrative databases, has steadily grown. Our objectives are to describe key administrative databases, strengths and weaknesses of each, and identify recent FPRS publications utilizing big data. A registry with FPRS defined outcomes has the most potential. SUMMARY Although FPRS research has trended to a more evidence-based approach in the modern healthcare era, gaps persist. Several large administrative databases or registries can address voids in outcomes research within FPRS.

This version replaces an update of the review in Issue 7 of the Cochrane Library subsequently withdrawn because of an ongoing investigation into the reliability of data from an included study. OBJECTIVES To assess the effects of antiviral treatments alone or in combination with any other therapy for Bell's palsy. SEARCH METHODS On 7 October 2014 we searched the Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group Specialized Register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, DARE, NHS EED, and HTA. We also reviewed the bibliographies of the identified trials and contacted trial authors and known experts in the field and relevant drug companies to identify additional published or unpublished data. We searched clinical trials registries for ongoing studies. SELECTION CRITERIA We considered randomised controlled trials or quasi-randomised controlled trials of antivirals with and without corticosteroids versus control therapies for the treatment of Bell's palsy. We excluded trials that had a high risk of bias in several domains. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Pairs of authors independently assessed trials for relevance, eligibility, and risk of bias, using standard Cochrane procedures. MAIN RESULTS Ten trials, including 2280 participants, met the inclusion criteria and are included in the final analysis. Some of the trials were small, and a number were at high or unclear risk of bias. Other trials did not meet current best standards in allocation concealment and blinding. Incomplete recoveryWe found a significant benefit from adding antivirals to corticosteroids in comparison with corticosteroids alone for people with Bell's palsy (risk ratio (RR) 0.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.39 to 0.97, n = 1315). For people with severe Bell's palsy (House-Brackmann scores of 5 and 6 or the equivalent in other scales), we found a reduction in the rate of incomplete recovery at month six when antivirals plus corticosteroids were used, compared to corticosteroids alone (RR 0.64, 95% CI 0.41 to 0.99, n = 478). The outcome for the participants receiving corticosteroids alone was significantly better than for those receiving antivirals alone (RR 2.82, 95% CI 1.09 to 7.32, n = 768). The treatment effect of placebo was significantly lower than that of antivirals plus corticosteroids (RR 0.56, 95% CI 0.41 to 0.76, n = 658). Antivirals alone produced no benefit compared with placebo (RR 1.10, 95% CI 0.87 to 1.40, n = 658). Motor synkinesis or crocodile tearsIn two trials comparing antivirals and corticosteroids with corticosteroids and placebo that assessed this outcome, we found a significant difference in long-term sequelae in favour of antivirals plus corticosteroids (RR 0.56, 95% CI 0.36 to 0.87, n = 469). Two trials comparing antivirals alone with corticosteroids alone investigating this outcome showed fewer sequelae with corticosteroids (RR 1.52, 95% CI 1.08 to 2.12, n = 472). We found no data on long-term sequelae for other comparisons. Adverse events Adverse event data were available in three studies giving comparison data on 1528 participants. None of the four comparisons (antivirals plus corticosteroids versus corticosteroids plus placebo or no treatment; antivirals versus corticosteroids; antivirals plus corticosteroids versus placebo; antivirals versus placebo) showed significant differences in adverse events between treatment and control arms. We could find no correlation with specific treatment within these results. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Low-quality evidence from randomised controlled trials showed a benefit from the combination of antivirals with corticosteroids compared to corticosteroids alone for the treatment of Bell's palsy of various degrees of severity. Low-quality evidence showed a benefit of combination therapy compared with corticosteroids alone in severe Bell's palsy. Corticosteroids alone were more effective than antivirals alone and antivirals plus corticosteroids were more effective than placebo or no treatment. There was no benefit from antivirals alone over placebo.Moderate-quality evidence indicated that the combination of antivirals and corticosteroids reduced sequelae of Bell's palsy compared with corticosteroids alone.We found no significant increase in adverse events from the use of antivirals compared with either placebo or corticosteroids, based on low-quality evidence.
