Cubic to Tetragonal Phase Transition of SrTiO3 under Epitaxial Stress: An X-Ray Backscattering Study

Electronic Origin of Laser-Induced Ferroelectricity in SrTiO3

Although ultrafast control of the nonthermally driven ferroelectric transition of paraelectric SrTiO₃ was achieved under laser excitation, the underlying mechanism and dynamics of the photoinduced phase transition remain ambiguous. Here, the determinant formation mechanism of ultrafast ferroelectricity in SrTiO₃ is traced by nonadiabatic dynamics simulations. That is, the selective excitation of multiple phonons, induced by photoexcited electrons through the strong correlation between electronic excitation and lattice distortion, results in the breaking of the crystal central symmetry and the onset of ferroelectricity. The accompanying population transition between 3d_z² and 3d_x²-y² orbitals excites multiple phonon branches, including the two high-energy longitudinal optical modes, so as to drive the titanium ion away from the center of the oxygen octahedron and generate a metastable ferroelectric phase. Our findings reveal a cooperative electronic and ionic driving mechanism for the laser-induced ferroelectricity that provides new schemes for the optical control of ultrafast quantum states.

Anharmonic lattice dynamics and structural phase transition of SnTe monolayer from first principles

In this work we investigate the role of quartic anharmonicity on the lattice- and thermo-dynamic properties of rectangular (γ) and square (β) phases of two-dimensional (2D) SnTe monolayer (ML) by using self-consistent phonon (SCP) theory, based on the first-principles calculations. For both phases, as compared to the usual harmonic approximation (HA), the renormalized phonon frequency at the optical modes (4-10) is found to be increased upon the inclusion of quartic anharmonicity via the SCP method, where the effects of cubic anharmonicity are neglected. At the experimentally observed transition temperature (T_c= 270 K), the difference in the vibrational free-energy between the square and rectangular phases of SnTe ML, calculated by using the anharmonic SCP correction is found to be much closer to the structural energy gain as compared to that obtained by using only the quasi-harmonic contribution. This validates the significance of SCP approach over the HA to explain the lattice dynamics properties and predict theT_cfor SnTe ML and similar 2D compounds. The calculated lattice thermal conductivity of square SnTe ML (e.g. 10.67 W m^-1K^-1at 300 K) is higher than that of the rectangular SnTe ML (e.g. 6.72 W m^-1K^-1at 300 K) due to the relatively higher corresponding thermodynamic parameters: specific heat capacity, group velocity, and phonon lifetime obtained for the square SnTe ML. Particularly, the low energy phonon modes are found to transport most of the heat in the system and, hence, played major role to the total lattice thermal conductivity.

KTaO3 -The New Kid on the Spintronics Block

Long after the heady days of high-temperature superconductivity, the oxides came back into the limelight in 2004 with the discovery of the 2D electron gas (2DEG) in SrTiO₃ (STO) and several heterostructures based on it. Not only do these materials exhibit interesting physics, but they have also opened up new vistas in oxide electronics and spintronics. However, much of the attention has recently shifted to KTaO₃ (KTO), a material with all the "good" properties of STO (simple cubic structure, high mobility, etc.) but with the additional advantage of a much larger spin-orbit coupling. In this state-of-the-art review of the fascinating world of KTO, it is attempted to cover the remarkable progress made, particularly in the last five years. Certain unsolved issues are also indicated, while suggesting future research directions as well as potential applications. The range of physical phenomena associated with the 2DEG trapped at the interfaces of KTO-based heterostructures include spin polarization, superconductivity, quantum oscillations in the magnetoresistance, spin-polarized electron transport, persistent photocurrent, Rashba effect, topological Hall effect, and inverse Edelstein Effect. It is aimed to discuss, on a single platform, the various fabrication techniques, the exciting physical properties and future application possibilities of this family of materials.

Complex Oxides under Simulated Electric Field: Determinants of Defect Polarization in ABO3 Perovskites

Polarization of ionic and electronic defects in response to high electric fields plays an essential role in determining properties of materials in applications such as memristive devices. However, isolating the polarization response of individual defects has been challenging for both models and measurements. Here the authors quantify the nonlinear dielectric response of neutral oxygen vacancies, comprised of strongly localized electrons at an oxygen vacancy site, in perovskite oxides of the form ABO3 . Their approach implements a computationally efficient local Hubbard U correction in density functional theory simulations. These calculations indicate that the electric dipole moment of this defect is correlated positively with the lattice volume, which they varied by elastic strain and by A-site cation species. In addition, the dipole of the neutral oxygen vacancy under electric field increases with increasing reducibility of the B-site cation. The predicted relationship among point defect polarization, mechanical strain, and transition metal chemistry provides insights for the properties of memristive materials and devices under high electric fields.

Precision Multi-Mode Dielectric Characterization of a Crystalline Perovskite Enables Determination of the Temperature-Dependent Phase Transitions

Simple perovskite crystals undergo structural phase transitions on cooling to low temperatures, which significantly change the material properties of the crystal. In this work, we rigorously characterize the temperature evolution of permittivity of a perovskite crystal as it undergoes phase transitions. In particular, we have undertaken precision measurements of a single crystal of Strontium Titanate from 294.6 to 5.6 K, by measuring the frequency of multiple microwave transverse electric (TE) and magnetic resonant modes simultaneously. The multi-mode microwave measurement technique of resonant frequency used in this work allows high precision determination of any induced anisotropy of the permittivity as the crystal undergoes structural phase transitions. Compared with previous results, we unequivocally show that the permittivity has an isotropic value of 316.3±2.2 at room temperature, consistent with its well-known cubic structure, and determine the onset of dielectric anisotropy as the crystal is cooled to lower temperatures. We show that the crystal exhibits uniaxial anisotropy in the permittivity below 105 K when the structure becomes tetragonal, and exhibits biaxial anisotropy in the permittivity below 51 K when the structure becomes orthorhombic.

Observing a previously hidden structural-phase transition onset through heteroepitaxial cap response

Characterization of the onset of a phase transition is often challenging due to the fluctuations of the correlation length scales of the order parameters. This is especially true for second-order structural-phase transition due to minute changes involved in the relevant lattice constants. A classic example is the cubic-to-tetragonal second-order phase transition in SrTiO₃ (STO), which is so subtle that it is still unresolved. Here, we demonstrate an approach to resolve this issue by epitaxially grown rhombohedral La_0.7Sr_0.3MnO₃ (LSMO) thin films on the cubic STO (100) substrate. The shear strain induced nanotwinning waves in the LSMO film are extremely sensitive to the cubic-to-tetragonal structural-phase transitions of the STO substrate. Upon cooling from room temperature, the development of the nanotwinning waves is spatially inhomogeneous. Untwinned, atomically flat domains, ranging in size from 100 to 300 nm, start to appear randomly in the twinned phase between 265 and 175 K. At ∼139 K, the untwinned, atomically flat domains start to grow rapidly into micrometer scale and finally become dominant at ∼108 K. These results indicate that the low-temperature tetragonal precursor phase of STO has already nucleated at 265 K, significantly higher than the critical temperature of STO (∼105 K). Our work paves a pathway to visualize the onset stages of structural-phase transitions that are too subtle to be observed using direct-imaging methods.

Thickness dependent structural and electronic properties of CuO grown on SrTiO₃(100): a hybrid density functional theory study

We discuss the structural and electronic properties of tetragonal CuO grown on SrTiO₃(100) by means of hybrid density functional theory. Our analysis explains the anomalously large Cu-O vertical distance observed in the experiments (≈2.7 Å) in terms of a peculiar frustration between two competing local Cu-O environments characterized by different in-plane and out-of-plane bond lengths and Cu electronic populations. The proper inclusion of substrate effects is crucial to understanding the tetragonal expansion and to reproduce correctly the measured valence band spectrum for a CuO thickness of 3-3.5 unit cells, in agreement with the experimentally estimated thickness.

The flexoelectricity of barium and strontium titanates from first principles

We present ab initio calculations of the longitudinal flexoelectricity for BaTiO(3) and SrTiO(3) using a direct approach. The calculated value for SrTiO(3) agrees with recently reported measurements. For BaTiO(3), however, the theoretical values are smaller than the measured ones; possible reasons for the discrepancy are discussed.
