Stretchable, Patch-Type Calorie-Expenditure Measurement Device Based on Pop-Up Shaped Nanoscale Crack-Based Sensor

Strain-invariant stretchable radio-frequency electronics

Wireless modules that provide telecommunications and power-harvesting capabilities enabled by radio-frequency (RF) electronics are vital components of skin-interfaced stretchable electronics1-7. However, recent studies on stretchable RF components have demonstrated that substantial changes in electrical properties, such as a shift in the antenna resonance frequency, occur even under relatively low elastic strains8-15. Such changes lead directly to greatly reduced wireless signal strength or power-transfer efficiency in stretchable systems, particularly in physically dynamic environments such as the surface of the skin. Here we present strain-invariant stretchable RF electronics capable of completely maintaining the original RF properties under various elastic strains using a 'dielectro-elastic' material as the substrate. Dielectro-elastic materials have physically tunable dielectric properties that effectively avert frequency shifts arising in interfacing RF electronics. Compared with conventional stretchable substrate materials, our material has superior electrical, mechanical and thermal properties that are suitable for high-performance stretchable RF electronics. In this paper, we describe the materials, fabrication and design strategies that serve as the foundation for enabling the strain-invariant behaviour of key RF components based on experimental and computational studies. Finally, we present a set of skin-interfaced wireless healthcare monitors based on strain-invariant stretchable RF electronics with a wireless operational distance of up to 30 m under strain.

Bionic artificial skin with a fully implantable wireless tactile sensory system for wound healing and restoring skin tactile function

Tactile function is essential for human life as it enables us to recognize texture and respond to external stimuli, including potential threats with sharp objects that may result in punctures or lacerations. Severe skin damage caused by severe burns, skin cancer, chemical accidents, and industrial accidents damage the structure of the skin tissue as well as the nerve system, resulting in permanent tactile sensory dysfunction, which significantly impacts an individual's daily life. Here, we introduce a fully-implantable wireless powered tactile sensory system embedded artificial skin (WTSA), with stable operation, to restore permanently damaged tactile function and promote wound healing for regenerating severely damaged skin. The fabricated WTSA facilitates (i) replacement of severely damaged tactile sensory with broad biocompatibility, (ii) promoting of skin wound healing and regeneration through collagen and fibrin-based artificial skin (CFAS), and (iii) minimization of foreign body reaction via hydrogel coating on neural interface electrodes. Furthermore, the WTSA shows a stable operation as a sensory system as evidenced by the quantitative analysis of leg movement angle and electromyogram (EMG) signals in response to varying intensities of applied pressures.

A Fully Self-Powered Wearable Leg Movement Sensing System for Human Health Monitoring

Energy-autonomous wearable human activity monitoring is imperative for daily healthcare, benefiting from long-term sustainable uses. Herein, a fully self-powered wearable system, enabling real-time monitoring and assessments of human multimodal health parameters including knee joint movement, metabolic energy, locomotion speed, and skin temperature, which are fully self-powered by highly-efficient flexible thermoelectric generators (f-TEGs) is proposed and developed. The wearable system is composed of f-TEGs, fabric strain sensors, ultra-low-power edge computing, and Bluetooth. The f-TEGs worn on the leg not only harvest energy from body heat and supply power sustainably for the whole monitoring system, but also serve as zero-power motion sensors to detect limb movement and skin temperature. The fabric strain sensor made by printing PEDOT: PSS on pre-stretched nylon fiber-wrapped rubber band enables high-fidelity and ultralow-power measurements on highly-dynamic knee movements. Edge computing is elaborately designed to estimate multimodal health parameters including time-varying metabolic energy in real-time, which are wirelessly transmitted via Bluetooth. The whole monitoring system is operated automatically and intelligently, works sustainably in both static and dynamic states, and is fully self-powered by the f-TEGs.

Serpentine-inspired Strain Sensor with Predictable Cracks for Remote Bio-Mechanical Signal Monitoring

The flexible strain sensors have attracted intense interests due to their application as intelligent wearable electronic devices. However, it is still a huge challenge to achieve the flexible sensor with simultaneous high sensitivity, excellent durability and wide sensing region. In this work, a crack-based strain sensor with paired-serpentine conductive network is fabricated onto flexible film by screen printing. The innovative conductive network exhibits a controlled crack morphology during stretching, which endows the prepared sensor with outstanding sensing characteristics, including the high sensitivity (gauge factor up to 2391.5), wide detection (rang up to 132%), low strain detection limit, fast response time (about 40 ms), as well as excellent durability (more than 2000 stretching/releasing cycles). Benefiting from these excellent performances, full-range human body motions including subtle physiological signals and large motions are accurately detected by the prepared sensor. Besides, wearable electronic equipment integrated with wireless transmitter and the prepared strain sensor shows great potential for remote motion monitoring and intelligent mobile diagnosis for humans. MXene-Based Textile Sensors for Wearable Applications

Textile-based sensors in the form of a wearable computing device that can be attached to or worn on the human body not only can transmit information but also can be used as a smart sensing device to access the mobile internet. These sensors represent a potential platform for the next generation of human-computer interfaces. The continuous emergence of new conductive materials is one of the driving forces for the development of textile sensors. Recently, a two-dimensional (2D) MXene material with excellent performance has received extensive attention due to its high conductivity, processability, and mechanical stability. In this paper, the synthesis of MXene materials, the fabrication of conductive textiles, the structural design of textile sensors, and the application of MXene-based textile sensors in the wearable field are reviewed. Furthermore, from the perspective of MXene preparation, wearability, stability, and evaluation standards, the difficulties and challenges of MXene-based textile sensors in the field of wearable applications are summarized and prospected. This review attempts to strengthen the connection between wearable smart textiles and MXene materials and promote the rapid development of wearable MXene-based textile sensors.

A soft intelligent dressing with pH and temperature sensors for early detection of wound infection

Wound infection is a common clinical problem. Traditional detection methods can not provide infection early warning information in time. With the development of flexible electronics, flexible wearable devices have been widely used in the field of intelligent monitoring. Here, we describe the development of a soft wound infection monitoring system with pH sensors and temperature sensors. The measurement range of pH was 4–10, the fitting accuracy was 99.8%, and the response time was less than 6 s. The temperature sensor array showed good accuracy and short response times in the range of 30 °C to 40 °C. A series of in vitro tests and the use of a rat model of Staphylococcus aureus infection confirmed that this flexible detection system can monitor the pH and temperature changes occurring in the early stage of infection, which provides an effective reference for clinical application.

A soft intelligent dressing can monitor the changes of pH and temperature in the early stage of infection, which provides a possibility for wearable wound real-time monitoring.

Soft Bioelectronics Based on Nanomaterials

Recent advances in nanostructured materials and unconventional device designs have transformed the bioelectronics from a rigid and bulky form into a soft and ultrathin form and brought enormous advantages to the bioelectronics. For example, mechanical deformability of the soft bioelectronics and thus its conformal contact onto soft curved organs such as brain, heart, and skin have allowed researchers to measure high-quality biosignals, deliver real-time feedback treatments, and lower long-term side-effects in vivo. Here, we review various materials, fabrication methods, and device strategies for flexible and stretchable electronics, especially focusing on soft biointegrated electronics using nanomaterials and their composites. First, we summarize top-down material processing and bottom-up synthesis methods of various nanomaterials. Next, we discuss state-of-the-art technologies for intrinsically stretchable nanocomposites composed of nanostructured materials incorporated in elastomers or hydrogels. We also briefly discuss unconventional device design strategies for soft bioelectronics. Then individual device components for soft bioelectronics, such as biosensing, data storage, display, therapeutic stimulation, and power supply devices, are introduced. Afterward, representative application examples of the soft bioelectronics are described. A brief summary with a discussion on remaining challenges concludes the review.

Metallic Nanoislands on Graphene for Biomechanical Sensing

This minireview describes a nanomaterial-based multimodal sensor for performing biomechanical measurements. The sensor consists of ultrathin metallic films on single-layer graphene. This composite material exhibits physical properties that neither material possesses alone. For example, the metal, deposited by evaporation at low (≤10 nm) nominal thicknesses, renders the film highly sensitive to mechanical stimuli, which can be detected using electrical (i.e., resistance) and optical (i.e., plasmonic) modalities. The electrical modality, in particular, is capable of resolving deformations as small as 0.0001% engineering strain, or 1 ppm. The electrical and optical responses of the composite films can be tailored by controlling the morphology of the metallic film. This morphology (granular or island-like when deposited onto the graphene) can be tuned using the conditions of deposition, the identity of the substrate beneath the graphene, or even the replacement of the graphene for hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). This material responds to forces produced by a range of physiological structures, from the contractions of heart muscle cells, to the beating of the heart through the skin, to stretching of the skin due to the expansion of the lungs and movement of limbs. Here, we provide an update on recent applications of this material in fields ranging from cardiovascular medicine (by measuring the contractions of 2D monolayers of cardiomyocytes), regenerative medicine (optical measurements of the forces produced by myoblasts), speech pathology and physical therapy (measuring swallowing function in head and neck cancer survivors), lab-on-a-chip devices (using deformation of sidewalls of microfluidic channels to detect transiting objects), and sleep medicine (measuring pulse and respiration with a wearable, unobtrusive device). We also discuss the mechanisms by which these films detect strain.

Material Design and Fabrication Strategies for Stretchable Metallic Nanocomposites

Stretchable conductive nanocomposites fabricated by integrating metallic nanomaterials with elastomers have become a vital component of human-friendly electronics, such as wearable and implantable devices, due to their unconventional electrical and mechanical characteristics. Understanding the detailed material design and fabrication strategies to improve the conductivity and stretchability of the nanocomposites is therefore important. This Review discusses the recent technological advances toward high performance stretchable metallic nanocomposites. First, the effect of the filler material design on the conductivity is briefly discussed, followed by various nanocomposite fabrication techniques to achieve high conductivity. Methods for maintaining the initial conductivity over a long period of time are also summarized. Then, strategies on controlled percolation of nanomaterials are highlighted, followed by a discussion regarding the effects of the morphology of the nanocomposite and postfabricated 3D structures on achieving high stretchability. Finally, representative examples of applications of such nanocomposites in biointegrated electronics are provided. A brief outlook concludes this Review.
