Side-Chain Degradation of Ultrapure π-Conjugated Oligomers: Implications for Organic Electronics

Concentric hollow multi-hexagonal platelets from a small molecule

The creation of well-defined hollow two-dimensional structures from small organic molecules, particularly those with controlled widths and numbers of segments, remains a formidable challenge. Here we report the fabrication of the well-defined concentric hollow two-dimensional platelets with programmable widths and numbers of segments through constructing a concentric multiblock two-dimensional precursor followed by post-processing. The fabrication of concentric multi-hexagons two-dimensional platelets is realized by the alternative heteroepitaxial growth of two donor-acceptor molecules. Upon ultraviolet irradiation, one of the two donor-acceptor molecules can be selectively oxidized by singlet oxygen generated during the process, and the oxidized product becomes more soluble due to increased polarity. This allows for selective removal of the oxidized segments simply by solvent dissolution, yielding hollow multiblock two-dimensional structures. The hollow two-dimensional platelets can be utilized as templates to lithograph complex electrodes with precisely controlled gap sizes, thereby offering a platform for examining the optoelectronic performance of functional materials.

Toward Environmentally Robust Organic Electronics: Approaches and Applications

Recent interest in flexible electronics has led to a paradigm shift in consumer electronics, and the emergent development of stretchable and wearable electronics is opening a new spectrum of ubiquitous applications for electronics. Organic electronic materials, such as π-conjugated small molecules and polymers, are highly suitable for use in low-cost wearable electronic devices, and their charge-carrier mobilities have now exceeded that of amorphous silicon. However, their commercialization is minimal, mainly because of weaknesses in terms of operational stability, long-term stability under ambient conditions, and chemical stability related to fabrication processes. Recently, however, many attempts have been made to overcome such instabilities of organic electronic materials. Here, an overview is provided of the strategies developed for environmentally robust organic electronics to overcome the detrimental effects of various critical factors such as oxygen, water, chemicals, heat, and light. Additionally, molecular design approaches to π-conjugated small molecules and polymers that are highly stable under ambient and harsh conditions are explored; such materials will circumvent the need for encapsulation and provide a greater degree of freedom using simple solution-based device-fabrication techniques. Applications that are made possible through these strategies are highlighted.

Photochemical Degradation of Various Bridge-Substituted Fluorene-Based Materials

Photochemical degradation is an important issue to be overcome in advancing the lifetime of fluorene-containing conjugated polymers. In order to optimize the inertness of the materials, a quantitative measure for the efficiency of degradation is needed. Here, we introduce a method to measure a relative quantum yield of the photochemical degradation by monitoring the kinetics of the process by means of UV/vis spectroscopy and liquid chromatography (LC) techniques. This method is employed to a set of differently substituted 2,7-diphenylfluorenes, serving as model compounds for polyfluorene materials. Our measurements show that the quantum yield changes by orders of magnitude upon varying the bridge substituents and that altered kinetics indicate changing degradation mechanisms.

Morphology-dependent energy transfer dynamics in fluorene-based amphiphile nanoparticles

Nanoparticles are interesting systems to study because of their large range of potential uses in biological imaging and sensing. We investigated molecular nanoparticles formed by fast injection of a small volume of molecularly dissolved fluorene-derivative amphiphilic molecules into a polar solvent, which resulted in solid spherical particles of ∼80 nm diameter with high stability. Energy transfer studies were carried out on two-component nanoparticles that contained mixtures of donor and acceptor amphiphiles of various fractions. We conducted time-resolved photoluminescence measurements on the two-component nanoparticles in order to determine whether the fundamental donor-acceptor interaction parameter (the Förster radius) depends on the acceptor concentration. The Förster radius was found to be large for very low incorporated acceptor fractions (<0.1%), but it declined with increasing concentration. These changes were concomitant with shifts in the acceptor emission and absorption circular dichroism spectra that indicated an increasing clustering of acceptors into domains as their fraction was raised. In addition, for acceptor fractions below 2% the extracted Förster radii were found to be significantly larger than predicted from donor-acceptor spectral overlap calculations, in accordance with efficient excitation diffusion within the donor matrix, aiding the overall transfer to acceptors. We conclude that energy transfer in two-component nanoparticles shows a complex interplay between phase segregation of the constituent donor and acceptor molecules and excitation diffusion within their domains.

Direct generation of silica nanowire-based thin film on various substrates with tunable surface nanostructure and extreme repellency toward complex liquids

We report our new achievement on the direct generation of linear polyethylenimine@silica hybrid and silica thin films on various substrates, which is composed of 10 nm nanowire silica structure with tunable micro/nano hierarchical surface morphology. We found that a process for the rapid and controlled self-assembly of crystalline template layer of linear polyethylenimine on substrate surface is critical for the formation of ultrathin silica nanowire structure and micro/nano hierarchical morphology, since the template linear polyethylenimine layer directly promotes the hydrolytic condensation of alkoxysilanes. Templated silica mineralization on the self-assembled linear polyethylenimine layer was confirmed by the studies of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thin film X-ray diffraction (XRD). The surface of silica nanostructure and hierarchy could be well controlled by simply adjusting the conditions for LPEI assembly, such as the polymer concentrations and substrate surface property. After a simple fluorocarbon modification, the hierarchical silica nanowire thin film demonstrated robust and reliable super-repelling property toward a series of aqueous liquids (such as commercial inkjet (IJ) ink, soy source, milk). Comparative studies clearly confirmed the critical importance of surface hierarchy for enhancing super-repelling property. Moreover, we found that the forcibly formed dirty sports (both wet and dry) from the complexly composed liquids on the super-antiwetting surface could be easily and completely cleaned by simple water drop flow. We expect these tailored nanosurfaces would have the potentials for practical technological applications, such as liquid transferring, self-cleaning, microfluid, and biomedical-related devices.

Core, shell, and surface-optimized dendrimers for blue light-emitting diodes

We present a novel core-shell-surface multifunctional structure for dendrimers using a blue fluorescent pyrene core with triphenylene dendrons and triphenylamine surface groups. We find efficient excitation energy transfer from the triphenylene shell to the pyrene core, substantially enhancing the quantum yield in solution and the solid state (4-fold) compared to dendrimers without a core emitter, while TPA groups facilitate the hole capturing and injection ability in the device applications. With a luminance of up to 1400 cd/m(2), a saturated blue emission CIE(xy) = (0.15, 0.17) and high operational stability, these dendrimers belong to the best reported fluorescence-based blue-emitting organic molecules.

White-light emitting hydrogen-bonded supramolecular copolymers based on pi-conjugated oligomers

Three different pi-conjugated oligomers (a blue-emitting oligofluorene, a green-emitting oligo(phenylene vinylene), and a red-emitting perylene bisimide) have been functionalized with self-complementary quadruple hydrogen bonding ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) units at both ends. The molecules self-assemble in solution and in the bulk, forming supramolecular polymers. When mixed together in solution, random noncovalent copolymers are formed that contain all three types of chromophores, resulting in energy transfer upon excitation of the oligofluorene energy donor. At a certain mixing ratio, a white emissive supramolecular polymer can be created in solution. In contrast to their unfunctionalized counterparts, bis-UPy-chromophores can easily be deposited as smooth thin films on surfaces by spin coating. No phase separation is observed in these films, and energy transfer is much more efficient than in solution, giving rise to white fluorescence at much lower ratios of energy acceptor to donor. Light emitting diodes based on these supramolecular polymers have been prepared from all three types of pure materials, yielding blue, green, and red devices, respectively. At appropriate mixing ratios of these three compounds, white electroluminescence is observed. This approach yields a toolbox of molecules that can be easily used to construct pi-conjugated supramolecular polymers with a variety of compositions, high solution viscosities, and tuneable emission colors.
