Patterning of polymer electrodes by nanoscratching

F-Center-Mediated Growth of Patterned Organic Semiconductor Films on Alkali Halides

Organic semiconductors combine flexible tailoring of their optoelectronic properties by synthetic means with strong light-matter coupling, which is advantageous for organic electronic device applications. Although spatially selective deposition has been demonstrated, lateral patterning of organic films with simultaneous control of molecular and crystalline orientation is lacking as traditional lithography is not applicable. Here, a new patterning approach based on surface-localized F-centers (halide vacancies) generated by electron irradiation of alkali halides is presented, which allows structural control of molecular adlayers. Combining optical and atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is shown that dinaphthothienothiophene (DNTT) molecules adopt an upright orientation on pristine KCl surfaces, while the F-centers stabilize a recumbent orientation, and that these orientations are maintained in thicker films. This specific nucleation results also in different crystallographic morphologies, namely, densely packed islands and jagged fibers, each epitaxially aligned on the KCl surface. Spatially selective surface irradiation can also be used to create patterns of F-centers and thus laterally patterned DNTT films, which can be further transferred to any (including elastomer) substrate due to the water solubility of the alkali halide growth templates.

Pattern formation in thin polymeric films via electrohydrodynamic patterning

The free surface of a thin polymeric film is often unstable and deforms into various micro-/nano-patterns under an externally applied electric field. This paper reviews a recent patterning technique, electrohydrodynamic patterning (EHDP), a straightforward, cost-effective and contactless bottom-up method. The theoretical and numerical studies of EHDP are shown. How the characteristic wavelength and the characteristic time depend on both the external conditions (such as voltage, film thickness, template-substrate spacing) and the initial polymer properties (such as rheological property, electrical property and surface tension) is theoretically and experimentally discussed. Various possible strategies for fabricating high-aspect-ratio or hierarchical patterns are theoretically and experimentally reviewed. Aligning and ordering of the anisotropic polymers by EHDP is emphasized. A perspective, including novelty and limitations of the methods, particularly in comparison to some conventional patterning techniques, and a possible future direction of research, is presented.

Nanopipette/Nanorod-Combined Quartz Tuning Fork⁻Atomic Force Microscope

We introduce a nanopipette/quartz tuning fork (QTF)–atomic force microscope (AFM) for nanolithography and a nanorod/QTF–AFM for nanoscratching with in situ detection of shear dynamics during performance. Capillary-condensed nanoscale water meniscus-mediated and electric field-assisted small-volume liquid ejection and nanolithography in ambient conditions are performed at a low bias voltage (~10 V) via a nanopipette/QTF–AFM. We produce and analyze Au nanoparticle-aggregated nanowire by using nanomeniscus-based particle stacking via a nanopipette/QTF–AFM. In addition, we perform a nanoscratching technique using in situ detection of the mechanical interactions of shear dynamics via a nanorod/QTF–AFM with force sensor capability and high sensitivity.

Scalable Fabrication of Multiplexed Plasmonic Nanoparticle Structures Based on AFM Lithography

A controllable and scalable strategy is developed to fabricate multiplexed plasmonic nanoparticle structures by mechanical scratching with AFM lithography, which exhibit multiplex plasmonic properties and surface-enhanced Raman scattering responses. It offers an intuitive way to explore the plasmonic effects on the performance of an organic light-emitting diode device integrating with multiplexed plasmonic nanostructures.

Nanopatterned polymer brushes: conformation, fabrication and applications

Surfaces with end-grafted, nanopatterned polymer brushes that exhibit well-defined feature dimensions and controlled chemical and physical properties provide versatile platforms not only for investigation of nanoscale phenomena at biointerfaces, but also for the development of advanced devices relevant to biotechnology and electronics applications. In this review, we first give a brief introduction of scaling behavior of nanopatterned polymer brushes and then summarize recent progress in fabrication and application of nanopatterned polymer brushes. Specifically, we highlight applications of nanopatterned stimuli-responsive polymer brushes in the areas of biomedicine and biotechnology.

Poly(sodium-4-styrene sulfonate) (PSSNa)-assisted transferable flexible, top-contact high-resolution free-standing organic field-effect transistors

Here we demonstrate how, by means of poly(sodium-4-styrene sulfonate), one can successfully transfer the free-standing, flexible, high-resolution top-contact OFETs based on polystyrene insulator to arbitrary substrates.

Polyimide (PI) high-quality polymer dielectric films with the features of anti-solvents and large-area consistency for field-effect transistors

Solvent treated and untreated polyimide dielectric films show the same smooth surface, and the electrical performances of organic field-effect transistors over a large area are identical.

Water-vapor-assisted nanoimprinting of PEDOT:PSS thin films

PEDOT:PSS thin films are successfully patterned using water-vapor-assisted nanoimprinting, a process compatible with organic electronic devices. The imprinted patterns are characterized via grazing-incident small-angle X-ray scattering and scanning electron microscopy. Superior pattern transfer quality of water-vapor assisted nanoimprinting over conventional thermal nanoimprinting is demonstrated.

Biosupramolecular nanowires from chlorophyll dyes with exceptional charge-transport properties

Conductive tubes: Self-assembled nanotubes of a bacteriochlorophyll derivative are reminiscent of natural chlorosomal light-harvesting assemblies. After deposition on a substrate that consists of a non-conductive silicon oxide surface (see picture, brown) and contacting the chlorin nanowires to a conductive polymer (yellow), they show exceptional charge-transport properties.

High-performance and stable organic transistors and circuits with patterned polypyrrole electrodes

High performance p-/n-type transistors and complementary inverter circuits are demonstrated using patterned polypyrrole (PPY) as pure electrodes. Strikingly, these devices show good stability under continuous operation and long-term storage conditions. Furthermore, PPY electrodes also exhibit good applicability in solution-processed and flexible devices. All these results indicate the great potential of PPY electrodes in solution-processed, all-organic, flexible, transparent, and low-power electronics.

Patterned growth of polyaniline nanowire arrays on a flexible substrate for high-performance gas sensing

Uniform patterning of polyaniline nanowire arrays on a wafer-sized flexible substrate is achieved by combining photolithography and in situ polymerization techniques. Chemical gas sensors based on the patterned polyaniline nanowire arrays exhibit excellent performance because of their highly ordered morphology and large specific surface area.

Nanopatterning on silicon surface using atomic force microscopy with diamond-like carbon (DLC)-coated Si probe

Atomic force microscope (AFM) equipped with diamond-like carbon (DLC)-coated Si probe has been used for scratch nanolithography on Si surfaces. The effect of scratch direction, applied tip force, scratch speed, and number of scratches on the size of the scratched geometry has been investigated. The size of the groove differs with scratch direction, which increases with the applied tip force and number of scratches but decreases slightly with scratch speed. Complex nanostructures of arrays of parallel lines and square arrays are further fabricated uniformly and precisely on Si substrates at relatively high scratch speed. DLC-coated Si probe has the potential to be an alternative in AFM-based scratch nanofabrication on hard surfaces.

Patterning of conjugated polymers for organic optoelectronic devices

Conjugated polymers have been attracting more and more attention because they possess various novel electrical, magnetical, and optical properties, which render them useful in modern organic optoelectronic devices. Due to their organic nature, conjugated polymers are light-weight and can be fabricated into flexible appliances. Significant research efforts have been devoted to developing new organic materials to make them competitive with their conventional inorganic counterparts. It is foreseeable that when large-scale industrial manufacture of the devices made from organic conjugated polymers is feasible, they would be much cheaper and have more functions. On one hand, in order to improve the performance of organic optoelectronic devices, it is essential to tune their surface morphologies by techniques such as patterning. On the other hand, patterning is the routine requirement for device processing. In this review, the recent progress in the patterning of conjugated polymers for high-performance optoelectronic devices is summarized. Patterning based on the bottom-up and top-down methods are introduced. Emerging new patterning strategies and future trends for conventional patterning techniques are discussed.

Nanoscaled surface patterning of conducting polymers

In continuing the steady development of integrated-circuit-related fabrication, the ability to pattern conducting polymers into smaller and smaller sizes in order to realize devices with enhanced performance or even wholly new properties begins to take a more prominent role in their advanced applications. This review summarizes the recent advances in top-down and bottom-up patterning of conducting polymers on surfaces with different approaches including direct writing, in-situ synthesis or assembly, etching, and nanoscratching. All of the latest emerging strategies have the potential to go beyond the current state of the art towards real progress in terms of high-precision positioning, high resolution, high throughout, higher stability, facile processing, and lower-cost production.

Fabrication of a submicron-channel organic field-effect transistor using a controllable electrospun single fibre as a shadow mask

We demonstrate a simple and versatile method for the fabrication of a submicron channel for an organic field-effect transistor (OFET) using a single electrospun fibre as a shadow mask. A single electrospun fibre is produced by an alternative switching electrospinning method and is stretched 2.5-fold. The average diameter of the stretched fibres is 302 nm. The stretched fibre is placed on ultrathin dielectric layers of aluminium oxide and a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). During electrode deposition the fibre acts as a very small shadow mask. After removing the fibre, electrodes with very narrow gaps of around 350 nm and with high uniformity are easily obtained. We fabricate an OFET by depositing pentacene as an active layer onto the electrodes. The OFET is operable at low voltages, with a threshold voltage of - 1.1 V and a subthreshold swing of 0.27 V decade(-1), values which are one order of magnitude lower than those obtained with a channel length of 75 µm.

Engineering 3D ordered molecular thin films by nanoscale control

This perspective aims to report on experimental preparation and investigation tools for engineering molecular thin films with a three-dimensional (3D) nanoscale control that is of relevant interest for different emerging applications as well as for the development of calibration standards. Such thin films may be obtained by man-made methods, self-assembly or spatio-temporal self-organization and/or by the combination of these last approaches with external tools. Understanding the main features and the physical-chemistry underlying the related ordering phenomena is in due course and a theoretical framework is under development. In this respect it is of fundamental importance to achieve the ability to get 3D structural images with a nanoscale detail. This issue is at the early stage and novel techniques like electron tomography and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy are very promising.
