Chlorination of reduced graphene oxide enhances the dielectric constant of reduced graphene oxide/polymer composites

Atomically Engineered Chlorine Coordination of Iron in Active Centers for Selectively Catalytic H2O2 Decomposition Toward Efficient Antitumor-Specific Therapy

The intervention of endogenous H2O2 via nanozymes provides a potential antitumor-specific therapy; however, the role of the nanozyme structure in relation to the selective decomposition of H2O2 to hydroxyl radicals (•OH) is yet to be fully understood, which limits the development of this therapeutic approaches. Herein, an iron single-atom nanozyme (Fe─N2Cl2─C SAzyme) is reported, which is prepared through precise Fe─Cl coordination based on the construction of a characteristic Fe-containing molecule. Fe─N2Cl2─C exhibits efficient catalytic H2O2 decomposition (2.19 × 106 mm-1 s-1), which is the highest among reported SAzymes. More importantly, it is found that H2O2 selectively decomposed into •OH on the Fe─N2Cl2─C surface, which is attributable to the d orbitals of the Fe active center matching the O-2p electrons of the adsorbed hydroxide (*OH) intermediate. Fe─N2Cl2─C is strongly cytotoxic toward a variety of cancer-cell lines in vitro but not to normal cells. Furthermore, Fe─N2Cl2─C shows an outstanding specific therapeutic effect in vivo; it efficiently destroys solid malignant tumors without injuring normal tissue. Altogether, these findings highlight the selective catalytic decomposition of H2O2 to •OH, which is achieved by engineering the active center on the atomic level, thereby providing an avenue for the development of specific nanomedicines with efficient antitumor activities.

Flexible Composites for Piezocatalysis

Despite piezoelectric materials have a long history of application, piezoelectric catalysis has continued to be a hot topic in recent years. Flexible piezoelectric materials have just emerged in recent years due to their versatility and designability. In this paper, we review the recent advances in flexible piezoelectric materials for catalysis, discuss the fundamentals of the catalytic properties of composite materials, and detail the typical structures of these materials. We pay special attention to the types of filler in flexible piezoelectric composites, their role and the interaction between the particles and the flexible substrate. Notable examples of flexible piezoelectric materials for organic pollutants degradation, enhanced piezo-photocatalysis and antibacterial applications are also presented. Finally, we present key issues and future prospects for the development of flexible piezoelectric catalysts.

Graphene Quantum Dots Nonmonotonically Influence the Horizontal Transfer of Extracellular Antibiotic Resistance Genes via Bacterial Transformation

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) coexist with antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. Whether GQDs influence ARG spread needs investigation, since the resulting development of multidrug-resistant pathogens would threaten human health. This study investigates the effect of GQDs on the horizontal transfer of extracellular ARGs (i.e., transformation, a pivotal way that ARGs spread) mediated by plasmids into competent Escherichia coli cells. GQDs enhance ARG transfer at lower concentrations, which are close to their environmental residual concentrations. However, with further increases in concentration (closer to working concentrations needed for wastewater remediation), the effects of enhancement weaken or even become inhibitory. At lower concentrations, GQDs promote the gene expression related to pore-forming outer membrane proteins and the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species, thus inducing pore formation and enhancing membrane permeability. GQDs may also act as carriers to transport ARGs into cells. These factors result in enhanced ARG transfer. At higher concentrations, GQD aggregation occurs, and aggregates attach to the cell surface, reducing the effective contact area of recipients for external plasmids. GQDs also form large agglomerates with plasmids and thus hindering ARG entrance. This study could promote the understanding of the GQD-caused ecological risks and benefit their safe application.

Ultrafast, autonomous self-healable iontronic skin exhibiting piezo-ionic dynamics

The self-healing properties and ionic sensing capabilities of the human skin offer inspiring groundwork for the designs of stretchable iontronic skins. However, from electronic to ionic mechanosensitive skins, simultaneously achieving autonomously superior self-healing properties, superior elasticity, and effective control of ion dynamics in a homogeneous system is rarely feasible. Here, we report a Cl-functionalized iontronic pressure sensitive material (CLiPS), designed via the introduction of Cl-functionalized groups into a polyurethane matrix, which realizes an ultrafast, autonomous self-healing speed (4.3 µm/min), high self-healing efficiency (91% within 60 min), and mechanosensitive piezo-ionic dynamics. This strategy promotes both an excellent elastic recovery (100%) and effective control of ion dynamics because the Cl groups trap the ions in the system via ion-dipole interactions, resulting in excellent pressure sensitivity (7.36 kPa-1) for tactile sensors. The skin-like sensor responds to pressure variations, demonstrating its potential for touch modulation in future wearable electronics and human-machine interfaces.

In-Situ SERS Detection of Hg2+/Cd2+ and Congo Red Adsorption Using Spiral CNTs/Brass Nails

Brass spiral nails were functionalized with CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and utilized as a substrate for the growth of extremely long CNTs with helical structures and diameters smaller than 20 nm. Different methods were used to characterize the grown CNTs' structures and morphologies. The characteristic Raman peaks of CNTs were amplified four times after being uploaded on the spiral nail, making the substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) more sensitive. To detect Hg2+ and Cd2+ at concentrations ranging from 1 to 1000 ppb, a CNT/spiral brass nail was used as a SERS substrate. The proposed sensor demonstrated high sensitivity and selectivity between these heavy metal ions. As a result, the proposed CNTs/spiral brass sensor can be an effective tool for identifying heavy metal ions in aqueous solutions. In addition, Congo red (CR) adsorption as a function of initial dye concentration and contact time was investigated. For CR dye solutions with concentrations of 5, 10, and 20 mg/L, respectively, the highest removal percentage was determined to be ~99.9%, 85%, and 77%. According to the kinetics investigation, the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models effectively handle CR adsorption onto CNTs/spiral nails. The increase in the dye concentration from 5 ppm to 20 ppm causes the rate constant to drop from 0.053 to 0.040 min-1. Therefore, our sample can be employed for both the effective degradation of CR dye from wastewater and the detection of heavy metals.

Synergistic Enhanced Thermal Conductivity and Dielectric Constant of Epoxy Composites with Mesoporous Silica Coated Carbon Nanotube and Boron Nitride Nanosheet

Dielectric materials with high thermal conductivity and outstanding dielectric properties are highly desirable for advanced electronics. However, simultaneous integration of those superior properties for a material remains a daunting challenge. Here, a multifunctional epoxy composite is fulfilled by incorporation of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) and mesoporous silica coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs@mSiO₂). Owing to the effective establishment of continuous thermal conductive network, the obtained BNNSs/MWCNTs@mSiO₂/epoxy composite exhibits a high thermal conductivity of 0.68 W m^-1 K^-1, which is 187% higher than that of epoxy matrix. In addition, the introducing of mesoporous silica dielectric layer can screen charge movement to shut off leakage current between MWCNTs, which imparts BNNSs/MWCNTs@mSiO₂/epoxy composite with high dielectric constant (8.10) and low dielectric loss (<0.01) simultaneously. It is believed that the BNNSs/MWCNTs@mSiO₂/epoxy composites with admirable features have potential applications in modern electronics.

Surface-decorated graphene oxide sheets with nanoparticles of chitosan-Arabic gum for the separation of bioactive compounds: A case study for adsorption of crocin from saffron extract

This work provides a new perception toward the application of the graphenic-biopolymeric composites as a solid-bed for separation and purification of bioactive compounds. Graphene oxide nanocomposites with functionalized sheets by soluble and insoluble nanocomplexes of chitosan and Arabic gum, were successfully synthesized and employed for the adsorption and purification of crocin, a nutraceutical from saffron. The composites exhibited a nanostructured scaffold with a particle size of 10 nm and experienced an unprecedented increase in the surface area by about 300% and improved d-spacing sheets by 17%. The optimum conditions for crocin separation were temperature = 318 K, stirring rate = 300 rpm, initial concentration = 100 mg L^-1 and pH = 6. Under these conditions, the nanocomposites separated 99.1% of crocin in an equilibrium time of 30 min. The adsorption data were best represented by Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The thermodynamic studies indicated that the crocin adsorption on nanocomposites was an endothermic, spontaneous and physisorption process. The high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed that produced nanocomposites adsorbed crocin efficiently from saffron extract with a purity similar to the standard sample. The possible interaction mechanisms between crocin and nanocomposites were electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding.

Halogen Functionalization in the 2D Material Flatland: Strategies, Properties, and Applications

Given the electronegativity and bonding environment of halogen elements, halogenation (i.e., fluorination, chlorination, bromination, and iodination) serves as a versatile strategy for chemical modifications of materials. The combination of halogens and 2D materials has triggered extensive interests since the first report on graphene fluorination in 2008. Subsequently, scholars consistently conduct pre-, in-process, or posthalogenation modifications of emerging 2D materials to achieve desired properties and broad device applications. They also continuously explore the role of halogens in 2D material functionalization. The multiple advantages introduced by halogen decoration make 2D materials outstanding from each subclass. In this review, an overall retrospect is provided on the research advances in the area of 2D material halogenation, including experimental halogenation strategies, halogen-triggered novel physics and properties, and advanced applications across the studied objects. Future research directions in this area are also proposed.

In Operando Stacking of Reduced Graphene Oxide for Active Hydrogen Evolution

Despite the remarkable electronic and mechanical properties of graphene, improving the catalytic activity of the atomically flat, inert, and stable carbon network remains a challenging issue in both fundamental and application studies. In particular, the adsorption of most molecules and ions, including hydrogen (H₂ or H⁺), on graphene is not favorable, underlining the challenge for an efficient electrochemical catalytic reaction on graphene. Various defects, edges, and functionalization have been suggested to resolve the catalytic issue in graphene, but cost-effectiveness and active catalysis with graphene have not been achieved yet. Here, we introduce dynamic stacking of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with spontaneously generated hydrogen bubbles to form an efficient electrochemical catalyst with a graphene derivative; the in operando stacking of rGO, without using a high-temperature-based heteroatom doping process or plasma treatment, creates a large catalytic surface area with optimized edges and acidic groups in the rGO. Thus, the uniquely formed stable carbon network achieves active hydrogen evolution with a Tafel slope of 39 mV·dec^-1 and a double layer capacitance of 12.41 mF·cm^-2, which breaks the conventional limit of graphene-based catalysis, suggesting a promising strategy for metal-free catalyst engineering and hydrogen production.

Comparative study of Cl,N-Cdots and N-Cdots and application for trinitrophenol and ClO- sensor and cell-imaging

To understand the effect of Cl doping in carbon dots, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-Cdots) and nitrogen and chlorine dual-doped carbon dots (Cl,N-Cdots) were fabricated by high-temperature carbonization and low-temperature concentrated acid (HCl) acidification of dried shaddock peel, respectively. The quantum yield of Cl,N-Cdots is about four times of that of N-Cdots and the size of Cl,N-Cdots is smaller than that of N-Cdots. Furthermore, since trinitrophenol (PA) and ClO^- could effectively quench the fluorescence of Cl,N-Cdots, the fluorescence sensors for determining PA and ClO^- was constructed, respectively. The linear range of PA and ClO^- are 0.9-90 μM and 3.24-216 μM with the limit of detection of 37.1 nM and 2.88 μM, respectively. The proposed sensor was used to detect PA in Taiyuan tap water, Wutai tap water, Wutai rain water and Wutai river water samples with encouraging results. The as-constructed sensor was also used to detect ClO^- in Taiyuan tap water and commercial disinfectants. Last but not least, Cl,N-Cdots was employed as an agent for A549 and HeLa cell-imaging, possessing optimal imaging effect and ultra-low cytotoxicity. Our results suggested that Cl,N-Cdots has promising applications in sensing, water monitoring, commodity supervision and cell-imaging.

A self-powered delivery substrate boosts active enzyme delivery in response to human movements

Stimulated drug releases in response to human movements are highly appealing in medical therapy and various daily uses. However, the design of a mechanically responsive substrate that presents high delivery capacities and can also preserve the activities of sensitive molecules such as enzymes is still challenging. Taking advantage of the recent development in effective piezoelectric flexible films and in molecular delivery devices, we propose a composite delivery substrate that preserves enzyme activities and enhances molecular delivery in response to human movements such as finger presses or massages. The substrate is achieved by combining two parts, which are the energy converting unit and the molecular loading and releasing unit. The energy converting unit is a piezoelectric-dielectric flexible composite film that produces enhanced electricity and preserves the electricity longer compared to a pure piezoelectric polymer. The molecular delivery unit is a layer-by-layer multilayer containing mesoporous silica particles that are assembled at pH 9 but used in neutral solutions. The releases of molecules including small molecules, peptides, and proteins are all accelerated in response to finger presses irrespective of the signs or densities of their charges. More importantly, the enzyme CAT preserves its activity after release from the composite substrates, meaning that the CAT-loaded (PAH/MS)n(PAH/DAS)n@rGO-TFB/PVDF-HFP composite substrate holds promise as a self-powered soothing pad that effectively removes residue H2O2.

Sustainable in Situ Approach to Covalently Functionalize Graphene Oxide with POSS Molecules Possessing Extremely Low Dielectric Behavior

Incorporation of multifunctional inorganic additives into the commercial polymers still stands as the most captivating and effective way to realize new-generation electronic components. Here, we introduce a simple, cost-effective, and environmentally benign method to covalently functionalize graphene oxide (GO) with vinyl- and aminopropyl-functionalized hybrid silica spheres with a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-siloxane composition. The reaction has been carried out in a mixture of ethanol and water (used as a medium) at ambient conditions with silane precursors. Later, the synthesized hybrid material has been tested for its dielectric properties after blending with syndiotactic polystyrene, a commercially available insulating semicrystalline polymer. It was observed that the dielectric constant decreases with the addition of GOPOSS up to 1.85 with a dielectric loss of 0.02 at 5 GHz. Significant improvements in the thermal properties of the composites were verified with minimal filler loading.

Poole-Frenkel emission on functionalized, multilayered-packed reduced graphene oxide nanoplatelets

The unique electronic, mechanical and optical properties of graphene make it a remarkable 2D material, widely explored in a plethora of applications. However, graphene zero-bandgap and the production of defect-free pristine graphene in large areas still limit some applications. To circumvent these issues, graphene-derived 2D materials have arisen as attractive candidates for low-dimensional systems, which requires a better comprehension of their properties. Here, we report a detailed investigation of the conduction mechanisms of two functionalized reduced graphene oxides (rGOs) nanoplatelets, named GPAH and GPSS. The functionalized rGO nanoplatelets were bottom-up assembled via the layer-by-layer technique, enabling molecular-level thickness control of nanostructures with well-defined composition and structure. For the reported multilayered GPAH/GPSS films the charge carriers followed Mott's law, presenting a typical conduction behavior of 2D systems described by the Poole-Frenkel model. The multilayered GPAH/GPSS nanostructure presented a conductivity of 10^-4 S cm^-1, optical bandgap of ∼3.3 eV and a relative dielectric permittivity (ε _r) of 6.4. Temperature-dependent I-V measurements indicated a strong variation of ε _r below the critical temperature (T _C = 237 K), associated with a high dipole reorientation in the formed GPAH/GPSS nanostructure. All these characteristics make the GPAH/GPSS nanocomposite attractive for graphene-oriented applications, such as electronic devices.

Tuneable Dielectric Properties Derived from Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotubes in PVDF-Based Nanocomposites

Nitrogen-doped multiwall carbon nanotubes (N-MWNTs) with different structures were synthesized by employing chemical vapor deposition and changing the argon/ethane/nitrogen gas precursor ratio and synthesis time, and broadband dielectric properties of their poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based nanocomposites were investigated. The structure, morphology, and electrical conductivity of synthesized N-MWNTs were assessed via Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and powder conductivity techniques. The melt compounded PVDF nanocomposites manifested significantly high real part of the permittivity (ε') along with low dissipation factor (tan δ_ε) in 0.1 kHz to 1 MHz frequency range, suggesting use as efficient charge-storage materials. Longer synthesis time resulted in enhanced carbon purity as well as higher thermal stability, determined via TGA analysis. The inherent electrical conductivity of N-MWNTs scaled with the carbon purity. The charge-storage ability of the developed PVDF nanocomposites was commensurate with the amount of the nitrogen heteroatom (i.e., self-polarization), carbon purity, and inherent electrical conductivity of N-MWNTs and increased with better dispersion of N-MWNTs in PVDF.

Tailoring Blue-Green Double Emissions in Carbon Quantum Dots via Co-Doping Engineering by Competition Mechanism between Chlorine-Related States and Conjugated π-Domains

Representing single-layer to tens of layers of graphene in a size less than 30 nm, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) is becoming an advanced multifunctional material for its unique optical, electronic, spin and photoelectric properties induced by the quantum confinement effect and edge effect. In present work, upon co-doping engineering, nitrogen and chlorine co-doped CQDs with uniquely strong blue-green double emissions are developed via a facile and one-pot hydrothermal method. The crystalline and optical properties of CQDs have been well manipulated by tuning the mole ratio of nitrogen/chlorine and the reaction time. The characteristic green emission centered at 512 nm has been verified, originating from the chlorine-related states, the other blue emissions centered at 460 nm are attributed to the conjugated π-domain. Increasing the proportion of 1,2,4-benzentriamine dihydrochloride can effectively adjust the bandgap of CQDs, mainly caused by the synergy and competition of chlorine-related states and the conjugated π-domain. Prolonging the reaction time promotes more nitrogen and chlorine dopants incorporate into CQDs, which inhibits the growth of CQDs to reduce the average size of CQDs down to 1.5 nm, so that the quantum confinement effect dominates into play. This work not only provides a candidate with excellent optical properties for heteroatoms-doped carbon materials but also benefits to stimulate the intensive studies for co-doped carbon with chlorine as one of new dopants paradigm.

Piezoelectric Response in Electrospun Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Fibers Containing Fluoro-Doped Graphene Derivatives

Herein, graphene oxide (GO) was suitably functionalized to obtain carboxylated and fluorinated GO (GOCOOH and GOF) derivatives, respectively, via the Hunsdiecker reaction. Electrospun mats of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/GO, PVDF/GOCOOH, and PVDF/GOF fibers were then prepared by electrospinning from well-dispersed GO derivatives. The piezoelectric coefficient (d ₃₃), as measured using piezoelectric force measurement (PFM), enhanced by more than 2 folds with respect to the control PVDF spun mat. The piezoelectric coefficient though enhanced upon the addition of GO and GOCOOH, however, enhanced significantly in the case of GOF. For instance, a drastic increase in piezoelectric response from 30 pm V^-1(electrospun neat PVDF) to 63 pm V^-1 (for electrospun PVDF/GOF) was observed as revealed from PFM results. The phase transformation in these fibers was systematically investigated by various techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), wide angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and PFM. FTIR and XRD results revealed that the electrospun fiber mats showed predominantly β-PVDF. Interestingly, the highest β content was obtained in the presence of GOF. The drastic enhancement in β phase is due to the presence of highly electronegative fluorine. The addition of GOCOOH and GOF in PVDF not only increases the polar β phase but also changes the piezoelectric response significantly. More interestingly, PVDF/GOF films exhibited higher energy density and dielectric permittivity when compared with the control PVDF samples. These findings will help guide the researchers working in this field from both theoretical understanding and practical view point for energy storing device and charge storage electronics.

Enhanced physical properties of γ-Al2O3-rGO hybrids prepared by solvothermal and hot-press processing

In this study, a solvothermal method was employed for the first time to fabricate hybrids composed of cross-linked γ-Al2O3 nanorods and reduced graphite oxide (rGO) platelets. After calcination and hot-press processing, monoliths of Al2O3-rGO hybrids were obtained with improved physical properties. It was found that the oxygen-containing groups on graphene oxide were beneficial for the adsorption of aluminum isopropoxide, leading to a uniform dispersion of rGO with Al2O3, which was obtained by hydrolysis of aluminum isopropoxide during the solvothermal reaction. The hybrid, which was subsequently calcinated for 3 h showed electrical conductivity of 6.7 × 101 S m-1 together with 90% higher mechanical tensile strength and 80% higher thermal conductivity as compared to the bare Al2O3. In addition, the dielectric constant of the hybrid was 12 times higher than that of the bare Al2O3. In this study, the highest values of electrical conductivity (8.2 × 101 S m-1), thermal conductivity (2.53 W m-1 K-1), dielectric constant (104) and Young's modulus (3.7 GPa) were obtained for the alumina-rGO hybrid calcinated for 1 h. XRD characterization showed that an increase in calcination temperature and further hot-press processing at 900 °C led to enhanced crystallinity in the γ-Al2O3 nanorods in the hybrid, resulting in enhanced physical properties in the hybrids.

Photochlorination-induced transformation of graphene oxide: Mechanism and environmental fate

With the increasing production and wide utilization of graphene oxide (GO), the nanomaterials are expected to be released into the environment, and end up in surface waters, and/or wastewater treatment plants. This study explored the changes in the physicochemical properties of GO resulting from photochlorination- simulating the reactions that occur during water and wastewater treatment. Photochlorination resulted in significant changes in the surface oxygen-functionalities of the nanomaterials, and fragmenting of the graphenic carbon sheets was observed. We found that photochlorination can enhance the decomposition of GO through the formation of reduced GO. The changes in surface oxygen-functionalities of GO were attributed to the oxidation by chlorine of the nanomaterials' quinone groups, and further oxidation by and/or radicals. The surface charge of GO, measured by its zeta potential, increased in magnitude with chlorination but decreased in magnitude with photochlorination, leading to the decrease in the colloidal stability of the photochlorinated nanomaterials. The antibacterial effect of the nanomaterials increased with both chlorination and photochlorination. This study clearly shows how the physicochemical properties, and environmental fate and effect of GO are modified by photochlorination.

Silver Nanowire/MnO2 Nanowire Hybrid Polymer Nanocomposites: Materials with High Dielectric Permittivity and Low Dielectric Loss

This study reports the fabrication of hybrid nanocomposites based on silver nanowire/manganese dioxide nanowire/poly(methyl methacrylate) (AgNW/MnO₂NW/PMMA), using a solution casting technique, with outstanding dielectric permittivity and low dielectric loss. AgNW was synthesized using the hard-template technique, and MnO₂NW was synthesized employing a hydrothermal method. The prepared AgNW:MnO₂NW (2.0:1.0 vol %) hybrid nanocomposite showed a high dielectric permittivity (64 at 8.2 GHz) and low dielectric loss (0.31 at 8.2 GHz), which are among the best reported values in the literature in the X-band frequency range (8.2-12.4 GHz). The superior dielectric properties of the hybrid nanocomposites were attributed to (i) dimensionality match between the nanofillers, which increased their synergy, (ii) better dispersion state of AgNW in the presence of MnO₂NW, (iii) positioning of ferroelectric MnO₂NW in between AgNWs, which increased the dielectric permittivity of nanodielectrics, thereby increasing dielectric permittivity of the hybrid nanocomposites, (iv) barrier role of MnO₂NW, i.e., cutting off the contact spots of AgNWs and leading to lower dielectric loss, and (v) AgNW aligned structure, which increased the effective surface area of AgNWs, as nanoelectrodes. Comparison of the dielectric properties of the developed hybrid nanocomposites with the literature highlights their great potential for flexible capacitors.

Simultaneous Reduction and Functionalization of Graphene Oxide via Ritter Reaction

Graphene oxide, the oxidized form of graphite, is a common precursor to conductive nanosheets and used widely in the preparation of composite materials. GO has the benefits of easy exfoliation and handling, but it tends to aggregate and restack when reduced. One approach to overcoming this undesired aggregation is covalent modification of the nanosheets; however, this typically requires additional reagents and time. Herein, we report the simultaneous reduction and functionalization of graphene oxide using the Ritter reaction such that reduced nanosheets show good conductivity without the aggregation typical of unmodified material. GO reacts with nitriles in strongly acidic conditions to give highly reduced graphene oxide (C:O of 4.38:1) with covalently attached amides, which compatibilizes it to a number of organic solvents. This Ritter-type reaction produces carbocations on the basal plane of graphene oxide, which allows nucleophilic attack by the nitrogen of the nitrile and produces amides upon hydrolysis. The product has sheet resistance (57.60 ± 4.04 kΩ/sq) substantially lower than that of the starting graphene oxide (529.60 ± 10.04 kΩ/sq) and, more importantly, can easily be dispersed in various organic solvents and does not restack into graphite-like materials upon drying. This method yields individual conductive nanosheets that can be readily incorporated into a number of different systems.

Excellent mechanical performance and enhanced dielectric properties of OBC/SiO2 elastomeric nanocomposites: effect of dispersion of the SiO2 nanoparticles

A chain-like network structure and irregular dispersion of fillers are formed in OBC/SiO₂ nanocomposites. Excellent mechanical performance and enhanced dielectric properties of OBC/SiO₂ elastomeric nanocomposites are realized due to the peculiar chain-like network of the fillers.

Transformation of graphene oxide by chlorination and chloramination: Implications for environmental transport and fate

The rapidly increasing and widespread use of graphene oxide (GO) calls for immediate attention on the environmental fate of this material. To date, very little is known about the environmental transformation of GO. This study explored the changes of physicochemical properties of GO from chlorination and chloramination, which simulated the reactions occurring in water and wastewater treatment systems. Significant changes of GO surface O-functionalities occurred and scrolling of graphene sheets (those of very large sizes) were observed upon the treatments. Chloroform, a byproduct from chlorination was also detected, indicating the ring-opening on the edge of GO nanosheets. The changes of GO surface O-functionalities were attributable to the oxidation of quinone groups of GO by chlorine or chloramine. The scrolling of large-sized GO sheets may be attributable to the destruction of benzene rings at the edge of the GO. The results of membrane filtration experiments and column transport experiments indicated that chlorination and chloramination enhanced the mobility and transport of GO, likely by increasing the colloidal stability and inhibiting the agglomeration of GO nanosheets. The findings of this study further underline the significant implications of GO transformation on the fate and transport of this new nanomaterial.

Mechanisms and kinetics study on the trihalomethanes formation with carbon nanoparticle precursors

With lots of carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) applied in the industry, the possibilities of their environmental release have received much attention. As the CNPs may enter drinking water systems, and persist in water and wastewater treatment systems, their possible reaction with disinfectants should be studied. In this study, the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) with 5 types of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was investigated. All CNPs could act as precursors of THMs in aqueous phase. Total concentrations of THMs formed with CNPs varied from 0.24 to 0.95 μM, much lower than that formed from chlorinated Suwannee River Natural Organic Matter (SRNOM) (approximately 9 μM). The kinetics of THMs formation with GO was 0.0814 M(-1) s(-1), which is higher than most of the chlorinated humic acid obtained from different natural waters. The study indicates that during chlorination, C-Cl bond could be formed on the surface of CNPs. However, carbon atoms at the middle of two meta-positioned OH groups on the benzene ring are more active and may prefer to form THMs with chlorine oxidation. The influences of pH and reactant doses on the formation of THMs were also discussed.

One-pot hydrothermal synthesis of Nitrogen-doped graphene as high-performance anode materials for lithium ion batteries

Nitrogen-doped (N-doped) graphene has been prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal approach using hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) as single carbon and nitrogen source. In this hydrothermal process, HMTA pyrolyzes at high temperature and the N-doped graphene subsequently self-assembles on the surface of MgO particles (formed by the Mg powder reacting with H2O) during which graphene synthesis and nitrogen doping are simultaneously achieved. The as-synthesized graphene with incorporation of nitrogen groups possesses unique structure including thin layer thickness, high surface area, mesopores and vacancies. These structural features and their synergistic effects could not only improve ions and electrons transportation with nanometer-scale diffusion distances but also promote the penetration of electrolyte. The N-doped graphene exhibits high reversible capacity, superior rate capability as well as long-term cycling stability, which demonstrate that the N-doped graphene with great potential to be an efficient electrode material. The experimental results provide a new hydrothermal route to synthesize N-doped graphene with potential application for advanced energy storage, as well as useful information to design new graphene materials.

Highly Sensitive and Selective In-Situ SERS Detection of Pb(2+), Hg(2+), and Cd(2+) Using Nanoporous Membrane Functionalized with CNTs

Porous Anodic Alumina (PAA) membrane was functionalized with CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles and used as a substrate for the growing of very long helical-structured Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) with a diameter less than 20 nm. The structures and morphologies of the fabricated nanostructures were characterized by field emission- scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Raman spectroscopy. By uploading the CNTs on PAA, the characteristic Raman peaks of CNTs and PAA showed 4 and 3 times enhancement, respectively, which leads to more sensitive Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) substrates. For comparison, PAA and CNTs/PAA arrays were used as SERS substrates for the detection of Hg²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Pb²⁺. The proposed sensor demonstrated high sensitivity and selectivity between these heavy metal ions. CNTs/PAA sensor showed excellent selectivity toward Pb²⁺ over other metal ions, where the enhancement factor is decreased from ~17 for Pb²⁺ to ~12 for Hg²⁺ and to ~4 for Cd²⁺. Therefore, the proposed CNTs/PAA sensor can be used as a powerful tool for the determination of heavy metal ions in aqueous solutions.

1D/2D Carbon Nanomaterial-Polymer Dielectric Composites with High Permittivity for Power Energy Storage Applications

With the development of flexible electronic devices and large-scale energy storage technologies, functional polymer-matrix nanocomposites with high permittivity (high-k) are attracting more attention due to their ease of processing, flexibility, and low cost. The percolation effect is often used to explain the high-k characteristic of polymer composites when the conducting functional fillers are dispersed into polymers, which gives the polymer composite excellent flexibility due to the very low loading of fillers. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanosheets (GNs), as one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) carbon nanomaterials respectively, have great potential for realizing flexible high-k dielectric nanocomposites. They are becoming more attractive for many fields, owing to their unique and excellent advantages. The progress in dielectric fields by using 1D/2D carbon nanomaterials as functional fillers in polymer composites is introduced, and the methods and mechanisms for improving dielectric properties, breakdown strength and energy storage density of their dielectric nanocomposites are examined. Achieving a uniform dispersion state of carbon nanomaterials and preventing the development of conductive networks in their polymer composites are the two main issues that still need to be solved in dielectric fields for power energy storage. Recent findings, current problems, and future perspectives are summarized.

Electrical Double Layer Capacitance in a Graphene-embedded Al2O3 Gate Dielectric

Graphene heterostructures are of considerable interest as a new class of electronic devices with exceptional performance in a broad range of applications has been realized. Here, we propose a graphene-embedded Al₂O₃ gate dielectric with a relatively high dielectric constant of 15.5, which is about 2 times that of Al₂O₃, having a low leakage current with insertion of tri-layer graphene. In this system, the enhanced capacitance of the hybrid structure can be understood by the formation of a space charge layer at the graphene/Al₂O₃ interface. The electrical properties of the interface can be further explained by the electrical double layer (EDL) model dominated by the diffuse layer.

Ultra-light Hierarchical Graphene Electrode for Binder-Free Supercapacitors and Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

A mild and environmental-friendly method is developed for fabricating a 3D interconnected graphene electrode with large-scale continuity. Such material has interlayer pores between reduced graphene oxide nanosheets and in-plane pores. Hence, a specific surface area up to 835 m(2) g(-1) and a high powder conductivity up to 400 S m(-1) are achieved. For electrochemical applications, the interlayer pores can serve as "ion-buffering reservoirs" while in-plane ones act as "channels" for shortening the mass cross-plane diffusion length, reducing the ion response time, and prevent the interlayer restacking. As binder-free supercapacitor electrode, it delivers a specific capacitance up to 169 F g(-1) with surface-normalized capacitance close to 21 μF cm(-2) (intrinsic capacitance) and power density up to 7.5 kW kg(-1), in 6 m KOH aqueous electrolyte. In the case of lithium-ion battery anode, it shows remarkable advantages in terms of the initiate reversible Coulombic efficiency (61.3%), high specific capacity (932 mAh g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1)), and robust long-term retention (93.5% after 600 cycles at 2000 mAh g(-1)).

Highly Stretchable and Conductive Silver Nanoparticle Embedded Graphene Flake Electrode Prepared by In situ Dual Reduction Reaction

The emergence of stretchable devices that combine with conductive properties offers new exciting opportunities for wearable applications. Here, a novel, convenient and inexpensive solution process was demonstrated to prepare in situ silver (Ag) or platinum (Pt) nanoparticles (NPs)-embedded rGO hybrid materials using formic acid duality in the presence of AgNO₃ or H₂PtCl₆ at low temperature. The reduction duality of the formic acid can convert graphene oxide (GO) to rGO and simultaneously deposit the positively charged metal ion to metal NP on rGO while the formic acid itself is converted to a CO₂ evolving gas that is eco-friendly. The AgNP-embedded rGO hybrid electrode on an elastomeric substrate exhibited superior stretchable properties including a maximum conductivity of 3012 S cm^-1 (at 0 % strain) and 322.8 S cm^-1 (at 35 % strain). Its fabrication process using a printing method is scalable. Surprisingly, the electrode can survive even in continuous stretching cycles.
