Singlet Fission: Progress and Prospects in Solar Cells

Non-adiabatic electronic relaxation of tetracene from its brightest singlet excited state

The ultrafast relaxation dynamics of tetracene following UV excitation to the bright singlet state S6 has been studied with time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. With the help of high-level ab initio multireference perturbation theory calculations, we assign photoelectron signals to intermediate dark electronic states S3, S4, and S5 as well as to a low-lying electronic state S2. The energetic structure of these dark states has not been determined experimentally previously. The time-dependent photoelectron yields assigned to the states S6, S5, and S4 have been analyzed and reveal the depopulation of S6 within 60 fs, while S5 and S4 are populated with delays of about 50 and 80 fs. The dynamics of the lower-lying states S3 and S2 seem to agree with a delayed population coinciding with the depopulation of the higher-lying states S4-S6 but could not be elucidated in full detail due to the low signal levels of the corresponding two-photon ionization probe processes.

Intramolecular singlet fission: Quantum dynamical simulations including the effect of the laser field

In the previous work [Reddy et al., J. Chem. Phys. 151, 044307 (2019)], we have analyzed the dynamics of the intramolecular singlet fission process in a series of prototypical pentacene-based dimers, where the pentacene monomers are covalently bonded to a phenylene linker in ortho, meta, and para positions. The results obtained were qualitatively consistent with the experimental data available, showing an ultrafast population of the multiexcitonic state that mainly takes place via a mediated (superexchange-like) mechanism involving charge transfer and doubly excited states. Our results also highlighted the instrumental role of molecular vibrations in the process as a sizable population of the multiexcitonic state could only be obtained through vibronic coupling. Here, we extend these studies and investigate the effect of the laser field on the dynamics of intramolecular singlet fission by explicitly including the coupling to the laser field in our model. In this manner, and by selectively tuning the laser field to the different low-lying absorption bands of the systems investigated, we analyze the wavelength dependence of the intramolecular singlet fission process. In addition, we have also analyzed how the nature of the initially photoexcited electronic state (either localized or delocalized) affects its dynamics. Altogether, our results provide new insights into the design of intramolecular singlet fission-active molecules.

Computational Discovery of Intermolecular Singlet Fission Materials Using Many-Body Perturbation Theory

Intermolecular singlet fission (SF) is the conversion of a photogenerated singlet exciton into two triplet excitons residing on different molecules. SF has the potential to enhance the conversion efficiency of solar cells by harvesting two charge carriers from one high-energy photon, whose surplus energy would otherwise be lost to heat. The development of commercial SF-augmented modules is hindered by the limited selection of molecular crystals that exhibit intermolecular SF in the solid state. Computational exploration may accelerate the discovery of new SF materials. The GW approximation and Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW+BSE) within the framework of many-body perturbation theory is the current state-of-the-art method for calculating the excited-state properties of molecular crystals with periodic boundary conditions. In this Review, we discuss the usage of GW+BSE to assess candidate SF materials as well as its combination with low-cost physical or machine learned models in materials discovery workflows. We demonstrate three successful strategies for the discovery of new SF materials: (i) functionalization of known materials to tune their properties, (ii) finding potential polymorphs with improved crystal packing, and (iii) exploring new classes of materials. In addition, three new candidate SF materials are proposed here, which have not been published previously.

Activated Singlet Fission Dictated by Anti-Kasha Property in a Rylene Imide Dye

A key challenge in the search of new materials capable of singlet fission (SF) arises from the primary energy conservation criterion, i.e., the energy of the triplet exciton has to be half that of the singlet (E(S1) ≥ 2E(T1)), which excludes most photostable organic materials from consideration and confines the design strategy to materials with low energy triplet states. One potential way to overcome this energy requirement and improve the triplet energy is to enable a SF channel from higher energy ("hot") excitonic states (Sn) in a process called activated SF. Herein, we demonstrate that efficient activated SF is achieved in a rylene imide-based derivative acenaphth[l, 2-a]acenaphthylene diimide (AADI). This process is enabled by an increase in the energy gap to greater than 1.0 eV between the S3 and S1 states due to the incorporation of an antiaromatic pentalene unit, which leads to the emergence of anti-Kasha properties in the isolated molecule. Transient spectroscopy studies show that AADI undergoes ultrafast SF from higher singlet excited states in thin film, with excitation wavelength-dependent SF yields. The SF yield of ∼200% is observed upon higher energy excitation, and long-lived free triplets persist on the μs time scale suggesting that AADI can be used in SF-enhanced devices. Our results suggest that enlarging the Sn-S1 energy gap is an effective way to turn on the activated SF channel and shed light on the development of novel, stable SF materials with high triplet energies.

Appending Coronene Diimide with Carbon Nanohoops Allows for Rapid Intersystem Crossing in Neat Film

The development of innovative triplet materials plays a significant role in various applications. Although effective tuning of triplet formation by intersystem crossing (ISC) has been well established in solution, the modulation of ISC processes in the solid state remains a challenge due to the presence of other exciton decay channels through intermolecular interactions. The cyclic structure of cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) offers a unique platform to tune the intermolecular packing, which leads to controllable exciton dynamics in the solid state. Herein, by integrating an electron deficient coronene diimide (CDI) unit into the CPP framework, a donor-acceptor type of conjugated macrocycle (CDI-CPP) featuring intramolecular charge-transfer (CT) interaction was designed and synthesized. Effective intermolecular CT interaction resulting from a slipped herringbone packing was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Transient spectroscopy studies showed that CDI-CPP undergoes ISC in both solution and the film state, with triplet generation time constants of 4.5 ns and 238 ps, respectively. The rapid triplet formation through ISC in the film state can be ascribed to the cooperation between intra- and intermolecular charge-transfer interactions. Our results highlight that intermolecular CT interaction has a pronounced effect on the ISC process in the solid state, and shed light on the use of the characteristic structure of CPPs to manipulate intermolecular CT interactions.

Intramolecular Singlet Fission Coupled with Intermolecular Triplet Separation as a Strategy to Achieve High Triplet Yields in Fluorene-Based Small Molecules

In this work, detailed experimental proof and in-depth analysis of the singlet fission (SF) mechanism, operative in fluorene-based small molecules, are carried out by employing advanced time-resolved spectroscopies with nanosecond and femtosecond resolution. The investigation of the effect of solution concentration and solvent viscosity together with temperature and excitation wavelength demonstrates INTRAmolecular formation of the correlated triplet pair followed by INTERmolecular independent triplet separation via a "super-diffusional" triplet-triplet transfer process. This unconventional INTRA- to INTERmolecular SF may be considered an "ideal" mechanism. Indeed, intramolecular formation of the correlated triplet pair is here interestingly proved for small molecules rather than large multichromophoric systems, allowing easy synthesis and processability while maintaining good control over the SF process. On the other hand, the intermolecular triplet separation may be exploited to achieve high triplet quantum yields in these new SF small molecules.

Simultaneous Intra- and Intermolecular Singlet Fission in Bipentacene Macrocycle Aggregates

Singlet fission (SF) is a process where a singlet state splits into two triplet states, which is essential for enhancing optoelectronic devices. Macrocyclic structures allow for precise control of chromophore orientation and facilitate singlet fission in solutions. However, the behavior of these structures in thin films, crucial for solid-state device optimization, remains underexplored. This study examines the aggregation and singlet fission processes of bipentacene macrocycles (BPc) in thin films using molecular dynamics simulations and electronic structure calculations. Findings indicate that BPc aggregates more rapidly with less chloroform, aligning parallel to the substrate. Intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) rates are rarely changed during evaporation, but the efficiency of intermolecular singlet fission (xSF) improves due to the increase in packing domains, suggesting that orderly crystal domains are not necessary for device efficiency. This opens avenues for varied device designs and traditional solution-based methods for optimal device development.

Bypassing the Single Junction Limit with Advanced Photovoltaic Architectures

Multijunction devices and photon up- and down-conversion are prominent concepts aimed at increasing photovoltaic efficiencies beyond the single junction limit. Integrating these concepts into advanced architectures may address long-standing issues such as processing complexity, microstructure control, and resilience against spectral changes of the incoming radiation. However, so far, no models have been established to predict the performance of such integrated architectures. Here, a simulation environment based on Bayesian optimization is presented, that can predict and virtually optimize the electrical performance of multi-junction architectures, both vertical and lateral, in combination with up- and down-conversion materials. Microstructure effects on performance are explicitly considered using machine-learned predictive models from high throughput experimentation on simpler architectures. Two architectures that would surpass the single junction limit of photovoltaic energy conversion at reasonable complexity are identified: a vertical "staggered half octave system," where selective absorption allows the use of 6 different bandgaps, and the lateral "overlapping rainbow system" where selective irradiation allows the use of a narrowband energy acceptor with reduced voltage losses, according to the energy gap law. Both architectures would be highly resilient against spectral changes, in contrast with two terminal multi-junction architectures which are limited by Kirchhoff's law.

Measuring Intermolecular Excited State Geometry for Favorable Singlet Fission in Tetracene

Singlet fission (SF) is the process of converting an excited singlet to a pair of excited triplets. Harvesting two charges from a single photon has the potential to increase photovoltaic device efficiencies. Acenes, such as tetracene and pentacene, are model molecules for studying SF. Despite SF being an endoergic process for tetracene and exoergic for pentacene, both acenes exhibit near unity SF quantum efficiencies, raising questions about how tetracene can overcome the energy barrier. Here, we use recently developed instrumentation to measure inelastic neutron scattering (INS) while optically exciting the model molecules using two different excitation energies. The spectroscopic results reveal intermolecular structural relaxation due to the presence of a triplet excited state. The structural dynamics of the combined excited state molecule and surrounding tetracene molecules are further studied using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), which shows that the singlet and triplet levels shift due to the excited state geometry, reducing the uphill energy barrier for SF to within kT.

Electronic Properties of Graphene Nano-Parallelograms: A Thermally Assisted Occupation DFT Computational Study

In this computational study, we investigate the electronic properties of zigzag graphene nano-parallelograms (GNPs), which are parallelogram-shaped graphene nanoribbons of various widths and lengths, using thermally assisted occupation density functional theory (TAO-DFT). Our calculations revealed a monotonic decrease in the singlet-triplet energy gap as the GNP length increased. The GNPs possessed singlet ground states for all the cases examined. With the increase of GNP length, the vertical ionization potential and fundamental gap decreased monotonically, while the vertical electron affinity increased monotonically. Some of the GNPs studied were found to possess fundamental gaps in the range of 1-3 eV, lying in the ideal region relevant to solar energy applications. Besides, as the GNP length increased, the symmetrized von Neumann entropy increased monotonically, denoting an increase in the degree of the multi-reference character associated with the ground state GNPs. The occupation numbers and real-space representation of active orbitals indicated that there was a transition from the nonradical nature of the shorter GNPs to the increasing polyradical nature of the longer GNPs. In addition, the edge/corner localization of the active orbitals was found for the wider and longer GNPs.

Recent Advance in the Development of Singlet-Fission-Capable Polymeric Materials

Singlet fission (SF) is a spin-allowed process in which a higher-energy singlet exciton is converted into two lower-energy triplet excitons via a triplet pair intermediate state. Implementing SF in photovoltaic devices holds the potential to exceed the Shockley-Queisser limit of conventional single-junction solar cells. Although great progress has been made in exploiting the underlying mechanism of SF over the past decades, the scope of materials capable of SF, particularly polymeric materials, remains poor. SF-capable polymer is one of the most potential candidates in the implementation of SF into devices due to their distinct superiorities in flexibility, solution processability and self-assembly behavior. Notably, recent advancements have demonstrated high-performance SF in isolated donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymer chains. This review provides an overview of recent progress in the development of SF-capable polymeric materials, with a significant focus on elucidating the mechanisms of SF in polymers and optimizing the design strategies for SF-capable polymers. Additionally, the paper discusses the challenges encountered in this field and presents future perspectives. It is expected that this comprehensive review will offer valuable insights into the design of novel SF-capable polymeric materials, further advancing the potential for SF implementation in photovoltaic devices.

Dipyrrolonaphthyridinedione - (still) a mysterious cross-conjugated chromophore

Dipyrrolonaphthyridinediones (DPNDs) entered the chemical world in 2016. This cross-conjugated donor-acceptor skeleton can be prepared in two steps from commercially available reagents in overall yield ≈15-20% (5 mmol scale). DPNDs can be easily and regioselectively halogenated which opens an avenue to numerous derivatives as well as to π-expansion. Although certain synthetic limitations exist, the current derivatization possibilities provided impetus for numerous explorations that use DPNDs. Structural modifications enable bathochromic shift of the emission to deep-red region and reaching the optical brightness 30 000 M-1 cm-1. Intense absorption and strong emission of greenish-yellow light attracted the interest which eventually led to the discovery of their strong two-photon absorption, singlet fission in the crystalline phase and triplet sensitization. Dipyrrolonaphthyridinedione-based twistacenes broadened our knowledge on the influence of twisting angle on the fate of the molecule in the excited state. Collectively, these findings highlight the compatibility of DPNDs with various applications within organic optoelectronics.

Catalyzing Singlet Fission by Transition Metals: Second versus Third Row Effects

The synthesis and characterization of platinum(II) and palladium(II) complexes bearing two (dimers Pt(Lpc)2Cl2 and Pd(Lpc)2Cl2), one (monomers Pt(Lpc)(Lref)Cl2 and Pd(Lpc)(Lref)Cl2), or no (reference compounds Pt(Lref)2Cl2 and Pd(Lref)2Cl2) pentacene-based pyridyl ligands are presented. Photophysical properties of the dimers are probed by means of steady-state and time-resolved transient absorption measurements in comparison to the monomer and model compounds. Our results document that despite enhanced spin-orbit coupling from the presence of heavy atoms, intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) is not challenged by intersystem crossing. iSF thus yields correlated triplet pairs and even uncorrelated triplet excited states upon decoherence. Importantly, significant separation of the two pentacenyl groups facilitates decoupling of the two chromophores. Furthermore, the mechanism of iSF is altered depending on the respective metal center, that is, Pt(II) versus Pd(II). The dimer based on Pt(II), Pt(Lpc)2Cl2, exhibits a direct pathway for the iSF and forms a correlated triplet pair with singlet-quintet spin-mixing within 10 ns in variable solvents. On the other hand, the dimer based on Pd(II), Pd(Lpc)2Cl2, leads to charge transfer mixing during the population of the correlated triplet pair that is dependent on solvent polarity. Moreover, Pd(Lpc)2Cl2 gives rise to a stable equilibrium between singlet and quintet correlated triplet pairs with lifetimes of up to 170 ns. Inherent differences in the size and polarizability, when contrasting platinum(II) with palladium(II), are the most likely rationale for the underlying trends.

Excitation localization/delocalization induced intramolecular singlet fission in cyclopentadithiophene-based quinoidal derivatives

Two triplet excitons are generated through an ultrafast photophysical process, namely singlet fission (SF), providing a solution for efficient solar energy usage. In this work, we provide an effective guideline for designing SF materials by adjusting the planarity in cyclopentadithiophene (CPDT) derivatives. A practical strategy is proposed for tuning the quinoidal-biradical resonance structures by varying the electron push-pull groups of CPDTs for SF. The localized, delocalized, and intermediate charge-transfer excited configurations are predicted in the singlet excited state via computational simulations, which is further confirmed by ultrafast spectroscopy. Deduced from the potential energy surfaces in the low-lying excited states and transient absorption, the delocalized excited state is formed in 2.1 ps via postulated intramolecular SF in a polar solvent, followed by the ultrafast formation of the free triplet state with a lifetime of 6.8 ps. In comparison with different cross-conjugated chromophores, it is found that the increase in the charge separation could enhance the triplet-pair generation for iSF. We expect that by introducing symmetry-breaking modifications in the electronic configurations and adjusting the separation between the push-pull groups of CPDTs, it should be possible to prolong the duration of the free triplet state by preventing recombination within the triplet-pair excited configuration.

Unveiling the intersystem crossing dynamics in N-annulated perylene bisimides

The efficient population of the triplet excited states in heavy metal-free organic chromophores has been one of the long-standing research problems to molecular photochemists. The negligible spin-orbit coupling matrix elements in the purely organic chromophores and the large singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔES-T) pose a hurdle for ultrafast intersystem crossing (ISC). Herein we report the unprecedented population of triplet manifold in a series of nitrogen-annulated perylene bisimide chromophores (NPBI and Br-NPBI). NPBI is found to have a moderate fluorescence quantum yield (Φf = 68 ± 5%), whereas Br-NPBI showcased a low fluorescence quantum yield (Φf = 2.0 ± 0.6%) in toluene. The femtosecond transient absorption measurements of Br-NPBI revealed ultrafast ISC (kISC = 1.97 × 1010 s-1) from the initially populated singlet excited state to the long-lived triplet excited states. The triplet quantum yields (ΦT = 95.2 ± 4.6% for Br-NPBI, ΦT = 18.7 ± 2.3% for NPBI) calculated from nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements showed the enhancement in triplet population upon bromine substitution. The quantum chemical calculations revealed the explicit role of nitrogen annulation in tuning the excited state energy levels to favor the ISC. The near degeneracy between the singlet and triplet excited states observed in NPBI and Br-NPBI (ΔES-T = -0.01 eV for NPBI, ΔES-T = 0.03 eV for Br-NPBI) facilitates the spin flipping in the molecules. Nitrogen annulation emerges as a design strategy to open up the ISC pathway and the rate of which can be further enhanced by the substitution of a heavier element.

Tetracene Dimers: A Platform for Intramolecular Down- and Up-conversion

Photon energy conversion can be accomplished in many different ways, including the two opposing manners, down-conversion (i.e., singlet fission, SF) and up-conversion (i.e., triplet-triplet annihilation up-conversion, TTA-UC). Both processes have the potential to help overcome the detailed balance limit of single-junction solar cells. Tetracene, in which the energies of the lowest singlet excited state and twice the triplet excited state are comparable, exhibits both down- and up-conversion. Here, we have designed meta-diethynylphenylene- and 1,3-diethynyladamantyl-linked tetracene dimers, which feature different electronic coupling, to characterize the interplay between intramolecular SF (intra-SF) and intramolecular TTA-UC (intra-TTA-UC) via steady-state and time-resolved absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Furthermore, we have used Pd-phthalocyanine as a sensitizer to enable intra-TTA-UC in the two dimers via indirect photoexcitation in the near-infrared part of the solar spectrum. The work is rounded off by temperature-dependent measurements, which outline key aspects of how thermal effects impact intra-SF and intra-TTA-UC in different dimers.

Dynamic Evolving Exothermicity Steers Ultrafast Formation of a Correlated Triplet Pair State

Singlet fission (SF) presents an attractive solution to overcome the Shockley-Queisser limit of single-junction solar cells. The conversion from an initial singlet state to final triplet is mediated by the correlated triplet pair state ¹(T₁T₁). Despite significant advancement on ¹(T₁T₁) properties and its role in SF, a comprehensive understanding of the energetic landscape during SF is still unclear. Here, we study an unconventional SF system with excited-state aromaticity, i.e., cyano-substituted dipyrrolonaphtheridinedione derivative (DPND-CN), using time-resolved spectroscopy as a function of the temperature. We demonstrate that the population transfer from S₁ to ¹(T₁T₁) is driven by a time-dependent exothermicity resulting from the coherent coupling between electronic and spin degrees of freedom. This is followed by thermal-activated dissociation of ¹(T₁T₁) to yield free triplets. Our results provide some new insight into the SF mechanism, which may guide the development of new efficient and stable SF materials for practical applications.

Singlet Fission-Based High-Resolution X-Ray Imaging Scintillation Screens

X-ray imaging technology is critical to numerous different walks of daily life, ranging from medical radiography and security screening all the way to high-energy physics. Although several organic chromophores are fabricated and tested as X-ray imaging scintillators, they generally show poor scintillation performance due to their weak X-ray absorption cross-section and inefficient exciton utilization efficiency. Here, a singlet fission-based high-performance organic X-ray imaging scintillator with near unity exciton utilization efficiency is presented. Interestingly, it is found that the X-ray sensitivity and imaging resolution of the singlet fission-based scintillator are dramatically improved by an efficient energy transfer from a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) sensitizer, in which both singlet and triplet excitons can be efficiently harnessed. The fabricated singlet fission-based scintillator exhibits a high X-ray imaging resolution of 27.5 line pairs per millimeter (lp mm^-1 ), which exceeds that of most commercial scintillators, demonstrating its high potential use in medical radiography and security inspection.

Triplet Separation after the Fastest Intramolecular Singlet Fission in the Smallest Chromophore

Singlet fission is of key importance in harvesting solar energy in solar cells, as it generates a pair of triplet excitons on the incidence of a photon. This phenomenon is not yet widely employed in the organic photovoltaics industry mostly because of the rarity of singlet fission chromophores. Pyrazino[2,3-g]quinoxaline-1,4,6,9-tetraoxide was recently designed as the smallest intramolecular singlet fission chromophore, and it undergoes the fastest singlet fission with a 16 fs time scale. The subsequent separation of the generated triplet-pair is of likewise importance as their efficient generation. Through quantum chemistry calculations and quantum dynamics simulations, we show that the triplet-pair separates to residing on two chromophores with an ∼80% probability on each collision between a chromophore with the triplet-pair and a ground state chromophore. Avoided crossing, instead of conical intersection, is involved in the efficient exciton separation.

Singlet fission preserves polarisation correlation of excitons

Singlet fission (SF) holds the promise to circumvent the photovoltaic efficiency limit to reach a power-conversion efficiency above 34%. SF of TIPS-pentacene (TIPS-Pn) has been investigated but its mechanism is yet to be well elucidated. Recently, we developed a nanoparticle (NP) system, in which doping of TIPS-Pn in a host matrix yields a range of average intermolecular distances, d, to study the dependence of SF in TIPS-Pn on d. At large d values, where the bimolecular SF process should be unfavourable, a relatively high SF quantum yield (Φ_SF) is still observed, which implies a deviation from a random distribution of TIPS-Pn throughout the NP. Here, using polarisation-sensitive femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy and Monte Carlo simulations of exciton migration and SF, we quantify the level of clustering of TIPS-Pn in the host matrix, which is responsible for the higher than expected Φ_SF. The experimental data indicate a preservation of polarisation correlation by SF, which is uncommon because energy transfer in amorphous materials tends to result in depolarisation. We show that the preservation of polarisation correlation is due to SF upon exciton migration. Although exciton migration decorrelates polarisation, SF acts to remove decorrelated excitons to give an overall preservation of polarisation correlation.

Quantum chemical investigation of Z-shaped heptazethrenes derivatives with detailed structural parameters and singlet fission for photovoltaic applications

A variety of organic solar cells has been discovered, but there is a need for efficient optoelectronic material to obtain high power conversion efficiency. In this study, we derived new molecules from Z-shaped heptazethrene. We measured its photovoltaic parameters, including frontier molecular orbitals (where the energy gap decreases to 16% as compared to the reference), molecular electrostatic potential maps (more nucleophilic core), the density of states (partial and total), absorbance in Vis-IR region (in the range of 650-1000 nm), transition density matrix, and hole-electron mobility in terms of reorganization energy that showed 11% higher electron mobility (λ_e) and 52% higher hole mobility (λ_h) as compared to the reference. A comparable power conversion efficiency (∼9%) is obtained from a single photon. Using the concept of singlet fission, we can increase the efficiency twice using a single photon (based on the diradical character of the molecule). The diradical character of the entitled molecules was also calculated. The designed molecules fulfil the criteria of singlet fission that generate two excited triplets from a single photon (E_S1>2E_T1). The designed molecules are more stable than the reference indicated by the singlet-triplet energy gap, which is 37% higher. Hence this work assists the researcher in enhancing the efficiency of the solar cell.

Design of the Smallest Intramolecular Singlet Fission Chromophore with the Fastest Singlet Fission

We designed an intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) chromophore, pyrazino[2,3-g]quinoxaline-1,4,6,9-tetraoxide. Appropriate substitutions into anthracene enhance the tetraradical character, so that the molecule accommodates a pair of triplet excitons in its lowest singlet excited state. Our simulation showed a 16 fs fast iSF of the design, which is a new record. The design also sets a new record of small size iSF chromophore and high exciton density. The design can be synthesized by oxidizing the tertiary N centers of the existent pyrazino[2,3-g]quinoxaline.

Direct Exciton Harvesting from a Bound Triplet Pair

Singlet fission is commonly defined as the generation of two triplet excitons from a single absorbed photon. However, ambiguities within this definition arise due to the complexity of the various double triplet states that exist in SF chromophores and the corresponding interconversion processes. To clarify this process, singlet fission is frequently depicted as sequential two-step conversion in which a singlet exciton decays into a bound triplet-pair biexciton state that dissociates into two "free" triplet excitons. However, this model discounts the potential for direct harvesting from the coupled biexciton state. Here, it is demonstrated that individual triplet excitons can be extracted directly from a bound triplet pair. It is demonstrated that due to the requirement for geminate triplet-triplet annihilation in intramolecular singlet fission compounds, unique spectral and kinetic signatures can be used to quantify triplet-pair harvesting yields. An internal quantum efficiency for triplet exciton transfer from the triplet pair of >50%, limited only by the solubility of the compounds is achieved. The harvesting process is not dependent on the net multiplicity of the triplet-pair state, suggesting that an explicit, independent dissociation step is not a requirement for using triplet pairs to do chemical or electrical work.

Effects of the Separation Distance between Two Triplet States Produced from Intramolecular Singlet Fission on the Two-Electron-Transfer Process

To harvest two triplet excitons of singlet fission (SF) via a two-electron transfer efficiently, the revelation of the key factors that influence the two-electron-transfer process is necessary. Here, by using steady-state and transient absorption/fluorescence spectroscopy, we investigated the two-electron-transfer process from the two triplet excitons of intramolecular SF (iSF) in a series of tetracene oligomers (dimer, trimer, and tetramer) with 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) as an electron acceptor in solution. Quantitative two-electron transfer could be conducted for the trimer and tetramer, and the rate for the tetramer is faster than that for the trimer. However, the maximum efficiency of the two-electron transfer in the dimer is relatively low (∼47%). The calculation result of the free energy change (ΔG) of the second-electron transfer for these three compounds (-0.024, -0.061, and -0.074 eV for the dimer, trimer, and tetramer, respectively) is consistent with the experimental observation. The much closer ΔG value to zero for the dimer should be responsible for its low efficiency of the two-electron transfer. Different ΔG values for these three oligomers are attributed to the different Coulomb repulsive energies between the two positive charges generated after the two-electron transfer that is caused by their various intertriplet distances. This result reveals for the first time the important effect of the Coulomb repulsive energy, which depends on the intertriplet distance, on the two-electron transfer process from the two triplet excitons of iSF.

Parallel versus Twisted Pentacenes: Conformational Impact on Singlet Fission

We placed two pentacene chromophores at the termini of a diacetylene linker to investigate the impact of excitation wavelength, conformational flexibility, and vibronic coupling on singlet fission. Photoexcitation of the low-energy absorption results in a superposed mixture of states, which transform on an ultrafast time-scale into a spin-correlated and vibronically coupled/hot delocalized triplet pair 1(T1T1)deloc. Regardless of temperature, the lifetime for 1(T1T1)deloc is less than 2 ps. In contrast, photoexcitation of the high-energy absorption results in the formation of 1(T1T1)deloc lasting 1.0 ps, which then decays at room temperature within 4 ps via triplet-triplet annihilation. Lowering the temperature enables 1(T1T1)deloc to delocalize and vibronically decouple, in turn affording 1(T1T1)loc. In addition, our results suggest that the quasi-free rotation at the diacetylene spacer may lead to twisted conformations with very low SF quantum yields, highlighting the need of controlling this structural aspect in the design of new singlet fission active molecules.

Dispersion Interactions in Exciton-Localized States. Theory and Applications to π-π* and n-π* Excited States

We address the problem of intermolecular interaction energy calculations in molecular complexes with localized excitons. Our focus is on the correct representation of the dispersion energy. We derive an extended Casimir-Polder formula for direct computation of this contribution through second order in the intermolecular interaction operator V̂. An alternative formula, accurate to infinite order in V̂, is derived within the framework of the adiabatic connection (AC) theory. We also propose a new parametrization of the VV10 nonlocal correlation density functional, so that it corrects the CASSCF energy for the dispersion contribution and can be applied to excited-state complexes. A numerical investigation is carried out for benzene, pyridine, and peptide complexes with the local exciton corresponding to the lowest π–π* or n– π* states. The extended Casimir-Polder formula is implemented in the framework of multiconfigurational symmetry-adapted perturbation theory, SAPT(MC). A SAPT(MC) analysis shows that the creation of a localized exciton affects mostly the electrostatic component of the interaction energy of investigated complexes. Nevertheless, the changes in Pauli repulsion and dispersion energies cannot be neglected. We verify the performance of several perturbation- and AC-based methods. Best results are obtained with a range-separated variant of an approximate AC approach employing extended random phase approximation and CASSCF wave functions.

Altering singlet fission pathways in perylene-dimers; perylene-diimide versus perylene-monoimide

We used a systematic approach to shed light on the inherent differences in perylenes, namely monoimides versus diimides, including coplanarity and dipole moment, and their impact on singlet fission (SF) by designing, synthesizing, and probing a full fledged series of phenylene- and naphthalene-linked dimers. Next to changing the functionality of the perylene core, we probed the effect of the spacers and their varying degrees of rotational freedom, molecular electrostatic potentials, and intramolecular interactions on the SF-mechanism and -efficiencies. An arsenal of spectroscopic techniques revealed that for perylene-monoimides, a strong charge-transfer mixing with the singlet and triplet excited states restricts SF and yields low triplet quantum yields. This is accompanied by an up-conversion channel that includes geminate triplet-triplet recombination. Using perylene-diimides alters the SF-mechanism by populating a charge-separated-state intermediate, which either favors or shuts-down SF. Napthylene-spacers bring about higher triplet quantum yields and overall better SF-performance for all perylene-monoimides and perylene-diimides. The key to better SF-performance is rotational freedom because it facilitates the overall excited-state polarization and amplifies intramolecular interactions between chromophores.

Dynamics of Excitons in Conjugated Molecules and Organic Semiconductor Systems

The exciton, an excited electron-hole pair bound by Coulomb attraction, plays a key role in photophysics of organic molecules and drives practically important phenomena such as photoinduced mechanical motions of a molecule, photochemical conversions, energy transfer, generation of free charge carriers, etc. Its behavior in extended π-conjugated molecules and disordered organic films is very different and very rich compared with exciton behavior in inorganic semiconductor crystals. Due to the high degree of variability of organic systems themselves, the exciton not only exerts changes on molecules that carry it but undergoes its own changes during all phases of its lifetime, that is, birth, conversion and transport, and decay. The goal of this review is to give a systematic and comprehensive view on exciton behavior in π-conjugated molecules and molecular assemblies at all phases of exciton evolution with emphasis on rates typical for this dynamic picture and various consequences of the above dynamics. To uncover the rich variety of exciton behavior, details of exciton formation, exciton transport, exciton energy conversion, direct and reverse intersystem crossing, and radiative and nonradiative decay are considered in different systems, where these processes lead to or are influenced by static and dynamic disorder, charge distribution symmetry breaking, photoinduced reactions, electron and proton transfer, structural rearrangements, exciton coupling with vibrations and intermediate particles, and exciton dissociation and annihilation as well.

Quantifying Exciton Transport in Singlet Fission Diblock Copolymers

Singlet fission (SF) is a mechanism of exciton multiplication in organic chromophores, which has potential to drive highly efficient optoelectronic devices. Creating effective device architectures that operate by SF critically depends on electronic interactions across multiple length scales─from individual molecules to interchromophore interactions that facilitate multiexciton dephasing and exciton diffusion toward donor-acceptor interfaces. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the underpinnings of multiexciton transport and interfacial energy transfer in multichromophore systems. Interestingly, block copolymers (BCPs) can be designed to control multiscale interactions by tailoring the nature of the building blocks, yet SF dynamics are not well understood in these macromolecules. Here, we designed diblock copolymers comprising an inherent energy cleft at the interface between a block with pendent pentacene chromophores and an additional block with pendent tetracene chromophores. The singlet and triplet energy offset between the two blocks creates a driving force for exciton transport along the BCP chain in dilute solution. Using time-resolved optical spectroscopy, we have quantified the yields of key energy transfer steps, including both singlet and triplet energy transfer processes across the pentacene-tetracene interface. From this modular BCP architecture, we correlate the energy transfer time scales and relative yields with the length of each block. The ability to quantify these energy transfer processes provides valuable insights into exciton transport at critical length scales between bulk crystalline systems and small-molecule dimers─an area that has been underexplored.

Dicarbonyl anthracenes and phenanthrenes as singlet fission chromophores

Singlet fission is a highly desired process in photovoltaic devices as it can significantly enhance photoelectric conversion efficiency. Exploitation of this process in photovoltaics is hindered by the lack of appropriate chromophores. We used mixed-reference spin-flipping time-dependent density functional theory to investigate five di-carbonyl anthracenes and phenanthrenes, with the purpose to design singlet fission chromophores. Two molecules were found to be promising candidates. For all the dicarbonyl molecules, the oxygen lone pair orbitals were found to be involved in the excited states that are relevant to singlet fission.

Unravelling the role of charge transfer state during ultrafast intersystem crossing in compact organic chromophores

When organic electron donor (D) and acceptor (A) chromophores are linked together, an electron transfer (ET) state can take place. When a short bridge such as one Sigma bond is used to link the donor and the acceptor, complete charge separation is difficult to access and one usually observes an intramolecular charge transfer (CT) state instead. Due to the inevitable coupling between the donor and the acceptor in compact organic chromophores, the most common decay pathway for the CT state is charge recombination, which may lead to a distinct longer wavelength fluorescence emission or non-radiative dissipation of the excited state energy. However, recent studies have shown that unique excited state dynamics can be observed when the CT state is involved during both forward and backward intersystem crossing (ISC) from singlet excited states to triplet excited states in organic chromophores. Analysis of the mechanism for ISC involving the CT state has received much attention over the last decade. In this perspective, we present a collection of molecular design rationales, spectroscopy and theoretical investigations that provide insights into the mechanism of the ISC involving the CT state in compact organic chromophores. We hope that this perspective will prove beneficial for researchers to design novel compact organic chromophores with a predictable ISC property for future biochemical and optoelectronic applications.

Near-Unity Triplet Generation Promoted via Spiro-Conjugation

An intersystem crossing (ISC) rate constant of 1.0×10¹¹  s^-1 was previously registered with a spiro-bis-benzophenone scaffold. Triplet generation efficiency could be further enhanced by stabilizing the spiro-charge-transfer (CT) state and rationally designing spiro-compounds (SCTs) that consist of electron-rich diphenyl ether as the spiro-CT donor and electron-deficient dinaphthyl ketone as the spiro-CT acceptor. Through fine-tuning of the energy level between the CT and high energy triplet states, near-unity triplet generation quantum yield was achieved and the underlying ISC mechanism is revealed by using ultrafast spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. Potential triplet sensitizing application was demonstrated in SCTs. Our findings suggest that a spiro-bichromophoric molecular system with an enhanced spiro-charge transfer warrants efficient triplet generation and is a powerful strategy of heavy-atom-free triplet sensitizers with predictable ISC properties.

An Organic Host-Guest System Producing Room-Temperature Phosphorescence at the Parts-Per-Billion Level

Manipulation of long-lived triplet excitons in organic molecules is key to applications including next-generation optoelectronics, background-free bioimaging, information encryption, and photodynamic therapy. However, for organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), which stems from triplet excitons, it is still difficult to simultaneously achieve efficiency and lifetime enhancement on account of weak spin-orbit coupling and rapid nonradiative transitions, especially in the red and near-infrared region. Herein, we report that a series of fluorescent naphthalimides-which did not originally show observable phosphorescence in solution, as aggregates, in polymer films, or in any other tested host material, including heavy-atom matrices at cryogenic temperatures-can now efficiently produce ultralong RTP (ϕ=0.17, τ=243 ms) in phthalimide hosts. Notably, red RTP (λ_RTP =628 nm) is realized at a molar ratio of less than 10 parts per billion, demonstrating an unprecedentedly low guest-to-host ratio where efficient RTP can take place in molecular solids.

Theoretical Study on Singlet Fission in Aromatic Diaza s-Indacene Dimers

We theoretically show that diaza (N₂)-substitution to s-indacene with 4n π-electrons, by which the number of π-electrons in N₂-s-indacene amounts to 4n+2, is a new strategy to design efficient singlet fission (SF) molecules. By N₂-substitution, the diradical character and the exchange integral are found to be tuned moderately, leading to satisfying the excitation energy level matching condition for SF with a large triplet excitation energy. On the basis of the effective electronic coupling related to the SF rate, we explore the optimal slip-stack dimer packings for fast SF. Their underlying mechanisms are well understood from the odd-electron density, resonance structure, and frontier orbital distribution, as the functions of the N₂-substituted positions. Furthermore, aromaticities of N₂-s-indacenes are evaluated explicitly on the basis of the magnetically induced current. Although N₂-s-indacenes display strengths of aromaticities similar to that of anthracene, a local decrease in aromaticity is found to correlate to the spatial feature of diradical character, i.e., odd-electron density. The present findings not only newly propose N₂-s-indacenes as feasible SF molecules but also contribute to comprehending the interplay between aromaticity and diradical electronic structures contributing to SF.

High-Lying 31Ag Dark-State-Mediated Singlet Fission

Singlet fission (SF), the conversion of one high-energy singlet to two low-energy triplets, provides the potential to increase the efficiency of photovoltaic devices. In the SF chromophores with C_2h symmetry, exemplified by polyenes, singlet-to-triplet conversion generally involves a low-lying 2¹A_g dark state, which serves as either a multiexciton (ME) intermediate to promote the SF process or a parasitic trap state to shunt excited-state populations via internal conversion. This controversial behavior calls for a deep understanding of dark-state-related photophysics involving the higher-lying singlet state. However, the optical "dark" and "transient" nature of these dark states and strong correlation feature of double exciton species make their characterization and interpretation challenging from both experimental and computational perspectives. In the present work combining transient spectroscopy and multireference electronic structure calculations (XDW-CASPT2), we addressed a new photophysical model, i.e., a high-lying 3¹A_g dark-state-mediated ultrafast SF process in the benzodipyrrolidone (BDPP) skeleton. Such a 3¹A_g dark state with distinctive double excitation character, described as the ME state, could be populated from the initial 1¹B_u bright state on an ultrafast time scale given the quasi-degeneracy and intersection of the two electronic states. Furthermore, the suitable optical band gap and triplet energy, high triplet yield, and excellent photostability render BDPP a promising SF candidate for photovoltaic devices. These results not only enrich the arsenal of SF materials but also shed new insights into the understanding of dark-state-related photophysics, which could promote the development of new SF-active materials.

Exploring the State Space Structure of Multiple Spins via Modular Tensor Diagram Approach: Going beyond the Exciton Pair State

Fully understanding of multistate quantum systems could become formidable if not impossible as the system dimensionality increases. One ideal strategy to comprehend complex systems is to transform the system representation into a more structural one so that major characteristics, connections, and even underlying mechanisms can stand out from the huge unstructured information, e.g., the construction of spin eigenfunctions for a system of multiple spins through the diagonalization of the system Hamiltonian matrix. Here, instead of direct matrix diagonalization, the recently developed modular tensor diagram approach is applied to reorganize the state space structure of multispin systems, extending previous investigations on exciton pair states to exciton trimer states. This implementation demonstrates that the proposed approach not only provides a systematical way to transform the high dimensional multistate system into a well organized structure based on basic (exciton) modules but also paves the way to further analysis on potential applications. For example, the analysis on the state space of the exciton trimer system suggests a possible scheme to improve the laser performance via single fission involving multiexcitations and/or multiple fission steps.

Device-Based Probe of Triplet Exciton Diffusion in Singlet Fission Materials

Probing triplet transport in singlet fission materials can be challenging due to the presence of multiple diffusing species. We present a device-based method to measure the intrinsic triplet diffusion length (L_D) in organic semiconductor thin films exhibiting singlet fission. Triplet states are optically injected into the singlet fission material of interest via energy transfer from an adjacent thin film characterized by strong spin-orbit coupling. Injected triplets migrate through the full thickness of the material before undergoing dissociation at a donor-acceptor interface. By modeling the ratio of injector and acceptor photocurrent as a function of layer thickness, the triplet L_D is extracted separate from processes of unknown efficiency including singlet fission and diffusion. In considering three archetypical fission systems, a wide range is found for the triplet L_D, ranging from 3.3 ± 0.4 nm for 5,12-bis((triisopropylsilyl)ethynyl)tetracene to 17.1 ± 1.3 nm for pentacene and 32.1 ± 2.6 nm for tetracene.

Planarity and Length of the Bridge Control Rate and Efficiency of Intramolecular Singlet Fission in Pentacene Dimers

Singlet fission (SF) improves the power conversion efficiency of optoelectronic devices by converting high-energy photons into two triplet excitons. SF dynamics and efficiency (Φ) are controlled by various factors. Here, the effect of planarity and length of the bridge in pentacene dimers on the intramolecular SF (iSF) process was investigated by synthesizing the dimers connected by bridges having fluorene (FL-PD, planar), methyl-substituted biphenyl (MBP-PD, twisted), and diphenyl acetylene (DPA-PD, longer) groups and characterizing their excited-state relaxation dynamics using nanosecond and femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. Transient absorption studies reveal that iSF dynamics of FL-PD having a planar bridge are ∼787 times faster (187 ps) and exhibit higher Φ (198%) by feasible electronic coupling, compared to MBP-PD possessing a twisted bridge showing a low Φ of ∼16%. However compared to FL-PD, iSF dynamics of DPA-PD with an increase of bridge length are slower by an order (1.09 ns) and show comparable Φ of 185% through extended conjugation. Thus, the planarity and length of the bridge in pentacene dimers control the rate and efficiency of the iSF process.
