Abstract
Active colloids with the ability to self-propel and collectively organize are emerging as indispensable elements in microrobotics and soft matter physics. For chemically powered colloids, their activity is often induced by gradients of chemical species in the particle's vicinity. The direct manipulation of these gradients, however, presents a considerable challenge, thereby limiting the extent to which active colloids can be controlled. Here, we introduce a series of rationally designed molecules, denoted as chemical auxiliary (CA), that intervene with specific chemical gradients and thus unveil new capabilities for regulating the behaviors of photocatalytic active colloids. We show that CA can alter the diffusiophoretic and osmotic interactions between active colloids and their subsequent self-organization. Also, CA can tune the self-propulsion of active particles, enabling a record high propulsion speed of over 100 μm/s and endowing high salt tolerance. Furthermore, CA is instrumental in establishing dynamic, competing gradients around active particles, which signifies an in situ, noninvasive, and reversible strategy for reconfiguring between modes of colloidal activity.

Abstract
A long-standing goal in colloidal active matter is to understand how gradients in fuel concentration influence the motion of phoretic Janus particles. Here, we present a theoretical description of the motion of a spherical phoretic Janus particle in the presence of a radial gradient of the chemical solute driving self-propulsion. Radial gradients are a geometry relevant to many scenarios in active matter systems and naturally arise due to the presence of a point source or sink of fuel. We derive an analytical solution for the Janus particle's velocity and quantify the influence of the radial concentration gradient on the particle's trajectory. Compared to a phoretic Janus particle in a linear gradient in fuel concentration, we uncover a much richer set of dynamic behaviors including circular orbits and trapped stationary states. We identify the ratio of the phoretic mobilities between the two domains of the Janus particle as a central quantity in tuning their dynamics. Our results provide a path for developing optimum protocols for tuning the dynamics of phoretic Janus particles and mixing fluid at the microscale. In addition, this work suggests a method for quantifying the surface properties of phoretic Janus particles, which have proven to be challenging to probe experimentally.

Abstract
Thrombotic cardiovascular diseases are a prevalent factor contributing to both physical impairment and mortality. Thrombolysis and ischemic mitigation have emerged as leading contemporary therapeutic approaches for addressing the consequences of ischemic injury and reperfusion damage. Herein, an innovative cellular-cloaked spermatozoon-driven microcellular submarine (SPCS), comprised of multimodal motifs, was designed to integrate nano-assembly thrombolytics with an immunomodulatory ability derived from innate magnetic hyperthermia. Rheotaxis-based navigation was utilized to home to and cross the clot barrier, and finally accumulate in ischemic vascular organs, where the thrombolytic motif was "switched-on" by the action of thrombus magnetic red blood cell-driven magnetic hyperthermia. In a murine model, the SPCS system combining innate magnetic hyperthermia demonstrated the capacity to augment delivery efficacy, produce nanotherapeutic outcomes, exhibit potent thrombolytic activity, and ameliorate ischemic tissue damage. These findings underscore the multifaceted potential of our designed approach, offering both thrombolytic and ischemia-mitigating effects. Given its extended therapeutic effects and thrombus-targeting capability, this biocompatible SPCS system holds promise as an innovative therapeutic agent for enhancing efficacy and preventing risks after managing thrombosis.

Abstract
Ultrasmall nanomotors (<100 nm) are highly desirable nanomachines for their size-specific advantages over their larger counterparts in applications spanning nanomedicine, directed assembly, active sensing, and environmental remediation. While there are extensive studies on motors larger than 100 nm, the design and understanding of ultrasmall nanomotors have been scant due to the lack of high-resolution imaging of their propelled motions with orientation and shape details resolved. Here, we report the imaging of the propelled motions of catalytically powered ultrasmall nanomotors─hundreds of them─at the nanometer resolution using liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy. These nanomotors are Pt nanoparticles of asymmetric shapes ("tadpoles" and "boomerangs"), which are colloidally synthesized and observed to be fueled by the catalyzed decomposition of NaBH4 in solution. Statistical analysis of the orientation and position trajectories of fueled and unfueled motors, coupled with finite element simulation, reveals that the shape asymmetry alone is sufficient to induce local chemical concentration gradient and self-diffusiophoresis to act against random Brownian motion. Our work elucidates the colloidal design and fundamental forces involved in the motions of ultrasmall nanomotors, which hold promise as active nanomachines to perform tasks in confined environments such as drug delivery and chemical sensing.

Abstract
Self-propelled micro/nanomotors (MNMs) have shown great application potential in biomedicine, sensing, environmental remediation, etc. In the past decade, various strategies or technologies have been used to prepare and functionalize MNMs. However, the current preparation strategies of the MNMs were mainly following the pre-designed methods based on specific tasks to introduce expected functional parts on the various micro/nanocarriers, which lacks a universal platform and common features, making it difficult to apply to different application scenarios. Here, we have developed a modular assembly strategy based on host-guest chemistry, which enables the on-demand construction of imaging-trackable nanomotors mounted with suitable driving and imaging modules using a universal assembly platform, according to different application scenarios. These assembled nanomotors exhibited enhanced diffusion behavior driven by enzymatic reactions. The loaded imaging functions were used to dynamically trace the swarm motion behavior of assembled nanomotors with corresponding fuel conditions both in vitro and in vivo. The modular assembly strategy endowed with host-guest interaction provides a universal approach to producing multifunctional MNMs in a facile and controllable manner, which paves the way for the future development of MNMs systems with programmable functions.

Abstract
We report the hierarchical assembly of a chloroplast-derived rotary FoF1-ATPase motor-propelled flasklike pentosan colloidal motor (FPCM) with the ability of the synthesis, storage, and triggered release of biological energy currency ATP. These streamlined and submicrometer-sized hollow flasklike pentosan colloidal motors are prepared by combining a soft-template-based hydrothermal polymerization with a vacuum infusion of chloroplast-derived proteoliposomes containing rotary FoF1-ATPase motors. The generation of proton motive force across the proteoliposomes by injecting an acidic buffer solution promotes the rotation of FoF1-ATPase motors to drive the self-propelled motion of FPCMs, accompanying the inner ATP synthesis and storage. These rotary FoF1-ATPase motor-powered FPCMs exhibit a chemotactic behavior by migrating from their neck opening to their round bottom along a proton gradient of the external environment (negative chemotaxis). Such rotary biomolecular motor-driven flasklike pentosan colloidal motors with ATP synthesis and on-demand release make them promising candidates for engineering novel intelligent nanocarriers to actively regulate cellular metabolism.

Abstract
Charged colloidal particles propel themselves through asymmetric fluxes of chemically generated ions on their surface. We show that asymmetry in the surface charge distribution provides an additional mode of self-propulsion at the nanoscale for chemically active particles that produce ionic species. Particles of sizes smaller than or comparable to the Debye length achieve directed self-propulsion through surface charge asymmetry even when ionic flux is uniform over its surface. Janus nanoparticles endowed with both surface charge and ionic flux asymmetries result in enhanced propulsion speeds of the order of μm/s or higher. Our work suggests an alternative avenue for specifying surface properties that optimize self-propulsion in ionic media.

Abstract
Synthetic micromotor has gained substantial attention in biomedicine and environmental remediation. Metal-based degradable micromotor composed of magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) have promise due to their nontoxic fuel-free propulsion, favorable biocompatibility, and safe excretion of degradation products Recent advances in degradable metallic micromotor have shown their fast movement in complex biological media, efficient cargo delivery and favorable biocompatibility. A noteworthy number of degradable metal-based micromotors employ bubble propulsion, utilizing water as fuel to generate hydrogen bubbles. This novel feature has projected degradable metallic micromotors for active in vivo drug delivery applications. In addition, understanding the degradation mechanism of these micromotors is also a key parameter for their design and performance. Its propulsion efficiency and life span govern the overall performance of a degradable metallic micromotor. Here we review the design and recent advancements of metallic degradable micromotors. Furthermore, we describe the controlled degradation, efficient in vivo drug delivery, and built-in acid neutralization capabilities of degradable micromotors with versatile biomedical applications. Moreover, we discuss micromotors' efficacy in detecting and destroying environmental pollutants. Finally, we address the limitations and future research directions of degradable metallic micromotors.

Herein, we report a biocatalytic nanomotor based on a covalent-organic framework (COF) that demonstrates intelligent and switchable motion triggered by a blue-to-red light switch. Consequently, when exposed to blue light, the nanomotor significantly enhances the removal of contaminants in aqueous solutions due to its elevated mobility. Conversely, it effectively deactivates its motion and contaminant removal upon exposure to red light. This study explores the heterogeneous assembly strategy of the COF-based nanomotor and its light-controlled propulsion performance and provides a novel strategy for the regulation of movement, offering valuable insights for the design and practical applications of nanomotors.

Abstract
Self-propelled nanoparticles moving through liquids offer the possibility of creating advanced applications where such nanoswimmers can operate as artificial molecular-sized motors. Achieving control over the motion of nanoswimmers is a crucial aspect for their reliable functioning. While the directionality of micron-sized swimmers can be controlled with great precision, steering nano-sized active particles poses a real challenge. One of the reasons is the existence of large fluctuations of active velocity at the nanoscale. Here, we describe a mechanism that, in the presence of a ratchet potential, transforms these fluctuations into a net current of active nanoparticles. We demonstrate the effect using a generic model of self-propulsion powered by chemical reactions. The net motion along the easy direction of the ratchet potential arises from the coupling of chemical and mechanical processes and is triggered by a constant, transverse to the ratchet, force. The current magnitude sensitively depends on the amplitude and the periodicity of the ratchet potential and the strength of the transverse force. Our results highlight the importance of thermodynamically consistent modeling of chemical reactions in active matter at the nanoscale and suggest new ways of controlling dynamics in such systems.

Abstract
The emergence of "nanomotors", "nanomachines", and "nanorobotics" has transformed dynamic nanoparticle research, driving a transition from passive to active and intelligent nanoscale systems. This review examines two critical fields: the investigation of airborne particles, significant contributors to air pollution, and the rapidly emerging domain of catalytic and field-controlled nano- and micromotors. We examine the basic concepts of nano- and micromachines in motion and envision their possible use in a gaseous medium to trap and neutralize hazardous particulates. While past studies described the application of nanotechnology and nanomotors in various scenarios, airborne nano/micromachine motion and their control have yet to be thoroughly explored. This review intends to promote multidisciplinary research on nanomachines' propulsion and task-oriented applications, highlighting their relevance in obtaining a cleaner atmospheric environment, a critical component to consider for human health.

Abstract
The increasing use of plastics has led to the accumulation of plastic waste in the oceans, resulting in significant global environmental challenges associated with microplastic pollution. Micromotors, capable of capturing and removing microplastics from aquatic systems, have emerged as a promising solution to addressing this problem. This research aims to analyze the factors affecting the speed of micromotors, including size, morphology, and surface structure, while elucidating the underlying mechanisms governing micromotor propulsion to develop efficient and ecofriendly micromotors. In this study, we systematically manipulate various parameters by modifying the synthesis method of hematite-based micromotors, subsequently comparing their propulsion speeds and uncovering the precise role of these parameters in determining the micromotor performance. Furthermore, we shed light on the intricate interplay between drag force and propulsive force, demonstrating how these forces vary under different H2O2 conditions. These findings provide valuable insights into the design of efficient micromotors tailored for dynamic aquatic environments.

Abstract
Micro/nanobots are integrated devices developed from engineered nanomaterials that have evolved significantly over the past decades. They can potentially be pre-programmed to operate robustly at numerous hard-to-reach organ/tissues/cellular sites for multiple bioengineering applications such as early disease diagnosis, precision surgeries, targeted drug delivery, cancer therapeutics, bio-imaging, biomolecules isolation, detoxification, bio-sensing, and clearing up clogged arteries with high soaring effectiveness and minimal exhaustion of power. Several techniques have been introduced in recent years to develop programmable, biocompatible, and energy-efficient micro/nanobots. Therefore, the primary focus of most of these techniques is to develop hybrid micro/nanobots that are an optimized combination of purely synthetic or biodegradable bots suitable for the execution of user-defined tasks more precisely and efficiently. Recent progress has been illustrated here as an overview of a few of the achievable construction principles to be used to make biomedical micro/nanobots and explores the pivotal ventures of nanotechnology-moderated development of catalytic autonomous bots. Furthermore, it is also foregrounding their advancement offering an insight into the recent trends and subsequent prospects, opportunities, and challenges involved in the accomplishments of the effective multifarious bioengineering applications.

Abstract
Microrobots, untethered miniature devices capable of performing tasks at the microscale, have gained significant attention in the fields of robotics and biomedicine. These devices hold immense potential for various industrial and scientific applications, including targeted drug delivery and cell manipulation. In this study, we present a novel magnetic rolling helical microrobot specifically designed for bio-compatible cell patterning. Our microrobot incorporates both open-loop and closed-loop control mechanisms, providing flexible, precise, and rapid control for various applications. Through experiments, we demonstrate the microrobot's ability to manipulate cells by pushing them while rolling and arranging cells into desired patterns. This result is particularly significant as it has implications for diverse biological applications such as tissue engineering and organoid development. Moreover, we showcase the effectiveness of our microrobot in a closed-loop control system, where it successfully follows a predetermined path from an origin to a destination. The combination of cellular manipulation capabilities and trajectory-tracking performance underlines the versatility and potential of our magnetic rolling helical microrobot. The ability to control and navigate the microrobot with high precision opens up new possibilities for advanced biomedical applications. These findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge in microbotics and pave the way for further research and development in the field.

Abstract
Magnetoelectric (ME) small-scale robotic devices attract great interest from the scientific community due to their unique properties for biomedical applications. Here, novel ME nano hetero-structures based on the biocompatible magnetostrictive MnFe2 O4 (MFO) and ferroelectric Ba0.85 Ca0.15 Zr0.1 Ti0.9 O3 (BCZT) are developed solely via the hydrothermal method for the first time. An increase in the temperature and duration of the hydrothermal synthesis results in increasing the size, improving the purity, and inducing morphology changes of MFO nanoparticles (NPs). A successful formation of a thin epitaxial BCZT-shell with a 2-5 nm thickness is confirmed on the MFO NPs (77 ± 14 nm) preliminarily treated with oleic acid (OA) or polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), whereas no shell is revealed on the surface of pristine MFO NPs. High magnetization is revealed for the developed ME NPs based on PVP- and OA-functionalized MFO NPs (18.68 ± 0.13 and 20.74 ± 0.22 emu g-1 , respectively). Moreover, ME NPs demonstrate 95% degradation of a model pollutant Rhodamine B within 2.5 h under an external AC magnetic field (150 mT, 100 Hz). Thus, the developed biocompatible core-shell ME NPs of MFO and BCZT can be considered as a promising tool for non-invasive biomedical applications, environmental remediation, and hydrogen generation for renewable energy sources.

Abstract
In the microscopic world, synthetic micro/nanomotors (MNMs) can convert a variety of energy sources into driving forces to help humans perform a number of complex tasks with greater ease and efficiency. These tiny machines have attracted tremendous attention in the field of drug delivery, minimally invasive surgery, in vivo sampling, and environmental management. By modifying their surface materials and functionalizing them with bioactive agents, these MNMs can also be transformed into dynamic micro/nano-biosensors that can detect biomolecules in real-time with high sensitivity. The extensive range of operations and uses combined with their minuscule size have opened up new avenues for tackling intricate analytical difficulties. Here, in this review, various driving methods are briefly introduced, followed by a focus on intelligent detection techniques based on MNMs. And we discuss the distinctive advantages, current issues, and challenges associated with MNM-based intelligent detection. It is believed that the future advancements of MNMs will greatly impact the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases.

Micro-/nanorobots (MNRs) are envisioned to act as "motile-targeting" platforms for biomedical tasks due to their ability to propel and navigate in challenging, hard-to-reach biological environments. However, it remains a great challenge for current swarming MNRs to accurately report and regulate therapeutic doses during disease treatment. Here we present the development of swarming multifunctional heater-thermometer nanorobots (HT-NRs) and their application in precise feedback photothermal hyperthermia delivery. The HT-NRs are designed as photothermal-responsive photonic nanochains consisting of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles arranged periodically in one dimension and encapsulated in a temperature-responsive hydrogel shell. The HT-NRs exhibit energetic and controllable swarming motions under a rotating magnetic field, while simultaneously functioning as motile nanoheaters and nanothermometers, utilizing their photothermal conversion and (photo)thermal-responsive structural color changes (photothermochromism). Consequently, the HT-NRs can be quickly deployed to a remote target area (e.g., a superficial tumor lesion) using their collective motion and selectively eliminate diseased cells in a specific targeted region by utilizing their self-reporting photothermochromism as visual feedback for precisely regulating external light irradiation. This work may inspire the development of intelligent multifunctional theranostic micro-/nanorobots and their practical applications in precise disease treatment.

Abstract
The field of micro-/nanorobotics has attracted extensive interest from a variety of research communities and witnessed enormous progress in a broad array of applications ranging from basic research to global healthcare and to environmental remediation and protection. In particular, micro-/nanoscale robots provide an enabling platform for the development of next-generation chemical and biological sensing modalities, owing to their unique advantages as programmable, self-sustainable, and/or autonomous mobile carriers to accommodate and promote physical and chemical processes. In this review, we intend to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art development in this area and share our perspective in the future trend. This review starts with a general introduction of micro-/nanorobotics and the commonly used methods for propulsion of micro-/nanorobots in solution, along with the commonly used methods in their fabrication. Next, we comprehensively summarize the current status of the micro/nanorobotic research in relevance to chemical and biological sensing (e.g., motion-based sensing, optical sensing, and electrochemical sensing). Following that, we provide an overview of the primary challenges currently faced in the micro-/nanorobotic research. Finally, we conclude this review by providing our perspective detailing the future application of soft robotics in chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract
Oral administration is a convenient administration route for gastrointestinal disease therapy with good patient compliance. But the nonspecific distribution of the oral drugs may cause serious side effects. In recent years, oral drug delivery systems (ODDS) have been applied to deliver the drugs to the gastrointestinal disease sites with decreased side effects. However, the delivery efficiency of ODDS is tremendously limited by physiological barriers in the gastrointestinal sites, such as the long and complex gastrointestinal tract, mucus layer, and epithelial barrier. Micro/nanomotors (MNMs) are micro/nanoscale devices that transfer various energy sources into autonomous motion. The outstanding motion characteristics of MNMs inspired the development of targeted drug delivery, especially the oral drug delivery. However, a comprehensive review of oral MNMs for the gastrointestinal diseases therapy is still lacking. Herein, the physiological barriers of ODDS were comprehensively reviewed. Afterward, the applications of MNMs in ODDS for overcoming the physiological barriers in the past 5 years were highlighted. Finally, future perspectives and challenges of MNMs in ODDS are discussed as well. This review will provide inspiration and direction of MNMs for the therapy of gastrointestinal diseases, pushing forward the clinical application of MNMs in oral drug delivery.

Abstract
Microorganisms display nonequilibrium predator-prey behaviors, such as chasing-escaping and schooling via chemotactic interactions. Even though artificial systems have revealed such biomimetic behaviors, switching between them by control over chemotactic interactions is rare. Here, a spindle-like iron-based metal-organic framework (MOF) colloidal motor which self-propels in glucose and H2 O2 , triggered by UV light is reported. These motors display intrinsic UV light-triggered fuel-dependent chemotactic interactions, which are used to tailor the collective dynamics of active-passive colloidal mixtures. In particular, the mixtures of active MOF motors with passive colloids exhibit distinctive "chasing-escaping" or "schooling" behaviors, depending on glucose or hydrogen peroxide being used as the fuel. The transition in the collective behaviors is attributed to an alteration in the sign of ionic diffusiophoretic interactions, resulting from a change in the ionic clouds produced. This study offers a new strategy on tuning the communication between active and passive colloids, which holds substantial potentials for fundamental research in active matter and practical applications in cargo delivery, chemical sensing, and particle segregation.

Abstract
Nanomotors have been extensively explored for various applications in nanomedicine, especially in cargo transportation. Motile properties enable them to deliver pharmaceutical ingredients more efficiently to the targeted site. However, it still remains a challenge to design motor systems that are therapeutically active and can also be effectively traced when taken up by cells. Here, we designed a nanomotor with integrated fluorescence and therapeutic potential based on biodegradable polymersomes equipped with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) agents. The AIE segments provided the polymersomes with autofluorescence, facilitating the visualization of cell uptake. Furthermore, the membrane structure enabled the reshaping of the AIE polymersomes into asymmetric, peanut-shaped polymersomes. Upon laser irradiation, these peanut polymersomes not only displayed fluorescence, but also produced reactive oxygen species (ROS). Because of their specific shape, the ROS gradient induced motility in these particles. As ROS is also used for cancer cell treatment, the peanut polymersomes not only acted as delivery vehicles but also as therapeutic agents. As an integrated platform, these peanut polymersomes therefore represent an interesting delivery system with biomedical potential.

Abstract
Early detection and diagnosis of many cancers is very challenging. Late stage detection of a cancer always leads to high mortality rates. It is imperative to develop novel and more sensitive and effective diagnosis and therapeutic methods for cancer treatments. The development of new cancer treatments has become a crucial aspect of medical advancements. Nanobots, as one of the most promising applications of nanomedicines, are at the forefront of multidisciplinary research. With the progress of nanotechnology, nanobots enable the assembly and deployment of functional molecular/nanosized machines and are increasingly being utilized in cancer diagnosis and therapeutic treatment. In recent years, various practical applications of nanobots for cancer treatments have transitioned from theory to practice, from in vitro experiments to in vivo applications. In this paper, we review and analyze the recent advancements of nanobots in cancer treatments, with a particular emphasis on their key fundamental features and their applications in drug delivery, tumor sensing and diagnosis, targeted therapy, minimally invasive surgery, and other comprehensive treatments. At the same time, we discuss the challenges and the potential research opportunities for nanobots in revolutionizing cancer treatments. In the future, medical nanobots are expected to become more sophisticated and capable of performing multiple medical functions and tasks, ultimately becoming true nanosubmarines in the bloodstream.

Abstract
Self-propelled chemical micro/nanomotors (MNMs) have demonstrated considerable potential in targeted drug delivery, (bio)sensing, and environmental remediation due to their autonomous nature and possible intelligent self-targeting behaviors (e.g., chemotaxis and phototaxis). However, these MNMs are commonly limited by their primary propulsion mechanisms of self-electrophoresis and electrolyte self-diffusiophoresis, making them prone to quenching in high electrolyte environments. Thus, the swarming behaviors of chemical MNMs in high-electrolyte media remain underexplored, despite their potential to enable the execution of complex tasks in high-electrolyte biological media or natural waters. In this study, we develop ultrasmall tubular nanomotors that exhibit ion-tolerant propulsions and collective behaviors. Upon vertical upward UV irradiation, the ultrasmall Fe2O3 tubular nanomotors (Fe2O3 TNMs) demonstrate positive superdiffusive photogravitaxis and can further self-organize into nanoclusters near the substrate in a reversible manner. After self-organization, the Fe2O3 TNMs exhibit a pronounced emergent behavior, allowing them to switch from random superdiffusions to ballistic motions near the substrate. Even at a high electrolyte concentration (Ce), the ultrasmall Fe2O3 TNMs retain a relatively thick electrical double layer (EDL) compared to their size, and the electroosmotic slip flow in their EDL is strong enough to propel them and induce phoretic interactions among them. As a result, the nanomotors can rapidly concentrate near the substrate and then gather into motile nanoclusters in high-electrolyte environments. This work opens a gate for designing swarming ion-tolerant chemical nanomotors and may expedite their applications in biomedicine and environmental remediation.

Constituted mainly of a low-melting lipid and a high-melting lipid together with cholesterol, these liposomes maintain stable Janus configuration at room temperature as a result of lipid liquid-liquid phase separation. Local placement of enzymes such as horseradish peroxidase is realized via affinity binding between avidin and biotin, the latter as a lipid conjugate sorted specifically into one domain of these Janus liposomes as a minor component. In the presence of the substrate, hydrogen peroxide, these enzyme-decorated Janus liposomes undergo directional motion, yielding velocities exceeding thermal diffusion by three folds in some cases. Experimental details on liposome size control, motor assembly, and substrate distribution are presented; effects of key experimental factors on liposome motion, such as substrate concentration and liposome Janus ratio, are also examined. This work thus provides a viable approach to building asymmetrical lipid-assembled, enzyme-attached colloids and, in addition, stresses the importance of asymmetry in achieving particle directional motion.

Abstract
A thrombus is a blood clot that forms in the lumen of an artery or vein, restricting blood flow and causing clinical symptoms. Thrombosis is associated with many life-threatening cardiovascular diseases. However, current clinical therapeutic technologies still have many problems in targeting, enrichment, penetration, and safety to meet the thrombosis treatment needs. Therefore, researchers devote themselves to developing nanosystems loaded with antithrombotic drugs to address this paradox in recent years. Herein, the existing thrombosis treatment technologies are first reviewed; and then, their advantages and disadvantages are outlined based on a brief discussion of thrombosis's definition and formation mechanism. Furthermore, the need and application cases for introducing nanotechnology are discussed, focusing on thrombus-specific targeted ligand modification technology and microenvironment-triggered responsive drug release technology. Then, nanomaterials that can be used to design antithrombotic nanotherapeutic systems are summarized. Moreover, a variety of drug delivery technologies driven by nanomotors in thrombosis therapy is also introduced. Last of all, a prospective discussion on the future development of nanotechnology for thrombosis therapy is highlighted.

Abstract
Diffusiophoresis refers to the phenomenon where colloidal particles move in response to solute concentration gradients. Existing studies on diffusiophoresis, both experimental and theoretical, primarily focus on the movement of colloidal particles in response to one-dimensional solute gradients. In this work, we numerically investigate the impact of two-dimensional solute gradients on the distribution of colloidal particles, i.e., colloidal banding, induced via diffusiophoresis. The solute gradients are generated by spatially arranged sources and sinks that emit/absorb a time-dependent solute molar rate. First we study a dipole system, i.e., one source and one sink, and discover that interdipole diffusion and molar rate decay timescales dictate colloidal banding. At timescales shorter than the interdipole diffusion timescale, we observe a rapid enhancement in particle enrichment around the source due to repulsion from the sink. However, at timescales longer than the interdipole diffusion timescale, the source and sink screen each other, leading to a slower enhancement. If the solute molar rate decays at the timescale of interdipole diffusion, an optimal separation distance is obtained such that particle enrichment is maximized. We find that the partition coefficient of solute at the interface between the source and bulk strongly impacts the optimal separation distance. Surprisingly, the diffusivity ratio of solute in the source and bulk has a much weaker impact on the optimal dipole separation distance. We also examine an octupole configuration, i.e., four sinks and four sources, arranged in a circle, and demonstrate that the geometric arrangement that maximizes enrichment depends on the radius of the circle. If the radius of the circle is small, it is preferred to have sources and sinks arranged in an alternating fashion. However, if the radius of the circle is large, a consecutive arrangement of sources and sinks is optimal. Our numerical framework introduces a novel method for spatially and temporally designing the banded structure of colloidal particles in two dimensions using diffusiophoresis and opens up new avenues in a field that has primarily focused on one-dimensional solute gradients.

Abstract
Gerridae, colloquially called water striders, are a peculiar class of insects characterized by the extraordinary ability to walk on the surface of water bodies. Owing to this capacity, they constitute an ideal source of inspiration for designing untethered microdevices capable of navigating the interface between two fluids. Such steerable micrometric objects can be of great interest for various applications, ranging from the handling of floating objects to the remote control of microreactions and the manipulation of self-assembled monolayers. This paper describes the realization of artificial water striders via an inkjet-assisted electroforming approach. Inkjet deposition patterns the negative mask, which is subsequently filled with different layers of metals through electroforming. One of such layers is the magnetic alloy NiFe, which allows wireless propulsion of the striders by means of externally applied magnetic fields. The magnetic actuation tests prove good maneuverability at the water-air and silicone oil-air interfaces, with superior control over the speed and position of the devices. The surface of the devices is modified to tune its superficial energy in order to maximize buoyancy on these different combinations of fluids. A magnetic field-controlled strider manipulates a droplet and demonstrates collecting oil microdroplets and synthesizing platinum nanoparticles by chemical microreactions. Finally, the remotely operated microrobot could be employed in laboratories as a real avatar of chemists.

Abstract
As one of the typical emerging contaminants, microplastics exist widely in the environment because of their small size and recalcitrance, which has caused various ecological problems. This paper summarizes current adsorption and removal technologies of microplastics in typical aquatic environments, including natural freshwater, marine, drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs), and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and includes abiotic and biotic degradation technologies as one of the removal technologies. Recently, numerous studies have shown that enrichment technologies have been widely used to remove microplastics in natural freshwater environments, DWTPs, and WWTPs. Efficient removal of microplastics via WWTPs is critical to reduce the release to the natural environment as a key connection point to prevent the transfer of microplastics from society to natural water systems. Photocatalytic technology has outstanding pre-degradation effects on microplastics, and the isolated microbial strains or enriched communities can degrade up to 50% or more of pre-processed microplastics. Thus, more research focusing on microplastic degradation could be carried out by combining physical and chemical pretreatment with subsequent microbial biodegradation. In addition, the current recovery technologies of microplastics are introduced in this review. This is incredibly challenging because of the small size and dispersibility of microplastics, and the related technologies still need further development. This paper will provide theoretical support and advice for preventing and controlling the ecological risks mediated by microplastics in the aquatic environment and share recommendations for future research on the removal and recovery of microplastics in various aquatic environments, including natural aquatic environments, DWTPs, and WWTPs.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the most intractable diseases owing to its high mortality rate and lack of effective diagnostic and treatment tools. Advancements in micro-/nanorobot (MNR)-assisted sensing, imaging, and therapeutics offer unprecedented opportunities to develop MNR-based cancer theragnostic platforms. Unlike ordinary nanoparticles, which exhibit Brownian motion in biofluids, MNRs overcome viscous resistance in an ultralow Reynolds number (Re << 1) environment by effective self-propulsion. This unique locomotion property has motivated the advanced design and functionalization of MNRs as a basis for next-generation cancer-therapy platforms, which offer the potential for precise distribution and improved permeation of therapeutic agents. Enhanced barrier penetration, imaging-guided operation, and biosensing are additionally studied to enable the promising cancer-related applications of MNRs. Herein, the recent advances in MNR-based cancer therapy are comprehensively addresses, including actuation engines, diagnostics, medical imaging, and targeted drug delivery; promising research opportunities that can have a profound impact on cancer therapy over the next decade is highlighted.

Abstract
Untethered robots of the size of a few microns have attracted increasing attention for the potential to transform many aspects of manufacturing, medicine, health care, and bioengineering. Previously impenetrable environments have become available for high-resolution in situ and in vivo manipulations as the size of the untethered robots goes down to the microscale. Nevertheless, the independent navigation of several robots at the microscale is challenging as they cannot have onboard transducers, batteries, and control like other multi-agent systems, due to the size limitations. Therefore, various unconventional propulsion mechanisms have been explored to power motion at the nanoscale. Moreover, a variety of combinations of actuation methods has also been extensively studied to tackle different issues. In this survey, we present a thorough review of the recent developments of various dedicated ways to actuate and control multistimuli-enabled microrobots. We have also discussed existing challenges and evolving concepts associated with each technique.

Abstract
Natural biological lumens in the human body, such as blood vessels and the gastrointestinal tract, are important to the delivery of materials. Depending on the anatomic features of these biological lumens, the invention of nano/micromotors could automatically locomote targeted sites for disease treatment and diagnosis. These nano/micromotors are designed to utilize chemical, physical, or even hybrid power in self-propulsion or propulsion by external forces. In this review, the research progress of nano/micromotors is summarized with regard to treatment and diagnosis in different biological lumens. Challenges to the development of nano/micromotors more suitable for specific biological lumens are discussed, and the overlooked biological lumens are indicated for further studies.

Abstract
Miniaturization of synthetic micro/nanomotors (MNMs) brings great application prospects but limits their functionalization ability. Here, we report self-fueled metal organic framework (MOF) micromotors that are endowed with capabilities of self-propulsion and antibacterial therapy by their material's intrinsic properties. The spontaneous degradation of the MOF micromotors in water would release their own constituting components of ions which act as fuels to propel themselves by ionic diffusionphoresis with a high energy conversion efficiency. Meanwhile, the metal cations released from the MOF micromotors can also serve as antibacterial reagents to kill Escherichia coli (E. coli) with motion enhanced efficacy, which could significantly accelerate the wound closure in a bacterially infected wound model in vivo. Our work provides a general guidance for constructing functional MNMs by taking advantage of the motors' own materials to achieve self-propulsion and on-demand task assignments, which would promote future development of highly integrated micro/nanorobotic systems at micro/nanoscale.

Abstract
Microlasers integrated with biological systems have received tremendous attention for their intense light intensity and narrow linewidth recently, serving as a powerful tool for studying complex dynamics and interactions in scattered biological micro-environments. However, manipulation of microlasers with controllable motions and versatile functions remains elusive. Herein, we introduce the concept of motor-like microlasers formed by magnetic-doped liquid crystal droplets, in which the direction and velocity could be controlled by altering internal magnetic nanoparticles or external magnetic fields. Both translational and rotatory motions of the lasing resonator could be continually changed in real-time. Lasing-encoded motors carrying different functions and lasing wavelengths were also achieved. Finally, we demonstrate the potential of motor-like microlasers by functioning as a localized stimulation emission light source to stimulate or illuminate living cells, providing a novel approach for switching on/off light emissions and subcellular imaging. Laser emitting micromotors offer a facile system for precise manipulation of microlasers in biological fluids, providing new insight into the development of programmable on-chip laser devices and laser-emitting intelligent systems.

Abstract
As a class of biocompatible, water-dispersed colloids, liposomes have found widespread applications ranging from food to drug delivery. Adding mobility to these colloids, i.e., liposome micromotors, represents an attractive approach to next-generation liposome carriers with enhanced functionality and effectiveness. Currently, it remains unclear as to the scope of material features useful for building liposome micromotors or how they may differ functionally from their inorganic/polymer counterparts. In this work, we demonstrate liposome active motion taking advantage of mainly a pair of intrinsic material properties associated with these assemblies: lipid phase separation and extraction. We show that global phase separation of ternary lipid systems (such as DPPC/DOPC/cholesterol) within individual liposomes yields stable Janus particles with two distinctive liquid domains. While these anisotropic liposomes undergo pure Brownian diffusion in water, similar to their homogeneous analogues, adding extracting agents, cyclodextrins, to the system triggers asymmetrical cholesterol efflux about the liposomes, setting the latter into active motion. We present detailed analyses of liposome movement and cholesterol extraction kinetics to establish their correlation. We explore various experimental parameters as well as mechanistic details to account for such motion. Our results highlight the rich possibility to hierarchically design lipid-based artificial motors, from individual lipids, to their organization, surface chemistry, and interfacial mechanics.

Abstract
Micro-/nanorobots (MNRs) can be autonomously propelled on demand in complex biological environments and thus may bring revolutionary changes to biomedicines. Fluorescence has been widely used in real-time imaging, chemo-/biosensing, and photo-(chemo-) therapy. The integration of MNRs with fluorescence generates fluorescent MNRs with unique advantages of optical trackability, on-the-fly environmental sensitivity, and targeting chemo-/photon-induced cytotoxicity. This review provides an up-to-date overview of fluorescent MNRs. After the highlighted elucidation about MNRs of various propulsion mechanisms and the introductory information on fluorescence with emphasis on the fluorescent mechanisms and materials, we systematically illustrate the design and preparation strategies to integrate MNRs with fluorescent substances and their biomedical applications in imaging-guided drug delivery, intelligent on-the-fly sensing and photo-(chemo-) therapy. In the end, we summarize the main challenges and provide an outlook on the future directions of fluorescent MNRs. This work is expected to attract and inspire researchers from different communities to advance the creation and practical application of fluorescent MNRs on a broad horizon.

Abstract
We compute the energetic cost of formation of Janus particle structures. Using an approach that couples particle dynamics to the evolution of fuel concentration in the medium, which we consider to be initially inhomogeneous, we show the different types of emerging structures. The energy dissipated in the formation of such structures is obtained from the entropy production rate, which is a non-monotonic function of the fraction of assembled particles and, thus, different in each self-assembly regime. An analysis of the free energy of these particles allows us to establish a thermodynamic criterion of structure formation based on the behavior of chemical potential as a function of the fraction of assembled particles.

Abstract
This article investigates how the acoustic propulsion of cone-shaped colloidal particles that are exposed to a traveling ultrasound wave depends on the viscosity of the fluid surrounding the particles. Using acoustofluidic computer simulations, we found that the propulsion of such nano- and microcones decreases strongly and even changes sign for increasing shear viscosity. In contrast, we found only a weak dependence of the propulsion on the bulk viscosity. The obtained results are in line with the findings of previous theoretical and experimental studies.

Abstract
Self-propelled droplets are of considerable interest as an appropriate model for understanding the self-propulsion of objects in the fields of nonequilibrium physics and nonlinear science. Several research groups have reported the monodirectional motion of droplets, that is, chemotaxis, using stimuli-responsive materials. However, the precise control of chemotaxis remains challenging from the perspective of synthetic chemistry because chemotactic motion is primarily induced by the consumption of reactive oil or surfactants. Herein, we report a chemical system containing pH-responsive fumaric acid derivatives, in which the oil droplet exhibited positive chemotaxis over a wide pH range-from basic to acidic conditions. From the measurements of the interfacial tension between the oil and aqueous phases, it was deduced that the positive chemotaxis was due to heterogeneity in the interfacial tension of the droplet surface, which was accompanied by the production of surface-active compounds in the pH gradient in a linear-type channel.

Abstract
Antithrombotic therapy is confronted with short half-lives of thrombolytic agents and high bleeding risks. Challenges remain in the development of drug delivery systems for thorough destruction of thrombi and timely restoration of blood flow while minimizing side effects. Herein, polydopamine capsule-like micromotors with urokinase (uPA) loadings and Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) grafts (r-u@PCM) were constructed using rod-shaped bacteria as the template, and one single opening was created on each capsule through bacterial ghost (BG) formation. Glucose oxidase and catalase were encapsulated in the large cavity of microcapsules, and their successive oxidation of glucose produced O2 bubbles, which ejected out through the single opening to propel the motion of r-u@PCM. In vitro targeting testing of r-u@PCM shows significant higher accumulations on the activated platelets than those without RGD grafts (u@PCM, 7 folds) or without enzyme loadings (r-u@PC, 11 folds). Compared with the major distribution of r-u@PC on the clot surface, r-u@PCM efficiently penetrates into clots with dense fibrin networks, and near-infrared (NIR) irradiation (r-u@PCM/NIR) promotes thrombus infiltration through increasing uPA release and thermolysis of the networks. Pharmacokinetic study shows that the loading of uPA in r-u@PCM extends the terminal half-life from 24 min to 5.5 h and the bioavailability increased 13 times. In a hindlimb venous thrombosis model, r-u@PCM/NIR treatment promotes uPA accumulations in thrombi and disrupts all the thrombi after 8 h with a full recovery of blood flows. Effective thrombolysis is also achieved even after reducing the uPA dose 5 times. Thus, this is the first attempt to fabricate rod-shaped microcapsule motors through a biologically derived method, including bacterial templating and BG formation-induced opening generation. r-u@PCM/NIR treatment promotes thrombolysis through the photothermal effect, self-propelled infiltration into thrombi, and accelerated local release of uPA, providing a prerequisite for reducing uPA dose and bleeding side effects.

Abstract
The biofilm resistance of microorganisms has severe economic and environmental implications, especially the contamination of facilities associated with human life, including medical implants, air-conditioning systems, water supply systems, and food-processing equipment, resulting in the prevalence of infectious diseases. Once bacteria form biofilms, their antibiotic resistance can increase by 10-1,000-fold, posing a great challenge to the treatment of related diseases. In order to overcome the contamination of bacterial biofilm, destroying the biofilm's matrix so as to solve the penetration depth dilemma of antibacterial agents is the most effective way. Here, a magnetically controlled multifunctional micromotor was developed by using H2O2 as the fuel and MnO2 as the catalyst to treat bacterial biofilm infection. In the presence of H2O2, the as-prepared motors could be self-propelled by the generated oxygen microbubbles. Thereby, the remotely controlled motors could drill into the EPS of biofilm and disrupt them completely with the help of bubbles. Finally, the generated highly toxic •OH could efficiently kill the unprotected bacteria. This strategy combined the mechanical damage, highly toxic •OH, and precise magnetic guidance in one system, which could effectively eliminate biologically infectious fouling in microchannels within 10 min, possessing a wide range of practical application prospects especially in large scale and complex infection sites.

Abstract
“Life-like” nonequilibrium assemblies are of increasing significance, but suffering from limited steerability as they are generally based on micro/nanomotors with inherent asymmetry in chemical composition or geometry, of which the vigorous random Brownian rotations disturb the local interactions. Here, we demonstrate that isotropic photocatalytic micromotors, due to the persistent phoretic flow from the illuminated to shadowed side irrespective of their Brownian rotations, experience light-programmable local interactions (reversibly from attraction to repulsion and/or alignment) depending on the direction of the incident lights. Thus, they can be organized into a variety of tunable nonequilibrium assemblies, such as apolar solids (i.e., immobile colloidal crystal), polar liquids (i.e., phototactic colloidal stream), and polar solids (i.e., phototactic colloidal crystal), which can further be “cut” into a predesigned pattern by utilizing the switching motor-motor interactions at superimposed-light edges. This work facilitates the development of active matters and motile functional microdevices.

Abstract
One of the most important potential applications of motile nano- and microdevices is targeted drug delivery. To realize this, biocompatible particles that can be guided collectively towards a target inside a patient's body are required. Acoustically propelled nano- and microparticles constitute a promising candidate for such biocompatible, artificial motile particles. The main remaining obstacle to targeted drug delivery by motile nano- and microdevices is to also achieve a reliable and biocompatible method for guiding them collectively to their target. Here, we propose such a method. As we confirm by computer simulations, it allows for the remote guiding of large numbers of acoustically propelled particles to a prescribed target by combining a space- and time-dependent acoustic field and a time-dependent magnetic field. The method works without detailed knowledge about the particle positions and for arbitrary initial particle distributions. With these features, it paves the way for the future application of motile particles as vehicles for targeted drug delivery in nanomedicine.

Abstract
This paper demonstrates a manipulation of snowman-shaped soft microrobots under a uniform rotating magnetic field. Each microsnowman robot consists of two biocompatible alginate microspheres with embedded magnetic nanoparticles. The soft microsnowmen were fabricated using a microfluidic device by following a centrifuge-based microfluidic droplet method. Under a uniform rotating magnetic field, the microsnowmen were rolled on the substrate surface, and the velocity response for increasing magnetic field frequencies was analyzed. Then, a microsnowman was rolled to follow different paths, which demonstrated directional controllability of the microrobot. Moreover, swarms of microsnowmen and single alginate microrobots were manipulated under the rotating magnetic field, and their velocity responses were analyzed for comparison.

Abstract
Nanoswimmers are synthetic nanoscale objects that convert the available surrounding free energy to a directed motion. For example, bacteria with various flagella types serve as textbook examples of the minuscule swimmers found in nature. Along these lines, a plethora of artificial hybrid and non-hybrid nanoswimmers have been introduced, and they could find many uses, e.g., for targeted drug delivery systems (TDDSs) and controlled drug treatments. Here, we discuss a certain class of nanoparticles, i.e., functional, capped Janus nanospheres that can be employed as nanoswimmers, their subclasses and properties, as well as their various implementations. A brief outlook is given on different fabrication and synthesis methods, as well as on the diverse compositions used to prepare nanoswimmers, with a focus on the particle types and materials suitable for biomedical applications. Several recent studies have shown remarkable success in achieving temporally and spatially controlled drug delivery in vitro using Janus-particle-based TDDSs. We believe that this review will serve as a concise introductory synopsis for the interested readers. Therefore, we hope that it will deepen the general understanding of nanoparticle behavior in biological matrices.

Abstract
Cancer overlooks are globally one of the most dangerous and life-threatening tribulations. While significant advances have been made in the targeted delivery of anti-cancer medications over the last few years, several challenges, such as low efficacy and strong toxic effects, remain to be addressed. Micro/nanomotors have been thoroughly studied for both effective cancer detection and treatment, as demonstrated by significant advancements in the architecture of smart and functional micro/nanomotor biomedical systems. Able to self-propelled within fluid media, micro/nanomotors have attractive vehicles to maximize the efficacy of tumor delivery. Here, we present the current developments in the delivery, detection, and imaging-guided treatment of micro/nanomotors in the clinical field, including cancer-related specific targeted drug delivery, and then discuss the barriers and difficulties encountered by micro/nanomotors throughout the medical process. Furthermore, this paper addresses the potential growth of micro/nanomotors for medical applications, and sets out the current drawbacks and future research directions for more advancement.

Abstract
We propose a method to modulate the drifting motion of overdamped circle swimmers in steady fluid flows by means of static sinusoidal potentials. Using Langevin formalism, we study drift velocity as a function of potential strength and wavelength with and without diffusional motion. Drift velocity is essentially quantized without diffusion, but in the presence of noise, the displacement per cycle has a continuous range. As a function of dimensionless potential wave number, domains of damped oscillatory and plateau regimes are observed in the drift velocity diagram. At weak potential and fluid velocity less than powered velocity, there is also a regime where drift velocity exceeds the fluid velocity. Methods based on these results can be used to separate biological and artificial circle swimmers based on their dynamical properties.

Abstract
As a novel mobile nanodevice, micro-nano motors (MNMs) can convert the energy of the surrounding environment into mechanical motion. With this unique ability, they promise revolutionary potential in bio-applications including precise drug delivery, bio-sensing, and noninvasive surgery. Yet for practically reaching the target and fulfilling these tasks in dynamically changing bio-environment, environment adaptivity beyond propulsion is important yet challenging. MNMs with taxis behavior/autonomous target-seeking ability offer a desirable solution. These motors can adaptively move to the target location and complete the task. Thanks to the persistent efforts of researchers, tactic MNMs have shown automatic navigation to target under various energy fields, not only in static environments, but also in shear rheological conditions that simulate blood flow. Therefore, tactic motors with self-targeting capability lay a concrete foundation for targeted drug delivery, cell transplantation, and thrombus ablation. This review systematically presents the moving principle, design, and biological applications of tactic MNMs under different energy fields. Through in-depth analysis of state-of-art progress, the obstacles of the field and possible solutions are discussed. With the continuous innovation and breakthroughs of multi-disciplinary researchers, MNMs with taxis behavior are expected to provide a revolutionary solution for cancer and other major diseases in the biomedical field.

Abstract
Effective thrombolysis is critical to rapidly rebuild blood flow for thrombosis patients. Drug delivery systems have been developed to address inadequate pharmacokinetics of thrombolytic agents, but challenges still remain in the timely removal of blood clots regarding the dense fibrin networks. Herein, rod-shaped tubular micromotors were developed to achieve efficient penetration and thorough destruction of thrombi. By using electrospun fiber fragments as the template, urokinase (uPA)-loaded polydopamine (PDA) microtubes with surface decorated fucoidan (FuPDAuPA) were prepared at the aspect ratio of around 2. One E. coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) was assembled into one microtube to construct a FuPDAuPA@EcN hybrid micromotor through PDA adhesion and L-aspartate induction. The pharmacokinetic analysis indicates that the encapsulation of uPA into micromotors extends the half-life from 0.4 to 5.6 h and increases the bioavailability over 10 times. EcN-propelled motion elevates adsorption capacities of FuPDAuPA@EcN for more than four times compared with that of FuPDAuPA. The fucoidan-mediated targeting causes 2-fold higher thrombolysis capacity in vitro and over 10-fold higher uPA accumulation in thrombi in vivo. In the treatment of venous thrombi at mouse hindlimbs, intravenous administration of FuPDAuPA@EcN completely removed blood clots with almost full recovery of blood flows and apparently alleviated tail bleeding. It should be noted that FuPDAuPA@EcN treatment at a reduced uPA dose caused no significant difference in the blood flow rate compared with those of FuPDAuPA. The synergistic action of fucoidan-induced targeting and EcN-driven motion provides a prerequisite for promoting thrombolytic efficacy and reducing uPA dose and bleeding side effect. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The standard treatment to thrombosis patient is intravenous infusion of thrombolytic agents, but the associated bleeding complications and impairment of normal haemostasis greatly offset the therapeutic benefits. Drug delivery systems have been developed to address the limitations of inadequate pharmacokinetics of thrombolytic agents, but challenges still exist in less efficient penetration into dense networks for thorough destruction of thrombi. Up to now only few attempts have been made to construct nano-/micromotors for combating thrombosis and there is no single case that antithrombosis is assisted by bacteria or cells-propelled motors. Herein, bacteria-propelled microtubes were developed to carry urokinase for efficient penetration into blood clots and effective thrombolysis. The synergistic action of bacteria-driven motion and specific ligand-induced targeting holds a promising treatment strategy for life-threatening cardiovascular diseases such as thrombosis and atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Previous studies on ultrasound-propelled nano- and microparticles have considered only systems in which the particle orientation is perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the ultrasound. However, in future applications of these particles, they will typically be able to attain other orientations. Therefore, using direct acoustofluidic simulations, here we study how the propulsion of triangular nano- and microparticles, which are known to have a particularly efficient acoustic propulsion and are therefore promising candidates for future applications, depends on their orientation relative to the propagation direction of a traveling ultrasound wave. Our results reveal that the propulsion of the particles depends strongly on their orientation relative to the direction of wave propagation and that the particles tend to orient perpendicularly to the wave direction. We also address the orientation-averaged translational and angular velocities of the particles, which correspond to the particles' effective propulsion for an isotropic exposure to ultrasound. Our results allow assessment of how free ultrasound-propelled colloidal particles move in three spatial dimensions and thus constitute an important step toward the realization of envisaged future applications of such particles.
