Self-Assembled α-Cyanostilbenes for Advanced Functional Materials

Terminal halogen-containing rod-like liquid crystals: Synthesis, self-assembly, photophysical and mechanochromism properties

Five series of cyanostilbene-based rod-like liquid crystals containing one different terminal atom (H, F, Cl, Br and I) at one end and one terminal aliphatic chain with different numbers of carbon atoms at the other end were reported by Suzuki coupling and Knoevenagel reactions. The influence of terminal halogen atoms and terminal chain length on the self-assembly, AIE behavior, temperature-dependent emission and mechanochromism behavior was explored by POM, DSC, XRD, SEM, absorption spectra and emission spectra. All the compounds are enantiotropic liquid crystals. The lowest non-halogen substituted homologue exhibited solo N phase, but the higher non-halogen substituted homologues exhibited mesogenic transition from SmA phase to N phase upon rising temperature. All the lowest halogen substituted homologues exhibited mesogenic transition from SmA phase to N phase upon rising temperature and all the higher homologues only exhibited SmA. The distinct mesogenic phase transition could be attributed to the intermolecular interaction produced by terminal halogen and the rigidity of the terminal aliphatic chain. All the non-halogen substituted compounds and halogen substituted compounds with smaller terminal halogen atom (F, Cl and Br atom) exhibited AIE behaviors, whereas the iodinated compounds exhibited extremely weak emission in solution and aggregated states due to the heavy atoms effect. These compounds also exhibited distinct solid-state emission with blue or cyan fluorescence, which could be quenched by increasing temperature. The reversible mechanochromism behavior was also achieved in all the compounds. The mechanical force induced quench in emission in non-halogen substituted compounds and halogen substituted compounds with smaller terminal halogen atom (F, Cl and Br atom), whereas enhancement in iodinated compounds. The reversible mechanochromism behavior endowed these compounds with potential applications in rewritable paper and anti-counterfeiting. The interesting properties in these liquid crystals would be attributed to the balance of the halogen-halogen interactions, heavy atom effect, steric-hindrance effect and chain length. These investigations would be helpful to understand the relationship between chemical structures and properties.

Glowing discoveries: Schiff base-cyanostilbene probes illuminating metal ions and biological entities

Schiff bases featuring cyanostilbene units have emerged as versatile and highly effective probes for the selective detection of various metal ions as well as biologically important species. This review comprehensively highlights recent advances in the development and application of the probes, which exhibit remarkable Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE), Twisted Intramolecular Charge Transfer (TICT), and Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT) properties. These unique structural characteristics facilitate their potential applications in the detection of biologically important metal ions such as Zn2+, Fe3+, Cu2+, Hg2+ and Co2+ ions with high sensitivity and selectivity. Furthermore, these probes have demonstrated significant potential in the recognition of vital biological species, including arginine, hydrazine and hypochlorite (ClO-). The present review discusses the underlying detection mechanisms, emphasizing the role of the Schiff base and cyanostilbene moieties for the selective detection of particular biologically important entities. Moreover, this discussion highlights the practical applications, problems, and future directions in this fast-growing field, emphasizing the vital importance of these probes in both analytical chemistry and bioassays.

Designing Dual-State and Aggregation-Induced Emissive Luminogens from Lignocellulosic Biosourced Molecules

Utilizing lignocellulosic biosourced platforms, we synthesized novel cyanostilbene (CS) derivatives featuring the 3,4-dimethoxyphenyl moiety. These derivatives were investigated for their emission properties in both solution and solid states. The two simple CS derivatives exhibit very weak luminescence in solution but significant luminescence in the solid state, indicating distinct Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) characteristic. Furthermore, combining these two CS units, without conjugation and with quasi perpendicular orientation, results in a Dual-State Emission (DSE) fluorophore showing luminescence both in solution and solid states. X-ray crystallography studies on the solid-state compounds reveal a structure-emission relationship, demonstrating that the colour emission correlates with the conformations adopted by the molecules in the solid state, which influence the type of stacking.

Recent advances in tunable solid-state emission based on α-cyanodiarylethenes: from molecular packing regulation to functional development

The design and development of organic solid-state luminescent materials stand as crucial pillars within the realm of contemporary photofunctional materials. Overcoming challenges such as concentration quenching and achieving tailored luminescent properties necessitates a judicious approach to molecular structure design and the strategic utilization of diverse stimuli to modulate molecular packing patterns. Among the myriad candidates, α-cyanodiarylethenes (CAEs) emerge with distinctive solid-state luminescent attributes, capable of forming self-assembled packing structures with varying degrees of π-π stacking. This characteristic endows them with potential in the field of intelligent molecular responsive materials and optoelectronic devices. This tutorial review embarks on an exploration of design strategies geared towards attaining tunable solid-state emission through customized packing of CAEs. It explores the utilization of stimuli responses, including such as mechanical forces, light irradiation, solvent interactions, thermal influences, as well as the utilization of co-assembly methodologies. The overarching aim of this review is to provide a widely applicable platform fostering the flourishing development of modern organic photofunctional materials through integrating principles of molecular engineering, organic optoelectronics, and materials science.

Theoretical Insights into the Structural and Optical Properties of D-π-A-based Cyanostilbene Systems of α and β Variants

The π-conjugated organic molecules containing cyanostilbene motifs have been extensively investigated due to their great potential applications in several optoelectronic and biological fields. Developing efficient molecules in this respect requires strategic structural engineering and a deep understanding of the structure-property relationship at the molecular level. In this context, understanding the impact of positional isomerism in cyanostilbene systems is a fundamental aspect of designing desired materials with improved photophysical properties. Herein, we designed ten donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) type cyanostilbene derivatives (P1 - P10) with different π linkers and compared their structural and optoelectronic properties arising from the positional variations of the -CN group (α and β- variations) through the utilization of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) methods. The topological analyses of the electron density are used to explain the relatively high stability of α isomer compared to that of β. Frontier molecular orbital analysis reveals that 17 molecules tend to show a reduced highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap, and most of them showed a greater nonlinear optical (NLO) character compared to the parent molecule. TDDFT calculations indicate that β isomers show higher absorption maxima compared to their α counterparts. Among all the scrutinized molecules, the absorption maximum extended up to 602 nm for P9 and it possesses the highest first-order hyperpolarizability. This study sheds light on positional isomers and their reactivity, absorption spectra, and NLO properties of D-π-A type architecture that can be suitably tuned by appropriating the π-bridge for practical applications.

Dual-state emission, mechanofluorochromism, and lipid droplet imaging of asymmetric D-π-A-D'-type triads

Dual-state emission (DSE) is an emerging phenomenon wherein organic luminescent molecules display bright emissions in both molecularly isolated and packed states, addressing the challenge associated with the traditional paradigm of dyes with mono-state emission. This study presents the design and synthesis of two unsymmetrical triads, TPCA and TPCT, featuring a D-π-A-D' electronic structure by integrating phenothiazines, triphenylamines, and cyanostilbene. Photophysical assessments reveal that both molecules serve as robust DSEgens, exhibiting strong emissions in both solution and solid phases. TPCA displays ΦTHF 53.2% and Φsolids 43.2%, while TPCT exhibits ΦTHF 49.6% and Φsolids 37.5%. However, due to differences in molecular conformation and packing, they diverge in solid-state emission wavelengths and mechanofluorochromic behavior. In the solid state, TPCA emits strong red fluorescence, contrasting with TPCT, which emits orange fluorescence. Furthermore, TPCA demonstrates significant mechanofluorochromism (MFC), shifting from yellow to yellow-red upon mechanical grinding, while TPCT exhibits negligible MFC owing to conformational distinctions. As robust and low-toxic bioimaging agents, both TPCA and TPCT prove highly effective for lipid-droplet imaging studies. This research contributes valuable insights to the evolving field of DSE materials, elucidating the promising applications and mechanisms governing their versatile emission behaviors.

Photoactuators Based on Plastically Flexible α-Cyanostilbene Molecular Crystals Driven by the Solid-State [2+2] Cycloaddition Reaction

Organic photomechanical molecular crystals are promising candidates for photoactuators, which have potential applications as smart materials in various fields. However, it is still challenging to fabricate photomechanical molecular crystals with flexibility because most of the molecular crystals are brittle and the mechanism of flexible crystals remains controversial. Here, a plastically flexible α-cyanostilbene crystal has been synthesized that can undergo solid-state [2+2] cycloaddition reaction under violet or UV irradiation and exhibits excellent photomechanical bending properties. A hook-shaped crystal can lift 0.7 mg object upward by 1.5 cm, which proves its potential for application as photoactuators. When complex with the agarose polymer, the molecules will be in the form of macroscopic crystals, which can drive the composite films to exhibit excellent photomechanical bending performance. Upon irradiation with UV light, the composite film can quickly lift 18.0 mg object upward by 0.3 cm. The results of this work may facilitate the application of macroscale crystals as photoactuators.

Bioinspired polymeric supramolecular columns as efficient yet controllable artificial light-harvesting platform

Light-harvesting is an indispensable process in photosynthesis, and researchers have been exploring various structural scaffolds to create artificial light-harvesting systems. However, achieving high donor/acceptor ratios for efficient energy transfer remains a challenge as excitons need to travel longer diffusion lengths within the donor matrix to reach the acceptor. Here, we report a polymeric supramolecular column-based light-harvesting platform inspired by the natural light-harvesting of purple photosynthetic bacteria to address this issue. The supramolecular column is designed as a discotic columnar liquid crystalline polymer and acts as the donor, with the acceptor intercalated within it. The modular columnar design enables an ultrahigh donor/acceptor ratio of 20000:1 and an antenna effect exceeding 100. Moreover, the spatial confinement within the supramolecular columns facilitates control over the energy transfer process, enabling dynamic full-color tunable emission for information encryption applications with spatiotemporal regulation security.

Photoinduced fluorescence modulation through controllable intramolecular [2+2] photocycloaddition in single molecules and molecular aggregates

We report a general molecular design strategy of spatial proximity, which allows intramolecular [2+2] photocycloaddition reaction to take place in both single molecules and molecular aggregates. Sharply contrasting photoinduced fluorescence changes in solution and in the solid state were found and attributed to the aggregation-induced quenching property of the monomers and the aggregation-induced emission nature of the photodimers.

Remarkable Off-On Tunable Solid-State Luminescence by the Regulation of Pyrene Dimer

It is always a challenge to achieve "off-on" luminescent switch by regulating non-covalent interactions. Herein, we report a unique strategy for constructing high performance "off-on" tunable luminescent materials utilizing a novel molecule (TFPA) consist of pyrene and cyanostilbene. The pristine crystal of TFPA is almost non-emissive. Upon grinding/UV irradiation, an obvious luminescence enhancement is observed. Theoretical and experimental results revealed the underlying mechanism of this intriguing "off-on" switching behavior. The non-emissive crystal consists of ordered H-aggregates, with adjacent two molecules stacked in an anti-parallel manner and no overlapped area in pyrene moieties. When external force is applied by grinding or internal force is introduced through the photoisomerization, the dimer structures are facilitated with shorter intermolecular distances and better overlapping of pyrene moieties. In addition, the "on" state can recover to "off" state under thermal annealing, showing good reversibility and applicability in intelligence material. The present results promote an in-depth insight between packing structure and photophysical property, and offer an effective strategy for the construction of luminescence "off-on" switching materials, toward the development of stimuli-responsive luminescent materials for anti-counterfeiting.

Regular arrays of C60-based molecular rotors mounted on the surface of tris(o-phenylenedioxy)cyclotriphosphazene nanocrystals

Dielectric spectroscopy has been used to determine the barriers of rotation of surface-mounted fullerenes (2.3 ± 0.1 and 4.3 ± 0.1 kcal mol-1). In order to achieve this, a C60 derivative equipped with an anchoring group designed to form a surface inclusion with the hexagonal form of tris(o-phenylenedioxy)cyclotriphosphazene (TPP) has been synthesized. Solid-state NMR analysis revealed that approximately 50% of the surface-mounted molecules have a chemical environment different from the others suggesting two distinct insertion modes. These observations correlate with results of DFT calculations.

Tuning the Solid State Luminescence of Benzofuran-Cyanostilbenes by Functionalization with Electron Donors or Acceptors

Three series of linear extended benzofuran derivatives associating cyanovinyl unit and electron withdrawing systems such as paracyanophenyl (series 1) and pentafluorophenyl (series 2) units or the electron donor 3,4-dimethoxyphenyl (series 3) moiety have been prepared. The donor character of the benzofuran part is adjusted either without modifying the conjugation by adding electron-donating methoxy groups to positions 5 and 6 of the benzofuran (compounds BF2 and BF3) or by increasing the extension of the conjugation with the naphthofuran unit (BF4), and by the insertion of a furan ring between the benzofuran and the cyanovinylene bond (BF5). While most of the compounds show very low emission in solution, microcrystalline powders of almost all compounds show middle at strong emissions under excitation at 350-400 nm with emission colors ranging from blue - green to red. It is shown that this variation of the emission colors is essentially due to the type of stacking of the molecules in the solids for series 1 and 2. For series 3, it is above all the extension of the conjugation of the compounds which leads to the red shift.

Innovative Real-Time Flow Sensor Using Detergent-Free Complex Emulsions with Dual-Emissive Semi-Perfluoroalkyl Substituted Α-Cyanostilbene

In this study, the potential of complex emulsions is investigated as transducers in sensing applications. Complex emulsions are stabilized without external detergents by developing a novel α-cyanostilbene substituted with PEG and semi-perfluoroalkyl chain (CNFCPEG). CNFCPEG exhibits unique variable emission properties depending on its aggregation state, allowing dual blue and green emissions in complex emulsions with hydrocarbon-in-fluorocarbon-in-water (H/F/W) morphology. The green excimer emissions result from the self-assembly of CNFCPEG at the fluorocarbon/water interface, while the blue emission observed is due to aggregation in the organic phase. A novel flow-injection method is developed by incorporating complex emulsions with CNFCPEG into multiple-well flow chips (MWFC). Iodine is successfully detected in a mobile aqueous solution by monitoring morphology changes. The findings demonstrate that self-stabilized complex emulsions with MWFC hold great promise for real-time sensing without costly instruments.

Metal-Free Hybrid Energetic Composites Based on Donor-Acceptor π-Conjugated Organic Energetic Catalysts with Enlightening the Laser Ignition Performance of Multi-Scale Ammonium Perchlorate

Photosensitive materials, such as energetic complexes, usually have high sensitivity and cause heavy-metal pollution, whereas others, like carbon black and dye, do not contain energy, which affects energy output and mechanical properties. In this work, donor-acceptor π-conjugated energetic catalysts, denoted as D-n, are designed and synthesized. Nonmetallic hybrid energetic composites are prepared by assembling the as-synthesized catalysts into multiscale ammonium perchlorate (AP). Composites containing catalysts and APs can be successfully ignited without the involvement of metals. The new ignition mechanism is further analyzed using experimental and theoretical analyses such as UV-vis-near-infrared (NIR) spectra, electron-spin resonance spectroscopy, and energy-gap analysis. The shortest ignition delay time is 56 ms under the experimental condition of a NIR wavelength of 1064 nm and a laser power of 10 W. At the voltage of 1 kV and the electric field of 500 V mm-1 , the laser-ignition delay time of D-2/AP hybrid composite decreases from 56 to 35 ms because D-2 also exhibits organic semiconductor-like properties. D-2/AP and D-12/AP can also be used to successfully laser ignite other common energetic materials. This study can guide the development of advanced metal-free laser-ignitable energetic composites to address challenges in the field of aerospace engineering.

Topological transformation across different dimensions of supramolecular polymer via photo-isomerization

Herein, we report a novel topological transformable supramolecular polymer capable of converting its architecture from a two-dimensional to a one-dimensional structure. The transformative process is achieved by the precise control of the steric configuration of constituent monomers via photo-isomerization.

Pathway Control of π-Conjugated Supramolecular Polymers by Incorporating Donor-Acceptor Functionality

Controlling the nanoscale orientation of π-conjugated systems remains challenging due to the complexity of multiple energy landscapes involved in the supramolecular assembly process. In this study, we have developed an effective strategy for programming the pathways of π-conjugated supramolecular polymers, by incorporating both electron-rich methoxy- or methanthiol-benzene as donor unit and electron-poor cyano-vinylenes as acceptor units on the monomeric structure. It leads to the formation of parallel-stacked supramolecular polymers as the metastable species through homomeric donor/acceptor packing, which convert to slip-stacked supramolecular polymers as the thermodynamically stable species facilitated by heteromeric donor-acceptor packing. By further investigating the external seed-induced kinetic-to-thermodynamic transformation behaviors, our findings suggest that the donor-acceptor functionality on the seed structure is crucial for accelerating pathway conversion. This is achieved by eliminating the initial lag phase in the supramolecular polymerization process. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into designing molecular structures that control aggregation pathways of π-conjugated nanostructures.

Solvent-resolved self-assemblies of cholesteryl-cyanostilbene conjugates with photo- and thermo-responsiveness

It remains challenging to construct multifunctional chiral stimulus-responsive molecules and to modulate their morphology at the nanoscale. In this paper, we synthesized a novel chiral molecule with both photoactive and potentially bioactive properties and found that the morphological changes of its self-assembly were influenced by solvent polarity and light exposure. This work enabled the synthesized molecule to undergo Z-E isomerization efficiently under light irradiation by introducing highly oriented hydrogen bonds into the cyanostilbene part. The photoisomerization of the cyanostilbene part from Z- to E-type was further exploited, leading to morphological changes from nanohelices to vesicles with chiroptical evolution. The light-modulated supramolecular chirality and nanostructure provide a green and efficient method for the design of responsive chiral materials.

Contrasting luminescence in heparin and DNA-templated co-assemblies of dimeric cyanostilbenes: efficient energy transfer in heparin-based co-assemblies

Dimeric cationic cyanostilbenes with peripheral alkyl chains demonstrated aggregation in aqueous media depending on the length of the hydrophobic segment and produced luminescent spherical nano-assemblies in the case of long alkyl chain derivatives. In the presence of heparin, a bio-polyanion that is routinely used as an anticoagulant, the self-assembled structures obtained from the amphiphilic dimers showed the formation of higher-order structures whereas the non-assembling dimers exhibited heparin-induced supramolecular structure formation. In both cases, a significant enhancement in the emission was observed. This led to the detection of heparin in aqueous buffer, serum and plasma with a "turn-on" fluorescence response. Interestingly, these derivatives also exhibited luminescence variation in the presence of ctDNA. However, the response towards DNA was opposite to that observed in the case of heparin i.e., "turn-off'' fluorescence response. Notably, depending on the length of the alkyl segment, divergent DNA binding modes of these derivatives were observed. Due to their enhanced luminescence, the heparin-based co-assemblies were further explored as artificial light-harvesting systems exhibiting an efficient energy transfer process to embedded acceptor dyes with a high antenna effect.

Tuning Photophysical Properties via Positional Isomerization of the Pyridine Ring in Donor-Acceptor-Structured Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogens Based on Phenylmethylene Pyridineacetonitrile Derivatives

A series of aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-featured phenylmethylene pyridineacetonitrile derivatives named o-DBCNPy ((Z)-3-(4-(di-p-tolylamino)phenyl)-2-(pyridin-2-yl)acrylonitrile), m-DBCNPy ((Z)-3-(4-(di-p-tolylamino)phenyl)-2-(pyridin-3-yl)acrylonitrile), and p-DBCNPy ((Z)-3-(4-(di-p-tolylamino)phenyl)-2-(pyridin-4-yl)acrylonitrile) have been synthesized by tuning the substitution position of the pyridine ring. The linkage manner of the pyridine ring had influences on the molecular configuration and conjugation, thus leading to different photophysical properties. The absorption and fluorescence emission peak showed a bathochromic shift when the linking position of the pyridine ring changed from the meta to the ortho and para position. Meanwhile, o-DBCNPy exhibited the highest fluorescence quantum yield of 0.81 and the longest fluorescence lifetime of 7.96 ns as a neat film among all three isomers. Moreover, non-doped organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were assembled in which the molecules acted as the light-emitting layer. Due to the relatively prominent emission properties, the electroluminescence (EL) performance of the o-DBCNPy-based OLED was superior to those of the devices based on the other two isomers with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 4.31%. The results indicate that delicate molecular modulation of AIE molecules could endow them with improved photophysical properties, making them potential candidates for organic photoelectronic devices.

Self-assembled discotics as molecular semiconductors

With the advent of a new era of smart-technology, the demand for more economic optoelectronic materials that do not compromise with efficiency is gradually on the rise. Organic semiconductors provide greener alternatives to the conventional inorganic ones, but encounter the challenge of balancing charge carrier mobility with processability in devices. Discotic liquid crystals (DLCs), a class of self-assembling soft organic materials, possess the perfect degree of order and dynamics to address this challenge. Providing unidimensional charge carrier pathways through their nanoscale columnar architecture, DLCs can behave as efficient charge transport systems across a wide range of optoelectronic devices. Moreover, DLCs are solution-processable, thus reducing the fabrication cost. In this article, we have discussed the approaches towards developing DLCs as semiconductors, focusing on their molecular design concepts, supramolecular structures and electronic properties in the context of their charge carrier mobilities.

Thermo-Induced Bathochromic Emission in Columnar Discotic Liquid Crystals Realized by Intramolecular Planarization

Most organic thermochromic fluorescent materials exhibit thermo-induced hypsochromic emission due to the formation of excimers in ordered molecular solids; however, it is still a challenge to endow them with bathochromic emission despite its significance in making up the field of thermochromism. Here, a thermo-induced bathochromic emission in columnar discotic liquid crystals is reported realized by intramolecular planarization of the mesogenic fluorophores. A three-armed discotic molecule of dialkylamino-tricyanotristyrylbenzene was synthesized, which preferred to twist out of the core plane to accommodate ordered molecular stacking in hexagonal columnar mesophases, giving rise to bright green monomer emission. However, intramolecular planarization of the mesogenic fluorophores occurred in isotropic liquid increasing the conjugation length, and as a result led to thermo-induced bathochromic emission from green to yellow light. This work reports a new concept in the thermochromic field and provides a novel strategy to achieve fluorescence tuning from intramolecular actions.

Facile Synthesis of Tetraphenylethene (TPE)-Based Fluorophores Derived by π-Extended Systems: Opposite Mechanofluorochromism, Anti-Counterfeiting and Bioimaging

Although remarkable progresses are achieved in the design and development of the mono-shift in photoluminescence for mechanofluorochromic materials, it is still a severe challenge to explore the opposite mechanofluorochromic materials with both blue- and red-shifted photoluminescence. Herein, two unprecedented 4,5-bis(TPE)-1H-imidazole fused pyridine or quinoline-based fluorophores X-1 and X-2 were designed and synthesized, and X-1 and X-2, exhibit completely opposite mechanofluorochromic behavior. Under UV lamp, the color of pristine X-1 changed from blue to green with reversible redshifted 27 nm in fluorescence emission spectra after ground, while the color of pristine X-2 changed from red to yellow with reversible blue-shifted 74 nm after ground. The detailed characterizations (including PXRD, SEM and DSC) confirmed that this opposite mechanofluorochromism was attributed to the transformation of order-crystalline and amorphous states. The crystal structure analysis and theoretical calculation further explain that opposite mechanofluorochromic behavior take into account different π-π stacking mode by induced π-extended systems. In addition, these TPE-based fluorophores (X-1 and X-2) exhibited excellent bio-compatibility and fluorescence properties for bio-imaging, writable data storage and anti-counterfeiting materials.

Solvent-Controlled Photoswitching of Azobenzene: An Excited State Shuttle

The light-controlled excited state trans-cis isomerization process is a key to the development of conversion of light energy to mechanical motion at the molecular level. Considerable efforts have been made in tuning the isomerization process with electron donor and acceptor substituents by altering the excited state reaction coordinate. Here, we report a two novel push-pull series of para-diethylamino (DEA) and diphenylamino (DPA) substituted (E)-4'-((4-(diethylamino)phenyl)diazenyl)-N,N-diphenyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-amine (1) and (E)-4'-((4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)diazenyl)-N,N-diphenyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-amine (2). Compounds 1 and 2 undergo both photochemical and photophysical excited state deactivation pathways which can be controlled by varying the solvent polarity. These structural motifs of 1 and 2 would undergo torsional motions upon excitation to exhibit either trans→cis photoisomerization or to form a twisted intramolecular charge transfer state and both the process originates from the same excited state and competes with each other. Thus, alternations in the surrounding environment such as solvent polarity, solution viscosity, and protonation were employed to understand the preferential excited state deactivation pathway and thereby these systems could be employed as a new class of azobenzene-based luminescent photochromic molecules. For instance, in nonpolar solvent, toluene photoisomerization is preferred over TICT, but polar solvent, ethanol preferentially stabilizes the TICT state by virtue of N-C rotation which renders the energy barrier unfavourable for photoisomerization. The photostationary state of 1 in toluene is predominantly the Z isomer, whereas in ethanol E isomer is nearly two-fold higher than the Z isomer. These feature sets up a new approach towards the construction of multinary molecular switches and subsequent development in diverse fields.

Light-triggered Modulation of Supramolecular Chirality

Dynamically controlling the supramolecular chirality is of great significance in development of functional chiral materials, which is thus essential for the specific function implementation. As an external energy input, light is remote and accurate for modulating chiral assemblies. In non-polarized light control, some photochemically reactive units (e. g., azobenzene, ɑ-cyanostilbene, spiropyran, anthracene) or photo-induced directionally rotating molecular motors were designed to drive chiral transfer or amplification. Besides, photoexcitation induced assembly based physical approach was also explored recently to regulate supramolecular chirality beyond photochemical reactions. In addition, circularly polarized light was applied to induce asymmetric arrangement of organic molecules and asymmetric photochemical synthesis of inorganic metallic nanostructures, in which both wavelength and handedness of circularly polarized light have effects on the induced supramolecular chirality. Although light-triggered chiral assemblies have been widely applied in photoelectric materials, biomedical fields, soft actuator, chiral catalysis and chiral sensing, there is a lack of systematic review on this topic. In this review, we summarized the recent studies and perspectives in the constructions and applications of light-responsive chiral assembled systems, aiming to provide better knowledge for the development of multifunctional chiral nanomaterials.

Morphology-Dependent Optoelectronic Properties of Pentacene Nanoribbon and Nanosheet Crystallite

Organic, single crystals have emerged as unique optoelectrical materials due to their highly ordered structure and low defects. In this work, pentacene nanoribbons and nanosheets were selectively fabricated by controlling their growth temperature. The results show that their photoluminescence (PL) activity and electrical properties were strongly dependent on their geometrical morphology and molecular stacking mode such as the degree of π-orbital overlap and intermolecular interaction. The pentacene nanoribbon crystal exhibited a higher PL intensity compared with the nanosheet configuration; conversely, its electrical conductivity was poor. The low-temperature PL measurement indicated that there are stronger π-π stacking interactions in the nanosheet crystal than in the nanoribbon crystal, leading to exciton quenching and higher conductivity. Our study demonstrated that a unique optoelectronic property of organic crystals can be obtained by controlling the crystal's morphology, which offers potential guidance for the future design and development of organic crystal optoelectronics.

Controllable self-assembly of thiophene-based π-conjugated molecule and further construction of pillar[5]arene-based host-guest white-light emission system

Photoluminescence materials have been widely applied in biological imaging and sensing, anti-counterfeiting, light-emitting diodes, logic gates et al. The fabrication of luminescent materials with adjustable emission color by self-assembly of π-conjugated molecules has attracted particular attention. In this study, we designed and synthesized a thiophene-based α-cyanostyrene-derivative (TPPA), then investigate its self-assembly morphology and fluorescence emission under different organic solvents, different proportions of H2O/THF (DMSO) mixture and different pH conditions by UV, FL and SEM images. It was found that TPPA formed nanoparticles by self-assembly in organic solvent (THF or DMSO), accompanied by strong fluorescence emission. However, with the increase of water ratio, the fluorescence intensity decreased accompany with red shift, and the self-assembly morphology changed from nanoparticles to fibers. More interestingly, when pillar[5]arene (P5) was added to form host-guest complex with TPPA, white light emission could be successfully constructed when the ratio of TPPA to P5 was 1:20 and THF to water was 19:1.

Multicolor-Luminescence Including White Light by Photomodulation of Supramolecular Assemblies in Aqueous Media

Photo-responsive supramolecular systems offer intriguing functional aspects which have led to their applications in diverse fields such as optoelectronics and biomedicine. However, the modulation of the luminescence output in a spatiotemporal fashion by photo-controlled transformation still remains a challenging task. Herein, we report the controlled regulation of the emission color of supramolecular assemblies of amphiphilic cyanostilbenes (CSs) in water through in situ photomodulation employing UV and sunlight. Due to their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features, the CS chromophores in the supramolecular assemblies exhibited bright greenish-yellow emission. Photoirradiation predominantly led to the formation of a cyclized product exhibiting aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) features and having efficient cyan-blue emission in water but severely quenched emission in the solid state. Hence, starting from a unicomponent scaffold, photomodulation provided tunable emission ranging from greenish-yellow to cyan-blue including white light in water. Furthermore, using the contrasting AIE and ACQ behavior of the components in the photoirradiated mixtures, we were able to design rewritable fluorescent inks and encryption in solid films indicating the practical utility of these systems.

Morphology-dependent photoresponsive behaviors of a self-assembled system based on a single cyanostilbene derivative

In recent years, photoresponsive supramolecular self-assemblies have shown great potential in various fields. However, it is still a great challenge to integrate and control multiple photoresponsive behaviors in a self-assembled system. Herein, we design a novel cyanostilbene-based molecule VOE. In the aggregated state, it has different photoresponsive behaviors under different morphologies. When VOE molecules are dispersed in a 70% H₂O/THF mixture, two different assembly morphologies are obtained as the aging time changes. One is weakly emissive nanoparticles with amorphous packing arrangements, and the other is highly emissive microbelts with well-ordered stacking modes. When they are irradiated with blue light (420 nm), the disordered assembly structure of nanoparticles leads to a [2+2] cycloaddition reaction, while a Z/E isomerization reaction occurs in ordered packed microbelts. Therefore, we can use a self-assembled system to generate two different morphologies, enabling completely different emissions and photoresponsive behaviors.

Supramolecular self-assembly mediated aggregation-induced emission of fluorene-derived cyanostilbenes: multifunctional probes for live cell-imaging

The first discovery of aggregation-induced emission (AIE), whereby luminogen aggregation plays a positive role in enhancing the light-emission efficiency, has piqued the interest of many researchers as it opens up a new avenue for the exploration of practically beneficial luminescent materials. Diverse AIE-active luminogens (or AIEgens) with tunable emission colours and very high quantum yields (up to unity) in the solid state have been extensively utilised in a broad range of fields including optoelectronics, energy and bioscience. In this article, we describe novel fluorene-based fluorogens that exhibit bright emission in the solid-state, mechanical stimuli-responsive optical properties and aggregation-induced emissive ability, and were able to modulate their donor and acceptor properties. The target compounds were synthesized by a Knoevenagel condensation followed by Suzuki cross-coupling reaction, which tends to result in good yields. The target cyanostilbenes (4a-4d) show different reversibly switched states with high contrast through morphology modulation and demonstrate solvatochromic, vapochromic, and AIE properties. These results strongly suggest that compound 4d has better properties than the other derivatives (4a-c) due to the presence of extended donor-acceptor ability. Moreover, density-functional theory (DFT) calculations strongly support the UV-Vis and fluorescence spectral studies. The formation of nano-flakes and cuboid-shaped nanocrystals was further confirmed by FE-SEM and AFM studies. The synthesized compound 4d displayed very bright emission in the solid state and in the aggregate state as compared with the other derivatives (4a-4c). These results might be due to the presence of high-color contrast, which is an advantage for elucidation and overcomes the challenges exhibited in live-cell imaging applications. Moreover, an MTT assay on live A549 cells incubated with the target compound (4d) showed very low cytotoxicity even at high concentrations.

A near-infrared plasma membrane-specific AIE probe for fluorescence lifetime imaging of phagocytosis

Phagocytosis is a biological process that plays a key role in host defense and tissue homeostasis. Efficient approaches for realtime imaging of phagocytosis are highly desired but limited. Herein, an AIE-active near-infrared fluorescent probe, named TBTCP, was developed for fluorescence lifetime imaging of phagocytosis. TBTCP could selectively label the cell plasma membrane with fast staining, wash-free process, high signal-to-background ratio, and excellent photostability. Cellular membrane statuses under different osmolarities as well as macrophage phagocytosis of bacteria or large silica particles in early stages could be reported by the fluorescence lifetime changes of TBTCP. Compared with current fluorescence imaging methods, which target the bioenvironmental changes in the late phagocytosis stage, this approach detects the changes in the cell membrane, thus giving a faster response to phagocytosis. This article provides a functional tool to report the phagocytic dynamics of macrophages which may greatly contribute to the studies of phagocytic function-related diseases.

Mechanical stimuli-induced multiple photophysical responsive AIEgens with high contrast properties

Perylene Bisimide-Based Luminescent Liquid Crystals with Tunable Solid-State Light Emission

Perylene bisimides are among the most studied building blocks for supramolecular assemblies in the fabrication of optoelectronic devices for their exceptional optical and electronic properties; however, developing perylene bisimide-based luminescent liquid crystals remains a challenge for the strong π-stacking tendency of the large planar aromatic core to quench the emission. We here reported a novel strategy to achieve luminescent liquid crystals based on perylene bisimides by introducing a conformation-adjustable core to control the molecular stacking arrangement of planar perylene bisimides in the solid state. The emission wavelength is in the deep-red region with a luminescence efficiency of up to 10%. Fluorescence properties of the liquid crystals can be further regulated by photoisomerization-induced structural evolution from columnar to lamellar mesophases. These luminescent liquid crystals are also able to not only exhibit strong emission at high temperatures but also show attractive thermochromic luminescence tuning behaviors. This work provides a new strategy for the design and development of novel solid-state luminescent materials with potential for various optoelectronic applications.

A Tri-state Fluorescent Switch with "Gated" Solid-state Photochromism Induced by an External Force

In this article, we report a newly designed molecule composed of a dihydroazulene (DHA) group and a phenothiazine (PTZ) moiety, which achieves aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE), mechanochromism and "gated" solid-state photochromism upon stimulation by an external force. Grinding loosens intermolecular interactions in the crystal and causes a red-shift of fluorescence from 570 nm to 600 nm. Meanwhile, the ring-opening reaction of DHA unit is activated by grinding and a remarkable photochromism could be observed from the grinded powder. The reddish emission of the grinded powder peaked at 600 nm weakened gradually and finally became dark, and a new absorption band at 470 nm emerged in the absorption spectra. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculation results reveal that the intramolecular intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) process is replaced by a locally excited (LE) emission on the DHA group, which leads to the quenching of fluorescence. Its impressive photochromic property inspired us to a simple but effective way to develop an encryption system which can let the correct information be displayed upon external stimulation.

Multiresponsive Tetra-Arylethene-Based Fluorescent Switch with Multicolored Changes: Single-Crystal Photochromism, Mechanochromism, and Acidichromism

In this article, we report a simple tetra-arylethene-based fluorescent switch TPS═C4 modified with a flexible alkyl chain by the Schiff base structure. The incorporation of C═N retains the excellent photochromic property of tetra-arylethene and endows TPS═C4 with new multiresponsiveness of mechanochromism and acidichromism and multicolor changes. TPS═C4 shows remarkable mechanochromism from a deep blue emission at 420 nm to bright blue with a new shoulder band at 450 nm, which arises from the force-induced phase transition from the crystal state to an amorphous form. Both the original crystalline powder and the ground amorphous sample exhibit interesting acidichromism, and their emission colors turn yellow (530 nm), due to the protonation of C═N. More interestingly, TPS═C4 displays fascinating photochromism in multiple states, especially in the single-crystal state. The flexible alkyl chain offers enough free space for molecular motion and facilitates single-crystal photochromism. Due to the multiresponsiveness and multicolor switch, TPS═C4 can be satisfactorily used for the multidimensional anticounterfeiting application. To the best of our knowledge, TPS═C4 is a rare multifunctional molecule with a simple structure but featuring multiresponsiveness and multicolor switch.

Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Gels: Fabrications, Functions, and Applications

Chromophores that exhibit aggregation-induced emission (i.e., aggregation-induced emission luminogens [AIEgens]) emit intense fluorescence in their aggregated states, but show negligible emission as discrete molecular species in solution due to the changes in restriction and freedom of intramolecular motions. As solvent-swollen quasi-solids with both a compact phase and a free space, gels enable manipulation of intramolecular motions. Thus, AIE-active gels have attracted significant interest owing to their various distinctive properties and promising application potential. Herein, a comprehensive overview of AIE-active gels is provided. The fabrication strategies employed are detailed, and the applications of AIEgens are summarized. In addition, the gel functions arising from the AIE moieties are revealed, along with their structure-property relationships. Furthermore, the applications of AIE-active gels in diverse areas are illustrated. Finally, ongoing challenges and potential means to address them are discussed, along with future perspectives on AIE-active gels, with the overall aim of inspiring research on novel materials and ideas.
