A General Approach for Fluid Patterning and Application in Fabricating Microdevices

Visualization of the Dynamics of Photoinduced Crawling Motion of 4-(Methylamino)Azobenzene Crystals via Diffracted X-ray Tracking

The photoinduced crawling motion of crystals is a continuous motion that azobenzene molecular crystals exhibit under light irradiation. Such motion enables object manipulation at the microscale with a simple setup of fixed LED light sources. Transportation of nano-/micromaterials using photoinduced crawling motion has recently been reported. However, the details of the motion mechanism have not been revealed so far. Herein, we report visualization of the dynamics of fine particles in 4-(methylamino)azobenzene (4-MAAB) crystals under light irradiation via diffracted X-ray tracking (DXT). Continuously repeated melting and recrystallization of 4-MAAB crystals under light irradiation results in the flow of liquid 4-MAAB. Zinc oxide (ZnO) particles were introduced inside the 4-MAAB crystals to detect diffracted X-rays. The ZnO particles rotate with the flow of liquid 4-MAAB. By using white X-rays with a wide energy width, the rotation of each zinc oxide nanoparticle was detected as the movement of a bright spot in the X-ray diffraction pattern. It was clearly shown that the ZnO particles rotated increasingly as the irradiation light intensity increased. Furthermore, we also found anisotropy in the rotational direction of ZnO particles that occurred during the crawling motion of 4-MAAB crystals. It has become clear that the flow perpendicular to the supporting film of 4-MAAB crystals is enhanced inside the crystal during the crawling motion. DXT provides a unique means to elucidate the mechanism of photoinduced crawling motion of crystals.

Soft robotic patterning of liquids

Patterning of two or more liquids, either homogeneous in each phase or mixed with particles (including biological matter, such as cells and proteins), by controlling their flow dynamics, is relevant to several applications. Examples include dynamic spatial confinement of liquids in microfluidic systems (such as lab-on-a-chip and organ-on-a-chip devices) or structuring of polymers to modulate various properties (such as strength, conductivity, transparency and surface finishing). State-of-the-art strategies use various technologies, including positioners, shakers and acoustic actuators, which often combine limited versatility of mixing with significant inefficiency, energy consumption, and noise, as well as tendency to increase the temperature of the liquids. Here, we describe a new kind of robotic mixers of liquids, based on electro-responsive smart materials (dielectric elastomer actuators). We show for the first time how an efficient soft robotic device can be used to produce, via combinations of rotations and translations, various spatial patterns in liquids and maintain them stable for a few minutes. Moreover, we show that, as compared to a conventional orbital shaker, the new type of robotic device can mix liquids with a higher efficacy (~ 94% relative to ~ 80%, after 8 min of mixing) and with a significantly lower increase of the liquids' temperature (+ 1 °C relative to + 5 °C, after 6 h of mixing). This is especially beneficial when mixing should occur according to controllable spatial features and should involve temperature-sensitive matter (such as biological cells, proteins, pre-polymers and other thermolabile molecules).

Challenges and Opportunities of Chemiresistors Based on Microelectromechanical Systems for Chemical Olfaction

Microelectromechanical-system (MEMS)-based semiconductor gas sensors are considered one of the fastest-growing, interdisciplinary high technologies during the post-Moore era. Modern advancements within this arena include wearable electronics, Internet of Things, and artificial brain-inspired intelligence, among other modalities, thus bringing opportunities to drive MEMS-based gas sensors with higher performance, lower costs, and wider applicability. However, the high demand for miniature and micropower sensors with unified processes on a single chip imposes great challenges. This review focuses on recent developments and pitfalls in MEMS-based micro- and nanoscale gas sensors and details future trends. We also cover the background of the topic, seminal efforts, current applications and challenges, and opportunities for next-generation systems.

Multi-Bioinspired Janus Copper Mesh for Improved Gravity-Irrelevant Directional Water Droplet and Flow Transport

A conceptually novel multi-bioinspired strategy based on structures and functions derived from the Namib desert beetle and lotus leaf is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme synergistically combines the features of alternating wettability patterns and asymmetric wettability for improved directional water transport. Consequently, a Janus copper mesh, which substantially outperforms other single-bioinspired synthetic materials, is produced. The Janus copper mesh achieves directional self-transportation of tiny water droplets and continuous water flow in a gravity-irrelevant or an anti-gravity manner without energy consumption. This depends on the asymmetric wettability and alternating hydrophobic-hydrophilic wettability patterns on the hydrophobic surface of the mesh. In particular, Janus copper shows remarkable selective directional water transport in a water-oil system, rendering it a promising candidate for practical applications.

Tunable Fluid-Type Metasurface for Wide-Angle and Multifrequency Water-Air Acoustic Transmission

Efficient acoustic communication across the water-air interface remains a great challenge owing to the extreme acoustic impedance mismatch. Few present acoustic metamaterials can be constructed on the free air-water interface for enhancing the acoustic transmission because of the interface instability. Previous strategies overcoming this difficulty were limited in practical usage, as well as the wide-angle and multifrequency acoustic transmission. Here, we report a simple and practical way to obtain the wide-angle and multifrequency water-air acoustic transmission with a tunable fluid-type acoustic metasurface (FAM). The FAM has a transmission enhancement of acoustic energy over 200 times, with a thickness less than the wavelength in water by three orders of magnitude. The FAM can work at an almost arbitrary water-to-air incident angle, and the operating frequencies can be flexibly adjusted. Multifrequency transmissions can be obtained with multilayer FAMs. In experiments, the FAM is demonstrated to be stable enough for practical applications and has the transmission enhancement of over 20 dB for wide frequencies. The transmission enhancement of music signal across the water-air interface was performed to demonstrate the applications in acoustic communications. The FAM will benefit various applications in hydroacoustics and oceanography.

Printable Smart Materials and Devices: Strategies and Applications

Smart materials are a kind of functional materials which can sense and response to environmental conditions or stimuli from optical, electrical, magnetic mechanical, thermal, and chemical signals, etc. Patterning of smart materials is the key to achieving large-scale arrays of functional devices. Over the last decades, printing methods including inkjet printing, template-assisted printing, and 3D printing are extensively investigated and utilized in fabricating intelligent micro/nano devices, as printing strategies allow for constructing multidimensional and multimaterial architectures. Great strides in printable smart materials are opening new possibilities for functional devices to better serve human beings, such as wearable sensors, integrated optoelectronics, artificial neurons, and so on. However, there are still many challenges and drawbacks that need to be overcome in order to achieve the controllable modulation between smart materials and device performance. In this review, we give an overview on printable smart materials, printing strategies, and applications of printed functional devices. In addition, the advantages in actual practices of printing smart materials-based devices are discussed, and the current limitations and future opportunities are proposed. This review aims to summarize the recent progress and provide reference for novel smart materials and printing strategies as well as applications of intelligent devices.

Magnetic-actuated "capillary container" for versatile three-dimensional fluid interface manipulation

Fluid interfaces are omnipresent in nature. Engineering the fluid interface is essential to study interfacial processes for basic research and industrial applications. However, it remains challenging to precisely control the fluid interface because of its fluidity and instability. Here, we proposed a magnetic-actuated "capillary container" to realize three-dimensional (3D) fluid interface creation and programmable dynamic manipulation. By wettability modification, 3D fluid interfaces with predesigned sizes and geometries can be constructed in air, water, and oils. Multiple motion modes were realized by adjusting the container's structure and magnetic field. Besides, we demonstrated its feasibility in various fluids by performing selective fluid collection and chemical reaction manipulations. The container can also be encapsulated with an interfacial gelation reaction. Using this process, diverse free-standing 3D membranes were produced, and the dynamic release of riboflavin (vitamin B₂) was studied. This versatile capillary container will provide a promising platform for open microfluidics, interfacial chemistry, and biomedical engineering.

Artificial Leaf for Switchable Droplet Manipulation

Droplet manipulation plays an important role in scientific research, daily life, and practical production such as biological and chemical analysis. Inspired by the structure and function of three typical leaf veins, the bionic texture was replicated by the template method, and the artificial leaf was selectively treated by nanoparticles to obtain a quasi-three-dimensional hybrid superhydrophobic-hydrophilic surface. When the droplet touches the surface of the leaf, it will be attracted to the bottom of the main vein from different directions even in horizontal conditions due to the Laplace pressure gradient and energy gradient. The simulation analysis demonstrates that the reason for directional transportation is the energy gradient of the droplets on the different levels of veins, including the thin veins, lateral veins, and main vein. Meanwhile, the experimental result of water collection also showed an outstanding directional transportation effect and excellent water collection efficiency. In addition, when the sample is tilted upside down, the droplet will flow back to the main vein along the lateral vein and then flow down the main vein, showing a good droplet pumping effect. Therefore, the directional and polydirectional transportation of droplets on the same sample is successfully realized, and the conversion between executing single and multiple tasks simultaneously can be realized only by upright and inverted samples. This work provided a new strategy for directional and polydirectional water manipulation, water collection, directional drainage, and microfluidic devices.

A Wetting-Enabled-Transfer (WET) Strategy for Precise Surface Patterning of Organohydrogels

The ability to manipulate water and oil phases in a designable manner is of great significance in widespread fields from art paintings to materials science. However, achieving precise and stable surface patterns for two immiscible phases of water and oil remains a challenge. Herein, a general wetting-enabled-transfer (WET) strategy is reported to construct discretionary shape-defined surface patterns of organohydrogels along with their monolithic formation either from flat to curved surfaces or from the microscale to the macroscale. Locally differentiated wettability induces hydrophilic monomers and hydrophobic monomers from an emulsion system onto the wettability-matching regions of the prepatterned substrates, subsequently forming corresponding hydrogel and organogel patterns on the organohydrogel surface after in situ photopolymerization. The precision of the surface patterns can be controlled by optimizing the gel monomers, emulsion droplet size, and surface chemical composition of the prepatterned substrates. This finding may provide a feasible strategy for precisely patterning functional materials from two-immiscible-phase systems.

A fluid-guided printing strategy for patterning high refractive index photonic microarrays

High refractive index (HRI, n > 1.8) photonic structures offer strong light confinement and refractive efficiencies, cover the entire visible spectrum and can be tuned by designing geometric arrayed features. However, its practical applications are still hindered by the applicability and material limitation of lithography-based micro/nano fabrication approaches. Herein, we demonstrate a fluid-guided printing process for preparing HRI selenium microarrays. The microstructured flexible template is replicated from the diced silicon wafer without any lithography-based methods. When heated above the glass transition temperature, the flow characteristics of selenium endows the structure downsizing and orientation patterning between the target substrate and the template. Near 10 times narrowing selenium microarrays (1.9 μm width) are patterned from the non-lithography template (18 μm width). HRI selenium microarrays offer high refractive efficiencies and strong optical confinement abilities, which achieve angle-dependent structurally coloration and polarization. Meanwhile, the color difference can be recognized under the one degree distinction of the angle between incident and refracted light. This printing platform will facilitate HRI optical metasurfaces in a variety of applications, ranging from photonic sensor, polarization modulation to light manipulation.

Liquid metal-integrated ultra-elastic conductive microfibers from microfluidics for wearable electronics

Liquid metal (LM) has shown potential values in different areas. Attempts to implement LM are tending to develop new functions and make it versatile to improve its performance for practical applications. Here, we present an unprecedented LM-integrated ultra-elastic microfiber with distinctive features for wearable electronics. The microfiber with a polyurethane shell and an LM core was continuously generated by using a sequenced microfluidic spinning and injection method. Due to the precise fluid manipulation of microfluidics, the resultant microfiber could be tailored with tunable morphologies and responsive conductivities. We have demonstrated that the microfiber could act as dynamic force sensor and motion indicator when it was embedded into elastic films. In addition, the values of the LM-integrated ultra-elastic microfiber on energy conversions such as electro-magnetic or electro-thermal conversions have also been realized. These features indicate that LM-integrated microfiber will open up new frontiers in LM-integrated materials and the wearable electronics field.

Inner Surface Design of Functional Microchannels for Microscale Flow Control

Fluidic flow behaviors in microfluidics are dominated by the interfaces created between the fluids and the inner surface walls of microchannels. Microchannel inner surface designs, including the surface chemical modification, and the construction of micro-/nanostructures, are good examples of manipulating those interfaces between liquids and surfaces through tuning the chemical and physical properties of the inner walls of the microchannel. Therefore, the microchannel inner surface design plays critical roles in regulating microflows to enhance the capabilities of microfluidic systems for various applications. Most recently, the rapid progresses in micro-/nanofabrication technologies and fundamental materials have also made it possible to integrate increasingly complex chemical and physical surface modification strategies with the preparation of microchannels in microfluidics. Besides, a wave of researches focusing on the ideas of using liquids as dynamic surface materials is identified, and the unique characteristics endowed with liquid-liquid interfaces have revealed that the interesting phenomena can extend the scope of interfacial interactions determining microflow behaviors. This review extensively discusses the microchannel inner surface designs for microflow control, especially evaluates them from the perspectives of the interfaces resulting from the inner surface designs. In addition, prospective opportunities for the development of surface designs of microchannels, and their applications are provided with the potential to attract scientific interest in areas related to the rapid development and applications of various microchannel systems.

Multibioinspired slippery surfaces with wettable bump arrays for droplets pumping

Droplet manipulation is playing an important role in various fields, including scientific research, industrial production, and daily life. Here, inspired by the microstructures and functions of Namib desert beetles, Nepenthes pitcher plants, and emergent aquatic plants, we present a multibioinspired slippery surface for droplet manipulation by employing combined strategies of bottom-up colloidal self-assembly, top-down photolithography, and microstructured mold replication. The resultant multilayered hierarchical wettability surface consists of hollow hydrogel bump arrays and a lubricant-infused inverse opal film as the substrate. Based on capillary force, together with slippery properties of the substrate and wettability of the bump arrays, water droplets from all directions can be attracted to the bumps and be collected through hollow channels to a reservoir. Independent of extra energy input, droplet condensation, or coalescence, these surfaces have shown ideal droplet pumping and water collection efficiency. In particular, these slippery surfaces also exhibit remarkable features including versatility, generalization, and recyclability in practical use such as small droplet collection, which make them promising candidates for a wide range of applications.

Encoded Microneedle Arrays for Detection of Skin Interstitial Fluid Biomarkers

Skin interstitial fluid (ISF) is considered as an emerging source of biomarkers with physiological and medical significance. Microneedle arrays (MNs) provide a promising means for painless, noninvasive detection of these biomarkers. Here, novel MNs integrated with photonic crystal (PhC) barcodes are presented, and multiplex specific detection of ISF biomarkers is realized for the first time. The PhC barcodes-loaded flexible MNs are simply fabricated by replicating dynamic ferrofluid-cast micromoldings. When the prepared MNs are inserted into skin, they can enrich specific biomarkers to their probes-decorated PhC barcodes. Thus, by adding corresponding fluorescent probes to form sandwich immunocomplexes, the relative content of the biomarkers can be read out through the fluorescence intensity of the barcodes; meanwhile, the species of these biomarkers can be clearly distinguished by the reflection peaks of the PhC barcodes. Based on the encoded MNs, their sensitivity, flexibility, and versatility of capturing and detecting three inflammatory cytokines are demonstrated in a sepsis mice model. Compared with existing MNs for ISF detection, the encoded MNs not only possess equivalent detection effects with less post-processing and simplified procedures, but can also detect multiple biomarkers simultaneously, which makes them ideal in many clinical and biomedical detection areas.

Multimaterial 3D Printing for Arbitrary Distribution with Nanoscale Resolution

At the core of additive manufacturing (3D printing) is the ability to rapidly print with multiple materials for arbitrary distribution with high resolution, which can remove challenges and limits of traditional assembly and enable us to make increasingly complex objects, especially exciting meta-materials. Here we demonstrate a simple and effective strategy to achieve nano-resolution printing of multiple materials for arbitrary distribution via layer-by-layer deposition on a special deposition surface. The established physical model reveals that complex distribution on a section can be achieved by vertical deformation of simple lamination of multiple materials. The deformation is controlled by a special surface of the mold and a contour-by-contour (instead of point-by-point) printing mode is revealed in the actual process. A large-scale concentric ring array with a minimum feature size below 50 nm is printed within less than two hours, verifying the capacity of high-throughput, high-resolution and rapidity of printing. The proposed printing method opens the way towards the programming of internal compositions of object (such as functional microdevices with multiple materials).

Raising fluid walls around living cells

An effective transformation of the cell culture dishes that biologists use every day into microfluidic devices would open many avenues for miniaturizing cell-based workflows. In this article, we report a simple method for creating microfluidic arrangements around cells already growing on the surface of standard petri dishes, using the interface between immiscible fluids as a "building material." Conventional dishes are repurposed into sophisticated microfluidic devices by reshaping, on demand, the fluid structures around living cells. Moreover, these microfluidic arrangements can be further reconfigured during experiments, which is impossible with most existing microfluidic platforms. The method is demonstrated using workflows involving cell cloning, the selection of a particular clone from among others in a dish, drug treatments, and wound healing. The versatility of the approach and its biologically friendly aspects may hasten uptake by biologists of microfluidics, so the technology finally fulfills its potential.

Bioinspired transfer method for the patterning of multiple nanomaterials

Patterned nanomaterials have promising applications in various fields, particularly for microfluidic analysis and functional surfaces.

Precise Placement of Microbubble Templates at Single Entity Resolution

Microbubbles have been used as a soft template to produce hollow structures for diverse applications in chemistry, materials science, and biomedicine. It is a challenge, however, to control their size and position at single-entity level. We report on an on-demand method to produce and place a single microbubble with programmed size and position. The method exploits scanning an electrolyte-filled micropipette to place a hydrogen (H₂) bubble, generated by water electrolysis, on the desired position. The bubble growth is self-limited after the bubble size fits to the pipet aperture, yielding well-controlled bubble size. The bubble growth dynamics within the pipet is successfully investigated by a methodology that combines phase-contrast X-ray imaging and electric-current measurement. We show that the microbubbles, accurately controlled in size and position, can be used for the fabrication of various polypyrrole microcontainer arrays. We expect the scanning-pipet strategy could be generalized for manipulating various soft materials at will.
