Probing of Local Multifield Coupling Phenomena of Advanced Materials by Scanning Probe Microscopy Techniques

Experimental demonstration of tunable hybrid improper ferroelectricity in double-perovskite superlattice films

Hybrid improper ferroelectricity can effectively avoid the intrinsic chemical incompatibility of electronic mechanism for multiferroics. Perovskite superlattices, as theoretically proposed hybrid improper ferroelectrics with simple structure and high technological compatibility, are conducive to device integration and miniaturization, but the experimental realization remains elusive. Here, we report a strain-driven oxygen octahedral distortion strategy for hybrid improper ferroelectricity in La2NiMnO6/La2CoMnO6 double-perovskite superlattices. The epitaxial growth mode with mixed crystalline orientations maintains a large strain transfer distance more than 90 nm in the superlattice films with lattice mismatch less than 1%. Such epitaxial strain permits sustainable long-range modulation of oxygen octahedral rotation and tilting, thereby inducing and regulating hybrid improper ferroelectricity. A robust room-temperature ferroelectricity with remnant polarization of ~ 0.16 μC cm-2 and piezoelectric coefficient of 2.0 pm V-1 is obtained, and the density functional theory calculations and Landau-Ginsburg-Devonshire theory reveal the constitutive correlations between ferroelectricity, octahedral distortions, and strain. This work addresses the gap in experimental studies of hybrid improper ferroelectricity for perovskite superlattices and provides a promising research platform and idea for designing and exploring hybrid improper ferroelectricity.

A comparative study on 3D printing-assisted arthroscopic IDEAL point femoral tunnel positioning for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction versus conventional arthroscopic positioning

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and precision of using a 3D-printed template for femoral tunnel placement in guiding the optimal positioning of the Internal anatomical stop and Low tension maintenance (IDEAL) bone tunnel during single-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.

METHODS

A retrospective analysis was conducted on 40 patients who underwent arthroscopic single-bundle ACL reconstruction at our hospital between April 2021 and November 2021. In the direct vision group, the IDEAL bone tunnel was positioned using radiofrequency localization directly visualized at the stump. In the 3D-printed positioning group, preoperative CT scans and Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) data were employed. Following the Quadrant method by Bernard, the femoral tunnel's depth was set at 25% and its height at 29%. Postoperative plain CT scans enabled the reconstruction of 3D models for both groups. The accuracy of femoral tunnel placement was then compared.

RESULTS

The central locations of the bone tunnels in the direct vision group were at a mean depth of 25.74 ± 1.84% and a height of 29.22 ± 2.97%. In the 3D printing localization group, these values were 25.39 ± 2.98% for depth and 28.89 ± 2.50% for height, respectively. No significant differences were found in tunnel positioning between the groups. Both groups demonstrated statistically significant improvements in International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Form (IKDC) and Lysholm scores postoperatively, with no significant differences observed 12 months post-surgery.

CONCLUSION

The findings of this study suggest that 3D printing-assisted arthroscopic IDEAL point femoral tunnel positioning and conventional arthroscopic positioning are feasible and effective for ACL reconstruction. Using 3D printing technology to design femoral anchor points in ACL reconstruction allows for the customization of anterior fork reconstruction and precise bone tunnel positioning, supporting the goal of individualized and accurate reconstruction.

Molecular Design of a Metal-Nitrosyl Ferroelectric with Reversible Photoisomerization

The development of photo-responsive ferroelectrics whose polarization may be remotely controlled by optical means is of fundamental importance for basic research and technological applications. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a new metal-nitrosyl ferroelectric crystal (DMA)(PIP)[Fe(CN)₅(NO)] (1) (DMA = dimethylammonium, PIP = piperidinium) with potential phototunable polarization via a dual-organic-cation molecular design strategy. Compared to the parent non-ferroelectric (MA)₂[Fe(CN)₅(NO)] (MA = methylammonium) material with a phase transition at 207 K, the introduction of larger dual organic cations both lowers the crystal symmetry affording robust ferroelectricity and increases the energy barrier of molecular motions, endowing 1 with a large polarization of up to 7.6 μC cm^-2 and a high Curie temperature (T_c) of 316 K. Infrared spectroscopy shows that the reversible photoisomerization of the nitrosyl ligand is accomplished by light irradiation. Specifically, the ground state with the N-bound nitrosyl ligand conformation can be reversibly switched to both the metastable state I (MSI) with isonitrosyl conformation and the metastable state II (MSII) with side-on nitrosyl conformation. Quantum chemistry calculations suggest that the photoisomerization significantly changes the dipole moment of the [Fe(CN)₅(NO)]^2- anion, thus leading to three ferroelectric states with different values of macroscopic polarization. Such optical accessibility and controllability of different ferroelectric states via photoinduced nitrosyl linkage isomerization open up a new and attractive route to optically controllable macroscopic polarization.

Polymer Nanocomposite Dielectrics: Understanding the Matrix/Particle Interface

Polymer nanocomposite dielectrics possess exceptional electric properties that are absent in the pristine dielectric polymers. The matrix/particle interface in polymer nanocomposite dielectrics is suggested to play decisive roles on the bulk material performance. Herein, we present a critical overview of recent research advances and important insights in understanding the matrix/particle interfacial characteristics in polymer nanocomposite dielectrics. The primary experimental strategies and state-of-the-art characterization techniques for resolving the local property-structure correlation of the matrix/particle interface are dissected in depth, with a focus on the characterization capabilities of each strategy or technique that other approaches cannot compete with. Limitations to each of the experimental strategy are evaluated as well. In the last section of this Review, we summarize and compare the three experimental strategies from multiple aspects and point out their advantages and disadvantages, critical issues, and possible experimental schemes to be established. Finally, the authors' personal viewpoints regarding the challenges of the existing experimental strategies are presented, and potential directions for the interface study are proposed for future research.

Design and implementation of sequential excitation module for high fidelity piezoresponse force microscopy

The acquisition of accurate information through a contact resonance mode is critical for mapping weak electromechanical effect reliably by using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). However, it is very challenging to track resonance frequency shifting when the contact stiffness from the sample varies significantly. In this work, we have developed a sequential excitation (SE) module to enable high fidelity PFM. A customized discrete frequency sweep signal from an arbitrary waveform generator is used for drive excitation so that resonance frequency tracking is no longer necessary. Furthermore, the AC component of the piezoresponse is sampled by using an oscilloscope instead of using lock-in amplifiers. To accommodate high volume of data acquisition, a fast analysis method is also developed to fit the transfer function of the cantilever efficiently on the fly during scanning. Hardware implementation and data processing are described in detail. The capability of our SE module has been demonstrated on an ordinary PMN-PT film via first and second harmonic PFM, as well as a suspended freestanding MoS₂ membrane that is very challenging to probe due to its substantial variation in contact stiffness.

Phase Transition Effect on Ferroelectric Domain Surface Charge Dynamics in BaTiO3 Single Crystal

The ferroelectric domain surface charge dynamics after a cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition on the BaTiO₃ single crystal (001) surface was directly measured through scanning probe microscopy. The captured surface potential distribution shows significant changes: the domain structures formed rapidly, but the surface potential on polarized c domain was unstable and reversed its sign after lengthy lapse; the high broad potential barrier burst at the corrugated a-c domain wall and continued to dissipate thereafter. The generation of polarization charges and the migration of surface screening charges in the surrounding environment take the main responsibility in the experiment. Furthermore, the a-c domain wall suffers large topological defects and polarity variation, resulting in domain wall broadening and stress changes. Thus, the a-c domain wall has excess energy and polarization change is inclined to assemble on it. The potential barrier decay with time after exposing to the surrounding environment also gave proof of the surface screening charge migration at surface. Thus, both domain and domain wall characteristics should be taken into account in ferroelectric application.

Humidity Effects on Domain Structure and Polarization Switching of Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-x%PbTiO3 (PZN-x%PT) Single Crystals

The effect of relative humidity on the domain structure imaging and polarization switching process of Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-x%PbTiO3 (PZN-x%PT) ferroelectric single crystals has been investigated by means of the piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) and piezoresponse force spectroscopy (PFS) techniques. It was found that the PFM amplitude increases with the relative humidity, and that the ferroelectric hysteresis loops at different relative humidity levels show that the coercive bias decreases with the increase in relative humidity. These observed phenomena are attributed to the existence of the water layer between the probe tip and the sample surface in a humid atmosphere, which could affect the effect of the electric field distribution and screening properties at the ferroelectric sample surface. These results provide a better understanding of the water adsorption phenomena at the nanoscale in regard to the fundamental understanding of ferroelectrics' properties.

AFM-IR probing the influence of polarization on the expression of proteins within single macrophages

Macrophages are essential in innate immunity and are involved in a variety of biological functions. Due to high plasticity, macrophages are polarized in different phenotypes depending on different microenvironments to perform specific functions. Although many studies have focused on macrophage polarization, few have explored the polarization characteristics of macrophages at the subcellular level, even at nanoscale resolution. Here, we utilize AFM-based infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) to investigate the influence of an inducer on the expressed proteins of M1/M2 macrophages (induced by LPS and IL-13, respectively). The results from AFM-IR combined with principal component analysis revealed that the characteristic proteins within M1 contain about 35% antiparallel β-sheets (due to the high expression of TNF-α), while the proteins within M2 are made up of approximately 38.8% α-helices. The corresponding nanoscale chemical mapping demonstrates a remarkably heterogeneous distribution of expressed proteins inside single macrophages. Beside the biochemical properties, the biomechanical properties of macrophages were found to be softened in response to the polarization process.

Interfacial Mechanical Strength Enhancement for High-Performance ZnS Thin-Film Anodes

Thin-film lithium-ion microbatteries with a high energy density and long lifespan are exceedingly desired for developing self-powered integrated micro-nano devices and systems. However, exploring high-performance thin-film anodes still remains a challenge. Herein, a double-layer-structure diamond-like carbon-ZnS (DLC-ZnS) thin-film anode fabricated by radio frequency magnetron sputtering exhibits high specific capacity and good cycling stability up to 1000 cycles, superior to the pure ZnS thin-film anode. To understand the mechanism, the bimodal amplitude modulated-frequency modulated atomic force microscopy was used to explore the mechanical properties of the thin films, and the DLC layer shows significantly higher Young's modulus than the ZnS thin film. The DLC interface with a high Young's modulus can effectively buffer the mechanical stress originating from the huge volume changes of the ZnS layer during lithiation/delithiation processes; therefore, the DLC interface maintains the higher mechanical integrity of the DLC-ZnS thin film and improves the utilization of ZnS. In addition, the electrochemical kinetics of the DLC-ZnS and ZnS thin films were also investigated by electrochemical methods. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests indicate the obstacle of the DLC interface to Li⁺ ion diffusion in the initial charge/discharge processes; however, the DLC-ZnS thin film exhibits lower total resistance than the ZnS thin film afterward. In particular, galvanostatic intermittent titration technique tests were performed to find out the differences between the two thin films during the galvanostatical charge/discharge processes. The results demonstrate the obviously enhanced conversion reaction reversibility and decreased alloy reaction polarization of the DLC-ZnS thin film; therefore, it delivers higher reversible capacity.

Electro-opto-mechano driven reversible multi-state memory devices based on photocurrent in Bi0.9Eu0.1FeO3/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3/PMN-PT heterostructures

A single device with extensive new functionality is highly attractive for the increasing demands for complex and multifunctional optoelectronics. Multi-field coupling has been drawing considerable attention because it leads to materials that can be simultaneously operated under several external stimuli (e.g. magnetic field, electric field, electric current, light, strain, etc.), which allows each unit to store multiple bits of information and thus enhance the memory density. In this work, we report an electro-opto-mechano-driven reversible multi-state memory device based on photocurrent in Bi0.9Eu0.1FeO3 (BEFO)/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO)/0.7Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.3PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) heterostructures. It is found that the short-circuit current density (J sc) can be switched by the variation of the potential barrier height and depletion region width at the Pt/BEFO interface modulated by light illumination, external strain, and ferroelectric polarization reversal. This work opens up pathways toward the emergence of novel device design features with dynamic control for developing high-performance electric-optical-mechanism integrated devices based on the BiFeO3-based heterostructures.

High-throughput sequential excitation for nanoscale mapping of electrochemical strain in granular ceria

Dynamic strain based atomic force microscopy (AFM) modes often fail at the interfaces where the most interesting physics occurs because of their incapability of tracking contact resonance accurately under rough topography. To overcome this difficulty, we develop a high-throughput sequential excitation AFM that captures contact dynamics of probe-sample interactions with high fidelity and efficiency, acquiring the spectrum of data on each pixel over a range of frequencies that are excited in a sequential manner. Using electrochemically active granular ceria as an example, we map both linear and quadratic electrochemical strain accurately across grain boundaries with high spatial resolution where the conventional approach fails. The enhanced electrochemical responses point to the accumulation of small polarons in the space charge region at the grain boundaries, thought to be responsible for the enhanced electronic conductivity in nanocrystalline ceria. The spectrum of data can be processed very efficiently by physics-informed principal component analysis (PCA), speeding data processing by several orders of magnitude. This approach can be applied to a variety of AFM modes for studying a wide range of materials and structures on the nanoscale.

Failure Mechanism and Interface Engineering for NASICON-Structured All-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

All-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLiMB) have been considered as one of the most promising next-generation high-energy storage systems that replace liquid organic electrolytes by solid-state electrolytes (SSE). Among many different types of SSE, NASICON-structured Li_{1+ x}Al _xGe_{2- x}(PO₃)₄ (LAGP) shows high a ionic conductivity, high stability against moisture, and wide working electrochemical windows. However, it is unstable when it is in contact with molten Li, hence largely limiting its applications in ASSLiMB. To solve this issue, we have studied reaction processes and mechanisms between LAGP and molten Li, based on which a failure mechanism is hence proposed. With better understanding the failure mechanism, a thin thermosetting Li salt polymer, P(AA- co-MA)Li, layer is coated on the bare LAGP pellet before contacting with molten Li. To further increase the ionic conductivity of P(AA- co-MA)Li, LiCl is added in P(AA- co-MA)Li. A symmetric cell of Li/interface/LAGP/interface/Li is prepared using molten Li-Sn alloy and galvanically cycled at current densities of 15, 30, and 70 μA cm^-2 for 100 cycles, showing stable low overpotentials of 0.036, 0.105, and 0.257 V, respectively. These electrochemical results demonstrate that the interface coating of P(AA- co-MA)Li can be an effective method to avoid an interfacial reaction between the LAGP electrolyte and molten Li.
