Implantable bioelectrodes: challenges, strategies, and future directions

Implantable bioelectrodes for regulating and monitoring biological behaviors have become indispensable medical devices in modern healthcare, alleviating pathological symptoms such as epilepsy and arrhythmia, and assisting in reversing conditions such as deafness and blindness. In recent years, developments in the fields of materials science and biomedical engineering have contributed to advances in research on implantable bioelectrodes. However, the foreign body reaction (FBR) is still a major constraint for the long-term application of electrodes. In this paper, four types of commonly used implantable bioelectrodes are reviewed, concentrating on their background, development, and a series of complications caused by FBR after long-term implantation. Strategies for resisting FBRs are then devised in terms of physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology. We analyze the major trends in the future development of implantable bioelectrodes and outline some promising research to optimize the long-term operational stability of electrodes. Although current implantable bioelectrodes have been able to achieve good biocompatibility, low impedance, and low mechanical mismatch and trauma, these devices still face the challenge of FBR. Resistance to FBR is still the key for the long-term effectiveness of bioelectrodes, and a better understanding of the mechanisms of FBR, as well as miniaturization, long-term passivation, and coupling with gene therapy may be the way forward for the next generation of implantable bioelectrodes.

Construction of Triboelectric Series and Chirality Detection of Amino Acids Using Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Triboelectrification necessitates a frictional interaction between two materials, and their contact electrification is characteristically based on the polarity variance in the triboelectric series. Utilizing this fundamental advantage of the triboelectric phenomenon, different materials can be identified according to their contact electrification capability. Herein, an in-depth analysis of the amino acids present in the stratum corneum of human skin is performed and these are quantified regarding triboelectric polarization. The principal focus of this study lies in analyzing and identifying the amino acids present in copious amounts in the stratum corneum to explain their positive behavior during the contact electrification process. Thus, an augmented triboelectric series of amino acids with quantified triboelectric charging polarity by scrutinizing the transfer charge, work function, and atomic percentage is presented. Furthermore, the chirality of aspartic acid as it is most susceptible to racemization with clear consequences on the human skin is detected. The study is expected to accelerate research exploiting triboelectrification and provide valuable information on the surface properties and biological activities of these important biomolecules.

Ambient energy harvesting has great potential to contribute to sustainable development and address growing environmental challenges. Converting waste energy from energy-intensive processes and systems (e.g. combustion engines and furnaces) is crucial to reducing their environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions. Compact energy harvesters will also be key to powering the exponentially growing smart devices ecosystem that is part of the Internet of Things, thus enabling futuristic applications that can improve our quality of life (e.g. smart homes, smart cities, smart manufacturing, and smart healthcare). To achieve these goals, innovative materials are needed to efficiently convert ambient energy into electricity through various physical mechanisms, such as the photovoltaic effect, thermoelectricity, piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, and radiofrequency wireless power transfer. By bringing together the perspectives of experts in various types of energy harvesting materials, this Roadmap provides extensive insights into recent advances and present challenges in the field. Additionally, the Roadmap analyses the key performance metrics of these technologies in relation to their ultimate energy conversion limits. Building on these insights, the Roadmap outlines promising directions for future research to fully harness the potential of energy harvesting materials for green energy anytime, anywhere.

A perspective on plant robotics: from bioinspiration to hybrid systems

As miscellaneous as the Plant Kingdom is, correspondingly diverse are the opportunities for taking inspiration from plants for innovations in science and engineering. Especially in robotics, properties like growth, adaptation to environments, ingenious materials, sustainability, and energy-effectiveness of plants provide an extremely rich source of inspiration to develop new technologies-and many of them are still in the beginning of being discovered. In the last decade, researchers have begun to reproduce complex plant functions leading to functionality that goes far beyond conventional robotics and this includes sustainability, resource saving, and eco-friendliness. This perspective drawn by specialists in different related disciplines provides a snapshot from the last decade of research in the field and draws conclusions on the current challenges, unanswered questions on plant functions, plant-inspired robots, bioinspired materials, and plant-hybrid systems looking ahead to the future of these research fields.

Recent Development of Morphology-Controlled Hybrid Nanomaterials for Triboelectric Nanogenerator: A Review

Being cognizant of modern electronic devices, the scientists are continuing to investigate renewable green-energy resources for a decade. Amid different energy harvesting systems, the triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been found to be the most promising mechanical harvesting technology and have drawn attention to generate electrical energy. Thanks to its instant output power, choice to opt for wide-ranging materials, low maintenance cost, easy fabrication process and environmentally friendly nature. Due to numerous working modes of TENGs, it is dedicated to desired application at ambient conditions. In this review, an advance correlation of TENGs have been explained based on the variety of nanostructures, including 0D, 1D, 2D, 3D, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), coordination polymers (CPs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and perovskite materials. Moreover, an overview of previous and current perspectives of various nanomaterials, synthesis, fabrication and their applications in potential fields have been discussed in detail.

Plant Bioelectronics and Biohybrids: The Growing Contribution of Organic Electronic and Carbon-Based Materials

Life in our planet is highly dependent on plants as they are the primary source of food, regulators of the atmosphere, and providers of a variety of materials. In this work, we review the progress on bioelectronic devices for plants and biohybrid systems based on plants, therefore discussing advancements that view plants either from a biological or a technological perspective, respectively. We give an overview on wearable and implantable bioelectronic devices for monitoring and modulating plant physiology that can be used as tools in basic plant science or find application in agriculture. Furthermore, we discuss plant-wearable devices for monitoring a plant's microenvironment that will enable optimization of growth conditions. The review then covers plant biohybrid systems where plants are an integral part of devices or are converted to devices upon functionalization with smart materials, including self-organized electronics, plant nanobionics, and energy applications. The review focuses on advancements based on organic electronic and carbon-based materials and discusses opportunities, challenges, as well as future steps.

Recent Advances in Plant Nanoscience

Plants have complex internal signaling pathways to quickly adjust to environmental changes and harvest energy from the environment. Facing the growing population, there is an urgent need for plant transformation and precise monitoring of plant growth to improve crop yields. Nanotechnology, an interdisciplinary research field, has recently been boosting plant yields and meeting global energy needs. In this context, a new field, "plant nanoscience," which describes the interaction between plants and nanotechnology, emerges as the times require. Nanosensors, nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, and nano-plant genetic engineering are of great help in increasing crop yields. Nanogenerators are helping to develop the potential of plants in the field of energy harvesting. Furthermore, the uptake and internalization of nanomaterials in plants and the possible effects are also worthy of attention. In this review, a forward-looking perspective on the plant nanoscience is presented and feasible solutions for future food shortages and energy crises are provided.

Charge trapping with α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles accompanied by human hair towards an enriched triboelectric series and a sustainable circular bioeconomy

This work reports a new approach to amending polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) by supporting α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles (NPs), thereby generating a material suitable for use as a negative triboelectric material. Additionally, human hair exhibits a profound triboelectrification effect and is a natural regenerative substance, and it was processed into a film to be used as a positive triboelectric material. Spatial distribution of α-Fe₂O₃ NPs, the special surface morphologies of a negative tribological layer containing nano-clefts with controlled sizes and a valley featuring a positive tribolayer based on human hair made it possible to demonstrate facile and scalable fabrication of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) presenting enhanced performance; this nanogenerator produced a mean peak-to-peak voltage of 370.8 V and a mean output power density of 247.2 μW cm^-2 in the vertical contact-separation mode. This study elucidates the fundamental charge transfer mechanism governing the triboelectrification efficiency and its use in harvesting electricity for the further development of powerful TENGs suitable for integration into wearable electronics and self-charging power cells, and the work also illustrates a recycling bioeconomy featuring systematic utilization of human hair waste as a regenerative resource for nature and society.

Biohybrid generators based on living plants and artificial leaves: influence of leaf motion and real wind outdoor energy harvesting

Plants translate wind energy into leaf fluttering and branch motion by reversible tissue deformation. Simultaneously, the outermost structure of the plant, i.e. the dielectric cuticula, and the inner ion-conductive tissue can be used to convert mechanical vibration energy, such as that produced during fluttering in the wind, into electricity by surface contact electrification and electrostatic induction. Constraining a tailored artificial leaf to a plant leaf can enhance oscillations and transient mechanical contacts and thereby increase the electricity outcome. We have studied the effects of wind-induced mechanical interactions between the leaf of a plant (Rhododendron) and a flexible silicone elastomer-based artificial leaf fixed at the petiole on power output and whether performance can be further tuned by altering the vibrational behavior of the artificial leaf. The latter is achieved by modifying a concentrated mass at the tip of the artificial leaf and observing plant-generated current and voltage signals under air flow. In this configuration, the plant-hybrid wind-energy converters can directly power light-emitting diodes and a temperature sensor. Detailed output analysis has revealed that, under all conditions, an increase in wind speed leads to nearly linearly increased voltages and currents. Accordingly, the cumulative sum energy reaches its highest values at the highest wind speed and resulting oscillations of the plant-artificial leaf system. The mass at the tip can, in most cases, be used to increase the voltage amplitude and frequency. Nevertheless, this behavior was found to depend on the individual configuration of the system, such as the leaf morphology. Analysis of these factors under controlled conditions is crucial for optimizing systems meant to operate in unstructured outdoor scenarios. We have established, in a first approach, that the artificial leaf-plant hybrid generator is capable of autonomously generating electricity outdoors under real outdoor wind conditions, even at a low average wind speed of only 1.9 m s^-1.

Structural and Chemical Modifications Towards High-Performance of Triboelectric Nanogenerators

Harvesting abundant mechanical energy has been considered one of the promising technologies for developing autonomous self-powered active sensors, power units, and Internet-of-Things devices. Among various energy harvesting technologies, the triboelectric harvesters based on contact electrification have recently attracted much attention because of their advantages such as high performance, light weight, and simple design. Since the first triboelectric energy-harvesting device was reported, the continuous investigations for improving the output power have been carried out. This review article covers various methods proposed for the performance enhancement of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), such as a triboelectric material selection, surface modification through the introduction of micro-/nano-patterns, and surface chemical functionalization, injecting charges, and their trapping. The main purpose of this work is to highlight and summarize recent advancements towards enhancing the TENG technology performance through implementing different approaches along with their potential applications. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the TENG technology and its factors affecting the output power as material selection, surface physical and chemical modification, charge injection, and trapping techniques.

Fingerpad-Inspired Multimodal Electronic Skin for Material Discrimination and Texture Recognition

Human skin plays a critical role in a person communicating with his or her environment through diverse activities such as touching or deforming an object. Various electronic skin (E-skin) devices have been developed that show functional or geometrical superiority to human skin. However, research into stretchable E-skin that can simultaneously distinguish materials and textures has not been established yet. Here, the first approach to achieving a stretchable multimodal device is reported, that operates on the basis of various electrical properties of piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, and piezoresistivity and that exceeds the capabilities of human tactile perception. The prepared E-skin is composed of a wrinkle-patterned silicon elastomer, hybrid nanomaterials of silver nanowires and zinc oxide nanowires, and a thin elastomeric dielectric layer covering the hybrid nanomaterials, where the dielectric layer exhibits high surface roughness mimicking human fingerprints. This versatile device can identify and distinguish not only mechanical stress from a single stimulus such as pressure, tensile strain, or vibration but also that from a combination of multiple stimuli. With simultaneous sensing and analysis of the integrated stimuli, the approach enables material discrimination and texture recognition for a biomimetic prosthesis when the multifunctional E-skin is applied to a robotic hand.

Biodegradable metal-organic framework MIL-88A for triboelectric nanogenerator

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are multifunctional materials with a unique advantage of high porosity and surface area and size tunability and can be modified without altering the topology. The interesting and desirable properties of MOFs led to their exploration for the triboelectric nanogenerator. Herein, a biodegradable MOF MIL-88A for TENG (MIL-TENG) is reported. MIL-88A can be easily synthesized by coordinating iron chloride and fumaric acid in water, thus offering eco-friendly synthesis. Various materials are selected as opposite layers to MIL-88A to analyze triboelectric behavior and performance. The MIL-TENG exhibits an output trend of TENG_EC < TENG_Kapton < TENG_FEP. The MIL-88A and FEP generated an output voltage of 80 V and an output current of 2.2 μA. The surface potential measurement and electrical output trend suggest the positive triboelectric behavior of MIL-88A concerning FEP and Kapton. The utilization of biomechanical motions and numerous low-rating electronics powered via a capacitor are demonstrated.

Fully Biodegradable Water Droplet Energy Harvester Based on Leaves of Living Plants

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have obtained soaring interest due to their capability for environmental energy harvesting. However, as a harvester for green energy, the frequent adoption of the hardly degradable plastic films is not desirable. Here, we report a fully biodegradable TENG (FBD-TENG) that all elements are made from natural substances, and the utilization of plastic materials is avoided. The leaf cuticle and the inside conductive tissue are utilized as the tribo-material and electrode for one part in the FBD-TENG, and water droplets are employed as the counterpart. By using water droplets to bridge the originally disconnected components into a closed-loop electrical system, we successfully collect energy from the droplet impact onto a plant leaf. The electricity generation phenomenon and the working mechanism of the FBD-TENG have been investigated. Five kinds of plants, as well as rain water droplets, are employed to demonstrate the wide availability of the proposed approach. This study provides a strategy to utilize the pervasively presented electrostatic charges in nature in an eco-friendly way.

Ultralow Quiescent Power-Consumption Wake-Up Technology Based on the Bionic Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Wake-up circuits in smart microsystems make huge contributions to energy conservation of electronic networks in unmanned areas, which still require higher pressure-triggering sensitivity and lower power consumption. In this work, a bionic triboelectric nanogenerator (bTENG) is developed to serve as a self-powered motion sensor in the wake-up circuit, which captures slight mechanical disturbances and overcomes the drawback of conventional self-powered motion sensors in the wake-up circuit that the circuit can only be triggered when a considerable pressure is applied on the sensor. The bTENG mimics the structure of plants and the addition of the leaf-shaped tentacle structures can increase the electrical outputs by four times, which largely extends the detection range of the wake-up circuit. The bTENG can detect both noncontact and contact mechanical disturbances; and voltages generated from both situations can trigger the wake-up system. Moreover, the specially designed circuit that is compatible with the bTENG can help more accurately control the wake-up system and prolong the battery life of the electronic networks to 12.4 times. An intrusion detection system is established in the wake-up circuit to distinguish human motion and judge the scene. This work opens new horizons for wake-up technologies, and provides new routes for persistent sensing.

Unveiling Peritoneum Membrane for a Robust Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are smart alternative energy harvesters to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy to power small and portable electronic devices. A key challenge in fabricating an efficient TENG lies in the choice of an active material in addition to the mechanical stability and robust output performance of the device. This report suggests, for the first time, the use of a peritoneum membrane as a triboelectrically positive material for designing TENGs. The peritoneum covers the abdominal wall and diaphragm of mammals except for the kidneys and the adrenal glands and consists of a structure of a well-defined network of elastic fibers. Our peritoneum-based TENG (p-TENG) can generate an open-circuit output voltage of ∼550 V, output current density of ∼100 mA m^-2, and instantaneous output power density of 9.4 Wm^-2. This work demonstrates the p-TENG as a portable power source, a self-powered pedometer, and a speedometer, which conveys its futuristic applications for health care purposes. Our p-TENG is highly stable, delivering a constant output voltage of ∼550 V over a period of 90 days. The introduction of a biowaste peritoneum membrane as a triboelectrically positive component in the TENG has great potential as a portable alternative energy source owing to its abundance, stability, low cost, and ease of fabrication.

Spiral Steel Wire Based Fiber-Shaped Stretchable and Tailorable Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Wearable Power Source and Active Gesture Sensor

Continuous deforming always leads to the performance degradation of a flexible triboelectric nanogenerator due to the Young's modulus mismatch of different functional layers. In this work, we fabricated a fiber-shaped stretchable and tailorable triboelectric nanogenerator (FST-TENG) based on the geometric construction of a steel wire as electrode and ingenious selection of silicone rubber as triboelectric layer. Owing to the great robustness and continuous conductivity, the FST-TENGs demonstrate high stability, stretchability, and even tailorability. For a single device with ~ 6 cm in length and ~ 3 mm in diameter, the open-circuit voltage of ~ 59.7 V, transferred charge of ~ 23.7 nC, short-circuit current of ~ 2.67 μA and average power of ~ 2.13 μW can be obtained at 2.5 Hz. By knitting several FST-TENGs to be a fabric or a bracelet, it enables to harvest human motion energy and then to drive a wearable electronic device. Finally, it can also be woven on dorsum of glove to monitor the movements of gesture, which can recognize every single finger, different bending angle, and numbers of bent finger by analyzing voltage signals.
