Aluminum Molecular Ring Meets Deep Eutectic Solvents: Adaptive Assembly and Optical Behavior

Different from the previous neutral reaction solvent system, this work explores the synthesis of Al-oxo rings in ionic environments. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) formed by quaternary ammonium salts hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and phenols hydrogen bond donor (HBD) further reduce the melting point of the reaction system and provide an ionic environment. Further, the quaternary ammonium salt was chosen as the HBA because it contains a halogen anion that matches the size of the central cavity of the molecular ring. Based on this thought, five Al8 ion pair cocrystals were synthesized via "DES thermal". The general formula is Q+ ⊂ {Cl@[Al8(BD)8(μ2-OH)4L12]} (AlOC-180-AlOC-185, Q+ = tetrabutylammonium, tetrapropylammonium, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole; HBD = phenol, p-chlorophenol, p-fluorophenol; HL = benzoic acid, 1-naphthoic acid, 1-pyrenecarboxylic acid, anthracene-9-carboxylic acid). Structural studies reveal that the phenol-coordinated Al molecular ring and the quaternary ammonium ion pair form the cocrystal compounds. The halogen anions in the DES component are confined in the center of the molecular ring, and the quaternary ammonium cations are located in the organic shell. Such an adaptive cocrystal binding pattern is particularly evident in the structures coordinated with low-symmetry ligands such as naphthoic acid and pyrene acid. Finally, the optical behavior of these cocrystal compounds is understood from the analysis of crystal structure and theoretical calculation.

Macrocyclic Neutralizer to Polybrene via Direct Host-Guest Complexation

Hexadimethrine bromide (HB), a synthetic polycationic species, was introduced to clinical practice as a heparin antidote and recently used in gene therapy. However, HB causes various complications such as severe red blood cells (RBCs) aggregation and tissue damage. Herein, we have synthesized a water-soluble quaterphen[3]arene containing multiple sulfonate moieties (SQP3) as a novel macrocyclic neutralizer to reverse HB via direct host-guest complexation. SQP3 exhibited a robust binding affinity toward HB with a considerably high association constant of (4.73 ± 0.61) × 107 M-1. Co-dosed with 1 equiv of SQP3, HB-induced RBCs aggregation and blood coagulation could be effectively reversed. In vitro cellular assay verified that complexation of HB with SQP3 significantly decreased reactive oxygen species production, thereby suppressing cell apoptosis. In vivo neutralization efficacy studies demonstrated that HB/SQP3 was capable of alleviating related organic damage caused by HB and improving the survival rate of HB-treated mice from 20 to 100%.

Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon Inclusion Complexes with 2-Hydroxylpropyl-β/γ-Cyclodextrin: Molecular Dynamic Simulation and Spectroscopic Studies

In aqueous and solid media, 2-HP-β/γ-CD inclusion complexes with poly aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) Phenanthrene (PHN), Anthracene (ANT), Benz(a)pyrene (BaP), and Fluoranthene (FLT) were investigated for the first time. The inclusion complexes were characterized and investigated using fluorescence and 1HNMR spectroscopy. The most prevalent complexes consisting of both guests and hosts were those with a 1:1 guest-to-host ratio. The stability constants for the complexes of PHN with 2-HP-β-CD and 2-HP-γ-CD were 85 ± 12 M-1 and 49 ± 29 M-1, respectively. Moreover, the stability constants were found to be 502 ± 46 M-1 and 289 ± 44 M-1 for the complexes of ANT with both hosts. The stability constants for the complexes of BaP with 2-HP-β-CD and 2-HP-γ-CD were (1.5 ± 0.02) × 103 M-1 and (9.41 ± 0.03) × 103 M-1, respectively. The stability constant for the complexes of FLT with 2-HP-β-CD was (1.06 ± 0.06) × 103 M-1. However, FLT was observed to form a weak complex with 2-HP-γ-CD. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations were used to investigate the mechanism and mode of inclusion processes, and to monitor the atomic-level stability of these complexes. The analysis of MD trajectories demonstrated that all guests formed stable inclusion complexes with both hosts throughout the duration of the simulation time, confirming the experimental findings. However, the flexible Hydroxypropyl arms prevented the PAHs from being encapsulated within the cavity; however, a stable exclusion complex was observed. The main forces that influenced the complexation included van der Waals interactions, hydrophobic forces, and C-H⋯π interaction, which contribute to the stability of these complexes.

Coordination cages integrated into swelling poly(ionic liquid)s for guest encapsulation and separation

Coordination cages have been widely reported to bind a variety of guests, which are useful for chemical separation. Although the use of cages in the solid state benefits the recycling, the flexibility, dynamicity, and metal-ligand bond reversibility of solid-state cages are poor, preventing efficient guest encapsulation. Here we report a type of coordination cage-integrated solid materials that can be swelled into gel in water. The material is prepared through incorporation of an anionic FeII4L6 cage as the counterion of a cationic poly(ionic liquid) (MOC@PIL). The immobilized cages within MOC@PILs have been found to greatly affect the swelling ability of MOC@PILs and thus the mechanical properties. Importantly, upon swelling, the uptake of water provides an ideal microenvironment within the gels for the immobilized cages to dynamically move and flex that leads to excellent solution-level guest binding performances. This concept has enabled the use of MOC@PILs as efficient adsorbents for the removal of pollutants from water and for the purification of toluene and cyclohexane. Importantly, MOC@PILs can be regenerated through a deswelling strategy along with the recycling of the extracted guests.

Heat-Set Supramolecular Hydrogelation by Regulating the Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance for a Tunable Circularly Polarized Luminescent Switch

Heat-set supramolecular gels exhibited totally opposite phase behaviors of dissolution upon cooling and gelation on heating. They are commonly discovered by chance and their rational design remains a great challenge. Herein, a rational design strategy is proposed to realize heat-set supramolecular hydrogelation through regulation of the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of the system. A newly synthesized amphiphile hydrogelator with pyrene embedded in its lipophilic terminal can self-assemble into a hydrogel through a heating and cooling cycle. However, the host-guest complex of the gelator and hydrophilic γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CyD) results in a sol at room temperature. Thus, heat-set hydrogelation is realized from the sol state in a controllable manner. Heat-set gelation mechanism is revealed by exploring critical heat-set supramolecular gelation and the related findings provide a general strategy for developing new functional molecular gels with tunable hydrophilic-lipophilic balance.

Macrocycle-Based Hierarchically Porous Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are porous crystalline materials. The pores in HOFs are usually non-covalent extrinsic pores constructed through the formation of the framework. Supramolecular macrocycles with intrinsic pores in their structures are good candidates for constructing HOFs with intrinsic pores from the macrocycles themselves, thus leading to hierarchically porous structures. Combining the macrocycle and HOFs will endow these hierarchically porous materials with enhanced properties and special functionalities. This review summarizes recent advances in macrocycle-based HOFs, including the macrocycles used for constructing HOFs, the hierarchically porous structures of the HOFs, and the applications induced by the hierarchically HOFs porous structures. This review provides insights for future research on macrocycle-based hierarchically porous HOFs and the appropriate applications of the unique structures.

FRET-Based Host-Guest Supramolecular Probe for On-Site and Broad-Spectrum Detection of Pyrethroids in the Environment

The massive use of pyrethroid pesticides in agriculture has brought growing concerns about food safety due to their several harmful effects on human health, especially through the accumulation of the food chain. To date, most of the available analytical methods for pyrethroids still suffer from insufficient detection universality, complicated sample pretreatment, and detection processes, which severely limit their practical applications. Herein, a novel Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET)-assisted host-guest supramolecular nanoassembly is reported, for the first time, successfully realizing ratiometric fluorescent detection of pyrethroids in real samples through the indicator displacement assay (IDA) mechanism. This method is capable of detecting a broad spectrum of pyrethroids, including bifenthrin, cyfluthrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, etofenprox, fenvalerate, and permethrin, with ultrahigh detection sensitivity, great selectivity, high anti-interference ability, and, in particular, distinct emission color response from red to green. Such a large chromatic response makes this method available for fast and on-site detection of pyrethroids in real samples with the aid of several simple portable analytical apparatuses.

A general supramolecular strategy for fabricating full-color-tunable thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials

Developing a facile and feasible strategy to fabricate thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials exhibiting full-color tunability remains an appealing yet challenging task. In this work, a general supramolecular strategy for fabricating thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials is proposed. Consequently, a series of host-guest cocrystals are prepared by electron-donating calix[3]acridan and various electron-withdrawing guests. Owing to the through-space charge transfer mediated by multiple noncovalent interactions, these cocrystals all display efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence. Especially, by delicately modulating the electron-withdrawing ability of the guest molecules, the emission colors of these cocrystals can be continuously tuned from blue (440 nm) to red (610 nm). Meanwhile, high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 87% is achieved. This research not only provides an alternative and general strategy for the fabrication of thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials, but also establishes a reliable supramolecular protocol toward the design of advanced luminescent materials.

Clamparene: Synthesis, Structure, and Its Application in Spontaneous Formation of 3D Porous Crystals

Macrocyclic arenes have emerged as pivotal scaffolds in supramolecular chemistry. Despite their significant contributions to molecular recognition and diverse applications, challenges persist in the development of macrocyclic arene-based crystalline materials, particularly in achieving porosity and addressing limitations in adsorption efficiency resulting from the small cavity sizes of existing macrocyclic arenes. In this study, we present the design and synthesis of a novel macrocyclic arene, clamparene (CLP), featuring a rigid backbone, easy synthesis, and a sizable cavity. CLP self-assembles into one-dimensional sub-nanotubes that further organize into a three-dimensional porous framework in the solid state. The crystalline solid of CLP exhibits potential as a porous crystalline adsorbent for various benzene-based contaminants with rapid adsorption kinetics, large uptake amounts, and good recyclability.

Applications of macrocycle-based solid-state host-guest chemistry

Macrocyclic molecules have been used in various fields owing to their guest binding properties. Macrocycle-based host-guest chemistry in solution can allow for precise control of complex formation. Although solution-phase host-guest complexes are easily prepared, their limited stability and processability prevent widespread application. Extending host-guest chemistry from solution to the solid state results in complexes that are generally more robust, enabling easier processing and broadened applications. Macrocyclic compounds in the solid state can encapsulate guests with larger affinities than their soluble counterparts. This is crucial for use in applications such as separation science and devices. In this Review, we summarize recent progress in macrocycle-based solid-state host-guest chemistry and discuss the basic physical chemistry of these complexes. Representative macrocycles and their solid-state complexes are explored, as well as potential applications. Finally, perspectives and challenges are discussed.

Smart organic materials based on macrocycle hosts

Innovative design of smart organic materials is of great importance for the advancement of modern technology. Macrocycle hosts, possessing cyclic skeletons, intrinsic cavities, and specific guest binding properties, have demonstrated pronounced potential for the elaborate fabrication of a variety of functional organic materials with smart stimuli-responsive characteristics. In this tutorial review, we outline the current development of smart organic materials based on macrocycle hosts as key building blocks, focusing on the design principles and functional mechanisms of the tailored systems. Three main types of macrocycle-based smart organic materials are exemplified as follows according to the distinct forms of construction patterns: (1) supramolecular polymeric materials and nanoassemblies; (2) adaptive molecular crystals; (3) smart porous organic materials. The responsive performances of macrocycle-containing smart materials in versatile aspects, including mechanically adaptive polymers, soft optoelectronic devices, data encryption, drug delivery systems, artificial transmembrane channels, crystalline-state gas adsorption/separation, and fluorescence sensing, are illustrated by discussing the representative studies as paradigms, where the roles of macrocycles in these systems are highlighted. We also provide in the conclusion part the perspectives and remaining challenges in this burgeoning field.

Sequential Water Sorption/Desorption of a Nonporous Adaptive Organic Ligand Bridged Coordination Polymer for Atmospheric Moisture Harvesting

Moisture harvesters with favourable attributes such as easy synthetic availability and good processability as alternatives for atmospheric moisture harvesting (AWH) are desirable. This study reports a novel nonporous anionic coordination polymer (CP) of uranyl squarate with methyl viologen (MV2+ ) as charge balancing ions (named U-Squ-CP) which displays intriguing sequential water sorption/desorption behavior as the relative humidity (RH) changes gradually. The evaluation of AWH performance of U-Squ-CP shows that it can absorb water vapor under air atmosphere at a low RH of 20 % typical of the levels found in most dry regions of the world, and have good cycling durability, thus demonstrating the capability as a potential moisture harvester for AWH. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report on non-porous organic ligand bridged CP materials for AWH. Moreover, a stepwise water-filling mechanism for the water sorption/desorption process is deciphered by comprehensive characterizations combining single-crystal diffraction, which provides a reasonable explanation for the special moisture harvesting behaviour of this non-porous crystalline material.

Grinding-induced supramolecular charge-transfer assemblies with switchable vapochromism toward haloalkane isomers

Synthetic macrocycles have proved to be of great application value in functional charge-transfer systems in the solid state in recent years. Here we show a switchable on-off type vapochromic system toward 1-/2-bromoalkane isomers by constructing solid-state charge-transfer complexes between electron-rich perethylated pillar[5]arene and electron-deficient aromatic acceptors including 4-nitrobenzonitrile and 1,4-dinitrobenzene. These charge-transfer complexes with different colors show opposite color changes upon exposure to the vapors of 1-bromoalkanes (fading) and 2-bromoalkanes (deepening). Single-crystal structures incorporating X-ray powder diffraction and spectral analyses demonstrate that this on-off type vapochromic behavior is mainly attributed to the destruction (off) and reconstruction (on) of the charge-transfer interactions between perethylated pillar[5]arene and the acceptors, for which the competitive host-guest binding of 1-bromoalkanes and the solid-state structural transformation triggered by 2-bromoalkanes are respectively responsible. This work provides a simple colorimetric method for distinguishing positional isomers with similar physical and chemical properties.

Bismacrocycle: Structures and Applications

In the past half-century, macrocycles with different structures and functions, have played a critical role in supramolecular chemistry. Two macrocyclic moieties can be linked to form bismacrocycle molecules. Compared with monomacrocycle, the unique structures of bismacrocycles led to their specific recognition and assembly properties, also a wide range of applications, including molecular recognition, supramolecular self-assembly, advanced optical material construction, etc. In this review, we focus on the structure of bismacrocycle and their applications. Our goal is to summarize and outline the possible future development directions of bismacrocycle research.

Highly Selective Transport and Enrichment of Lithium Ions through Bionic Ion Pair Receptor Nanochannels

Inspired by ion pair cotransport channels in biological systems, a bionic nanochannel modified with lithium ion pair receptors is constructed for selective transport and enrichment of lithium ions (Li⁺). NH₂-pillar[5]arene (NP5) is chosen as ion pair receptors, and the theoretical simulation and NMR titration experiments illustrate that NP5 has good affinity for the ion pair of LiCl through a strong host-guest interaction at the molecular level. Due to the confinement effect and ion pair cooperation recognition, an NP5-based receptor was introduced into an artificial PET nanochannel. An I-V test indicated that the NP5 channel realized the highly selective recognition for Li⁺. Meanwhile, transmembrane transport and COMSOL simulation experiments proved that the NP5 channel achieved the transport and enrichment of Li⁺ through the cooperative interaction between NP5 and LiCl. Moreover, the receptor solution of transmembrane transport LiCl in the NP5 channel was used to cultivate wheat seedlings, which obviously promoted their growth. This nanochannel based on the ion pair recognition will be much useful for practical applications like metal ion extraction, enrichment, and recycle.

Review on Isatin- A Remarkable Scaffold for Designing Potential Therapeutic Complexes and Its Macrocyclic Complexes with Transition Metals

Role of synthetic coordination chemistry in pharmaceutical science is expeditiously increased due to its sundry relevances in this field. The present review endows the synthesized macrocyclic complexes of transition metal ions containing isatin and its derivatives as ligand precursors, their characterization and their copious pharmaceutical applications. Isatin (1H-Indole-2,3-dione) is a protean compound (presence of lactam and keto moiety permits to change its molecular framework) that can be obtained from marine animals, plants, and is also found in mammalian tissues and in human fluids as a metabolite of amino acids. It can be used for the synthesis of miscellaneous organic and inorganic complexes and for designing of drugs since it has remarkable utility in pharmaceutical industry due to its wide range of biological and pharmacological activities, for instance anti-microbial, anti-HIV, anti-tubercular, anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, analgesic activity, anti-Parkinson's disease, anti-convulsant etc. This review provides extensive information about the latest methods for the synthesis of isatin or its substituted derivatives based macrocyclic complexes of transition metals and their plentiful applications in medicinal chemistry.

Macrocycle-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks

Macrocycles with well-defined cavities and the ability to undergo supramolecular interactions are classical materials that have played an essential role in materials science. However, one of the most substantial barriers limiting the utilization of macrocycles is their aggregation, which blocks the active regions. Among many attempted strategies to prevent such aggregation, installing macrocycles into covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which are porous and stable reticular networks, has emerged as an ideal solution. The resulting macrocycle-based COFs (M-COFs) preserve the macrocycles' unique activities, enabling applications in various fields such as single-atom catalysis, adsorption/separation, optoelectronics, phototherapy, and structural design of forming single-layered or mechanically interlocked COFs. The resulting properties are unmatchable by any combination of macrocycles with other substrates, opening a new chapter in advanced materials. This review focuses on the latest progress in the concepts, synthesis, properties, and applications of M-COFs, and presents an in-depth outlook on the challenges and opportunities in this emerging field.

Covalently bridged pillararene-based polymers: structures, synthesis, and applications

Covalently bridged pillararene-based polymers (CBPPs) are a special class of macrocycle-based polymers in which multiple pillararene monomers are attached to the polymer structures by covalent bonds. Owing to the unique molecular structures including the connection components or the spatial structures, CBPPs have become increasingly popular in applications ranging from environmental science to biomedical science. In this review, CBPPs are divided into three types (linear polymers, grafted polymers, and cross-linked polymers) according to their structural characteristics and described from the perspective of synthesis methods comprehensively. In addition, the applications of CBPPs are presented, including selective adsorption and separation, fluorescence sensing and detection, construction of supramolecular gels, anticancer drug delivery, artificial light-harvesting, catalysis, and others. Finally, the current challenging issues and comprehensive prospects of CBPPs are discussed.

Cycling a Tether into Multiple Rings: Pt-Bridged Macrocycles for Differentiated Guest Recognition, Pseudorotaxane Transformations, and Guest Capture and Release

Macrocycle engineering is a key topic in supramolecular chemistry. When synthesizing a ring, one can obtain either complex mixtures of macrocycles of different sizes or a single ring if a template is utilized. Here, we unite these approaches along with post-synthetic modifications to transform a single tether into multiple rings-up to five per tether. The macrocycles contain two bridged phenylpyridine ligands that are connected through a Pt atom, which defines the rings' shape, size, and host activity. All rings undergo redox reactions (between Pt^II and Pt^IV ) that allow for large conformational changes. Their reactivity, together with their host performance, is a convenient way to control the capture and release of guests, to mediate ring transformations, and to control pseudorotaxane-to-pseudorotaxane conversions. This novel approach could serve to assemble other libraries of small ring molecules, create cyclic polymers bridged by responsive-at-metal nodes, and produce processable mechanically interlocked molecules.

On-surface synthesis and spontaneous segregation of conjugated tetraphenylethylene macrocycles

Creating conjugated macrocycles has attracted extensive research interest because their unique chemical and physical properties, such as conformational flexibility, intrinsic inner cavities and aromaticity/antiaromaticity, make these systems appealing building blocks for functional supramolecular materials. Here, we report the synthesis of four-, six- and eight-membered tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based macrocycles on Ag(111) via on-surface Ullmann coupling reactions. The as-synthesized macrocycles are spontaneously segregated on the surface and self-assemble as large-area two-dimensional mono-component supramolecular crystals, as characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We propose that the synthesis benefits from the conformational flexibility of the TPE backbone in distinctive multi-step reaction pathways. This study opens up opportunities for exploring the photophysical properties of TPE-based macrocycles.

Guest-Induced Planar-Chiral Pillar[5]arene Surface for Selectively Adsorbing Protein Based on Host-Guest Chemistry

In living systems, the adsorption of a protein on biointerfaces is a universal phenomenon, such as the specific binding of an antibody and antigen, which plays an important role in body growth and life maintenance. The exploration of a protein-selective adsorption on the biointerface is of great significance for understanding the life process and treatment in vitro. Herein, on the basis of biomimetic strategies, we fabricated a planar-chiral NH₂-pillar[5]arene modified silicon surface (pR-/pS-NP5 surfaces) for a highly enantioselective adsorption of protein by taking advantage of the guest-induced planar chirality of pillar[5]arenes. Results from practical experiments and theoretical calculations show that the pR-NP5 surface possesses a high adsorption capacity and chiral selectivity for bovine serum albumin (BSA). Moreover, it was identified that the guest-induced chiral effect the generation and amplification of planar chirality, which was much beneficial for enhancing the interaction between planar-chiral pillar[5]arene host and BSA. The binding capacity of pR-NP5 and BSA is stronger than that of pS-NP5, thus promoting the chiral selective adsorption of BSA. This work affords a deeper understanding of the chiral influence of protein adsorption on biointerfaces and meanwhile provides a new perspective for chiral-sensing applications.

Pillararene-Inspired Macrocycles: From Extended Pillar[n]arenes to Geminiarenes

chemistry since their establishment due to their innate functional features of molecular recognition and complexation. The rapid development of modern supramolecular chemistry has also significantly benefited from creating new macrocycles with distinctive geometries and properties. For instance, pillar[n]arenes (pillarenes), a relatively young generation of star macrocyclic hosts among the well-established ones (e.g., crown ethers, cyclodextrins, cucurbiturils, and calixarenes), promoted a phenomenal research hotspot all over the world in the past decade. Although the synthesis, host-guest properties, and various supramolecular functions of pillarenes have been intensively studied, many objective limitations and challenges still cannot be ignored. For example, high-level pillar[n]arenes (n > 7) usually do not possess applicable large-sized cavities due to structural folding and cannot be synthesized on a large scale because of the uncompetitive cyclization process. Furthermore, two functional groups must be covalently para-connected to each repeating phenylene unit, which severely limits their structural diversity and flexibility. In this context, we have developed a series of pillarene-inspired macrocycles (PIMs) using a versatile and modular synthetic strategy during the past few years, aiming to break through the synthetic limitations in traditional pillarenes and find new opportunities and challenges in supramolecular chemistry and beyond. Specifically, by grafting biphenyl units into the pillarene backbones, extended pillar[n]arenes with rigid and nanometer-sized cavities could be obtained with reasonable synthetic yields by selectively removing hydroxy/alkoxy substitutes on pillarene backbones, leaning pillar[6]arenes and leggero pillar[n]arenes with enhanced structural flexibility and cavity adaptability were obtained. By combining the two types of bridging modes in pillarenes and calixarenes, a smart macrocyclic receptor with two different but interconvertible conformational features, namely geminiarene, was discovered. Benefiting from the synthetic accessibility, facile functionalization, and superior host-guest properties in solution or the solid state, this new family of macrocycles has exhibited a broad range of applications, including but not limited to supramolecular assembly/gelation/polymers, pollutant detection and separation, porous organic polymers, crystalline/amorphous molecular materials, hybrid materials, and controlled drug delivery. Thus, in this Account, we summarize our research efforts on these PIMs. We first present an overview of their design and modular synthesis and a summary of their derivatization strategies. Thereafter, particular attention is paid to their structural features, supramolecular functions, and application exploration. Finally, the remaining challenges and perspectives are outlined for their future development. We hope that this Account and our works can stimulate further advances in synthetic macrocyclic chemistry and supramolecular functional systems, leading to practical applications in various research areas.

A self-complementary macrocycle by a dual interaction system

Self-complementary assembly is one of the most promising phenomena for the formation of discrete assemblies, e.g., proteins and capsids. However, self-complementary assembly based on multiple host-guest systems has been scarcely reported due to the difficulty in controlling each assembly. Herein, we report a dual interaction system in which the key assembly direction is well regulated by both π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding to construct a self-complementary macrocycle. Continuous host-guest behavior of anthracene-based molecular tweezers during crystallization leads to successful construction of a cyclic hexamer, which is reminiscent of Kekulé’s monkey model. Furthermore, the cyclic hexamer in a tight and triple-layered fashion shows hierarchical assembly into cuboctahedron and rhombohedral assemblies in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid. Our findings would be potentially one of metal-free strategies for constructing anthracene-based supramolecular assemblies with higher-order structure.

Organo-macrocycle-containing hierarchical metal-organic frameworks and cages: design, structures, and applications

Developing hierarchical ordered systems is challenging. Using organo-macrocycles to construct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous coordination cages (PCCs) provides an efficient way to obtain hierarchical assemblies. Macrocycles, such as crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, cucurbiturils, and pillararenes, can be incorporated within MOFs/PCCs and they also endow the resultant composites with enhanced properties and functionalities. This review summarizes recent developments of organo-macrocycle-containing hierarchical MOFs/PCCs, emphasizing applications and structure-property relationships of these hierarchically porous materials. This review provides insights for future research on hierarchical self-assembly using macrocycles as building blocks and functional ligands to extend the applications of the composites.

Monofunctionalized Fluorinated Bambusurils and Their Conjugates for Anion Transport and Extraction

Bambusurils are macrocyclic molecules that are known for their high binding affinity and selectivity toward anions. Here, we present the preparation of two bambusurils bearing fluorinated substituents and one carboxylic function. These monofunctionalized bambusurils were conjugated with crown ether and cholesterol units. The resulting conjugates were successfully tested in liquid-liquid extraction of inorganic salts and chloride/bicarbonate transport across lipid bilayers.

Substituent-Controlled Structural, Supramolecular, and Cytotoxic Properties of a Series of 2-Styryl-8-nitro and 2-Styryl-8-hydroxy Quinolines

Styryl quinolines are biologically active compounds with properties largely depending on the substituents on the styryl and quinoline rings. The supramolecular aspects of this class of compounds are rarely explored. In this study, two new series of styryl quinoline derivatives, bearing -OH and -NO₂ groups at the eighthposition of the quinoline ring and -SCH₃, -OCH₃, and -Br groups on the styryl ring, have been developed, and their structural, supramolecular, and cytotoxic properties have been analyzed. Crystallographic analyses revealed the exciting substituent-dependent structural and supramolecular features of these compounds. In general, the 8 -OH substituted derivatives (SA series) exhibited a non-planar molecular geometry having larger dihedral angles (5.75-59.3°) between the planes of the aromatic rings. At the same time, the 8 -NO₂ substituted derivatives (SB series) exhibited a more or less planar molecular geometry, as revealed by the smaller dihedral angles (1.32-3.45°) between the aromatic rings. Multiple O-H···O, C-H···O, O-H···N, and π-π stacking interactions among the molecules lead to fascinating supramolecular architectures such as hydrogen-bonded triple helices, zig-zag 1D chains, π-π stacked infinite chains, and so forth in their crystal lattice. Hirshfeld surface analyses confirmed the existence of strong π-π stacking and other weak bonding interactions in these compounds. The preliminary cytotoxic properties of SA and SB series compounds were evaluated against the human cervical cancer cell lines (HeLa cells), which further highlighted the roles of functional substituents on the aromatic rings. The SA series compounds with the -OH substituent on the quinoline ring exhibited better cytotoxicity than the SB series compounds with a -NO₂ substituent. Similarly, the electron-withdrawing group -Br on the styryl ring enhanced the cytotoxicity in both series. The IC₅₀ values were 2.52-4.69 and 2.897-10.37 μM, respectively, for the SA and SB series compounds. Compound S3A having -OH and -Br groups on the quinoline and styryl ring, respectively, exhibited the best IC₅₀ value of 2.52 μM among all the compounds tested. These findings confirm the relevance of the hydroxyl group in the eighth position of quinoline. In short, the present study attempts to provide a systematic analysis of the effects of aromatic ring substituents on the structural, supramolecular, and cytotoxic properties of styryl quinolines for the first time.

Transformation of Porous Organic Cages and Covalent Organic Frameworks with Efficient Iodine Vapor Capture Performance

The reaction of 5,5'-([2,2'-bipyridine]-5,5'-diyl)diisophthalaldehyde (BPDDP) with cyclohexanediamine and [benzidine (BZ)/[2,2'-bipyridine]-5,5'-diamine (BPDA)], respectively, affords a nitrogen-rich porous organic cage BPPOC and two two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs), USTB-1 and USTB-2 (USTB = University of Science and Technology Beijing), under suitable conditions. Interestingly, BPPOC with a single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure is able to successfully transform into USTB-1 and USTB-2 (newly converted COFs denoted as USTB-1c and USTB-2c, respectively) upon exchange of the imine unit of cyclohexanediamine in the cage by BZ and BPDA. Such a transformation also enables the isolation of analogous COFs (USTB-3c and USTB-4c) on the basis of an isostructural organic cage, BTPOC, which is derived from 5,5'-([2,2'-bithiophene]-4,4'-diyl)diisophthalaldehyde (BTDDP) and cyclohexanediamine. However, the conventional solvothermal reaction between BTDDP and BPDA leads to an impure phase of USTB-4 containing incompletely converted aldehyde groups due to the limited solubility of the building block. The newly prepared COFs have been characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. In particular, BPPOC is able to absorb the iodine vapor with an uptake of 5.64 g g^-1, breaking the porous organic cage's (POC's) record value of 3.78 g g^-1. Nevertheless, the cage-derived COFs exhibit improved iodine vapor adsorption capability in comparison with the directly synthesized counterparts, with the highest uptake of 5.80 g g^-1 for USTB-1c. The mechanism investigation unveils the superiority of nitrogen atoms to sulfur atoms for POCs in iodine vapor capture with the assistance of definite crystal structures. This, in combination with porosity, synergistically influences the iodine vapor capture capacity of COFs.

Guest-induced amorphous-to-crystalline transformation enables sorting of haloalkane isomers with near-perfect selectivity

The separation of haloalkane isomers with distillation-free strategies is one of the most challenging research topics in fundamental research and also gave high guiding values to practical industrial applications. Here, this contribution provides a previously unidentified solid supramolecular adsorption material based on a leggero pillararene derivative BrP[5]L, which can separate 1-/2-bromoalkane isomers with near-ideal selectivity. Activated solids of BrP[5]L with interesting amorphous and nonporous features could adsorb 1-bromopropane and 1-bromobutane from the corresponding equal volume mixtures of 1-/2-positional isomers with purities of 98.1 and 99.0%, respectively. Single-crystal structures incorporating theoretical calculation reveal that the high selectivity originates from the higher thermostability of 1-bromoalkane-loaded structures compared to its corresponding isomer-loaded structures, which could be further attributed to the perfect size/shape match between BrP[5]L and 1-bromoalkanes. Moreover, control experiments using its counterpart macrocycle of traditional pillararene demonstrate that BrP[5]L has better adsorptive selectivity, benefiting from the intrinsic free-rotation phenylene subunit on its backbone.

Multicharged cyclodextrin supramolecular assemblies

Multicharged cyclodextrin (CD) supramolecular assemblies, including those based on positively/negatively charged modified mono-6-deoxy-CDs, per-6-deoxy-CDs, and random 2,3,6-deoxy-CDs, as well as parent CDs binding positively/negatively charged guests, have been extensively applied in chemistry, materials science, medicine, biological science, catalysis, and other fields. In this review, we primarily focus on summarizing the recent advances in positively/negatively charged CDs and parent CDs encapsulating positively/negatively charged guests, especially the construction process of supramolecular assemblies and their applications. Compared with uncharged CDs, multicharged CDs display remarkably high antiviral and antibacterial activity as well as efficient protein fibrosis inhibition. Meanwhile, charged CDs can interact with oppositely charged dyes, drugs, polymers, and biomacromolecules to achieve effective encapsulation and aggregation. Consequently, multicharged CD supramolecular assemblies show great advantages in improving drug-delivery efficiency, the luminescence properties of materials, molecular recognition and imaging, and the toughness of supramolecular hydrogels, in addition to enabling the construction of multistimuli-responsive assemblies. These features are anticipated to not only promote the development of CD-based supramolecular chemistry but also contribute to the rapid exploitation of these assemblies in diverse interdisciplinary applications.

An electrically conductive metallocycle: densely packed molecular hexagons with π-stacked radicals

Electrical conduction among metallocycles has been unexplored because of the difficulty in creating electronic transport pathways. In this work, we present an electrocrystallization strategy for synthesizing an intrinsically electron-conductive metallocycle, [Ni6(NDI-Hpz)6(dma)12(NO3)6]·5DMA·nH2O (PMC-hexagon) (NDI-Hpz = N,N'-di(1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxdiimide). The hexagonal metallocycle units are assembled into a densely packed ABCABC… sequence (like the fcc geometry) to construct one-dimensional (1D) helical π-stacked columns and 1D pore channels, which were maintained under the liberation of H2O molecules. The NDI cores were partially reduced to form radicals as charge carriers, resulting in a room-temperature conductivity of (1.2-2.1) × 10-4 S cm-1 (pressed pellet), which is superior to that of most NDI-based conductors including metal-organic frameworks and organic crystals. These findings open up the use of metallocycles as building blocks for fabricating conductive porous molecular materials.

Organoplatinum(II) Cruciform: A Versatile Building Block to Fabricate 2D Microcrystals with Full-Color and White Phosphorescence and Anisotropic Photon Transport

Conventional square-planar platinum complexes typically form one-dimensional assemblies as a result of unidirectional metallophilic and/or π⋅⋅⋅π intermolecular interactions. Organoplatinum(II) complexes with a cruciform shape are presented herein to construct two-dimensional (2D) microcrystals with full-color and white phosphorescence. These 2D crystals show unique monocomponent π⋅⋅⋅π stacking, from either the cyclometalating or noncyclometalating ligand, and the bicomponent alternate π⋅⋅⋅π stacking from both ligands along different facet directions. Anisotropic tri-directional waveguiding is further implemented on a single hexagonal microcrystal. These results demonstrate the great capability of the organoplatinum(II) cruciform as a general platform to fabricate 2D phosphorescent micro-/nanocrystals for advanced photonic applications.

Macrocycle-Based Porous Organic Polymers for Separation, Sensing, and Catalysis

With the rapid development of materials science, porous organic polymers (POPs) have received remarkable attentions because of their unique properties such as the exceptionally high surface area and flexible molecular design. The ability to incorporate specific functions in a precise manner makes POPs promising platforms for a myriad of applications in molecular adsorption, separation, and catalysis. Therefore, many different types of POPs have been rationally designed and synthesized to expand the scope of advanced materials, endowing them with distinct structures and properties. Recently, supramolecular macrocycles with excellent host-guest complexation abilities are emerging as powerful crosslinkers for developing novel POPs with hierarchical structures and improved performance, which can be well-organized at different spatial scales. Macrocycle-based POPs could have unusual porous, adsorptive, and optical properties when compared to their nonmacrocycle-incorporated counterparts. This cooperation provides valuable insights for the molecular-level understanding of skeletal complexity and diversity. Here, the research advances of macrocycle-based POPs are aptly summarized by showing their syntheses, properties, and applications in terms of separation, sensing, and catalysis. Finally, the current challenging issues in this exciting research field are delineated and a comprehensive outlook is offered for their future directions.

Fabrication of Host-Guest Complexes between Adamantane-Functionalized 1,3,4-Oxadiazoles and β-Cyclodextrin with Improved Control Efficiency against Intractable Plant Bacterial Diseases

Supramolecular chemistry provides huge potentials and opportunities in agricultural pest management. In an attempt to develop highly bioactive, eco-friendly, and biocompatible supramolecular complexes for managing intractable plant bacterial diseases, herein, a type of interesting adamantane-functionalized 1,3,4-oxadiazole was rationally prepared to facilitate the formation of supramolecular complexes via β-cyclodextrin-adamantane host-guest interactions. Initial antibacterial screening revealed that most of these adamantane-decorated 1,3,4-oxadiazoles were obviously bioactive against three typically destructive phytopathogens. The lowest EC₅₀ values could reach 0.936 (III₁₈), 0.889 (III₁₈), and 2.10 (III₁₉) μg/mL against the corresponding Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac), and Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa). Next, the representative supramolecular binary complex III₁₈@β-CD (binding mode 1:1) was successfully fabricated and characterized by ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Eventually, correlative water solubility and foliar surface wettability were significantly improved after the formation of host-guest assemblies. In vivo antibacterial evaluation found that the achieved supramolecular complex could distinctly alleviate the disease symptoms and promote the control efficiencies against rice bacterial blight (from 34.6-35.7% (III₁₈) to 40.3-43.6% (III₁₈@β-CD)) and kiwi canker diseases (from 41.0-42.3% (III₁₈) to 53.9-68.0% (III₁₈@β-CD)) at 200 μg/mL (active ingredient). The current study can provide a feasible platform and insight for constructing biocompatible supramolecular assemblies for managing destructive bacterial infections in agriculture.

Bottom-Up Solid-State Molecular Assembly via Guest-Induced Intermolecular Interactions

The manipulation of molecular motions to construct highly ordered supramolecular architectures from chaos in the solid state is considered to be far more complex and challenging in comparison to that in solution. In this work, a bottom-up molecular assembly approach based on a newly designed skeleton-trimmed pillar[5]arene analogue, namely the permethylated leggero pillar[5]arene MeP[5]L, is developed in the solid state. An amorphous powder of MeP[5]L can take up certain guest vapors to form various ordered linker-containing solid-state molecular assemblies, which can be further used to construct a thermodynamically favored linker-free superstructure upon heating. These approaches are driven by vapor-induced solid-state molecular motions followed by a thermally triggered phase-to-phase transformation. The intermolecular interactions play a crucial role in controlling the molecular arrangements in the resulting assemblies. This research will open new insights into exploring controllable molecular motions and assemblies in the solid state, providing new perspectives in supramolecular chemistry and materials.

Spiro-based diamond-type nanogrids (DGs) via two ways: 'A1B1'/'A2 + B2' type gridization of vertical spiro-based fluorenol synthons

Regular or well-defined nanogrids with atomically precise extension sites offer an opportunity for covalent nano-architectures as well as frameworks. Previously, we discovered organic nanogrids based on the 2,7-linkage of fluorene via Friedel-Crafts gridization. However, the regularity of nanogrids is not always based on the actual molecular backbone, which leads to ineffective linkage for the more regular complex nanogrids such as nano-windows. Herein, we report the introduction of spirobifluorene, which has more orthogonal shapes, to fix the backbone of nanogridons with regards to the diarylfluorenes. The diamond-type nanogridons (DGs) obtained as a result have the potential feature of cross extension, which is different from their ladder-type counterparts, although they both have four well-defined extension sites. In order to screen efficient monogridon modules, we designed two types of DGs (spiro[fluorene-9,8'-indeno[2,1-b]thiophene] (SFIT)-based DGs-1 and spirobifluorene-based DGs-2) and compared their synthetic routes. The results show that the Friedel-Crafts (F-C) gridization of the A₁B₁ synthon (A₁B₁ mode) offers DGs-1 in 44-50% yields, while the F-C gridization of A₂ + B₂ synthons (A₂ + B₂ mode) is more efficient and gives DGs-2 in 64% yield. Furthermore, unlike in the A₁B₁ mode, the dehydroxylated byproduct and linear polymers were not observed in the A₂ + B₂ mode.

Metallocalix[4]arene Polymers for Gravimetric Detection of N-Nitrosodialkylamines

N-Nitrosamines are found in food, drugs, air, water, and soil. They pose a significant risk to human health because of their carcinogenicity; consequently, materials that can be used to selectively and sensitively detect nitrosamines are needed. In this work, we designed and synthesized two polymers bearing calix[4]arene or 4-tert-butylcalix[4]arene tungsten-imido complexes (PCalixH and PCalixtBu) as N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) receptors. The interaction between metallocalix[4]arene monomers/polymers and NDMA was confirmed by ¹H NMR and IR spectroscopy. Single-crystal X-ray analysis further revealed that the host-guest interaction is based on binding of the terminal oxygen of NDMA to tungsten within the calixarene cavity. Gravimetric detection of NDMA was performed on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) in air. Both polymers show responses to NDMA, with PCalixtBu exhibiting a low theoretical limit of detection of 5 ppb for NDMA. The sensor also shows high selectivity toward NDMA and moderate humidity tolerance. This work provides a sensitive sensor for detection of NDMA and also offers a class of new, selective, and efficient NDMA receptors for the future design of NDMA sensors and NDMA extraction materials.
