Extraordinarily Large Electrocaloric Strength of Metal-Free Perovskites

Metal-Free Perovskite Ferroelectrics with the Most Equivalent Polarization Axes

Ferroelectricity in metal-free perovskites (MFPs) has emerged as an academic hotspot for their lightweight, eco-friendly processability, flexibility, and degradability, with considerable progress including large spontaneous polarization, high Curie temperature, large piezoelectric response, and tailoring coercive field. However, their equivalent polarization axes as a key indicator are far from enough, although multiaxial ferroelectrics are highly preferred for performance output and application flexibility that profit from as many equivalent polarization directions as possible with easier reorientation. Here, by implementing the synergistic overlap of regulating anionic geometries (from spherical I- to octahedral [PF6]- and to tetrahedral [ClO4]- or [BF4]-) and cationic asymmetric modification, we successfully designed multiaxial MFP ferroelectrics CMDABCO-NH4-X3 (CMDABCO = N-chloromethyl-N'-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium; X = [ClO4]- or [BF4]-) with the lowest P1 symmetry. More impressively, systemic characterizations indicate that they possess 24 equivalent polarization axes (Aizu notations of 432F1 and m3̅mF1, respectively)─the maximum number achievable for ferroelectrics. Benefiting from the multiaxial feature, CMDABCO-NH4-[ClO4]3 has been demonstrated to have excellent piezoelectric sensing performance in its polycrystalline sample and prepared composite device. Our study provides a feasible strategy for designing multiaxial MFP ferroelectrics and highlights their great promise for use in microelectromechanical, sensing, and body-compatible devices.

The past 10 years of molecular ferroelectrics: structures, design, and properties

Ferroelectricity, which has diverse important applications such as memory elements, capacitors, and sensors, was first discovered in a molecular compound, Rochelle salt, in 1920 by Valasek. Owing to their superiorities of lightweight, biocompatibility, structural tunability, mechanical flexibility, etc., the past decade has witnessed the renaissance of molecular ferroelectrics as promising complementary materials to commercial inorganic ferroelectrics. Thus, on the 100th anniversary of ferroelectricity, it is an opportune time to look into the future, specifically into how to push the boundaries of material design in molecular ferroelectric systems and finally overcome the hurdles to their commercialization. Herein, we present a comprehensive and accessible review of the appealing development of molecular ferroelectrics over the past 10 years, with an emphasis on their structural diversity, chemical design, exceptional properties, and potential applications. We believe that it will inspire intense, combined research efforts to enrich the family of high-performance molecular ferroelectrics and attract widespread interest from physicists and chemists to better understand the structure-function relationships governing improved applied functional device engineering.

Molecularly thin, two-dimensional all-organic perovskites

Recently, the emergence of all-organic perovskites with three-dimensional (3D) structures has expanded the potential applications of perovskite materials. However, the synthesis and utilization of all-organic perovskites in 2D form remain largely unexplored because the design principle has not been developed. We present the successful synthesis of a metal-free 2D layered perovskite, denoted as the Choi-Loh van der Waals phase (CL-v phase), with the chemical formula A2B2X4, where A represents a larger-sized cation compared to B and X denotes an anion. The CL-v phase exhibits a van der Waals gap enabled by interlayer hydrogen bonding and can be exfoliated or grown as molecularly thin 2D organic crystals. The dielectric constants of the CL-v phase range from 4.8 to 5.5 and we demonstrate their potential as gate dielectrics for thin-film transistors.

A Metal-Free Molecular Ferroelectric [4-Me-cyclohexylamine]ClO4 Introduced by Boat and Chair Conformations of Cyclohexylamine

Organic ferroelectrics have received a great deal of interest due to their exclusive properties. However, organic ferroelectrics have not been fully explored, which hinders their practical application. Here, we presented a novel metal-free organic molecular ferroelectric [4-MCHA][ClO4 ] (1) (4-MCHA=trans-4-methylcyclohexylamine), which exhibits an above-room-temperature of 328 K. Strikingly, the single crystal structure analysis of 1 shows that the driving force of phase transition is related to the interesting chair-boat conformation change of 4-MCHA cation, in addition to the order-disorder transition of ClO4 - anion. Using piezoelectric response force microscopy (PFM), the presence of domains and the implemented polarization switching were clearly observed, which explicitly determined the presence of room-temperature ferroelectricity of 1. As far as we know, the ferroelectric phase transition mechanism attributed to the conformational change in a trans isomeric cation is very rare. This research enriched the path of designing ferroelectric materials and smart materials.

Accelerated Discovery of Targeted Environmentally Friendly A(II)B(I)X3-Type Three-Dimensional Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskites for Potential Light Harvesting via Machine Learning

The engineered hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) with outstanding multifunctionalities have realized overarching targeted-driven applications and thus aroused intense research interest. The emergence of three-dimensional (3D) A(II)B(I)X3-type HOIPs in 2018 brought a breakthrough to extend the 3D perovskite family and successfully realized prominent ferroelectricity at the same time. Here, we focus on these new-type HOIPs to perform machine-learning (ML)-based molecular design to screen promising candidates for versatile light harvesting, involving photovoltaics (77 ones), water splitting (216 ones), and photodetection (178 ones), out of 3180 A(II)B(I)X3 perovskites in total. These candidates await future experimental synthesis and characterization. Our high-throughput ML-based screening of 3D A(II)B(I)X3 HOIPs would enrich the material inventory by successfully introducing a class of new 3D HOIPs to realize property-oriented light harvesting and additional versatile energy harvesting due to their potential multifunctionalities such as ferroelectricity and electrocaloricity.

Giant electrocaloric effect in a molecular ceramic

The electrocaloric effect (ECE) is an efficient and environmentally friendly method for solid-state refrigeration driven by an electric field. However, disregarding the ECE performance, the mass of materials also limits the amount of energy transferred in the cooling process. While molecular ECE materials have been attracting intensive attention with their excellent ECE properties, most reported molecular compounds can only be utilized in the form of thin films or single crystals. Unlike inorganic ceramics, molecular thin films and single crystals are very difficult to prepare in a large amount, which greatly restrains the future application of those materials. In this work, we report an excellent molecular ECE material in the form of polycrystalline molecular ceramics. Such molecular ceramics are composed of plastic molecular ferroelectrics, and can fulfil the requirement of large mass, easy processing, excellent performance and low energy consumption. Our molecular ceramic of HQReO₄ (HQ: protonated quinuclidine) demonstrates an isothermal entropy change of 5.8 J K^-1 kg^-1 and an adiabatic temperature change of 3.1 K. Notably, by a simple low-temperature pressing process without added adhesives (about 373 K), an HQReO₄ molecular ceramic block can be obtained, and its ECE performance is observed to be comparable to that of single crystals, for the first time. This work proposes a new application form for molecular electrocaloric materials, which opens up new ideas for solid-state refrigeration.

Large Piezoelectric Response in a Metal-Free Three-Dimensional Perovskite Ferroelectric

Metal-free perovskites with light weight and eco-friendly processability have received great interest in recent years due to their superior physical features in ferroelectrics, X-ray detection, and optoelectronics. The famous metal-free perovskite ferroelectric MDABCO-NH₄-I₃ (MDABCO = N-methyl-N'-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium) has been demonstrated to exhibit excellent ferroelectricity comparable to that of inorganic ceramic ferroelectric BaTiO₃, such as large spontaneous polarization and high Curie temperature (Ye et al. Science 2018, 361, 151). However, piezoelectricity as a vitally important index is far from enough in the metal-free perovskite family. Here, we report the discovery of large piezoelectric response in a new metal-free three-dimensional perovskite ferroelectric NDABCO-NH₄-Br₃ (NDABCO = N-amino-N'-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium) by replacing the methyl group of MDABCO with the amino group. Besides the evident ferroelectricity, strikingly, NDABCO-NH₄-Br₃ shows a large d₃₃ of 63 pC/N more than 4 times that of MDABCO-NH₄-I₃ (14 pC/N). The d₃₃ value is also strongly supported by the computational study. To the best of our knowledge, such a large d₃₃ value ranks the highest among the documented organic ferroelectric crystals to date and represents a major breakthrough in metal-free perovskite ferroelectrics. Combined with decent mechanical properties, NDABCO-NH₄-Br₃ is expected to be a competitive candidate for medical, biomechanical, wearable, and body-compatible ferroelectric devices.

Ferroelectric hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites and their structural and functional diversity

Molecular ferroelectrics have gradually aroused great interest in both fundamental scientific research and technological applications because of their easy processing, light weight and mechanical flexibility. Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite ferroelectrics (HOIPFs), as a class of molecule-based ferroelectrics, have diverse functionalities owing to their unique structure and have become a hot spot in molecular ferroelectrics research. Therefore, they are extremely attractive in the field of ferroelectrics. However, there seems to be a lack of systematic review of their design, performance and potential applications. Herein, we review the recent development of HOIPFs from lead-based, lead-free and metal-free perovskites, and outline the versatility of these ferroelectrics, including piezoelectricity for mechanical energy-harvesting and optoelectronic properties for photovoltaics and light detection. Furthermore, a perspective view of the challenges and future directions of HOIPFs is also highlighted.

Structural and Functional Insights into Metal-Free Perovskites

In the past three years, metal-free perovskites have garnered significant interest as promising candidates for utilization in next-generation wearable electronics. A variety of different molecular structures for these perovskites have been designed for different applications. However, there is still no systematic understanding that can elucidate the relationship between the structural details and properties of perovskites. This would provide a helpful guide for designing a metal-free perovskite with the desired packing structure and properties. Herein, we summarize recently reported structural and functional insights into metal-free perovskites. The underlying design of the molecular structure and its role in the packing structure and resulting properties are explained. In addition, important factors and challenges in the design of a molecular structure that will be useful for future applications are discussed. This information will help enrich the library of potential structures and future applications of metal-free perovskites, which is believed to be much larger than is currently known.

Photoelectrocaloric effect in ferroelectric oxide

The enhanced electrocaloric (EC) effect in solid-state-based lead-free ferroelectric Ba_0.875(Bi_0.5Li_0.5)_0.125TiO₃ system is investigated under light as an external stimulus. The sample exhibits an analogous value of maximum change in entropy at Curie temperature, extracted from the two different measurements process. Notably, the sample depicts maximum value of adiabatic change in temperature (ΔT) as 1.27 K and isothermal entropy change (ΔS) as 2.05 J/K kg along with the EC coefficient value of 0.426 K mm/kV, under dark conditions. In addition, the sample exhibits > 0.5 K adiabatic temperature change over a broad temperature range (~ 35 K). Remarkably, the EC parameters display ~ 27% enhancement upon 405 nm light illumination. The demonstrated photoelectrocaloric effect is found to be in accordance with theoretical formalism. The present work elucidates the light as an additional degree of freedom to widen the potential of solid-state-based technologies for advanced environment-friendly cooling devices.

Tailoring the coercive field in ferroelectric metal-free perovskites by hydrogen bonding

The miniaturization of ferroelectric devices in non-volatile memories requires the device to maintain stable switching behavior as the thickness scales down to nanometer scale, which requires the coercive field to be sufficiently large. Recently discovered metal-free perovskites exhibit advantages such as structural tunability and solution-processability, but they are disadvantaged by a lower coercive field compared to inorganic perovskites. Herein, we demonstrate that the coercive field (110 kV/cm) in metal-free ferroelectric perovskite MDABCO-NH4-(PF6)3 (MDABCO = N-methyl-N'-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium) is one order larger than MDABCO-NH4-I3 (12 kV/cm) owing to the stronger intermolecular hydrogen bonding in the former. Using isotope experiments, the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition temperature and coercive field are verified to be strongly influenced by hydrogen bonds. Our work highlights that the coercive field of organic ferroelectrics can be tailored by tuning the strength of hydrogen bonding.

An organic plastic ferroelectric with high Curie point

Plastic ferroelectrics, featuring large entropy changes in phase transitions, hold great potential application for solid-state refrigeration due to the electrocaloric effect. Although conventional ceramic ferroelectrics (e.g., BaTiO3 and KNbO3) have been widely investigated in the fields of electrocaloric material and catalysis, organic plastic ferroelectrics with a high Curie point (T c) are rarely reported but are of great importance for the sake of environmental protection. Here, we reported an organic plastic ferroelectric, (-)-camphanic acid, which crystallizes in the P21 space group, chiral polar 2 (C2) point group, at room temperature. It undergoes plastic paraelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition with the Aizu notation of 23F2 and high T c of 414 K, showing large entropy gain (ΔS t = 48.2 J K-1 mol-1). More importantly, the rectangular polarization-electric field (P-E) hysteresis loop was recorded on the thin film samples with a large saturated polarization (P s) of 5.2 μC cm-2. The plastic phase transition is responsible for its multiaxial ferroelectric feature. This work highlights the discovery of organic multiaxial ferroelectrics driven by the motive of combining chirality and plastic phase transition, which will extensively promote the practical application of such unique functional materials.

An unprecedented azobenzene-based organic single-component ferroelectric

The first azobenzene-based organic single-component ferroelectric 2-amino-2′,4,4′,6,6′-pentafluoroazobenzene was designed, which shows an exceptionally high Curie temperature (Tc) of 443 K.

Giant room temperature electrocaloric effect in a layered hybrid perovskite ferroelectric: [(CH3)2CHCH2NH3]2PbCl4

Electrocaloric effect driven by electric fields displays great potential in realizing highly efficient solid-state refrigeration. Nevertheless, most known electrocaloric materials exhibit relatively poor cooling performance near room temperature, which hinders their further applications. The emerging family of hybrid perovskite ferroelectrics, which exhibits superior structural diversity, large heat exchange and broad property tenability, offers an ideal platform. Herein, we report an exceptionally large electrocaloric effect near room temperature in a designed hybrid perovskite ferroelectric [(CH₃)₂CHCH₂NH₃]₂PbCl₄, which exhibits a sharp first-order phase transition at 302 K, superior spontaneous polarization (>4.8 μC/cm²) and relatively small coercive field (<15 kV/cm). Strikingly, a large isothermal entropy change ΔS of 25.64 J/kg/K and adiabatic temperature change ΔT of 11.06 K under a small electric field ΔE of 29.7 kV/cm at room temperature are achieved, with giant electrocaloric strengths of isothermal ΔS/ΔE of 0.86 J·cm/kg/K/kV and adiabatic ΔT/ΔE of 370 mK·cm/kV, which is larger than those of traditional ferroelectrics. This work presents a general approach to the design of hybrid perovskite ferroelectrics, as well as provides a family of candidate materials with potentially prominent electrocaloric performance for room temperature solid-state refrigeration.

Electrocaloric Performance of Multilayer Ceramic Chips: Effect of Geometric Structure Induced Internal Stress

Driven by an ever-growing demand for environmentally benign cooling systems, the past decade has witnessed the booming development in the field of electrocaloric (EC) cooling technology, which is considered as a promising solid-state cooling approach. Multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs) represent the optimum structure for EC cooling elements because of large breakdown strengths, low driving voltages, and high macroscopic volumes of active EC materials. However, fundamental relationships between the geometric parameters of MLCCs and the EC coefficient are less understood. In this study, 0.92Pb(Mg_1/3Nb_2/3)O₃-0.08PbTiO₃ (PMN-PT) MLCCs with controlled configurations, such as active/inactive layer thickness, number of layers, and active volume ratio, were fabricated, and their EC performance was evaluated. The electric properties of the MLCCs are confirmed to be closely related to the geometric structure, which influences not only the heat flow but also the internal stress, resulting in the variability of EC performance and reliability/breakdown strength. The internal stress arises due to the residual thermal stress originating from the densification-related shrinkage, thermal expansion mismatch during the sintering, and clamping stress arising from the inactive area due to the large strain from the active area under a high electric field. The geometric structure-based stress distribution and the magnitude of stress on the active layers in MLCCs were determined by finite element modeling (FEM) and correlated with the experimental EC coefficients. The results reveal that a low inactive volume percentage is beneficial toward increasing the breakdown field and enhancement of EC performance because of reduced clamping stress on active EC material.

PFM (piezoresponse force microscopy)-aided design for molecular ferroelectrics

With prosperity, decay, and another spring, molecular ferroelectrics have passed a hundred years since Valasek first discovered ferroelectricity in the molecular compound Rochelle salt. Recently, the proposal of ferroelectrochemistry has injected new vigor into this century-old research field. It should be highlighted that piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) technique, as a non-destructive imaging and manipulation method for ferroelectric domains at the nanoscale, can significantly speed up the design rate of molecular ferroelectrics as well as enhance the ferroelectric and piezoelectric performances relying on domain engineering. Herein, we provide a brief review of the contribution of the PFM technique toward assisting the design and performance optimization of molecular ferroelectrics. Relying on the relationship between ferroelectric domains and crystallography, together with other physical characteristics such as domain switching and piezoelectricity, we believe that the PFM technique can be effectively applied to assist the design of high-performance molecular ferroelectrics equipped with multifunctionality, and thereby facilitate their practical utilization in optics, electronics, magnetics, thermotics, and mechanics among others.

Improper molecular ferroelectrics with simultaneous ultrahigh pyroelectricity and figures of merit

Although ferroelectric materials exhibit large pyroelectric coefficients, their pyroelectric figures of merit (FOMs) are severely limited by their high dielectric constants because of the inverse relationship between FOMs and dielectric constant. Here, we report the molecular ferroelectric [Hdabco]ClO4 and [Hdabco]BF4 (dabco = diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) exhibiting improper ferroelectric behavior and pyroelectric FOMs outperforming the current ferroelectrics. Concurrently, the improper molecular ferroelectrics have pyroelectric coefficients that are more than one order of magnitude greater than the state-of-the-art pyroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 Our first-principles and thermodynamic calculations show that the strong coupling between the order parameters, i.e., the rotation angle of anions and polarization, is responsible for the colossal pyroelectric coefficient of the molecular ferroelectrics. Along with the facile preparation and self-poling features, the improper molecular ferroelectrics hold great promise for high-performance pyroelectric devices.

Electrocaloric Cooling: A Review of the Thermodynamic Cycles, Materials, Models, and Devices

Electrocaloric is a novel emerging not-in-kind cooling technology based on solid-state materials exhibiting the electrocaloric effect, i.e., the property of changing their temperature because of an adiabatic change in the intensity of the electric field applied. This technology has only attracted the interests of the scientific community in the last two decades, even though it has the main feature of being based on eco-friendly materials that, because of their solid-state nature, do not provide a direct contribution in global warming. Even if some steps have already been taken, the research fields connected to electrocaloric cooling are still open: The identification of the most appropriated thermodynamic cycle, electrocaloric refrigerants, as well as the development of efficient cooling systems. To this purpose, this review paper provides a snapshot of the electrocaloric world and compares the progress made by the inherent scientific community in all the connected fields: the thermodynamic cycles, materials, experimental devices, numerical models, energy performances and prospective cooling applications.
