Optically Transparent Multiscale Composite Films for Flexible and Wearable Electronics

Cellulose-derived raw materials towards advanced functional transparent papers

Pulp and paper are gradually transforming from a traditional industry into a new green strategic industry. In parallel, cellulose-derived transparent paper is gaining ground for the development of advanced functional materials for light management with eco-friendly, high performance, and multifunctionality. This review focuses on methods and processes for the preparation of cellulose-derived transparent papers, highlighting the characterization of raw materials linked to responses to different properties, such as optical and mechanical properties. The applications in electronic devices, energy conversion and storage, and eco-friendly packaging are also highlighted with the objective to showcase the untapped potential of cellulose-derived transparent paper, challenging the prevailing notion that paper is merely a daily life product. Finally, the challenges and propose future directions for the development of cellulose-derived transparent paper are identified.

MnO2 Nanoparticles Decorated PEDOT:PSS for High Performance Stretchable and Transparent Supercapacitors

With the swift advancement of wearable electronics and artificial intelligence, the integration of electronic devices with the human body has advanced significantly, leading to enhanced real-time health monitoring and remote disease diagnosis. Despite progress in developing stretchable materials with skin-like mechanical properties, there remains a need for materials that also exhibit high optical transparency. Supercapacitors, as promising energy storage devices, offer advantages such as portability, long cycle life, and rapid charge/discharge rates, but achieving high capacity, stretchability, and transparency simultaneously remains challenging. This study combines the stretchable, transparent polymer PEDOT:PSS with MnO2 nanoparticles to develop high-performance, stretchable, and transparent supercapacitors. PEDOT:PSS films were deposited on a PDMS substrate using a spin-coating method, followed by electrochemical deposition of MnO2 nanoparticles. This method ensured that the nanosized MnO2 particles were uniformly distributed, maintaining the transparency and stretchability of PEDOT:PSS. The resulting PEDOT:PSS/MnO2 nanoparticle electrodes were gathered into a symmetric device using a LiCl/PVA gel electrolyte, achieving an areal capacitance of 1.14 mF cm-2 at 71.2% transparency and maintaining 89.92% capacitance after 5000 cycles of 20% strain. This work presents a scalable and economical technique to manufacturing supercapacitors that combine high capacity, transparency, and mechanical stretchability, suggesting potential applications in wearable electronics.

Transparent radiative cooling cover window for flexible and foldable electronic displays

Transparent radiative cooling holds the promise to efficiently manage thermal conditions in various electronic devices without additional energy consumption. Radiative cooling cover windows designed for foldable and flexible displays could enhance cooling capacities in the ubiquitous deployment of flexible electronics in outdoor environments. However, previous demonstrations have not met the optical, mechanical, and moisture-impermeable criteria for such cover windows. Herein, we report transparent radiative cooling metamaterials with a thickness of 50 microns as a cover window of foldable and flexible displays by rational design and synthesis of embedding optically-modulating microstructures in clear polyimide. The resulting outcome not only includes excellent light emission in the atmospheric window under the secured optical transparency but also provides enhanced mechanical and moisture-impermeable properties to surpass the demands of target applications. Our metamaterials not only substantially mitigate the temperature rise in heat-generating devices exposed to solar irradiance but also enhance the thermal management of devices in dark conditions. The light output performance of light-emitting diodes in displays on which the metamaterials are deployed is greatly enhanced by suppressing the performance deterioration associated with thermalization.

Simple and Efficient Synthesis of Ruthenium(III) PEDOT:PSS Complexes for High-Performance Stretchable and Transparent Supercapacitors

In the evolving landscape of portable electronics, there is a critical demand for components that meld stretchability with optical transparency, especially in supercapacitors. Traditional materials fall short in harmonizing conductivity, stretchability, transparency, and capacity. Although poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) stands out as an exemplary candidate, further performance enhancements are necessary to meet the demands of practical applications. This study presents an innovative and effective method for enhancing electrochemical properties by homogeneously incorporating Ru(III) into PEDOT:PSS. These Ru(III) PEDOT:PSS complexes are readily synthesized by dipping PEDOT:PSS films in RuCl3 solution for no longer than one minute, leveraging the high specific capacitance of Ru(III) while minimizing interference with transmittance. The supercapacitor made with this Ru(III) PEDOT:PSS complex demonstrated an areal capacitance of 1.62 mF cm-2 at a transmittance of 73.5%, which was 155% higher than that of the supercapacitor made with PEDOT:PSS under comparable transparency. Notably, the supercapacitor retained 87.8% of its initial capacitance even under 20% tensile strain across 20,000 cycles. This work presents a blueprint for developing stretchable and transparent supercapacitors, marking a significant stride toward next-generation wearable electronics.

Cryomilling-assisted high purity β-chitin extraction from Uroteuthis edulis pens

We report on the extraction of β-chitin from pens (or Gladius) of Uroteuthis edulis, a squid species prevalent in the Pacific coastal regions of East Asia. In particular, we employ cryogenic mechanical grinding (or cryomilling) as a pre-treatment process for the raw squid pens. We show that the cryomilling step enables an effective pulverization of the raw materials, which facilitates the removal of protein residues allowing the extraction of high-purity β-chitin with a high acetylation degree (∼97 %) and crystallinity (∼82 %). We also demonstrate that the Uroteuthis edulis extract β-chitin affords a free-standing film with excellent optical transmittance and mechanical properties.

Preparation and performance of alumina/epoxy-siloxane composites: A comparative study on thermal- and photo-curing process

Although epoxy-based composites that consist of inorganic fillers and matrixes are widely used in "conventional" electronic packaging applications due to their excellent insulation and robust properties, they limit their uses in "advanced electronic packaging" which requires enhanced thermal conductivity. However, conventional thermal curing methods for fabrication of epoxy-based composites do not fulfill sufficient thermal conductivity. Herein, we apply photo-induced curing strategy for fabricating alumina-incorporated epoxy-siloxane composites that consist of sol-gel derived siloxane matrix and bimodal sized alumina particles as a thermally conductive filler. We investigate how curing mechanism (thermal- or UV-curing) and varying the ratios of the alumina particles of two different sizes affect the various physical properties. It is found that photo-curing process makes greatly enhanced thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion, and high mechanical robustness compared to thermally-cured composites. As the results, we can achieve significantly enhanced thermal conductivity (>11 W/m K) with high thermal stability and mechanical robustness.

Fabrication of Soft Transparent Patient-Specific Vascular Models with Stereolithographic 3D printing and Thiol-Based Photopolymerizable Coatings

An ideal vascular phantom should be anatomically accurate, have mechanical properties as close as possible to the tissue, and be sufficiently transparent for ease of visualization. However, materials that enable the convergence of these characteristics have remained elusive. The fabrication of patient-specific vascular phantoms with high anatomical fidelity, optical transparency, and mechanical properties close to those of vascular tissue is reported. These final properties are achieved by 3D printing patient-specific vascular models with commercial elastomeric acrylic-based resins before coating them with thiol-based photopolymerizable resins. Ternary thiol-ene-acrylate chemistry is found optimal. A PETMP/allyl glycerol ether (AGE)/polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) coating with a 30/70% AGE/PEGDA ratio applied on a flexible resin yielded elastic modulus, UTS, and elongation of 3.41 MPa, 1.76 MPa, and 63.2%, respectively, in range with the human aortic wall. The PETMP/AGE/PEGDA coating doubled the optical transmission from 40% to 80%, approaching 88% of the benchmark silicone-based elastomer. Higher transparency correlates with a decrease in surface roughness from 2000 to 90 nm after coating. Coated 3D-printed anatomical replicas are showcased for pre-procedural planning and medical training with good radio-opacity and echogenicity. Thiol-click chemistry coatings, as a surface treatment for elastomeric stereolithographic 3D-printed objects, address inherent limitations of photopolymer-based additive manufacturing.

Flexible and Stretchable Light-Emitting Diodes and Photodetectors for Human-Centric Optoelectronics

Optoelectronic devices with unconventional form factors, such as flexible and stretchable light-emitting or photoresponsive devices, are core elements for the next-generation human-centric optoelectronics. For instance, these deformable devices can be utilized as closely fitted wearable sensors to acquire precise biosignals that are subsequently uploaded to the cloud for immediate examination and diagnosis, and also can be used for vision systems for human-interactive robotics. Their inception was propelled by breakthroughs in novel optoelectronic material technologies and device blueprinting methodologies, endowing flexibility and mechanical resilience to conventional rigid optoelectronic devices. This paper reviews the advancements in such soft optoelectronic device technologies, honing in on various materials, manufacturing techniques, and device design strategies. We will first highlight the general approaches for flexible and stretchable device fabrication, including the appropriate material selection for the substrate, electrodes, and insulation layers. We will then focus on the materials for flexible and stretchable light-emitting diodes, their device integration strategies, and representative application examples. Next, we will move on to the materials for flexible and stretchable photodetectors, highlighting the state-of-the-art materials and device fabrication methods, followed by their representative application examples. At the end, a brief summary will be given, and the potential challenges for further development of functional devices will be discussed as a conclusion.

Freestanding Crystalline β-Ga2O3 Flexible Membrane Obtained via Lattice Epitaxy Engineering for High-Performance Optoelectronic Device

Wearable and flexible β-Ga2O3-based semiconductor devices have attracted considerable attention, due to their outstanding performance and potential application in real-time optoelectronic monitoring and sensing. However, the unavailability of high-quality crystalline and flexible β-Ga2O3 membranes limits the fabrication of relevant devices. Here, through lattice epitaxy engineering together with the freestanding method, we demonstrate the preparation of a robust bending-resistant and crystalline β-Ga2O3 (-201) membrane. Based on this, we fabricate a flexible β-Ga2O3 photodetector device that shows comparable performance in photocurrent responsivity and spectral selectivity to conventional rigid β-Ga2O3 film-based devices. Moreover, based on the transferred β-Ga2O3 membrane on a silicon wafer, the PEDOT:PSS/β-Ga2O3 p-n heterojunction device with self-powered characteristic was constructed, further demonstrating its superior heterogeneous integration ability with other functional materials. Our results not only demonstrate the feasibility of obtaining a high-quality crystalline and flexible β-Ga2O3 membrane for an integrated device but also provide a pathway to realize flexible optical and electronic applications for other semiconducting materials.

Molecular Design of Multifunctional Integrated Polymer Semiconductors with Intrinsic Stretchability, High Mobility, and Intense Luminescence

Multifunctional semiconductors integrating unique optical, electrical, mechanical, and chemical characteristics are critical to advanced and emerging manufacturing technologies. However, due to the trade-off challenges in design principles, fabrication difficulty, defects in existing materials, etc., realizing multiple functions through multistage manufacturing is quite taxing. Here, an effective molecular design strategy is established to prepare a class of multifunctional integrated polymer semiconductors. The pyridal[1,2,3]triazole-thiophene co-structured tetrapolymers with full-backbone coplanarity and considerable inter/intramolecular noncovalent interactions facilitate short-range order and excellent (re)organization capability of polymer chains, providing stress-dissipation sites in the film state. The regioregular multicomponent conjugated backbones contribute to dense packing, excellent crystallinity, high crack onset strain over 100%, efficient carrier transport with mobilities exceeding 1 cm2  V-1  s-1 , and controllable near-infrared luminescence. Furthermore, a homologous blending strategy is proposed to further enhance the color-tunable luminescent properties of polymers while effectively retaining mechanical and electrical properties. The blended system exhibits excellent field-effect mobility (µ) and quantum yield (Φ), reaching a record Φ · µ of 0.43 cm2  V-1  s-1 . Overall, the proposed strategy facilitates a rational design of regioregular semicrystalline intrinsically stretchable polymers with high mobility and color-tunable intense luminescence, providing unique possibilities for the development of multifunctional integrated semiconductors in organic optoelectronics.

Interactive deformable electroluminescent devices enabled by an adaptable hydrogel system with optical/photothermal/mechanical tunability

Deformable electroluminescent devices (DELDs) with mechanical adaptability are promising for new applications in smart soft electronics. However, current DELDs still present some limitations, including having stimuli-insensitive electroluminescence (EL), untunable mechanical properties, and a lack of versatile stimuli response properties. Herein, a facile approach for fabricating in situ interactive and multi-stimuli responsive DELDs with optical/photothermal/mechanical tunability was proposed. A polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polydopamine (PDA)/graphene oxide (GO) adaptable hydrogel exhibiting optical/photothermal/mechanical tunability was used as the top ionic conductor (TIC). The TIC can transform from a viscoelastic state to an elastic state via a special freezing-salting out-rehydration (FSR) process. Meanwhile, it endows the DELDs with a photothermal response and thickness-dependent light shielding properties, allowing them to dynamically demonstrate "on" or "off" or "gradually change" EL response to various mechanical/photothermal stimuli. Thereafter, the DELDs with a viscoelastic TIC can be utilized as pressure-responsive EL devices and laser-engravable EL devices. The DELDs with an elastic TIC can withstand both linear and out-of-plane deformation, enabling the designs of various interactive EL devices/sensors to monitor linear sliders, human finger bending, and pneumatically controllable bulging. This work offers new opportunities for developing next-generation EL-responsive devices with widespread application based on adaptable hydrogel systems.

A Study on the 3D Deformation Behavior of Porous PDMS Flexible Electronic Composite Films Stretched under Different Temperatures

Flexible electronic films need to be applied in different ambient temperatures. The porous substrate of the composite film enhances air permeability. The lifespan of these composite films is significantly affected by variations in temperature and substrate porosity. To explore the impact of temperature and porosity on the performance of composite films, we developed a 3D deformation detection system utilizing the advanced three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC) method. This system enabled us to observe and analyze the 3D deformation behaviors of porous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) flexible composite films when they are subjected to uniaxial stretching at different temperatures. We proposed employing two parameters, namely the strain fluctuation coefficient (M) and off-plane displacement (w), to characterize the 3D deformation of the films. This holistic characterization of deformation through the combined utilization of parameters M and w held greater significance for composite films compared to the conventional practice of solely measuring mechanical properties like the elastic modulus. Through experimental analysis, we discovered that as the temperature increased, the M value of the film decreased while the w value increased for the same stretching distance. Furthermore, the porosity of the composite film depended on the doping mass ratio of PDMS to deionized water during the fabrication process. Specifically, when the ratio was set at 6:1, the composite film exhibited the smallest M value and w value, and the highest air permeability. Additionally, the 3D deformation behavior remained stable across different temperatures for this specific ratio. Moreover, our findings unveiled a remarkable association between the parameter w and the resistance value of the device. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing the fabrication process of porous PDMS flexible electronic composite films.

Direct Optical Patterning of Quantum Dots: One Strategy, Different Chemical Processes

Patterning, stability, and dispersion of the semiconductor quantum dots (scQDs) are three issues strictly interconnected for successful device manufacturing. Recently, several authors adopted direct optical patterning (DOP) as a step forward in photolithography to position the scQDs in a selected area. However, the chemistry behind the stability, dispersion, and patterning has to be carefully integrated to obtain a functional commercial device. This review describes different chemical strategies suitable to stabilize the scQDs both at a single level and as an ensemble. Special attention is paid to those strategies compatible with direct optical patterning (DOP). With the same purpose, the scQDs' dispersion in a matrix was described in terms of the scQD surface ligands' interactions with the matrix itself. The chemical processes behind the DOP are illustrated and discussed for five different approaches, all together considering stability, dispersion, and the patterning itself of the scQDs.

Microfluidic-Based Continuous Fabrication of Ultrathin Hydrogel Films with Controllable Thickness

Ultrathin hydrogel films composed of cross-linked polymer networks swollen by water, with soft and moisturized features similar to biological tissue, play a vital role in flexible biosensors and wearable electronics. However, achieving efficient and continuous fabrication of such films remains a challenge. Here, we present a microfluidic-based strategy for the continuous fabrication of free-standing ultrathin hydrogel films by using laminar flow, which can be precisely controlled in the micrometer scale. Compared with conventional methods, the microfluidic-based method shows advantages in producing hydrogel films with a high homogeneity as well as maintaining the structural integrity, without the need of supporting substrates and sophisticated equipment. This strategy allows the precise control over the thickness of the hydrogel films ranging from 15 ± 0.2 to 39 ± 0.5 μm, by adjusting the height of the microfluidic channels, with predictable opportunities for scaling up. Therefore, our strategy provides a facile route to produce advanced thin polymer films in a universal, steerable, and scalable manner and will promote the applications of thin polymer films in biosensors and wearable electronics.

Flexible but Refractory Single-Crystalline Hyperbolic Metamaterials

The fabrication of flexible single-crystalline plasmonic or photonic components in a scalable way is fundamentally important to flexible electronic and photonic devices with high speed, high energy efficiency, and high reliability. However, it remains a challenge. Here, we have successfully synthesized flexible single-crystalline optical hyperbolic metamaterials by directly depositing refractory nitride superlattices on flexible fluorophlogopite-mica substrates with magnetron sputtering. Interestingly, these flexible hyperbolic metamaterials show dual-band hyperbolic dispersion of dielectric constants with small dielectric losses and high figures of merit in the visible to near-infrared ranges. More importantly, the optical properties of these nitride-based flexible hyperbolic metamaterials show remarkable stability during 1000 °C heating or after being bent 1000 times. Therefore, the strategy developed in this work offers an easy and scalable route for fabricating flexible, high-performance, and refractory plasmonic or photonic components, which can significantly expand the applications of current electronic and photonic devices.

Wrinkled Interfaces: Taking Advantage of Anisotropic Wrinkling to Periodically Pattern Polymer Surfaces

Periodically patterned surfaces can cause special surface properties and are employed as functional building blocks in many devices, yet remaining challenges in fabrication. Advancements in fabricating structured polymer surfaces for obtaining periodic patterns are accomplished by adopting "top-down" strategies based on self-assembly or physico-chemical growth of atoms, molecules, or particles or "bottom-up" strategies ranging from traditional micromolding (embossing) or micro/nanoimprinting to novel laser-induced periodic surface structure, soft lithography, or direct laser interference patterning among others. Thus, technological advances directly promote higher resolution capabilities. Contrasted with the above techniques requiring highly sophisticated tools, surface instabilities taking advantage of the intrinsic properties of polymers induce surface wrinkling in order to fabricate periodically oriented wrinkled patterns. Such abundant and elaborate patterns are obtained as a result of self-organizing processes that are rather difficult if not impossible to fabricate through conventional patterning techniques. Focusing on oriented wrinkles, this review thoroughly describes the formation mechanisms and fabrication approaches for oriented wrinkles, as well as their fine-tuning in the wavelength, amplitude, and orientation control. Finally, the major applications in which oriented wrinkled interfaces are already in use or may be prospective in the near future are overviewed.

Progress in Polymer-Ceramic Hybrid Antifouling Coatings

Simultaneous realization of superior mechanical and antifouling properties is critical for a coating. The use of stereoscopic polysiloxanes in place of linear polysiloxanes to fabricate antifouling coatings can combine properties of organic and inorganic materials, i.e., they can exhibit both high hardness and wear resistance from inorganic components as well as the flexibility and tunability from organic components. This strategy is used to prepare hard yet flexible antifouling coatings or polymer-ceramic hybrid antifouling coatings. In this mini-review, we report the recent advances in this field. Particularly, the effects of stereoscopic polysiloxane structures on their mechanical and antifouling properties are discussed in detail.

Intrinsically Stretchable Electroluminescent Elastomers with Self-Confinement Effect for Highly Efficient Non-Blended Stretchable OLEDs

Ultra-flexible stretchable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are emerging as a basic component of flexible electronics and human-machine interfaces. However, the brightness and efficiency of stretchable OLEDs remain still far inferior to their rigid counterparts, owing to the scarcity of satisfactory stretchable electroluminescent materials. Herein, we explore a general concept based on the self-confinement effect to dramatically improve the stretchability of elastomers, without affecting electroluminescent properties. The balanced rigid/flexible chain dynamics under self-confinement significantly reduces the modulus of the elastomers, resulting in the maximum strain reaching 806 %. Ultra-flexible stretchable OLEDs have been constructed based on the resulting ISEEs, achieving unprecedented high-performance non-blended stretchable OLEDs. The results suggest an effective molecular design strategy for highly deformable stretchable displays and flexible electronics.

Flexible and Transparent Ceramic Nanocomposite for Laboratory X-ray Imaging of Micrometer Resolution

Transparent nanocomposites have attracted considerable attention in many areas including X-ray imaging, wearable electronics, and volumetric display. However, both the transparency and the flexibility were largely jeopardized by the loading content of functional nanoparticles (NPs), posing a major challenge to material engineering. Herein, an ultra-high-loading-ceramic nanocomposite film was fabricated by a blade-coating technique. The film exhibited a high transparency over ∼89% in the whole visible region even with a fluoride-ceramic content up to ∼83 wt %. Based on a real-time investigation on the formation process of the film, the refractive-index difference between the nanoparticles and matrix was identified as the dominating factor to transparency. The transmittance spectra based on Rayleigh scattering theory were simulated to screen both nanoparticle radius and loading content, leading to the discovery of a transparency zone for film making. As a proof-of-concept experiment, the transparent film was used as an X-ray scintillation screen, which exhibited a comparable light yield to that of LYSO owing to the mitigated self-absorption effect. The homemade imager demonstrated a spatial resolution of 122 lp/mm, representing a record resolution of 4.1 μm for laboratory X-ray photography. Our work not only provided an experimental procedure to make high-loading functional films but also demonstrated a theoretical model to guide the search for gradients of transparent composites.

Progress in Data Acquisition of Wearable Sensors

Wearable sensors have demonstrated wide applications from medical treatment, health monitoring to real-time tracking, human-machine interface, smart home, and motion capture because of the capability of in situ and online monitoring. Data acquisition is extremely important for wearable sensors, including modules of probes, signal conditioning, and analog-to-digital conversion. However, signal conditioning, analog-to-digital conversion, and data transmission have received less attention than probes, especially flexible sensing materials, in research on wearable sensors. Here, as a supplement, this paper systematically reviews the recent progress of characteristics, applications, and optimizations of transistor amplifiers and typical filters in signal conditioning, and mainstream analog-to-digital conversion strategies. Moreover, possible research directions on the data acquisition of wearable sensors are discussed at the end of the paper.

Electrical Signal Initiates Kinetic Assembly of Collagen to Construct Optically Transparent and Geometry Customized Artificial Cornea Substitutes

Corneal transplantation is an effective treatment for reconstructing injured corneas but is very limited due to insufficient donors, which has led to a growing demand for development of artificial corneal substitutes (ACSs). Collagen is a potential building block for ACS fabrication, whereas technically there are limited capabilities to control the collagen assembly for creating highly transparent collagen ACSs. Here, we report an electro-assembly technique to kinetically control collagen assembly on the nanoscale that allows the yielding collagen ACSs with structure determined superior optics. Structurally, the kinetically electro-assembled collagen (KEA-Col) is composed of partially aligned microfibrils (∼10 nm in diameter) with compacted lamellar organization. Optical analysis reveals that such microstructure is directly responsible for its optimal light transmittance by reducing light scattering. Moreover, this method allows the creation of complex three-dimensional geometries and thus is convenient to customize collagen ACSs with specific curvatures to meet refractive power requirements. Available properties (e.g., optics and mechanics) of cross-linked KEA-Cols were studied to meet the clinical requirement as ACSs, and in vitro tests further proved their beneficial characteristics of cell growth and migration. An in vivo study established a rabbit lamellar keratectomy corneal wound model and demonstrated the customized collagen ACSs can adapt to the defective cornea and support epithelial healing as well as stroma integration and reconstruction with lower immunoreaction compared with commercial xenografts, which suggests its promising application prospects. More broadly, this work illustrates the potential for enlisting electrical signals to mediate collagen's assembly and microstructure organization for specific structural functionalization for regenerative medicine.

Novel Biphasically and Reversibly Transparent Phase Change Material to Solve the Thermal Issues in Transparent Electronics

Highly integrated transparent electronic systems are experiencing significant thermal bottlenecks due to the rapid growth of transparent electronics and the lack of suitable transparent thermal management solutions. Therefore, transparent thermal management materials are highly desirable in modern transparent electronics. Based on the phase change properties of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and the encapsulable properties of epoxy resin (EP), we synthesize a biphasically and reversibly transparent PEG/EP composite for thermal energy storage (TPE-TES). Energy-driven structural rearrangements in cross-linked networks are responsible for the high transparency with practical thickness. According to SEM and TEM investigations, PEG and EP achieve submicron phase dispersion, while TPE-TES forms a smooth and continuous surface that suppresses diffuse reflections and contributes to improved visible light penetration. The unique combination of phase change and optical transparency gives TPE-TES the ability to regulate thermal storage, rapid temperature change, and spatial temperature uniformity of transparent electronics. Due to its flexibility, stability, and processability, TPE-TES is also suitable and ideal as thin surface coating films or thick transparent flexible substrates for a wide range of applications in the integration of electronic devices.

High-Performance Bioelectronic Circuits Integrated on Biodegradable and Compostable Substrates with Fully Printed Mask-Less Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) rely on volumetric ion-modulation of the electronic current to provide low-voltage operation, large signal amplification, enhanced sensing capabilities, and seamless integration with biology. The majority of current OECT technologies require multistep photolithographic microfabrication methods on glass or plastic substrates, which do not provide an ideal path toward ultralow cost ubiquitous and sustainable electronics and bioelectronics. At the same time, the development of advanced bioelectronic circuits combining bio-detection, amplification, and local processing functionalities urgently demand for OECT technology platforms with a monolithic integration of high-performance iontronic circuits and sensors. Here, fully printed mask-less OECTs fabricated on thin-film biodegradable and compostable substrates are proposed. The dispensing and capillary printing methods are used for depositing both high- and low-viscosity OECT materials. Fully printed OECT unipolar inverter circuits with a gain normalized to the supply voltage as high as 136.6 V^-1 , and current-driven sensors for ion detection and real-time monitoring with a sensitivity of up to 506 mV dec^-1 , are integrated on biodegradable and compostable substrates. These universal building blocks with the top-performance ever reported demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and can open opportunities for next-generation high-performance sustainable bioelectronics.

Siloxane Hybrid Material-Encapsulated Highly Robust Flexible μLEDs for Biocompatible Lighting Applications

Flexible micro-light-emitting diodes (f-μLEDs) have been regarded as an attractive light source for the next-generation human-machine interfaces, thanks to their noticeable optoelectronic performances. However, when it comes to their practical utilizations fulfilling industrial standards, there have been unsolved reliability and durability issues of the f-μLEDs, despite previous developments in the high-performance f-μLEDs for various applications. Herein, highly robust flexible μLEDs (f-HμLEDs) with 20 × 20 arrays, which are realized by a siloxane-based organic-inorganic hybrid material (SHM), are reported. The f-HμLEDs are created by combining the f-μLED fabrication process with SHM synthesis procedures (i.e., sol-gel reaction and successive photocuring). The outstanding mechanical, thermal, and environmental stabilities of our f-HμLEDs are confirmed by a host of experimental and theoretical examinations, including a bending fatigue test (10⁵ bending/unbending cycles), a lifetime accelerated stress test (85 °C and 85% relative humidity), and finite element method simulations. Eventually, to demonstrate the potential of our f-HμLEDs for practical applications of flexible displays and/or biomedical devices, their white light emission due to quantum dot-based color conversion of blue light emitted by GaN-based f-HμLEDs is demonstrated, and the biocompatibility of our f-HμLEDs is confirmed via cytotoxicity and cell proliferation tests with muscle, bone, and neuron cell lines. As far as we can tell, this work is the first demonstration of the flexible μLED encapsulation platform based on the SHM, which proved its mechanical, thermal, and environmental stabilities and biocompatibility, enabling us to envisage biomedical and/or flexible display applications using our f-HμLEDs.

Disk-shaped cellulose fibers from red algae, Eucheuma cottonii and its use for high oxygen barrier

We could prepare disk-shaped fibers without particular mechanical treatments from Eucheuma cottonii, the commonly used red algae for obtaining carrageenan. After carrageenan extraction from cottonii, the residues were bleached using chlorine dioxide and hydrogen peroxide. The morphology of the bleached fiber was disk-shaped one with a very thin fiber wall thickness of less than 100 nm and a diameter of approximately 100 μm. The sugar analysis and X-ray diffraction of the bleached fibers showed that they consisted of mostly glucose and had the same pattern as cellulose I with more than 50% crystalline structure, respectively. Compared to one-dimensional cellulose micro- or nanofibrils, which exhibits slow drainage and possess intolerably high drying energy, these two-dimensional disk-shaped fibers, when formed a layer in water medium, exhibit fast drainage and low drying energy. The formed sheet resulted in excellent transparency and high oxygen barrier property. Therefore, by using these disk-shaped, thin fibers from cottonii, we expect that the biodegradable and transparent oxygen barrier layer can be produced at a paper machine, which is, if possible, extremely difficult in the case of cellulose micro- or nanofibrils due to their slow drainage and high drying energy.

Highly efficient and selective modification of lignin towards optically designable and multifunctional lignocellulose nanopaper for green light-management applications

Transparent lignocellulose nanopaper (LNP) has been demonstrated to be a promising candidate light-management material for next-generation optical engineering applications. Similar to its role in plant cell walls, lignin serves as a vital functional component in LNP matrices. However, its intrinsic light absorption property renders LNP undesirable for a range of optical management systems. Here, a highly efficient, controllable and ecofriendly lignin modification strategy is developed for modulating the optical performance of LNPs by taking advantage of the beneficial synergistic effect of H₂O₂ and UV light in selectively eliminating lignin chromophores. The obtained lignin-modified LNP features not only a high visible light transmittance (89%) but also a high haze (90%) and excellent UV-shielding capacity, owing to the well-preserved lignin aromatic skeleton structures after lignin modification. Furthermore, patterning is easily achieved on hot-pressing-induced densified LNPs through a selective lignin modification approach, which endows LNPs with intriguing optical designability. Benefitting from the multifunctionality of lignin components for nanopaper matrices, patterned LNPs demonstrate outstanding water and thermal stability, barrier properties, durability and biodegradability, which are of great significance for practical applications. Furthermore, we demonstrate the great applicability of this optically designable and multifunctional LNP as a light-management material for energy efficient buildings by highlighting its attractive sun- and indoor- light managing effects, effective thermal insulation, as well as superior durability for long-term use. In combination with its efficient, ecofriendly and controllable production, this novel high-performing LNP holds great potential in many other applications that require light-management structural materials, such as optoelectronic and sensing devices.

Highly Foldable, Super-Sensitive, and Transparent Nanocellulose/Ceramic/Polymer Cover Windows for Flexible OLED Displays

Polymer cover windows are important components of flexible OLED displays but they easily generate wrinkles because of their weak folding resistance. Increasing the polymer thickness can improve the folding resistance but it decreases the touch sensitivity. Thus, fabricating highly foldable and supersensitive polymer cover windows is still challenging. Here, by incorporating cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and zirconia (ZrO₂) into colorless polyimide (CPI), we developed a highly foldable and supersensitive hybrid cover window. Inspired by the theory of elasticity, we added rigid CNCs into CPI to improve the elastic modulus and hence the foldability. ZrO₂ was introduced to improve dielectric properties, which leads to improved touch sensitivity. After these modifications, the elastic modulus of the cover windows was increased from 1432 to 2221 MPa, whereas its dielectric constant was increased from 2.95 to 3.46 (@1 × 10⁶ Hz), resulting in significantly enhanced foldability and sensitivity. Meanwhile, because of the nano size of CNCs and ZrO₂, the hybrid cover windows exhibit excellent optical properties with the transmittance of ∼88.1%@550 nm and haze of 2.39%. With improved and balanced mechanical, dielectric, and optical properties, these hybrid cover windows overcome current cover windows' defects and could be widely used in next-generation flexible displays.

Graphene Flake Self-Assembly Enhancement via Stretchable Platforms and External Mechanical Stimuli

While the green production and application of 2D functional nanomaterials, such as graphene flakes, in films for stretchable and wearable technologies is a promising platform for advanced technologies, there are still challenges involved in the processing of the deposited material to improve properties such as electrical conductivity. In applications such as wearable biomedical and flexible energy devices, the widely used flexible and stretchable substrate materials are incompatible with high-temperature processing traditionally employed to improve the electrical properties, which necessitates alternative manufacturing approaches and new steps for enhancing the film functionality. We hypothesize that a mechanical stimulus, in the form of substrate straining, may provide such a low-energy approach for modifying deposited film properties through increased flake packing and reorientation. To this end, graphene flakes were exfoliated using an unexplored combination of ethanol and cellulose acetate butyrate for morphological and percolative electrical characterization prior to application on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates as a flexible and stretchable electrically conductive platform. The deposited percolative free-standing films on PDMS were characterized via in situ resistance strain monitoring and surface morphology measurements over numerous strain cycles, with parameters extracted describing the dynamic modulation of the film's electrical properties. A reduction in the film resistance and strain gauge factor was found to correlate with the surface roughness and densification of a sample's (sub)surface and the applied strain. High surface roughness samples exhibited enhanced reduction in resistance as well as increased sensitivity to strain compared to samples with low surface roughness, corresponding to surface smoothing, which is related to the dynamic settling of graphene flakes on the substrate surface. This procedure of incorporating strain as a mechanical stimulus may find application as a manufacturing tool/step for the routine fabrication of stretchable and wearable devices, as a low energy and compatible approach, for enhancing the properties of such devices for either high sensitivity or low sensitivity of electrical resistance to substrate strain.

Full-Textile Human Motion Detection Systems Integrated by Facile Weaving with Hierarchical Core-Shell Piezoresistive Yarns

The tremendous progress of the wearable intelligent system has brought an urgent demand for flexible pressure sensors, especially for those possessing high sensing performances, simple manufacture technology, and efficient integration. In this work, hierarchical core-shell piezoresistive yarns (HCPYs), which contain internal silver-plated nylon electrodes and surface microporous structured carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) sensing layer, are designed and manufactured via facile wet-spinning accompanied by a water vapor coagulating bath. The obtained HCPY can either be inserted into traditional textiles to assemble a single-pressure sensor, or be woven into a textile-based flexible pressure sensors array with expected size and resolution, without compromising their comfort, breathability, and three-dimensional (3D) conformability. Simultaneously, to further enhance the sensing performance, the surface microporous structures of HCPYs are optimized by altering the treatment humidity and exposure time during the process of water vapor-induced phase separation. The wearable pressure sensors assembled by the optimal HCPY achieved a high sensitivity up to 84.5 N-1, a good durability over 5000-cycle tests, a fast response time of 2.1 ms, and a recovery time of 2.4 ms. Moreover, the wearable pressure sensors have been successfully used to monitor physical signals and human motions. The textile-based flexible pressure sensors array has also been seamlessly integrated with sportswear to detect movements of the elbow joint and map spatial pressure distribution, which makes HCPY a promising candidate for constructing next-generation wearable electronics.

Highly flexible Ag nanowire network covered by a graphene oxide nanosheet for high-performance flexible electronics and anti-bacterial applications

We investigated a flexible and transparent conductive electrode (FTCE) based on Ag nanowires (AgNWs) and a graphene oxide (GO) nanosheet and fabricated through a simple and cost-effective spray coating method. The AgNWs/GO hybrid FTCE was optimized by adjusting the nozzle-to-substrate distance, spray speed, compressor pressure, and volume of the GO solution. The optimal AgNWs/GO hybrid FTCE has a high transmittance of 88% at a wavelength of 550 nm and a low sheet resistance of 20 Ohm/square. We demonstrate the presence of the GO nanosheet on the AgNWs through Raman spectroscopy. Using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, we confirmed that the nanosheet acted as a conducting bridge between AgNWs and improved the surface morphology and roughness of the electrode. Effective coverage by the GO sheet improved the conductivity of the AgNWs electrode Effective coverage of the GO sheet improved conductivity of the AgNWs electrode with minimum degradation of optical and mechanical properties. Flexible thin film heater (TFH) and electroluminescent (EL) devices fabricated on AgNWs/GO hybrid FTCEs showed better performance than devices on bare AgNWs electrodes due to lower sheet resistance and uniform conductivity. In addition, an AgNWs/GO electrode layer on a facial mask acts as a self-heating and antibacterial coating. A facial mask with an AgNWs/GO electrode showed a bacteriostatic reduction rate of 99.7 against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumonia.

Azobenzene-containing liquid crystalline composites for robust ultraviolet detectors based on conversion of illuminance-mechanical stress-electric signals

Wearable ultraviolet (UV) detectors have attracted considerable interest in the military and civilian realms. However, semiconductor-based UV detectors are easily interfered by elongation due to the elastic modulus incompatibility between rigid semiconductors and polymer matrix. Polymer detectors containing UV responsive moieties seriously suffer from slow response time. Herein, a UV illuminance-mechanical stress-electric signal conversion has been proposed based on well-defined ionic liquid (IL)-containing liquid crystalline polymer (ILCP) and highly elastic polyurethane (TPU) composite fabrics, to achieve a robust UV monitoring and shielding device with a fast response time of 5 s. Due to the electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds between ILs and LC networks, the ILCP-based device can effectively prevent the exudation of ILs and maintain stable performance upon stretching, bending, washing and 1000 testing cycles upon 365 nm UV irradiation. This work provides a generalizable approach toward the development of full polymer-based wearable electronics and soft robots.

Recent Developments in Flexible Transparent Electrode

With the rapid development of flexible electronic devices (especially flexible LCD/OLED), flexible transparent electrodes (FTEs) with high light transmittance, high electrical conductivity, and excellent stretchability have attracted extensive attention from researchers and businesses. FTEs serve as an important part of display devices (touch screen and display), energy storage devices (solar cells and super capacitors), and wearable medical devices (electronic skin). In this paper, we review the recent progress in the field of FTEs, with special emphasis on metal materials, carbon-based materials, conductive polymers (CPs), and composite materials, which are good alternatives to the traditional commercial transparent electrode (i.e., indium tin oxide, ITO). With respect to production methods, this article provides a detailed discussion on the performance differences and practical applications of different materials. Furthermore, major challenges and future developments of FTEs are also discussed.

Stretchable Electronics Based on PDMS Substrates

Stretchable electronics, which can retain their functions under stretching, have attracted great interest in recent decades. Elastic substrates, which bear the applied strain and regulate the strain distribution in circuits, are indispensable components in stretchable electronics. Moreover, the self-healing property of the substrate is a premise to endow stretchable electronics with the same characteristics, so the device may recover from failure resulting from large and frequent deformations. Therefore, the properties of the elastic substrate are crucial to the overall performance of stretchable devices. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) is widely used as the substrate material for stretchable electronics, not only because of its advantages, which include stable chemical properties, good thermal stability, transparency, and biological compatibility, but also because of its capability of attaining designer functionalities via surface modification and bulk property tailoring. Herein, the strategies for fabricating stretchable electronics on PDMS substrates are summarized, and the influence of the physical and chemical properties of PDMS, including surface chemical status, physical modulus, geometric structures, and self-healing properties, on the performance of stretchable electronics is discussed. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities of stretchable electronics based on PDMS substrates are considered.

Synthesis and properties of colorless copolyimides derived from 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether-based diamines with different substituents

Tailored Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) Crystal Orientation for a Triboelectric Nanogenerator through Epitaxial Growth on a Chitin Nanofiber Film

Tailoring the crystal orientation of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) has attracted widespread interest because of its effects on the ferroelectric properties required for various electronic devices. In this study, we investigated the epitaxial growth of PVDF-TrFE on a chitin film for developing triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). The crystallographic match between the chitin and PVDF-TrFE enables the development of the intended crystal orientation, with the PVDF-TrFE polarization axis aligned perpendicular to the substrate. In addition, the epitaxially grown PVDF-TrFE on chitin not only enhances the performance of the TENG but also increases the stability of the hygroscopic chitin film against water. The corresponding TENG exhibits a significantly higher output current compared to that of a nonepitaxial PVDF-TrFE/chitin film. Furthermore, the triboelectric sensors based on epitaxial PVDF-TrFE/chitin films allow the monitoring of subtle pressures, suggesting that tailoring the crystal orientation of PVDF-TrFE is a promising approach for developing high-performance TENGs.
