Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Group 3 and 4 Metals

Mining for Metal-Organic Systems: Chemistry Frontiers of Th-, U-, and Zr-Materials

The conceptual framework presented in this Perspective overviews the design principles of innovative thorium-based materials that could address urgent needs of the medicinal, nuclear energy, and waste remediation sectors from the lens of zirconium and uranium analogs. We survey the intersections of Zr, Th, and U chemistry with a focus on how the intrinsic behavior of each metal translates to broader material properties, including, but not limited to, structural and topological diversity, preferential metal-ligand binding, and reactivity. On the example of several classes of materials, including organometallic complexes, polyoxometalates, and the primary focus of this Perspective, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the design principles that govern the preparation of Zr-, Th-, and U-compounds, including oxophilicity, variation in oxidation states, and stable coordination environments have been considered. Further, we highlight how the impact of the mentioned variables may shift throughout the progression from discrete molecular systems to extended structures. We discuss the common assumption that zirconium-organic materials are typically considered a close analog of thorium-based congeners in areas such as material design and preparation. Through consideration of fundamental chemistry principles, we shed light on the relationships between Zr-, Th-, and U-based materials and highlight how a critical analysis of their distinct properties can be used to target a desired material performance. As a result, we provide a detailed understanding of Th-based materials chemistry by anchoring their fundamental properties between two well-studied reference points, zirconium- and uranium-containing analogs.

Ionic Liquid Modified Fe-Porphyrinic Metal-Organic Frameworks as Efficient and Selective Photocatalysts for CO2 Reduction

Porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal platforms for heterogeneous photocatalysts toward CO2 reduction. To further explore photocatalytic MOF systems, it is also necessary to consider their ability to fine-tune the microenvironments of the active sites, which affects their overall catalytic operation. Herein, a kind of ionic liquid (IL, here is 3-butyric acid-1-methyl imidazolium bromide, BAMeImBr) was anchored to iron-porphyrinic Zr-MOFs with different amounts to obtain ILx@MOF-526 (MOF-526 = Zr6O4(OH)4(FeTCBPP)3, FeTCBPP = iron 5,10,15,20-tetra[4-(4'-carboxyphenyl)phenyl]-porphyrin, x = 100, 200, and 400). ILx@MOF-526 series was designed to investigate the effects of the microenvironmental and electronic structural modification on the efficiency and selectivity of the photochemical reduction of CO2 after introducing IL fragments. Compared to parent MOF-526, the production and selectivity of CO were greatly improved in the absence of any photosensitizer under visible light by the ILx@MOF-526 series. Among them, the CO yield of IL200@MOF-526 was up to 14.0 mmol g-1 within 72 h with a remarkable CO selectivity of 97%, which is superior to that of MOF-526 without BAMeIm+ modification and other amounts of BAMeIm+ loaded. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations were performed to study the mechanism of the CO2 reduction.

Friends or Foes: Fundamental Principles of Th-Organic Scaffold Chemistry Using Zr-Analogs as a Guide

The fundamental interest in actinide chemistry, particularly for the development of thorium-based materials, is experiencing a renaissance owing to the recent and rapidly growing attention to fuel cycle reactors, radiological daughters for nuclear medicine, and efficient nuclear stockpile development. Herein, we uncover fundamental principles of thorium chemistry on the example of Th-based extended structures such as metal-organic frameworks in comparison with the discrete systems and zirconium extended analogs, demonstrating remarkable over two-and-half-year chemical stability of Th-based frameworks as a function of metal node connectivity, amount of defects, and conformational linker rigidity through comprehensive spectroscopic and crystallographic analysis as well as theoretical modeling. Despite exceptional chemical stability, we report the first example of studies focusing on the reactivity of the most chemically stable Th-based frameworks in comparison with the discrete Th-based systems such as metal-organic complexes and a cage, contrasting multicycle recyclability and selectivity (>97%) of the extended structures in comparison with the molecular compounds. Overall, the presented work not only establishes the conceptual foundation for evaluating the capabilities of Th-based materials but also represents a milestone for their multifaceted future and foreshadows their potential to shape the next era of actinide chemistry.

Heterometallic MIL-125(Ti-Al) frameworks for electrochemical determination of ascorbic acid, dopamine and uric acid

The detection of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA) is not only of great significance in the areas of biomedicine and neurochemistry but also helpful in disease diagnosis and pathology research. Due to their diverse structures, designability, and large specific surface areas, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently caught considerable attention in the electrochemical field. Herein, a family of heterometallic MOFs with amino modification, MIL-125(Ti-Al)-xNH2 (x = 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%), were synthesized and employed as electrochemical sensors for the detection of AA, DA, and UA. Among them, MIL-125(Ti-Al)-75%NH2 exhibited the most promising electrochemical behavior with 40% doping of carbon black in 0.1 M PBS (pH = 7.10), which displayed individual detection performance with wide linear detection ranges (1.0-6.5 mM for AA, 5-100 μM for DA and 5-120 μM for UA) and low limits of detection (0.215 mM for AA, 0.086 μM for DA, and 0.876 μM for UA, S/N = 3). Furthermore, the as-prepared MIL-125(Ti-Al)-75%NH2/GCE provided a promising platform for future application in real sample analysis, owing to its excellent anti-interference performance and good stability.

Eu3+-Doped Anionic Zinc-Based Organic Framework Ratio Fluorescence Sensing Platform: Supersensitive Visual Identification of Prescription Drugs

Advanced techniques for both environmental and biological prescription drug monitoring are of ongoing interest. In this work, a fluorescent sensor based on an Eu3+-doped anionic zinc-based metal-organic framework (Eu3+@Zn-MOF) was constructed for rapid visual analysis of the prescription drug molecule demecycline (DEM), achieving both high sensitivity and selectivity. The ligand 2-amino-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (bpdc-NH2) not only provides stable cyan fluorescence (467 nm) for the framework through intramolecular charge transfer of bpdc-NH2 infinitesimal disturbanced by Zn2+ but also chelates Eu3+, resulting in red (617 nm) fluorescence. Through the synergy of photoinduced electron transfer and the antenna effect, a bidirectional response to DEM is achieved, enabling concentration quantification. The Eu3+@Zn-MOF platform exhibits a wide linear range (0.25-2.5 μM) to DEM and a detection limit (LOD) of 10.9 nM. Further, we integrated the DEM sensing platform into a paper-based system and utilized a smartphone for the visual detection of DEM in water samples and milk products, demonstrating the potential for large-scale, low-cost utilization of the technology.

Non-Fullerene Acceptors Assisted Target Therapy for Interface Treatment Enable High Performance Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Targeted treatment of the interface between electron transport layers (ETL) and perovskite layers is highly desirable for achieving passivating effects and suppressing carrier nonradiative recombination, leading to high performance and long-term stability in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this study, a series of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs, Y-H, Y-F, and Y-Cl) are introduced to optimize the properties of the perovskite/ETL interface. This optimization involves passivating Pb2+ defects, releasing stress, and modulating carrier dynamics through interactions with the perovskite. Remarkably, after modifying with NFAs, the absorption range of perovskite films into the near-infrared region is extended. As expected, Y-F, with the largest electrostatic potential, facilitates the strongest interaction between the perovskite and its functional groups. Consequently, champion power conversion efficiencies of 21.17%, 22.21%, 23.25%, and 22.31% are achieved for control, Y-H-, Y-F-, and Y-Cl-based FA0.88 Cs0.12 PbI2.64 Br0.36 (FACs) devices, respectively. This treatment also enhances the heat stability and air stability of the corresponding devices. Additionally, these modifier layers are applied to enhance the efficiency of Cs0.05 (FA0.95 MA0.05 )0.95 PbI2.64 Br0.36 (FAMA) devices. Notably, a champion PCE exceeding 24% is achieved in the Y-F-based FAMA device. Therefore, this study provides a facile and effective approach to target the interface, thereby improving the efficiency and stability of PSCs.

Characterization, Structure, and Reactivity of Hydroxyl Groups on Metal-Oxide Cluster Nodes of Metal-Organic Frameworks: Structural Diversity and Keys to Reactivity and Catalysis

Among the most stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are those incorporating nodes that are metal oxide clusters with frames such as Zr6 O8 . This review is a summary of the structure, bonding, and reactivity of MOF node hydroxyl groups, emphasizing those bonded to nodes containing aluminum and zirconium ions. Hydroxyl groups are often present on these nodes, sometimes balancing the charges of the metal ions. They arise during MOF syntheses in aqueous media or in post-synthesis treatments. They are identified with infrared and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies and characterized by their reactivities with polar compounds such as alcohols. Terminal OH, paired µ2 -OH, and aqua groups on nodes are catalytic sites in numerous reactions. Relatively unreactive hydroxyl groups (such as isolated µ2 -OH groups) may replace reactive groups and inhibit catalysis; some node hydroxyl groups (e.g., µ3 -OH) are mere spectators in catalysis. There are similarities between MOF node hydroxyl groups and those on the surfaces of bulk metal oxides, zeolites, and enzymes, but the comparisons are mostly inexact, and much remains to be understood about MOF node hydroxyl group chemistry. It is posited that understanding and controlling this chemistry will lead to tailored MOFs and improved adsorbents and catalysts.

Efficient Exciton Dissociation on Ceria Chelated Cerium-Based MOF Isogenous S-Scheme Photocatalyst for Acetaldehyde Purification

Long-term exposure to low concentration indoor VOCs of acetaldehyde (CH3 CHO) is harmful to human health. Thus, a novel isogenous heterojunction CeO2 /Ce-MOF photocatalyst is synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method for the effective elimination of CH3 CHO in this work. This CeO2 /Ce-MOF photocatalyst performs well in CH3 CHO removal and achieves an apparent quantum efficiency of 7.15% at 420 nm, which presents ≈6.7 and 3.4 times superior to those generated by CeO2 and Ce-MOF, respectively. The enhanced efficiency is due to two main aspects including i) an effective photocarrier separation ability and the prolonged reaction lifetime of excitons play crucial roles and ii) the formation of an internal electric field (IEF) is sufficient to overcome the considerable exciton binding energy, and increases the exciton dissociation efficiency by up to 50.4%. Moreover, the reasonable pathways and mechanisms of CH3 CHO degradation are determined by in situ DRIFTS analysis and simulated DFT calculations. Those results demonstrated that S-scheme heterojunction successfully increases the efficiency of harmful volatile organic compounds elimination, and it offers essential guidance for designing rare earth-based MOF photocatalysts.

Acidic Properties of Known and New COOH-Functionalized M(IV) Metal-Organic Frameworks

Herein, we report two new COOH-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of composition [M6 O4 (OH)6 (PMA)2 (H2 PMA)]×H2 O, M=Zr, Hf), denoted CAU-61, synthesized by using pyromellitic acid (H4 PMA), a tetracarboxylic acid, as the linker and acetic acid as the solvent. The structure was determined from powder X-ray diffraction data and one-dimensional inorganic building units are connected through tetracarboxylate as well as dicarboxylate linker molecules, resulting in highly stable microporous framework structures with limiting and maximum pore diameter of ∼3.6 and ∼5.0 Å, respectively, lined with -COOH groups. Thermal stabilities of up to 400 °C in air, chemical stability in water at pH 1 to 12 and water uptake of 17 mol/mol prompted us to study the proton exchange of the μ2 -OH, μ3 -OH of the IBU and -COOH groups of the linker by titration with LiOH. Comparison of the pKa values with three UiO-66 derivatives confirms distinct pKa value ranges and trends for the different acidic protons. Furthermore, the preparation of Zr-CAU-61 membranes and first results on permeation of dyes and ions in aqueous solutions are presented.

Systematic Study on Zirconium Chelidamates: From a Molecular Complex to a M-HOF and a MOF

We report the synthesis and in-depth characterization of three zirconium chelidamates, a molecular complex (H₈C₂N)₂[Zr(HL)₃] (1), a porous metal-containing hydrogen-bonded organic framework (M-HOF) [Zr(H₂O)₂(HL)₂]·xH₂O (2), and a metal-organic framework (MOF) (H₈C₂N)_2-2n[Zr(H_nL)₂]·x solvent (0 ≤ n ≤ 1) (3) using chelidamic acid (H₃L, H₅C₇NO₅, 4-hydroxypyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid) as the ligand (H₈C₂N⁺ = dimethylammonium). High-throughput investigations of the system Zr⁴⁺/H₃L/HCl/DMF/H₂O were carried out, which resulted in highly crystalline compounds. The crystal structures of 1 and 2 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal three-dimensional (3D) electron diffraction and Rietveld refinements of powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data had to be used to elucidate the crystal structure of 3 since only very small single crystals of about 500 nm in diameter could be obtained. In all structures, chelidamate ions act as anionic palindromic pincer ligands, and in 3, a coordinative bond is additionally formed by the aryloxy group. While dense packing of the molecular complexes is found in 1, hydrogen bonding of the molecular complexes in 2 leads to a porous network that shows flexibility depending on the water content. The three-dimensional framework structure of the Zr-MOF 3 contains a mononuclear inorganic building unit (IBU), which is very uncommon in Zr-MOF chemistry. The three compounds are stable in several organic solvents, and thermal decomposition starts above 280 °C. While the hydrogen-bonded framework 2 is only porous toward water with a water uptake of almost 3.75 mol mol^-1 at p/p₀ = 0.9, 3 is porous against N₂, CO₂, methanol, ethanol, and water with a specific Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of a_S,BET = 410 m² g^-1 derived from the N₂ adsorption isotherm. Stability upon water adsorption covering 10 cycles between 0.5% < p/p₀ < 90% for 3 is also demonstrated.

Ortho Effects of Tricarboxylate Linkers in Regulating Topologies of Rare-Earth Metal-Organic Frameworks

A linker design strategy is developed to attain novel polynuclear rare-earth (RE) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with unprecedented topologies. We uncover the critical role of ortho-functionalized tricarboxylate ligands in directing the construction of highly connected RE MOFs. The acidity and conformation of the tricarboxylate linkers were altered by substituting with diverse functional groups at the ortho position of the carboxyl groups. For instance, the acidity difference between carboxylate moieties resulted in forming three hexanuclear RE MOFs with novel (3,3,3,10,10)-c wxl, (3,12)-c gmx, and (3,3,3,12)-c joe topologies, respectively. In addition, when a bulky methyl group was introduced, the incompatibility between the net topology and ligand conformation guided the co-appearance of hexanuclear and tetranuclear clusters, generating a novel 3-periodic MOF with a (3,3,8,10)-c kyw net. Interestingly, a fluoro-functionalized linker prompted the formation of two unusual trinuclear clusters and produced a MOF with a fascinating (3,8,10)-c lfg topology, which could be gradually replaced by a more stable tetranuclear MOF with a new (3,12)-c lee topology with extended reaction time. This work enriches the polynuclear clusters library of RE MOFs and unveils new opportunities to construct MOFs with unprecedented structural complexity and vast application potential.

Bioinspired Framework Catalysts: From Enzyme Immobilization to Biomimetic Catalysis

Enzymatic catalysis has fueled considerable interest from chemists due to its high efficiency and selectivity. However, the structural complexity and vulnerability hamper the application potentials of enzymes. Driven by the practical demand for chemical conversion, there is a long-sought quest for bioinspired catalysts reproducing and even surpassing the functions of natural enzymes. As nanoporous materials with high surface areas and crystallinity, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an exquisite case of how natural enzymes and their active sites are integrated into porous solids, affording bioinspired heterogeneous catalysts with superior stability and customizable structures. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the advances of bioinspired MOFs for catalysis, discuss the design principle of various MOF-based catalysts, such as MOF-enzyme composites and MOFs embedded with active sites, and explore the utility of these catalysts in different reactions. The advantages of MOFs as enzyme mimetics are also highlighted, including confinement, templating effects, and functionality, in comparison with homogeneous supramolecular catalysts. A perspective is provided to discuss potential solutions addressing current challenges in MOF catalysis.

Enhanced proton conductivity by guest molecule exchange in an acylamide-functionalized metal-organic framework

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as types of proton conductive materials have attracted much attention. Here, an acylamide-functionalized 3D MOF, [Ni₃(TPBTC)₂(stp)₂(H₂O)₄]·2DMA·32H₂O, has been successfully constructed via combining Ni(NO₃)₂, TPBTC (TPBTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid tris-pyridin-4-ylamide) and 2-H₂stp (2-H₂stp = 2-sulfoterephthalic acid monosodium salt) under solvothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that there are uncoordinated guest DMA molecules in the pores of the compound. On removal of guest DMA molecules, the proton conductivity of the compound increased to 2.25 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 at 80 °C and 98% RH which is about 110 times that of the original material. It is hoped that this work can provide essential insight for designing and obtaining improved crystalline-state proton conducting materials by considering the influences of guest molecules on proton conduction properties of porous materials.

Zr- and Ti-based metal-organic frameworks: synthesis, structures and catalytic applications

Recently, Zr- and Ti-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gathered increasing interest in the field of chemistry and materials science, not only for their ordered porous structure, large surface area, and high thermal and chemical stability, but also for their various potential applications. Particularly, the unique features of Zr- and Ti-based MOFs enable them to be a highly versatile platform for catalysis. Although much effort has been devoted to developing Zr- and Ti-based MOF materials, they still suffer from difficulties in targeted synthesis, especially for Ti-based MOFs. In this Feature Article, we discuss the evolution of Zr- and Ti-based MOFs, giving a brief overview of their synthesis and structures. Furthermore, the catalytic uses of Zr- and Ti-based MOF materials in the previous 3-5 years have been highlighted. Finally, perspectives on the Zr- and Ti-based MOF materials are also proposed. This work provides in-depth insight into the advances in Zr- and Ti-based MOFs and boosts their catalytic applications.

Upconversion Luminescence through Cooperative and Energy-Transfer Mechanisms in Yb3+ -Metal-Organic Frameworks

Lanthanide-doped metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) have versatile luminescence properties, however it is challenging to achieve lanthanide-based upconversion luminescence in these materials. Here, 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) and trivalent Yb³⁺ ions were used to generate crystalline Yb-BTC MOF 1D-microrods with upconversion luminescence under near infrared excitation via cooperative luminescence. Subsequently, the Yb-BTC MOFs were doped with a variety of different lanthanides to evaluate the potential for Yb³⁺ -based upconversion and energy transfer. Yb-BTC MOFs doped with Er³⁺ , Ho³⁺ , Tb³⁺ , and Eu³⁺ ions exhibit both the cooperative luminescence from Yb³⁺ and the characteristic emission bands of these ions under 980 nm irradiation. In contrast, only the 497 nm upconversion emission band from Yb³⁺ is observed in the MOFs doped with Tm³⁺ , Pr³⁺ , Sm³⁺ , and Dy³⁺ . The effects of different dopants on the efficiency of cooperative luminescence were established and will provide guidance for the exploitation of Ln-MOFs exhibiting upconversion.

Fatty acid capped, metal oxo clusters as the smallest conceivable nanocrystal prototypes

Metal oxo clusters of the type M₆O₄(OH)₄(OOCR)₁₂ (M = Zr or Hf) are valuable building blocks for materials science. Here, we synthesize a series of zirconium and hafnium oxo clusters with ligands that are typically used to stabilize oxide nanocrystals (fatty acids with long and/or branched chains). The fatty acid capped oxo clusters have a high solubility but do not crystallize, precluding traditional purification and single-crystal XRD analysis. We thus develop alternative purification strategies and we use X-ray total scattering and Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis as our main method to elucidate the structure of the cluster core. We identify the correct structure from a series of possible clusters (Zr3, Zr4, Zr6, Zr12, Zr10, and Zr26). Excellent refinements are only obtained when the ligands are part of the structure model. Further evidence for the cluster composition is provided by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), and mass spectrometry (MS). We find that hydrogen bonded carboxylic acid is an intrinsic part of the oxo cluster. Using our analytical tools, we elucidate the conversion from a Zr6 monomer to a Zr12 dimer (and vice versa), induced by carboxylate ligand exchange. Finally, we compare the catalytic performance of Zr12-oleate clusters with oleate capped, 5.5 nm zirconium oxide nanocrystals in the esterification of oleic acid with ethanol. The oxo clusters present a five times higher reaction rate, due to their higher surface area. Since the oxo clusters are the lower limit of downscaling oxide nanocrystals, we present them as appealing catalytic materials, and as atomically precise model systems. In addition, the lessons learned regarding PDF analysis are applicable to other areas of cluster science as well, from semiconductor and metal clusters, to polyoxometalates.

Novel lanthanide nanoparticle frameworks for highly efficient photoluminescence and hypersensitive detection

Despite the excellent luminescent properties of lanthanide clusters (LnCs), their suprastructures that inherit their characteristic luminescent properties are scarcely reported. Herein, novel and highly luminescent suprastructures are synthesized via a two-step assembly method to incorporate LnCs in covalent organic frameworks (COFs). COFs are pre-synthesized and decorated with rigid anchoring groups on their nanochannel walls, which provide one-dimensional confined spaces for the subsequent in situ assembly of luminescent LnCs. The confined LnCs are termed nanoparticles (NPs) to distinguish them from the pure LnCs. Secondary micropores with predictable sizes are successfully formed between the walls of the nanochannels and the orderly aligned NPs therein. By using a small organic ligand that can efficiently sensitize Ln(iii) cations in the assembly processes, the obtained composites show high quantum yields above 20%. The fluorescence can even be effectively maintained across nine pH units. The secondary micropores further enable the unambiguous discrimination of six methinehalides and ultrasensitive detection of uranyl ions. This study provides a new type of luminescent material that has potential for sensing and light emitting.

Dual-Color 2D Lead-Organic Framework with Two-Fold Interlocking Structures for the Detection of Nitrofuran Antibiotics and 2,6-Dichloro-4-nitroaniline

The misuse of organic pollutants such as nitrofuran antibiotics (NFAs) and 2,6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline (DCN) has become a hot topic of global concern, and developing rapid, efficient, and accurate techniques for detecting NFAs and pesticides in water is a major challenge. Here, we designed a novel lead-based anion 2D metal-organic framework (MOF){[(CH₃)₂NH₂]₂[Pb(TCBPE)(H₂O)₂]}_n (F3) with interlocking structures, in which TCBPE stands for 1,1,2,2-tetra(4-carboxylbiphenyl)ethylene. Powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis revealed that F3 has excellent chemical and solvent stability. It is worth noting that F3 has a grinding discoloration effect. The solvent-protected grinding approach achieved F3B with a high quantum yield (QY = 73.77%) and blue fluorescence, while the direct grinding method produced F3Y with a high quantum yield (QY = 37.27%) and yellow-green fluorescence. Importantly, F3B can detect NFAs in water rapidly and sensitively while remaining unaffected by other antibiotics. F3Y can identify DCN in water quickly and selectively while remaining unchanged by other pesticides. F3B demonstrated high selectivity and rapid response to NFAs at a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.26 μM, while F3Y indicated high selectivity and responded quickly to DCN in water at an LOD as low as 0.14 μM. The method was successfully applied to detect NFAs in actual water samples of the fish tanks and ponds as well as the pesticide DCN in soil samples. The recovery rates were 97.0-105.15% and 102.2-106.48%, and the relative standard deviations were 0.63-1.45% and 0.29-1.69%, respectively. In addition, F3B and F3Y can be made into fluorescent test papers for the visual detection of NFAs and DCN, respectively. Combined with experiments and density functional theory calculations, the mechanism of fluorescence quenching of MOFs by target analytes was also revealed.

Zr4+-terephthalate MOFs with 6-connected structures, highly efficient As(III/V) sorption and superhydrophobic properties

The use of terephthalate ligands with C_nH_2n+1NH-chains (n ≥ 6) led to the isolation of the first examples of Zr⁴⁺-terephthalate MOFs with 6-connected frameworks. The material with hexyl-amino functional groups has been proved to be an exceptional sorbent for the removal of As(III/V) toxic species from aqueous media, whereas MOFs with heptyl to dodecyl-amino moieties are superhydrophobic with promising oil-water separation properties.

Subnanometric Cu clusters on atomically Fe-doped MoO2 for furfural upgrading to aviation biofuels

Single cluster catalysts (SCCs) are considered as versatile boosters in heterogeneous catalysis due to their modifiable single cluster sites and supports. In this work, we report subnanometric Cu clusters dispersed on Fe-doped MoO₂ support for biomass-derived furfural upgrading. Systematical characterizations suggest uniform Cu clusters (composing four Cu atoms in average) are homogeneously immobilized on the atomically Fe-doped ultrafine MoO₂ nanocrystals (Cu₄/Fe_0.3Mo_0.7O₂@C). The atomic doping of Fe into MoO₂ leads to significantly modified electronic structure and consequently charge redistribution inside the supported Cu clusters. The as-prepared Cu₄/Fe_0.3Mo_0.7O₂@C shows superior catalytic performance in the oxidative coupling of furfural with C₃~C₁₀ primary/secondary alcohols to produce C₈~C₁₅ aldehydes/ketones (aviation biofuel intermediates), outperforming the conventionally prepared counterparts. DFT calculations and control experiments are further carried out to interpret the structural and compositional merits of Cu₄/Fe_0.3Mo_0.7O₂@C in the oxidative coupling reaction, and elucidate the reaction pathway and related intermediates.

Customized Synthesis: Solvent- and Acid-Assisted Topology Evolution in Zirconium-Tetracarboxylate Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) demonstrate strong potential for various important applications due to their well tunable structures and compositions through metal and organic linker engineering. As an effective approach, topology evolution by controlling linker conformation has received considerable attention, where solvents and acids have crucial effects on structural formation. However, a systematic study of such effects remains under investigated. Herein, we carried out a methodical study on the topology evolution in Zr-MOFs directed by solvothermal conditions with various combinations of three common solvents and six different acids. As a result, three Zr-MOFs with different topologies, scu (HIAM-4007), scp (HIAM-4008), and csq (HIAM-4009), were obtained using the same Zr₆-cluster and tetratopic carboxylate linker, in which structure diversity shows significant influence on their corresponding photoluminescence quantum yields. Further experiments revealed that the acidity of acids and the basicity of solvents strongly influenced the linker conformation in the resultant MOFs, leading to the topology evolution. Such a solvent- and acid-assisted topology evolution represents a general approach that can be used with other tetratopic carboxylate linkers to realize structural diversity. The present work demonstrates an effective structure designing strategy by controlling synthetic conditions, which may prove to be powerful for customized synthesis of MOFs with specific structure and functionality.

A Multifunctional Porous Uranyl Phosphonate Framework for Cyclic Utilization: Salvages, Uranyl Leaking Prevention, and Fluorescent Sensing

The material for managing and monitoring waste made from the waste itself is an excellent example of cyclic utilization, which could reduce issues and be more sustainable. A three-dimensional porous uranyl phosphonate MOF (UPF-105) was synthesized via a hydrothermal method. UPF-105 is stable in aqueous solution with pH in the range of 1-11 and maintains crystallinity below 215 °C. The uncoordinated phosphonate groups in the channels act as functional anchors to selectively capture uranyl ions, with a maximum uranium adsorption capacity of 170.23 mg g^-1. The fluorescence of UPF-105 makes it a good candidate for a uranyl ion sensor in uranium-contaminated solutions with concentrations in the range of 5-90 ppm.

The Chemistry of Zirconium/Carboxylate Clustering Process: Acidic Conditions to Promote Carboxylate-Unsaturated Octahedral Hexamers and Pentanuclear Species

Clustering chemistry is a key point in the design and synthesis of the secondary building units that comprise metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on group IV metals. In this work, the first stages of the zirconium-carboxylate clustering process in alcohol/water mixtures are studied in detail using the monocarboxylic benzoic and hydroxybenzoic acids to avoid the polymerization. Mass spectroscopy measurements performed on the reactions revealed the presence of hexa- and pentanuclear species even at low pH values and also evidenced the acid-base nature and pH dependence of the transformation between both species. The control on the chemistry governing the equilibria between these species has allowed us to isolate six new compounds in the solid state. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that they are closely related to the well-known [Zr₆(O)₄(OH)₄(OOC)₁₂] secondary building unit found in many MOFs by removing carboxylic ligands in the case of the hexameric species ([Zr₆(O)₄(OH)₄(OOC)₈(H₂O)₈]⁴⁺) or by additionally removing one of the metal centers in the case of the pentameric entities ([Zr₅(O)₂(OH)₆(OOC)₄(H₂O)₁₁(alcohol)]⁶⁺). Going in detail, the unsaturated hexameric clusters exhibit different dispositions of their eight carboxylate ligands in such a way that the remaining four carboxylate-free positions are arranged according to a square planar or tetrahedral symmetry. It should be highlighted that the pentameric complexes imply an unprecedented core nuclearity in zirconium clusters and thus their isolation provides a novel building block for the design of metal-organic materials.

Mixed-Linker Strategy for the Construction of Metal-Organic Framework Combined with Dyes toward Alcohol Detection

Herein, a N-rich metal-organic framework (MOF) with four kinds of cages, Zn₄(ade)₂(TCA)₂(H₂O) (NENU-1000, Hade = adenine, H₃TCA = 4,4',4″-tricarboxytriphenylamine, NENU = Northeast Normal University), was prepared by the mixed-ligand strategy. Cationic dyes can be selectively absorbed by NENU-1000 at proper concentrations, but not neutral and anionic dyes, which perhaps can be assigned to the N-rich neutral framework of NENU-1000. When NENU-1000 was introduced to a relatively lower concentration of cationic dye solutions (e.g., rhodamine B or basic red 2), the colors of these systems faded quickly. Furthermore, the faded solutions can be used for the detection of methanol and other small alcohol molecules with either the naked eye or common UV-vis spectra. The effect of the length of carbon chain, the position of the -OH group, and the number of the hydroxyl group of the alcohols was explored for the color development rate. In addition, the performance of NENU-1000 in iodine sorption and release was also studied.

Amino Group Induced Structural Diversity and Near-Infrared Emission of Yttrium-Tetracarboxylate Frameworks

Near-infrared (NIR)-emitting materials have been extensively studied due to their important applications in biosensing and bioimaging. Luminescent metal–organic frameworks (LMOFs) are a new class of highly emissive materials with strong potential for utilization in biomedical related fields because of their nearly unlimited structural and compositional tunability. However, very little work has been reported on organic linker-based NIR-MOFs and their emission properties. In the present work, a series of yttrium-tetracarboxylate-based LMOFs (HIAM-390X) are prepared via judicious linker design to achieve NIR emission with diverse structures. The introduction of an amino group not only offers the remarkable emission bathochromic shift from 521 nm, 665 nm to 689 nm for the resultant MOFs, but also influences the linker conformations, leading to the topology evolution from (4,12)-c ftw, (4,8)-c scu, which is rarely reported in rare earth element-based MOFs, to an unprecedented topology hlx for HIAM-3901 (without an amino group), HIAM-3905 (with one amino group) and HIAM-3906 (with two amino groups). Among these MOFs, HIAM-3907 shows an emission maximum at ∼790 nm, with the emission tail close to 1000 nm. The NIR emission may be attributed to the combination of the strongly electron-donating amino group and the strongly electron-withdrawing acceptor naphtho[2,3-c][1,2,5]selenadiazole. This work sheds light on the rational design of organic linker-based LMOFs with controlled structures and NIR emission, and inspires future interest in biosensing and bioimaging related applications of NIR-MOFs.

Introduction of amino groups into linkers will not only induce a significant emission red-shift to near-infrared, but also increase structural diversity of resultant LMOFs, leading to structural change from ftw, scu to an unprecedented topology hlx.

Zirconium oxo clusters as discrete molecular catalysts for the direct amide bond formation

A discrete dodecanuclear Zr oxo cluster catalyzed the direct formation of amide bonds without the need of water scavenging or dry reactions conditions showcasing the potential of these molecular clusters to become a new class of efficient catalysts.

Effect of the Defect Modulator and Ligand Length of Metal-Organic Frameworks on Carbon Dioxide Photoreduction

The nature of defects and organic ligands can fine-tune the absorption energy (E_abs) of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which is crucial for photocatalytic reactions; however, the relevant studies are in their infancy. Herein, a series of typical MOFs of the UiO family (UiO-6x-NH₂, x = 8, 7, and 6) with ligands of varied lengths and amino-group-modified defects were synthesized and employed to explore their performance for photocatalytic CO₂ reduction. Sample UiO-66-NH₂-2ABA (2ABA = 3,5-diamino-benzoate) with the shortest dicarboxylate ligand and two amino-group-modified defects exhibits superior photocatalytic activity due to the lowest E_abs. The CO yield photocatalyzed by UiO-66-NH₂-2ABA is 17.5 μmol g^-1 h^-1, which is 2.4 times that of UiO-68-NH₂-BA (BA = benzoate) with the longest ligand and no amino group involved in the defects. Both the experiments and theoretical calculations show that shorter dicarboxylate ligands and more amino groups result in smaller E_abs, which is favorable for photocatalytic reactions. This study provides new insights into boosting the photocatalytic efficiency by modulating the defects and ligands in MOFs.

Fiber Surface/Interfacial Engineering on Wearable Electronics

Surface/interfacial engineering is an essential technique to explore the fiber materials properties and fulfil new functionalities. An extensive scope of current physical and chemical treating methods is reviewed here together with a variety of real-world applications. Moreover, a new surface/interface engineering approach is also introduced: self-assembly via π-π stacking, which has great potential for the surface modification of fiber materials due to its nondestructive working principle. A new fiber family member, metal-oxide framework (MOF) fiber shows promising candidacy for fiber based wearable electronics. The understanding of surface/interfacial engineering techniques on fiber materials is advanced here and it is expected to guide the rational design of future fiber based wearable electronics.

Constructing Cationic Metal-Organic Framework Materials Based on Pyrimidyl as a Functional Group for Perrhenate/Pertechnetate Sorption

Cationic metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are widely used in the anion separation field, but there are few reports of pyrimidyl ligands as building units. In this work, three new cationic MOFs based on pyrimidyl as functional group ligands were synthesized for the removal of radioactive pertechnetate from aqueous solution. The pyrimidyl ligands were designed by incorporating pyrimidyl units into the skeletons of benzene, triphenylamine, and tetraphenylethylene, respectively. Taking advantage of multiple coordination sites of pyrimidyl groups, three cationic MOFs (ZJU-X11, ZJU-X12, and ZJU-X13) with diverse structures were solvothermally synthesized using silver ion as the metal node. Scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive spectroscopy mapping demonstrated that these three cationic MOFs could capture ReO₄^- via anion exchange, but the sorption capabilities were distinctly different. With 95% removal toward ReO₄^-, ZJU-X11 showed the strongest anion-exchange competence among the three MOFs. According to the results of batch experiments, ZJU-X11 could achieve sorption equilibrium within 10 min, remove 518 mg of ReO₄^- per 1 g of ZJU-X11, remove most of ReO₄^- after four recycles, and maintain satisfactory selectivity in the presence of excess competing anions, which is one of the best MOF materials for removing ReO₄^-/TcO₄^- among the three cationic MOFs. This work indicates that the pyrimidyl group is a promising multiple site to build versatile cationic MOFs.

Aqueous Stability of Zirconium Clusters, Including the Zr(IV) Hexanuclear Hydrolysis Complex [Zr6O4(OH)4(H2O)24]12+, from Density Functional Theory

Framework materials constitute a broad family of solids that range from zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to coordination polymers. The synthesis of such network structures typically rely on precursor molecular building blocks. As an example, the UiO-66 MOF series is constructed of hexanuclear [Zr₆O₄(OH)₄(CO₂)₁₂] cluster nodes and linear carboxylate linkers. Unfortunately, these Zr MOF cluster nodes cannot currently be manufactured in a sustainable way, motivating a search for "green" alternative synthesis methods. Stabilizing the hexanuclear Zr(IV) cluster (i.e., the hexamer, {Zr₆¹²⁺}) without the use of organic ligation would enable the use of environmentally friendly solvents such as water. The Zr(IV) tetranuclear cluster (i.e., the tetramer, {Zr₄⁸⁺}) can be stabilized in solution with or without organic ligands, yet the hexamer has yet to be synthesized without supporting ligands. The reasons why certain zirconium clusters are favored in aqueous solution over others are not well understood. This study reports the relative thermodynamic instability of the hypothetical hexamer {Zr₆¹²⁺} compared to the ubiquitous {Zr₄⁸⁺} tetramer. Density functional theory calculations were performed to obtain the hydrolysis Gibbs free energy of these species and used to construct Zr Pourbaix diagrams that illustrate the effects of electrochemical potential, pH, and Zr(IV) concentration. It was found that the aqueous {Zr₆¹²⁺} hexamer is ∼17.8 kcal/mol less stable than the aqueous {Zr₄⁸⁺} tetramer at pH = 0, V = 0, and [Zr(IV)] = 1 M, which is an energy difference on the order of counterion interactions. Electronic structure analyses were used to explore trends in the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap, frontier molecular orbitals, and electrostatic potential distribution of these clusters. The evidence suggests that the aqueous {Zr₆¹²⁺} hexamer may be promoted with more strategic syntheses incorporating minimal ligands and counterions.

Structure, Luminescent Sensing and Proton Conduction of a Boiling-Water-Stable Zn(II) Metal-Organic Framework

A novel Zn(II) metal-organic framework [Zn₄O(C₃₀H₁₂F₄O₄S₈)₃]_n, namely ZnBPD-4F4TS, has been constructed from a fluoro- and thiophenethio-functionalized ligand 2,2',5,5'-tetrafluoro-3,3',6,6'-tetrakis(2-thiophenethio)-4,4'-biphenyl dicarboxylic acid (H₂BPD-4F4TS). ZnBPD-4F4TS shows a broad green emission around 520 nm in solid state luminescence, with a Commission International De L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinate at x = 0.264, y = 0.403. Since d¹⁰-configured Zn(II) is electrochemically inert, its photoluminescence is likely ascribed to ligand-based luminescence which originates from the well-conjugated system of phenyl and thiophenethio moieties. Its luminescent intensities diminish to different extents when exposed to various metal ions, indicating its potential as an optical sensor for detecting metal ion species. Furthermore, ZnBPD-4F4TS and its NH₄Br-loaded composite, NH₄Br@ZnBPD-4F4TS, were used for proton conduction measurements in different relative humidity (RH) levels and temperatures. Original ZnBPD-4F4TS shows a low proton conductivity of 9.47 × 10^-10 S cm^-1 while NH₄Br@ZnBPD-4F4TS shows a more than 25,000-fold enhanced value of 2.38 × 10^-5 S cm^-1 at 40 °C and 90% RH. Both of the proton transport processes in ZnBPD-4F4TS and NH₄Br@ZnBPD-4F4TS belong to the Grotthuss mechanism with E_a = 0.40 and 0.32 eV, respectively.

Alkyl decorated metal-organic frameworks for selective trapping of ethane from ethylene above ambient pressures

The trapping of paraffins is beneficial compared to selective olefin adsorption for adsorptive olefin purification from a process engineering point of view. Here we demonstrate the use of a series of Zn2(X-bdc)2(dabco) (where X-bdc2- is bdc2- = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate with substituting groups X, DM-bdc2- = 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate or TM-bdc2- = 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and dabco = diazabicyclo[2.2.2.]octane) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the adsorptive removal of ethane from ethylene streams. The best performing material from this series is Zn2(TM-bdc)2(dabco) (DMOF-TM), which shows a high ethane uptake of 5.31 mmol g-1 at 110 kPa, with a good IAST selectivity of 1.88 towards ethane over ethylene. Through breakthrough measurements a high productivity of 13.1 L kg-1 per breakthrough is revealed with good reproducibility over five consecutive cycles. Molecular simulations show that the methyl groups of DMOF-TM are forming a van der Waals trap with the methylene groups from dabco, snuggly fitting the ethane. Further, rarely used high pressure coadsorption measurements, in pressure regimes that most scientific studies on hydrocarbon separation on MOFs ignore, reveal an increase in ethane capacity and selectivity for binary mixtures with increased pressures. The coadsorption measurements reveal good selectivity of 1.96 at 1000 kPa, which is verified also through IAST calculations up to 3000 kPa. This study overall showcases the opportunities that pore engineering by alkyl group incorporation and pressure increase offer to improve hydrocarbon separation in reticular materials.

The coordination chemistry of benzhydrazide with lanthanide(iii) ions: hydrothermal in situ ligand formation, structures, magnetic and photoluminescence sensing properties

The influence of synthetic conditions on the solid-state structural formation of lanthanide(iii) complexes based on a hydrazide ligand have been investigated and reported. Depending on the solvents and reaction temperatures, the reactions of hydrated Ln(NO₃)₃ with a benzohydrazide (bzz) ligand afforded three classes of lanthanide(iii) coordination complexes viz. [Ln(bzz)(NO₃)](NO₃)₂ (1Ln; Ln = Sm (1), Eu (2), Gd (3), Tb (4), Dy (5)), [Ln(bzz)(ben)₃(H₂O)]·H₂O (2Ln; Ln = Pr (6), Nd (7), Sm (8), Eu (9), Gd (10), Tb (11), Dy (12), Er (13)), and [Ln₃(ben)₃] (3Ln; Ln = Eu (14), Gd (15), Tb (16), Dy (17), Er (18), Tm (19), Yb (20), Lu (21)). Complexes 1-5 in series 1Ln were isolated by slow evaporation of their isopropanol solutions at ambient temperature, and the complexes display similar discrete structures bearing distinct intermolecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds to generate a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular architecture. Complexes 6-13 in series 2Ln were obtained under hydrothermal conditions at 110 °C where the in situ generated benzoate (ben) ligands participated in the formation of one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers (CPs) with the bzz ligands. At a temperature of 145 °C the hydrothermal conditions result in the formation of the thermodynamically more stable products of 14-21 in series 3Ln, in which the bzz ligand underwent complete in situ hydrolysis to create the ben ligand. These coordination assemblies feature 1D zigzag chains that are formed by unusual low coordination numbers of the six- and seven-fold coordinated Ln³⁺ centers bridged by the ben ligands in μ ₂- and μ ₃-coordination modes. Notably, the chain structures of 2Ln can be transformed into the zigzag tape-like structures of 3Ln upon heating the crystalline samples to 400 °C in air. In the solid state at room temperature, the Eu- (2, 9, 14) and Tb- (4, 11, 16) containing complexes emit red and green light, respectively. The luminescence investigations show that the Eu- (9, 14) and Tb-(11, 16) based CPs could be used as fluorescent probes for acetone and Co²⁺ ions via an energy competition mechanism. Meanwhile, the Gd- (10, 15) and Dy- (12, 17) based CPs show typical antiferromagnetic interactions.

High Enhancement in Proton Conductivity by Incorporating Sulfonic Acids into a Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework via "Click" Reaction

Taking a robust zirconium-based metal-organic framework, UiO-66, as a prototype, functional postmodification via the versatile Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne "click" reaction was carried out, and sulfonic acid groups were successfully grafted into its skeleton. Characterizations revealed that the MOF network was still well maintained after being treated by "clicked" modification. Investigations by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements revealed that its proton conductivity increases exponentially up to 8.8 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 at 80 °C and 98% RH, while those of the UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH₂ are only 6.3 × 10^-6 and 3.5 × 10^-6 S cm^-1, respectively, at the same condition. Additionally, the continuous test shows it possesses long-life reusability. Such a remarkable enhancement on the proton conductivities and high performance in long-life reusability of the resultant MOF demonstrated that the "click" reaction is a facile reaction in postmodification of robust porous materials toward targeted applications, with which highly promising candidates of proton-conductive electrolytes for applying in proton-exchange-membrane (PEM) fuel cell can be achieved.

A Showcase of Green Chemistry: Sustainable Synthetic Approach of Zirconium-Based MOF Materials

Zirconium-based metal-organic framework materials (Zr-MOFs) have more practical usage over most conventional benchmark porous materials and even many other MOFs due to the excellent structural stability, rich coordination forms, and various active sites. However, their mass-production and application are restricted by the high-cost raw materials, complex synthesis procedures, harsh reaction conditions, and unexpected environmental impact. Based on the principles of "Green Chemistry", considerable efforts have been done for breaking through the limitations, and significant progress has been made in the sustainable synthesis of Zr-MOFs over the past decade. In this review, the advancements of green raw materials and green synthesis methods in the synthesis of Zr-MOFs are reviewed, along with the corresponding drawbacks. The challenges and prospects are discussed and outlooked, expecting to provide guidance for the acceleration of the industrialization and commercialization of Zr-MOFs.

Incorporating Photochromic Triphenylamine into a Zirconium-Organic Framework for Highly Effective Photocatalytic Aerobic Oxidation of Sulfides

A zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) was successfully constructed via solvothermal assembly of a triphenylamine-based tricarboxylate ligand and Zr(IV) salt, the structure simulation of which revealed that it possesses a two-dimensional layered framework with a relatively rare dodecnuclear Zr₁₂ cluster as the inorganic building unit. The inherent photo-responsive property derived from the incorporated photochromic triphenylamine groups combined with its high stability makes the constructed MOF an efficient heterogeneous photocatalyst for the oxidation of sulfides, which is a fundamentally important reaction type in both environmental and pharmaceutical industries. The photocatalytic activity of the constructed MOF was first investigated under various conditions with thioanisole as a representative sulfide substrate. The MOF exhibited both high efficiency and selectivity on aerobic oxidation of thioanisole in methanol utilizing molecular oxygen in air as the oxidant under blue light irradiation for 10 h. Its high photocatalytic performance was also observed when extending the sulfide substrate to diverse thioanisole derivatives and even a sulfur-containing nerve agent simulant (2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide). The high photocatalytic efficiency and selectivity to a broad set of sulfide substrates make the triphenylamine-incorporating zirconium-based MOF a highly promising heterogeneous photocatalyst.

Selective Crystallization of Rare-Earth Ions into Cationic Metal-Organic Frameworks for Rare-Earth Separation

For rare-earth separation, selective crystallization into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offers new opportunities. Especially important is the development of MOF platforms with high selectivity toward target ions. Here we report a MOF platform (CPM-66) with low-coordination-number environment for rare-earth ions. This platform is highly responsive to the size variation of rare-earth ions and shows exceptional ion-size selectivity during crystallization. CPM-66 family are based on M₃ O trimers (M=6-coordinated Sc, In, Er-Lu) that are rare for lanthanides. We show that the size matching between urea-type solvents and metal ions is crucial for their successful synthesis. We further show that CPM-66 enables a dramatic multi-fold increase in separation efficiency over CPM-29 with 7-coordinated ions. This work provides some insights into methods to prepare low-coordinate MOFs from large ions and such MOFs could serve as high-efficiency platforms for lanthanide separation, as well as other applications.

A Series of Mesoporous Rare-Earth Metal-Organic Frameworks Constructed from Organic Secondary Building Units

Further development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) requires an establishment of hierarchical interaction within the framework. Herein, we report a series of mesoporous rare-earth (RE) MOFs that are constructed from an unusual 12-connected π-stacked pyrene secondary building unit (SBU) and a typical 12-connected RE₆ cluster (RE=Eu, Y, Yb, Tb, Ce). The judicious design of a butterfly-shape pyrene ligand with a tert-butyl substituent enables the formation of the disordered 12-connected organic SBUs on its strong intermolecular π-π interactions. The assembly of 12-connected inorganic cuboctahedron SBUs and 12-connected organic distorted hexagonal prism SBUs generates an unprecedented network that can be further simplified into a 4,4-connected pts net linked from planar square and tetrahedra. This work provides fresh insights into the design and synthesis of frameworks constructed from coordinatively, covalently, and noncovalently linked building units.

Linker Desymmetrization: Access to a Series of Rare-Earth Tetracarboxylate Frameworks with Eight-Connected Hexanuclear Nodes

The exploration of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through the rational design of building units with specific sizes, geometries, and symmetries is essential for enriching the structural diversity of porous solids for applications including storage, separation, and conversion. However, it is still a challenge to directly synthesize rare-earth (RE) MOFs with less connected clusters as a thermodynamically favored product. Herein, we report a systematic investigation on the influence of size, rigidity, and symmetry of linkers over the formation of RE-tetracarboxylate MOFs and uncover the critical role of linker desymmetrization in constructing RE-MOFs with eight-connected hexanuclear clusters. Our results on nine new RE-MOFs, PCN-50X (X = 1-9), indicate that utilization of trapezoidal or tetrahedral linkers provides accesses to traditionally unattainable RE-tetracarboxylate MOFs with 8-c hexanuclear nodes, while the introduction of square or rectangular linkers during the assembly of RE-MOFs based on polynuclear clusters typically leads to the MOFs constructed from 12-c nodes with underlying shp topology. By rational linker design, MOFs with two unprecedented (4, 8)-c nets, lxl and jun, can also be obtained. This work highlights linker desymmetrization as a powerful strategy to enhance MOFs' structural complexity and access MOF materials with nondefault topologies that can be potentially used for separation and catalysis.

Cr2O72− inside Zr/Hf-based metal–organic frameworks: highly sensitive and selective detection and crystallographic evidence

The (4,8)-connected Zr/Hf-MOFs exhibit excellent performances in the detection of Cr₂O₇²⁻ and the exact location and configuration of Cr₂O₇²⁻ inside the MOFs were revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies for the first time.
