Recent Advances in Fluorinated Graphene from Synthesis to Applications: Critical Review on Functional Chemistry and Structure Engineering

Fluorine-Modulated MXene-Derived Catalysts for Multiphase Sulfur Conversion in Lithium-Sulfur Battery

Fluorine owing to its inherently high electronegativity exhibits charge delocalization and ion dissociation capabilities; as a result, there has been an influx of research studies focused on the utilization of fluorides to optimize solid electrolyte interfaces and provide dynamic protection of electrodes to regulate the reaction and function performance of batteries. Nonetheless, the shuttle effect and the sluggish redox reaction kinetics emphasize the potential bottlenecks of lithium-sulfur batteries. Whether fluorine modulation regulate the reaction process of Li-S chemistry? Here, the TiOF/Ti3C2 MXene nanoribbons with a tailored F distribution were constructed via an NH4F fluorinated method. Relying on in situ characterizations and electrochemical analysis, the F activates the catalysis function of Ti metal atoms in the consecutive redox reaction. The positive charge of Ti metal sites is increased due to the formation of O-Ti-F bonds based on the Lewis acid-base mechanism, which contributes to the adsorption of polysulfides, provides more nucleation sites and promotes the cleavage of S-S bonds. This facilitates the deposition of Li2S at lower overpotentials. Additionally, fluorine has the capacity to capture electrons originating from Li2S dissolution due to charge compensation mechanisms. The fluorine modulation strategy holds the promise of guiding the construction of fluorine-based catalysts and facilitating the seamless integration of multiple consecutive heterogeneous catalytic processes.

Lateral Heterostructure Formed by Highly Thermally Conductive Fluorinated Graphene for Efficient Device Thermal Management

The continued miniaturization of chips demands highly thermally conductive materials and effective thermal management strategies. Particularly, the high-field transport of the devices built with 2D materials is limited by self-heating. Here a systematic control of heat flow in single-side fluorinated graphene (FG) with varying degrees of fluorination is reported, revealing a superior room-temperature thermal conductivity as high as 128 W m-1 K-1. Monolayer graphene/FG lateral heterostructures with seamless junctions are approached for device fabrication. Efficient in-plane heat removal paths from graphene channel to side FG are created, contributing significant reduction of the channel peak temperature and improvement in the current-carrying capability and power density. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the interfacial thermal conductance of the heterostructure is facilitated by the high degree of overlap in the phonon vibrational spectra. The findings offer novel design insights for efficient heat dissipation in micro- and nanoelectronic devices.

Self-Assembled MXene@Fluorographene Hybrid for High Dielectric Constant and Low Loss Ferroelectric Polymer Composite Films

Modern electrical applications urgently need flexible polymer films with a high dielectric constant (εr) and low loss. Recently, the MXene-filled percolative composite has emerged as a potential material choice because of the promised high εr. Nevertheless, the typically accompanied high dielectric loss hinders its applications. Herein, a facile and effective surface modification strategy of cladding Ti3C2Tx MXene (T = F or O; FMX) with fluorographene (FG) via self-assembly is proposed. The obtained FMX@FG hybrid yields high εr (up to 108 @1 kHz) and low loss (loss tangent tan δ = 1.16 @ 1 kHz) in a ferroelectric polymer composite at a low loading level (the equivalent of 1.5 wt % FMX), which is superior to its counterparts in our work (e.g., FMX: εr = 104, tan δ = 10.71) and other studies. It is found that the FG layer outside FMX plays a critical role in both the high dielectric constant and low loss from experimental characterizations and finite element simulations. For one thing, FG with a high F/C ratio would induce a favorable structure of high β-phase crystallinity, extensive microcapacitor networks, and abundant interfacial dipoles in polymer composites that account for the high εr. For another, FG, as a highly insulating layer, can inhibit the formation of conductive networks and inter-FMX electron tunneling, which is responsible for conduction loss. The results demonstrate the potential of a self-assembled FMX@FG hybrid for high εr and low loss polymer composite films and offer a new strategy for designing advanced polymer composite dielectrics.

Fluorinated carbon as high-performance cathode for aqueous zinc primary batteries

Fluorinated carbon (CFx) has been extensively served as promising positive electrode material for lithium primary batteries due to its high energy density. However, there are comparatively far less reports about the use of CFx on other battery systems, let alone on the research of aqueous batteries. Herein in this study, we employed CFx as the cathode active for aqueous zinc batteries for the first time and systematically investigated its electrochemical behavior under a series of aqueous zinc-ion electrolytes. As is discovered that the F/C ratio (the x value in CFx) of CFx have significant effects on the electrochemical performance of aqueous Zn/CFx batteries. Specifically, CF0.85 exhibits excellent electrochemical property with delivering a remarkable discharge capacity of 503 mA h g-1 and energy density of 388 W h kg-1 (at a current rate of 30 mA g-1 under temperature of 25 °C), much better than several other CFx electrode with F/C ratio of 0.70, 0.95, and 1.10, respectively. Besides, it also exhibits decent temperature performance with discharge capacities of 550 mA h g-1 at 50 °C and 460 mA h g-1 at 0 °C under current density of 30 mA g-1. Furthermore, the electrochemical discharge mechanism based on conversion reaction was further uncovered by applying XPS, XRD, SEM and EDS elemental analysis characterization techniques. In conclusion, these results demonstrate the potential application value of CFx in aqueous zinc primary batteries.

Engineering Two-Dimensional Nodal Semimetals in Functionalized Biphenylene by Fluorine Adatoms

We propose a band engineering scheme on the biphenylene network, a newly synthesized carbon allotrope. We illustrate that the electronic structure of the biphenylene network can be significantly altered by controlling conditions affecting the symmetry and destructive interference of wave functions through periodic fluorination. First, we investigate the mechanism for the appearance of a type-II Dirac fermion in a pristine biphenylene network. We show that the essential ingredients are mirror symmetries and stabilization of the compact localized eigenstates via destructive interference. While the former is used for the band-crossing point along high symmetry lines, the latter induces highly inclined Dirac dispersions. Subsequently, we demonstrate the transformation of the biphenylene network's type-II Dirac semimetal phase into various Dirac phases such as type-I Dirac, gapped type-II Dirac, and nodal line semimetals through the deliberate disruption of mirror symmetry or modulation of destructive interference by varying the concentration of fluorine atoms.

Uncovering nano-bonechar for attenuating fluoride in naturally contaminated soil

Fluoride ion (F-) is one of the major geogenic contaminants in water and soil. Excessive consumption of these geogenic contaminants poses serious health impacts on humans and plants. In this study, a novel carbonaceous material, nano-bonechar, was synthesized from cow bones and applied as a soil amendment at rates of 0, 0.5, 1, and 2% to remediate and revitalize naturally F--contaminated soil. The results revealed that the nano-bonechar significantly reduced the mobility and bioavailability of F- by 90% in the contaminated soil, and improved the soil quality by increasing the soil water holding capacity, soil organic matter, and the bioavailable contents of PO43-, Ca2+, and Na+. Subsequently, the pot experiment results showed a significant reduction in the uptake of F- by 93% in Zea mays plants. Moreover, the nano-bonechar application improved the plant's growth, as indicated by the higher fresh and dry weights, root and shoot lengths, and total content of PO43-, Ca2+, and K+ than those of un-amended soil. The F-immobilization in soil was mainly due to the presence of the hydroxyapatite [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] mineral in the nano-bonechar. Ion exchange between OH- (of nano-bonechar) and F- (of soil), and the formation of insoluble fluorite (CaF2) contributed to the attenuation of F- mobility in the soil. It is concluded that nano-bonechar, due to its size and enrichment in hydroxyapatite, could successfully be utilized for the rapid remediation and revitalization of F--contaminated agricultural soil.

Interfacial Assembly of 2D Graphene-Derived Ion Channels for Water-Based Green Energy Conversion

The utilization of sustained and green energy is believed to alleviate increasing menace of global environmental concerns and energy dilemma. Interfacial assembly of 2D graphene-derived ion channels (2D-GDICs) with tunable ion/fluid transport behavior enables efficient harvesting of renewable green energy from ubiquitous water, especially for osmotic energy harvesting. In this review, various interfacial assembly strategies for fabricating diverse 2D-GDICs are summarized and their ion transport properties are discussed. This review analyzes how particular structure and charge density/distribution of 2D-GDIC can be modulated to minimize internal resistance of ion/fluid transport and enhance energy conversion efficiency, and highlights stimuli-responsive functions and stability of 2D-GDIC and further examines the possibility of integrating 2D-GDIC with other energy conversion systems. Notably, the presented preparation and applications of 2D-GDIC also inspire and guide other 2D materials to fabricate sophisticated ion channels for targeted applications. Finally, potential challenges in this field is analyzed and a prospect to future developments toward high-performance or large-scale real-word applications is offered.

Electrolyte Engineering Empowers Li||CFx Batteries to Achieve High Energy Density and Low Self-Discharge at Harsh Conditions

Given its exceptional theoretical energy density (over 2000 Wh kg-1), lithium||carbon fluoride (Li||CFx) battery has garnered global attention. N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP)-based electrolyte is regarded as one promising candidate for tremendously enhancing the energy density of Li||CFx battery, provided self-discharge challenges can be resolved. This study successfully achieves a low self-discharge (LSD) and desirable electrochemical performance in Li||CFx batteries at high temperatures by utilizing NMP as the solvent and incorporating additional ingredients, including vinylene carbonate additive, as well as the dual-salt systems formed by LiBF4 with three different Li salts, namely lithium bis(oxalato)borate, lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate, and LiNO3. The experimental results unfold that the proposed methods not only minimize aluminum current collector corrosion, but also effectively passivate the Li metal anode. Among them, LiNO3 exhibits the most pronounced effect that achieves an energy density of ≈2400 Wh kg-1 at a current density of 10 mA g-1 at 30 °C, nearly 0% capacity-fade rate after 300 h of storage at 60 °C, and the capability to maintain a stable open-circuit voltage over 4000 h. This work provides a distinctive perspective on how to realize both high energy density and LSD rates at high temperature of Li||CFx battery.

Beyond Natural Channel Proteins: Recent Advances in Fluorinated Nanochannels

Inspired by the structures and functions of natural channel proteins that selectively permeate ions and molecules across biological membranes, synthetic molecules capable of self-assembling into supramolecular nanotubes within the hydrophobic layer of the membranes have been designed and their material permeation properties have been studied. More recently, synthetic chemists have ventured to incorporate fluorine atoms, elements rarely found in natural proteins, into the structure of synthetic channels and discovered anomalous transmembrane material permeation properties. In this Perspective, the author provides a brief overview of recent advances in the development of fluorinated nanochannels and possible directions for the future.

Revealing the Mechano-Electrochemical Coupling Behavior and Discharge Mechanism of Fluorinated Carbon Cathodes toward High-Power Lithium Primary Batteries

Unclear reaction mechanisms and unsatisfactory power performance hinder the further development of advanced lithium/fluorinated carbon (Li/CFx ) batteries. Herein, the mechano-electrochemical coupling behavior of a CFx cathode is investigated by in situ monitoring strain/stress using digital image correlation (DIC) techniques, electrochemical methods, and theoretical equations. The DIC monitoring results present the distribution and dynamic evolution of the plane strain and indicate strong dependence toward the material structure and discharge rate. The average plane principal strain of fully discharged 2D fluorinated graphene nanosheets (FGNSs) at 0.5 C is 0.50%, which is only 38.5% that of conventional bulk-structure CFx . Furthermore, the superior structural stability of the FGNSs is demonstrated by the microstructure and component characterization before and after discharge. The plane stress evolution is calculated based on theoretical equations, and the contributions of electrochemical and mechanical factors are examined and discussed. Subsequently, a structure-dependent three-region discharge mechanism for CFx electrodes is proposed from a mechanical perspective. Additionally, the surface deformation of Li/FGNSs pouch cells formed during the discharge process is monitored using in situ DIC. This study reveals the discharge mechanism of Li/CFx batteries and facilitates the design of advanced CFx materials.

First-principles prediction of the thermal conductivity of two configurations of difluorinated graphene monolayer

Lattice thermal conductivity (κL) plays a crucial role in the thermal management of electronic devices. In this study, we systematically investigate the thermal transport properties of monolayer fluorinated graphene using a combination of machine learning-based interatomic potentials and the phonon Boltzmann transport equation. At a temperature of 300 K, we find that the κL values for chair-configured fluorinated graphene monolayers are 184.24 W m-1 K-1 in the zigzag direction and 205.57 W m-1 K-1 in the armchair direction. For the boat configuration, the κL values are 120.45 W m-1 K-1 and 64.26 W m-1 K-1 in the respective directions. The disparities in κL between these two configurations predominantly stem from differences in phonon relaxation times, which can be elucidated by examining the Grüneisen parameters representing the degree of anharmonicity. A more in-depth analysis of bond strengths, as assessed by the crystal orbital Hamiltonian population, reveals that the stronger in-plane CC bonds in chair-configured fluorinated graphene monolayers are the primary contributors to the observed variations in anharmonicity.

2D Fluorinated Graphene Oxide (FGO)-Polyethyleneimine (PEI) Based 3D Porous Nanoplatform for Effective Removal of Forever Toxic Chemicals, Pharmaceutical Toxins, and Waterborne Pathogens from Environmental Water Samples

Although water is essential for life, as per the United Nations, around 2 billion people in this world lack access to safely managed drinking water services at home. Herein we report the development of a two-dimensional (2D) fluorinated graphene oxide (FGO) and polyethylenimine (PEI) based three-dimensional (3D) porous nanoplatform for the effective removal of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pharmaceutical toxins, and waterborne pathogens from contaminated water. Experimental data show that the FGO-PEI based nanoplatform has an estimated adsorption capacity (qm) of ∼219 mg g-1 for perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and can be used for 99% removal of several short- and long-chain PFAS. A comparative PFNA capturing study using different types of nanoplatforms indicates that the qm value is in the order FGO-PEI > FGO > GO-PEI, which indicates that fluorophilic, electrostatic, and hydrophobic interactions play important roles for the removal of PFAS. Reported data show that the FGO-PEI based nanoplatform has a capability for 100% removal of moxifloxacin antibiotics with an estimated qm of ∼299 mg g-1. Furthermore, because the pore size of the nanoplatform is much smaller than the size of pathogens, it has a capability for 100% removal of Salmonella and Escherichia coli from water. Moreover, reported data show around 96% removal of PFAS, pharmaceutical toxins, and pathogens simultaneously from spiked river, lake, and tap water samples using the nanoplatform.

Flexible Fluorinated Graphene/Poly(vinyl Alcohol) Films toward High Thermal Management Capability

Graphene is widely used in heat dissipation, owing to its inherently high in-plane thermal conductivity and excellent mechanical properties. However, its poor cross-plane thermal conductivity limits its use in some electronic applications. The electron distribution of graphene and the interaction with the base material can be greatly altered by introducing F, the most electronegative element, giving fluorinated graphene oxide (FG) with a high thermal conductivity. Herein, FG is prepared by grafting F atoms onto the surface of graphene oxide in a low-temperature solid-phase reaction with poly(vinylidene fluoride) as a fluorine source. This method can effectively avoid the use of dangerous substances such as HF and F2. The FG dispersion and aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution are sequentially vacuum-filtered to obtain the FG/PVA composite film. After natural drying and hot-pressing, the thermal conductivity of the N-FG/PVA film is enhanced by the hydrogen bond between F of FG and the hydroxyl group of PVA. The in-plane and cross-plane thermal conductivity of an N-FG/PVA film containing 10.4 wt % FG are 7.13 and 1.42 W m-1 k-1, respectively. The film has a tensile strength of 60 MPa and an elongation at a break of 28%, which is promising for the thermal management of flexible electronic devices.

MoTe2/InN van der Waals heterostructures for gas sensors: a DFT study

Vertical van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have shown potential for gas sensing owing to their remarkable sensitivity. However, the optimization process for achieving the best gas sensing performance is complicated by the heterostructure's reliance on both physical and electrical characteristics. This study employs density functional theory (DFT) to analyse the structural and electronic parameters of a MoTe2/InN vdW heterostructure. The findings of this study indicate that the vdW heterostructure has a type-II band alignment with higher adsorption energy towards NH3, NO2, and SO2 than the individual monolayers. In specific, the heterostructure is well suited for NO2 detection but has limitations in reliably detecting NH3 and SO2 due to longer recovery times. We find significant hybridization between the adsorbate and interacting surfaces' orbitals and a notable presence of NO2 molecular orbitals in proximity to the Fermi level. Additionally, dielectric and work function modulations offer a viable means to develop optical-based gas sensors that can selectively detect NO2. Our research provides valuable insights into vdW heterostructure design for high-performance gas sensors.

Surface Engineering of Fluorinated Graphene Nanosheets Enables Ultrafast Lithium/Sodium/Potassium Primary Batteries

Fluorinated carbon (CFx ) is considered as a promising cathode material for lithium/sodium/potassium primary batteries with superior theoretical energy density. However, achieving high energy and power densities simultaneously remains a considerable challenge due to the strong covalency of the C-F bond in the highly fluorinated CFx . Herein, an efficient surface engineering strategy combining surface defluorination and nitrogen doping enables fluorinated graphene nanosheets (DFG-N) to possess controllable conductive nanolayers and reasonably regulated C-F bonds. The DFG-N delivers an unprecedented dual performance for lithium primary batteries with a power density of 77456 W kg-1 and an energy density of 1067 Wh kg-1 at an ultrafast rate of 50 C, which is the highest level reported to date. The DFG-N also achieves a record power density of 15 256 and 17 881 W kg-1 at 10 C for sodium and potassium primary batteries, respectively. The characterization results and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the excellent performance of DFG-N is attributed to surface engineering strategies that remarkably improve electronic and ionic conductivity without sacrificing the high fluorine content. This work provides a compelling strategy for developing advanced ultrafast primary batteries that combine ultrahigh energy density and power density.

The Foreseeable Future of Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries: Advanced Upcycling for Toxic Electrolyte, Cathode, and Anode from Environmental and Technological Perspectives

With the rise of the new energy vehicle industry represented by Tesla and BYD, the need for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) grows rapidly. However, owing to the limited service life of LIBs, the large-scale retirement tide of LIBs has come. The recycling of spent LIBs has become an inevitable trend of resource recovery, environmental protection, and social demand. The low added value recovery of previous LIBs mostly used traditional metal extraction, which caused environmental damage and had high cost. Beyond metal extraction, the upcycling of spent LIBs came into being. In this work, we have outlined and particularly focus on sustainable upcycling technologies of toxic electrolyte, cathode, and anode from spent LIBs. For electrolyte, whether electrolyte extraction or decomposition, restoring the original electrolyte components or decomposing them into low-carbon energy conversion is the goal of electrolyte upcycling. Direct regeneration and preparation of advanced materials are the best strategies for cathodic upcycling with the advantages of cost and energy consumption, but challenges remain in industrial practice. The regeneration of advanced graphite-based materials and battery-grade graphite shows us the prospect of regeneration of anode. Furthermore, the challenges and future development of spent LIBs upcycling are summarized and discussed from technological and environmental perspectives.

Enhancing High-Capacity and High-Rate Sodium-Ion Storage through Synergistic N,S Dual Doping of Hard Carbon

Hard carbon, as the most promising commercial anode materials of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), has suffered from the coupling limitations on initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE), capacity, and rate capability. Herein, to break such coupling limitations, sulfur-rich nitrogen-doped carbon nanomaterials (S-NC) were synthesized by a synergistic modification strategy, including structure/morphology regulation and dual heteroatom doping. The small specific surface area of S-NC is beneficial for inhibiting excessive growth of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film and irreversible interfacial reaction. The covalent S can serve as active electrochemical sites by Faradaic reactions and provide extra capacity. Benefit by N, S co-doping, S-NC shows large interlayer spacing, high defects, good electronic conductivity, strong ion adsorption performance, and fast Na+ ion transport, which combined with a more significant pore volume result in speedier reaction kinetics. Hence, S-NC possesses a high reversible specific capacity of 464.7 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 with a high ICE of 50.7%, excellent rate capability (209.8 mAh g-1 at 10.0 A g-1 ), and superb long-cycle capability delivering a capacity of 229.0 mAh g-1 (85% retention) after 1800 cycles at 5.0 A g-1 .

A snowboard-inspired lubricating nanosystem with responsive drug release for osteoarthritis therapy

Most of present works of osteoarthritis (OA) therapy are focusing on reducing friction and improving drug loading capacity, while little attention is paid to realizing long-time lubrication and on-demand drug release. In this study, inspired by snowboards with good solid-liquid interface lubrication, a fluorinated graphene based nanosystem with dual functions of long-time lubrication and thermal-responsive drug release was constructed for OA synergetic therapy. An aminated polyethylene glycol bridging strategy was developed to enable covalent grafting of hyaluronic acid on fluorinated graphene. This design not only greatly increased the nanosystem's biocompatibility, but also reduced the coefficient of friction (COF) by 83.3 % compared to H₂O. The nanosystem showed long-time and steady aqueous lubrication behavior even after more than 24,000 times of friction tests, and a low COF of 0.13 was obtained with over 90% wear volume reduction. Diclofenac sodium was controllably loaded and sustained drug release was tuned by near-infrared light. Moreover, anti-inflammation results showed that the nanosystem had good protective effect on inhibiting OA deterioration, which could up-regulate cartilage anabolic genes of Col2α and aggrecan while down-regulating catabolic proteases genes of TAC1 and MMP1. This work constructs a novel dual-functional nanosystem that realizes friction and wear reduction with long lubrication life, and shows thermal-responsive on-demand drug release with good synergistic therapeutic effect of OA.

Effect of aging on mechanical and antibacterial properties of fluorinated graphene reinforced glass ionomer: In vitro study

OBJECTIVES

This study: 1) aims to test the mechanical and antibacterial properties of fluorinated graphene strengthened glass ionomer materials (FG/GICs); 2) aims to investigate the effects of thermo-cycling on (FG/GICs).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Fluorinated graphene (FG) with bright white color was prepared from fluorinated graphite (SIGMA Aldrich), using modified Hummer's method, to be added to conventional glass ionomer cements (GICs). In addition to a control group (group 1), experimentally modified GICs were prepared by adding FG to the conventional glass ionomer powder with three different weight ratios; (group 2, 1 wt %; group 3, 2.5 wt %; and group 4, 5 wt %) using mechanical blending method. Experimental groups of the specimens (n = 240) were divided, for each concentration (n = 120) half of the specimens were subjected to thermo-cycling. Hardness, compressive strength, and antibacterial activity of (FG/GICs) were measured with and without thermo-cycling. Compressive strength was measured by a universal testing machine, hardness was measured using a Vickers micro-hardness tester, and antibacterial effects against staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus mutans were tested by the pellicle sticking method. For statistical analysis, numerical data were explored for normality and variance homogeneity using Shapiro-Wilk and Leven's tests respectively.

RESULTS

The prepared (FG/GICs) showed an increase in hardness in group 4 (p < 0.001). Groups 3 and 4 gave the highest compressive strength values with no significant difference between them (p < 0.001). Groups 2, 3, and 4 showed improved antibacterial activity with no statistical difference between them (p > 0.001). Results after thermo-cycling showed significantly decreased hardness, and compressive strength values (p < 0.001), however, the results of antibacterial activity against streptococcus mutans showed no statistical difference after thermo-cycling (group 2, p = 0.05; group 3, p = 0.18; group 4, p = 0.26). The same results were observed for antibacterial activity against staphylococcus aureus (p = 0.92, p = 0.14, and p = 0.48 respectively).

CONCLUSION

FG can be considered a promising additive to GICs to promote its anti-cariogenic effects, however, these antibacterial effects are only useful in the short term, as aging adversely affected their mechanical properties. The 2.5 wt % FG/GICs is suggested to be the most encouraging, as after aging, it represented the highest compressive strength among all groups, while its hardness values were at least comparable to that of conventional glass ionomer.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

FG/GICs can be considered an anti-cariogenic restoration in temporary restorative interventions, as in certain cases in deciduous teeth where considerable esthetics may be required, especially those with difficult moisture control, where neither resin composite restorations nor amalgam restorations will be indicated. It can also be used for patients with high caries index or in atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) in low-income countries.

Graphene in Polymeric Nanocomposite Membranes—Current State and Progress

One important application of polymer/graphene nanocomposites is in membrane technology. In this context, promising polymer/graphene nanocomposites have been developed and applied in the production of high-performance membranes. This review basically highlights the designs, properties, and use of polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes in the field of gas separation and purification. Various polymer matrices (polysulfone, poly(dimethylsiloxane), poly(methyl methacrylate), polyimide, etc.), have been reinforced with graphene to develop nanocomposite membranes. Various facile strategies, such as solution casting, phase separation, infiltration, self-assembly, etc., have been employed in the design of gas separation polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes. The inclusion of graphene in polymeric membranes affects their morphology, physical properties, gas permeability, selectivity, and separation processes. Furthermore, the final membrane properties are affected by the nanofiller content, modification, dispersion, and processing conditions. Moreover, the development of polymer/graphene nanofibrous membranes has introduced novelty in the field of gas separation membranes. These high-performance membranes have the potential to overcome challenges arising from gas separation conditions. Hence, this overview provides up-to-date coverage of advances in polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes, especially for gas separation applications. The separation processes of polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes (in parting gases) are dependent upon variations in the structural design and processing techniques used. Current challenges and future opportunities related to polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes are also discussed.

Recent Progress in Modifications, Properties, and Practical Applications of Glass Fiber

As a new member of the silica-derivative family, modified glass fiber (MGF) has attracted extensive attention because of its excellent properties and potential applications. Surface modification of glass fiber (GF) greatly changes its performance, resulting in a series of changes to its surface structure, wettability, electrical properties, mechanical properties, and stability. This article summarizes the latest research progress in MGF, including the different modification methods, the various properties, and their advanced applications in different fields. Finally, the challenges and possible solutions were provided for future investigations of MGF.

A Multifunctional Integrated Metal-Free MRI Agent for Early Diagnosis of Oxidative Stress in a Mouse Model of Diabetic Cardiomyopathy

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are closely associated with the progression of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) and can be regarded as one of its early biomarkers. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is emerging as a powerful tool for the detection of cardiac abnormalities, but the sensitive and direct ROS-response MRI probe remains to be developed. This restricts the early diagnosis of DCM and prevents timely clinical interventions, resulting in serious and irreversible pathophysiological abnormalities. Herein, a novel ROS-response contrast-enhanced MRI nanoprobe (RCMN) is developed by multi-functionalizing fluorinated carbon nanosheets (FCNs) with multi-hydroxyl and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl groups. RCMNs capture ROS and then gather in the heart provisionally, which triggers MRI signal changes to realize the in vivo detection of ROS. In contrast to the clinical MRI agents, the cardiac abnormalities of disease mice is detected 8 weeks in advance with the assistance of RCMNs, which greatly advances the diagnostic window of DCM. To the best of the knowledge, this is the first ROS-response metal-free T₂ -weighted MRI probe for the early diagnosis of DCM mice model. Furthermore, RCMNs can timely scavenge excessively produced ROS to alleviate oxidative stress.

Isotope Engineered Fluorinated Single and Bilayer Graphene: Insights into Fluorination Selectivity, Stability, and Defect Passivation

Tailoring the physicochemical properties of graphene through functionalization remains a major interest for next-generation technological applications. However, defect formation due to functionalization greatly endangers the intrinsic properties of graphene, which remains a serious concern. Despite numerous attempts to address this issue, a comprehensive analysis has not been conducted. This work reports a two-step fluorination process to stabilize the fluorinated graphene and obtain control over the fluorination-induced defects in graphene layers. The structural, electronic and isotope-mass-sensitive spectroscopic characterization unveils several not-yet-resolved facts, such as fluorination sites and CF bond stability in partially-fluorinated graphene (F-SLG). The stability of fluorine has been correlated to fluorine co-shared between two graphene layers in fluorinated-bilayer-graphene (F-BLG). The desorption energy of co-shared fluorine is an order of magnitude higher than the CF bond energy in F-SLG due to the electrostatic interaction and the inhibition of defluorination in the F-BLG. Additionally, F-BLG exhibits enhanced light-matter interaction, which has been utilized to design a proof-of-concept field-effect phototransistor that produces high photocurrent response at a time <200 µs. Thus, the study paves a new avenue for the in-depth understanding and practical utilization of fluorinated graphenic carbon.

Applications of Graphene in Five Senses, Nervous System, and Artificial Muscles

Graphene remains of great interest in biomedical applications because of biocompatibility. Diseases relating to human senses interfere with life satisfaction and happiness. Therefore, the restoration by artificial organs or sensory devices may bring a bright future by the recovery of senses in patients. In this review, we update the most recent progress in graphene based sensors for mimicking human senses such as artificial retina for image sensors, artificial eardrums, gas sensors, chemical sensors, and tactile sensors. The brain-like processors are discussed based on conventional transistors as well as memristor related neuromorphic computing. The brain-machine interface is introduced for providing a single pathway. Besides, the artificial muscles based on graphene are summarized in the means of actuators in order to react to the physical world. Future opportunities remain for elevating the performances of human-like sensors and their clinical applications.

Few-layer Graphene Lithiophilic and Sodiophilic Diffusion Layer on Porous Stainless Steel as Lithium and Sodium Metal Anodes

In order to subdue the obvious problem of uneven electric field distribution on regularly used copper/aluminum current collectors for alkali metal batteries, graphene on porous stainless steel (pSS_Gr) was fabricated using the ion etching technique that is employed as an effective host for lithium and sodium metal anodes. The binder-free pSS_Gr demonstrated stable Li plating and stripping at areal current and capacity of 6 mA cm^-2 and 2.54 mAh cm^-2 , respectively, for over 1000 cycles with 98% coulombic efficiency (C.E.). Also, in the case of Na metal anode, the host has shown stable performance at 4 mA cm^-2 and 1 mAh cm^-2 over 1000 cycles with ∼100% C.E.. Further, a full cell composed of Li-plated pSS_Gr as an anode and LiFePO₄ as a cathode is electrochemically tested at 50 mA g^-1 current density with stable 100 cycles.

Trifluoromethylated 4,5-Dihydro-1,2,4-triazin-6(1H)-ones via (3+3)-Annulation of Nitrile Imines with α-Amino Esters

The synthesis of two series of monocyclic and bicyclic trifluoromethylated 4,5-dihydro-1,2,4-triazin-6(1H)-one derivatives based on (3+3)-annulation of methyl esters derived from natural α-amino acids with in situ generated trifluoroacetonitrile imines has been described. The devised protocol is characterized by a wide scope, easily accessible substrates, remarkable functional group tolerance, and high chemical yield. In reactions with chiral starting materials, no racemization at the stereogenic centers was observed and the respective enantiomerically pure products were obtained. Selected functional group interconversions carried out under catalytic hydrogenation and mild PTC oxidation conditions were also demonstrated.

Facile synthesis of polyoxometalate supported on magnetic graphene oxide as a hybrid catalyst for efficient oxidation of aldehydes

In the present study, Anderson-type polyoxometalate [N(C₄H₉)₄] [FeMo₆O₁₈(OH)₆] (FeMo₆) was immobilized on amino-modified magnetic graphene oxide and employed as a new hybrid catalyst in oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acids. The synthesized hybrid catalyst Fe₃O₄/GO/[FeMo₆] was characterized using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopies (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Raman spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The results indicated that our catalyst was quite active in oxidizing the aldehydes to their corresponding carboxylic acids in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The synthesized catalyst can be easily separated from the reaction medium and reused for six consecutive runs without a significant reduction in reaction efficiency.

Emerging graphene derivatives as active 2D coordination platforms for single-atom catalysts

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) based on graphene derivatives are an emerging and growing class of materials functioning as two-dimensional (2D) metal-coordination scaffolds with intriguing properties. Recently, owing to the rich chemistry of fluorographene, new avenues have opened toward graphene derivatives with selective, spacer-free, and dense functionalization, acting as in-plane or out-of-plane metal coordination ligands. The particular structural features give rise to intriguing phenomena occurring between the coordinated metals and the graphene backbone. These include redox processes, charge transfer, emergence, and stabilization of rare or otherwise unstable metal valence states, as well as metal-support and metal-metal synergism. The vast potential of such systems has been demonstrated as enzyme mimics for cooperative mixed-valence SACs, ethanol fuel cells, and CO₂ fixation; however, it is anticipated that their impact will further expand toward diverse fields, e.g., advanced organic transformations, electrochemical energy storage, and energy harvesting.

A Review of Performance Prediction Based on Machine Learning in Materials Science

With increasing demand in many areas, materials are constantly evolving. However, they still have numerous practical constraints. The rational design and discovery of new materials can create a huge technological and social impact. However, such rational design and discovery require a holistic, multi-stage design process, including the design of the material composition, material structure, material properties as well as process design and engineering. Such a complex exploration using traditional scientific methods is not only blind but also a huge waste of time and resources. Machine learning (ML), which is used across data to find correlations in material properties and understand the chemical properties of materials, is being considered a new way to explore the materials field. This paper reviews some of the major recent advances and applications of ML in the field of properties prediction of materials and discusses the key challenges and opportunities in this cross-cutting area.

Inverse Relationship between Thickness and Wear of Fluorinated Graphene: "Thinner Is Better"

Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials are excellent candidates for utilization as a solid lubricant or additive at all length scales from macro-scale mechanical devices to micro/nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS). In such applications, wear resistance of ultrathin 2D materials is critical for sustained lubrication performance. Here, we investigated the wear of fluorinated graphene (FG) nanosheets deposited on silicon surfaces using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and discovered that the wear resistance of FG improves as the FG thickness decreases from 4.2 to 0.8 nm (corresponding to seven layers to single layer) and the surface energy of the substrate underneath the FG nanosheets increases. On the basis of density function theory (DFT) calculations, the negative correlation of wear resistance to FG thickness and the positive correlation to substrate surface energy could be explained with the degree of interfacial charge transfer between FG and substrate which affects the strength of FG adhesion to the substrate.

Electrocatalytic activity for proton reduction by a covalent non-metal graphene-fullerene hybrid

A non-metal covalent hybrid of fullerene and graphene was synthesized in one step via fluorographene chemistry. Its electrocatalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction and durability was ascribed to intrahybrid charge-transfer phenomena, exploiting the electron-accepting properties of C₆₀ and the high conductivity and large surface area of graphene.

A metal-free electrocatalyst consisting of a covalently linked graphene–fullerene hybrid material was prepared following the chemistry of fluorographene, displaying improved hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalytic activity and high durability.

SERS-Based Methodology for the Quantification of Ultratrace Graphene Oxide in Water Samples

The extensive use of graphene materials in real-world applications has increased their potential release into the environment. To evaluate their possible health and ecological risks, there is a need for analytical methods that can quantify these materials at very low concentrations in environmental media such as water. In this work, a simple, reproducible, and sensitive method to detect graphene oxide (GO) in water samples using the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technique is presented. The Raman signal of graphene is enhanced when deposited on a substrate of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), thus enabling its determination at low concentrations with no need for any preconcentration step. The practical limit of quantification achieved with the proposed method was 0.1 ng mL^-1, which is lower than the predicted concentrations for graphene in effluent water reported to date. The optimized procedure has been successively applied to the determination of ultratraces of GO in water samples.

Stabilizing Li-O2 Batteries with Multifunctional Fluorinated Graphene

As a full cell system with attractive theoretical energy density, challenges faced by Li-O₂ batteries (LOBs) are not only the deficient actual capacity and superoxide-derived parasitic reactions on the cathode side but also the stability of Li-metal anode. To solve simultaneously intrinsic issues, multifunctional fluorinated graphene (CF_x, x = 1, F-Gr) was introduced into the ether-based electrolyte of LOBs. F-Gr can accelerate O₂^- transformation and O₂^--participated oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process, resulting in enhanced discharge capacity and restrained O₂^--derived side reactions of LOBs, respectively. Moreover, F-Gr induced the F-rich and O-depleted solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film formation, which have improved Li-metal stability. Therefore, energy storage capacity, efficiency, and cyclability of LOBs have been markedly enhanced. More importantly, the method developed in this work to disperse F-Gr into an ether-based electrolyte for improving LOBs' performances is convenient and significant from both scientific and engineering aspects.

Preparation of Highly Stable and Electrochemically Active Three-dimensional Interconnected Graphene Frameworks from Jute Sticks

Over the past few years, the environmentally friendly synthesis of nanomaterials, including graphene using green chemistry, has attracted tremendous attention due to its easy handling, low cost, and biocompatibility. Here we demonstrate a facile and efficient green synthesis route for producing highly stable and electrochemically active three-dimensional interconnected graphene frameworks (3DIGF) from jute sticks. Initially, jute sticks derived three-dimensional amorphous activated carbon nanosheets (3DAACNs) were prepared at low temperatures (i.e., 850 °C) in an inert environment. The resultant 3DAACNs were then heat treated at a high temperature (i.e., 2700 °C) under an inert environment, resulting in 3DIGF. The prepared carbonaceous materials were fully characterized, and various experimental techniques confirmed the preparation of 3DIGF. The prepared 3DIGF shows a highly stable nature in thermal and chemical environments and demonstrates a highly dynamic nature for the electrooxidation of sulfide. This study could be considered a vital contribution towards the economic and simple approach for preparing 3DIGF from biomass.

Non-clustering ofsp3fluorine adatoms on pristine graphene surface

Fluorination can change graphene's properties, and which is theoretically relative to fluorination pattern ofsp³fluorine adatoms on graphene surface. The common view for the pattern is that it can easily form as a large cluster for the low migration barrier of fluorine adatoms on pristine graphene surface. Here, we report thatsp³fluorine adatoms are well-dispersed rather than clustered due to that the intensity ratio of 1.8 for C-CF/CF peaks (R) of fluorinated graphene is much higher thanR≈ 0 for clustered pattern. The low magnetic inducing efficiency of 1 µ_B/1000F adatoms indicates that the 'nonmagnetic' fluorine pairs rather than 'magnetic' fluorine 'points' dominate the well-dispersedsp³pattern. Our findings introduce a new insight into the fluorination structure properties of fluorinated and othersp³functionalized such as hydrogenated, chlorinated, or hydroxylated graphene and other carbon materials.

Advanced Lithium Primary Batteries: Key Materials, Research Progresses and Challenges

In recent years, with the vigorous development and gradual deployment of new energy vehicles, more attention has been paid to the research on lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Compared with the booming LIBs, lithium primary batteries (LPBs) own superiority in specific energy and self-discharge rate and are usually applied in special fields such as medical implantation, aerospace, and military. Widespread application in special fields also means more stringent requirements for LPBs in terms of energy density, working temperature range and shelf life. Therefore, how to obtain LPBs with high energy density, wide operational temperature range and long storage life is of great importance in future development. In view of the above, this paper reviews the latest research on LPBs in cathode, anode and electrolyte over the years, and puts forward relevant insights for LPBs, along with the intention to explore avenues for the design of LPBs components in the coming decades and promote further development in this field.

Polymer/Graphene Nanocomposite Membranes: Status and Emerging Prospects

Graphene is a unique nanocarbon nanomaterial, frequently explored with polymeric matrices for technical purposes. An indispensable application of polymer/graphene nanocomposites has been observed for membrane technology. This review highlights the design, properties, and promising features of the polymer/graphene nanomaterials and nanocomposite membranes for the pervasion and purification of toxins, pollutants, microbials, and other desired contents. The morphology, pore size, pore structure, water flux, permeation, salt rejection, and other membrane properties are examined. Graphene oxide, an important modified form of graphene, is also utilized in nanocomposite membranes. Moreover, polymer/graphene nanofibers are employed to develop high-performance membranes for methodological purposes. The adaptability of polymer/graphene nanocomposites is observed for water management and purification technologies.

Theoretical Calculations and Experiments on the Thermal Properties of Fluorinated Graphene and Its Effects on the Thermal Decomposition of Nitrate Esters

Fluorinated graphene contains F atoms with high levels of chemical activity, and the application of fluorinated graphene in energetic materials may greatly contribute to the progress of combustion reactions. However, there is a lack of research on the thermal properties of fluorinated graphene and its application on nitrate esters. In this paper, theoretical calculations and experiments were used to study the thermal properties of fluorinated graphene and its application on nitrate esters. The anaerobicity and poor thermal stability of fluorinated graphene were proved by ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations and TG-DSC experiments. The ester weakening effect of fluorinated graphene on nitroglycerin was determined via wavefunction analysis, with the greater the fluorination degree, the stronger the ester weakening effect. The existence of fluorinated graphene can significantly increase the heat dissipation of the composites, which was concluded by TG-DSC experiments and TG-DSC-MS-FTIR. The research in this article provides an important reference for the application of fluorinated graphene in energetic materials.

Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) with band alignment transformation in multi-functional devices

Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) with tunable band alignment have the potential to be benignant in the development of minimal multi-functional and controllable electronics, but they have received little attention thus far. It is crucial to characterize and control the band alignment in semiconducting vdWHs, which determines the electronic and optoelectronic properties. The future success of optoelectronic devices will require improved electronic property control techniques, such as using an external electric field or strain engineering, to change the electronic structures directly. Herein, we review heterostructures fabricated as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) as one of their constituent monolayers with other notable 2D materials that can transfer from type-II to type-III (type-III > type-II) band alignment when a biaxial strain or electric field is applied.

Gas-Phase Fluorination of g-C3N4 for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) has attracted much attention because of its potential for application in solar energy conservation. However, the photocatalytic activity of g-C₃N₄ is limited by the rapidly photogenerated carrier recombination and insufficient solar adsorption. Herein, fluorinated g-C₃N₄ (F-g-CN) nanosheets are synthesized through the reaction with F₂/N₂ mixed gas directly. The structural characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that fluorination introduces N vacancy defects, structural distortion and covalent C-F bonds in the interstitial space simultaneously, which lead to mesopore formation, vacancy generation and electronic structure modification. Therefore, the photocatalytic activity of F-g-CN for H₂ evolution under visible irradiation is 11.6 times higher than that of pristine g-C₃N₄ because of the enlarged specific area, enhanced light harvesting and accelerated photogenerated charge separation after fluorination. These results show that direct treatment with F₂ gas is a feasible and promising strategy for modulating the texture and configuration of g-C₃N₄-based semiconductors to drastically enhance the photocatalytic H₂ evolution process.

Long-term corrosion protection of styrene acrylic coatings enhanced by fluorine and nitrogen co-doped graphene oxide

Graphene materials are widely used as a physical barrier when applying anticorrosion polymer coatings due to their large surface area and layered structure. However, the electrical conductivity of intrinsic graphene can accelerate galvanic corrosion and shorten the protection period. In this work, fluorine and nitrogen co-doped graphene oxide (FNGO) was synthesized by a hydrothermal process and acted as an anticorrosion filler in waterborne styrene acrylic coatings. Styrene acrylic coatings with 0.4 wt% FNGO showed a corrosion current density that was two orders of magnitude lower than the other samples in the potential polarization test and the largest impedance modulus in the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results. The outstanding corrosion protection was attributed to the graphene acting as a physical barrier and the synergistic effect of the doped fluorine and nitrogen. In addition to the 'labyrinth effect' of the graphene matrix, the nitrogen atoms inserted in the graphene plane and fluorine atoms grafted on the graphene simultaneously adjusted the electrical properties of graphene, prohibiting electron transport between it and the styrene acrylic resin matrix. This result indicates that doped graphene oxide has great potential to increase the corrosion resistance of waterborne coatings.
