Tackling Humidity with Designer Ionic Liquid-Based Gas Sensing Soft Materials

Multifunctional Nanocomposite Yield-Stress Fluids for Printable and Stretchable Electronics

Compliant materials are crucial for stretchable electronics. Stretchable solids and gels have limitations in deformability and durability, whereas active liquids struggle to create complex devices. This study presents multifunctional yield-stress fluids as printable ink materials to construct stretchable electronic devices. Ionic nanocomposites comprise silica nanoparticles and ion liquids, while electrical nanocomposites use the natural oxidation of liquid metals to produce gallium oxide nanoflake additives. These nanocomposite inks can be printed on an elastomer substrate and stay in a solid state for easy encapsulation. However, their transition into a liquid state during stretching allows ultrahigh deformability up to the fracture strain of the elastomer. The ionic inks produce strain sensors with high stretchability and temperature sensors with high sensitivity of 7% °C-1. Smart gloves are further created by integrating these sensors with printed electrical interconnects, demonstrating bimodal detection of temperatures and hand gestures. The nanocomposite yield-stress fluids combine the desirable qualities of solids and liquids for stretchable devices and systems.

Electroenzymatic cascade reaction on a biohybrid boosts the chiral epoxidation reaction

The chiral epoxidation of styrene and its derivatives is an important transformation that has attracted considerable scientific interest in the chemical industry. Herein, we integrate enzymatic catalysis and electrocatalysis to propose a new route for the chiral epoxidation of styrene and its derivatives. Chloroperoxidase (CPO) functionalized with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (ILEMB) was loaded onto cobalt nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (CoN@CNT) to form a biohybrid (CPO-ILEMB/CoN@CNT). H2O2 species were generated in situ through a two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e-ORR) at CoN@CNT to initiate the following enzymatic epoxidation of styrene by CPO. CoN@CNT had high electroactivity for the ORR to produce H2O2 at a more positive potential, prohibiting the conversion of FeIII to FeII in the heme of CPO to maintain enzymatic activity. Meanwhile, CoN@CNT could serve as an ideal carrier for the immobilization of CPO-ILEMB. Hence, the coimmobilization of CPO-ILEMB and CoN@CNT could facilitate the diffusion of intermediate H2O2, which achieved 17 times higher efficiency than the equivalent amounts of free CPO-ILEMB in bulk solution for styrene epoxidation. Notably, an enhancement (∼45%) of chiral selectivity for the epoxidation of styrene was achieved.

3D printed mechanical robust cellulose derived liquid-free ionic conductive elastomer for multifunctional electronic devices

Ionic gel-based wearable electronic devices with robust sensing performance have gained extensive attention. However, the development of mechanical robustness, high conductivity, and customizable bio-based ionic gel for multifunctional wearable sensors still is a challenge. Herein, we first report the preparation of 3D printed cellulose derived ionic conductive elastomers (ICEs) with high mechanical toughness, high conductivity, and excellent environment stability through one-step photo-polymerization of polymerizable deep eutectic solvents. In the ICEs, carboxylate cellulose nanocrystals (C-CNCs) were used as a bio-template for the in-situ polymerization of the aniline to avoid the aggregation of polyaniline and yield a high conductivity (58.7 mS/m). More importantly, the well-defined structural design combining multiple hydrogen bonds with strong coordination bonds endows the ICEs with extremely high mechanical strength (4.4 MPa), toughness (13.33 MJ*m-3), high elasticity and excellent environment stability. Given by these features, the ICE was utilized to assemble multifunctional strain, humidity, and temperature sensors for real-time and reliable detection the human motions, respiration, and body temperature. This work provides a promising strategy for designing the new generation of strong, tough bio-based ionic gel for multifunctional wearable electronic devices.

Boosting the Sensitivity and Hysteresis of a Gel Polymer Electrolyte by Embedding SiO2 Nanoparticles and PVP for Humidity Applications

Enhancing sensitivity and hysteresis in capacitance humidity sensors is vital for precise, reliable, and consistent humidity control. This study explores this concern by incorporating polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and SiO2 nanoparticles into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based ionic liquid gel polymer electrolyte (ILGPE), studying two capacitor types: ILGPE and SiO2 composite ILGPE (CILGPE) capacitors. These novel electrolytes use ammonium acetate as a plasticiser, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide as an ionic liquid, SiO2 nanoparticles as a composite, and PVA and PVP as host polymers. Capacitors were characterised and modelled using impedance spectroscopy (IS), providing an electrophysical insight into their working principle. Sensitivity and hysteresis were evaluated within a 20-90% relative humidity (RH) range at 25 °C. The SiO2 CILGPE capacitor with PVP presented superior sensitivity and hysteresis, revealing the beneficial combination of SiO2 nanoparticles and PVP. These benefits are due to the creation of pathways that facilitate water molecule diffusion and crystallinity reduction in PVA-ILGPE. In particular, at 10 kHz, it demonstrates a calibrated capacitance sensitivity of 2660 pF/%RH and a hysteresis of 3.28 %RH. This optimised capacitor outperforms some previous humidity capacitive sensors in sensitivity while exhibiting low hysteresis.

The chloroperoxidase immobilized on porous carbon nanobowls for the detection of trichloroacetic acid by electroenzymatic synergistic catalysis

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA), as a by-product of chlorination disinfection, is a highly carcinogenic chemical. Due to the widespread use of chlorination disinfection, it is critical to detect TCA in drinking water to decrease the incidence of disease. In this work, we developed an efficient TCA biosensor via electroenzymatic synergistic catalysis. The porous carbon nanobowls (PCNB) are prepared and wrapped by an amyloid like proteins formed by phase-transitioned lysozyme (PTL-PCNB), then, chloroperoxidase (CPO) is abounding to PTL-PCNB owing to its strong adhesion. The ionic liquid of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (ILEMB) is co-immobilized on PTL-PCNB to from CPO-ILEMB@PTL-PCNB nanocomposite to assist the direct electron transfer (DET) of CPO. The PCNB plays two roles here. In addition, to increasing the conductivity, it serves as an ideal support for holding CPO; The CPO-ILEMB@PTL-PCNB nanocomposite modified electrode presents high efficiency for sensing TCA. Through electroenzymatic synergistic catalysis, a wide detection range of 33 μmol L-1 to 98 mmol L-1 can be achieved with a low detection limit of 5.9 μmol L-1, and high stability, selectivity as well as reproducibility, which ensures its potential practical applicability. This work provides a new platform for the electro-enzyme synergistic catalysis in one pot.

Species-Selective Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds by Ionic Liquid-Based Electrolyte Using Electrochemical Methods

The detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is an important topic for environmental safety and public health. However, the current commercial VOC detectors suffer from cross-sensitivity and low reproducibility. In this work, we present species-selective detection for VOCs using an electrochemical cell based on ionic liquid (IL) electrolytes with features of high selectivity and reliability. The voltammograms measured with the IL-based electrolyte absorbing different VOCs exhibited species-selective features that were extracted and classified by linear discriminant analysis (LDA). The detection system could identify as many as four types of VOCs, including methanol, ethanol, acetone, formaldehyde, and additional water. A mixture of methanol and formaldehyde was detected as well. The sample required for the VOCs classification system was 50 μL, or 1.164 mmol, on average. The response time for each VOC measurement is as fast as 24 s. The volume of VOCs such as formaldehyde in solution could also be quantified by LDA and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques, respectively. The system showed a tunable detection range for 1.6 and 16% (w/v) CH2O solution by adjusting the composition of the electrolyte. The limit of detection was as low as 1 μL. For the 1.6% CH2O solution, the linearity calibration range was determined to be from 5.30 to 53.00 μmol with a limit of detection at 0.53 μmol. The mechanisms for VOCs determination and quantification are also thoroughly discussed. It is expected that this work could provide a new insight into the concept of electrochemical detection of VOCs with machine learning analysis and be applied to both VOCs gas monitoring and fluid detection.

An Ultrastretchable Gradient Ionogel Induced by a Self-Floating Strategy for Strain Sensing

The fabrication of gradient ionogels for flexible strain sensors remains challenging because of the complex preparation procedures, and it is still difficult to prepare highly stretchable ionogels (strain > 10000%). In this study, a strategy is proposed to successfully fabricate gradient ionogels and apply them to flexible strain sensors by utilizing the self-floating character of the polysiloxane cross-linker. A gradient ionogel with ultrahigh stretchability (>14000%) is prepared via a one-step in situ photopolymerization process of the precursor with long-chain poly(dimethylsiloxane) bis(2-methyl acrylate) (PDMSMA). PDMSMA, which has a self-floating ability and excellent flexibility, induces a gradient composition distribution in the ionogel, thereby endowing the ionogel with superior stretchability and gradient changes in conductivity and adhesivity from the top to the bottom layer. Because of multiple molecular interactions, the bottom surface of the ionogel possesses good resilience and self-adhesion, whereas the top surface, which has a high PDMSMA content, shows a nonsticky performance. As a result, a singular gradient ionogel having both a sticky bottom surface and a nonsticky top surface is achieved. Furthermore, the flexible strain sensor that is created based on these gradient ionogels exhibits high sensitivity (its gauge factor reaching 5.08), a wide detection range (1-1500%), fast response times, and good linearity. Notably, the detection signal remains repeatable over 1000 uninterrupted strain cycles. The fabricated strain sensor was further utilized to monitor joint movements and physiological signals. This work provides a facile strategy for fabricating gradient ionogels and shows their application potential in the field of flexible electronics.

An Edible Humidity Indicator That Responds to Changes in Humidity Mechanically

Elevated humidity levels in medical, food, and pharmaceutical products may reduce the products' shelf life, trigger bacterial growth, and even lead to complete spoilage. In this study, we report a humidity indicator that mechanically bends and rolls itself irreversibly upon exposure to high humidity conditions. The indicator is made of two food-grade polymer films with distinct ratios of a milk protein, casein, and a plasticizer, glycerol, that are physically attached to each other. Based on the thermogravimetric analysis and microstructural characterization, we hypothesize that the bending mechanism is a result of hygroscopic swelling and consequent counter diffusion of water and glycerol. Guided by this mechanism, we demonstrate that the rolling behavior, including response time and final curvature, can be tuned by the geometric dimensions of the indicator. As the proposed indicator is made of food-grade ingredients, it can be placed directly in contact with perishable products to report exposure to undesirable humidity inside the package, without the risk of contaminating the product or causing oral toxicity in case of accidental digestion, features that commercial inedible electronic and chemo-chromatic sensors cannot provide presently.

Heads or tails: investigating the effects of amphiphile features on the distortion of chiral nematic liquid crystal droplets

Liquid crystal-based sensing has fast become a growing field, harnessing the sensitivity of liquid crystals to their surroundings to provide information about the analytes present, including surface-active amphiphiles such as biological lipids. Amphiphiles can impart ordering to a liquid crystal and, in the case of chiral nematic liquid crystals (CLCs), distort the helical texture. The cause and degree to which this distortion occurs is not fully clear. In this work, the effects of different amphiphiles on the final colour textures as well as the pitch of chiral nematic liquid crystals are investigated. We find that the tails of amphiphiles and their orientation play a more important role in determining the final distortions of the liquid crystal by the direct interactions they have with the host, whereas the headgroups do not play a significant role in affecting these distortions. Our findings may find implications in designing CLC-based biosensors, where the tails will likely have more impact on the CLC response, while the headgroups will remain available for further functionalization without having significant effects on the signal readout.

Effect of Polymer Hydrophobicity in the Performance of Hybrid Gel Gas Sensors for E-Noses

Relative humidity (RH) is a common interferent in chemical gas sensors, influencing their baselines and sensitivity, which can limit the performance of e-nose systems. Tuning the composition of the sensing materials is a possible strategy to control the impact of RH in gas sensors. Hybrid gel materials used as gas sensors contain self-assembled droplets of ionic liquid and liquid crystal molecules encapsulated in a polymeric matrix. In this work, we assessed the effect of the matrix hydrophobic properties in the performance of hybrid gel materials for VOC sensing in humid conditions (50% RH). We used two different polymers, the hydrophobic PDMS and the hydrophilic bovine gelatin, as polymeric matrices in hybrid gel materials containing imidazolium-based ionic liquids, [BMIM][Cl] and [BMIM][DCA], and the thermotropic liquid crystal 5CB. Better accuracy of VOC prediction is obtained for the hybrid gels composed of a PDMS matrix combined with the [BMIM][Cl] ionic liquid, and the use of this hydrophobic matrix reduces the effect of humidity on the sensing performance when compared to the gelatin counterpart. VOCs interact with all the moieties of the hybrid gel multicomponent system; thus, VOC correct classification depends not only on the polymeric matrix used, but also on the IL selected, which seems to be key to achieve VOCs discrimination at 50% RH. Thus, hybrid gels' tunable formulation offers the potential for designing complementary sensors for e-nose systems operable under different RH conditions.

Digital health: trends, opportunities and challenges in medical devices, pharma and bio-technology

Digital health interventions refer to the use of digital technology and connected devices to improve health outcomes and healthcare delivery. This includes telemedicine, electronic health records, wearable devices, mobile health applications, and other forms of digital health technology. To this end, several research and developmental activities in various fields are gaining momentum. For instance, in the medical devices sector, several smart biomedical materials and medical devices that are digitally enabled are rapidly being developed and introduced into clinical settings. In the pharma and allied sectors, digital health-focused technologies are widely being used through various stages of drug development, viz. computer-aided drug design, computational modeling for predictive toxicology, and big data analytics for clinical trial management. In the biotechnology and bioengineering fields, investigations are rapidly growing focus on digital health, such as omics biology, synthetic biology, systems biology, big data and personalized medicine. Though digital health-focused innovations are expanding the horizons of health in diverse ways, here the development in the fields of medical devices, pharmaceutical technologies and biotech sectors, with emphasis on trends, opportunities and challenges are reviewed. A perspective on the use of digital health in the Indian context is also included.

Moisture-Insensitive and Highly Selective Detection of NO2 by Ion-in-Conjugation Covalent Organic Frameworks

As a common toxic gas, nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) seriously threatens the environment and human respiratory system even at part per billion (ppb) level. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have gained widespread attention in sensing applications because of the benefits of designability, environmental stability, and a large number of active sites. However, the competitive adsorption of water molecules and the target gas molecules at room temperature as well as the weak interaction between COFs and gas molecules hinder their practical applications. Here, we introduce ion-in-conjugation (IIC) into a covalent organic framework (COF) by preparing a condensate of squaraine (SA) with 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) to form a mesoporous macrocyclic material (SA-TAPB). Layers of SA-TAPB, drop cast onto interdigitated Ag-Pd alloy electrodes, show a statistically significant conductivity response to NO₂ at concentrations as low as 30 ppb and a theoretical detection limit of 10.9 ppb. The sensor displays a lower sensitivity to variations in humidity when operated at 80 °C compared to room temperature. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the main adsorption site of NO₂ is dual hydrogen bonds formed between two amide hydrogen atoms of SA-TAPB and the NO₂ molecule. Gas adsorption experiments revealed that SA-TAPB has the largest adsorption capacity of NO₂ versus other interference gases, which were responsible for the excellent selectivity toward NO₂.

Materials for Chemical Sensing: A Comprehensive Review on the Recent Advances and Outlook Using Ionic Liquids, Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs), and MOF-Based Composites

The ability to measure and monitor the concentration of specific chemical and/or gaseous species (i.e., “analytes”) is the main requirement in many fields, including industrial processes, medical applications, and workplace safety management. As a consequence, several kinds of sensors have been developed in the modern era according to some practical guidelines that regard the characteristics of the active (sensing) materials on which the sensor devices are based. These characteristics include the cost-effectiveness of the materials’ manufacturing, the sensitivity to analytes, the material stability, and the possibility of exploiting them for low-cost and portable devices. Consequently, many gas sensors employ well-defined transduction methods, the most popular being the oxidation (or reduction) of the analyte in an electrochemical reactor, optical techniques, and chemiresistive responses to gas adsorption. In recent years, many of the efforts devoted to improving these methods have been directed towards the use of certain classes of specific materials. In particular, ionic liquids have been employed as electrolytes of exceptional properties for the preparation of amperometric gas sensors, while metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are used as highly porous and reactive materials which can be employed, in pure form or as a component of MOF-based functional composites, as active materials of chemiresistive or optical sensors. Here, we report on the most recent developments relative to the use of these classes of materials in chemical sensing. We discuss the main features of these materials and the reasons why they are considered interesting in the field of chemical sensors. Subsequently, we review some of the technological and scientific results published in the span of the last six years that we consider among the most interesting and useful ones for expanding the awareness on future trends in chemical sensing. Finally, we discuss the prospects for the use of these materials and the factors involved in their possible use for new generations of sensor devices.

Synergy between silk fibroin and ionic liquids for active gas-sensing materials

Silk fibroin is a biobased material with excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties, but its use in bioelectronics is hampered by the difficult dissolution and low intrinsic conductivity. Some ionic liquids are known to dissolve fibroin but removed after fibroin processing. However, ionic liquids and fibroin can cooperatively give rise to functional materials, and there are untapped opportunities in this combination. The dissolution of fibroin, followed by gelation, in designer ionic liquids from the imidazolium chloride family with varied alkyl chain lengths (2-10 carbons) is shown here. The alkyl chain length of the anion has a large impact on fibroin secondary structure which adopts unconventional arrangements, yielding robust gels with distinct hierarchical organization. Furthermore, and due to their remarkable air-stability and ionic conductivity, fibroin ionogels are exploited as active electrical gas sensors in an electronic nose revealing the unravelled possibilities of fibroin in soft and flexible electronics.
