Obstructed Surface States as the Descriptor for Predicting Catalytic Active Sites in Inorganic Crystalline Materials

Optimizing Surface State Electrons of Topological Semi-Metal by Atomic Doping for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Topological materials carrying topological surface states (TSSs) have extraordinary carrier mobility and robustness, which provide a new platform for searching for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. However, the majority of these TSSs originate from the sp band of topological quantum catalysts rather than the d band. Here, based on the density functional theory calculation, it is reported a topological semimetal Pd3Sn carrying TSSs mainly derived from d orbital and proposed that optimizing surface state electrons of Pd3Sn by introduction heteroatoms (Ni) can promote hybridization between hydrogen atoms and electrons, thereby reducing the Gibbs free energy (ΔGH) of adsorbed hydrogen and improving its HER performance. Moreover, this is well verified by electrocatalytic experiment results, the Ni-doped Pd3Sn (Ni0.1Pd2.9Sn) show much lower overpotential (-29 mV vs RHE) and Tafel slope (17 mV dec-1) than Pd3Sn (-39 mV vs RHE, 25 mV dec-1) at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Significantly, the Ni0.1Pd2.9Sn nanoparticles exhibit excellent stability for HER. The electrocatalytic activity of Ni0.1Pd2.9Sn nanoparticles is superior to that of commercial Pt. This work provides an accurate guide for manipulating surface state electrons to improve the HER performance of catalysts.

Polypyrrole regulates Active Sites in Co-based Catalyst in Direct Borohydride Fuel Cells

Direct borohydride fuel cells (DBFCs) convert borohydride (NaBH4) chemical energy into clean electricity. However, catalytic active site deactivation in NaBH4 solution limits their performance and stability. We propose a strategy to regulate active sites in Co-based catalysts using polypyrrole modification (Co-PX catalyst) to enhance electrochemical borohydride oxidation reaction (eBOR). As an anode catalyst, the synthesized Co-PX catalyst exhibits excellent eBOR performance in DBFCs, with current density of 280 mA ⋅ cm-2 and power density of 151 mW ⋅ cm-2, nearly twice that of the unmodified catalyst. The Co-PX catalyst shows no degradation after 120-hour operation, unlike the rapidly degrading control. In-situ electrochemical attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIRS) and density functional theory (DFT) suggest that polypyrrole-modified carbon support regulate the charge distribution, increasing oxidation state and optimizing adsorption/desorption of intermediates. A possible reaction pathway is proposed. This work presents a promising strategy for efficient polymer-modulated catalysts in advanced DBFCs.

Monolayer Cu2Se: a topological catalysis in CO2electroreduction

This investigation provides a comprehensive exploration into the intricate interplay between topological surface states (TSS) and catalytic performance in two-dimensional (2D) materials, with specific emphasis on monolayer Cu2Se. Leveraging the unique characteristics of nodal loop semimetals (NLSMs), we delve into the precise influence of TSS on catalytic activity, particularly in the domain of CO2electrochemical reduction. Our findings illuminate the central role played by these TSS, arising from the underlying NLSM framework, in sculpting catalytic efficiency. The length of these surface states emerges as a critical determinant of surface density of states (DOSs), a fundamental factor governing catalytic behavior. Extension of these surface states correlates with heightened surface DOSs, yielding lower Gibbs free energies and consequently enhancing catalytic performance, particularly in the electrochemical reduction of CO2. Moreover, we underscore the profound importance of preserving symmetries that protect the nodal loop. The disruption of these symmetries is found to result in a significant degradation of catalytic efficacy, underscoring the paramount significance of topological features in facilitating catalytic processes. Therefore, this study not only elucidates the fundamental role of TSS in dictating the catalytic performance of topological 2D materials but also paves the way for harnessing these unique attributes to drive sustainable and highly efficient catalysis across a diverse spectrum of chemical processes.

Spin-resolved topology and partial axion angles in three-dimensional insulators

Symmetry-protected topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) have primarily been characterized by their gapless boundary states. However, in time-reversal- ([Formula: see text]-) invariant (helical) 3D TCIs-termed higher-order TCIs (HOTIs)-the boundary signatures can manifest as a sample-dependent network of 1D hinge states. We here introduce nested spin-resolved Wilson loops and layer constructions as tools to characterize the intrinsic bulk topological properties of spinful 3D insulators. We discover that helical HOTIs realize one of three spin-resolved phases with distinct responses that are quantitatively robust to large deformations of the bulk spin-orbital texture: 3D quantum spin Hall insulators (QSHIs), "spin-Weyl" semimetals, and [Formula: see text]-doubled axion insulator (T-DAXI) states with nontrivial partial axion angles indicative of a 3D spin-magnetoelectric bulk response and half-quantized 2D TI surface states originating from a partial parity anomaly. Using ab-initio calculations, we demonstrate that β-MoTe2 realizes a spin-Weyl state and that α-BiBr hosts both 3D QSHI and T-DAXI regimes.

Drumhead surface states promoted hydrogen evolution reactions in type-II nodal-line topological catalyst Mg3Bi2

An excellent catalyst generally meets three indicators: high electron mobility, high surface density of states and low Gibbs free energy (ΔG) [H. Luo et al. Nat. Rev. Phys., 2022, 4, 611-624]. Recent studies have confirmed that topological materials exhibit more advantages than conventional precious metals with regard to the above-mentioned indicators. Herein, based on DFT calculations and symmetry analysis, we discovered for the first time that the topological surface states of Mg3Bi2 with a Kagome lattice promote hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). In particular, there exists a snake-like type-II nodal loop (NL), located on kz = 0 plane in Mg3Bi2. Besides, the NL forms a topologically protected drumhead surface state on the (001) surface. It was found that the ΔG (0.176 eV) value of the (001) surface is comparable to that of the precious metal Pt. Then, through hole doping and strain regulation, it was found that the catalytic activity of Mg3Bi2 is closely related to the drumhead surface state formed by NL. With the above-mentioned results, this study not only provides a promising candidate material for hydrogen electrolysis, but also deepens our understanding of the dominant factors of NL semimetals for the catalytic activity.

Spectroscopic signature of obstructed surface states in SrIn2P2

The century-long development of surface sciences has witnessed the discoveries of a variety of quantum states. In the recently proposed "obstructed atomic insulators", symmetric charges are pinned at virtual sites where no real atoms reside. The cleavage through these sites could lead to a set of obstructed surface states with partial electronic occupation. Here, utilizing scanning tunneling microscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we observe spectroscopic signature of obstructed surface states in SrIn2P2. We find that a pair of surface states that are originated from the pristine obstructed surface states split in energy by a unique surface reconstruction. The upper branch is marked with a striking differential conductance peak followed by negative differential conductance, signaling its localized nature, while the lower branch is found to be highly dispersive. This pair of surface states is in consistency with our calculational results. Our finding not only demonstrates a surface quantum state induced by a new type of bulk-boundary correspondence, but also provides a platform for exploring efficient catalysts and related surface engineering.

Nontrivial Topological Surface States in Ru3 Sn7 toward Wide pH-Range Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Nontrivial topological surface states (TSSs), which possess extraordinary carrier mobility and are protected by the bulk symmetry, have emerged as an innovative platform to search for efficient electrocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, a Sn-based nontrivial metal Ru₃ Sn₇ is prepared using electrical arc melting method. The results indicate that the (001) crystal family of Ru₃ Sn₇ possesses nontrivial TSSs with linear dispersion relation and large nontrivial energy window. Experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that nontrivial TSSs of Ru₃ Sn₇ can significantly boost charge transfer kinetics and optimize adsorption of hydrogen intermediates due to bulk symmetry-protected band structures. As expected, nontrivial Ru₃ Sn₇ exhibits superior HER activity to Ru, Pt/C, and trivial counterparts (e.g., Ru₂ Sn₃ , IrSn₂ , and Rh₃ Sn₂ ) with higher ratios of noble metals. Furthermore, the wide pH-range activity of topologically nontrivial Ru₃ Sn₇ implies the robustness of its TSSs against pH variation during the HER. These findings provide a promising approach to the rational design of topologically nontrivial metals as highly efficient electrocatalysts.

Observation of a robust and active catalyst for hydrogen evolution under high current densities

Despite the fruitful achievements in the development of hydrogen production catalysts with record-breaking performances, there is still a lack of durable catalysts that could work under large current densities (>1000 mA cm^-2). Here, we investigated the catalytic behaviors of Sr₂RuO₄ bulk single crystals. This crystal has demonstrated remarkable activities under the current density of 1000 mA cm^-2, which require overpotentials of 182 and 278 mV in 0.5 M H₂SO₄ and 1 M KOH electrolytes, respectively. These materials are stable for 56 days of continuous testing at a high current density of above 1000 mA cm^-2 and then under operating temperatures of 70 °C. The in-situ formation of ferromagnetic Ru clusters at the crystal surface is observed, endowing the single-crystal catalyst with low charge transfer resistance and high wettability for rapid gas bubble removal. These experiments exemplify the potential of designing HER catalysts that work under industrial-scale current density.

Orbital Shift-Induced Boundary Obstructed Topological Materials with a Large Energy Gap

Boundary obstructed topological phases caused by Wannier orbital shift between ordinary atomic sites are proposed, which, however, cannot be indicated by symmetry eigenvalues at high symmetry momenta (symmetry indicators) in bulk. On the open boundary, Wannier charge centers can shift to different atoms from those in bulk, leading to in-gap surface states, higher-order hinge states or corner states. To demonstrate such orbital shift-induced boundary obstructed topological insulators, eight material candidates are predicted, all of which are overlooked in the present topological databases. Metallic surface states, hinge states, or corner states cover the large bulk energy gap (e.g., more than 1 eV in TlGaTe2 ) at related boundary, which are ready for experimental detection. Additionally, these materials are also fragile topological insulators with hourglass-like surface states.
