Broadband Emission Origin in Metal Halide Perovskites: Are Self-Trapped Excitons or Ions?

Achieving Near-Unity Red Light Photoluminescence in Antimony Halide Crystals via Polyhedron Regulation

Exploration of efficient red emitting antimony hybrid halide with large Stokes shift and zero self-absorption is highly desirable due to its enormous potential for applications in solid light emitting, and active optical waveguides. However, it is still challenging and rarely reported. Herein, a series of (TMS)2SbCl5 (TMS=triphenylsulfonium cation) crystals have been prepared with diverse [SbCl5]2- configurations and distinctive emission color. Among them, cubic-phase (TMS)2SbCl5 shows bright red emission with a large Stokes shift of 312 nm. In contrast, monoclinic and orthorhombic (TMS)2SbCl5 crystals deliver efficient yellow and orange emission, respectively. Comprehensive structural investigations reveal that larger Stokes shift and longer-wavelength emission of cubic (TMS)2SbCl5 can be attributed to the larger lattice volume and longer Sb⋅⋅⋅Sb distance, which favor sufficient structural aberration freedom at excited states. Together with robust stability, (TMS)2SbCl5 crystal family has been applied as optical waveguide with ultralow loss coefficient of 3.67 ⋅ 10-4 dB μm-1, and shows superior performance in white-light emission and anti-counterfeiting. In short, our study provides a novel and fundamental perspective to structure-property-application relationship of antimony hybrid halides, which will contribute to future rational design of high-performance emissive metal halides.

Advanced Optical Information Encryption Enabled by Polychromatic and Stimuli-Responsive Luminescence of Sb-Doped Double Perovskites

The smart materials with multi-color and stimuli-responsive luminescence are very promising for next generation of optical information encryption and anti-counterfeiting, but these materials are still scarce. Herein, a multi-level information encryption strategy is developed based on the polychromatic emission of Sb-doped double perovskite powders (SDPPs). Cs2NaInCl6:Sb, Cs2KInCl6:Sb, and Cs2AgInCl6:Sb synthesized through coprecipitation methods exhibit broadband emissions with bright blue, cyan, and orange colors, respectively. The information transmitted by specific SDPP is encrypted when different SDPPs are mixed. The confidential information can be decrypted by selecting the corresponding narrowband filter. Then, an encrypted quick response (QR) code with improved security is demonstrated based on this multi-channel selection strategy. Moreover, the three types of SDPPs exhibit three different water-triggered luminescence switching behaviors. The confidential information represented by Cs2NaInCl6:Sb can be erased/recovered through a simple water spray/drying. Whereas, the information collected from the green channel is permanently erased by moisture, which fundamentally avoids information leakage. Therefore, different encryption schemes can be designed to meet a variety of encryption requirements. The multicolor and stimuli-responsive luminescence greatly enrich the flexibility of optical information encryption, which leaps the level of security and confidentiality.

Optoelectronic insights of lead-free layered halide perovskites

Two-dimensional organic-inorganic halide perovskites have emerged as promising candidates for a multitude of optoelectronic technologies, owing to their versatile structure and electronic properties. The optical and electronic properties are harmoniously integrated with both the inorganic metal halide octahedral slab, and the organic spacer layer. The inorganic octahedral layers can also assemble into periodically stacked nanoplatelets, which are interconnected by the organic ammonium cation, resulting in the formation of a superlattice or superstructure. In this perspective, we explore the structural, electronic, and optical properties of lead-free hybrid halides, and the layered halide perovskite single crystals and nanostructures, expanding our understanding of the diverse applications enabled by these versatile structures. The optical properties of the layered halide perovskite single crystals and superlattices are a function of the organic spacer layer thickness, the metal center with either divalent or a combination of monovalent and trivalent cations, and the halide composition. The distinct absorption and emission features are guided by the structural deformation, electron-phonon coupling, and the polaronic effect. Among the diverse optoelectronic possibilities, we have focused on the photodetection capability of layered halide perovskite single crystals, and elucidated the descriptors such as excitonic band gap, effective mass, carrier mobility, Rashba splitting, and the spin texture that decides the direct component of the optical transitions.

Transient Photoinduced Pb2+ Disproportionation for Exciton Self-Trapping and Broadband Emission in Low-Dimensional Lead Halide Perovskites

Low-dimensional lead halide perovskites with broadband emission hold great promise for single-component white-light-emitting (WLE) devices. The origin of their broadband emission has been commonly attributed to self-trapped excitons (STEs) composed of localized electronic polarization with a distorted lattice. Unfortunately, the exact electronic and structural nature of the STE species in these WLE materials remains elusive, hindering the rational design of high-efficiency WLE materials. In this study, by combining ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy and ab initio calculations, we uncover surprisingly similar STE features in two prototypical low dimensional WLE perovskite single crystals: 1D (DMEDA)PbBr4 and 2D (EDBE)PbBr4, despite of their different dimensionalities. Photoexcited excitons rapidly localize to intrinsic STEs within ∼250 fs, contributing to the white light emission. Crucially, STEs in both systems exhibit characteristic absorption features akin to those of Pb+ and Pb3+. Further atomic level theoretical simulations confirm photoexcited electrons and holes are localized on the Pb2+ site to form Pb+- and Pb3+-like species, resembling transient photoinduced Pb2+ disproportionation. This study provides conclusive evidence on the key excited state species for exciton self-trapping and broadband emission in low dimensional lead halide WLE perovskites and paves the way for the rational design of high-efficiency WLE materials.

Multi-stimuli-responsive luminescence enabled by crown ether anchored chiral antimony halide phosphors

Stimuli-responsive optical materials have provided a powerful impetus for the development of intelligent optoelectronic devices. The family of organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides, distinguished by their structural diversity, presents a prospective platform for the advancement of stimuli-responsive optical materials. Here, we have employed a crown ether to anchor the A-site cation of a chiral antimony halide, enabling convenient control and modulation of its photophysical properties. The chirality-dependent asymmetric lattice distortion of inorganic skeletons assisted by a crown ether promotes the formation of self-trapped excitons (STEs), leading to a high photoluminescence quantum yield of over 85%, concomitant with the effective circularly polarized luminescence. The antimony halide enantiomers showcase highly sensitive stimuli-responsive luminescent behaviours towards excitation wavelength and temperature simultaneously, exhibiting a versatile reversible colour switching capability from blue to white and further to orange. In situ temperature-dependent luminescence spectra, time-resolved luminescence spectra and theoretical calculations reveal that the multi-stimuli-responsive luminescent behaviours stem from distinct STEs within zero-dimensional lattices. By virtue of the inherent flexibility and adaptability, these chiral antimony chlorides have promising prospects for future applications in cutting-edge fields such as multifunctional illumination technologies and intelligent sensing devices.

A 0D hybrid lead-free halide with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield toward multifunctional optoelectronic applications

Zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid metal halides have emerged as highly efficient luminescent materials, but integrated multifunction in a structural platform remains a significant challenge. Herein, a new hybrid 0D indium halide of (Im-BDMPA)InCl6·H2O was designed as a highly efficient luminescent emitter and X-ray scintillator toward multiple optoelectronic applications. Specifically, it displays strong broadband yellow light emission with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) through Sb3+ doping, acting as a down-conversion phosphor to fabricate high-performance white light emitting diodes (WLEDs). Benefiting from the high PLQY and negligible self-absorption characteristics, this halide exhibits extraordinary X-ray scintillation performance with a high light yield of 55 320 photons per MeV, which represents a new scintillator in 0D hybrid indium halides. Further combined merits of a low detection limit (0.0853 μGyair s-1), ultra-high spatial resolution of 17.25 lp per mm and negligible afterglow time (0.48 ms) demonstrate its excellent application prospects in X-ray imaging. In addition, this 0D halide also exhibits reversible luminescence off-on switching toward tribromomethane (TBM) but fails in any other organic solvents with an ultra-low detection limit of 0.1 ppm, acting as a perfect real-time fluorescent probe to detect TBM with ultrahigh sensitivity, selectivity and repeatability. Therefore, this work highlights the multiple optoelectronic applications of 0D hybrid lead-free halides in white LEDs, X-ray scintillation, fluorescence sensors, etc.

Luminescence and Degeneration Mechanism of Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes and Strategies for Improving Device Performance

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) can be a promising technology for next-generation display and lighting applications due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. However, a systematical overview of luminescence and degradation mechanism of perovskite materials and PeLEDs is lacking. Therefore, it is crucial to fully understand these mechanisms and further improve device performances. In this work, the fundamental photophysical processes of perovskite materials, electroluminescence mechanism of PeLEDs including carrier kinetics and efficiency roll-off as well as device degradation mechanism are discussed in detail. In addition, the strategies to improve device performances are summarized, including optimization of photoluminescence quantum yield, charge injection and recombination, and light outcoupling efficiency. It is hoped that this work can provide guidance for future development of PeLEDs and ultimately realize industrial applications.
