Abstract
Sodium thiosulfate was used as the sulfur source that reacts with anhydrides to generate acyl-Bunte salts, after which a reaction with phenols was induced. This protocol can be applied for the site-selective acylation of the phenolic hydroxyl group in the presence of other alcoholic groups. The advantages of this acylation method are operational simplicity, high efficiency, and the use of odorless reagents with low toxicity.

Abstract
Oleuropein is the most important phenolic compound present in olive cultivars, but it is scarcely present in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) due to its high hydrophilicity and degradability. Thus, a set of oleuropein aglycone derivatives were synthesized by transacetylation under mild conditions with the aim of circumventing these drawbacks and making the active moiety in oleuropein suitable to be added to food fats. The oleuropein aglycone (closed ring form) is obtained by hydrolyzing oleuropein using Lewis acid catalysis. Then, the permeation profiles as well as the antioxidant capacity of the oleuropein aglycone derivatives were evaluated by ORAC, DPPH assays and by ROS formation using the SH-SY5Y cell line. The biological activities of the obtained compounds exhibited a dependence on their level of lipophilicity.

Abstract
Dysprosium(III) trifluoromethanesulfonate-catalyzed per-O-acetylation and regioselective anomeric de-O-acetylation of carbohydrates can be tuned by adjusting the reaction medium. In this study, the per-O-acetylation of unprotected sugars by using a near-stoichiometric amount of acetic anhydride under solvent-free conditions resulted in the exclusive formation of acetylated saccharides as anomeric mixtures, whereas anomeric de-O-acetylation in methanol resulted in a moderate-to-excellent yield. Reactions with various unprotected monosaccharides or disaccharides followed by a semi-one-pot sequential conversion into the corresponding acetylated glycosyl hemiacetal also resulted in high yields. Furthermore, the obtained hemiacetals could be successfully transformed into trichloroimidates after Dy(OTf)3 -catalyzed glycosylation.

Abstract
The effect of dysprosium(III) triflate on macrolactonization reactions to form depsipeptides using MNBA (Shiina's reagent) is reported. Improved yields were obtained for the formation of 16-membered depsipeptides using lanthanide triflate additives. The use of a macrocyclization strategy permits the use of a semiautomated solid-phase synthesis approach for the rapid synthesis of analogues of the antibacterial A54556 acyldepsipeptides in only two physical operations, requiring only final product purification after cyclization.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds present in extra virgin olive oil have attracted considerable recent attention. Many of them, show specific anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activities. In this work we describe the biomimetic synthesis of 3,4-DHPEA-EDA [2-(3,4-hydroxyphenyl) ethyl (3S,4E)-4-formyl-3-(2-oxoethyl)hex-4-enoate], starting from natural demethyloleuropein present in olive tissues. A comparison between 3,4-DHPEA-EDA (6) and oleuropein (1), oleuropein aglycone (4) and hydroxytyrosol ORACFL values was undertaken.

Abstract
Several derivatives of cholesterol and other 3β-hydroxy-Δ(5)-steroids were prepared and tested as sterol donors in electrochemical reactions with sugar alcohols. The reactions afforded glycoconjugates with sugar linked to a steroid moiety by an ether bond. Readily available sterol diphenylphosphates yielding up to 54% of the desired glycoconjugate were found to be the best sterol donors.

Abstract
The role of the nonreacting phosphodianion group of 1-deoxy-d-xylulose-5-phosphate (DXP) in catalysis by DXP reductoisomerase (DXR) was investigated for the reaction of the "substrate in pieces". The truncated substrate 1-deoxy-l-erythrulose is converted by DXR to 2-C-methylglycerol with a kcat/Km that is 10(6)-fold lower than that for DXP. Phosphite dianion was found to be a nonessential activator, providing 3.2 kcal/mol of transition state stabilization for the truncated substrate. These results implicate a phosphate-driven conformational change involving loop closure over the DXR active site to generate an environment poised for catalysis.

Abstract
A high-throughput screening system for homogeneous catalyst discovery has been developed by integrating a continuous-flow capillary-based microreactor with ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC) for fast online analysis. Reactions are conducted in distinct and stable zones in a flow stream that allows for time and temperature regulation. UHPLC detection at high temperature allows high throughput online determination of substrate, product, and byproduct concentrations. We evaluated the efficacies of a series of soluble acid catalysts for an intramolecular Friedel-Crafts addition into an acyliminium ion intermediate within 1 day and with minimal material investment. The effects of catalyst loading, reaction time, and reaction temperature were also screened. This system exhibited high reproducibility for high-throughput catalyst screening and allowed several acid catalysts for the reaction to be identified. Major side products from the reactions were determined through off-line mass spectrometric detection. Er(OTf)(3), the catalyst that showed optimal efficiency in the screening, was shown to be effective at promoting the cyclization reaction on a preparative scale.

Abstract
Erbium(iii) chloride is a powerful catalyst for the acylation of alcohols and phenols. The reaction works well for a large variety of simple and functionalized substrates by using different kinds of acidic anhydrides (Ac2O, (EtCO)2O, (PriCO)2O, (ButCO)2O, and (CF3CO)2), without isomerization of chiral centres. Moreover, the catalyst can be easily recycled and reused without significant loss of activity.

Abstract
Er(OTf)3 is proposed as new efficient Lewis acid catalyst in a mild deprotection protocol of benzylidene derivatives. In a modified procedure, where acetic anhydride is used as the reaction solvent, the simultaneous cleavage of the benzylidene acetal and the peracetylation of the substrates is obtained in quantitative yields and very short reaction times.
