Abstract
This review reports the achievements in copper(II) triflate-catalyzed processes concerning the multicomponent reactions, applied to the synthesis of acyclic and cyclic compounds. In particular, for the heteropolycyclic systems mechanistic insights were outlined as well as cycloaddition and aza-Diels-Alder reactions were included. These strategies have gained attention due to their highly atom- and step-economy, one-step multi-bond forming, mild reaction conditions, low cost and easy handling.

Abstract
A light-driven dual and ternary catalytic aza-Wacker protocol for the construction of 3-pyrrolines by partially disulfide-assisted selenium-π-acid multicatalysis is reported. A structurally diverse array of sulfonamides possessing homopolar mono-, di- and trisubstituted olefinic double bonds is selectively converted to the corresponding 3-pyrrolines in up to 95 % isolated yield and with good functional group tolerance. Advanced electrochemical mechanistic investigations of the protocol suggest a dual role of the disulfide co-catalyst. On the one hand, the disulfide serves as an electron hole shuttle between the excited photoredox catalyst and the selenium co-catalyst. On the other hand, the sulfur species engages in the final, product releasing step of the catalytic cycle by accelerating the β-elimination of the selenium moiety, which was found in many cases to lead to considerably improved product yields.

Abstract
A new straightforward approach to 1-aryl-2-aminopropanes using easily accessible substrates has been developed. Simple allyl alcohol is shown to be an ideal synthetic equivalent of the C3 propane-1,2-diylium bis-cation synthon in three-component cascade reactions with arenes and sulfonamide nucleophiles to regioselectively afford 1-aryl-2-aminopropanes. The reaction is catalyzed by Cu(OTf)2 and is expected to involve a Friedel-Crafts-type allylation of the arene, followed by hydroamination.

Abstract
A facile and diversity-oriented approach has been developed for the synthesis of pyrrole-, pyridine-, or azepine-appended (het)aryl aminoamides via the N-allylation/homoallylation-ring-closing metathesis (RCM) strategy. Microwave condition was efficiently utilized for N-allylation of (het)aryl aminoamides to synthesize di-, tri-, and tetra-allyl/homoallylated RCM substrates in good yields. All of the RCM substrates were successfully converted to respective pyrroles 6a-h, 13a,b, 15a,b, pyridines 11a-d, 13c, and azepines 7a,b via RCM. All of the five-, six-, and seven-membered N-heterocycles were synthesized in shorter reaction times with excellent yields without isomerization products. A one-pot reaction to synthesize compounds 6a and 6b without isolating corresponding RCM substrates was achieved successfully. The synthetic utility of the compound 6b has been demonstrated by synthesizing biaryl derivatives 17a,b under the microwave Suzuki coupling reaction condition.

Abstract
Many cancers have developed resistance to 5-FU, due to removal by the enzyme uracil-DNA glycosylase (UDG), a type of base excision repair enzyme (BER) that can excise uracil and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) from DNA. However, the development of UDG inhibitor screening methods, especially for the rapid and efficient screening of natural product/natural product-like compounds, is still limited so far. We developed herein a robust time-resolved photoluminescence method for screening UDG inhibitors, which could significantly improve sensitivity over the screening method based on the conventional steady-state spectroscopy, reducing the substantial fluorescence background interference. As a proof-of-concept, two potential UDG inhibitors were identified from a database of natural products and approved drugs. Co-treatment of these two compounds with 5-FU showed synergistic cytotoxicity, providing the basis for treating drug-resistant cancers. Overall, this method provides an avenue for the rapid screening of small molecule regulators of other BER enzyme activities that can avoid false negatives arising from the background fluorescence. The discovery of UDG inhibitors against prostate cancer by using a robust photoluminescence screening assay that can avoid false negatives arising from the background fluorescence.![]()

Abstract
The five-membered, nitrogen-containing pyrroline ring is a privileged structure. This ring is present in many bioactive compounds from natural sources. Pyrrolines-the dihydro derivatives of pyrroles-have three structural isomer classes, depending on the location of the double bond: 1-pyrrolines (3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrroles), 2-pyrrolines (2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroles) and 3-pyrrolines (2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrroles). This review aims to describe the latest advances for the synthesis of pyrrolines by transition metal-catalyzed cyclizations. Only reactions in which the pyrroline ring is formed by metal promotion are described. Transformations of the pyrroline ring in other heterocycles, and the structural manipulations of the pyrroline itself are not discussed. The review is organized into three parts, each covering the metal-mediated synthesis of the three pyrroline isomers. Each part is subdivided according to the metal involved, and concludes with a brief description of notable biological activities within the class.

Abstract
Among the best-performing homogeneous catalysts for the direct amination of activated secondary alcohols with electron-poor amine derivatives, metal triflates, such as aluminum triflate, Al(OTf)3 , stand out. Herein we report the extension of this reaction to electron-rich amines and activated primary alcohols. We provide detailed insight into the structure and reactivity of the catalyst under working conditions in both nitromethane and toluene solvent, through experiment (cyclic voltammetry, conductimetry, NMR spectroscopy), and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. Competition between aniline and benzyl alcohol for Al in the two solvents explains the different reactivities. The catalyst structures predicted from the DFT calculations were validated by the experiments. Whereas a SN 1-type mechanism was found to be active in nitromethane, we propose a SN 2 mechanism in toluene to rationalize the much higher selectivity observed when using this solvent. Also, unlike what is commonly assumed in homogeneous catalysis, we show that different active species may be active instead of only one.

Abstract
A synthetic method to prepare (E)-(pyridin-2-yl)enones and (E)-(quinolin-8-yl)enones that relies on the respective copper(I)-catalyzed formal cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reaction of 2-methylpyridine and 8-methylquinoline with methyl ketones has been discovered. The mechanism was delineated to follow a pathway involving oxidation of the N-heterocycle to its corresponding aldehyde adduct prior to reaction with the methyl ketone. The versatility and substrate dependent divergence in the reactivity of the copper-mediated CDC strategy was exemplified by its application to the synthesis of N-(quinolin-8-ylmethyl)amide and N-(quinolin-8-ylmethyl)aniline adducts on switching the cross-coupling partner to benzamides or an aniline derivative.

Abstract
This review covers uses of bismuth catalysts since 2005 with a special emphasis on the emerging applications of such catalysts. Low toxicity, low catalytic loading, synergistic effects with other catalysts, and some hydrocompatibility properties confer to bismuth salts major advantages. The expanding activity in the field clearly highlights the growing potential of bismuth catalysts. The article is not a comprehensive review on bismuth catalysis but a selection of its most promising uses in challenging synthetic transformations.
