Abstract
The hydrogenation of nitroarenes to aromatic amines with H2 under solvent-free conditions in place of organic solvents is a crucial process for the synthesis of fine chemicals. However, the catalysts that have been identified so far are relatively inactive with primary nitroarenes under solvent-free conditions. Herein, ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC)-supported highly dispersed Ru nanoparticles (Ru NPs) were easily prepared by using a coordination-assisted solvent evaporation induced co-assembly method, where 8-hydroxyquinoline exerts a significant influence on the mesostructure ordering and specific surface area of the Ru/OMC composites. The ultrasmall-sized Ru NPs (∼2.0 nm) supported on ordered mesoporous carbon were then applied in the hydrogenation of nitroarenes, exhibiting high activity and selectivity for numerous structurally diverse nitroarenes under solvent-free conditions. Compared with Ru/OMC-imp and Ru/AC-imp, Ru/OMC-800 exhibited a much higher activity and selectivity for hydrogenation of nitroarenes, suggesting its overwhelmingly better performance than OMC or AC supporting noble NPs by simple impregnation method. The strong metal-support interaction is capable of stabilizing the Ru NPs and achieving good recyclability as well as high selectivity.

Abstract
Fe3O4-SiO2 microspheres were synthesized by a three-step synthetic procedure involving silica coating, surface capping, and surface modification. These magnetic mesoporous microspheres were employed as sorbents for the incorporation of ultrasmall Ru nanoparticles (2-5 nm) followed by thermal aggregation of the microspheres for achieving better heterogeneity and low leaching. The Ru decorated Fe3O4-SiO2 microspheres (Ru@Fe3O4-CSM) were applied as chemoselective catalysts to convert more than 20 substituted nitroarenes to corresponding amines with good-to-excellent conversion (77-99%) and selectivity (70-100%) under mild conditions; the catalyst can be magnetically recovered within a frame of 90s (recovery time-lapse) and reused up to 5 times without significant decrease in activity or selectivity. Magnetic hysteresis studies were performed to elucidate the magnetic behavior of the ruthenium decorated materials.

Abstract
A rhodium terpyridine complex catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of nitroarenes to anilines with i-PrOH as hydrogen source and water as solvent has been developed. The catalytic system can work at a substrate/catalyst (S/C) ratio of 2000, with a turnover frequency (TOF) up to 3360 h-1 , which represents one of the most active catalytic transfer hydrogenation systems for nitroarene reduction. The catalytic system is operationally simple and the protocol could be scaled up to 20 gram scale. The water-soluble catalyst bearing a carboxyl group could be recycled 15 times without significant loss of activity.

Abstract
The pervasive use of toxic nitroaromatics in industrial processes and their prevalence in industrial effluent has motivated the development of remediation strategies, among which is their catalytic reduction to the less toxic and synthetically useful aniline derivatives. While this area of research has a rich history with innumerable examples of active catalysts, the majority of systems rely on expensive precious metals and are submicron- or even a few-nanometer-sized colloidal particles. Such systems provide invaluable academic insight but are unsuitable for practical application. Herein, we report the fabrication of catalysts based on ultralow loading of the semiprecious metal ruthenium on 2–4 mm diameter spherical alumina monoliths. Ruthenium loading is achieved by atomic layer deposition (ALD) and catalytic activity is benchmarked using the ubiquitous para-nitrophenol, NaBH4 aqueous reduction protocol. Recyclability testing points to a very robust catalyst system with intrinsic ease of handling.

Abstract
In the present study, nickel nanoparticles (Ni-NPs) immobilized on graphene oxide-chitosan
(GO-Chit-Ni) have been synthesized and characterized as a catalyst for reduction of nitroarenes in water.
For this purpose, GO has been functionalized with chitosan (GO-Chit). Then, Ni-NPs were immobilized
on the surface of GO-Chit using a simple method. The GO-Chi-Ni nanocomposites were characterized
using Fourier Transforms Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Transmission Electron Microscopy
(TEM), X-Ray Diffraction Measurements (XRD), and Atomic Adsorption Spectrometry (AAS). The
GO-Chi-Ni nanoparticles demonstrated appropriate catalytic activity in reducing nitroarenes to aryl
amines in the existence of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) aqueous solution as a hydrogen source at
80oC. This catalytic system applies environmentally benign water as a solvent that is cheap, easily accessible,
non-toxic, non-volatile, non-flammable and thermally stable. This type of catalyst can be applied
several times with no considerable change in its performance.

Abstract
A mild and sustainable synthetic route was followed for the generation of biomolecule-assisted Ru nanocatalyst under open as well as inert atmosphere using the polyphenol morin. The nanocatalyst was characterized thoroughly by powder X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The nanocatalyst reveals excellent catalytic activity for the reduction of several substituted nitrobenzene to aniline derivatives under simple, mild, and environment-friendly conditions. The catalyst can be reused for four consecutive cycles without significant loss in its catalytic activity.

Abstract
A mild and atom-economic method was developed for direct and efficient synthesis of quinazolinones through a transition-metal-free aerobic oxidative cascade annulation reaction of widely available o-aminoarylnitriles and alcohols. Air could be employed as an effective oxidant under mild conditions, generating water as the only byproduct. Possibly owing to the "cesium effect", the water-soluble base CsOH was found to be crucial in all key steps of the reaction mechanism. Because a wide range of substrates can be used to prepare substituted quinazolinones without contamination by transition-metal residues, this method may be of interest for application in pharmaceutical synthesis. Possible reaction paths were also proposed according to control reactions.

Abstract
Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) emerged as an attractive advanced biomaterial that provides desirable properties such as high strength, lightweight, tailorable surface chemistry, hydrophilicity, and biodegradability. BNC was successfully obtained from a wide range of carbon sources including sugars derived from grass biomass using Komagataeibacter medellinensis ID13488 strain with yields up to 6 g L-1 in static fermentation. Produced BNC was utilized in straightforward catalyst preparation as a solid support for two different transition metals, palladium and copper with metal loading of 20 and 3 wt%, respectively. Sustainable catalysts were applied in the synthesis of valuable fine chemicals, such as biphenyl-4-amine and 4'-fluorobiphenyl-4-amine, used in drug discovery, perfumes and dye industries with excellent product yields of up to 99%. Pd/BNC catalyst was reused 4 times and applied in two consecutive reactions, Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction followed by hydrogenation of nitro to amino group while Cu/BNC catalyst was examined in Chan-Lam coupling reaction. Overall, the environmentally benign process of obtaining nanocellulose from biomass, followed by its utilisation as a solid support in metal-catalysed reactions and its recovery has been described. These findings reveal that BNC is a good support material, and it can be used as a support for different catalytic systems.

Abstract
An eco-friendly protocol for the synthesis of azobenzene dyes by oxidative coupling of primary aromatic amines is reported. As efficient biocatalytic systems, CotA laccase and CotA laccase/ABTS (2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) enable the oxidation of various substituted anilines, in aqueous medium, ambient atmosphere and under mild reaction conditions of pH and temperature. A series of azobenzene dyes were prepared in good to excellent yields in an one-pot reaction. A mechanistic proposal for the formation of the azo derivatives is presented. Our strategy offers an alternative approach for the direct synthesis of azobenzene dyes, avoiding the harsh conditions generally required for most of the traditional synthetic methods.

Abstract
A 3.1% Ru/UiO-66 material was prepared by adsorption of RuCl3 from ethyl acetate on to MOF UiO-66, followed by reduction with NaBH4. The presence of acid-base and ox-red sites allows this 3.1% Ru/UiO-66 material acting as a bifunctional catalyst for the reduction of nitroarenes and tandem reaction of alcohol oxidation/Knoevenagel condensation. The high efficiency of 3.1% Ru/UiO-66 was demonstrated in the reduction of nitroarenes to amines. This system can be applied as a catalyst for at least six successive cycles without loss of activity. The 3.1% Ru/UiO-66 catalyst also was active in the tandem aerobic oxidation of alcohols/Knoevenagel condensation with malononitrile. However, the activity of this catalyst strongly decreased in the second cycle. A combination of physicochemical and catalytic experimental data indicated that Ru nanoparticles are the active sites both for the catalytic reduction of nitro compounds and the aerobic oxidation of alcohols. The activity for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction was from the existence of the "Zr n+-O2- Lewis acid-base" pair in the framework of UiO-66.

Abstract
Microbial synthesis of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) has attracted considerable attention in recent times due to their exceptional capability for the bioremediation of industrial wastes and also for the treatment of wastewater. A bacterial strain Staphylococcus warneri, isolated from the estuarine mangroves of Sundarbans region produced highly stable GNPs by reducing hydrogen auric chloride (HAucl4) salt using intracellular protein extract. The nanoparticles were characterized utilizing ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and surface enhanced Raman scattering. Highly dispersed, spherically shaped GNPs varied around 15-25 nm in size and were highly crystalline with face-centered cubic structures. Recyclable catalytic activity of as-synthesized GNPs was evidenced by complete degradation of nitro aromatic pollutants like 2-nitroaniline, 4-nitroaniline, 2-nitrophenol and 4-nitrophenol. Our GNPs show excellent and efficient catalytic activity with significantly high rate constant (10-1 order) and high turnover frequency (103 order) in recyclable manner up to three times. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Staphylococcus warneri in the production of gold nanoparticles. This green technology for bioremediation of toxic nitro aromatic pollutants is safe and economically beneficial to challenge the development and sustainability issue.

Abstract
Herein, nanoscale metallic nanoparticle-incorporated ordered mesoporous carbon catalysts activated by nitrogen-doped graphene (NGr) were fabricated via an efficient multi-component co-assembly of a phenolic resin, nitrate, acetylacetone, the nitrogen-containing compound 1,10-phenanthroline, and Pluronic F127, followed by carbonization. The obtained well-dispersed nitrogen-doped graphene-activated transition metal nanocatalysts possess a 2-D hexagonally arranged pore structure with a high surface area (∼500 m2 g−1) and uniform pore size (∼4.0 nm) and show excellent activity for the selective hydrogenation–reduction of substituted nitroarenes to anilines in an environmentally friendly aqueous solution. The high catalytic performance and durability is attributed to the synergistic effects among the components, the unique structure of the nitrogen-doped graphene layer-coated metallic nanoparticles, and electronic activation of the doped nitrogen. The non-noble M/NGr@OMC-T catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity and chemoselectivity for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes to anilines in water with hydrogen.![]()

Abstract
A very simple synthesis of bimetallic Pd-Pt-Fe3O4 nanoflake-shaped alloy nanoparticles (NPs) for cascade catalytic reactions such as dehydrogenation of ammonia-borane (AB) followed by the reduction of nitro compounds (R-NO2) to anilines or alkylamines (R-NH2) in methanol at ambient temperature is described. The Pd-Pt-Fe3O4 NPs were easily prepared via a solution phase hydrothermal method involving the simple one-pot coreduction of potassium tetrachloroplatinate (II) and palladium chloride (II) in polyvinylpyrrolidone with subsequent deposition on commercially available Fe3O4 NPs. The bimetallic Pd-Pt alloy NPs decorated on Fe3O4 NPs provide a unique synergistic effect for the catalysis of cascade dehydrogenation/reduction. Various nitroarene derivatives were reduced to anilines with very specific chemoselectivity in the presence of other reducible functional groups. The bimetallic Pd-Pt-Fe3O4 NPs provide a unique synergistic effect for the catalysis of cascade dehydrogenation/reduction. The nitro reduction proceeded in 5 min with nearly quantitative conversions and yields. Furthermore, the magnetically recyclable nanocatalysts were readily separated using an external magnet and reused up to 250 times without any loss of catalytic activity. A larger scale (10 mmol) reaction was also successfully performed with >99% yield. This efficient, recyclable Pd-Pt-Fe3O4 NPs system can therefore be repetitively utilized for the reduction of various nitro-containing compounds.

Abstract
Seedless, surfactantless and support-free unprotected, metallic, interconnected nano-chain networks of ruthenium nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully synthesized via the reduction of ruthenium(iii) chloride (RuCl3) with sodium borohydride (NaBH4) at three different temperatures, viz. 30 °C, 45 °C and 60 °C. The molar ratio of RuCl3 solution and borohydride was optimized to be 1 : 1.5 to produce stable colloids with the optimum final solution pH of 9.7 ± 0.2. Average diameters of the interconnected nano-chain networks prepared at 30 °C (Ru-30), 45 °C (Ru-45) and 60 °C (Ru-60) were 3.5 ± 0.5 nm, 3.0 ± 0.2 nm and 2.6 ± 0.2 nm respectively. The morphology and composition dependent catalytic and electrocatalytic activities of these unprotected Ru nano-chain networks (Ru-30, Ru-45 and Ru-60) were studied in detail. The catalysis study was performed by investigating the transfer hydrogenation of several substituted aromatic nitro compounds. It was observed that Ru-60 was relatively more active compared to Ru-30 and Ru-45, which was reflected in their rate constant values. The electrocatalytic activities of Ru-30, Ru-45 and Ru-60 were screened for anodic water splitting in alkaline medium (0.1 M NaOH) and it was found that all of them showed almost the same activity which required an over-voltage of 308 ± 2 mV to obtain an anodic current density of 10 mA cm-2. The catalytic and electrocatalytic performances of these unprotected Ru0 networks were compared with Ru0 nanomaterials prepared under similar conditions with three different surfactants, viz. CTAB, SDS and TX-100, which revealed that unprotected Ru0 networks are better catalysts than those stabilized with surfactants. The superior catalytic and electrocatalytic performance is due to the availability of unprotected Ru0 surfaces. The present route may provide a new possibility of synthesizing other surfactant-free, unprotected metal colloids for enhanced catalytic and electrocatalytic applications.
