N,N′-Dioxide/Zinc Bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide Complex Catalyzed Enantioselective Diels-Alder Reaction of Cyclopentadiene with Alkynones

A molecular electron density theory study of asymmetric Diels-Alder [4 + 2] reaction's mechanism of furan with three substituted alkynes (5-R substituted-3-(3-(phenylsulfonyl)-propioloyl)-oxazolidin-2-one)

CONTEXT

The [4 +2 ] cycloaddition reactions between furan and three substituted alkynes (5-R-substituted-3-(3-(phenylsulfonyl)-propioloyl)-oxazolidin-2-one) have been investigated using the MEDT approach. Reactivity indices, reaction pathways, and activation energies are calculated. In an investigation of conceptual DFT indices, furan acts as a nucleophile, while the three substituted alkynes (5-R-substituted-3-(3-(phenylsulfonyl)-propioloyl)-oxazolidin-2-one) function as electrophiles in this reaction. The cycloaddition is regioiselective, as demonstrated by the activation and reaction energies, in clear agreement with the experiment's results. Hetero Diels-Alder [4 + 2] cycloadditions occur following a non-concerted two stages one-step molecular mechanism.

METHODS

For the purpose of this study, all calculations were performed using the Gaussian 09 software. Optimization was achieved through Berny's computational gradient optimization method, employing the B3LYP functional and the 6-31G(d) basis set. Analysis of both local and global reactivity indices provided insights into the reactivity tendencies of the reactants, distinguishing between electrophilic and nucleophilic characteristics via Parr functions. Frequency calculations were employed to identify and characterize stationary points, with transition states indicated by a single imaginary frequency and positive values of all frequencies for reactants and product. The electron localization function (ELF) was investigated using the Multiwfn software within the context of topological analyses.

Fe-BPsalan Complex-Catalyzed Asymmetric [4 + 2] Cycloaddition of Cyclopentadiene with α,β-Unsaturated Heterocycles

An efficient iron-catalyzed asymmetric [4 + 2] cycloaddition of cyclopentadiene with α,β-unsaturated acyl imidazoles or 2-cinnamoylisoindoline-1,3-dione derivatives was developed to afford the addition products in high yield and selectivity. Interestingly, the absolute structures of the addition products were controlled by the auxiliaries via different coordination modes with the same type of catalyst.

Conjugated ynones in catalytic enantioselective reactions

Conjugated ynones are easily accessible feedstock and the existence of an alkyne bond endows ynones with different attractive reactivities, thus making them unique substrates for catalytic asymmetric reactions. Their compatibility under organocatalytic, metal-catalyzed as well as cooperative catalytic conditions has resulted in numerous enantioselective transformations. Importantly, conjugated ynones can act as nucleophiles or electrophiles, and serve as easily accessed synthons for different cyclization pathways. This review summarizes the recent literature examples of the catalytic reactions of conjugated ynones and related compounds such as alkyne conjugated α-ketoesters, and classifies these reaction types alongside mechanistic insights whenever possible. We aim to trigger more intensive research in the future to render the asymmetric transformation of ynones as a common and reliable tool for asymmetric synthesis.

Fe-BPsalan complex catalyzed highly enantioselective Diels–Alder reaction of alkylidene β-ketoesters

A practical Fe-BPsalan-catalyzed asymmetric Diels–Alder reaction of various alkylidene β-ketoesters and dienes was developed to afford estrone analogues in excellent yields, good to high diastereoselectivities and excellent enantioselectivities.

Norbornene, norbornadiene and their derivatives: promising semi-products for organic synthesis and production of polymeric materials

The methods for synthesis of promising norbornene monomers from norbornadiene and quadricyclane are summarized. A strategy for their synthesis is discussed, combining theoretical and experimental approaches to the selection of catalysts and the conditions for carrying out stereoselective reactions. The mechanisms of catalytic reactions of synthesis of norbornene monomers, as well as the progress in the macromolecular design of functional polymeric materials based on them, are considered. The data on industrial processes of production of polynorbornenes and areas of their use are presented.

Asymmetric Cycloaddition and Cyclization Reactions Catalyzed by Chiral N,N'-Dioxide-Metal Complexes

Catalytic asymmetric cycloadditions and cascade cyclizations are a major focus for the enantioselective construction of chiral carbo- and heterocycles. A number of chiral Lewis acids and organocatalysts have been designed for such reactions. The development of broadly applicable catalysts bearing novel chiral backbones to meet the demands of various applications is an ongoing challenge. Approximately 10 years ago, we introduced a group of conformationally flexible C₂-symmetric N,N'-dioxide amide compounds, which represent a new class of privileged ligands. The coordination of the four oxygens of a chiral N,N'-dioxide around a central metal generates an octahedral tricyclometalated Lewis acid catalyst that can carry out various enantioselective reactions. In this Account, we summarize our recent studies on asymmetric cycloadditions between various dienophiles and dienes, dipoles and dipolarophiles, and cascade cyclizations catalyzed by chiral N,N'-dioxide-metal complexes. In principle, these unique chiral catalysts lower the LUMO energy of electron-deficient 2π components or heterodienes by coordination with the functional groups via various binding modes. With N-Boc-3-alkenyloxindole and alkylidene malonate as the electron-deficient 2π components, N,N'-dioxide-metal complexes provided excellent catalytic activities and asymmetric inductions for a variety of transformations, including [2 + 1], [3 + 2], [4 + 2], and [8 + 2] cycloadditions. Mechanistically, these substrates could be efficiently activated through bidentate coordination. The strategy was also useful for asymmetric cascade cyclizations to form polycyclic adducts. Monodentate or bidentate coordination of other α,β-unsubstituted carbonyl compounds to metal centers enabled both normal Diels-Alder reactions and inverse-electron-demand hetero-Diels-Alder reactions as well as [2 + 2] additions. Furthermore, hetero-Diels-Alder reactions of aldehydes, ketones, and imines are well-tolerated and afford various heterocycles. This includes allowing the concise synthesis of the antimalarial compound KAE609. Asymmetric Michael/cyclization reactions of bidentate α,β-unsaturated pyrazolamides gave efficient access to the chiral drugs (-)-paroxetine and (R)-thiazesim. The formal [3 + 2] cycloadditions of donor-acceptor epoxides and aziridines enantioselectively gave a series of five-membered oxo- and aza-heterocycles. The reaction of cyclopropane diketones showed unprecedented reactivities and provided a new route for the synthesis of dihydropyrrole and benzimidazole derivatives. General models for the catalytic reactions emerged from knowledge of the absolute configurations of the products of several reactions and X-ray crystal structures of the catalysts. In the field of chirality created by the coordination of an N,N'-dioxide to a metal center, the bonding of one or two reactants establishes a perfect reaction template for generation of the target adducts. Representative examples have been used to demonstrate how the substructures of the ligands and other reaction components affect the stereoselectivity and how metal salts impact the reactivity. These results reveal the importance of tunability and compatibility of the ligands and metal precursors for achieving high stereoinduction and activity.

Chiral GAP catalysts of phosphonylated imidazolidinones and their applications in asymmetric Diels-Alder and Friedel-Crafts reactions

The design and synthesis of recyclable imidazolidinone catalysts using GAP chemistry/technique was described. Their applications in asymmetric Diels-Alder and Friedel-Crafts reactions with α,β-unsaturated aldehydes resulted in excellent yields and higher enantioselectivities than previous processes. As recyclable small molecular catalysts, phosphonylated imidazolidinones can be recovered and reused for up to three runs without costing significant decrease in catalytic activity.

N,N′-Dioxide/nickel(ii)-catalyzed asymmetric Diels–Alder reaction of cyclopentadiene with 2,3-dioxopyrrolidines and 2-alkenoyl pyridines

A chiral N,N′-dioxide/Ni(OTf)₂ complex-catalyzed asymmetric Diels–Alder reaction of cyclopentadiene with 2,3-dioxopyrrolidines and 2-alkenoyl pyridines has been achieved, leading to the corresponding chiral bridged compounds in up to 97% yield, 95 : 5 dr and 97% ee.
