Highly Active and Sintering-Resistant Pt Clusters Supported on FeOx-Hydroxyapatite Achieved by Tailoring Strong Metal-Support Interactions

The catalytic performance of supported metal catalysts is closely related to their structure. While Pt-based catalysts are widely used in many catalytic reactions because of their exceptional intrinsic activity, they tend to deactivate in high-temperature reactions, requiring a tedious and expensive regeneration process. The strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is a promising strategy to improve the stability of supported metal nanoparticles, but often at the price of the activity due to either the coverage of the active sites by support overlay and/or the too-strong metal-support bonding. Herein, we newly constructed a supported Pt cluster catalyst by introducing FeOx into hydroxyapatite (HAP) support to fine-tune the SMSIs. The catalyst exhibited not only high catalytic activity but also sintering resistance, without deactivation in a 100 h test for catalytic CO oxidation. Detailed characterizations reveal that FeOx introduced into HAP weaken the strong covalent metal-support interaction (CMSI) between Pt and FeOx while simultaneously inhibiting the oxidative strong metal-support interaction (OMSI) between Pt and HAP, giving rise to both high activity and thermal stability of the supported Pt clusters.

Advances in heterogeneous single-cluster catalysis

Heterogeneous single-cluster catalysts (SCCs) comprising atomically precise and isolated metal clusters stabilized on appropriately chosen supports offer exciting prospects for enabling novel chemical reactions owing to their broad structural diversity with unparalled opportunities for engineering their properties. Although the pioneering work revealed intriguing performance trends of size-selected metal clusters deposited on supports, synthetic and analytical challenges hindered a thorough understanding of surface chemistry under realistic conditions. This Review underscores the importance of considering the cluster environment in SCCs, encompassing the development of robust metal-support interactions, precise control over the ligand sphere, the influence of reaction media and dynamic behaviour, to uncover new reactivities. Through examples, we illustrate the criticality of tailoring the entire catalytic ensemble in SCCs to achieve stable and selective performance with practically relevant metal coverages. This expansion in application scope transcends from model reactions to complex and technically relevant reactions. Furthermore, we provide a perspective on the opportunities and future directions for SCC design within this rapidly evolving field.

MXene Aerogel Derived Ultra-Active Vanadia Catalyst for Selective Conversion of Sustainable Alcohols to Base Chemicals

Selective oxidation reactions are an important class of the current chemical industry and will be highly important for future sustainable chemical production. Especially, the selective oxidation of primary alcohols is expected to be of high future interest, as alcohols can be obtained on technical scales from biomass fermentation. The oxidation of primary alcohols produces aldehydes, which are important intermediates. While selective methanol oxidation is industrially established, the commercial catalyst suffers from deactivation. Ethanol selective oxidation is not commercialized but would give access to sustainable acetaldehyde production when using renewable ethanol. In this work, it is shown that employing 2D MXenes as building blocks allows one to design a nanostructured oxide catalyst composed of mixed valence vanadium oxides, which outperforms on both reactions known materials by nearly an order of magnitude in activity, while showing high selectivity and stability. The study shows that the synthesis route employing 2D materials is key to obtain these attractive catalysts. V₄C₃T_x MXene structured as an aerogel precursor needs to be employed and mildly oxidized in an alcohol and oxygen atmosphere to result in the aspired nanostructured catalyst composed of mixed valence VO₂, V₆O₁₃, and V₃O₇. Very likely, the bulk stable reduced valence state of the material together coupled with the nanorod arrangement allows for unprecedented oxygen mobility as well as active sites and results in an ultra-active catalyst.

Termination-Accelerated Electrochemical Nitrogen Fixation on Single-Atom Catalysts Supported by MXenes

The synthesis of ammonia (NH₃) from nitrogen (N₂) under ambient conditions is of great significance but hindered by the lack of highly efficient catalysts. By performing first-principles calculations, we have investigated the feasibility for employing a transition metal (TM) atom, supported on Ti₃C₂T₂ MXene with O/OH terminations, as a single-atom catalyst (SAC) for electrochemical nitrogen reduction. The potential catalytic performance of TM single atoms is evaluated by their adsorption behavior on the MXene, together with their ability to bind N₂ and to desorb NH₃ molecules. Of importance, the OH terminations on Ti₃C₂T₂ MXene can effectively enhance the N₂ adsorption and decrease the NH₃ adsorption for single atoms. Based on proposed criteria for promising SACs, our calculations further demonstrate that the Ni/Ti₃C₂O_0.19(OH)_1.81 exhibits reasonable thermodynamics and kinetics toward electrochemical nitrogen reduction.

Rational Design of Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Carbide/Nitride (MXene) Hybrids and Nanocomposites for Catalytic Energy Storage and Conversion

Electro-, photo-, and photoelectrocatalysis play a critical role toward the realization of a sustainable energy economy. They facilitate numerous redox reactions in energy storage and conversion systems, enabling the production of chemical feedstock and clean fuels from abundant resources like water, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. One major obstacle for their large-scale implementation is the scarcity of cost-effective, durable, and efficient catalysts. A family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides (MXenes) has recently emerged as promising earth-abundant candidates for large-area catalytic energy storage and conversion due to their unique properties of hydrophilicity, high metallic conductivity, and ease of production by solution processing. To take full advantage of these desirable properties, MXenes have been combined with other materials to form MXene hybrids with significantly enhanced catalytic performances beyond the sum of their individual components. MXene hybridization tunes the electronic structure toward optimal binding of redox active species to improve intrinsic activity while increasing the density and accessibility of active sites. This review outlines recent strategies in the design of MXene hybrids for industrially relevant electrocatalytic, photocatalytic, and photoelectrocatalytic applications such as water splitting, metal-air/sulfur batteries, carbon dioxide reduction, and nitrogen reduction. By clarifying the roles of individual material components in the MXene hybrids, we provide design strategies to synergistically couple MXenes with associated materials for highly efficient and durable catalytic applications. We conclude by highlighting key gaps in the current understanding of MXene hybrids to guide future MXene hybrid designs in catalytic energy storage and conversion applications.

2D Electrocatalysts for Converting Earth-Abundant Simple Molecules into Value-Added Commodity Chemicals: Recent Progress and Perspectives

The electrocatalytic conversion of earth-abundant simple molecules into value-added commodity chemicals can transform current chemical production regimes with enormous socioeconomic and environmental benefits. For these applications, 2D electrocatalysts have emerged as a new class of high-performance electrocatalyst with massive forward-looking potential. Recent advances in 2D electrocatalysts are reviewed for emerging applications that utilize naturally existing H₂ O, N₂ , O₂ , Cl^- (seawater) and CH₄ (natural gas) as reactants for nitrogen reduction (N₂ → NH₃ ), two-electron oxygen reduction (O₂ → H₂ O₂ ), chlorine evolution (Cl^- → Cl₂ ), and methane partial oxidation (CH₄ → CH₃ OH) reactions to generate NH₃ , H₂ O₂ , Cl₂ , and CH₃ OH. The unique 2D features and effective approaches that take advantage of such features to create high-performance 2D electrocatalysts are articulated with emphasis. To benefit the readers and expedite future progress, the challenges facing the future development of 2D electrocatalysts for each of the above reactions and the related perspectives are provided.
