Development of Cellulose Microfibers from Mixed Solutions of PAN-Cellulose in N-Methylmorpholine-N-Oxide

Mixed solutions of PAN with cellulose in N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) were prepared. Systems with a fraction of a dispersed phase of a cellulose solution in NMMO up to 40% are characterized by the formation of fibrillar morphology. The fibrils created as the mixed solution is forced through the capillary take on a more regular order as the cellulose content in the system drops. The systems' morphology is considered to range from a heterogeneous two-phase solution to regular fibrils. The generated morphology, in which the cellulose fibrils are encircled by the PAN, can be fixed by spinning fibers. Cellulose fibrils have a diameter of no more than a few microns. The length of the fibrils is limited by the size of the fiber being formed. The process of selectively removing PAN was used to isolate the cellulose microfibrils. Several techniques were used to evaluate the mechanical properties of isolated cellulose microfibers. Atomic force microscopy allowed for the evaluation of the fiber stiffness and the creation of topographic maps of the fibers. Cellulose microfibers have a higher Young's modulus (more than 30 GPa) than cellulose fibers formed in a comparable method, which affects the mechanical properties of composite fibers.

Crosslinked Chitosan Films Supplemented with Randia sp. Fruit Extract

This work proposes the development of a polymer film made up of affordable components for its use as a healthcare material. Chitosan, itaconic acid, and Randia capitata fruit extract (Mexican variation) are the unique ingredients of this biomaterial prospect. Chitosan (from crustacean chitin) is crosslinked with itaconic acid, and in situ added R. capitata fruit extract in a one-pot reaction carried out in water as the sole solvent. Structurally, the film formed is an ionically crosslinked composite characterized by IR spectroscopy and thermal analysis (DSC and TGA); cell viability was also performed in vitro using fibroblasts BALB/3T3. Dry and swollen films were analyzed to determine affinity and stability in water. This chitosan-based hydrogel is designed as a wound dressing due to the combined properties of the chitosan with R. capitata fruit extract, which has potential as bioactive material due to its properties in epithelial regeneration.

The Effect of Non-Solvent Nature on the Rheological Properties of Cellulose Solution in Diluted Ionic Liquid and Performance of Nanofiltration Membranes

The weak point of ionic liquids is their high viscosity, limiting the maximum polymer concentration in the forming solutions. A low-viscous co-solvent can reduce viscosity, but cellulose has none. This study demonstrates that dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), being non-solvent for cellulose, can act as a nominal co-solvent to improve its processing into a nanofiltration membrane by phase inversion. A study of the rheology of cellulose solutions in diluted ionic liquids ([EMIM]Ac, [EMIM]Cl, and [BMIM]Ac) containing up to 75% DMSO showed the possibility of decreasing the viscosity by up to 50 times while keeping the same cellulose concentration. Surprisingly, typical cellulose non-solvents (water, methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol) behave similarly, reducing the viscosity at low doses but causing structuring of the cellulose solution and its phase separation at high concentrations. According to laser interferometry, the nature of these non-solvents affects the mass transfer direction relative to the forming membrane and the substance interdiffusion rate, which increases by four-fold when passing from isopropanol to methanol or water. Examination of the nanofiltration characteristics of the obtained membranes showed that the dilution of ionic liquid enhances the rejection without changing the permeability, while the transition to alcohols increases the permeability while maintaining the rejection.

Influence of Alkyl Acrylate Nature on Rheological Properties of Polyacrylonitrile Terpolymers Solutions, Spinnability and Mechanical Characteristics of Fibers

The influence of alkyl acrylate comonomers in the rank of methyl- (MA), butyl- (BA), ethylhexyl- (EGA), and lauryl- (LA) in ternary copolymers based on acrylonitrile, alkyl acrylate and acrylamide (PAN-alkyl acrylate) on their solutions rheological behavior in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and mechanical properties of the spun fibers have been investigated. To reveal the role of molecular weight, two series of copolymers with molecular weights of ~50 and 150 kg/mol have been studied. It was shown that the nature of the alkyl acrylate does not significantly affect the rheological behavior of their solutions regardless of the length of the alkyl substituent and the content of the alkyl acrylate in copolymers. An exception is the high-molecular PAN-LA, which is characterized by a non-Newtonian behavior at lower concentrations. Two series of fibers were spun from the characterized ranks of low and high-molecular-weight copolymer solutions. For all copolymers, a 2.5-5-fold increase in the strength and elastic modulus of the fiber was found with an increase in M_w. It has been shown that PAN-MA and PAN-LA fibers have a tensile strength of 800 MPa that is 1.5-3 times higher than that of other copolymers spun in the same conditions.

Effect of Hydrogen Bonding on Dynamic Rheological Behavior of PVA Aqueous Solution

The rheological behavior of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) aqueous solution is crucial to optimizing the processing technology and performance of PVA products. In this paper, the dynamic rheological behavior of PVA aqueous solution was investigated in detail. PVA solution with a concentration of 10 wt% showed unnormal rheological behaviors, that is, the liquid-like behavior in the high frequency (ω) region and the solid-like behavior in the low ω region. A storage modulus (G′) plateau appears in the relatively low ω region as a gel with a network structure. Different from conventional hydrogel, this plateau has a low modulus, and the corresponding size of the relaxation unit is estimated to be 554 nm, being higher than the size of a whole PVA chain. It is believed that the network mesh is formed by the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions among PVA chains. The relaxation time of these meshes is longer than the reptation time of a PVA chain. Based on the relaxation spectrum and calculation analysis, it is found that the destruction of intermolecular hydrogen bonds, such as by heating up, adding sodium dodecyl sulfate, and shear operation, will make the relaxation unit (mesh) larger and lead to the left shift of the intersection of G′ and loss modulus (G″). In a PVA solution with a high concentration, multiple meshes of various sizes could be formed and thus generate multiple relaxation peaks. The large-sized meshes mainly contribute to the left shift of the intersection of G′ and G″, and the small-sized meshes contribute to the high plateau modulus. The results in this paper offer a new angle to analyze polymer solutions with strong intermolecular interaction.
