Study of Aerogel-Modified Recycled Polyurethane Nanocomposites

In this study, a liquid regenerated polyether polyol was obtained after the degradation of waste PU foam by the two-component decrosslinker agents ethylene glycol and ethanolamine. The regenerated polyol-based polyurethane foam was modified by adding different ratios of SiO2 aerogel through the self-preparation of silica aerogel (SiO2 aerogel) to prepare aerogel/regenerated polyurethane foam nanocomposites of SiO2 aerogel-modified regenerated polyurethane composites. A series of analytical tests on self-prepared silica aerogel and aerogel-modified recycled polyurethane foam composites were performed. The analysis of the test results shows that the regenerated rigid PU foam obtained with SiO2 aerogel addition of 0.3% in the polyurethane degradation material has a small density, low thermal conductivity, and higher compressive strength; hence, the prepared silica aerogel-regenerated polyol-based polyurethane nanocomposite has good thermal insulation and strength support properties. The clean, low-carbon, and high-value utilization of recycled waste polyurethane was achieved.

Study on Efficient Degradation of Waste PU Foam

In this paper, the high-efficiency degradation and alcoholysis recovery of waste polyurethane foam were realized using a combination of a high-efficiency alkali metal catalyst (CsOH) and two-component mixed alcoholysis agents (glycerol and butanediol) in different proportions, using recycled polyether polyol and one-step foaming to prepare regenerated thermosetting polyurethane hard foam. The foaming agent and catalyst were adjusted experimentally to prepare regenerated polyurethane foam, and a series of tests were conducted on the viscosity, GPC, hydroxyl value, infrared spectrum, foaming time, apparent density, compressive strength, and other properties of the degradation products of the regenerated thermosetting polyurethane rigid foam. The resulting data were analyzed, and the following conclusions were drawn: The optimal conditions of alcoholysis were obtained when the mass ratio of glycerol to butanediol was 3:2, the amount of cesium hydroxide was 0.08%, the reaction temperature was 170 °C, and the reaction time was 2.5 h. Regenerated polyurethane foam with an apparent density of 34.1 kg/m³ and a compressive strength of 0.301 MPa was prepared under these conditions. It had good thermal stability, complete sample pores, and a strong skeleton. At this time, these are the best reaction conditions for the alcoholysis of waste polyurethane foam, and the regenerated polyurethane foam meets various national standards.

Hybrid Structures Made of Polyurethane/Graphene Nanocomposite Foams Embedded within Aluminum Open-Cell Foam

This paper focuses on the development of hybrid structures containing two different classes of porous materials, nanocomposite foams made of polyurethane combined with graphene-based materials, and aluminum open-cell foams (Al-OC). Prior to the hybrid structures preparation, the nanocomposite foam formulation was optimized. The optimization consisted of studying the effect of the addition of graphene oxide (GO) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) at different loadings (1.0, 2.5 and 5.0 wt%) during the polyurethane foam (PUF) formation, and their effect on the final nanocomposite properties. Globally, the results showed enhanced mechanical, acoustic and fire-retardant properties of the PUF nanocomposites when compared with pristine PUF. In a later step, the hybrid structure was prepared by embedding the Al-OC foam with the optimized nanocomposite formulation (prepared with 2.5 wt% of GNPs (PUF/GNPs2.5)). The process of filling the pores of the Al-OC was successfully achieved, with the resulting hybrid structure retaining low thermal conductivity values, around 0.038 W∙m−1∙K−1, and presenting an improved sound absorption coefficient, especially for mid to high frequencies, with respect to the individual foams. Furthermore, the new hybrid structure also displayed better mechanical properties (the stress corresponding to 10% of deformation was improved in more than 10 and 1.3 times comparatively to PUF/GNPs2.5 and Al-OC, respectively).

Morphology, Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Thermoplastic Polyurethane Containing Reduced Graphene Oxide and Graphene Nanoplatelets

Polyurethane/graphene nanocomposites were synthesized using commercial thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU, Apilon 52DE55), and two types of graphene derivatives: graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO). Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy, TEM, and SEM microscopy and XRD techniques were used to chemically and structurally characterize GNP and RGO nanofillers. The properties of the new TPU nanocomposite materials were studied using thermal analysis techniques (Dynamical Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG)) to describe the influence of graphene nanofillers on polyurethane matrix. Our investigation describes the comparison of two types of graphene derivatives, commercial one (GNP) and synthesized (RGO) on thermoplastic polyurethanes. These nanofillers provides opportunities to achieve compatibility with the TPU matrix. The property enhancements are attributed commonly to high aspect ratio of graphene nanoplatelets and filler-polymer interactions at the interface. The obtained nanocomposites exhibit higher thermal and mechanical properties due to the good dispersion of both nanofillers into TPU matrix. It was found that the addition of 2 wt % of the nanofiller could lead to a significant reinforcement effect on the TPU matrix. Also, with high content of nanofiller (GNP and RGO), the Payne effect was observed.
