Mechanical, thermal and accelerated weathering studies of bio-based polyurethane/clay nanocomposites coatings

In Vivo Durability of Polyurethane Insulated Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Leads

The 6935M Sprint Quattro Secure S and 6947M Sprint Quattro Secure are high voltage leads designed to administer a maximum of 40 joules of energy for terminating ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. Both leads utilize silicone insulation and a polyurethane outer coating. The inner coil is shielded with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tubing, while other conductors are enveloped in ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), contributing to the structural integrity and functionality of these leads. Polyurethane is a preferred material for the outer insulation of cardiac leads due to its flexibility and biocompatibility, while silicone rubber ensures chemical stability within the body, minimizing inflammatory or rejection responses. Thirteen implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) leads were obtained from the Wright State University Anatomical Gift Program. The as-received devices exhibited varied in vivo implantation durations ranging from less than a month to 89 months, with an average in vivo duration of 41 ± 27 months. Tests were conducted using the Test Resources Q series system, ensuring compliance with ASTM Standard D 1708-02a and ASTM Standard D 412-06a. During testing, a load was applied to the intact lead, with careful inspection for surface defects before each test. Results of load to failure, percentage elongation, percentage elongation at 5 N, ultimate tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity were calculated. The findings revealed no significant differences in these parameters across all in vivo exposure durations. The residual properties of these ICD leads demonstrated remarkable stability and performance over a wide range of in vivo exposure durations, with no statistically significant degradation or performance changes observed.

Influence of natural exposure on castor oil based polyurethane reinforced with waste tire rubber

Waste tire rubber (WTR) has been extensively generated worldwide due to mobility needs growth. About 1.5 billion units are generated annually, constantly discharged in the environment with a few reusability alternatives. Therefore, rubber recovery methods and these residues' transformation into a cost-effective product have gained attention. Aiming to minimize the usage of fossil resources and contributes to a circular economy, it was analyzed the usage of WTR particles (5-20% by weight) in castor oil-based polyurethane foams under natural aging to promote a holistic view of all factors involved in the performance of the foams. Morphological, thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties were determined before and after exposure to open air to observe the impact of photo-oxidation and hydrolysis. The increase in viscosity of pre-polymer during the rubber loading produced greater density foams with smaller cell sizes than neat PU, in which the average cell size increased after the weathering. The rubber contributes to enhancing the compressive behavior in the non-exposed samples. After exposure, the results suggest that degradation may act to increase the crosslinking density even with the presented structural changes such as yellowing and voids. Regarding thermal stability, the rubber promotes a slight decay in the ability to resist a heat flow before and after weathering. Still, the char yield increased, showing a possibility of better fire retardancy for composites. FTIR and UV-vis showed chemical structure changes as Photo-Fries network rearrangement, Norrish I random chain scission, and Norrish II β-scission. Besides, UV-vis revealed the maximum absorbance in the UVB region, showing that the PU reinforced by WTR can be a promising material for civil coatings.

The Prospering of Macromolecular Materials Based on Plant Oils within the Blooming Field of Polymers from Renewable Resources

This paper provides an overview of the recent progress in research and development dealing with polymers derived from plant oils. It highlights the widening interest in novel approaches to the synthesis, characterization, and properties of these materials from renewable resources and emphasizes their growing impact on sustainable macromolecular science and technology. The monomers used include unmodified triglycerides, their fatty acids or the corresponding esters, and chemically modified triglycerides and fatty acid esters. Comonomers include styrene, divinylbenzene, acrylics, furan derivatives, epoxides, etc. The synthetic pathways adopted for the preparation of these materials are very varied, going from traditional free radical and cationic polymerizations to polycondensation reactions, as well as metatheses and Diels-Alder syntheses. In addition to this general appraisal, the specific topic of the use of tung oil as a source of original polymers, copolymers, and (nano)composites is discussed in greater detail in terms of mechanisms, structures, properties, and possible applications.
