Eco-Friendly Lithium Separators: A Frontier Exploration of Cellulose-Based Materials

Lithium-ion batteries, as an excellent energy storage solution, require continuous innovation in component design to enhance safety and performance. In this review, we delve into the field of eco-friendly lithium-ion battery separators, focusing on the potential of cellulose-based materials as sustainable alternatives to traditional polyolefin separators. Our analysis shows that cellulose materials, with their inherent degradability and renewability, can provide exceptional thermal stability, electrolyte absorption capability, and economic feasibility. We systematically classify and analyze the latest advancements in cellulose-based battery separators, highlighting the critical role of their superior hydrophilicity and mechanical strength in improving ion transport efficiency and reducing internal short circuits. The novelty of this review lies in the comprehensive evaluation of synthesis methods and cost-effectiveness of cellulose-based separators, addressing significant knowledge gaps in the existing literature. We explore production processes and their scalability in detail, and propose innovative modification strategies such as chemical functionalization and nanocomposite integration to significantly enhance separator performance metrics. Our forward-looking discussion predicts the development trajectory of cellulose-based separators, identifying key areas for future research to overcome current challenges and accelerate the commercialization of these green technologies. Looking ahead, cellulose-based separators not only have the potential to meet but also to exceed the benchmarks set by traditional materials, providing compelling solutions for the next generation of lithium-ion batteries.

Exploitation of function groups in cellulose materials for lithium-ion batteries applications

Cellulose, an abundant and eco-friendly polymer, is a promising raw material to be used for preparing energy storage devices such as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Despite the significance of cellulose functional groups in LIBs components, their structure-properties-application relationship remains largely unexplored. This article thoroughly reviews the current research status on cellulose-based materials for LIBs components, with a specific focus on the impact of functional groups in cellulose-based separators. The emphasis is on how these functional groups can enhance the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of the separators, potentially replacing conventional non-renewal material-derived components. Through a meticulous investigation, the present review reveals that certain functional groups, such as hydroxyl groups (-OH), carboxyl groups (-COOH), carbonyl groups (-CHO), ester functions (R-COO-R'), play a crucial role in improving the mechanical strength and wetting ability of cellulose-based separators. Additionally, the inclusion of phosphoric group (-PO3H2), sulfonic group (-SO3H) in separators can contribute to the enhanced thermal stability. The significance of comprehending the influence of functional groups in cellulose-based materials on LIBs performance is highlighted by these findings. Ultimately, this review explores the challenges and perspectives of cellulose-based LIBs, offering specific recommendations and prospects for future research in this area.

A Light-Thin Chitosan Nanofiber Separator for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

With the development of portable devices and wearable devices, there is a higher demand for high-energy density and light lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The separator is a significant component directly affecting the performance of LIBs. In this paper, a thin and porous chitosan nanofiber separator was successfully fabricated using the simple ethanol displacement method. The thickness of the CME15 separator was about half that of mainstream commercial Celgard2325 separators. Owing to its inherent polarity and high porosity, the obtained CME15 separator achieved a small contact angle (18°) and excellent electrolyte wettability (324% uptake). The CME15 separator could maintain excellent thermal dimensional stability at 160 °C. Furthermore, the CME15 separator-based LIBs exhibited excellent cycling performance after 100 cycles (117 mAh g-1 at 1 C). The present work offers a perspective on applying a chitosan nanofiber separator in light and high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

A Review of Nonaqueous Electrolytes, Binders, and Separators for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are the most important electrochemical energy storage devices due to their high energy density, long cycle life, and low cost. During the past decades, many review papers outlining the advantages of state-of-the-art LIBs have been published, and extensive efforts have been devoted to improving their specific energy density and cycle life performance. These papers are primarily focused on the design and development of various advanced cathode and anode electrode materials, with less attention given to the other important components of the battery. The “nonelectroconductive” components are of equal importance to electrode active materials and can significantly affect the performance of LIBs. They could directly impact the capacity, safety, charging time, and cycle life of batteries and thus affect their commercial application. This review summarizes the recent progress in the development of nonaqueous electrolytes, binders, and separators for LIBs and discusses their impact on the battery performance. In addition, the challenges and perspectives for future development of LIBs are discussed, and new avenues for state-of-the-art LIBs to reach their full potential for a wide range of practical applications are outlined.

Role of nanocellulose in industrial and pharmaceutical sectors - A review

Lignocellulosic biomass from agricultural residues serves as the critical component to replace synthetic polymeric materials in the coming future. Agricultural residues can be used to obtain cellulose by delignification followed by bleaching. Further, cellulose is converted into nanocellulose by various methods. Nanocellulose is used in multiple pharmaceutical applications as a polymer in hydrogels, transdermal drug delivery systems, aerogels, wound healing dressing materials, as superdisintegrants in fast dissolving tablets, emulgel, microparticles, gels, foams, thickening agents, stabilizers, cosmetics, medical implants, tissue engineering, liposomes, food and composites, etc. This review provides detailed knowledge about the nature of nanocellulose regarding its high surface area, high polymerization, loading, and binding capacity of hydrophilic and hydrophobic active pharmaceutical ingredients and significance of various applications of nanocellulose. Biocompatible and non-toxic, it makes it an ideal material for applications in the biomedical field. A significant advantage is a biocompatibility, which is non-toxic for many biomedical applications.

Cross-Linked PVA/HNT Composite Separator Enables Stable Lithium-Organic Batteries under Elevated Temperature

Li-organic batteries (LOBs) are promising advanced battery systems because of their unique advantages in capacity, cost, and sustainability. However, the shuttling effect of soluble organic redox intermediates and the intrinsic dissolution of small-molecular electrodes have hindered the practical application of these cells, especially under high operating temperatures. Herein, a cross-linked membrane with abundant negative charge for high-temperature LOBs is prepared via electrospinning of poly(vinyl alcohol) containing halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). The translocation of negatively charged organic intermediates can be suppressed by the electronic repulsion and the cross-linked network while the positively charged Li⁺ are maintained, which is attributed to the intrinsic electronegativity of HNTs and their well-organized and homogeneous distribution in the PVA matrix. A battery using a PVA/HNT composite separator (EPH-10) and an anthraquinone (AQ) cathode exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 231.6 mAh g^-1 and an excellent cycling performance (91.4% capacity retention, 300 cycles) at 25 °C. Even at high temperatures (60 and 80 °C), its capacity retention is more than 89.2 and 80.4% after 100 cycles, respectively. Our approach demonstrates the potential of the EPH-10 composite membrane as a separator for high-temperature LOB applications.

Advanced Nanocellulose-Based Composites for Flexible Functional Energy Storage Devices

With the increasing demand for wearable electronics (such as smartwatch equipment, wearable health monitoring systems, and human-robot interface units), flexible energy storage systems with eco-friendly, low-cost, multifunctional characteristics, and high electrochemical performances are imperative to be constructed. Nanocellulose with sustainable natural abundance, superb properties, and unique structures has emerged as a promising nanomaterial, which shows significant potential for fabricating functional energy storage systems. This review is intended to provide novel perspectives on the combination of nanocellulose with other electrochemical materials to design and fabricate nanocellulose-based flexible composites for advanced energy storage devices. First, the unique structural characteristics and properties of nanocellulose are briefly introduced. Second, the structure-property-application relationships of these composites are addressed to optimize their performances from the perspective of processing technologies and micro/nano-interface structure. Next, the recent specific applications of nanocellulose-based composites, ranging from flexible lithium-ion batteries and electrochemical supercapacitors to emerging electrochemical energy storage devices, such as lithium-sulfur batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and zinc-ion batteries, are comprehensively discussed. Finally, the current challenges and future developments in nanocellulose-based composites for the next generation of flexible energy storage systems are proposed.

Why Cellulose-Based Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices?

Recent findings demonstrate that cellulose, a highly abundant, versatile, sustainable, and inexpensive material, can be used in the preparation of very stable and flexible electrochemical energy storage devices with high energy and power densities by using electrodes with high mass loadings, composed of conducting composites with high surface areas and thin layers of electroactive material, as well as cellulose-based current collectors and functional separators. Close attention should, however, be paid to the properties of the cellulose (e.g., porosity, pore distribution, pore-size distribution, and crystallinity). The manufacturing of cellulose-based electrodes and all-cellulose devices is also well-suited for large-scale production since it can be made using straightforward filtration-based techniques or paper-making approaches, as well as utilizing various printing techniques. Herein, the recent development and possibilities associated with the use of cellulose are discussed, regarding the manufacturing of electrochemical energy storage devices comprising electrodes with high energy and power densities and lightweight current collectors and functional separators.

Cellulose-Based Flexible Functional Materials for Emerging Intelligent Electronics

There is currently enormous and growing demand for flexible electronics for personalized mobile equipment, human-machine interface units, wearable medical-healthcare systems, and bionic intelligent robots. Cellulose is a well-known natural biopolymer that has multiple advantages including low cost, renewability, easy processability, and biodegradability, as well as appealing mechanical performance, dielectricity, piezoelectricity, and convertibility. Because of its multiple merits, cellulose is frequently used as a substrate, binder, dielectric layer, gel electrolyte, and derived carbon material for flexible electronic devices. Leveraging the advantages of cellulose to design advanced functional materials will have a significant impact on portable intelligent electronics. Herein, the unique molecular structure and nanostructures (nanocrystals, nanofibers, nanosheets, etc.) of cellulose are briefly introduced, the structure-property-application relationships of cellulosic materials summarized, and the processing technologies for fabricating cellulose-based flexible electronics considered. The focus then turns to the recent advances of cellulose-based functional materials toward emerging intelligent electronic devices including flexible sensors, optoelectronic devices, field-effect transistors, nanogenerators, electrochemical energy storage devices, biomimetic electronic skins, and biological detection devices. Finally, an outlook of the potential challenges and future prospects for developing cellulose-based wearable devices and bioelectronic systems is presented.

Ionic conductivity enhancement in solid polymer electrolytes by electrochemical in situ formation of an interpenetrating network

Various overoxidized poly(1H-pyrrole) (PPy), poly(N-methylpyrrole) (PMePy) or poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) membranes incorporated into an acrylate-based solid polymer electrolyte matrix (SPE) were directly electrosynthesized by a two-step in situ procedure. The aim was to extend and improve fundamental properties of pure SPE materials. The polymer matrix is based on the cross-linking of glycerol propoxylate (1PO/OH) triacrylate (GPTA) with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) as a conducting salt. A self-standing and flexible polymer electrolyte film is formed during the UV-induced photopolymerization of the acrylate precursors, followed by an electrochemical polymerization of the conducting polymers to form a 3D-IPN. The electrical conductivity of the conducting polymer is destroyed by electrochemical overoxidation in order to convert the conducting polymer into an ion-exchange membrane by introduction of electron-rich groups onto polymer units. The resulting polymer films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The results of this study show that the combination of a polyacrylate-matrix with ion selective properties of overoxidized CPs leads to new 3D materials with higher ionic conductivity than SPEs and separator or selective ion-exchange membrane properties with good stability by facile fabrication.

Biofilm Nanofiber-Coated Separators for Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Anode and Ultrahigh-Rate Lithium Batteries

Rechargeable batteries that combine high energy density with high power density are highly demanded. However, the wide utilization of lithium metal anode is limited by the uncontrollable dendrite growth, and the conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) commonly suffer from low rate capability. Here, we for the first time develop a biofilm-coated separator for high-energy and high-power batteries. It reveals that the coating of Escherichia coli protein nanofibers can improve electrolyte wettability and lithium transference number and enhance adhesion between separators and electrodes. Thus, lithium dendrite growth is impeded because of the uniform distribution of the Li-ion flux. The modified separator also enables the stable cycling of high-voltage Li|Li_1.2Mn_0.6Ni_0.2O₂ (LNMO) cells at an extremely high rate of 20 C, delivering a high specific capacity of 83.1 mA h g^-1, which exceeds the conventional counterpart. In addition, the modified separator in the Li₄Ti₅O₁₂|LNMO full cell also exhibits a larger capacity of 68.2 mA h g^-1 at 10 C than the uncoated separator of 37.4 mA h g^-1. Such remarkable performances of the modified separators arise from the conformal, adhesive, and endurable coating of biofilm nanofibers. Our work opens up a new opportunity for protein-based biomaterials in practical application of high-energy and high-power batteries.

Cladophora Cellulose: Unique Biopolymer Nanofibrils for Emerging Energy, Environmental, and Life Science Applications

Because of its natural abundance, hierarchical fibrous structure, mechanical flexibility, potential for chemical modification, biocompatibility, renewability, and abundance, cellulose is one of the most promising green materials for a bio-based future and sustainable economy. Cellulose derived from wood or bacteria has dominated the industrial cellulose market and has been developed to produce a number of advanced materials for applications in energy storage, environmental, and biotechnology areas. However, Cladophora cellulose (CC) extracted from green algae has unprecedented advantages over those celluloses because of its high crystallinity (>95%), low moisture adsorption capacity, excellent solution processability, high porosity in the mesoporous range, and associated high specific surface area. The unique physical and chemical properties of CC can add new features to and enhance the performance of nanocellulose-based materials, and these attributes have attracted a great deal of research interest over the past decade. This Account summarizes our recent research on the preparation, characterization, functionalization, and versatile applications of CC. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of the uniqueness of CC with respect to material structure, properties, and emerging applications. We discuss the potential of CC in energy storage, environmental science, and life science, with emphasis on applications in which its properties are superior to those of other nanocellulose forms. Specifically, we discuss the production of the first-ever paper battery based on CC. This battery has initiated a rising interest in the development of sustainable paper-based energy storage devices, where cellulose is used as a combined building block and binder for paper electrodes of various types in combination with carbon, conducting polymers, and other electroactive materials. High-active-mass and high-mass-loading paper electrodes can be made in which the CC acts as a high-surface-area and porous substrate while a thin layer of electroactive material is coated on individual nanofibrils. We have shown that CC membranes can be used directly as battery separators because of their low moisture content, high mesoporosity, high thermal stability, and good electrolyte wettability. The safety, stability, and capacity of lithium-ion batteries can be enhanced simply by using CC-based separators. Moreover, the high chemical modifiability and adjustable porosity of dried CC papers allow them to be used as advanced membranes for environmental science (water and air purification, pollutant adsorption) and life science (virus isolation, protein recovery, hemodialysis, DNA extraction, bioactive substrates). Finally, we outline some concluding perspectives on the challenges and future directions of CC research with the aim to open up yet unexplored fields of use for this interesting material.

High-Energy and High-Power Nonaqueous Lithium-Ion Capacitors Based on Polypyrrole/Carbon Nanotube Composites as Pseudocapacitive Cathodes

The energy density of present lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) is greatly hindered by the limited specific capacities of porous carbon electrodes. Herein, we report the development of a nonaqueous LIC system by integrating two reversible electrode processes, that is, anion doping/undoping in a core-shell structured polypyrrole/carbon nanotube (Ppy@CNT) composite cathode and Li⁺ intercalation/deintercalation in a Fe₃O₄@carbon (C) anode. The hybrid Ppy@CNT is utilized as a promising pseudocapacitive cathode for nonaqueous LIC applications. The Ppy provides high pseudocapacitance via the doping/undoping reaction with PF₆^- anions. Meanwhile, the CNT backbone significantly enhances the electrical conductivity. The as-developed composite delivers noteworthy capacities with exceptional stability (98.7 mA h g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1 and retains 89.7% after cycling at 3 A g^-1 for 1000 times in Li-half cell), which outperforms state-of-art porous carbon cathodes in present LICs. Furthermore, when paired with Fe₃O₄@C anodes, the as-developed LICs demonstrate a superior energy density of 101.0 W h kg^-1 at 2709 W kg^-1 and still maintain 70 W h kg^-1 at an increased power density of 17 186 W kg^-1. The findings of this work provides new knowledge on the cathode materials for LICs.

Polymer Template Synthesis of Soft, Light, and Robust Oxide Ceramic Films

Oxide ceramic materials underpin a wide variety of technologies. However, the inherent fragility of these materials limits their use in emerging fields like wearable electronics and soft energy storage devices. Here, we develop a sol-gel electrospinning technique followed by calcination to create a range of oxide ceramic nanofiber films that exhibit significant softness without fragility after various deformations. This approach causes the ceramic crystals to fuse together at a low temperature during their growth within the polymer nanofiber templates. All the synthesized ceramic films, from SiO₂ to BaTiO₃, Li_0.33La_0.56TiO₃, and Li₇La₃Zr₂O₁₂, have silk-like softness of <31 mN, low density of <0.36 g/cm³ and robust fire resistance to 1,000°C. Fabricated separators based on these films display large electrolyte uptakes of >900% and high thermal insulation performance, enhancing the rate capability and safety of lithium batteries. The reported method allows scalable synthesis of soft oxide ceramic films with properties appealing for applications.

Versatile Application of Nanocellulose: From Industry to Skin Tissue Engineering and Wound Healing

Nanocellulose is cellulose in the form of nanostructures, i.e., features not exceeding 100 nm at least in one dimension. These nanostructures include nanofibrils, found in bacterial cellulose; nanofibers, present particularly in electrospun matrices; and nanowhiskers, nanocrystals, nanorods, and nanoballs. These structures can be further assembled into bigger two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) nano-, micro-, and macro-structures, such as nanoplatelets, membranes, films, microparticles, and porous macroscopic matrices. There are four main sources of nanocellulose: bacteria (Gluconacetobacter), plants (trees, shrubs, herbs), algae (Cladophora), and animals (Tunicata). Nanocellulose has emerged for a wide range of industrial, technology, and biomedical applications, namely for adsorption, ultrafiltration, packaging, conservation of historical artifacts, thermal insulation and fire retardation, energy extraction and storage, acoustics, sensorics, controlled drug delivery, and particularly for tissue engineering. Nanocellulose is promising for use in scaffolds for engineering of blood vessels, neural tissue, bone, cartilage, liver, adipose tissue, urethra and dura mater, for repairing connective tissue and congenital heart defects, and for constructing contact lenses and protective barriers. This review is focused on applications of nanocellulose in skin tissue engineering and wound healing as a scaffold for cell growth, for delivering cells into wounds, and as a material for advanced wound dressings coupled with drug delivery, transparency and sensorics. Potential cytotoxicity and immunogenicity of nanocellulose are also discussed.
