Stringing Bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Cobalt Phosphide Composite for High-Efficiency Overall Water Splitting

Ligand-induced hollow binary metal-organic framework derived Fe-doped cobalt-carbon nanomaterials for oxygen evolution

There is significant anticipation for high-efficiency and cost-effective non-precious metal-based catalysts to advance the industrial application of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for hydrogen production. This study introduces an efficient strategy that utilizes ligand-induced metal-organic framework (MOF) building blocks for the synthesis of hollow binary zeolitic imidazolate frameworks 67 (ZIF-67) and Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) (ZIF-67@PBA) heterostructures through a hybrid MOF-on-MOF approach. Manipulating the Co2+/Zn2+ ratio in the precursor ZIF-67 allows for the convenient synthesis of the final product, denoted as CoxFe-ZP, after pyrolysis, where the inclusion of Zn effectively modulates the distribution of Co in the catalyst. The resulting CoxFe-ZP catalysts exhibit a positive synergistic effect between hollow graphitic carbon nanomaterials and Fe-doped Co nanoparticles. The optimal Co0.3Fe-ZP catalyst demonstrates satisfactory OER performance, achieving an overpotential of 302 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 60.0 mV dec-1. Further analysis of the activation energy confirms that the enhanced OER activity of Co0.3Fe-ZP can be reasonably attributed to the combined influence of its morphology and composition. This study demonstrates a ligand-induced method for examining the morphology and electrochemical properties of grown binary MOF-on-MOF heterostructures for OER applications.

Synthesis and Oxygen Evolution Reaction Application of a Co-Cd Based Bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework

In the realm of renewable energy technologies, the development of efficient and durable electrocatalysts is paramount, especially for applications like electrochemical water splitting. This research focuses on synthesizing a novel bimetallic metal-organic framework (BMMOF11) using earth-abundant elements, cobalt (Co) and cadmium (Cd). BMMOF11 showcases a distinctive structure with distorted octahedral chains of CoO and CdO, linked by benzene tricarboxylic acid (BTC). Our study primarily investigates the electrocatalytic efficiency of BMMOF11, particularly in water oxidation reactions. For practical analysis, BMMOF11 was anchored onto nickel foam, forming BMMOF11/NF, to evaluate its electrocatalytic properties. Electrochemical testing revealed that BMMOF11/NF begins water oxidation at an onset potential of 1.62 V versus RHE, demonstrating high activity with a lower overpotential of 0.4 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA/cm2. Moreover, BMMOF11/NF maintained stable water splitting performance, sustaining a current density of approximately 70 mA/cm2 under a voltage of 1.9 V relative to RHE. These findings indicate that BMMOF11/NF is a promising candidate for large-scale electrochemical water splitting, offering a blend of high activity and stability.

Tuning Morphologies of Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Ni3P/Ni Carbon Nanocomposites for Water Oxidation

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) frequently acts as a kinetic bottleneck in various energy storage and conversion systems. Effective electrocatalysts for the OER play a crucial role in reducing the reaction barrier and expediting the reaction. Multicomponent transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have garnered an extensive amount of attention as a result of their exceptional performance in the OER. Here, we present a direct method for preparing two intrinsic morphologies of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), barrel-like BMM-10 and pancake-like BMM-10(Ac), achieved by establishing a protonation/deprotonation equilibrium with varying NO3-/Ac- ratios. The BMM-10(Ac)-C catalyst was synthesized via heat treatment of the BMM-10(Ac) precursor, exhibiting superior OER performance. It realized an overpotential of 286 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, with a Tafel slope of 111.17 mV decade-1 and a current retention of 98.03%. This improvement arises from the synergistic interaction between Ni3P/Ni nanoparticles and the partially graphitic carbon layer, augmenting the exposure of active sites. Furthermore, alterations in the morphological features of MOF-derived Ni3P/Ni carbon nanocomposites adjusted the active electrochemical surface area, thereby modulating the overall OER performance of the corresponding TMP carbon nanocomposites. This methodology can be extended to control the morphology of other MOFs and their derivatives, providing innovative avenues for the design and synthesis of new MOF-based TMP nanomaterials.

Controllable construction of ZIF-derived Co9S8 hollow polyporous polyhedrons with Ru-doping for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction

Ru-doped Co9S8 hollow porous polyhedrons (Ru-Co9S8 HPPs) derived from zeolitic-imidazolate-frameworks were synthesized through hydrothermal coprecipitation and thermal decomposition methods. The results indicate that Ru-Co9S8-500 HPPs possess a strong Ru-Co synergistic effect, large electrochemical surface area, and sufficient active sites, endowing them with excellent hydrogen evolution reaction performance.

Rational Construction of 3D Self-Supported MOF-Derived Cobalt Phosphide-Based Hollow Nanowall Arrays for Efficient Overall Water Splitting At large Current Density

Developing efficient nonprecious bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) in the same electrolyte with a low overpotential and large current density presents an appealing yet challenging goal for large-scale water electrolysis. Herein, a unique 3D self-branched hierarchical nanostructure composed of ultra-small cobalt phosphide (CoP) nanoparticles embedded into N, P-codoped carbon nanotubes knitted hollow nanowall arrays (CoPʘNPCNTs HNWAs) on carbon textiles (CTs) through a carbonization-phosphatization process is presented. Benefiting from the uniform protrusion distributions of CoP nanoparticles, the optimum CoPʘNPCNTs HNWAs composites with high abundant porosity exhibit superior electrocatalytic activity and excellent stability for OER in alkaline conditions, as well as for HER in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes, even under large current densities. Furthermore, the assembled CoPʘNPCNTs/CTs||CoPʘNPCNTs/CTs electrolyzer demonstrates exceptional performance, requiring an ultralow cell voltage of 1.50 V to deliver the current density of 10 mA cm-2 for overall water splitting (OWS) with favorable stability, even achieving a large current density of 200 mA cm-2 at a low cell voltage of 1.78 V. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation further reveals that all the C atoms between N and P atoms in CoPʘNPCNTs/CTs act as the most efficient active sites, significantly enhancing the electrocatalytic properties. This strategy, utilizing 2D MOF arrays as a structural and compositional material to create multifunctional composites/hybrids, opens new avenues for the exploration of highly efficient and robust non-noble-metal catalysts for energy-conversion reactions.

Interfacial Engineering of Heterogeneous Reactions for MOF-on-MOF Heterostructures

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a subclass of porous crystalline materials with unique structures and multifunctional properties, play a pivotal role in various research domains. In recent years, significant attention has been directed toward composite materials based on MOFs, particularly MOF-on-MOF heterostructures. Compared to individual MOF materials, MOF-on-MOF structures harness the distinctive attributes of two or more different MOFs, enabling synergistic effects and allowing for the tailored design of diverse multilayered architectures to expand their application scope. However, the rational design and facile synthesis of MOF-on-MOF composite materials are in principle challenging due to the structural diversity and the intricate interfaces. Hence, this review primarily focuses on elucidating the factors that influence their interfacial growth, with a specific emphasis on the interfacial engineering of heterogeneous reactions, in which MOF-on-MOF hybrids can be conveniently obtained by using pre-fabricated MOF precursors. These factors are categorized as internal and external elements, encompassing inorganic metals, organic ligands, lattice matching, nucleation kinetics, thermodynamics, etc. Meanwhile, these intriguing MOF-on-MOF materials offer a wide range of advantages in various application fields, such as adsorption, separation, catalysis, and energy-related applications. Finally, this review highlights current complexities and challenges while providing a forward-looking perspective on future research directions.

Composites of (NH2)-MIL-53(Al) and CBB as bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall electrochemical water splitting in all pH solutions

Electrochemical water splitting is one of the most active areas of energy research, yet the benchmark electrocatalysts used for this area are based on expensive noble metals and transition metals, thus mainly reactions in alkaline solution. MOFs and halide perovskite are novel electrochemical catalysts but unstable in water basically. Here we report a study on composites of (NH2)-MIL-53(Al) MOFs and CBB halide perovskite (Cs3Bi2Br9), which exhibit obvious activity for overall electrochemical water splitting for long-term stability with little deactivation after 10 h in all pH solutions.

1D/3D dual carbon-supported Mott-Schottky-type Co-Co2P heterojunctions for pH-universal hydrogen evolution

The rational design of low-cost, efficient, and stable heterojunction catalysts for pH-universal hydrogen evolution is attracting increasing attention towards a sustainable hydrogen economy. Herein, a sequential spatial restriction-pyrolysis route is developed to confine Mott-Schottky-type Co-Co2P heterojunctions embedded in the one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotube-modified three-dimensional (3D) N,P dual-doped carbon matrix (Co-Co2P@CNT//CM). The synergistic effect between the abundant Mott-Schottky heterointerfaces and the 1D/3D dual carbon confinement system enables fully exposed active sites and facilitated charge transfer dynamics, thus triggering favorable electronic structures of Co-Co2P@CNT//CM. As a result, Co-Co2P@CNT//CM heterojunctions exhibit excellent pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance with overpotentials of 142, 205, and 262 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1.0 M KOH, and 1.0 M phosphate buffer saline (PBS), respectively. The theoretical results demonstrated that the Mott-Schottky effect can induce an oriented interfacial charge exchange between Co and Co2P. This can lower the reactive kinetic barrier and endow Co-Co2P@CNT//CM with ideal hydrogen adsorption free energy, which efficiently drives the production of H2 from electrolytic water.

Insights on MOF-derived metal-carbon nanostructures for oxygen evolution

Electrochemical water splitting has been regarded a promising method for the production of green hydrogen, addressing the need for efficient energy conversion and storage. However, it is severely hindered by the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) because of its multi-step four-electron transfer pathway with sluggish reaction kinetics. Microporous metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs), by virtue of large specific surface area, high porosity, tunable composition and morphology, find widespread use as precursors of metal-carbon nanostructures. The resulting carbon nanomaterials can well inherit the characteristics and advantages of the crystalline MOF precursors, and exhibit versatile application prospects in the fields of environment and energy, particularly in OER. Herein, a meticulous overview of the synthesis strategy for MOF-derived metal-carbon nanostructures and the origins of their enhanced OER properties has been demonstrated. We comprehensively illustrate these aspects across three dimensions: MOF selection, metal introduction, and carbon structures. Finally, the challenges and future prospects for this emerging field will be presented.

Nickel Nanoparticles Protruding from Molybdenum Carbide Micropillars with Carbon Layer-Protected Biphasic 0D/1D Heterostructures for Efficient Water Splitting

It remains a tremendous challenge to achieve high-efficiency bifunctional electrocatalysts for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for hydrogen production by water splitting. Herein, a novel hybrid of 0D nickel nanoparticles dispersed on the one-dimensional (1D) molybdenum carbide micropillars embedded in the carbon layers (Ni/Mo2C@C) was successfully prepared on nickel foam by a facile pyrolysis strategy. During the synthesis process, the nickel nanoparticles and molybdenum carbide were simultaneously generated under H2 and C2H2 mixed atmospheres and conformally encapsulated in the carbon layers. Benefiting from the distinctive 0D/1D heterostructure and the synergistic effect of the biphasic Mo2C and Ni together with the protective effect of the carbon layer, the reduced activation energy barriers and fast catalytic reaction kinetics can be achieved, resulting in a small overpotential of 96 mV for the HER and 266 mV for the OER at the current density of 10 mA cm-2 together with excellent durability in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. In addition, using the developed Ni/Mo2C@C as both the cathode and anode, the constructed electrolyzer exhibits a small voltage of 1.55 V for the overall water splitting. The novel designed Ni/Mo2C@C may give inspiration for the development of efficient bifunctional catalysts with low-cost transition metal elements for water splitting.

Synthesis, characterization of MOF NiCoZn-LDH@GO on carbon cloth as sensitive and novel nanocomposite applied to electrospun nanofibers network as thin-film microextraction sorbent for detection trace amount of opioid and analgesic drugs from biological fluids

Today, the widespread use of opioid and analgesic drugs (OAs) has caused global concern due to their addictive properties and side effects. Therefore, in this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/poly acrylic acid (PAA)/MOF NiCoZn-LDH@graphene oxide (GO) electrospun nanofiber was synthesized and employed as an effective and novel sorbent at thin-film microextraction (TF-μSPE) method for the fast and simultaneous extraction of seven opioid and analgesic drugs in human biological fluids (plasma, urine) before performing quantitative analysis by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC-UV) device. This new nano-absorbent was characterized by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), Fourier transforms infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and nitrogen absorption-desorption analysis (BET). The combination of MOF NiCoZn-LDH@GO with a highly porous structure and rich functional groups in the PVA/PAA substrate casing significantly improves the absorption properties of the nanofibers. In other words, the existence, of MOF NiCoZn-LDH@GO composite in the polymer network PVA/PAA causes an increase in the extraction efficiency of the electrospinning adsorbent due to the creation of hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions with the intended analytes. Various effective factors in the extraction efficiency of the desired analytes were optimized using a one-variable-at-a-time method. Under the optimum conditions, the linearity dynamic range was achieved in the range of 0.3-1000.0 for caffeine, naloxone, noscapine, and celecoxib, and 0.5-1000.0 μg L-1 for tramadol, codeine, and hydrocodone with correlation coefficients ≥0.999. The lowest detection limit (LODs) and the lowest quantitative limit (LOQs) of the TF-μSPE method were obtained in the range of (0.1-0.15) and (0.3-0.5), respectively.

Thermally-activated gelatin-chitosan-MOF hybrid aerogels for efficient removal of ibuprofen and naproxen

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most frequently used drugs and have been frequently detected in aquatic environments. This paper demonstrates a thermally-activated gelatin-chitosan and amine-functionalized metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH2) aerogel (CGC-MOF), which was successfully synthesized for the efficient removal of ibuprofen (IBP) and naproxen (NPX). Various characterization tools were used to systematically analyze the microstructure and physicochemical properties of the synthesized aerogel. In addition, the effect of key reaction parameters as well as batch and continuous-flow fixed-bed column experiments were carried out to elucidate the adsorption process. Several functional groups in the biopolymer network, combined with excellent MOF properties, synergistically couple to form an adsorbent with great performance. The mesoporous aerogel activated at 200 °C (CGC-MOF200) exhibited a high specific surface area (819.6 m2/g) that is valuable in providing abundant adsorption active sites that facilitate the efficient adsorption of IBP and NPX. CGC-MOF200 exhibited an excellent removal of IBP and NPX, accounting to 99.28 % and 96.39 %, respectively. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm models, suggesting heterogeneous and chemisorption adsorption processes. Overall, this work provides new and valuable insights into the development of a promising biopolymer-MOF composite aerogel for environmental remediation.

In-based coordination polymer-derived carbon nanoribbons with abundant CoP nanoparticles in carbon nanotubes for water oxidation

The sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in overall electrocatalytic water splitting poses a significant challenge in hydrogen production. A series of transition metal phosphides are emerging as promising electrocatalysts, effectively modulating the charge distribution of surrounding atoms for OER. In this study, a highly efficient OER electrocatalyst (CoP-CNR-CNT) was successfully synthesized through the pyrolysis and phosphatization of a Co-doped In-based coordination polymer, specifically InOF-25. This process resulted in evenly dispersed CoP nanoparticles encapsulated in coordination polymer-derived carbon nanoribbons. The synthesized CoP-CNR-CNT demonstrated a competitive OER activity with a smaller overpotential (η10) of 295.7 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a satisfactory long-term stability compared to the state-of-the-art RuO2 (η10 = 353.7 mV). The high OER activity and stability can be attributed to the high conductivity of the carbon network, the abundance of CoP particles, and the intricate nanostructure of nanoribbons/nanotubes. This work provides valuable insights into the rational design and facile preparation of efficient non-precious metal-based OER electrocatalysts from inorganic-organic coordination polymers, with potential applications in various energy conversion and storage systems.

Anion-induced electronic localization and polarized cobalt clusters for highly efficient water splitting

It is a promising pathway to use anions to regulate electronic structures, reasonably design and construct highly efficient catalysts for water splitting. Herein, a N-regulated Co cluster catalyst confined in carbon nanotubes, N-Co NCNTs, was constructed successfully. Nitrogen anions played a crucial role in optimizing the electronic structures of Co clusters and enhancing localization of electrons, resulting in polarized cobalt clusters. The N-induced electronic localization and the resulting polarized Co clusters are responsible for the improvement of catalytic activity. N-Co NCNTs exhibited ultra-low overpotentials of 178 mV and 92 mV for the OER and HER to achieve 10 mA cm-2 in an alkaline electrolyte, respectively. Its long-term catalytic durability is mainly attributed to the obstacle to the surface oxidation of Co clusters caused by N-regulation. N-Co NCNTs maintained a stable current density for 160 h at 10 mA cm-2. DFT computations confirmed the decisive role played by nitrogen anions in regulating the electronic structure. This work provides a pathway for understanding and designing highly efficient anion-regulated catalysts.

Application of Conductive MOF in Zinc-Based Batteries

The use of conductive MOFs (c-MOFs) in zinc-based batteries has been a popular research direction. Zinc-based batteries are widely used with the advantages of high specific capacity and safety and stability, but they also face many problems. c-MOFs have excellent conductivity compared with other primitive MOFs, and therefore have better applications in zinc-based batteries. In this paper, the transfer mechanisms of the unique charges of c-MOFs: hop transport and band transport, respectively, are discussed and the way of electron transport is further addressed. Then, the various ways to prepare c-MOFs are introduced, among which solvothermal, interfacial synthesis, and postprocessing methods are widely used. In addition, the applications of c-MOFs are discussed in terms of their role and performance in different types of zinc-based batteries. Finally, the current problems of c-MOFs and the prospects for their future development are presented.

Self-supporting electrocatalyst constructed from in-situ transformation of Co(OH)2 to metal-organic framework to Co/CoP/NC nanosheets for high-current-density water splitting

Transition metal phosphide (TMP) emerges as a promising electrocatalyst for overall water splitting (OWS). However, conventional TMP materials require exogenous metal ions to participate in coordination reactions, which usually suffer from active site blocking, pronounced intrinsic impedance, and inevitable catalyst shedding at high current density. Herein, a novel in-situ construction strategy has been developed to grow N-doped carbon (NC) enwrapped Co/CoP nanosheets directly onto Co foam (abbreviated as CoF) through a three-step transformation of Co to Co(OH)₂ to Co-Metal-Organic Framework (Co-MOF) to Co/CoP/NC. In the entire preparation process, Co metal is only provided by the CoF substrate without external metal sources. Such in-situ construction yields tight contact at the interface of the heterogeneous catalyst, leading to much-reduced impedance and boundary vacancy, while the porous nitrogen-doped carbon backbone further endows the catalyst with the exposure of massive active sites, promotes mass transfer, and possesses high electrical conductivity. The Co/CoP/NC/CoF requires overpotentials of only 64 mV/263 mV@10 mA cm^-2 and 414 mV/481 mV@400 mA cm^-2 for both HER/OER in 1.0 M KOH, respectively. Remarkably, it reveals excellent OWS catalytic activity with a cell voltage of 1.56 V@10 mA cm^-2 and 1.88 V@200 mA cm^-2. This strategy of in-situ interface engineering transformation provides new ideas for direct device processing and construction of highly-efficient transition-metal-based OWS electrode materials.

MOF-on-MOF-Derived Hollow Co3 O4 /In2 O3 Nanostructure for Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The photocatalytic transformation of carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) into carbon-based fuels or chemicals using sustainable solar energy is considered an ideal strategy for simultaneously alleviating the energy shortage and environmental crises. However, owing to the low energy utilization of sunlight and inferior catalytic activity, the conversion efficiency of CO₂ photoreduction is far from satisfactory. In this study, a MOF-derived hollow bimetallic oxide nanomaterial is prepared for the efficient photoreduction of CO₂ . First, a unique ZIF-67-on-InOF-1 heterostructure is successfully obtained by growing a secondary Co-based ZIF-67 onto the initial InOF-1 nanorods. The corresponding hollow counterpart has a larger specific surface area after acid etching, and the oxidized bimetallic H-Co₃ O₄ /In₂ O₃ material exhibits abundant heterogeneous interfaces that expose more active sites. The energy band structure of H-Co₃ O₄ /In₂ O₃ corresponds well with the photosensitizer of [Ru(bpy)₃ ]Cl₂ , which results in a high CO yield of 4828 ± 570 µmol h^-1  g^-1 and stable activity over a consecutive of six runs, demonstrating adequate photocatalytic performance. This study demonstrates that the rational design of MOF-on-MOF heterostructures can completely exploit the synergistic effects between different components, which may be extended to other MOF-derived nanomaterials as promising catalysts for practical energy conversion and storage.

Hybrid Heterostructure Ni3 N|NiFeP/FF Self-Supporting Electrode for High-Current-Density Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Exploring earth-abundant and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an urgent need and significant to water electrolysis. Although great achievements have been made, it is still challenging to achieve industrial current density and stability. Herein, a hybrid heterostructure electrode based on Ni₃ N and NiFeP over Fe foam substrate (Ni₃ N|NiFeP/FF) is reported, along with 3D-interconnected hierarchical porous architecture, achieving the low overpotentials of 287, 178, and 290 mV at 500 mA cm^-2 in 1 m KOH, 30 wt% KOH, and alkaline simulated seawater, respectively, with excellent durability at 800 mA cm^-2 over 120 h, which can satisfy the requirements of industrial water electrolysis. Here, the hybrid heterostructure can ensure the low energy barrier of the catalytic active sites, the 3D-interconnected hierarchical porous architecture can facilitate the fast mass/ions/electrons transformation, which contributes together to boost the superb water splitting performance. Furthermore, the COMSOL simulations confirm the multiple merits of the designed electrode during the water electrocatalysis. The present work provides a new strategy in the design and engineering of high-performance electrodes for industrial water electrolysis.

Intelligent Chip-Controlled Smart Oxygen Electrodes for Constructing Rechargeable Zinc-Air Batteries with Excellent Energy Efficiency and Durability

High-performance rechargeable oxygen electrodes are key devices for realizing high-specific-energy batteries, including zinc-air and lithium-air batteries. However, these batteries have severe problems of premature decay in energy efficiency by serious corrosion, wide charge-discharge gap, and catalyst peeling off. Herein, we propose a "smart dual-oxygen electrode", which is composed of an intelligent switch control module + heterostructured Fe₁Ni₃-LDH/PNCNF OER catalysis electrode layer + ion conductive | electronic insulating membrane + Pt/C ORR catalysis electrode layer, where OER and ORR layers are automatically switched by the intelligent switch control module as required. This smart dual-oxygen electrode offers an ultralow energy efficiency decay rate of 0.0067% after 300 cycles during cycling, much lower than that of the commercial Pt/C electrode (1.82%). The assembled rechargeable zinc-air battery (RZAB) displays a super narrow voltage gap and achieves a high energy efficiency of 71.7%, far higher than that of the existing RZABs (about 50%). Therefore, this strategy provides a complete solution for designing various high-performance metal-air secondary batteries.

Metal-Organic Framework Derived Ni2P/FeP@NPC Heterojunction as Stability Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Large Current Density Water Splitting

The construction of heterojunction has been widely accepted as a prospective strategy for the exploration of non-precious metal-based catalysts that possess high-performance to achieve electrochemical water splitting. Herein, we design and prepare a metal-organic framework derived N, P-doped-carbon-encapsulated Ni₂P/FeP nanorod with heterojunction (Ni₂P/FeP@NPC) for accelerating the water splitting and working stably at industrially relevant high current densities. Electrochemical results confirmed that Ni₂P/FeP@NPC could both accelerate the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. It could substantially expedite the overall water splitting (1.94 V for 100 mA cm^-2) which is close to the performance of RuO₂ and the Pt/C couple (1.92 V for 100 mA cm^-2). In particular, the durability test exhibited that Ni₂P/FeP@NPC delivers 500 mA cm^-2 without decay after 200 h, demonstrating the great potential for large-scale applications. Furthermore, the density functional theory simulations demonstrated that the heterojunction interface could give rise to the redistribution of electrons, which could not only optimize the adsorption energy of H-containing intermediates to achieve the optimal ΔG_H* in a hydrogen evolution reaction, but also reduce the ΔG value in the rate-determining step of an oxygen evolution reaction, thus improving the HER/OER performance.

Superstructures of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks to Single- and Multiatom Sites for Electrochemical Energy Conversion

The exploration of electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and long-term stability for electrochemical energy conversion is significant yet remains challenging. Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived superstructures are a source of atomic-site-containing electrocatalysts. These atomic sites anchor the guest encapsulation and self-assembly of aspheric polyhedral particles produced using microreactor fabrication. This review provides an overview of ZIF-derived superstructures by highlighting some of the key structural types, such as open carbon cages, 1D superstructures, hollow structures, and the interconversion of superstructures. The fundamentals and representative structures are outlined to demonstrate the role of superstructures in the construction of materials with atomic sites, such as single- and dual-atom materials. Then, the roles of ZIF-derived single-atom sites for the electroreduction of CO₂ and electrochemical synthesis of H₂ O₂ are discussed, and their electrochemical performance for energy conversion is outlined. Finally, the perspective on advancing single- and dual-atom electrode-based electrochemical processes with enhanced redox activity and a low-impedance charge-transfer pathway for cathodes is provided. The challenges associated with ZIF-derived superstructures for electrochemical energy conversion are discussed.

In-MOF-Derived Hierarchically Hollow Carbon Nanostraws for Advanced Zinc-Iodine Batteries

Hollow carbon materials are regarded as crucial support materials in catalysis and electrochemical energy storage on account of their unique porous structure and electrical properties. Herein, an indium-based organic framework of InOF-1 can be thermally carbonized under inert argon to form indium particles through the redox reaction between nanosized indium oxide and carbon matrix. In particular, a type of porous hollow carbon nanostraw (HCNS) is in situ obtained by combining the fusion and removal of indium within the decarboxylation process. The as-synthesized HCNS, which possesses more charge active sites, short and quick electron, and ion transport pathways, has become an excellent carrier for electrochemically active species such as iodine with its unique internal cavity and interconnected porous structure on the tube wall. Furthermore, the assembled zinc-iodine batteries (ZIBs) provide a high capacity of 234.1 mAh g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 , which ensures that the adsorption and dissolution of iodine species in the electrolyte reach a rapid equilibrium. The rate and cycle performance of the HCNS-based ZIBs are greatly improved, thereby exhibiting an excellent capacity retention rate. It shows a better electrochemical exchange capacity than typical unidirectional carbon nanotubes, making HCNS an ideal cathode material for a new generation of high-performance batteries.

Engineering hierarchically ZnS/NiS/NiS2 hollow porous urchin-like composite towards exceptional lithium storage

Complex hollow structure nanostructure is regarded as the desired approach to alleviating the volume change of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this work, ZnS/NiS/NiS₂ composite with a distinctive hierarchical hollow porous urchin-like structure was prepared through pyrolysis of bimetal-organic frameworks obtained by one-step solvothermal and firstly used as anodes for LIBs. Varying the metal molar ratios allows the control of the surface area and pore size distribution of ZnS/NiS/NiS₂. The obtained composite with a hollow porous urchin-like structure exhibits high porosity, large specific surface area, and strong synergetic interaction between ZnS and NiS/NiS₂ can greatly buffer the volume expansion to keep the mechanical stability, ensure sufficient contact region between electrolyte and electrodes and shorten the Li⁺ transfer distance, meanwhile, the carbon derived from organic ligand of bimetal-organic frameworks also constructs the conductive matrix to accelerate electrons transfer. Based on the above outstanding properties, the obtained material delivers excellent rate capacity, superior reversible capacity, and long-cycle stability, especially disclosing a capacity of 615 mAh·g^-1 after 300 cycles at 2 A·g^-1. This work proposes a feasible strategy to obtain a unique hollow porous urchin-like structure through pyrolysis of bimetal organic frameworks, it can be extended to fabricate other mixed metal sulfides nanostructures with excellent electrochemical performances.

Iron-doped novel Co-based metal-organic frameworks for preparation of bifunctional catalysts with an amorphous structure for OER/HER in alkaline solution

A novel two-dimensional Co-MOF material {[Co(dptz)₂(oba)₂]·(DMF)₂}_n is prepared using mixed organic ligands, which exhibits both OER (oxygen evolution reaction) and HER (hydrogen evolution reaction) catalytic performance. The integration of an Fe dopant and amorphous interface into Co-MOF to improving the electrocatalytic performance of pristine MOFs (metal-organic frameworks) is demonstrated and the origin of the remarkable electrocatalytic performance of the catalyst is elucidated. The comprehensive characterization data of Fe@Co-MOFs illustrate that there is a crystallinity transition during the doping of Co-MOF, which increases the electron transfer rate of the material and ensures increased exposure of the ligand unsaturated active site on the surface, and modulates the electronic structure of the Co center in a synergistic manner. As a result, the optimized catalytic Fe@Co-MOF-3 with an amorphous structure exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic performance for the OER, with only 248 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm^-2 and excellent stability after 11 h of testing in alkaline solution. Not only that, the HER was achieved with a low overpotential of 150 mV at 10 mA cm^-2. The present work indicates that the as-synthesized Co-MOF and Fe@Co-MOFs offer prospects in developing electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Probing Dynamic Self-Reconstruction on Perovskite Fluorides toward Ultrafast Oxygen Evolution

Exploring low cost, highly active, and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of prime importance to boost energy conversion efficiency. Perovskite fluorides are emerging as alternative electrocatalysts for OER, however, their intrinsically active sites during real operation are still elusive. Herein, the self-reconstruction on newly designed NiFe coupled perovskite fluorides during OER process is demonstrated. In situ Raman spectroscopy, ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and theoretical calculation reveal that Fe incorporation can significantly activate the self-reconstruction of perovskite fluorides and efficiently lower the energy barrier of OER. Benefiting from self-reconstruction and low energy barrier, the KNi_0.8 Fe_0.2 F₃ @nickel foam (KNFF2@NF) electrocatalyst delivers an ultralow overpotential of 258 mV to afford 100 mA cm^-2 and an excellent durability for 100 h, favorably rivaling most the state-of-the-art OER electrocatalysts. This protocol provides the fundamental understanding on OER mechanism associated with surface reconstruction for perovskite fluorides.

Synergistic effect of Mn doping and hollow structure boosting Mn-CoP/Co2P nanotubes as efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

The sluggish kinetic of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) severely hampers the commercial application of electrochemical water splitting, promoting the urgent exploration of high-efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts. Heteroatom doping and structure engineering have been identified as the most effective strategies to boost the catalytic activity of electrocatalysts. Herein, Mn doping and hollow structure were integrated in the design of Co-based transition metal phosphide catalyst to prepare Mn-CoP/Co₂P nanotubes (denoted as Mn-CP NTs) by a facile template-free method. Confirmed by characterization analysis, the introduced Mn species were in high dispersion in the regular CoP/Co₂P hollow tubular framework. Such a favorable design in composition and structure effectively boosted the catalytic activity of Mn-CP NTs toward electrochemical water splitting. The Mn-CP NTs showed superior HER and OER activity demonstrated by the low overpotentials of 82 mV (vs HER) and 309 mV (vs OER) at the current density of 10 mA cm^-2, as well as the satisfactory durability. When used as both cathode and anode in electrolyzer for overall water splitting, only a low cell voltage of 1.67 V was required for the Mn-CP NTs to drive 10 mA cm^-2, accompanied with excellent stability confirmed by over 50 h test.

Synthesis of NiSe2 /Fe3 O4 Nanotubes with Heteroepitaxy Configuration as a High-Efficient Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalyst

The rational design of high-efficient non-noble metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is of significance in electrochemical energy conversion. However, such low-cost but highly active electrocatalysts remain poorly developed because of the daunting synthetic challenge. Here, the synthesis of NiSe₂ /Fe₃ O₄ nanotubes via a facile self-templating strategy, which manifests unique tetragonal morphology, asymmetric hollow interior, and unusual but adaptable heteroepitaxy structure, is reported. Benefiting from sufficient active sites and their improved activity around the heterointerface, accompanied by the good conductivity, the NiSe₂ /Fe₃ O₄ nanotubes exhibit as a superior OER electrocatalyst, which affords the current density of 10 mA cm^-2 at a very small overpotential of 199 mV, high attainable current density beyond 200 mA cm^-2 , and mass activity of 984.5 A g^-1 , as well as excellent stability for 100 h in the alkaline media. This work provides a unique synthetic pathway to fabricate superior OER electrocatalysts by optimizing their composition and architecture.

A yolk-shell structure construction for metal-organic frameworks toward an enhanced electrochemical water splitting catalysis

NiFe-based transition metal catalysts are widely used in electrocatalysis, especially in the field of water splitting, due to their excellent electrochemical performance. Herein, a simple method was designed to synthesize a Ni MOF based on nickel foam and it was modified with Fe. After the introduction of Fe, the resulting material exhibits an obvious yolk-shell structure, which greatly increases the specific surface area and facilitates the construction of active sites. At the same time, the synergy between Ni and Fe is conducive to optimizing the electronic structure and effectively improving the poor stability of the MOF. As a result, the synthesized Ni MOF-Fe-2 only needs an overpotential of 229 mV to achieve the OER at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2, which is better than most reported transition metal-based electrocatalysts. To our surprise, it showed extraordinary stability under the voltage used for water splitting.

ZIF-67-derived nanoframes as efficient bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting in alkaline medium

In order to lower energy consumption it is critical to develop highly efficient and stable non-precious metal bifunctional catalysts. In this study, we found that rational design of novel nanostructures is able to increase the number of active sites, conductivity and accelerate electron transfer, thus promoting enhanced performance of the catalyst. We successfully synthesized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) containing a hollow polyhedral (CNTHPs) structure through annealing, etching and phosphating. The unique hollow shape not only provides a stable structure but also facilitates mass and charge transfer. Thus, CoP/CNTHPs can catalyze the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions effectively with overpotentials of 147 and 238 mV at 10 mA cm^-2. Simultaneously, CoP/CNTHPs only needs a voltage of 1.54 V to attain a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in the electrocatalytic water splitting process, demonstrating its bifunctional activity. Furthermore, the electrolytic catalytic performance does not weaken significantly after 12 hours of electrolysis, demonstrating excellent stability. Overall, this research offers useful insights into rational design of high-performance non-noble metal catalysts.

Nanostructured Metal Phosphide Based Catalysts for Electrochemical Water Splitting: A Review

Amongst various futuristic renewable energy sources, hydrogen fuel is deemed to be clean and sustainable. Electrochemical water splitting (EWS) is an advanced technology to produce pure hydrogen in a cost-efficient manner. The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are the vital steps of EWS and have been at the forefront of research over the past decades. The low-cost nanostructured metal phosphide (MP)-based electrocatalysts exhibit unconventional physicochemical properties and offer very high turnover frequency (TOF), low over potential, high mass activity with improved efficiency, and long-term stability. Therefore, they are deemed to be potential electrocatalysts to meet practical challenges for supporting the future hydrogen economy. This review discusses the recent research progress in nanostructured MP-based catalysts with an emphasis given on in-depth understanding of catalytic activity and innovative synthetic strategies for MP-based catalysts through combined experimental (in situ/operando techniques) and theoretical investigations. Finally, the challenges, critical issues, and future outlook in the field of MP-based catalysts for water electrolysis are addressed.

Large-Scale Synthesis of Spinel Nix Mn3-x O4 Solid Solution Immobilized with Iridium Single Atoms for Efficient Alkaline Seawater Electrolysis

Seawater electrolysis not only affords a promising approach to produce clean hydrogen fuel but also alleviates the bottleneck of freshwater feeds. Here, a novel strategy for large-scale preparing spinel Ni_x Mn_3-x O₄ solid solution immobilized with iridium single-atoms (Ir-SAs) is developed by the sol-gel method. Benefitting from the surface-exposed Ir-SAs, Ir₁ /Ni_1.6 Mn_1.4 O₄ reveals boosted oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, achieving overpotentials of 330 and 350 mV at current densities of 100 and 200 mA cm^-2 in alkaline seawater. Moreover, only a cell voltage of 1.50 V is required to reach 500 mA cm^-2 with assembled Ir₁ /Ni_1.6 Mn_1.4 O₄ ‖Pt/C electrode pair under the industrial operating condition. The experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations highlight the effect of Ir-SAs on improving the intrinsic OER activity and facilitating surface charge transfer kinetics, and evidence the energetically stabilized *OOH and the destabilized chloride ion adsorption in Ir₁ /Ni_1.6 Mn_1.4 O₄ . This work demonstrates an effective method to produce efficient alkaline seawater electrocatalyst massively.

MOF-Derived Ultrathin Cobalt Molybdenum Phosphide Nanosheets for Efficient Electrochemical Overall Water Splitting

The development of high-performance and cost-effective earth-abundant transition metal-based electrocatalysts is of major interest for several key energy technologies, including water splitting. Herein, we report the synthesis of ultrathin CoMoP nanosheets through a simple ion etching and phosphorization method. The obtained catalyst exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic activity and stability towards oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER), with overpotentials down to 273 and 89 mV at 10 mA cm⁻², respectively. The produced CoMoP nanosheets are also characterized by very small Tafel slopes, 54.9 and 69.7 mV dec⁻¹ for OER and HER, respectively. When used as both cathode and anode electrocatalyst in the overall water splitting reaction, CoMoP-based cells require just 1.56 V to reach 10 mA cm⁻² in alkaline media. This outstanding performance is attributed to the proper composition, weak crystallinity and two-dimensional nanosheet structure of the electrocatalyst.

Critical Review, Recent Updates on Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67 (ZIF-67) and Its Derivatives for Electrochemical Water Splitting

Design and construction of low-cost electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and long-term stability is a challenging task in the field of catalysis. Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) are promising candidates as precursor materials in the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for energy conversion and storage applications. This review starts with a summary of basic concepts and key evaluation parameters involved in the electrochemical water-splitting reaction. Then, different synthesis approaches reported for the cobalt-based Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) and its derivatives are critically reviewed. Additionally, several strategies employed to enhance the electrocatalytic activity and stability of ZIF-67-based electrocatalysts are discussed in detail. The present review provides a succinct insight into the ZIF-67 and its derivatives (oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, selenides, phosphide, nitrides, telluride, heteroatom/metal-doped carbon, noble metal-supported ZIF-67 derivatives) reported for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and overall water splitting applications. Finally, this review concludes with the associated challenges and the perspectives on developing the best economic, durable electrocatalytic materials.

Formation of carnation-like ZIF-9 nanostructure to achieve superior electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Rational design and controllable synthesis of metal-organic frameworks nanosheets is critical for electrochemical catalysis. Herein, a carnation-like ZIF-9 nanostructure made of nanosheets is grown on nickel foam (ZIF-9/NF) by a simple one-step solvothermal method, the morphology evolution and the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution properties have been investigated by controlling the solvothermal time. The binder-free ZIF-9-d/NF (60 h, solvothermal time is 60 h) electrode delivers efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction activity with low overpotentials of 312 and 337 mV at 50 and 100 mA cm^-2, respectively. Furthermore, ZIF-9-d/NF (60 h) exhibits excellent stability without obvious attenuation for at least 30 h at 200 mA cm^-2. The excellent performances can be attributed to the combination of the highly exposed active sites in the ZIF-9-d nanosheets, as well as the effective electron conduction and mass transfer. This work provides much possibilities for ZIF-9 nanosheets as binder-free electrode for electrocatalyst.

CeO2 decorated bimetallic phosphide nanowire arrays for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysis via interface engineering

To realize electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production, the development of efficient and durable anode materials containing earth-abundant elements is of great significance. In this work, we demonstrate a novel heterostructure with easily depositing CeO₂ nanoparticles on the surface of the metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived Co_0.4Ni_1.6P nanowire arrays. Such an interface engineering strategy triggers the formation of abundant oxygen vacancies and provides more electrocatalytically active sites. Besides, the synergistic effect in this composite can regulate the electronic structure, and lead to an enhanced charge-transfer ability. Benefiting from the above superiorities, this heterostructure exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic performance towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH electrolyte, requiring overpotentials (η) of 268 and 343 mV to yield current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm^-2, respectively, accompanied by a low Tafel slope of 79.3 mV dec^-1. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic performance of this heterostructure for the OER in simulated alkaline seawater (1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl) was also studied, and it achieved low η values of 345 and 394 mV to drive 100 and 200 mA cm^-2, respectively. This work presents a simple approach to fabricate heterostructural electrocatalysts with CeO₂ nanoparticles for high-performance water/seawater electrolysis.

MOF-on-MOF Strategy to Construct a Nitrogen-Doped Carbon-Incorporated CoP@Fe-CoP Core-Shelled Heterostructure for High-Performance Overall Water Splitting

The design and preparation of efficient and low-cost catalysts for water electrolysis are crucial and highly desirable to produce eco-friendly and sustainable hydrogen fuel. Herein, we prepared nitrogen-doped carbon-incorporated CoP@Fe-CoP core-shelled nanorod arrays grown on Ni foam (CoP@Fe-CoP/NC/NF) through phosphorization of ZIF-67@Co-Fe Prussian blue analogue (ZIF-67@CoFe-PBA). The hierarchical nanorod arrays combined with the core-shelled structure offer favorable mass/electron transport capacity and maximize the active sites, thus enhancing the electrochemically active surface area. The synergistic effect of the bimetallic components and the nitrogen-doped carbon matrix endow the composite with an optimized electronic structure. Benefiting from the above superiorities of morphological and chemical compositions, this self-supported CoP@Fe-CoP/NC/NF heterostructure can drive alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction with overpotentials of 97 and 270 mV to yield 100 mA cm^-2, respectively. The two-electrode alkaline electrolyzer constructed by this heterostructure shows a low cell voltage of 1.58 V to yield 10 mA cm^-2, superior to the precious-metal-based electrocatalyst apparatus (IrO₂∥Pt/C). This study offers a feasible and facile approach to develop efficient electrocatalysts for water electrolysis, which applies to other electrochemical energy conversion and storage applications.

Self-supporting CoP-C nanosheet arrays derived from a metal-organic framework as synergistic catalysts for efficient water splitting

Here, a new strategy that combines accessible active sites and multiphase synergy in a simple process is developed for constructing bifunctional electrocatalysts toward overall water splitting. By using metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets hydrothermally grown on pre-oxidized nickel foam (denoted by Co₂(OH)₂(BDC)/NiO/NF) as a precursor, two novel heterogeneous nanosheet arrays including a cobalt phosphide nanoparticle embedded carbon nanotube nanosheet array supported by phosphorized nickel foam (denoted by CoP-CNT/Ni₂P/NF) and a cobalt phosphide nanorod decorated carbon nanosheet array supported by oxidized nickel foam (denoted by CoP-C/NiO/NF) are prepared. Both were confirmed to be highly efficient for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. In particular, CoP-C/NiO/NF exhibits higher catalytic activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (η₁₀₀ = -131 mV), promoted by the synergy of oxidized nickel foam. CoP-CNT/Ni₂P/NF performs better in the oxygen evolution reaction (η₅₀ = 301 mV), benefiting mainly from its improved electrochemically active surface area. The two catalysts match well in overall water splitting with satisfactory activity (η₁₀ = 1.57 V) and stability when directly applied in a two-electrode cell. This method will bring new inspiration to maximize the electrocatalytic efficiency of MOF-derived catalysts for energy conversion applications in the future.
