Old Materials for New Functions: Recent Progress on Metal Cyanide Based Porous Materials

Exploring affinity between organic probes and Prussian Blue Analogues via inverse gas chromatography

Prussian Blue Analogues (PBAs), which are characterized by their open structure, high stability, and non-toxic properties, have recently been the subject of research for various applications, including their use as electrode precursors for capacitive deionization, gas storage, and environmental purification. These materials can be readily tailored to enhance their affinity towards gases for integration with sensing devices. An improved understanding of PBA-gas interactions is expected to enhance material development and existing sensor deposition schemes greatly. The use of inverse gas chromatography (IGC) is a robust approach for examining the relationship between porous materials and gases. In this study, the adsorption properties of (functionalized) hydrocarbons, i.e., probe molecules, on the copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) lattice were studied via IGC, demonstrating that alkylbenzenes have a higher affinity for this material than n-alkanes. This difference was rationalized by steric hindrance, π-π interactions, and vapour pressure effects. Along the same line, the five isomers of hexane showed decreasing selectivity upon increased steric hindrance. Enthalpy values for n-pentane, n-hexane and n-heptane were lower than that of toluene. The introduction of increased probe masses resulted in a surface coverage of 46% for toluene. For all n-alkane probe molecules this percentage was lower. However, the isotherms of these probes did not show saturation points and the observed linear regime proves beneficial for gas sensing. Our work demonstrates the versatility of CuHCF for gas sensing purposes and the potential of IGC to characterize the adsorption characteristics of such a porous nanomaterial.

First-Principles Calculations with Six Structures of Alkaline Earth Metal Cyanide A(CN)2 (A = Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba): Structural, Electrical, and Phonon Properties

This work examines six structures (P4̅3m, P4₂ nm, R3m, P2₁/c, R3̅m, and C2/m) of alkaline earth metal cyanide A(CN)₂ (A = Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) using first-principles calculations. The symmetries of P4̅3m, P4₂ nm, and R3m reflect a variation of Pn3̅m, previously reported as occurring on Be(CN)₂ and Mg(CN)₂ in X-ray diffraction studies, while the symmetries of P2₁/c, R3̅m, and C2/m were selected from the P3̅m1 symmetry found using Mg(OH)₂ as the initial structures, with -OH being replaced by -CN. The band structure, density of states, and phonon properties of all A(CN)₂ structures were then investigated using density functional theory (DFT), with a generalized gradient approximation (GGA) applied for the exchange and correlation energy values. The simulation results for the phonon spectra indicate that the stable structures are Be(CN)₂ (P4̅3m, P4₂ nm, and C2/m), Mg(CN)₂ (P4̅3m, P4₂ nm, and C2/m), Ca(CN)₂ (P2₁/c), Sr(CN)₂ (P2₁/c and R3̅m), and Ba(CN)₂ (R3̅m) at 0 GPa. For the effects of high pressure, Ca(CN)₂ and Sr(CN)₂ were thus found to be stable as C2/m at pressures above 10 and 3 GPa, respectively, while Ca(CN)₂ is as stable as R3̅m above 15 GPa. In the calculated band structures, all of the compounds with the C2/m structure demonstrated good conductivity, while the other structures have a band gap range of 2.83-6.33 eV.

A Ferroelectric Aminophosphonium Cyanoferrate with a Large Electrostrictive Coefficient as a Piezoelectric Nanogenerator

Hybrid materials possessing piezo- and ferroelectric properties emerge as excellent alternatives to conventional piezoceramics due to their merits of facile synthesis, lightweight nature, ease of fabrication and mechanical flexibility. Inspired by the structural stability of aminophosphonium compounds, here we report the first A₃ BX₆ type cyanometallate [Ph₂ (ⁱ PrNH)₂ P]₃ [Fe(CN)₆ ] (1), which shows a ferroelectric saturation polarization (P_s ) of 3.71 μC cm^-2 . Compound 1 exhibits a high electrostrictive coefficient (Q₃₃ ) of 0.73 m⁴  C^-2 , far exceeding those of piezoceramics (0.034-0.096 m⁴  C^-2 ). Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) analysis demonstrates the polarization switching and domain structure of 1 further confirming its ferroelectric nature. Furthermore, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) polymer composite films of 1 were prepared and employed as piezoelectric nanogenerators. Notably, the 15 wt % 1-TPU device gave a maximum output voltage of 13.57 V and a power density of 6.03 μW cm^-2 .

Polymorphs and solid solutions: materials with new luminescent properties obtained through mechanochemical transformation of dicyanoaurate(I) salts

We report the use of mechano- and thermochemical methods to create new solid-state luminescent materials from well-known inorganic salts, potassium dicyanoaurate(I) KAu(CN)₂, and potassium dicyanocuprate(I) KCu(CN)₂. In particular, manual grinding or ball milling of commercial samples of KAu(CN)₂ led to the formation of a novel polymorph of the salt, herein termed m-KAu(CN)₂, evident by a significant change in color of the fluorescence emission of the solid material from orange to violet. The formation of m-KAu(CN)₂ is reversible upon addition of small amounts of solvents, and powder X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the structure of m-KAu(CN)₂ might be related to that of pristine KAu(CN)₂ through a change in ordering of Au(CN)₂^- ions in a layered structure. Thermal treatment of KAu(CN)₂ led to the discovery of another polymorph of this well-known salt, herein termed t-KAu(CN)₂, making KAu(CN)₂ a rare example of a system in which thermochemical and mechanochemical treatments lead to the formation of different, in each case previously not reported, polymorphic forms. The thermally-induced transformation from KAu(CN)₂ to t-KAu(CN)₂ takes place around 250 °C and proceeds in a crystal-to-crystal fashion, which enabled the preliminary structural characterisation through single crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing the retention of the layered structure and a change in ordering of Au(CN)₂^- ions. Milling of the simple salt KAu(CN)₂ in the presence of equimolar amounts or less of its copper(I)-based analogue coordination polymer KCu(CN)₂ leads to the formation of a series of solid solution materials, isostructural to m-KAu(CN)₂ and with visible fluorescence emission distinct from KCu(CN)₂ or any herein investigated forms of KAu(CN)₂.

New Ferrocene-Based Metalloligand with Two Triazole Carboxamide Pendant Arms and Its Iron(II) Complex: Synthesis, Crystal Structure, 57Fe Mössbauer Spectroscopy, Magnetic Properties and Theoretical Calculations

The new ferrocene-based metalloligand bis (N-4-[3,5-di-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazoyl])ferrocene carboxamide (L) was prepared through derivatization of 1,1′-ferrocenedicarboxylic acid with 4-amino-3,5-di(pyridyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole. The composition and purity of L in the solid state was determined with elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, and its crystal structure with single-crystal X-ray analysis, which revealed that the substituted cyclopentadienyl rings adopt the antiperiplanar conformation and the crystal structure of L is stabilized by O–H···N and N–H···O hydrogen bonds. The molecular properties of L in solution were investigated with NMR and UV-VIS spectroscopies, and cyclic voltammetry disclosed irreversible redox behavior providing one oxidation peak at E1/2 = 1.133 V vs. SHE. Furthermore, the polymeric FeII complex {Fe(L)(C(CN)3)2}n (1) was prepared and characterized with elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. The last two methods confirmed that a mixture of low- and high-spin species is present in 1; however, the spin crossover properties were absent. The presented study was also supported by theoretical calculations at the DFT/TD-DFT level of theory using TPSS and TPSSh functionals.

Negative electrostatic potentials in a Hofmann-type metal-organic framework for efficient acetylene separation

Efficient adsorptive separation of acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2) or ethylene (C2H4) is industrially important but challenging due to the identical dynamic diameter or the trace amount. Here we show an electrostatic potential compatible strategy in a nitroprusside-based Hofmann-type metal-organic framework, Cu(bpy)NP (NP = nitroprusside, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine), for efficient C2H2 separation. The intruding cyanide and nitrosyl groups in undulating one-dimensional channels induce negative electrostatic potentials for preferential C2H2 recognition instead of open metal sites in traditional Hofmann-type MOFs. As a result, Cu(bpy)NP exhibits a 50/50 C2H2/CO2 selectivity of 47.2, outperforming most rigid MOFs. The dynamic breakthrough experiment demonstrates a 99.9% purity C2H4 productivity of 20.57 mmol g-1 from C2H2/C2H4 (1/99, v/v) gas-mixture. Meanwhile, C2H2 can also be captured and recognized from ternary C2H2/CO2/C2H4 (25/25/50, v/v/v) gas-mixture. Furthermore, computational studies and in-situ infrared spectroscopy reveal that the selective C2H2 binding arises from the compatible pore electro-environment generated by the electron-rich N and O atoms from nitroprusside anions.

Robust and Radiation-Resistant Hofmann-Type Metal-Organic Frameworks for Record Xenon/Krypton Separation

The discovery of high-performance adsorbents for highly efficient separation of xenon from krypton is an important but challenging task in the chemical industry due to their similar size and inert spherical nature. Herein, we report two robust and radiation-resistant Hofmann-type MOFs, Co(pyz)[Ni(CN)₄] and Co(pyz)[Pd(CN)₄] (termed as ZJU-74a-Ni and ZJU-74a-Pd), featuring oppositely adjacent open metal sites and perfect pore sizes (4.1 and 3.8 Å) comparable to the kinetic diameter of xenon (4.047 Å), affording the benchmark binding affinity for polarizable Xe gas. These materials thus exhibit both record-high Xe uptake capacities (89.3 and 98.4 cm³ cm^-3 at 296 K and 0.2 bar) and Xe/Kr selectivities (74.1 and 103.4) at ambient conditions, all of which are the highest among all the state-of-the-art materials reported so far. The locations of Xe molecules within ZJU-74a-Ni have been visualized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, in which two oppositely adjacent metal centers combined with the right aperture size can construct a unique sandwich-like binding site to offer unprecedented and ultrastrong Ni²⁺-Xe-Ni²⁺ interactions with xenon, thus leading to the record Xe capture capacity and selectivity. The excellent separation capacity of ZJU-74a-Pd was verified by breakthrough experiments for Xe/Kr gas mixtures, providing both unprecedentedly high xenon uptake capacity (4.63 mmol cm^-3) and krypton productivity (214 cm³ g^-1).

The zero area TE of cyanide-bridged honeycomb layers occurs by complementary structural changes in the cation and anion counterparts.
