The Role of Photo in Oxygen Evolution Reaction: A Review

Photo enhanced oxygen evolution reaction has recently emerged as an advanced strategy with great application prospects for highly efficient energy conversion and storage. In the course of photo enhanced oxygen evolution reactions, the other works focus has predominantly centered on catalysts while inadvertently overlooking the pivotal role of photo. Consequently, this manuscript embarks upon a comprehensive review of recent advancements in photo-driven, aiming to illuminate this critical dimension. A detailed introduction to the photothermal effect, photoelectronic effect, photon-induced surface plasmon resonance, photo and heterojunction, photo-induced reversible geometric conversion, photo-induced energy barrier reduction, photo-induced chemical effect, photo-charging, and the synthesis of laser/photo-assisted catalysts, offering prospects for the development of each case is provided. A detailed introduction to the photothermal effect, photoelectronic effect, photon-induced surface plasmon resonance, photo and heterojunction, photo-induced reversible geometric conversion, photo-induced energy barrier reduction, photo-induced chemical effect, photo-charging, and the synthesis of laser/photo-assisted catalysts is provided. At the same time, the overpotential and Tafel slope of some catalysts mentioned above at 10 mA cm-2 is collected, and calculated the lifting efficiency of light on them, offering prospects for the development of each case.

Manipulation of Oxidation States on Phase Boundary via Surface Layer Modification for Enhanced Alkaline Hydrogen Electrocatalysis

In alkaline water electrolysis and anion exchange membrane water electrolysis technologies, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the cathode is significantly constrained by a high energy barrier during the water dissociation step. This study employs a phase engineering strategy to construct heterostructures composed of crystalline Ni4W and amorphous WOx aiming to enhance catalytic performance in the HER under alkaline conditions. This work systematically modulates the oxidation states of W within the amorphous WOx of the heterostructure to adjust the electronic states of the phase boundary, the energy barriers associated with the water dissociation step, and the adsorption/desorption properties of intermediates during the alkaline HER process. The optimized catalyst, Ni4W/WOx-2, with a quasi-metallic state of W coordinated by a low oxygen content in amorphous WOx, demonstrates exceptional catalytic performance (22 mV@10 mA cm-2), outperforming commercial Pt/C (30 mV@10 mA cm-2). Furthermore, the operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis and theoretical calculations reveal that the optimized W atoms in amorphous WOx serve as active sites for water dissociation and the nearby Ni atoms in crystalline Ni4W facilitated the release of H2. These findings provide valuable insights into designing efficient heterostructured materials for energy conversion.

Construction of Heterojunction-Rich Metal Nitrides Porous Nanosheets Electrocatalyst for Alkaline Water/Seawater Splitting at Large Current Density

The exploiting electrocatalysts for water/seawater electrolysis with remarkable activity and outstanding durability at industrial grade current density remains a huge challenge. Herein, CoMoNx and Fe-doped CoMoNx nanosheet arrays are in-situ grown on Ni foam, which possess plentiful holes, multilevel heterostructure, and lavish Co5.47N/MoN@NF and Fe-Co5.47N/MoN@NF interfaces. They require low overpotentials of 213 and 296 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline media to achieve current density of 800 mA cm-2, respectively, and both possess low Tafel slopes (51.1 and 49.1 mV dec-1) and undiminished stability over 80 h. Moreover, the coupled Co5.47N/MoN@NF and Fe-Co5.47N/MoN@NF electrolyzer requires low voltages of 1.735 V to yield 500 mA cm-2 in alkaline water. Notably, they also exhibit exceptional electrocatalytic properties in alkaline seawater (1.833 V@500 mA cm-2). The experimental studies and theoretical calculations verify that Fe doping does reduce the energy barrier from OH* to O* intermediates during OER process after catalyst reconstruction, and the non-metallic N site from MoN exhibits the lowest theoretical overpotential. The splendid catalytic performance is attributed to the optimized local electron configuration and porous structure. This discovery provides a new design method toward low-cost and excellent catalysts for water/seawater splitting to produce hydrogen.

Pulsed laser induced plasma and thermal effects on molybdenum carbide for dry reforming of methane

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a highly endothermic process, with its development hindered by the harsh thermocatalytic conditions required. We propose an innovative DRM approach utilizing a 16 W pulsed laser in combination with a cost-effective Mo2C catalyst, enabling DRM under milder conditions. The pulsed laser serves a dual function by inducing localized high temperatures and generating *CH plasma on the Mo2C surface. This activates CH4 and CO2, significantly accelerating the DRM reaction. Notably, the laser directly generates *CH plasma from CH4 through thermionic emission and cascade ionization, bypassing the traditional step-by-step dehydrogenation process and eliminating the rate-limiting step of methane cracking. This method maintains a carbon-oxygen balanced environment, thus preventing the deactivation of the Mo2C catalyst due to CO2 oxidation. The laser-catalytic DRM achieves high yields of H2 (14300.8 mmol h-1 g-1) and CO (14949.9 mmol h-1 g-1) with satisfactory energy efficiency (0.98 mmol kJ-1), providing a promising alternative for high-energy-consuming catalytic systems.

Construction of Core-Shelled Covalent/Metal-Organic Frameworks for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the half-reaction in zinc-air batteries and water splitting. Developing highly efficient catalysts toward OER is a challenge due to the difficulty of removing four electrons from two water molecules. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) provide the new chance to construct the highly active catalysts for OER, because they have controlled skeletons, porosities, and well-defined catalytic sites. In this work, core-shell hybrids of COF and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have first demonstrated to catalyze the OER. The synergetic effects between the COF-shell and MOF-core render the catalyst with higher activity than those from the COF and MOF. And the catalyst achieved an overpotential of 328 mV, with a Tafel slope of 43.23 mV dec-1 in 1 m KOH. The theoretical calculation revealed that the high activity is from the Fe sites in the catalyst, which has suitable binding ability of reactant intermediate (OOH*), and thus contributed high activity. This work gives a new insight to designing COFs in electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems.

Laser-Induced Preparation of Anderson-Type Polyoxometalate-Derived Sulfide/Oxide Electrocatalysts for Electrochemical Water Oxidation

Developing cost-effective and high-active electrocatalysts is vital to enhance the electrocatalytic performance for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, traditional pyrolysis methods require complicated procedures, exact temperatures, and long reaction times, leading to high costs and low yields of electrocatalysts in potential industrial applications. Herein, a rapid and economic laser-induced preparation strategy is proposed to synthesize three bimetallic sulfide/oxide composites (MMoOS, M=Fe, Co, and Ni) on a nickel foam (NF) substrate. A focused CO2 laser with high energy is applied to decompose Anderson-type polyoxometalate (POM)-based precursors, enabling the creation of abundant heteropore and defective structures in the MMoOS composites that have multi-components of MS/Mo4O11/MoS2. Remarkably, owing to the structural interactions between the active species, FeMoOS shows superior electrocatalytic performance for OER in an alkaline medium, exhibiting a low overpotential of 240 mV at 50 mA cm-2, a small Tafel slope of 79 mV dec-1, and good durability for 80 h. Physical characterizations after OER imply that partially dissolved Mo-based species and new-formed NiO/NiOOH can effectively uncover abundant active sites, fasten charge transfer, and modify defective structures. This work provides a rapid laser-induced irradiation method for the synthesis of POM-derived nanocomposites as promoted electrocatalysts.

Carbon nanotubes encapsulating Pt/MoN heterostructures for superior hydrogen evolution

Achieving efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts to scale up electrochemical water splitting is desirable but remains a major challenge. Here, nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) loaded with PtNi/MoN electrocatalyst (PtNi/MoN@C) is synthesized by a simple strategy to obtain stronger interphase effects and significantly improve HER activity. The surface morphology of the materials is altered by Pt doping and the electronic structure of MoN is changed, which optimizing the electronic environment of the materials, shifting the binding energy and giving the materials a higher electrical conductivity, this ultimately leads to faster proton and electron transfer processes. The synergistic effect of Pt nanoparticles, MoN and the good combination with carbon leads to a high HER activity of 18 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline solution, outperforming that of the commercial Pt/C. Theoretical studies show that the heterostructures can efficiently enhance the electron transport and reduce the △GH*.

Fe2O3/Ni Nanocomposite Electrocatalyst on Cellulose for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction and Oxygen Evolution Reaction

A key challenge in the development of sustainable water-splitting (WS) systems is the formulation of electrodes by efficient combinations of electrocatalyst and binder materials. Cellulose, a biopolymer, can be considered an excellent dispersing agent and binder that can replace high-cost synthetic polymers to construct low-cost electrodes. Herein, a novel electrocatalyst was fabricated by combining Fe2O3 and Ni on microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) without the use of any additional binder. Structural characterization techniques confirmed the formation of the Fe2O3-Ni nanocomposite. Microstructural studies confirmed the homogeneity of the ~50 nm-sized Fe2O3-Ni on MCC. The WS performance, which involves the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), was evaluated using a 1 M KOH electrolyte solution. The Fe2O3-Ni nanocomposite on MCC displayed an efficient performance toward lowering the overpotential in both the HER (163 mV @ 10 mA cm-2) and OER (360 mV @ 10 mA cm-2). These results demonstrate that MCC facilitated the cohesive binding of electrocatalyst materials and attachment to the substrate surface. In the future, modified cellulose-based structures (such as functionalized gels and those dissolved in various media) can be used as efficient binder materials and alternative options for preparing electrodes for WS applications.

Pulsed-Laser-Triggered Piezoelectric Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction over Tetragonal BaTiO3 Nanocubes

The recombination of photoinduced carriers in photocatalysts is considered one of the biggest barriers to the increase of photocatalytic efficiency. Piezoelectric photocatalysts open a new route to realize rapid carrier separation by mechanically distorting the lattice of piezoelectric nanocrystals to form a piezoelectric potential within the nanocrystals, generally requiring external force (e.g., ultrasonic radiation, mechanical stirring, and ball milling). In this study, a low-power UV pulsed laser (PL) (3 W, 355 nm) as a UV light source can trigger piezoelectric photocatalytic CO2 reduction of tetragonal BaTiO3 (BTO-T) in the absence of an applied force. The tremendous transient light pressure (5.7 × 107  Pa, 2.7 W) of 355 nm PL not only bends the energy band of BTO-T, thus allowing reactions that cannot theoretically occur to take place, but also induces a pulsed built-in electric field to determine an efficient photoinduced carrier separation. On that basis, the PL-triggered piezoelectric photocatalytic CO2 reduction realizes the highest reported performance, reaching a millimole level CO yield of 52.9 mmol g-1 h-1 and achieving efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction in the continuous catalytic system. The method in this study is promising to contribute to the design of efficient piezoelectric photocatalytic reactions.

Hybrid Heterostructure Ni3 N|NiFeP/FF Self-Supporting Electrode for High-Current-Density Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Exploring earth-abundant and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an urgent need and significant to water electrolysis. Although great achievements have been made, it is still challenging to achieve industrial current density and stability. Herein, a hybrid heterostructure electrode based on Ni₃ N and NiFeP over Fe foam substrate (Ni₃ N|NiFeP/FF) is reported, along with 3D-interconnected hierarchical porous architecture, achieving the low overpotentials of 287, 178, and 290 mV at 500 mA cm^-2 in 1 m KOH, 30 wt% KOH, and alkaline simulated seawater, respectively, with excellent durability at 800 mA cm^-2 over 120 h, which can satisfy the requirements of industrial water electrolysis. Here, the hybrid heterostructure can ensure the low energy barrier of the catalytic active sites, the 3D-interconnected hierarchical porous architecture can facilitate the fast mass/ions/electrons transformation, which contributes together to boost the superb water splitting performance. Furthermore, the COMSOL simulations confirm the multiple merits of the designed electrode during the water electrocatalysis. The present work provides a new strategy in the design and engineering of high-performance electrodes for industrial water electrolysis.

Hydroxyapatite-Derived Heterogeneous Ru-Ru2 P Electrocatalyst and Environmentally-Friendly Membrane Electrode toward Efficient Alkaline Electrolyzer

Alkaline membrane water electrolysis is a promising production technology, and advanced electrocatalyst and membrane electrode design have always been the core technology. Herein, an ion-exchange method and an environmentally friendly in situ green phosphating strategy are successively employed to fabricate Ru-Ru₂ P heterogeneous nanoparticles by using hydroxyapatite (HAP) as a phosphorus source, which is an exceptionally active electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Density functional theory calculation results reveal that strong electronic redistribution occurs at the heterointerface of Ru-Ru₂ P, which modulates the electronic structure to achieve an optimized hydrogen adsorption strength. The obtained Ru-Ru₂ P possesses excellent HER performance (24 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 ) and robust stability (1000 mA cm^-2 for 120 h) in alkaline media. Furthermore, an environmentally friendly membrane electrode with a sandwich structure is assembled by HAP nanowires as an alkaline membrane, Ru-Ru₂ P as a cathodic catalyst, and NiFe-LDH as an anodic catalyst, respectively. The voltage of (-) Ru-Ru₂ P || NiFe-LDH/CNTs (+) (1.53 V at 10 mA cm^-2 ) is lower than that of (-) 20 wt% Pt/C || RuO₂ (+) (1.60 V at 10 mA cm^-2 ) for overall water splitting. Overall, the studies not only design an efficient catalyst but also provide a new route to achieve a high-stability electrolyzer for industrial H₂ production.

Oriented intergrowth of the catalyst layer in membrane electrode assembly for alkaline water electrolysis

The application of membrane electrode assemblies is considered a promising approach for increasing the energy efficiency of conventional alkaline water electrolysis. However, previous investigations have mostly focused on improving membrane conductivity and electrocatalyst activity. This study reports an all-in-one membrane electrode assembly obtained by de novo design. The introduction of a porous membrane readily enables the oriented intergrowth of ordered catalyst layers using solvothermal methods, leading to the formation of an all-in-one MEA for alkaline water electrolysis. This all-in-one MEA features ordered catalyst layers with large surface areas, a low-tortuosity pore structure, integrated catalyst layer/membrane interfaces, and a well-ordered OH^- transfer channel. Owing to this design, a high current density of 1000 mA cm^-2 is obtained at 1.57 V in 30 wt% KOH, resulting in a 94% energy efficiency. This work highlights the prospects of all-in-one membrane electrode assemblies in designing next-generation high-performance alkaline water electrolysis.

MoO2 nanosheets anchored with Co nanoparticles as a bifunctional electrocatalytic platform for overall water splitting

Electrochemical water splitting is one of the potential commercial techniques to produce clean hydrogen energy because of the high efficiency and environmental friendliness. However, development of low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts that can replace Pt-based catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is challenging. Herein, Co nanoparticles (NPs) are anchored on MoO₂ nanosheets (Co/MoO₂) by thermal reduction of the CoMoO₄ nanosheet array in Ar/H₂. The uniformly distributed Co NPs improve the electron transfer capability and modulate the surface states of the MoO₂ nanosheets to enhance hydrogen desorption and HER kinetics. Moreover, the Co/MoO₂ composite is beneficial to the interfacial structure and the MoO₂ nanosheets prevent aggregation of Co NPs to improve the intrinsic OER characteristics in the alkaline electrolyte. As a result, the Co/MoO₂ electrocatalyst shows low HER and OER overpotentials of 178 and 318 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in 1 M KOH. The electrolytic cell consisting of the bifunctional Co/MoO₂ electrodes shows a small voltage of 1.72 V for a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in overall water splitting.

Bimetal Modulation Stabilizing a Metallic Heterostructure for Efficient Overall Water Splitting at Large Current Density

Large current-driven alkaline water splitting for large-scale hydrogen production generally suffers from the sluggish charge transfer kinetics. Commercial noble-metal catalysts are unstable in large-current operation, while most non-noble metal catalysts can only achieve high activity at low current densities <200 mA cm^-2 , far lower than industrially-required current densities (>500 mA cm^-2 ). Herein, a sulfide-based metallic heterostructure is designed to meet the industrial demand by regulating the electronic structure of phase transition coupling with interfacial defects from Mo and Ni incorporation. The modulation of metallic Mo₂ S₃ and in situ epitaxial growth of bifunctional Ni-based catalyst to construct metallic heterostructure can facilitate the charge transfer for fast Volmer H and Heyrovsky H₂ generation. The Mo₂ S₃ @NiMo₃ S₄ electrolyzer requires an ultralow voltage of 1.672 V at a large current density of 1000 mA cm^-2 , with ≈100% retention over 100 h, outperforming the commercial RuO₂ ||Pt/C, owing to the synergistic effect of the phase and interface electronic modulation. This work sheds light on the design of metallic heterostructure with an optimized interfacial electronic structure and abundant active sites for industrial water splitting.

Recent advances in hollow nanomaterials with multiple dimensions for electrocatalytic water splitting

Electrocatalytic water splitting has great research prospects in the production of green hydrogen energy, and electrocatalysts are the prerequisite. As widely employed efficient electrocatalysts, hollow nanostructures have attracted a lot of research attention due to their excellent catalytic activity and structural stability. Moreover, the abundant catalytically active sites and tunable morphology also make hollow nanomaterials promising electrocatalysts for water splitting. Despite these advantages, the industrial applications of these hollow nanocatalysts are impeded by limitations like the lack of effective synthesis methods and unclear formation mechanisms. Therefore, extensive efforts have been devoted to the development of efficient synthesis strategies to boost the development of more efficient hollow electrocatalysts, and great progress has been achieved in recent years. To gain a better understanding of the rapid development of hollow nanocatalysts for water splitting, we herein organize a review to summarize the recent synthetic methods and advantages of hollow materials with different dimensions. The specific advantages of hollow nanomaterials in electrocatalytic water splitting, such as abundant active sites, a stable structure, high mass transfer efficiency, and reduced aggregation of catalytic particles, are also summarized. Finally, the challenges and prospects of hollow nanostructures with multiple dimensions in electrocatalytic water splitting are further explored.

Construction of MnxCoyO4/Ti electrocatalysts for efficient bifunctional water splitting

In this work, we report the design and synthesis of non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts for effective overall water splitting in alkaline solutions for the development of hydrogen energy. The electrocatalysts were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method similar to microflower structure electrocatalysts. The synergistic effect between the special Echinops sphaerocephalus nanostructure and the nanowire can greatly improve the conductivity of the nanomaterial due to its high activity quality, fast ion transport, and exposure of more active sites, thus resulting in a better catalytic activity and a longer material stability of the electrocatalyst. For Mn_xCo_yO₄/Ti in alkaline aqueous solutions, a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 is required when the voltage is only 1.60 V. In addition, the hydrogen evolution activity of electrocatalysts is 168 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, the Tafel slope is 174 mV dec^-1, and the oxygen evolution activity of electrocatalysts is 229 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, which showed good long-term stability within 12 h, even better than that of previously reported electrocatalysts.

Superhydrophilic/Superaerophobic Hierarchical NiP2@MoO2/Co(Ni)MoO4 Core-Shell Array Electrocatalysts for Efficient Hydrogen Production at Large Current Densities

Rationally constructing low-cost, high-efficiency, and durable electrocatalysts toward the hydrogen evolution reaction at large current densities is imperative for water splitting, especially for large-scale industrial applications. Herein, a hierarchical core-shell NiP₂@MoO₂/Co(Ni)MoO₄ cuboid array electrode with superhydrophilic/superaerophobic properties is successfully fabricated and the formation mechanism of the core-shell structure is systematically investigated. Through an in situ partially converted gas-solid reaction during the phosphating process, Ni and Co elements are leached and rearranged to form NiP₂ particles and amorphous CoO as the shell layer and the inner undecomposed Co(Ni)MoO₄ crystals serve as the core layer. Because of its seamless core-shell structure and superhydrophilicity/superaerophobicity of hierarchical cuboid arrays, NiP₂@MoO₂/Co(Ni)MoO₄ exhibits superior HER activity in 1 M KOH with only an overpotential of 297 mV to deliver 1000 mA cm^-2 and can work steadily for 650 h at 200 mA cm^-2. Remarkably, when coupled with NiFe LDH for overall water splitting, it can drive an AA battery with an ultralow cell voltage of 1.49 V to deliver 10 mA cm^-2. This work sheds new light on designing large-current-density efficient HER electrocatalysts for large-scale industrial applications.
