Near-Infrared-Activated Thermochromic Perovskite Smart Windows

Chaotropic Ions Mediated Polymer Gelation for Thermal Management

Energy and environmental issues have increasingly garnered significant attention for sustainable development. Flexible and shape-stable phase change materials display great potential in regulation of environmental temperature for energy saving and human comfort. Here, inspired by the water absorption behavior of salt-tolerant animals and plants in salinity environment and the Hofmeister theory, highly stable phase change salogels (PCSGs) are fabricated through in situ polymerization of hydrophilic monomers in molten salt hydrates, which can serve multiple functions including thermal management patches, smart windows, and ice blocking coatings. The gelation principles of the polymer in high ion concentration solution are explored through the density functional theory simulation and verified the feasibility of four types of salt hydrates. The high concentration chaotropic ions strongly interacted with polymer chains and promoted the gelation at low polymer concentrations which derive highly-stable and ultra-moisturizing PCSGs with high latent heat (> 200 J g-1). The synergistic adhesion and transparency switching abilities accompanied with phase transition enable their smart thermal management. The study resolves the melting leakage and thermal cycling stability of salt hydrates, and open an avenue to fabricate flexible PCM of low cost, high latent heat, and long-term durability for energy-saving, ice-blocking, and thermal management.

Adaptive Thermal Management Radiative Cooling Smart Window with Perfect Near-Infrared Shielding

The architectural window with spectrally selective features and radiative cooling is an effective way to save building energy consumption. However, architectural windows that combine both functions are currently based on micro-nano photonic structures, which undoubtedly hinder their commercial application due to the complexity of manufacture. Herein, a novel tunable visible light transmittance radiative cooling smart window (TTRC smart window) with perfect near-infrared (NIR) shielding ability is manufactured via a mass-producible scraping method. TTRC smart window presents high luminous transmittance (Tlum = 56.8%), perfect NIR shielding (TNIR = 3.4%), bidirectional transparency adjustment ability unavailable in other transparent radiative coolers based on photonic structures (ΔTlum = 54.2%), and high emittance in the atmospheric window (over 94%). Outdoor measurements confirm that smart window can reduce 8.2 and 6.6 °C, respectively, compared to ordinary glass and indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. Moreover, TTRC smart window can save over 20% of annual energy in the tropics compared to ITO and ordinary glass. The simple preparation method employed in this work and the superior optical properties of the smart window have significantly broadened the scope of application of architectural windows and advanced the commercialization of architectural windows.

Sunlight-Driven Smart Windows with a Wide Temperature Range of Optical Switching Based on Chiral Nematic Liquid Crystals

Photoresponsive liquid crystals are promising materials for sunlight-driven smart windows, which can automatically change their optical states in response to sunlight and control energy flow between the inside and outside of a building. Herein, liquid-crystalline systems are developed that show a transparent-scattering transition upon irradiation with sunlight in a wide temperature range. Push-pull azobenzenes with axial chirality have been newly developed as photochromic chiral dopants to allow changes in mesostructures of liquid crystals in response to sunlight. To realize optical switching, photochromic and photoinert chiral compounds with opposite handedness of helical twisting are doped in liquid crystals. This liquid crystalline sample with a compensated nematic phase is transparent in its initial state. Upon irradiation with sunlight, this sample transforms to a scattering state due to the formation of helical mesostructures along with photoisomerization of azobenzene moieties and the change in the helical twisting power. After the cease of irradiation, the sample reverts to the transparent state through thermal back isomerization of azobenzene moieties. This system significantly improves the operating temperature range of sunlight-driven smart windows based on liquid crystals: the transparent-scattering transition is observed at 4-42 °C. The present mechanism allows development of autonomous and wireless smart windows adaptable to various environments.

Ferroelectricity and Thermochromism in a 2D Dion-Jacobson Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite

2D organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) have become one of the hottest research topics due to their excellent environmental stability and unique optoelectronic properties. Recently, the ferroelectricity and thermochromism of 2D OIHPs have attracted increasing interests. Integrating ferroelectricity and thermochromism into perovskites can significantly promote the development of multichannel intelligent devices. Here, a novel 2D Dion-Jacobson OIHP of the formula (3AMP)PbI4 (where 3AMP is 3-(aminomethyl)pyridinium) is reported, which has a remarkable spontaneous polarization value (Ps) of 15.6 µC cm-2 and interesting thermochromism. As far it is known, such a large Ps value is the highest for 2D OIHPs recorded so far. These findings will inspire further exploration and application of multifunctional perovskites.

Perovskite Smart Windows: The Light Manipulator in Energy-Efficient Buildings

Uncontrolled sunlight entering through windows contributes to substantial heating and cooling demands in buildings, which leads to high energy consumption from the buildings. Recently, perovskite smart windows have emerged as innovative energy-saving technologies, offering the potential to adaptively control indoor solar heat gain through their impressive sunlight modulation capabilities. Moreover, harnessing the high-efficiency photovoltaic properties of perovskite materials, these windows have the potential to generate power, thereby realizing more advanced windows with combined light modulation and energy harvesting capabilities. This review summarizes the recent advancements in various chromic perovskite materials for achieving light modulation, focusing on both perovskite structures and underlying switching mechanisms. The discussion also encompasses device engineering strategies for smart windows, including the improvement of their optical and transition performance, durability, combination with electricity generation, and the evaluation of their energy-saving performance in building applications. Furthermore, the challenges and opportunities associated with perovskite smart windows are explicated, aimed at stimulating more academic research and advancing their pragmatic implementation for building energy efficiency and sustainability.

On-demand engineerable visible spectrum by fine control of electrochemical reactions

Tunability of optical performance is one of the key technologies for adaptive optoelectronic applications, such as camouflage clothing, displays, and infrared shielding. High-precision spectral tunability is of great importance for some special applications with on-demand adaptability but remains challenging. Here we demonstrate a galvanostatic control strategy to achieve this goal, relying on the finding of the quantitative correlation between optical properties and electrochemical reactions within materials. An electrochromic electro-optical efficiency index is established to optically fingerprint and precisely identify electrochemical redox reactions in the electrochromic device. Consequently, the charge-transfer process during galvanostatic electrochemical reaction can be quantitatively regulated, permitting precise control over the final optical performance and on-demand adaptability of electrochromic devices as evidenced by an ultralow deviation of <3.0%. These findings not only provide opportunities for future adaptive optoelectronic applications with strict demand on precise spectral tunability but also will promote in situ quantitative research in a wide range of spectroelectrochemistry, electrochemical energy storage, electrocatalysis, and material chemistry.

Rapid Thermochromic and Highly Thermally Conductive Nanocomposite Based on Silicone Rubber for Temperature Visualization Thermal Management in Electronic Devices

Effective heat dissipation and real-time temperature monitoring are crucial for ensuring the long-term stable operation of modern, high-performance electronic products. This study proposes a silicon rubber polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based nanocomposite with a rapid thermal response and high thermal conductivity. This nanocomposite enables both rapid heat dissipation and real-time temperature monitoring for high-performance electronic products. The reported material primarily consists of a thermally conductive layer (Al2O3/PDMS composites) and a reversible thermochromic layer (organic thermochromic material, graphene oxide, and PDMS nanocoating; OTM-GO/PDMS). The thermal conductivity of OTM-GO/Al2O3/PDMS nanocomposites reached 4.14 W m-1 K-1, reflecting an increase of 2200% relative to that of pure PDMS. When the operating temperature reached 35, 45, and 65 °C, the surface of OTM-GO/Al2O3/PDMS nanocomposites turned green, yellow, and red, respectively, and the thermal response time was only 30 s. The OTM-GO/Al2O3/PDMS nanocomposites also exhibited outstanding repeatability and maintained excellent color stability over 20 repeated applications.

Scalable Photochromic Film for Solar Heat and Daylight Management

The adaptive control of sunlight through photochromic smart windows could have a huge impact on the energy efficiency and daylight comfort in buildings. However, the fabrication of inorganic nanoparticle and polymer composite photochromic films with a high contrast ratio and high transparency/low haze remains a challenge. Here, a solution method is presented for the in situ growth of copper-doped tungsten trioxide nanoparticles in polymethyl methacrylate, which allows a low-cost preparation of photochromic films with a high luminous transparency (luminous transmittance Tlum = 91%) and scalability (30 × 350 cm2 ). High modulation of visible light (ΔTlum = 73%) and solar heat (modulation of solar transmittance ΔTsol = 73%, modulation of solar heat gain coefficient ΔSHGC = 0.5) of the film improves the indoor daylight comfort and energy efficiency. Simulation results show that low-e windows with the photochromic film applied can greatly enhance the energy efficiency and daylight comfort. This photochromic film presents an attractive strategy for achieving more energy-efficient buildings and carbon neutrality to combat global climate change.

Mask-inspired moisture-transmitting and durable thermochromic perovskite smart windows

Thermochromic perovskite smart windows (TPWs) are a cutting-edge energy-efficient window technology. However, like most perovskite-based devices, humidity-related degradation limits their widespread application. Herein, inspired by the structure of medical masks, a unique triple-layer thermochromic perovskite window (MTPW) that enable sufficient water vapor transmission to trigger the thermochromism but effectively repel detrimental water and moisture to extend its lifespan is developed. The MTPW demonstrates superhydrophobicity and maintains a solar modulation ability above 20% during a 45-day aging test, with a decay rate 37 times lower than that of a pristine TPW. It can also immobilize lead ions and significantly reduce lead leakage by 66 times. Furthermore, a significant haze reduction from 90% to 30% is achieved, overcoming the blurriness problem of TPWs. Benefiting from the improved optical performance, extended lifespan, suppressed lead leakage, and facile fabrication, the MTPW pushes forward the wide applications of smart windows in green buildings.

Perovskite-Coated Thermochromic Transparent Wood: A Novel Material for Smart Windows in Energy-Efficient and Sustainable Buildings

Transparent wood (TW) has emerged as a sustainable alternative to conventional glass as an energy-efficient window glazing material owing to its exceptional optical transparency and superior mechanical and thermal performances. However, it is challenging to develop the TW-based color-switching smart windows with both high optical performance and mechanical strengths. In this work, an optically switchable and mechanically robust perovskite-coated thermochromic transparent wood (PTTW) is developed for use as smart windows to achieve an effective solar modulation and thermal management. PTTW exhibits a substantial solar modulation ability Δτsol of 21.6% and a high clear-state luminous transmittance τlum of 78.0%, which enable an efficient thermal regulation while ensuring high visual clarity. PTTW also offers enhanced mechanical properties (i.e., tensile strength σtens = 71.4 MPa and flexural strength σflex = 93.1 MPa) and improved thermal properties [i.e., thermal conductivity K = 0.247 W/(m·K) and heat capacity C = 1.69 J/(g·°C)] compared to glass-based smart windows, as well as excellent performance stability (i.e., 200 heating-cooling cycles), manifesting its applicability in real building scenarios. In addition, PTTW also demonstrates a remarkable thermal-regulating performance (i.e., 5.44 °C indoor air temperature regulation) and an energy-saving potential (i.e., 12.9% heating, ventilation, and air conditioning energy savings) in Hong Kong. Overall, this study contributes to the progression toward energy-efficient and sustainable buildings.

Photothermal-Driven Polymer for a Smart Window with Adaptive Solar Modulation

Although the thermochromic smart windows with adjustable sunlight transmittance to achieve energy savings are gradually improving, they are still difficult to use, limited by their unreasonable thermal response temperature, slow switching time, and poor durability. Here, we demonstrate a dual-function hybrid thermoresponsive smart window device (CPH) by trapping the phase-change polyHEA-HDA polymer (HEA = hydroxyethyl acrylate, HDA = hexadecyl acrylate) and polydopamine@CsxWO3 (PDA@CWO) core-shell nanoparticles within glasses. The introduced PDA@CWO nanoparticles substantially increase the energy transformation efficiency of solar energy to heat due to their outstanding photothermal conversion. When the temperature increases above the phase-transition temperature of polyHEA-HDA polymer, the copolymer components in the composite material undergo a reversible crystalline-amorphous transition, which enables the transformation of the whole smart window from transparency to opaque in a low ambient temperature. The light transmittance in the solar range can be dynamically modulated between 54.8 and 22.9% with a low ambient temperature while maintaining acceptable visible light transparency and effective UV shielding. A model house testing proves an indoor temperature cooling of 7.1 °C. This study offers a new approach to designing an energy-saving smart window system with multifunctionality.

Optical Memory, Switching, and Neuromorphic Functionality in Metal Halide Perovskite Materials and Devices

Metal halide perovskite based materials have emerged over the past few decades as remarkable solution-processable optoelectronic materials with many intriguing properties and potential applications. These emerging materials have recently been considered for their promise in low-energy memory and information processing applications. In particular, their large optical cross-sections, high photoconductance contrast, large carrier-diffusion lengths, and mixed electronic/ionic transport mechanisms are attractive for enabling memory elements and neuromorphic devices that are written and/or read in the optical domain. Here, recent progress toward memory and neuromorphic functionality in metal halide perovskite materials and devices where photons are used as a critical degree of freedom for switching, memory, and neuromorphic functionality is reviewed.

Nanowire-based smart windows combining electro- and thermochromics for dynamic regulation of solar radiation

Smart window is an attractive option for efficient heat management to minimize energy consumption and improve indoor living comfort owing to their optical properties of adjusting sunlight. To effectively improve the sunlight modulation and heat management capability of smart windows, here, we propose a co-assembly strategy to fabricate the electrochromic and thermochromic smart windows with tunable components and ordered structures for the dynamic regulation of solar radiation. Firstly, to enhance both illumination and cooling efficiency in electrochromic windows, the aspect ratio and mixed type of Au nanorods are tuned to selectively absorb the near-infrared wavelength range of 760 to 1360 nm. Furthermore, when assembled with electrochromic W₁₈O₄₉ nanowires in the colored state, the Au nanorods exhibit a synergistic effect, resulting in a 90% reduction of near-infrared light and a corresponding 5 °C cooling effect under 1-sun irradiation. Secondly, to extend the fixed response temperature value to a wider range of 30-50 °C in thermochromic windows, the doping amount and mixed type of W-VO₂ nanowires are carefully regulated. Last but not the least, the ordered assembly structure of the nanowires can greatly reduce the level of haze and enhance visibility in the windows.

Thermochromic Ni(II) Organometallics With High Optical Transparency and Low Phase-Transition Temperature for Energy-Saving Smart Windows

Thermochromic smart windows with rational modulation in indoor temperature and brightness draw considerable interest in reducing building energy consumption, which remains a huge challenge to meet the comfortable responsive temperature and the wide transmittance modulation range from visible to near-infrared (NIR) light for their practical application. Herein, a novel thermochromic Ni(II) organometallic of [(C₂ H₅ )₂ NH₂ ]₂ NiCl₄ for smart windows is rationally designed and synthesized via an inexpensive mechanochemistry method, which processes a low phase-transition temperature of 46.3 °C for the reversible color evolution from transparent to blue with a tunable visible transmittance from 90.5% to 72.1%. Furthermore, cesium tungsten bronze (CWO) and antimony tin oxide (ATO) with excellent NIR absorption in 750-1500 and 1500-2600 nm are introduced in the [(C₂ H₅ )₂ NH₂ ]₂ NiCl₄ -based smart windows, realizing a broadband sunlight modulation of a 27% visible light modulation and more than 90% of NIR shielding ability. Impressively, these smart windows demonstrate stable and reversible thermochromic cycles at room temperature. Compared with the conventional windows in the field tests, these smart windows can significantly reduce the indoor temperature by 16.1 °C, which is promising for next-generation energy-saving buildings.

Thermochromic Energy Efficient Windows: Fundamentals, Recent Advances, and Perspectives

Thermochromic energy efficient windows represent an important protocol technology for advanced architectural windows with energy-saving capabilities through the intelligent regulation of indoor solar irradiation and the modulation of window optical properties in response to real-time temperature stimuli. In this review, recent progress in some promising thermochromic systems is summarized from the aspects of structures, the micro-/mesoscale regulation of thermochromic properties, and integration with other emerging energy techniques. Furthermore, the challenges and opportunities in thermochromic energy-efficient windows are outlined to promote future scientific investigations and practical applications in building energy conservation.

Thermo-Responsive Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/Hydroxypropylmethyl Cellulose Hydrogel with High Luminous Transmittance and Solar Modulation for Smart Windows

Thermochromic smart windows are considered to be promising energy-saving devices for reducing energy consumption in buildings. The ideal materials for thermochromic smart windows should have high transmittance, high solar modulation, low phase-transition temperature, and excellent high-temperature thermal stability, which are difficult to achieve simultaneously. This work reports a simple one-step low-temperature polymerization method to prepare a thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (PNIPAM/HPMC) hydrogel achieving the above performances simultaneously. The low-temperature polymerization environment endowed the hydrogel with a high luminous transmittance (T_lum) of 90.82%. HPMC as a functional material effectively enhanced the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the hydrogel. Meanwhile, the PNIPAM/HPMC hydrogel showed a low phase-transition temperature (∼32 °C) and high solar modulation (ΔT_sol = 81.52%), which proved that it is an ideal material for thermochromic smart windows. Moreover, a PNIPAM/HPMC smart window exhibited high light transmittance (T_380-760 = 86.27%), excellent light modulation (ΔT₃₆₅ = 74.27%, ΔT_380-760 = 86.17%, and ΔT₉₄₀ = 63.93%), good indoor temperature regulation ability and stability, which indicated that it was an attractive candidate for application in reducing energy consumption in buildings. This work also provides an option and direction for modifying PNIPAM-based thermochromic smart windows.

Concomitant Thermochromic and Phase-Change Effect in a Switchable Spin Crossover Material for Efficient Passive Control of Day and Night Temperature Fluctuations

The increasing environmental protection demand has prompted the development of passive thermal regulation systems that reduce temperature fluctuations in buildings. Here, it is demonstrated that the heat generated by the sun can trigger a spin crossover (SCO) in a molecule-base material, resulting in a concomitant color variation (from pink to white) and a phase transition. This leads to a cooling effect with respect to other thermochromic materials. In addition, when the material is cooled, a dampening of the temperature decrease is produced. Therefore, these materials can potentially be implemented for passive temperature control in buildings. Furthermore, SCO materials are remarkably stable upon cycling and highly versatile, which allows for the design of compounds with properties tailored for the desired climatic conditions and comfortable temperature.

Mixed-halide copper-based perovskite R2Cu(Cl/Br)4 with different organic cations for reversible thermochromism

Mechanically exfoliated flakes of mixed-halide Cu-based perovskite crystals, R2Cu(Cl/Br)4, with three alkyl chains exhibit reversible thermochromic behavior with differences in crystal lattice behavior depending on the organic spacer used.
