Ingenious Structure Engineering to Enhance Piezoelectricity in Poly(vinylidene fluoride) for Biomedical Applications

The future development of wearable/implantable sensing and medical devices relies on substrates with excellent flexibility, stability, biocompatibility, and self-powered capabilities. Enhancing the energy efficiency and convenience is crucial, and converting external mechanical energy into electrical energy is a promising strategy for long-term advancement. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), known for its piezoelectricity, is an outstanding representative of an electroactive polymer. Ingeniously designed PVDF-based polymers have been fabricated as piezoelectric devices for various applications. Notably, the piezoelectric performance of PVDF-based platforms is determined by their structural characteristics at different scales. This Review highlights how researchers can strategically engineer structures on microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic scales. We discuss advanced research on PVDF-based piezoelectric platforms with diverse structural designs in biomedical sensing, disease diagnosis, and treatment. Ultimately, we try to give perspectives for future development trends of PVDF-based piezoelectric platforms in biomedicine, providing valuable insights for further research.

High-Performance Piezoelectric Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks

Organic piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) are attractive in harvesting mechanical energy for various self-powering systems. However, their practical applications are severely restricted by their low output open circuit voltage. To address this issue, herein, we prepared two two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs, CityU-13 and CityU-14), functionalized with fluorinated alkyl chains for PENGs. The piezoelectricity of both COFs was evidenced by switchable polarization, characteristic butterfly amplitude loops, phase hysteresis loops, conspicuous surface potentials and high piezoelectric coefficient value (d33). The PENGs fabricated with COFs displayed highest output open circuit voltages (60 V for CityU-13 and 50 V for CityU-14) and delivered satisfactory short circuit current with an excellent stability of over 600 seconds. The superior open circuit voltages of CityU-13 and CityU-14 rank in top 1 and 2 among all reported organic materials-based PENGs.

Low-Temperature Nanosecond Laser Process of HZO-IGZO FeFETs toward Monolithic 3D System on Chip Integration

Ferroelectric field-effect transistors (FeFETs) are increasingly important for in-memory computing and monolithic 3D (M3D) integration in system-on-chip (SoC) applications. However, the high-temperature processing required by most ferroelectric memories can lead to thermal damage to the underlying device layers, which poses significant physical limitations for 3D integration processes. To solve this problem, the study proposes using a nanosecond pulsed laser for selective annealing of hafnia-based FeFETs, enabling precise control of heat penetration depth within thin films. Sufficient thermal energy is delivered to the IGZO oxide channel and HZO ferroelectric gate oxide without causing thermal damage to the bottom layer, which has a low transition temperature (<250 °C). Using optimized laser conditions, a fast response time (<1 µs) and excellent stability (cycle > 106, retention > 106 s) are achieved in the ferroelectric HZO film. The resulting FeFET exhibited a wide memory window (>1.7 V) with a high on/off ratio (>105). In addition, moderate ferroelectric properties (2·Pr of 14.7 µC cm-2) and pattern recognition rate-based linearity (potentiation: 1.13, depression: 1.6) are obtained. These results demonstrate compatibility in HZO FeFETs by specific laser annealing control and thin-film layer design for various structures (3D integrated, flexible) with neuromorphic applications.

Emerging Wearable Ultrasound Technology

This perspective article provides a brief overview on materials, fabrications, beamforming, and applications for wearable ultrasound devices, a rapidly growing field with versatile implications. Recent developments in miniaturization and soft electronics have significantly advanced wearable ultrasound devices. Such devices offer distinctive advantages over traditional ultrasound probes, including prolonged usability and operator independence, and have demonstrated their effectiveness in continuous monitoring, noninvasive therapies, and advanced human-machine interfaces. Wearable ultrasound devices can be classified into three main categories: rigid, flexible, and stretchable, each having distinctive properties and fabrication strategies. Key unique strategies in device design, packaging, and beamforming for each type of wearable ultrasound devices are reviewed. Furthermore, we highlight the latest applications enabled by wearable ultrasound technology in various areas. This article concludes by discussing the outstanding challenges within the field and outlines potential pathways for future advancements.

Maximizing Triboelectric Nanogenerators by Physics-Informed AI Inverse Design

Triboelectric nanogenerators offer an environmentally friendly approach to harvesting energy from mechanical excitations. This capability has made them widely sought-after as an efficient, renewable, and sustainable energy source, with the potential to decrease reliance on traditional fossil fuels. However, developing triboelectric nanogenerators with specific output remains a challenge mainly due to the uncertainties associated with their complex designs for real-life applications. Artificial intelligence-enabled inverse design is a powerful tool to realize performance-oriented triboelectric nanogenerators. This is an emerging scientific direction that can address the concerns about the design and optimization of triboelectric nanogenerators leading to a next generation nanogenerator systems. This perspective paper aims at reviewing the principal analysis of triboelectricity, summarizing the current challenges of designing and optimizing triboelectric nanogenerators, and highlighting the physics-informed inverse design strategies to develop triboelectric nanogenerators. Strategic inverse design is particularly discussed in the contexts of expanding the four-mode analytical models by physics-informed artificial intelligence, discovering new conductive and dielectric materials, and optimizing contact interfaces. Various potential development levels of artificial intelligence-enhanced triboelectric nanogenerators are delineated. Finally, the potential of physics-informed artificial intelligence inverse design to propel triboelectric nanogenerators from prototypes to multifunctional intelligent systems for real-life applications is discussed.

Giant Piezoelectric Output and Stability Enhancement in Piezopolymer Composites with Liquid Metal Nanofillers

Integrating nanomaterials into the polymer matrix is an effective strategy to optimize the performance of polymer-based piezoelectric devices. Nevertheless, the trade-off between the output enhancement and stability maintenance of piezoelectric composites usually leads to an unsatisfied overall performance for the high-strength operation of devices. Here, by setting liquid metal (LM) nanodroplets as the nanofillers in a poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) matrix, the as-formed liquid-solid/conductive-dielectric interfaces significantly promote the piezoelectric output and the reliability of this piezoelectric composite. A giant performance improvement featured is obtained with, nearly 1000% boosting on the output voltage (as high as 212 V), 270% increment on the piezoelectric coefficient (d33 ∼51.1 pC N-1 ) and long-term reliability on both structure and output (over 36 000 cycles). The design of a novel heterogenous interface with both mechanical matching and electric coupling can be the new orientation for developing high performance piezoelectric composite-based devices.

High-Fidelity sEMG Signals Recorded by an on-Skin Electrode Based on AgNWs for Hand Gesture Classification Using Machine Learning

The human forearm is one of the most densely distributed parts of the human body, with the most irregular spatial distribution of muscles. A number of specific forearm muscles control hand motions. Acquiring high-fidelity sEMG signals from human forearm muscles is vital for human-machine interface (HMI) applications based on gesture recognition. Currently, the most commonly used commercial electrodes for detecting sEMG or other electrophysiological signals have a rigid nature without stretchability and cannot maintain conformal contact with the human skin during deformation, and the adhesive hydrogel used in them to reduce skin-electrode impedance may shrink and cause skin inflammation after long-term use. Therefore, developing elastic electrodes with stretchability and biocompatibility for sEMG signal recording is essential for developing HMI. Here, we fabricated a nanocomposite hybrid on-skin electrode by infiltrating silver nanowires (AgNWs), a one-dimensional (1D) nano metal material with conductivity, into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a silicone elastomer with a similar Young's modulus to that of the human skin. The AgNW on-skin electrode has a thickness of 300 μm and low sheet resistance of 0.481 ± 0.014 Ω/sq and can withstand the mechanical strain of up to 54% and maintain a sheet resistance lower than 1 Ω/sq after 1000 dynamic strain cycles. The AgNW on-skin electrode can record high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) sEMG signals from forearm muscles and can reflect various force levels of muscles by sEMG signals. Besides, four typical hand gestures were recognized by the multichannel AgNW on-skin electrodes with a recognition accuracy of 92.3% using machine learning method. The AgNW on-skin electrode proposed in this study has great potential and promise in various HMI applications that employ sEMG signals as control signals.
