Pyridine-Regulated Lamellar Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Framework (Ni-MOF) for Nonenzymatic Electrochemical Glucose Sensor

Tailoring the Electrochemical Responses of MOF-74 Via Dual-Defect Engineering for Superior Energy Storage

Rationally designed defects in a crystal can confer unique properties. This study showcases a novel dual-defects engineering strategy to tailor the electrochemical response of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials used for electrochemical energy storage. Salicylic acid (SA) is identified as an effective modulator to control MOF-74 growth and induce structural defects, and cobalt cation doping is adopted for introducing a second type of defect. The resulting dual-defects engineered bimetallic MOF exhibits a discharging capacity of 218.6 mAh g-1, 4.4 times that of the pristine MOF-74, and significantly improved cycling stability. Moreover, the engineered MOF-74(Ni0.675Co0.325)-8//Zn aqueous battery shows top energy/power density performances for Ni-Zn batteries (266.5 Wh kg-1, 17.22 kW kg-1). Comprehensive investigations reveal that engineered defects modify the local coordination environment and promote the in situ electrochemical reconfiguration during operation to significantly boost the electrochemical activity. This work suggests that rational tailoring of the defects within the MOF crystal is an effective strategy to manipulate the coordination environment of the metal centers and the corresponding electrochemical reconfiguration for electrochemical applications.

Heterobimetallic Synergism in Triple-Redox 2D Framework for Largely Boosted Water Oxidation and Flanked Carboxylic-Acid-Triggered Unconventional Tandem Catalysis

A fish-bone-shaped and thermochemically stable 2D metal-organic framework (MOF) with multimodal active center-decked pore-wall is devised. Redox-active [Co2(COO)4] node and thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole functionalization benefit this mixed-ligand MOF exhibiting electrochemical water oxidation with 375 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm-2 current density and 78 mV per dec Tafel slope in alkaline medium. Pair of oppositely oriented carboxylic acids aids postmetalation with transition metal ions to engineer heterobimetallic materials. Notably, overpotential of Ni2+ grafted triple-redox composite reduces to 270 mV with twofold declined Tafel slope than the parent MOF, ranking among the best-reported values, and outperforming majority of related catalysts. Significantly, turnover frequency and charge transfer resistance display 35.5 and 1.4-fold upsurge, respectively, with much uplifted chronopotentiometric stability and increase active surface area owing to synergistic Co(II)-Ni(II) coupling. The simultaneous presence of ─COOH and nitrogen-rich moieties renders this hydrogen-bonded MOF as acid-base synergistic catalyst for recyclable deacetalization-Knoevenagel reaction with >99% product yield under solvent-free mild condition. Besides control experiments, unique role of ─COOH as hydrogen-bond donor site in substrate activation is validated from comparing the performances of molecular-shearing approach-derived structurally similar unfunctionalized MOF, and the heterobimetallic composite. To the best of tandem Knoevenagel condensation, larger-sized acetal exhibits poor yield of α,β-unsaturated dicyanides, and demonstrates pore-fitting-mediated size-selectivity.

Directionally Exfoliated Ni/Co Hydroxide-Organic Framework Nanosheets for Enhanced Wearable Glucose Sensing

We report two-dimensional (2D) Ni/Co-based metal hydroxide-organic framework nanosheets (Ni/Co-MHOF NSs) for the construction of an efficient electrochemical nonenzymatic glucose sensor. The nanosheet architecture maximizes the exposure of coordinatively unsaturated metal sites, which enables a largely improved electrocatalytic performance toward the glucose oxidation reaction. The as-designed nonenzymatic sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 235.71 μA·mM-1·cm-2 and a wide linear range of 1-3000 μM. The sensor presents excellent selectivity against several potential interferences and a short response time of 3.0 s. Of interest, a high-performance flexible sensor is developed by depositing the Ni/Co-MHOF NSs on screen-printed electrodes, which reveal decent bending stability. The designed glucose sensor patch can attach to the human body and realize noninvasive glucose monitoring in human sweat. This work may shed light on the application of novel MHOFs in the field of wearable electrochemical sensing.

Streamlined synthesis of superstructure Ni-benzimidazole MOFs: Glucose electrochemical analysis

The design and synthesis of efficient electrochemical sensors are crucial transformation technologies in electrochemistry. We successfully synthesize a three-dimensional Ni-metal-organic framework (MOF) nanostructured material with a superior architecture using benzimidazole and nickel nitrate as precursors at room temperature which is being applied in glucose electrochemical sensors. The reaction mechanism of M-6 during glucose detection is thoroughly studied using various characterization techniques, such as in situ Raman spectroscopy, in situ ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, synchrotron radiography, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The research findings demonstrate that the M-6 material exhibits high sensitivity for glucose detection, with a sensitivity of 2199.88 mA M-1 cm-2. This study provides an important reference for designing more efficient electrochemical reaction systems and optimizing material performance. Furthermore, the superstructural design offers new ideas and possibilities for the development and application of similar materials.

Construction of Smartphone-Integrated Nanozyme Sensor Based on Amino Acid-Modulated Gold Nanoparticles

Amino acids are not only the building blocks of proteins but also lead to the development of novel nanomaterials with unique properties. Herein, we proposed a simple strategy to produce gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) with peroxidase-like (POD-like) activities by using a series of amino acids as reducing agents, named Au NPs@M (M represents different amino acids). The Au NPs@His was identified as the nanozyme with the most potent catalytic performance, which was used in combination with smartphones to achieve rapid detection of hydrogen peroxide with a detection limit of 0.966 μM. It also enables rapid detection of glucose with a detection limit of 2.904 μM, highlighting the significant contribution of Au NPs@His in expediting the detection of critical biomolecules. This work not only provides a convenient and highly efficient method to identify glucose but also shows the potential of histidine as a reducing agent in constructing Au nanomaterials exerting enzyme-like catalysis.

Cu/Cu2O/C nanoparticles and MXene based composite for non-enzymatic glucose sensors

Copper/Cuprous oxide/Carbon nanoparticles decorated MXene composite was prepared and subsequently examined for its potential application as a non-enzymatic glucose sensor. To carry out this, initially the Cu MOF/MXene composite was synthesised by the hydrothermal method and was annealed in an unreacted environment at different time intervals. During this process, petal like Cu MOF on MXene loses the organic ligands to form a Cu/Cu2O/C based nanoparticles on MXene. Further, an electrode was fabricated with the developed material for understanding the sensing performance by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in 0.1 M NaOH solution. Results reveal that the highest weight percentage of copper oxide in the composite (15 min of annealed material) shows a higher electro catalytic activity for sensing glucose molecules due to more active sites with good electron transfer ability in the composite. The formed composite exhibits a wide linear range of 0.001-26.5 mM, with a sensitivity of 762.53μAmM-1cm-2(0.001-10.1 mM), and 397.18μAmM-1cm-2(11.2-26.9 mM) and the limit of detection was 0.103μM. In addition to this, the prepared electrode shows a good reusability, repeatability, selectivity with other interferences, stability (93.65% after 30 days of storage), and feasibility of measuring glucose in real samples. This finding reveals that the metal oxide derived from MOF based nanoparticle on the MXene surface will promote the use of non-enzymatic glucose sensors.

Conductive Metal-Organic Framework Grown on the Nickel-Based Hydroxide to Realize High-Performance Electrochemical Glucose Sensing

Glucose holds significant importance in disease diagnosis as well as beverage quality monitoring. The high-efficiency electrochemical sensor plays a crucial role in the electrochemical conversion technology. Ni(OH)2 nanosheets are provided with high specific surface area and redox activity that are widely used in electrochemistry. Conductive metal-organic frameworks (cMOFs) perfectly combine the structural controllability of organic materials with the long-range ordering of inorganic materials that possess the characteristic of high electron mobility. Based on the above considerations, the combination of Ni(OH)2 and Ni-HHTP (HHTP=2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) as an electrode modification material is designed to enhance electrochemical performance. In this work, to improve glucose detection, a sequence of Ni(OH)2@NiCo-HHTP and NiM-LDH@Ni-HHTP (M=Co2+, Mn2+, Cu2+, LDH=layered double hydroxide) are successfully synthesised by doping metals into Ni-HHTP and Ni(OH)2, respectively. As a result, NiCu-LDH@Ni-HHTP showed the best excellent glucose detection sensitivity.

Dual-Track Multifunctional Bimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks for Antibiotic Enrichment and Detection

The improper use and overuse of antibiotics have led to significant burdens and detrimental effects on the environment, food supply, and human health. Herein, a magnetic solid-phase extraction program and an optical immunosensor based on bimetallic Ce/Zr-UiO 66 for the detection of antibiotics are developed. A magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2@Ce/Zr-UiO 66 metal-organic framework (MOF) is prepared to extract and enrich chloramphenicol from fish, wastewater, and urine samples, and a horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-Ce/Zr-UiO 66@bovine serum protein-chloramphenicol probe is used for the sensitive detection of chloramphenicol based on the dual-effect catalysis of Ce and HRP. In this manner, the application of Ce/Zr-UiO 66 in integrating sample pretreatment and antibiotic detection is systematically investigated and the associated mechanisms are explored. It is concluded that Ce/Zr-UiO 66 is a versatile dual-track material exhibiting high enrichment efficiency (6.37 mg g-1) and high sensitivity (limit of detection of 51.3 pg mL-1) for chloramphenicol detection and serving as a multifunctional MOF for safeguarding public health and hygiene.

Pyrene Derivative Incorporated Ni MOF as an Enzyme Mimic for Noninvasive Salivary Glucose Detection Toward Diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus

Herein, we demonstrate the detection of glucose in a noninvasive and nonenzymatic manner by utilizing an extended gate field-effect transistor (EGFET) based on the organic molecule pyrene phosphonic acid (PyP4OH8) incorporated nickel metal-organic framework (NiOM-MOF). The prepared electrode responds selectively to glucose instead of sucrose, fructose, maltose, ascorbic acid, and uric acid in a 1× phosphate buffer saline solution. Also, utilizing the scanning Kelvin probe system, the sensing electrode's work function (Φ) is measured to validate the glucose-sensing mechanism. The sensitivity, detection range, response time, limit of detection, and limit of quantification of the electrode are determined to be 24.5 μA mM-1 cm-2, 20 μM to 10 mM, less than 5 s, 2.73 μM, and 8.27 μM, respectively. Most interestingly, the developed electrode follows the Michaelis-Menten kinetics, and the calculated rate constant (km) 0.07 mM indicates a higher affinity of NiOM-MOF toward glucose. The real-time analysis has revealed that the prepared electrode is sensitive to detect glucose in real human saliva, and it can be an alternative device for the noninvasive detection of glucose. Overall, the outcomes of the EGFET studies demonstrate that the prepared electrodes are well-suited for expeditious detection of glucose levels in saliva.

Seamless integration of a nickel-based metal-organic framework with three-dimensional substrates for nonenzymatic glucose sensing

The effective integration of nanomaterials with underlying current collectors is a key factor affecting the performance of nonenzymatic glucose sensors, where an inappropriate integration structure often leads to poor electron transport and instability. In this work, a seamless integrated electrode was constructed by the in situ immobilizing of a nickel-based metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF) on a three-dimensional (3D) conductive nickel foam (NF) for highly sensitive and durable glucose sensing. Facilitated by a rapid microwave-assisted reaction, a robust interfacial interaction between the Ni-MOF and the substrate was established through in situ conversion from nickel oxide (NiO). The fabricated Ni-MOF/NF electrode exhibits an excellent limit of detection (LOD) of 2.65 μM and an impressive sensitivity (14.31 mA cm-2 mM-1) within the linear range (4-576 μM), which is significantly boosted compared with that of an electrode prepared by a typical drop-casting method (3.56 mA cm-2 mM-1 in 4-1836 μM). Characterization and electrochemical tests reveal that this integrated structure on the one hand contributes to fast electron transport and thus has enhanced sensitivity and on the other hand leads to exceptional durability with its structural integrity maintained under bending, shaking, and ultrasonication. Moreover, this seamless integration method was also employed to immobilize the Ni-MOF converted from the pre-chemically deposited NiO layer on another type of substrate, 3D carbon paper (CP), demonstrating the versatility of this facile strategy in creating diverse electrochemical electrodes for applications beyond glucose sensing.

Nanozyme-Enhanced Electrochemical Biosensors: Mechanisms and Applications

Nanozymes, as innovative materials, have demonstrated remarkable potential in the field of electrochemical biosensors. This article provides an overview of the mechanisms and extensive practical applications of nanozymes in electrochemical biosensors. First, the definition and characteristics of nanozymes are introduced, emphasizing their significant role in constructing efficient sensors. Subsequently, several common categories of nanozyme materials are delved into, including metal-based, carbon-based, metal-organic framework, and layered double hydroxide nanostructures, discussing their applications in electrochemical biosensors. Regarding their mechanisms, two key roles of nanozymes are particularly focused in electrochemical biosensors: selective enhancement and signal amplification, which crucially support the enhancement of sensor performance. In terms of practical applications, the widespread use of nanozyme-based electrochemical biosensors are showcased in various domains. From detecting biomolecules, pollutants, nucleic acids, proteins, to cells, providing robust means for high-sensitivity detection. Furthermore, insights into the future development of nanozyme-based electrochemical biosensors is provided, encompassing improvements and optimizations of nanozyme materials, innovative sensor design and integration, and the expansion of application fields through interdisciplinary collaboration. In conclusion, this article systematically presents the mechanisms and applications of nanozymes in electrochemical biosensors, offering valuable references and prospects for research and development in this field.

Fast and In-Depth Reconstruction of Two-Dimension Cobalt-Based Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework in Glucose Oxidation Processes

Currently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as viable candidates for enduring electrode materials in nonenzyme glucose sensing. However, given the inherent water susceptibility of MOFs and their complete self-reconstruction during the process of electrochemical oxygen evolution in alkaline conditions, we are motivated to explore the truth of MOFs catalyzing glucose oxidation. In this work, we fabricated a two-dimensional cobalt-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-L) as the electrode material for catalyzing glucose oxidation in alkaline conditions. Our explorations revealed that while the initial glucose catalytic response varied among ZIF-L samples with differing thicknesses, the ultimate steady-state catalytic performance remained largely consistent. This phenomenon arose from the transformation of ZIF-L with distinct thicknesses into CoOOH with uniform morphological and structural characteristics during the glucose catalysis process. And in situ Raman spectroscopy elucidated the sustained equilibrium within the glucose catalytic system, wherein the dynamic interconversion between CoOOH and Co(OH)2 governs the overall process. This study contributes to an enhanced understanding of the glucose catalytic mechanism aspects of nonenzymatic glucose sensor electrode materials, offering insights that serve as inspiration for the development of advanced glucose electrode materials.

Enzyme-free electrochemical sensor platforms based on transition metal nanostructures for clinical diagnostics

The detection of emergent biomarkers is of key significance in numerous clinical, biological, and biomedical fields. Specifically, the design and development of potent electrochemical lactic acid and glucose sensing platforms are especially in great demand in a variety of industries, including those involved in clinical analysis, biomedicine, biological, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, leather, sports, and chemical industries. Nanostructured transition metal-derived materials have opened the door to electrochemical sensors and biosensors due to their advantages of high surface-to-volume ratio, surface reaction activity, catalytic activity, and strong adsorption capability. The primary aim of the present minireview is to highlight the advancement of enzyme-free electrochemical sensor platforms based on transition metal-derived nanostructures with high electrocatalytic activity and sensing performance towards lactic acid and glucose in practical samples. The preparation approaches, structural and composition monitoring, fabrication of sensing electrodes, catalytic activity, sensing performance in real samples, and the exploration of sensing mechanisms are majorly concentrated on in most of our recent research studies. Moreover, state-of-the-art transition metal-derived nanostructure-derived electrochemical sensor platforms, critical comparison of the analytical performance of the sensor platforms, and the future perspectives of the enzyme-free electrochemical sensor for clinical diagnostics are described.
