A Ruthenium-Based Light-Harvesting Antenna Bearing an Anthracene Moiety in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

A Bichromophoric Approach to Induce Luminescence - A Blend of Experimental and Theoretical Studies

Two homoleptic terpyridyl complexes of Ru(II), 1 and Fe(II), 2 were synthesized using a ligand L1 that contained a phenyl spacer between an anthracenyl (An) and a terpyridyl (tpy) moiety. An equilibrated-bichromophoric strategy was adopted to induce photoluminescence in 1 and 2. A glimpse into the excited state photophysical properties of 1 and 2 revealed that 1 exhibited NIR emission at ~700 nm with an excited state lifetime components of 1.33 and 6.52 ns. On the other hand, 2 was found to be non-luminescent. The origin of emission in case of 1 was attributed to the effect of phenyl spacer which rendered the 3An state to be nearly isoenergetic to the emissive 3MLCT state of 1 facilitating 3MLCT-3An equilibrium. This fact was supported by experimental (photocurrent generation) and theoretical (potential energy diagram) evidences.

Photocatalytic Atom Transfer Radical Addition to Olefins Utilizing Novel Photocatalysts

Photocatalysis is a rapidly evolving area of research in modern organic synthesis. Among the traditional photocatalysts, metal-complexes based on ruthenium or iridium are the most common. Herein, we present the synthesis of two photoactive, ruthenium-based complexes bearing pyridine-quinoline or terpyridine ligands with extended aromatic conjugation. Our complexes were utilized in the atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) of haloalkanes to olefins, using bromoacetonitrile or bromotrichloromethane as the source of the alkyl group. The tailor-made ruthenium-based catalyst bearing the pyridine-quinoline bidentate ligand proved to be the best-performing photocatalyst, among a range of metal complexes and organocatalysts, efficiently catalyzing both reactions. These photocatalytic atom transfer protocols can be expanded into a broad scope of olefins. In both protocols, the photocatalytic reactions led to products in good to excellent isolated yields.

Influence of Ancillary Ligands in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have motivated many researchers to develop various sensitizers with tailored properties involving anchoring and ancillary ligands. Ancillary ligands carry favorable light-harvesting abilities and are therefore crucial in determining the overall power conversion efficiencies. The use of ancillary ligands having aliphatic chains and/or π-extended aromatic units decreases charge recombination and permits the collection of a large fraction of sunlight. This review aims to provide insight into the relationship between ancillary ligand structure and DSSC properties, which can further guide the function-oriented design and synthesis of different sensitizers for DSSCs. This review outlines how the new and rapidly expanding class of chelating ancillary ligands bearing 2,2'-bipyridyl, 1,10-phenanthroline, carbene, dipyridylamine, pyridyl-benzimidazole, pyridyl-azolate, and other aromatic ligands provides a conduit for potentially enhancing the performance and stability of DSSCs. Finally, these classes of Ru polypyridyl complexes have gained increasing interest for feasible large-scale commercialization of DSSCs due to their more favorable light-harvesting abilities and long-term thermal and chemical stabilities compared with other conventional sensitizers. Therefore, the main idea is to inspire readers to explore new avenues in the design of new sensitizers for DSSCs based on different ancillary ligands.

Effect of the co-sensitization sequence on the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells with porphyrin and organic dyes

To obtain a broad spectral response in the visible region, TiO₂ film is co-sensitized with a porphyrin dye (FNE57 or FNE59) and an organic dye (FNE46).

Efficient ruthenium sensitizer with an extended π-conjugated terpyridine ligand for dye-sensitized solar cells

A ruthenium sensitizer with an extended π-conjugated terpyridine (TUS-42) has been synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Upon extension of the π-conjugated system of the terpyridine ligand, the conversion efficiency of the DSC with TUS-42 improved successfully to 10.7%, which is almost comparable to that of one of the most efficient ruthenium sensitizers (Black dye). Interestingly, an extremely large short-circuit current density (Jsc) value (22.7 mA/cm(2)) was obtained in the DSC with TUS-42 even though the amount of dye adsorption to the TiO2 photoelectrode is relatively small.
